Book Description
The Life and Times of R. Crumb is a diverse collection of tributes to the controversial artist and underground comix pioneer R. Crumb. Follow his trajectory from homemade comic book and greeting-card design through the comix renaissance during the San Francisco psychedelic revolution to his expatriate life in France and his renewed renown today.
Over forty of Crumb's peers, friends, and admirers have contributed to this work, including:
-Simpsons creator Matt Groening on cross-hatching and the corruption of youth
-Filmmaker Terry Gilliam on pre-Monty Python days with Crumb and Mad creator Harvey Kurtzman
-Prankster Paul Krassner on the "slimy tentacles of our national id"
-Writer Alan Moore's infatuation with Angelfood McSpade
-Notes on Crumb's sexual obsessions by Screw magazine publisher Al Goldstein
-First wife Dana Crumb on the rise and fall of their marriage
-Filmmaker Jim Jarmusch's quixotic effort to canonize Crumb
-Crumb's warning to Reverend Ivan Stang about selling out
-Film critic Roger Ebert and Terry Zwigoff on the making of the harrowing Crumb documentary
And, naturally, appreciations, criticisms, stories of debauchery and foolishness from such noted comix artists as Daniel Clowes, Will Eisner, Peter Kuper, S. Clay Wilson, Doug Allen, Bill Griffith, Spain, the Friedman Brothers, Trina Robbins, Jim Woodring, Mary Fleener, Frank Stack, and Kim Deitch.

Useless anecdotes about a great artist.......2004-01-04
This is probably the least important book ever written about Robert Crumb and his work. Although it's packed with people --- each one of them talks about Crumb in their own words --- almost everything they say is forgettable. I think it's because the chapters are so short. Each person gives you two or three pages about reading Zap in the 1960s or hanging out with Crumb. I got bored hearing the same tale over and over. Two chapters stand out: Crumb's ex-wife Dana and Roger Ebert. The Crumb artwork in the middle of the book looks nice, but most of it is excerpted from longer stories. Instead of this, just buy Fantagraphics' Complete Crumb Comics.

Must-have management book.......2007-02-03
This book is simply awesome! It's all made of comics strips of Dilbert and co but all of the content is organzied as a Management book, topic in which you are guided by Dogbert (of course). We can say it's the grandfather somehow of the "Dilbert and the way of the weasel" and the previous half-comic half-written books of Scott Adams because it really is structured like a book and not like a comic collection. Indeed the subtitle is "Dogberts' big book of Business"
With Dogbert you will explore several important matters like Marketing, Business Clothing, Co-workers, Meetings, Tips & triks and so on.
I think that in this way the ironic and sarcastic attack of Scott Adams to nonsenses of Corporate America is even more focused. Totally recommended!
One of the all-time best business books + Scott Adamsý best.......2003-11-12
I cannot say enough positive things about BABLBSOS, Scott Adams' first book and the one that started him on his path to fame, glory, and fortune. I bought my first copy in the early nineties at the MIT Tech Coop bookstore, when a fellow geek friend of mine said I absolutely had to read it - he just shoved it into my shopping tote. At that point in time I had never heard of Scott Adams, and I think the Boston Globe was one of a small handful of papers carrying Dilbert (it subsequently took two years of letter writing before my local paper agreed to carry it).
In BABLBSOS, Scott Adams covers his by now familiar territory of the world of American high tech business for the very first time. BABLBSOS is not a rehash of the daily Dilbert strip like so many other collections of Adams'. Rather, BABLBSOS is original material organized by topics, which collectively cover all major aspects of the workplace experience in a high tech company. Since Adams is exploring this material for the first time, and is not doing it in a daily comic strip form, the results are more hard-hitting and concise than Adams' subsequent books. Each page stands on its own and showcases in the best possible way Adams' brilliantly cynical understanding of how businesses all too often really function.
But BABLBSOS is more than just Scott Adams' best work. It also is one of the best business books and management guides ever created, and certainly the pithiest. All too many business books present prescriptions for how businesses should operate. BABLBSOS is the opposite: an "anti-business" book that shows how businesses actually behave, from the perspective of the employees. The challenge and guidance for managers, then, is to do the opposite of the pointy-haired boss, to avoid the situations that Adams presents.
After I originally read BABLBSOS, I recommended it to everyone I knew who would appreciate it (which is almost anyone who works for a living in a corporation), and used many of the panels in various presentations. I still keep a copy handy in my office for reference. So, as you can see, I cannot recommend BABLBSOS highly enough.
OK Book.......2001-08-07
Interesting title but the cartoons inside does not match the funniness of the cover.
P.
Dogbert has useful tips for everyday situations........1998-02-19
This book is practical, humorous, and has big, simple cartoon pictures so it's easy to understand. Dogbert gives useful insights on everyday situations such as coffee intake, boss classifications, and hallway greetings. A must read!
A book about business through the eyes of Dilbert.......1997-07-13
There are many book about business etiquette. Many of them talk about all sorts of obscure manners and what to do in the strangest of situations. But this one actually talks about situations that you get into every day, such as hallway etiquette and mettings. But the best part about it is that it is fun to read. Other books have pages and pages of text that talk endlessly like a moron in the hallway. With this book, every page have something funny about it

D&D® Monster Manual. Each model is highly collectable due to accordance with strict sculpting standards.
Customer Reviews:
These are really good miniatures.......2003-01-13
These miniatures exceeded my expectations. The figures are imaginatively formed and the detail is sharp. The set I received had little flash--no more than you'd expect from any new minature. I've been dealing with miniatures since at least 1983 and have seen much worse at higher cost. I highly recommend this set.
Not even in the same ball park as Ral Partha Miniatures.......2002-12-23
First I must say I started Painting miniatures in the late 80s, so it is not like I am new to this or that I am from the great old days of miniatures for war games before Gary and his friends creating D&D. And I have taken a few years off from purchasing miniatures. But after buying some Partha miniatures from ironwindmetals and then these wotc I must say wotc has not impressed me. While the plastic bases have never been my thing at least the parth ones made in the late 90s fit into their bases correct these wotc miniatures are either way to small or a few are so fat that I thought about getting out a grinder instead of a file. While the flash was excessive on a few it really is easy to remove so I would not complain to wotc about it. But hear this wotc if you can't even ship a Mialee figure in the box like the art work on the back and the displacer beast comes cut in halves that don't come together even close and the ogre's arm won't fit into its socket and I get an extra nameless drow but no halfdragon mage to name just a few problems you need to fix something or you deserve less than one star!

Customer Reviews:
Why Scorecards don't work - and how to solve it.......2005-10-06
Why do as many as half of all balanced scorecard users not achieve the results they hoped for? Doesn't the balanced scorecard work in practice?
David Niven is an expert on Balanced Scorecard and his first book was an easy-to-read, well-structured manual of how to make scorecards work: "Balanced scorecard - step-by-step" (2002). It bridged the gap between practice and theory - especially for newcomers to the concept.
In this new book, Niven tries to bridge another emerging gap. It is the gap between those questioning the usefulness of balanced scorecard, based on the many unsuccessful implementation attempts, and what people like Niven (and I) believe to be reality: that the scorecard framework remains sound, but must be instituted with rigor and discipline if you expect to get results.
Why aren't many scorecard users happy?
Niven believes that the trouble lies in the methods used to implement the Balanced Scorecard. Many firms have been lured by the seductive simplicity of the scorecard model, believing it could be easily implemented and produce results with a minimum of care and feeding. According to Niven, troubled implementations stem from many sources, e.g.
- A lack of executive sponsorship to reinforce the Scorecard's value within the organization,
- Tired [lagging] metrics reflecting the past with no regard to the drivers of future success, and
- Management systems that continue to reward unbalanced, largely financial, performance
How do we solve it?
Niven's approach is basically to put Kaplan and Norton's five principles of the "Strategy-Focused Organization" (2001) into a more practical approach. The messages, obviously, are the same. But Niven manages to make it easier to comprehend. And he challenges the reader throughout the book. The diagnostics dimension of the book is furthermore incorporated at the end of each of the nine chapters where we find self-assessment questions.
This week I went to a conference in Copenhagen where Harvard-professor Robert Kaplan spoke about the balanced scorecard. Kaplan, being one of the inventors, acknowledged that too many balanced scorecards did not succeed. It is a paradox, since the balanced scorecard was incepted to overcome to problem that strategies weren't properly implemented. But if the system (or scorecard) to finally make the strategy implementation work doesn't work either, then we're in real trouble. So is the concept, of course.
Kaplan's suggestion to make a successful implementation of the scorecard is - like Niven's - to view it as a change project. The change programme goes thru three phases: mobilization (unfreezing), alignment (change), and sustainment (re-freezing). Kaplan specified the details as described below:
1st phase: MOBILIZATION ("the case for change"):
Principle: #1 Mobilize change thru Executive leadership
Leadership objective: Achieve commitment at the top, build the executive team, and build the case for change
Core competency: The catalyst's role is to be a missionary. The action list includes to advocate, to educate, and to sell a new way of managing.
Management role: Executive education (the need for strategic execution) via conferences, in-house workshops, and readings.
2nd phase: ALIGNMENT ("early wins")
Principle: #2 translate the strategy into action, #3 align the organization.
Leadership objective: Define and clarify the strategy, specify long-term targets, and communicate to workforce
Core competency: The project team's role is as consultant and change agent. The action list includes to design strategy maps, to design scorecards/targets, to create alignment/cascade, and to overcome resistance.
Management role: Strategy maps, balanced scorecards, First Report, Link business and support groups to the strategy, and to rationalize initiatives
3rd phase: SUSTAINMENT ("irreversible momentum")
Principle: #4 Motivate the staff, #5 Govern the Organization
Leadership objective: Reinforce strategic message: Employees follow the leader, Enforce a performance-based culture: get results, and Lead the new management meeting
Core competency: The office of strategy management's role is to be the "chief of staff" (like in the military and government). The action list includes to install accountability, to shape the executive agenda, and to integrate governance.
Management role: Scorecard reporting system, HR processes aligned, Accountability and rewards aligned, and meetings focused on scorecard objectives and measures.
If you're interested in Balanced Scorecard, you should obviously read the original work by Kaplan and Norton. But I also recommend a very capable book by the Swedes Olve et al (2003) - "Making Scorecards Actionable: Balancing Strategy and Control" - that also focuses on why balanced scorecards go wrong - and what to do about it.
If you're even more interested in performance measurement systems, then do also consider "Performance Prism" by Neely et al (2002) that takes performance systems to the next level. Personally, I don't believe they've designed balanced scorecard's successor, but they have many interesting perspectives on stakeholders, choice of measurements, and the relationship between cause and effect.

Book Description
Angel Catcher is an invaluable resource for anyone who is coming to terms with the death of a loved one. A guided journal, its pages are filled with thoughtful quotations, prompts to encourage memories, and illustrations, but mostly it offers space to record thoughts, paste photos and clippings, draw, make lists, or express any feeling or remembrance of someone greatly missed.
Customer Reviews:
Great Idea.......2007-08-16
Having lost my husband recently I was drawn to the idea of Angel Catcher. I purchased three of the journals, one for myself and one for each of our children, who are adults and live away from home.
I plan to purchase the books to give to family and friends who lose a loved one in lieu of flowers or other forms of expressions of sympathy.
I only have one problem with the journal. I am 62 years old and don't see as well as I used to. The print is so small and light in color that I cannot see unless I use a magnifying glass in addition to glasses to see it. I have had others look at it and they have to strain to see the print also. I hope this can be improved in future editions.

A must for anyone who's had a loss.......2007-03-12
this is an excellent book for anyone who has had a loss. I run a support group and highly recommend this book to help work through the hard times experienced through grief.
Cleanse your soul with this journal!.......2005-09-23
One of my friends gave me this journal after the death of my father in 1998. It has helped me "cleanse my soul" of the grief and heartache and pain of losing someone who your world revolves around. It has helped me so much so, that I have purchased large quantities of these journals to give to people as my own personal ministry to them. Somehow the "giving" of these journals makes my father's death a little easier to live with - in fact almost 6 years later - it still does. There are days I just go back to read the things I wrote and am conforted by my progress in healing and hope others I have given them to along the way are as well.
The greatest thing about this journal are the open ended questions and statements for you to fill in with whatever your feeling and thoughts are right then. And it leaves enough room for you to come back later and write more - it gives you a look over time of how you WERE feeling versus how you ARE feeling. The REALNESS of this journal is what draws me to it. Personally though, I hope you never need it.
COMFORTING/SAFE PLACE .......2005-08-22
A few weeks after my mom died, I ordered this book. I reviewed it in the book store and decided it was a fit for my loss and mourning process.
It has been a great source of comfort and relief for me. When I write in the journal, the words just flow and the pages fill; sometimes I continue writing on subsequent pages. Not all of the headings/topics fit the subject or reflection I am writing, but I find a fitting topic and the words flow.
Since her death, this journal has helped me through the entire year to express my inner feelings. At first I would cry a little after competing a segment. Now, it's a comfort and like a friend to go to--a solace away--hidden garden away from the world who doesn't have time or the empathy to hear my inner thoughts (I wouldn't share these thoughts or reflcetions with just anyone). They are private reflections and thougts for the book, my mom, and myself. The results: I am free to live, love, and be myself again.
If I had the time, I could sit and write in this book for hours. I am a believer in journaling and I have written on a professioanl basis.
To help you through your period of mourning.......2005-02-24
A dear friend bought me this book within days of me losing my husband to cancer. We all have different ways of dealing with death, and as a young widow of 33, this book was an important piece in the process of helping me confront my grief.
I would leaf through the book and randomly select a page that matched the way I was feeling on that particular day. I'd pick up a train of thought, a memory, an emotion; and I'd begin to write, and write, and write, until I felt I'd expressed as much as I could, until I'd released tiny pieces of guilt, anger, despair, loneliness. Angel Catcher became a positive vehicle for catharsis; a record of my transition from searing grief and sadness to a place of healing and great peace.
I have since bought this book for friends who have suffered their own losses. For me, it was a compassionate and constructive channel for dealing with bereavement, and I am very grateful for the comfort it brought me.
May the book continue to bring light and hope to others in need.

Great Help.......2007-06-11
This journal was purchased as a gift for someone and they love it. I would buy it for people in the future who have just lost a loved one.
Just perfect for my little granddaughter .......2007-05-31
My granddaughter who is 3 years old suddenly lost her father (my son) in January 2007 and this little journal is going to be just perfect for her to remember him - it is even better than I expected.
Helpful, healing guide for kids.......2007-03-09
The worst part of losing a loved one is the scary thought that you'll forget them. This is a helpful aid in keeping important memories alive. Helping kids know that they can continue on...
ANGEL CATCHER FOR KIDS: A JOURNAL TO HELP YOU REMEMBER THE PERSON WHO DIED.......2005-08-24
This book is a vital resource for children aged 5-10years old. Often when there is a loss in the family, the children are usually the last persons we look to share how they are feeling about the loss. As adults we try to shelter them and not "upset" them by whispering or not talking about the loved one who died. This confuses children as they often wonder why everyone is acting so different around them. This book helps kids to put their very own feelings into words.
Must buy for a grieving child.......2004-11-29
I just bought this book and I would call it phenomonal! My kids will love using it to remember their beloved cousin. I highly recommend it to parents of kids who have lost someone close to them. It is sort of like a scrapbook with lots of room for journaling. It will be a treasure and keepsake for life.
Book Description
Now in paperback - the book that Susan Tumarkin Goodman of the Jewish Museum New York praised: "Mindy Weisel and the other daughters of Holocaust survivors have provided us with extraordinary insights. "The solemn beauty of their sagas and the triumph over the past is a gift to their parents, who survived and rebuilt their lives, and to those millions who did not." Peter Novick, author of The Holocaust in America, professor of history at The University of Chicago, described it as: "Each in her own genre, these â~daughters of absenceâ trace - with great skill, great courage, and great candor - their journey from a ghost-ridden past to a fulfilling present."
Customer Reviews:
A powerful, life-affirming read.......2001-09-07
Aptly edited by Mindy Weisel, Daughters Of Absence: Transforming A Legacy Of Loss is an impressive and revealing collection of writings of the children of Holocaust survivors. It is also an homage to Holocaust survivors, intended as a gift from the children of those survivors to their parents, and as a tribute to the millions who died. With moving, uplifting prose that recounts how the daughters of survivors transforms a legacy of shadow into the artistic light of movies, art, photographs, poems, novels, and lives, Daughters Of Absence is a powerful, life-affirming read and a strongly recommended addition to Holocaust studies reading lists and reference collections.
A remarkable collection........2001-05-03
Mindy Weisel has beautifully compiled, and elegantly introduced, a remarkable collection of intimate pieces on the most difficult of topics.
Filling Absence with Joy.......2001-05-02
Twelve wonderful, talented women have taken the time to share their view of the world as it was shaped for them by their parent's Holocaust experience. Rather than turn embittered or defensive, these women turned that legacy of loss and pain into beauty, light, joy and love. We can all learn from these women - that we must honor our pasts, but live life each day, full of hope and happiness. That is the gift to us from the generation before - the ability to go on. Daughters of Absence is a lesson we all need to read, learn and live.
Thank you ladies, one and all, for sharing your stories. I am a better person for having read the book. You touched my heart.

What A Book!.......2006-02-16
I accidentally picked this book up in the sale racks - a place where I will try out an author I don't know. What a surprise. What amazing writing. I certainly hope there are other books by Alberta Hawse. I will be searching. Excellent historical Christian fiction.
The Call of the Green Bird.......2003-11-02
The world needs to hear more from this author! For every individual, there are a few books in a lifetime that they would recommend to everyone they love, even buy for them. This is one. This work of historical fiction, by Alberta Hawse, gives readers their money's worth. If you are tired of super-thrillers with world-wide conspiracies and two-dimensional characters with hokey names, this book is for you. "The Call of the Green Bird" is a story about very special, yet ordinary people. Familiar names from biblical literature appear on the fringes, are welcomed into the tale, and become real in ways never before imagined. Many current works of fiction, which address biblical topics are overtly doctrinaire and thus may repel some. "The Call of the Green Bird" is a story about everyone who is looking for the answer to the problem of death.
The story takes place in a Bedouin camp in the deserts of Syria, in 30 A. D. The portrayal of everyday life and practices of the people of the time-period is undoubtedly the product of painstaking research. No pertinent point is glossed over; no ends are left loose. The central character, a teenage boy named Mi'kal, has a yearning to conquer death, and he believes the secret to this lies in the pursuit of the fabled Phoenix, the "Green Bird" which rises from the ashes of its funeral pyre. When rumors of strange happenings in far-off Roman Palestine reach Mi'kal's ears, rumors of healing the sick and the dead, he decides to investigate. The adventures that follow are fast-paced, and intriguing. The story never stumbles.
Alberta Hawse is an adept writer, able to juggle a vast number of characters through numerous plots and subplots. Her fluid descriptive prose created settings so believable I literally felt I was present in every scene. The story is replete with references to details that are distinctly female in their point of view, and yet entirely charming and engaging to the male reader. Her use of foreshadowing was skillful and rarely yielded an outcome that resembled my predictions. The author avoided what to me is the unpardonable sin of placing unbelievable dialogue in the mouths of her characters. Every word seemed tight and natural, and contemporary colloquialisms never reared their ugly heads. For those readers searching for an epic story in the caliber of "Ben Hur," this book will satisfy.

Was not as good as I expected. We didn't use the book very much on our three week trip in Alberta.

Opened a whole new world........2004-12-21
We set up bird feeders in the little backyard of our urban condominium and watched as the birds came to feed. That was fun, but now we wanted to know more about those birds, and this book does just that. Each specie has a nice colour picture, description and a bit of advice on where and how to spot them. When we travel around the province visiting family or camping, this book is by our side with a pair of binoculars. We have given this book as a gift to a number of our family and friends.
