We worship Shell.......2000-05-21
We found this book at the library and it so impressed us that we've actually started having Shell competitions at work. The book is so full of inspiring ideas and easy-to-use techniques. And the children's clothing ideas...
Shell is a role model for us here at work and we all strive to incorporate her ideas of clothing conservation and decoration. In fact, we LIVE by Shell's rules of life and have constructed a shrine (recycled, of course!) in her honor.
Feminity and Romance on a shoestring...........2000-04-03
If you are frustrated by living in a world of "cookie cutter" fashions, that do not offer even a hint of feminity, then Shell Kepler's "MAKE FASHION MAGIC", is the exact book you should purchase. Shell's down to earth and simplistic approach in showing you how to embellish either your current clothing or great second-hand finds, will leave you screaming for more. All women have a deep desire to feel feminine and sexy and unfortunatley many of todays fashions leave that important part out. And many times when you do find clothing with her type of style, the price tag equals the national debt! Purchase Shell's book and see how she turns an ordinary white tuxedo jacket and a daring bustier into the most romantic and sensual set of clothing you will ever own...Be daring, be sexy and find the passion inside you with Shell's clothing ideas. No more boring T-Shirts and plain old jeans after you purchase this book!

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Mystique finally finds out who the Quiet Man is. Once she has worked out this particular mystery, her nasty, sneaky, devious mind has to try and work out who she is most annoyed with.
Or, in other words, which side of the equation should she try and bump off. Seems ol' Chuck Xavier draws the short straw.
overall interesting story.......2006-07-11
I actually just read this last installment in the story and it wasn't nearly as good as the first two books, actually it was the most disappointing out the four books, but that being said its still falls in line with the complexity of mystiques character. I think that the review written by "comicscholar", mr. Kovacs sums it up best and desrcibes it better than I ever could. I think he is more familiar with the overall series. If you like x-men I still think that you will enjoy the final installment but it only works if you have read all four books in the correct order. The review written by VHS preowner is stupid, and out of curiousity, I read a number of his other reviews. In reviewing "Pirates of the Carribean, Dead mans chest" he has the stupidity to say that johnny Depp can't act" Depp is probably one of the most brilliant actors in hollywood today. He is an amazing actor and preowners inane remarks leads me to conclude that all his reviews are probably worthless; anyway, "Quiet" was an entertaining read and I still liked it although not as much as the first three installments.
an honest review.......2006-05-05
I started with this series from the beginning and enjoyed the first two volumes a great deal. Unfortunately, after those the story becomes less enthralling. Plot lines that were still going were wrapped up in ways that felt a little forced and the initial punch just wasn't there.
That being said, it was not that bad of a book. If I had not liked the first two volumes as much as a I did then I probably would have liked this one much more. You should definitely read the volumes in the right order as the plot is an espionage kind of thing with a lot of plot threads that would be hard ot folllow without reading their beginnings.
As for vhspreowner's review, it is ridiculous and should be deleted or ignored. I have stumbled onto so many trollish reviews from this guy I am starting to develop a vendetta. If he just picked up this volume then it would of course be difficult to understand anyone able to read the volume number could have figured that out. Although if you couldn't do that then the story would simply be way too complex as it was written for those above a first grade reading level.

A Must for Sassy Women.......2003-12-16
Not just a man-bashing book, as the title might suggest, this book is filled with bon mots from sharp tongued women - many having nothing to do with husbands. I held my sides and wiped away the tears I laughed so much. It's the kind of book you share with a friend, and a friend of hers....which is why I'm buying a new copy! Anyone seen mine?
One of my favorite quotation books - so far!

Book Description
The most prolific ethnographic filmmaker in the world, a pioneer of cinéma vérité and one of the earliest ethnographers of African societies, Jean Rouch (1917-) remains a controversial and often misunderstood figure in histories of anthropology and film. By examining Rouch's neglected ethnographic writings, Paul Stoller seeks to clarify the filmmaker's true place in anthropology.
A brief account of Rouch's background, revealing the ethnographic foundations and intellectual assumptions underlying his fieldwork among the Songhay of Niger in the 1940s and 1950s, sets the stage for his emergence as a cinematic griot, a peripatetic bard who "recites" the story of a people through provocative imagery. Against this backdrop, Stoller considers Rouch's writings on Songhay history, myth, magic and possession, migration, and social change. By analyzing in depth some of Rouch's most important films and assessing Rouch's ethnography in terms of his own expertise in Songhay culture, Stoller demonstrates the inner connection between these two modes of representation.
Stoller, who has done more fieldwork among the Songhay than anyone other than Rouch himself, here gives the first full account of Rouch the griot, whose own story scintillates with important implications for anthropology, ethnography, African studies, and film.

Book Description
As John Lennon said to Playboy in 1980, "I like to write about me, because I know about me." John Lennon: Whatever Gets You Through the Night is a song-by-song analysis of every song Lennon wrote and recorded after the Beatles breakup in 1970 until his death in 1980.
In his songs he explored the traumas of his childhood, the bitter legacy of the Beatles, his love for Yoko, his infidelities, and his insecurity. There are also the classic anthems of social protest, like "Give Peace a Chance" and "Power to the People." Even his choice of covers like "Stand by Me" and "Be-Bop-A-Lula" tells much about his musical roots. Finally there are Lennon's accounts of his domestic contentment and optimism for the future.
Customer Reviews:

Book Description
Give your brain a workout on the type of brainteasers that challenge the best solvers at the World Puzzle Championships. They're tough, but fun, and the feeling of satisfaction you get when you succeed is simply unbeatable. Some of the puzzles are oldies but goodies, like battleships--and its many variants--where you search for a fleet hidden within a grid. In "Eminent Domain," try to determine which blanks cells are owned by the numbered ones. For "Hex Loops," locate a path that travels through adjacent hexagons: the trick is, it has to end where it started, and the lines can't touch or cross. From Snaky Tiles to Spiral Galaxies, these Mensa-level conundrums will get your mind in shape.
Customer Reviews:
A great workout!.......2007-08-14
A great book for those of you who are preparing for a puzzle competition and are looking for an exercise book (as I was when I bought this one). Despite it is only 96 pages, it has a great variety of puzzles, mostly contest types.
There are around 10 to 20 puzzles of each type, and these are:
- Alternate corners
- Battleships (classic, crowded, hexagonal, minesweeper, numerical, ocean view, semicircular)
- Corral
- Deja Vu
- Dominoes (domino hunt)
- Eminent domain
- End View (like ABCD)
- Fences (including big field fences and pentomino fences)
- Hex Loops
- Lighthouses
- Minesweeper
- Number place
- Nurikabe
- Oxtails
- Clouds
- Skyscrapers (only the 'number of buildings' type)
- Snaky tiles
- Spiral galaxies
- Spokes
- Square Roots
- Tents
The level of difficulty is pretty good, at least for the puzzles I tried.
The only drawback is that most of the puzzles are too small, especially the Fences. I've seen books where the puzzles on the answer pages are bigger than these ones. It's not like they are so small that makes it impossible to work them out, but still pretty small. What I'm doing on other books and will on that one too is to scan the puzzles, cut the white spaces and print them back again on larger sheets. This way you are not ruining your book when drawing and erasing and you can print (and solve) certain pages as many times as you like.
Highly recommended.
Best Puzzle Book I've Ever Worked!.......2007-02-10
If you love puzzles, this book is a **must have**! This is hands down the best puzzle book I have ever worked. There is a wide variety of puzzles and they are all unique, not your standard logic problems. Prepare to be challenged, these puzzles are definitely for the puzzle solver at heart! What a great mental workout!

Customer Reviews:
Good book to point out importance of relationship in Japan.......2000-08-17
This book contains about 23 short stories about Americans and Japanese dealing with each other. However most of the stories deal with American students going to work in scientific labs in Japan. The author was responsible for sending interns from an American University to Japan so she uses a lot of these experiences for her book. This limits the usefulness of the book for other involvement. The author tries to tie the stories together with 4 stages of progress in the relationship but I found it hard to make the connection. The book is very readable. I finished it within 24 hours of receiving it. The stories are each little dramas and I was captivated to find out how each person would do. In sum, a good starter but I think there is much more to the subject.
Lived it and learned it..........2000-06-25
Gercik's book is full of interesting cases demonstrating the differences and difficulties most Americans face when confronting the Japanese. Whether personal or business, these two worlds are diametric - neither truly understands the other. The analyses after each chapter provide insight for a successful Japanese-American relationship. Having myself been an intern in Japan, I can safely say that her words of wisdom are worth reading.

Book Description
Before he was even old enough to drink, he had bank accounts, a Ferrari, a mansion, a multi-million dollar corporation, and a desperate little secret . . .
it was all a lie. Most of us can't imagine life getting much worse than it got for Barry Minkow, the one-time Wall Street wiz kid who catapulted his company to stardom and success only to see it exposed as a $300-million fraud. Most of us can't imagine spending more than seven years in federal prison and coming out owing victims $26 million. Most of us can't imagine our careers changing from FBI target to FBI trainer, from CEO to senior pastor, from con man to con catcher.
Or can we? We've all slipped up. We've all failed.
Cleaning Up is Barry Minkow's comeback story-a powerful a tale of redemption and inspiration, of second chances and setting things right. More than a decade from defrauding investors, today, as cofounder of the Fraud Discovery Institute, he's uncovered over a billion dollars worth of investment scams.
Customer Reviews:
Powerful Journey.......2007-03-31
I would highly recomend this book to anyone! It is truly based on the redemptive spirit of man.Once you start reading you'll be hard pressed to put it down!A moving testimony to the power and possibilty of change. The Past definitely doen't appear to equal the Future!
It will open your eys to recognizing [..]before it happens, but more importantly it will restore your faith in mankind.
Truely well worth the read!
CLEANING UP.......2007-02-20
MUST READ FOR AN INVESTOR IN STOCKS & MUTUAL FUNDS:
I watched Barry Minkow speak at a local event in San Diego. Then, I read this book. Second part of the book is quite intriguing and enlightening. After reading the book I realized I had just avoided investing in a Ponzi Scheme simply out of my gut feel. Had I read it before, I would have notified him of a scheme in progreess. I wish Barry wrote more incidents of Ponzi Schemes and how to avoid them.
I have recommended this book to my closed friends.
Not Another I Found Jesus Story.......2006-09-05
Recently I saw Barry Minkow on 60 minutes. Upon reading amazon reviews, I couldn't help but notice the outstanding ratings but I was a bit concerned that this was just another criminal who found religion and subsequently got his act together. I am a slow reader but I've got to tell, I started this book on a rainy Saturday morning and I finished it early Sunday morning -- even the college football on television couldn't subplant my interest in this story. To say that Barry has led a very interesting life would be an understatement. He doesn't make excuses and I think he recognizes his recovery is going to be lifelong process. Look, take it from a sports junkie. You want something different, something that will captivate you from page one -- then this is your book. It's not spiritual and Minkow doesn't preach, he just tells his story. Perfect book for the train, plane or a quiet weekend at home. Gotta give it 5 Stars because its only the second book I've ever read in one day (Glory Denied is the other).
Excellent read if you like white collar crime.......2006-01-07
I found this to be a great read and page turner. If you enjoy reading a personal account of one living a life of dishonesty, pride, greediness, and the downfalls that come with it then this book is for you.
A LIFE GONE WRONG FILLED WITH PROMISE.......2005-10-18
An autobiography detailing the creation of a business while still in high school that eventually is worth millions and then falls like a matchstick creation as it was started with fraud from beginning to end. This is the story of how that was accomplished, his time in prison where he meets the most important person in his life, and after he gets out about his failures and his acceptance of his new found accomplishments. A wonderful read!!

Book Description
The entry of the Scots into the English Civil War on 19 January 1644 on the side of Parliament radically changed the balance of power in the North of England. The Royalists in the North were forced onto the defensive and besieged in York. In a bold march Prince Rupert outmanoeuvred his enemies and relieved York without a shot being fired. However, when Rupert met the allied army in battle on Marston Moor on 2 July his cavalry was defeated by Cromwell’s Ironsides who then turned on the Royalist infantry. The result was a hard-fought but catastrophic defeat; the Royalist army was crushed and their forces driven from the north of England.
Customer Reviews:
Decent, No Frills.......2003-06-08
In Osprey's Campaign #119 Marston Moor 1644, John Tincey summarizes one of the more decisive battles of the English Civil War that lost northern England for the King Charles I. This summary is more interesting than the previous volume on First Newbury, and while the author tends to digress on issues of historiography, he does provide a relatively clean campaign narrative.
In standard Osprey campaign series format, Marston Moor 1644 begins with short sections on the background to the campaign and opposing commanders. The section on opposing armies is unusually long at 22 pages (plus two more pages for the actual order of battle), and includes subsections on deployment and fighting tactics. Unfortunately, much of this space devoted to opposing armies is spent discussing and comparing various modern theories about unknown or controversial aspects of the campaign. Most readers will probably find this section tedious and distracting from the campaign narrative. The author then spends 14 pages on the early stages of the campaign, particularly the relief of York, and then covers the battle itself in 26 pages. The campaign narrative is supported by five 2-D maps (the opening campaigns of 1644, the siege of York, Rupert's march north, the relief of York, and the aftermath of Marston Moor) as well as three 3-D Birds Eye View maps of the battle itself. The three battle scenes by Graham Turner (probably Osprey's best contract artist) are excellent: the relief of York, Cromwell's Ironsides charging and the last stand of the Whitecoats.
Most of the military actions of the English Civil War appear confusing to modern American readers and herein lies the value of studying such conflicts. Unlike our own Civil War, which was fairly linear in nature, the English Civil War was set in a more fluid and non-linear environment. From the King's perspective, the enemy lay in the southeast, southwest and northeast. This non-linear combat environment and low force density resulted in very mobile operational methods and control of population centers (with attendant tax resources) became the decisive terrain. One such piece of decisive terrain was the city of York in the northeast; the Parliamentarians besieged it and the King sent Prince Rupert's army to lift the siege. Rupert's relief of York is probably the best part of this volume and should be studied carefully by military professionals. The Parliamentarian army occupied a favorable blocking position on key terrain overlooking the most obvious direct route into the city and awaited Rupert's advance. Boldly, Rupert fixed the enemy's attention with a small feint and then marched the bulk of his army across an undefended bridge far to the north and then slipped into York without firing a shot.
As for the Battle of Marston Moor, Tincey does a decent job describing the battle, although it is not always clear from his account why one side or the other prevailed in certain engagements. Clearly, the fact that Rupert's army did not expect battle to begin so late in the day and was surprised by the enemy's sudden attack was a major factor (similar to the Roman disaster at Adrianople in 378). Tincey argues that discipline was also a factor, in that the superior Royalist cavalry was difficult to reign in after one charge, while Cromwell's Ironsides were capable of reforming quickly. However, one could argue that it really was an issue of managing reserves, and both armies suffered from poor command and control after the initial action began at Marston Moor. Although both sides had light cannon at Marston Moor, there is virtually no mention of their participation. Tincey is also vague on casualties, relying instead only on a 17th Century source (no mention of modern diggings on the battlefield).

Book Description
The electrifying effect the Zapatista peasant rebellion has had on leading figures in the intellectual, political, and literary world since the Zapatistas woke them up on New Year’s Day, 1994, has provided inspiration for activists all over the world. A remarkable synergy has also developed between leading writers, novelists, and journalists and Subcomandante Marcos, the enigmatic, pipe-smoking and balaclavered leader of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation, who seems like a character out of a “magical realism” novel. This reader includes a wide sampling of the best of the writing to emerge on the subject. The book is a journey through an insurgent and magical world of culture and politics, where celebrants and critics debate what Carlos Fuentes has described as the world’s first ‘post-communist rebellion.’ Included are essays by Paco Taibo II, Octavio Paz, Carlos Fuentes, Elena Poniatowska, Ilan Stavans, Carlos Monsivais, Jorge Castenada, Jose Saramago, John Berger, Marc Cooper, Andrew Kopkind, Bill Weinberg, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Alma Guillermoprieto and Eduardo Galeano.

Highly Detailed And Informative.......2007-02-03
"The Zapatista Reader" is one of the best collections of work pertaining to the Zapatista Indian uprising in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. On January 1, 1994, the Zapatista Army Of National Liberation announced itself to the world when it took over many provinces in Chiapas and declared that Mexico's Indian peoples would not live under the oppression and hunger offered by their corrupt government (January 1 is apparently a date favored by revolutionaries considering that this was also the day Fidel Castro and his rebels took Cuba). Lead by the charismatic Subcomandante Marcos, the Zapatistas have gained worldwide fame as one of the post-Cold War world's most important and relevant revolutionary movements. With "The Zapatista Reader" we get a rich palette of the ideas, politics and history behind not just the Zapatistas, but the current state of Mexico as well. Great Latin authors such as Colombia's Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Mexico's own Paco Ignacio Taibo II (author of the great Che Guevara bio "Guevara, Also Known As Che") offer their own articles and interviews with Marcos and other members of the movement. We learn that the Zapatista revolution has deeper intentions than most people realize, for example the Zapatista women wrote their own constitution demanding equal rights in education, work and marital status. There are wonderful snippets of indigenous poetry and Marcos' own writings are a powerful reflection on the decaying state of a world that has sold itself to materialism. There are fascinating historical accounts of the history of the Americas dating back to the Spanish conquest when the brutal repression of the Indian peoples began and planted the seeds for an uprising such as in Chiapas. Some of the accounts of the Mexican government's treatment of the indigenous people are strong and ugly, such as the case of Acteal where a large group of Indians were murdered in cold blood by government death squads as a response to the Zapatista revolution. "The Zapatista Reader" is highly detailed, readable and fascinating, never boring. It is a vital document on the modern history of the Americas.
Insightful and Educational.......2002-06-05
This is a nice collection put together by Tom Hayden that serves to give one a broad overview of the Zapatista movement. There are many books out there written on the subject, none of which I have had the opportunity as of yet to read. I think the strength of the Zapatista Reader is the multi-faceted perspective it offers the reader on Marcos, the Zapatistas, the state of Chiapas, etc. Much of the well-known and respected Latin America media, as well as from around the world, weighs in with a different take on the history, culture, politics, economic theory and more. To some the book might be repetitive, as most of the authors recount a lot of the same details. However, I also believe that to be one of the book's strengths, that by the end of the reader one is well versed in the goings-on. As each author hails from a different educational and professional background, each provides different insights, pearls of wisdom if you will, just when you think there couldn't be anymore to learn. One comes away with knowing the Zapatista movement more as Mexico's version of the Civil Rights era than the next Cuban Revolution, an understanding of Mexican history, particularly as it concerns national and agrarian politics and much, much more.
Though there is plenty of Marcos speak, those looking for strictly Marcos, or Marcos' words, still might be able to find better, perhaps in something like Our Word Is Our Weapon. However, if one appreciates excellent, insightful and detailed journalism, the Zapatista Reader is like reading a special edition Time, mutiplied by ten, the Zapatistas from all sides, uncensored, exposed. I recommend it.
