Book Description
While trying to bury the body of his mother deep in the woods, high school student Yuri is approached by a strange girl who offers to help him. That is... if he promises to be her "parent killing assistant." Meet Anne Freaks, a bright, attractive teenage girl normal in every way - except that she's on a mission to kill her father, the leader of the dangerous extremist cult: the Kakusei Group.
Customer Reviews:
An insoluble riddle of morality and justice.......2007-05-11
"Anne Freaks" is about several children of a religious cult that closely resembles Aum Shinrikyo, which was responsible for the Sarin gas attack on Tokyo in 1995. Anne was one of these children, whose parents were murdered by cult members. Now she is 16 and obsessed with taking revenge against the cult. As she meets several other surviving children of the cult, they band together to launch a series of murderous attacks on the cult.
Over its four volumes, the manga poses an ultimately insoluble riddle: what is justice? Is it Anne's quite understandable desire for revenge? Does justice dwell in the efforts by the police to destroy the cult, killing them all, including Anne and her friends? Or does justice reside in healing these young people and bringing them back into normal society as good citizens? Each vision is represented by a different main character, each obsessed by her own vision, each vision profoundly incompatible with the others.
I certainly won't tell you the ending, except to say that it is perhaps the only ending possible. The story is impeccably and convincingly told, as our sympathies are recruited to each vision and then refuted by another. The drawing is excellent, and Anne herself is very beautiful. Yet the story steadily moves to its own karmic ending, with the inevitability of a great tragedy. If you want simple shoot-'em-up stories with black-and-white morality, you will thoroughly dislike Anne Freaks. But if you are aware that morality and justice both are embedded in riddles and contradictions, then Anne Freaks is unforgettable. Highly recommended.
An Outsider Comments.......2006-09-05
I think it's only fair to say from the start that I am basically uneducated in the ways of manga. Though I am fond of graphic novels and I have some appreciation of various forms of Asian art, I have never taken the time (little though may be needed) to read something like Anne Freaks. So keep that in mind as you read this. (Outsiders opinions are often valuable, aren't they?)
Anyway, this story was suggested to me by a friend so I tried it. There are many things about it that I enjoyed. The art is beautiful and engaging. The three lead characters--a wimpy mother killer, a revenge killer and just a plain killer--are interesting. The story is fair. And, to be honest, I enjoyed getting used to reading "right to left, front to back."
On the other hand, there are some things that I felt were missing. The back story is rather vague, which makes the characters somewhat difficult to understand. The story is only fair and, of course, not yet complete. Most problematic, however, is the fine line this book draws between levels of readership; in particular, it feels like an adult story being reined in so it can still be sold to teens and pre-teens. Too bad. Sometimes its worth it to cross the line into adult stories and this book I think would have benefited from that.
Still, it's a fun way to spend an hour or so. And I'm interested enough to make an effort to read part 2 and find out what happens.
THREE KILLERS.......2006-03-20
Yuri has a big problem. He just killed his mother. As he is burying her body underneath a bridge, a beautiful young woman happens upon the scene. When he tries to attack the girl she promptly knocks him out with a kick and a chop to the neck! The next thing he knows he wakes up in his house and Anna, the young woman he attacked is there too, saying that he is like her and that she has disposed of the body, all except her head! When one of his fellow students who saw him commit the crime ends up dead, Yuri realizes that Anna is a cold-blooded killer, but he still finds himself attracted to her and a certain kinship...because he is a killer too. Imagine Yuri's shock when she asks him to help her kill her father! The third main character of the series, Mitsuba, also comes into contact with Anna when she warns him that he is being followed. When he finds out that his sister and father have been killed by the same terrorist organization run by Anna's father, he joins his two fellow killers, even though Anna appears to be the only professional among them.
This is a promising start to an interesting series. While Anna seems a little unfathomable at the moment, Yuri and Mitsuba are a little easier to figure out. Both young men believe they have done something so sinful that there is no going back. They think that no normal person will accept their crimes so they join up with Anna, who sees murder as an acceptable activity. There are some very dark motivations working here, but there are moments of humor in the book, and even Anna begins to show some sympathetic traits. For example, when the three work together to save innocent children who are in danger of being killed by a bomb. You sense that Yuri's "murder" might not live up to the hype of the crime. This first volume also whets your appetite to find out exactly how these three are connected and what the terrorist organization really is and what its goals are.
I would also recommend the anime Noir.

Popular public radio show host Michael Feldman and coauthor Diana Cook introduce Wisconsin's weirdest, wackiest, and most outrageous people, places, and things including a man who owes his life to a foam rubber cheesehead, a worm that plays basketball, and the best place to savor chicken in a hubcap.
Customer Reviews:
Showcases more than 125 of the most outrageously wacky place.......2004-09-07
Now in an updated and expanded second addition, Wisconsin Curiosities by radio personality Michael Feldman (with the invaluable assistance of "Michael Feldman's Whad'Ya Know?" researcher Diana Cook) showcases more than 125 of the most outrageously wacky places to see in Wisconsin. From the world's largest talking cow, to basketball on snowshoes, the annual Beef-A-Rama festival, National Mustard Day at the Mustard Museum, and much more, Wisconsin Curiosities is as fun for armchair travelers to read as it is for curiosity seekers to use as a tour guide. Black-and-white photographs round out the descriptive, entertaining vignettes with easy-to-follow maps.
Here's a Great Book.......2002-10-01
Without a doubt, one of the finest guides to the most interesting attractions in Wisconsin.
Michael Feldman.......2000-10-14
Always treating his subject with humor and a bit of disrespect, Feldman tackles trivia and oddities found on the roadsides of Wisconsin. An excellent book to keep in the glove box when you're traveling around the state, or to keep in the house for fun reading any time.

Book Description
Anke Gleber examines one of the most intriguing and characteristic figures of European urban modernity: the observing city stroller, or flaneur. In an age transformed by industrialism, the flaneur drifted through city streets, inspired and repelled by the surrounding scenes of splendor and squalor. Gleber examines this often elusive figure in the particular contexts of Weimar Germany and the intellectual sphere of Walter Benjamin, with whom the concept of flanerie is often associated. She sketches the European influences that produced the German flaneur and establishes the figure as a pervasive presence in Weimar culture, as well as a profound influence on modern perceptions of public space.
The book begins by exploring the theory of literary flanerie and the technological changes--street lighting, public transportation, and the emergence of film--that gave a new status to the activities of seeing and walking in the modern city. Gleber then assesses the place of flanerie in works by Benjamin, Siegfried Kracauer, and other representatives of Weimar literature, arts, and theory. She draws particular attention to the works of Franz Hessel, a Berlin flaneur who argued that flanerie is a "reading" of the city that perceives passersby, streets, and fleeting impressions as the transitory signs of modernity. Gleber also examines connections between flanerie and Weimar film, and discusses female flanerie as a means of asserting female subjectivity in the public realm.
The book is a deeply original and searching reassessment of the complex intersections among modernity, vision, and public space.

Again error-filled.......2004-07-30
Once again, Ms. Emberley shows that she is merely opening an English-Spanish dictionary to create her books. From the title, she demonstrates that she is not fluent in Spanish herself and she lacks a deep understanding of Spanish. As any Spanish student can tell you, "Taking a walk" in Spanish is "Dando un paseo" not "caminando." It is idiomatic faults like this one that make her books an utter waste of money.

Book Description
Best–selling author Andy Kessler ties up the loose ends from his provocative book, Running Money, with this history of breakthrough technology and the markets that funded them.
Expanding on themes first raised in his tour de force, Running Money, Andy Kessler unpacks the entire history of Silicon Valley and Wall Street, from the Industrial Revolution to computers, communications, money, gold and stock markets. These stories cut (by an unscrupulous editor) from the original manuscript were intended as a primer on the ways in which new technologies develop from unprofitable curiosities to essential investments. Indeed, How We Got Here is the book Kessler wishes someone had handed him on his first day as a freshman engineering student at Cornell or on the day he started on Wall Street. This book connects the dots through history to how we got to where we are today.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-02-21
I haven't read Running Money but its next on my list. Andy Kessler does a phenomenal job on grasping your attention and then holding onto to it till the end. Very informative and educational... a must read !!
mildly entertaining.......2006-07-29
This book is a fast read and keeps your attention. I enjoyed the authors viewpoint on how recent history progressed as it did. I have not read the author's first two books "Wall Street Meat" and "Running Money", but from the reviews they are much different than this book, and have a lot to offer. He grabbed my attention, so I will add the other books to my wish list.
Fun, light reading for a sunday long bus ride...........2006-06-26
Nothing more than entretaining fare for a long tedious bus ride. Would not dissapoint the casual reader. No more no less.
Fun and Important Book.......2006-01-02
Fascinating story about the history of technology and capital markets. More fun than most books I've read, it's like riding a roller-coaster through history.
By giving us a detailed account of how these areas are interwoven, Kessler also looks to the future - showing how important it is for America (and the world) to make smart decisions that will lead to further advances.

Not what I expected. I love his first two books much more.......2005-12-02
I rated the author's first two books "Wall Street Meat" and "Running Money" five stars with the praise that "if you like Liar's Poker, Fiasco, Pit's Bull, Confessions of a Street Addict, Trading with the Enemy..., you must not miss this one". However, this book is a >90 degree diversion of the author's prior course, which is, in my opinion, to write interesting knowledge from an analyst and a hedge fund manager's perspectives. Sorry to say that his latest work had turned into records of history falling short of sharp analysis that made his prior works so unique and outstanding. Actually, when I was reading it, "The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century by Thomas L. Friedman" which I read after "Running Money" always jumped out of my mind. Vice versa, when I was reading "Running Money". However, I am obliged to say that "The World is Flat" is a better alernative to this. For those, in particular traders and investors, who havent read any of the author's books, please read his first ones. They are great reads. For old fans of the author, you might have to change your expectation quite a bit.

Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Special Award
"I have come to think that the true likeness of Flannery O'Connor will be painted by herself, a self-portrait in words, to be found in her letters . . . There she stands, a phoenix risen from her own words: calm, slow, funny, courteous, both modest and very sure of herself, intense, sharply penetrating, devout but never pietistic, downright, occasionally fierce, and honest in a way that restores honor to the word."—Sally Fitzgerald, from the Introduction
Customer Reviews:
Give light to the rest of her writing .......2007-04-14
This book is wonderful. If you're interested in O'Connor, you should definitely read it. AND, if you're NOT interested in O'Connor, this will make you interested in her. This book gives meaning to all her other stories.
I thought the title, "The Habit of Being" was extremely strange. But as you read it, it becomes very clear why a) it was titled that and b) O'Connor exemplified that motto.
Throughout this book you will see a thoughtful, kind, and analytical artist love on her work and her friends--in the most natural, uninhibited way. She spells words wrong. She speaks of her failing health. She talks about life on the farm. In the next letter it'll be theology and Aristotle though. It's beautiful and you will learn a lot from it.
That said...it's almost 600 pages long. BUT, I couldn't put it down.
She's witty and extremely funny too.
One of her best friends complied this set of letters to share the real Flannery with the public. That she did, and it is a blessing indeed.
The impact of the holy.......2006-05-05
is like the impact of violence," Flannery O'Connor once wrote, which doesn't explain her stories but does help illuminate them. Having read her short stories and seen the cult film of Wise Blood, I nevertheless approached her letters gingerly. However, they hail from a time and tradition when letter writing was not only an art but a means of expression and communication. She works out a lot of the ideas she's writing about in her letters, which makes reading the finished works that much more fascinating.
O'Connor raised peacocks and lived on a farm in Georgia, but she also had lupus, an incurable disease. She's not sentimental about it (or about most things); she'd be a candidate for a Catholic realist (if there is such a category). Almost any writer or reader will find these letters fascinating for what they reveal about O'Connor and her method of working. Almost any spiritually-minded reader will find them equally intriguing for her insights on the human condition. Because Protestants don't have sacraments (Catholics have seven sacraments, Protestants have two), she once suggested, they have to make everything up as they go along. That seems to me to be the case in some post-modern churches where, it would seem, anything goes. But it would be incorrect, as Ralph Wood shows in Flannery O'Connor and the Christ-haunted South, to think she therefore held the fundamentalists who people her books in disdain, as did liberal Protestants and much of society in her time. Her generous nature is one reason so many are returning to reading O'Connor, and so many new readers are discovering her.
Humor, Faith, and Work.......2005-09-15
Flannery O'Connor's correspondence is a fine testimony to humor, faith, and work in the life of a fascinating and absolutely unswerving human being. As she says in a letter to Andrew Lytle from this collection, the fact that she was a Catholic kept her from being a regional writer and the fact that she was a Southerner kept her from being a Catholic writer. If you want the best tutorial you're apt to ever read on how to write fiction, forget the usual "Write a Novel in 30 Days" garbage and get a copy of THE HABIT OF BEING. She'll also teach you quite a bit about living.
Past works are suited for today........2005-09-11
These letters offer deep insight into the importance of the Catholic faith to Flannery O'Connor and to her audience of a number of decades ago. I found it an important book for today as well because we are still breathing in the toxic gas of nihilism. Not only did I enjoy her writings, but I found them to be exceptional well constructed.
The Habit of Genius.......2005-07-11
This compilation of the letters written by Flannery O'Connor is an essential companion to her unique and timeless short stories, which have been imitated but never equalled. These letters reveal another side of O'Connor that many readers, who have criticized her stories and essays as too dogmatic and unforgiving, have never seen. These letters show O'Connor's wry humor and her compassion and sensitivity, as well as her immutable religious beliefs. As one reviewer has stated, this is the finest epistolary collection that exists. Even if you are not an O'Connor devotee, you must read this book; it will not disappoint.
Book Description
Whether referred to as web gear, TE-21, TA50, LBE or LCE, the American soldier's individual combat equipment was seldom praised – except by its developers. Nevertheless, it has always been, and will continue to be an essential part of the fighting man's burden. With the aid of plenty of contemporary photographs, diagrams, and eight full page colour plates by Osprey veteran Ron Volstad, Gordon Rottman's text unearths a wealth of information on the changing nature of US combat equipments from 1910-1988.
Customer Reviews:
This brought back some semi fond memories.......2005-06-07
Another outstanding book by Mr. Rottman, It brought back memories of some of the junk that I use to have to hump back about 100 pounds ago. Good to go!
Superficial Study.......2001-12-23
I have had this book for many years. Every paragraph is marked up with some error of interpretation or fact. I see no evidence that the author consulted an article that I wrote thirty some years ago on the development of infantry equipment. And he is careless with the proper nomenclature. He uses jargon such as "product improved", a modern term, which is not relevent to the period and was never used in the period 1910 to very recently.
The author simply did not do enough research nor understand what he read. The subject is simply too vast to cover in such a short format. But the illustrations are excellent, it is just the text that I cannot recommend.
Book Description
This book both introduces and explores the hows and whys of the practices of public policy. It provides reality-based practical advice about how to actually conduct policy analysis and demonstrate the application of advanced analytic techniques. A five-part organization emphasizes that policy analysis is client-oriented and raises ethical issues; provides rationales for public policy describing the limitations to effective public policy and generic policy solutions; gives practical advice about implementing policy analysis; presents several examples illustrating how analysts have approached policy problems and the differences that their efforts have made; and summarizes the role and work of the analyst and challenges the analyst to both do-well and do-good. For individuals interested in policy analysis and the analytical process.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best texts in policy analysis.......2006-12-28
This is one of the very best textbooks in the study of policy analysis.
The first part of the book sets the context. It provides a neat case study of the Canadian salmon fishery to give an example of basic policy analysis. Following this are chapters on the nature of policy analysis and the professional ethics related to the endeavor.
One of the most important elements of this book is the next section--the economics of policy analysis. The text discusses the logic of economics, why government intervention through making policy can make economic sense under certain conditions, and the danger of "government failure" (when governmernt actions may work against good economic sense).
The following section focuses on the variety of policy options available to government to address problems. Some "solutions" are market-based; others include regulations and taxes. The volume goes on to explore techniques such as cost-benefit analysis. Two case studies of policy analysis round out the substantive chapters. The last chapter focuses on the responsibility of policy analysts to both "do well" and to "do good."
Not an easy read, but a book that provides the basic underpinnings for understanding policy analysis--and how to do policy analysis.
GREAT TRANSACTION!.......2006-02-25
I was pleased with the purchase. The item came fast and in the promised condition.
as good as anything out there.......2004-11-29
This is 'the' book when it comes to public policy analysis. I have read the 3rd and 4th editions and both are great foundational books for anyone looking to do public policy analysis as a practitioner or academic researcher.
Great overview of policy analysis.......2002-12-20
I read this book for a class and it gives a fantastic overview of the basics of policy analysis. It discusses the reasons for government intervention in markets, the analysis of policies and ways of going about doing a thorough policy analysis. Easy to read and very informative!
a well-organized introduction to policy studies.......1999-09-01
Weimer's "Policy Analysis -3rd edition" provides a well-organized, widely-covered, and easily-understandable introduction to policy analysis. Although we have to seek for other materials for an in-depth analysis of some topics, the book helps us start with Public Policy, Policy Analysis, and even economic policies. This is especially good for undergraduate level, since this provides how to study, investigate, and write policy paper.
