Product Description
How do political conflicts shape popular culture? This book explores that question by analyzing how the Planet of the Apes films functioned both as entertaining adventures and as apocalyptic political commentary. Informative and thought provoking, the book demonstrates how this enormously popular series of secular myths used images of racial and ecological crisis to respond to events like the Cold War, the race riots of the 1960s, the Civil Rights movement, the Black Power movement, and the Vietnam War. The work utilizes interviews with key filmmakers and close readings of the five Apes television shows to trace the development of the series theme of racial conflict in the context of the shifting ideologies of race during the sixties and seventies. The book also observes that today, amid growing concerns over race relations, the resurgent popularity of Apes and Twentieth CenturyFoxs upcoming film may again make Planet of the Apes a! pop culture phenomenon that asks who we are and where we are going.
Customer Reviews:
Engrossing, intelligent, and eminently readable.......2004-12-31
Greene also does the text commentary on the 35th anniversary DVD of the original PLANET OF THE APES movie, and you can see why he was chosen. His deep insights into that film, and the ones that follow, are an absolute joy to read. If only the producers of the dismal remake of PLANET OF THE APES had read Green's book, they'd perhaps have understood how deeply symbolic and profound the original was. Although this is a scholarly work, it is also just a whole heck of a lot of fun. Five stars.
Lighten up!.......2001-06-26
After reading this book and contemplating just how seriously Mr. Greene takes the Planet of the Apes movies, I can only say one thing: his premise would make for a great magazine article. :-)
Great reading! Academic and and informed........1998-09-11
Eric's book is a marvel of academic analysis. The way in which he relates the Apes series, in all its incarnations, to the political and racial strife of the day is nothing short of amazing. I highly recommend this book.
Insightful, readable, enjoyable--the ultimate Apes book........1998-05-20
From beginning to end this is the study of the Planet of the Apes series that everyone of the series' fans have dreamed of and that academics who never took the series seriously will learn from and hopefully teach. In addition to being an enjoyable read, Greene has a politically-minded scholar's insight that helps lift the series from trivia into concrete seriousness. I think it is a model for future works of film scholarship and appreciation.

A good historical text........1997-08-16
This book contains valuable information on the history of African film from colonial times to the present. It explains why film production in Africa is what it is today, from region to region. This is mainly a book on African film history, so reviews of films are not emphasized

Great Starter book .......2006-04-11
A very thorough starter book on owning and managing a restaurant. I definitely recommend reading this at least twice for newbies. The sample business plans and financial statements proved really useful for me. I will be rereading my copy soon.
Good book for getting a basic vision of the whole business.......2005-01-04
I'm satisfied with this book. Although I couldn't find an answer for many questions I had, it's a great book for getting the panorama of the business. It covers all of the aspects relevant to the business, but sometimes lacks going deeper to the matter. Sure, you can't expect to learn how to open a restaurant just by reading this book. Final word: recommended!
I bought it because I want all the help I can get........2002-08-29
I've been told that 80% of new businesses fail within their first five years. I can't afford to take that chance. That's why I'm getting all the help I can get to succeed in the restaurant business. And this book is helping me a lot. Every time I flip a page and see something I didn't even think of, or spot a costly mistake I would have made, I'm glad I bought it. It's easy to read, easy to understand, and covers every phase of the business from planning to the grand opening. Good examples and checklists. I give it five stars.
EXCELLENT -- FOR ANY RESTAURANT START-UP.......2002-04-29
After reading a friend's copy, and seeing how useful this book is, I had to buy my own copy. I read it again and still refer to it for ideas. It covers the entire process of a restaurant start-up in an easy to understand way, pointing out ways to increase your chances of success and showing how to avoid many common mistakes that can doom a start-up. While showing you how to go about it, and giving examples, the author leads you through a winning business plan, menu planning, service system development, equipment layout and planning, cost controls, ways to satisfy customers and build sales, personnel planning and management, as well as a lot of common sense tips and useful guidelines. I believe this is a valuable book for anyone, who is starting-up a restaurant, to read. Good Luck.
I REALLY LIKED IT.......2002-02-13
This book gets right to the point, and is written in an easy to read and understand style. It covers all aspects of the business and gives a lot of good examples and strategies for dealing with situations. From start-up to follow-up it explains things clearly, focusing on sound controls and operating profitably. The business plan section is particularly good, and the other parts, service systems, equipment layout, production management, etc. are all helpful. Both my partner and I have copies and like it.

A must read!.......2007-01-12
I ordered "Surviving Twilight" after reading that it was about a soldier stationed at Camp Victory, etc, during 2004. My husband, Mark, was a civilian trucker hauling mail with military escorts, the 1544th Transportation Company, Illinois National Guard, the same time Shane was there.
Shane's book is a heartfelt, honest, well-written account of the life of a soldier in Iraq. I remembered many of the instances Shane wrote about - my husband was in the May 23 convoy attack - and it was interesting to read Shane's thoughts.
I highly recommend "Surviving Twilight".

Entertaining twist to experience of war........2006-08-17
Not to say that it was a trip to the Circus, but he keeps it on the light side and never loses his sense of humor, even during mortar attacks. Shares with you the sadness of losing another soldier, you can feel it. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry. Well worth the read. Had friends and an Ex, in theater, good to really know what life was like. Glad they too returned safely.
Bernie.......2006-05-19
We were stationed together in hell known as Camp Seitz, Iraq for a whole freaking year. I can't believe you were able to put your thoughts of what happen in words and never the less on paper. I give you major props, and you are still my battle buddy Bernie. Always keep Sgt Melvin Mora in your thoughts and forever in your heart. I will always love you and I got Your book Keep it rolling Baby. Spc Johnson, Jessyca P. 245th Maintenance Co "ALWAYS FIRST". OIF II
Thank you Shane.......2006-04-22
Shane made the experience of what he went through in Iraq very real to me. The tedium, the excitement, the satisfaction of getting the jobs done. Many times I was in tears as I read his observations. His style of writing made me feel very connected to what was happening. How fortunate we are that he decided to keep a record of his deployment. It is a rare window for the rest of us into what our husband, wives, sons and daughters are experiencing there.
You feel like you are there with him in Iraq . . . . .......2006-04-18
THe author of Surviving Twilight is exceptionally good at making one feel as if you are there in Baghdad. His writing style is full of descriptive adjectives that make you accurately picture life in a war-zone. THe emotions include happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, humor, loneliness, fear and sarcasm. THe book is in diary form; each day is a different experience, depending upon what events transpired that day. It is a true story of a soldier's experience in a war-torn country. Awesome book. Hard to put down! THis author speaks from his heart!

The final glory of the Army of Tennessee.......2005-08-04
In short, this is possibly the finest book regarding Hood's Nashville campaign. While some reviewers have taken issue with Sword's opinion of Hood's leadership, it should be noted that Robert E. Lee and William Tecumseh Sherman shared Sword's opinion of Hood's leadership qualities.
Read this book to learn more about Patrick Cleburne, a man of greater ability, integrity and possibly devotion to the Southern cause than the man who sent him to his death.
Read this book to learn about the greatest charge of the Confederacy. The charge(s) at Franklin were greater in size, scope and ferocity than the fabled charge of Pickett at Gettysburg. And in some ways, filled with a more poignant courage. At Gettysburg, there was a still a chance perhaps for victory....at Franklin, there was only the chance of regaining a measure of pride for men who gave all they had for the noblest ideas of Southern Independence.
More Like a Docu-drama than Non-fiction .......2002-11-08
Buy this book and you will have something in common with Confederate General John Bell Hood. You will both be victims of author Wiley Sword. The defenseless Hood is villianized by Sword's vicious, albeit eloquently written spin. Hood's critics are given top billing in Sword's pages, while Hood's many defenders are silenced. Statistics are twisted to make Hood's performance appear remarkably poor. Sword's fact-filtering, and cut-and-paste journalism will unfortunately impress the unwitting reader, who will be sixty bucks poorer, and totally misinformed on the 1864 Confederate campaign to liberate Nashville. John Bell Hood has been described as the Civil War's most "famously unfortunate" commander. Much more accurate and complete information on the campaign can be found within the pages of Shrouds of Glory, by Winston Groom, who doesn't try to create a villian where none existed.
Tennessee-A Grave or a Free Home.......2001-10-14
Without a doubt the best contemporary, secondary source on the Middle Tennessee Campaign. Wiley Sword writes a splendid military history that reads like a novel. The book is written with excellent prose and an obvious love for the topic. Also of great use to the historian is that the book is well documented with the best use of primary material that one will find in a book of this genre. The use of manuscript material further embellishes this fine book. I highly recommend this book to all those interested in Civil War history!
One of the best on the cival war in the west........1998-03-08
The book covers Franklin and Nashville better than any other book of the war. It shows the weakness of the Southern cause by this stage of the war and the weakness of General Hood. The book also show the courage of the Southern soilder and the men who led them.
Book Description
Wonderfully told story of the campaign that ruined John Bell Hood's Army of Tennessee.

Tragedy and the Army of the Tennessee.......2003-06-19
The Civil War is rapidly drawing to a close. The Southern Confederacy is literally being ripped apart by the Union armies. In desperation Jefferson Davis turns command of the Army of the Tennessee to a crippled general with no experience at high level command. The outcome was almost foreordained. Mr. Sword's book recounts the tragic destruction of an army that had been scourged by the effects of bad leadership for far too long. The appointment of John Bell Hood proved to be, argueably, the single worst decision that the Confederate president ever made.
In spite of ample evidence of the futility of frontal assualts Hood sent his army into poorly coordinated, and futile, attacks that sapped both the heart and soul of his army as well as it's strength. The casualties incurred during Hood's 7 month tenure as its commander destroyed it's combat effectiveness and it's self-confidence and hope.
Mr. Sword's book meticulously documents the events that led to the fateful battles that destroyed the Army of the Tennessee with both passion and attention to detail. The suffering and privation of the men; the strategic and tactical decisions; the events that affected the overall war effort are all faithfully portrayed.
Unlike many works of military history this one is hard to put down. It reads like a novel but is backed by extensive research and documentation. One is left with a profound feeling of sadness from the descriptions of the torn and wounded survivors of both the Blue and Grey and also a sense of deep pride at the accomplishments and gallantry of so many of our forefathers.
Civil War buffs will find few books of this caliber and will be moved by the pathos in it's presentation. As a tribute to heroism and endurance this book is withour peer. The Army of the Tennessee was often defeated but never conquered and Mr. Sword's account does them the honor their sacrifices deserved.

Escape In Iraq: The Thomas Hamill Story chronicles the extraordinary experience of American civilian, Thomas Hamill, a truck convoy commander delivering fuel to the U.S. armed forces in Iraq. On April 9, 2004 his convoy was attacked near the Baghdad International Airport. Five of Hamill's associates were killed and he was wounded and taken prisoner by masked gunmen who held him hostage in Iraq for 24 days before he made a miraculous escape. His inspirational story is one of danger, courage, faith, and family. Escape in Iraq is a must read for everyone.
Customer Reviews:
Escape in Iraq.......2007-07-13
This is an inspiring survival story. Although I was happy Thomas escaped, I was sorry the adventure was over. Thomas is a civilian truck driver transporting supplies in Iraq when his convoy is attacked and he is captured. The coincidences (if you believe in coincidences) that occur during his captivity are really miracles (if you believe in miracles), and Thomas' interpretation of them helped him survive his ordeal. He portrays his captors as human beings and finds himself respected in return. It's an incredible story by a man of amazing spiritual strengths.
Interesting easy read.......2005-09-06
This was a fantastic story from a dairy farmer who went to Iraq as a contractor to make things better at home. The story is a heartwarming one--about his family, his wife, his love of God and his faith that carried him through the frightening attack from terrorists on the convoy that he was leading, through his capture and 24-day captivity in the hands of Iraqis. It was simply written so that just about anyone could grasp what he was going through; the visual imagery was just like some of the books I read in childhood; I felt I was there with him. I enjoyed his naming his captors, it made me chuckle--that although he could lose his life at any time, he was quietly taking note of things around him and amusing himself; something his captors could never take from him. They say freedom is an "inside job". Thomas Hamill has that freedom. This is a remarkable story of courage and faith. It also gave me an interesting perspective on the Iraqi people since he didn't stay in one place and met many of them. Some interesting conversations went on about Saddam and Bush and American culture versus Iraqi culture. I thought it was intriguing and well worth the time. As a matter of fact; I couldn't put it down.
An inspiring story of courage and faith in God.......2005-06-19
This is a good book by a humble man. It is more than a story about a man captured by terrorists in Iraq. It is a story about how Thomas Hamill's unshaking faith in God probably saved his life. Most people in the same situation probably would have lost their composure and showed fear. But Hamill's ability to leave his fate in God's hands allowed him to maintain his presence of mind which enabled him to build a little trust with his captors and in the end, allowed his escape. It is an inspiring story.
Met the man...read his story...want YOU to read it!.......2005-03-21
(A rewrite of review below due to mistake in stars rating)
I met Tommy & Paul at a book signing in Mississippi. Thomas Hamill is a very humble man. Thanks Paul for writing a book that us "common folk" can enjoy...without having to wade through the "elites" vocabulary overkill. Like almost everyone, I knew the story...even it's ending...yet I didn't want to lay it down. I didn't tire of hearing the detailed accounts of Tommy's day to day (all 24 of them) events while captive because it caused me to feel like I was right there in the rooms and vehicles with him. His almost comical way of naming his captors based on their personalites made each charater involved more vivid. It is an inspiring story of faith in God and how "waiting" on God's "timing" is so vital...something we all need a lesson in. When I've watched other hostages aired on TV, pleading and crying as they begged for someone to rescue them, I felt so sad, because unlike Tommy, they had no peace...only torment and fear. Read how Tommy's faith in God not only carried him from day to day...but from minute to minute through what he referred to as..."the valley of the shadow of death".
very disappointing.......2005-02-17
I wonder if all the other people that wrote reviews actually read the same book as I did. While the whole thing was a scary and heroic experience I'm sure, it did not make for a great read.
Like a soap opera, the middle 150 pages or so could have been removed and the reader would not have missed anything. I guess it was very much the same for Hamill, day in and day out, and if thats what he wanted to get across to the reader, he did a splendid job. Very disappointing and boring book. I am glad for Mr. Hamill that he was captured when he was and not at some later point when his fate would have been forever sealed. It seems to me that with the lack of being continually guarded that he could have escaped many times and a lot sooner and spared us the middle 150 pages.

Book Description
More than half of the world's avian creatures are songbirds. Found on every continent, they brighten forests, jungles, and urban backyards with their colorful feathers and always-colorful musical sounds. But despite their numbers, humankind's unrelenting assault on the environment threatens to disrupt -- and perhaps even silence -- them. As the world's rainforests disappear, hundreds of bird species may perish with them, including many of the songbirds that spend their summers in the United States.
Songbirds: Celebrating Nature's Voices is a bird-lover's reference that examines the behavior of some of the world's most unusual songbirds as well as more familiar species, from warblers and robins to blue jays and finches. It is also a call to action, warning that the songs may soon end if we continue to destroy our natural landscape without respect for its tiny inhabitants.
Lavishly illustrated with more than 100 exquisite color photographs, Songbirds also features remarkable paintings by the renowned nature artist Barry Kent MacKay and rare images of birds that are, sadly, now extinct.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to read fascinating narratifve presenting facts & lore.......2000-01-03
This is a great book for anyone interested in learning more about the songbirds in their back yard or neighborhood, or from the far corners of the world. There are special notes on attracting, observing and conserving birds.
This is not an encyclopedic reference with page after page of repetitive format, but rather a fascinating narrative presenting scientific fact and lore in a pleasant easy to read style. It is a book you'll want to read from cover to cover.
Why and how birds sing is a focal point of the book. There is also comprehensive information on the feeding habits, breeding, migration and raising of young of many varied species.
The photography is spectacular with color photos on almost every page including great close up views of many beautiful and exotic species. Over 500 different birds are mentioned and references for further study are provided.
Celebrating Nature's Voices - A Clearly Superior Book.......1997-12-22
Professor Orenstein's look at the birds of the world is refreshing synthesis which combines the highly technical details expected by the ornithologically informed with the interesting tidbits that capture the interest of the ornithologically challenged. This is, without a doubt, the single most important addition any birder could hope to make to their library this year - all your questions answered in a clear, concise, and wonderfully familiar way.
