5 out of 5 stars JOURNEY TO THE DARK CONTINENT, HOWARD STYLE!.......2005-07-14

Conan - Tales of the Black Kingdoms is the latest in the line of outstanding supplements from Mongoose Publishing set within the Hyborian kingdoms during the ancient, forgotten era of Conan the Barbarian. In this supplement, the players travel to those dark jungles of lands such as Keshan, Darfar, Kush, and the Black Coast for three adventures that can be played separately or as one full campaign. The first adventure, "Shroud over Zabhela" is designed for five to six PCs of 3rd to 4th level. The characters have arrive in the port of Zabhela aboard an Argossean merchant ship. The ruling class in of Kush are hiding their daughters in fear of the servants of the ape god Jullah. The player's investigation will soon put them in confrontation with a band of assassins and in search of a treasure map.

In "Ruins of Atlaia" the players find themselves captured by Tibu slavers and then manage to escape when the slavers are raided by a more dangerous rival clan of warriors. On the run they find themselves surrounded by enemies in a dangerous until they find aid from a princess who leads them to the Temple of Olorin. Finally, in "Red Citadel" the players will find themselves in pursuit of the assassins of the Scarlet Hand and the scepter that was stolen from them in the previous adventure and a final face off with the forces behind the trouble in the black kingdoms.

Those unfamiliar with Robert E. Howard's Hyborian realms should know that this was not a typical D&D type universe where there are loads of monsters and magic items to be found. Most of the foes the players face will be human long with some various animal beasts. But the campaign has a very strong Howard feel to it. It has that dense, tautly written flavor of a Howard story and the adventure will keep even the most seasoned player on their toes as they venture through this very strange and dangerous new territory. It's an adventure that should be run by an experienced DM that is familiar with Conan and Howard's stories to really capture the proper mood and setting. The players will find more than enough challenges in this adventure. I'd recommend going on the high side of the suggested PC level and having six PCs total. A diversified group will work best but you'll want to have at least 3 good fighters whether they are straight fighters or multi-classed.

All in all a very enjoyable adventure and another winner from Mongoose!

3 out of 5 stars Short for the money, but still useful.......2003-07-14

This book surprised me. It's really a pretty good book. It consists of 100 pieces of advice, each with at least 1 chess position for amplification.

At least, that was Pandolfini's intent. However, I think that the pages with just words (which accounts for half the total) are TOO wordy and unnecessary. And the headline (the "ailment") for each one makes the solution to the diagrammed position a bit less challenging than it otherwise would be.

But these are minor quibbles. It's easy enough to skip the text. The puzzles are quite interesting if they are at your level. What level? Well, I estimate about 1250-1350, and you absolutely must have read a simple endgame book first. (Pandolfini's Endgame Course is perfect preparation, but anything that covers King + Pawn v. King will do.) And be comfortable with simple tactics as well.

With just that much preparation, you can get a lot out of this book. It will build on your knowledge. For example, if you understand a few fundamental endgame positions, then you'll see why it makes sense to aim for, or avoid, such an ending via trades.

I suggest that you read this book out of order. Start with Section 2, continue through 3 and 4, and finally return to Section 1 on Openings, easily the most advanced part of the book with the longest analyses and most subtle explanations.

On the whole, the book is worth reading. Unfortunately, the price is rather high for only 100 simple puzzles. So look for it used. It's not a bad gift though.

            1 out of 5 stars Bad Medicine!!!.......2002-01-10

This doctor has nothing but Bad Medicine for your game. If you think you got problems before this book, your gonna have even more after. First you will realize after a while that you just wasted your money :)... Then you will already of lost a few games hoping for something in this book to happen. The reason this is the first review should be a warning sign. Nobody that bought this book wants to admit it and review it. They are hoping someone else will make the same mistake so they can laugh at them. I really don't care if you wanna waste your money go for it. Just ask yourself why a book this old has no reviews yet if its worth getting. That should help you make your decision where to spend your money.

            Book Description

The hardest tests for leaders challenge their character as much as their skills, and a growing body of research shows that the self-knowledge gained from such tests is critical to leaders’ success

In Questions of Character, Joseph L. Badaracco outlines eight fundamental challenges that test a leader’s character, and proposes exploring them through the lens of literature. Badaracco argues that serious fiction provides us with memorable characters facing compelling challenges similar to those that confront business leaders. Through rich analysis of the main characters in The Death of a Salesman, The Secret Sharer, The Last Tycoon, and other stories, Badaracco addresses complex issues leaders face, such as the soundness of their vision, their readiness to take on responsibility, the depth of their compassion, and their ability to manage success.

Presenting classic leadership dilemmas in a novel and valuable light, Questions of Character helps leaders and aspiring leaders prepare for the opportunities and tests before them.

For those working in large bureaucracies and/or as senior members of corporations, this book will demonstrate the TRUE characteristics of what makes up a "LEADER." A must read for anyone planning for senior management positions. However, not applicable in those corporations that are more interested in questionable, enormous salaries and bonuses, and perhaps specious operations as so many corporations have demonstrated in the past several years.

3 out of 5 stars Good Leaders Are Not Born, But Made Through Effortless Morals........2006-09-11

To become a successful leader, you must start with an open mind and listen to those you trust. Then, you make your own decisions. What is right for one may not be the situation for you. You must be able to dream and to hold to your dreams. That is most important, as the dreams tell us what is happening in our subconscious mind. It's hard, but you have to be able to accept criticism and grow from the hurtful comments of others. A great rule of thumb when someone does something intentionally to harm you or your psyche is to "consider the source," and go from there. If you value that person and his opinion, it might be choice to try his advice; if not, smile and say "thank you."

Willy Loman in Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman," was a failure to himself and his family because he embraced "a corrupt version of the American dream which defines success as money, status and celebrity. Like that conman in "Born Yesterday," written by Garson Kanin. Both plays were written in the 1940s and showed capitalism at its worst.

A good moral code is basically a set of values and principles which guide one's behavior. To be perfect, it should be based on religious training of a lifetime starting with the Ten Commandments of the Bible. Jesus led an exemplary life for his time and place. Today's world is filled with evil. New Orleans, deemed the most sinful city (along with Las Vegas), felt God's wrath with Katrina. The Bible promised we would not be destroyed by floods in the story of Noah and the Ark. Knoxville is teetering on the brink of being almost as sinful with so much emphasis on liquor. It, too, is in store for some form of God's wrath -- in what form, I'm not sure. But I predict that the walls will come crumbling down on Gay Street someday. A moral compass is useful for questions of right and wrong.

The hardest choices rise to the top because the questions which could have been solved with simple rules are delegated to others. Such is our city government, as the mayor isn't facile enough to follow through on his promises to the common folk. This is a town of "studies and plans" going on for years, with no follow through. It takes outsiders to come in and corrupt the whole town. Drinking, drugging, carousing on the downtown streets openly by people who were not born here will be the downfall of a town, not the city it could have been. I have never been good at judging character; thus, I have been let down by some I trusted. But then, I am not a leader; nor a follower be -- I tend to take the road least taken. I believe in causes and was told recently that I came home for a reason. Whether I succeed or fail is still up in the air, and I have made an impact -- something I could never have achieved had I stayed here all of my life. We see in the photographs of the Civil War how Abraham Lincoln changed from the confident President to one of toil and pain etched "ever deeper" in his face. He cared deeply and the price he paid was high.

Professor of Business Ethics, Badaracco uses fiction and literature by Joseph Conrad, John Updike, Joseph Heller, F. Scott Fitzgerald (he and Zelda were as immoral as anyone, products of their time), Tom Wolfe (not the one who said, "You can't go home again." But he was right!) and Sophocles' ANTIGONE. He should have also used Atticus in 'To Kill A Mockingbird.'

5 out of 5 stars One the best leadership books I have ever read.......2006-06-15

This will become a classic leadership / management book. I have read hundreds of books on management, but none illustrate the real challenges of assuming leadership of an organization than this collection of stories from literature. I highly recommend this book to any student of management or leadership.

            3 out of 5 stars Interesting book.......2006-04-01

This book is well-written. It is easy to read and keeps your interest in general, although it is sometimes a little repetitious and slow. I guess the author repeats the point to make sure you get it.

Some of the author's ideas are new and thought-provoking, but you have to wade through some material which sounds like every other book on this topic, as well. In any case, if you are patient you will take away some neat new ideas that you will find yourself using and referring to.

I like the examples and anecdotes he uses to illustrate his points - they are really interesting and I have found myself using the examples and referring to them in everyday conversations with people, which is great. I only wish that there were some more examples because it is not always easy to see the point when no example is offered.

            Book Description

The Executive Brain is the first book to explore in popular scientific terms one of the most important and rapidly evolving topics in contemporary neuropsychology, the most "human" and recently evolved region of the brain--the frontal lobes. Crucial for all high-order functioning, it is only in humans that the frontal lobes are so highly developed. They hold the key to our judgment, our social and ethical behavior, our imagination, indeed, to our "soul." The author shows how the frontal lobes enable us to engage in complex mental processes, how vulnerable they are to injury, and how devastating the effects of damage often are, leading to chaotic, disorganized, asocial, and even criminal behavior. Made up of fascinating case histories and anecdotes, Goldberg's book offers a panorama of state-of-the-art ideas and advances in cognitive neuroscience. It is also an intellectual memoir, filled with vignettes about the author's early training with the great Russian neuropsychologist A.R. Luria, Goldberg's escape from the Soviet Union, and his later interactions with patients and professionals around the world.

            5 out of 5 stars I loved the book!.......2007-06-27

I loved the way it was written, integrating science and context (year, country, people's backgrounds) Because after all, we must not forget that our minds and brains are part of the huge dinamic context of the life and environment we are living. The way we look at things, what we conclude and give importance to, ...are not just random events.

            3 out of 5 stars So so.......2007-03-19

As a psychologist, I found Goldberg's discussions of the frontal lobes rather good. However, readers should be aware that many of his claims regarding the halves of the brain are rather controversial, such as all the nonsense about specialization wherein one half processes information while in the "novice" stage until it's handed over to the other half in the "expert" stage. Pretty far-fetched stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful to Understanding Brain Injury.......2007-01-11

I have a child with a brain injury and found that the material contained in this book helpful in understanding her processing difficulties and gave me ideas to put in place to help overcome some of those differences. The book provided me with a better understanding of how certain neuropsychological tests measure what they say they measure. The Executive Brain was so helpful to me that I purchased additional copies and gave them friends and teachers who either have or work with children with learning difficulties. The beginning of Goldberg's work takes place during the time of the Soviet Union. Having traveled in Russia, I found his account of events there facinating.

            5 out of 5 stars Well Done........2007-01-10

At first I was afraid something written in the jargon of popular science would not be a worthwhile read. I was wrong. This is an excellent read, and is packed with worthwhile information about the frontal lobes and the patients with problems there. Thank you Dr. Goldberg.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent read.......2006-10-29

Goldberg does a superb job of helping the reader understand the frontal lobe function as well as executive functioning in general. To read from a direct student of Luria is a thrill.

From the inside expert who created McGraw-Hill’s ASVAB—a vital guide to the ASVAB subtests essential to every military recruit

The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is the test you will take for entry and classification in the United States Armed Forces. Of the eight ASVAB subtests, four--word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, arithmetic reasoning, and mathematics knowledge--comprise what is called the Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT). You must achieve certain AFQT scores or you may be barred from certain military occupations--or even from the military itself!

McGraw-Hill’s ASVAB Basic Training provides you with intensive review and practice specifically targeted to the AFQT portion of the ASVAB. This guide includes drills, exercises, review material, and inside information on the minimum “line scores” required to qualify for hundreds of specific military occupations.

For anybody considering a career in politics, No Place for Amateurs is a thorough description of what goes on behind the scenes. "While candidates are ultimately responsible for their campaigns, there is no way they can compete, let alone win, without professional help," writes Dennis W. Johnson. He ought to know: in addition to working as a campaign consultant himself, Johnson is the associate dean at George Washington University's Graduate School of Political Management. On these pages, he describes everything that goes into a campaign, from fundraising to opposition research to handling the media. And he doesn't shy away from details. In a chapter on polling and public opinion, for instance, he describes how "a well-financed statewide campaign" would want to begin with a "benchmark survey" a year before the election, followed by focus groups to "explore in greater depth the responses given in the benchmark survey." Four or five months later would come "trend surveys" to see what impact the campaigns have had on public opinion. Ideas for commercials then would undergo "dial meter analysis" to test their effectiveness. Finally, tracking polls in the final weeks would try to gauge "late trends and movements of public preferences."

Taken as a whole, No Place for Amateurs reads like a how-to guide for campaigns. It never really delivers what it promises in the subtitle--an analysis of how political professionals have come to have such a great role in modern politics--but that's OK, because it does acknowledge their presence and describe what they do. There may, in fact, be a greater need for the book Johnson actually has written, and it must be required reading at his school. It's full of anecdotes, too, which provide real-world examples of how campaigns work. Less effective are Johnson's descriptions of fictional races, although they may help him make key points more sharply than if they were based on real experiences. Political pros often say the best way to learn about campaigns is to work on one. That's probably true, but it might also be a good idea to read this book before taking even that first step. --John J. Miller

                      Book Description

No Place for Amateurs is an an insider's tour through the fast-paced, often sordid world of the professional political campaign. A veteran campaign consultant himself, Dennis Johnson serves as the perfect guide through the world of fund-raising, push-polling, focus groups, and negative attacks that form the basis of high-stakes national campaigning.
Cash is flowing into political races at a phenomenal rate, but why is every campaign so thirsty for funds? More polling, consultants, and TV time means more money. Major campaigns are now run almost entirely by professionals, and No Place for Amateurs details the skills, strategies and methods-and the extraordinary resources these require-to provide an expose of the highly sophisticated techniques used to reach and persuade voters. As this revealing volume makes clear, the more the candidates turn to sophisticated and unethical tactics, the less they focus on the concerns of the voters.
Illuminating this dark underside of American politics, No Place for Amateurs offers fascinating, behind-the-scenes look at all the stages of the modern, highly professional campaign.

I'm interning on my second state-wide campaign and this book has helped fill in the details of steps that happen before I have joined campaigns. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in politics or campaigning.

5 out of 5 stars An inside look.......2001-11-13

As of late, political consultants have become convenient boogeymen. It seems whenever the American people decide they'd rather be apathetic than devote a few minutes out of their day to voting or whenever a politician is caught breaking the law, it somehow turns out to be the ultimate fault of political consultants. And so, every few months or so, we get a lot of people demanding a lot of new laws and vague terms like "campaign finance" get tossed around by commentators who obviously haven't got a clue as to what they're actually talking about. Yet somehow, nobody ever seems to really bother with, say, investigating what campaign consultants actually do. Luckily, veteran consultant Dennis W. Johnson has written "No Place For Amateurs," an inside look at campaign consultants that manges to avoid the anti-consultant hysteria of most recent insider books while at the same time never embracing the shallow arrogance of the "how-to" books of consultants like Dick Morris (who is featured in the opening chapters of Johnson's books and -- no great shock -- comes across as an egotistical cad). Chapter-by-chapter, Johnson explains, in detail, what pollsters, direct mail consultants, and advertising gurus actually do. He also explains how political consultants came to be so powerful in American politics and shows that the situation isn't quite as bad as we might think. At the same time, Johnson doesn't allow himself to be a shill for his fellow consultants. He does highlight some trouble spots and the reforms he suggests manage to be both effective and fair without resorting to the hysterical fearmongering of so many other reformers. As well, Johnson's book is also full of several entertaining anecdotes from previous campaigns and it should be a lot of fun for people with a taste for political trivia.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating inside look at modern political machinery.......2001-07-26

This is a great read - especially for news and politics junkies. Johnson writes with authority, candor and humor about real people involved with real campaigns and facing real ethical issues. Not only does the book describe the tools and techniques of modern campaigns, but it provides real insight into their strengths and weaknesses when used in varying situations.

I have to admit, though, the best part of the book is the anecdotes. You get a sense of the decision making speed required in the chaos that surrounds candidates and staffs. In fact, you may actually gain some sympathy for the people who choose (or are driven) to enter the political arena.

If you liked The War Room or Primary Colors, you'll love this book.

                        Book Description

Despite all the grassroots citizen activity through online avenues in recent years, it is still true that professional consultants are the ones running elections in the U.S. The second edition of No Place for Amateurs further explores how consultants are reshaping democracy. Professional consultants still call the shots, despite the bloggers, the Dean supporters, and those who think that campaigns can be run from the bottom up, rather than the top down. Dennis Johnson, who prior to entering academia ran his own candidate and opposition research firm and was chief of staff to a member of Congress, expertly guides students through these issues.

The second edition addresses the many changes that have taken place in political campaigns since 2000, including a new landscape of campaign funding, the media and technologyÂ's increased importance to the way campaigns are run, as well as updating the cast of consultants and elections referenced in examples. The second edition also highlights the campaigns of 2005-06 and the activities of Rove and the Republican operatives surrounding Bush.
