Book Description
This groundbreaking collection is among the first in the field of art history to explore the relation between the traumatic and the visual field in the modern period. Ranging across media and spanning from the origins of modernity to the present, the essays gathered here pursue trauma as a structuring yet elusive subject of representation. Examining the most revelatory instances of encounter between event and image, between history and visual form, this collection offers an account of the centrality of trauma's visualization to an understanding of modernity.

Book Description
Cynthia Cooper tells the story of four vice-regal balls, each more elaborate than the next, and their costumes. The nation-builders who attended disguised frivolity as historical research and chose costumes that allowed sexual display scandalous in any other setting. The reporters who reported on the balls and the photos by Notman and Topley show the creme de la creme of young Canada in all its finery.

Overall Good read.......2002-02-01
GL: The Road Back tells a good story, and Hal Jordan's concerns about how his ring and his duty has changed him and very thought-provoking. I think that I would recommend this book to long-time GL fans.
Issue #1and up.......2001-10-15
This story arc is the best of the series. A must buy if your a GL fan
Superhero with Human Problems.......2000-11-06
This book starts off at the point where Hal Jordan, ex-Green Lantern of sector 2814, had decided to give up being a Green Lantern (GL). He decided that being a GL had severely affected his personal life, and thus decided to start a normal life. However, Guy Gardner, another GL, is sore that he is Earth's GL only because Hal gave up the responsibility. Thus he keeps disrupting Hal's new life, and refuses to leave Hal alone. Things take a turn for the worse when a crazy Guardian decided to start his own collection of cities from around the universe. The book focuses a lot on Hal's thoughts, about the choices he has made, and what he wants out of his life. I would not recommend this book, unless one is into heavy issues in life.

Very sophisticated humor.......1998-01-19
The humor in this book is very sophisticated, like The Simpson's. It has that same "bite," and I laughed out loud many times, unexpectedly. It is clearly the result of genuine experiences and real strategic thinking about how to get away with doing as little work as possible. The only reason I'm not giving copies to co-workers is that I intend to put some of the ideas to use myself!
Workaholics need not apply.......1997-10-17
For those tired of reading endless and self- important business titles such as "Work till you drop" or "How to work constantly, have no life and love it!" this just might be up your alley. This book cuts right to the chase and tells you how to live a stress free life in the nasty corporate world we live in. Oh, and its pretty funny too.

Customer Reviews:
Guitarists Beware.......2004-04-12
If you're only interested in guitar transcriptions, you'd probably be better off getting the guitar tab book for this album. This transcription for all the instruments suffers from a number of problems, like
* some of the more questionable interpretations I've seen in a tab book. That's not a huge problem if you're used to transcribing by ear yourself, but if not, prepare for some confusion and/or experimentation.
* Since all the instrumental and vocal lines are crammed onto the same page, akin to an orchestral score, the printing is quite small. You may have trouble making it out from a distance while you're playing.
* Some tab symbols are never explained, despite the (mediocre) legend at the back of the book. Beginning guitarists will likely wonder what on earth "M" means, for example (usually "palm mute" here).

Silman's Complete Endgame Course: From Beginner To Master
ASIN: 1880673878 |
Book Description
Three books in one. This book contains a simple and complete opening repertoire for all levels of chess players. There are systems for playing both the white and black pieces. BOOK 1) The Torre Attack (for playing white) BOOK 2) The Tartakower Defense (for playing black against everything except 1.e4. BOOK 3) The Caro Kann Defense (for playing black against 1.e4). Great for beginners and intermediates, as these openings are based on piece placement with a minimum of memorization required.
Customer Reviews:
If you like solidity.......1999-12-08
I have a well thumbed copy of this book. It has been the foundation of my repertoire for a number of years. I am no pro, just a better than average club hack. The strength of this opening system is that it is solid from both sides of the board. One is not likely to fall apart by move 10. On the other hand it is not an exhaustive system. There is not much against the Dutch. There is not a plan against early Benoni systems. As black the Queen's Gambit Tartakower system is great. The Caro-Kann requires considerable theoretical knowledge. Against prepared opponents one has to be on toes against the Panov-Bottvinik attack, the multiple advance systems, and the grind of the main line Petrosian Smyslov system. I have argued with Smith and Hall, but I keep coming back. I have won many games by playing solid until the other person self destructed. I reccomend it as a good foundation repertoire for average cautious players like me.
A good effort, but not comprehensive enough........1998-04-19
Well written. Emphasizes piece play over complex variations, and contains many forcing variations to keep you in familiar teritory(and your opponents out of comfortable book lines). The one weakeness is that ,despite the book's cliams, the variations for white are not a complete system and must be suplemented by other sources. As a weekend chess club warrior, I found the book to provide an excellent opening repetoire for black, and I enjoyed the large number of well annotated games which provide good insight into the typical middle and endgame possitions that arise from these openings. For a class D,C,or B player this book would be a good addition to your chess library.

Customer Reviews:
The Disney Way Fieldbook.......2006-11-03
the first thought is ....WHAt is DREAM, BELIEVE, DARE, DO ?????????
Where is the mouse??? Then before long it pulls you in and you are hooked!
As a role playing book team approach, i think for private business the concepts are perfect for team building . need to look real close at a missing link that is EQ (Emotional Intelligence).
This part will go along with the 7 habits of highly effective People and should be showcased as well.
It is not a ONE item of management fits all here, rather a blend of different skill set that can be brought to the table for employers and employees to learn from and grow together while achieving a better understanding of how we can better work, live, and succeed together.
Excellent Companion Title.......2006-06-26
The Fieldbook is an excellent companion book to The Disney Way, and gives tons of helpful hints and exercises for implementing new Disney Way methods of organizing or structuring your business culture, so to speak. As a trainer, I found it extremely helpful, and highly recommend it.
Practical magic.......2000-12-12
This engaging and enlightening book is as much fun to read as it is profitable to use. Structured like a theater script and written with a dramatic verve, it casts teamwork as human drama, and taps and energizes team members' innate will to succeed not just as individuals but as members of a group. This book, and its companion volume "The Disney Way," really stand out from the business book pack in their passion, good humor, and advice on creating the practical magic that makes a team even greater than the sum of its parts. Authors Capodagli and Jackson are really onto something with their "Dream, Believe, Dare, Do" guiding principles, and their business-wise and human-wise insights make their work essential reading for leaders of all types.
Finally a book that's specific!.......2000-11-04
As a consultant myself that works with cross-functional teams, it is great to finally come across a book with proven activities that really work! This is a great tool to add to your repertoire. Individual activities are spelled out in terms of the benefits they provide, the materials required and specific guidelines on how to conduct them. This is a great contrast to the plethora of books on the market that promise great activities but provide nothing of value.
Extremely useful.......2000-09-20
An extremely useful collection of tools. I'll use this book in my teaching and training and recommend it to others.

Book Description
Wandering through Paris's Left Bank one day, poor and unemployed, Canadian reporter Jeremy Mercer ducked into a little bookstore called Shakespeare Co. Mercer bought a book, and the staff invited him up for tea. Within weeks, he was living above the store, working for the proprietor, George Whitman, patron saint of the city's down-and-out writers, and immersing himself in the love affairs and low-down watering holes of the shop's makeshift staff. Time Was Soft There is the story of a journey down a literary rabbit hole in the shadow of Notre Dame, to a place where a hidden bohemia still thrives.
Customer Reviews:
Welcome to Bohemia.......2007-07-17
I happened on this book in an English-language bookstore in Paris during a recent trip (not Shakespeare & Co., if they had it, I didn't see it), and I'm glad I did. It was the perfect read for my journey. I've been to S & Co many times, but had no idea there was a whole down-the-rabbit-hole bohemian lifestyle associated with the place (complete with mad tea parties). Mercer's book brings that little world to life and leaves you thinking that bohemia sounds magical--but you just don't know if you could do without a daily shower. A must-read for lovers of Paris and books.
Just okay.......2007-07-03
I was excited to get my teeth into this memoir but found it ultimately a little disappointing. There are some nice passages describing Whitman and his crazy personality, but I finished 'Time Was Soft There' with the feeling that Mercer had filled it out in order to have enough material for a book. Considering the literary culture of the shop, and the legacy of the authors that passed through it, there is something off-putting about this.
Great character study of both Store and Store Proprietor.......2007-05-07
I've had the pleasure of visiting Shakespeare & Co. on my many visits to Paris in the last decade. George was always in place at the front desk, waiting (if you can call it that) on the store's patrons. He was delightful, if you were respectful of the books and the other people in the store.
But he could also exhibit a certain crankiness and excentricity. I once saw a young customer ask how much a particular book was, and George opened the book, saw no price tag anywhere, and answered, "oh, about 35 francs." The young man then looked aghast at that price (which was about 7 bucks at the time), and replied, "What?! That much?" To which George snatched the book out of this guy's hand and tossed it over his shoulder. He spat at the would-be customer, "Forget it. You can't have it. You don't deserve to read it." The guy was then unceremoniously shown the door.
This personal antedote pretty much sums up George and the bookstore planted on the lovely Left Bank of the Seine.
Jeremy Mercer captures much of the feeling and tone of Shakespere & Co. during that time, while also writing a lovely - yet unvarished - portrait of owner, George Whitman.
A good read, whether you've visited the Paris location or not.
A Novel Novel.......2007-02-07
Escaping circumstances stemming from position life as an Ottawa crime reporter which have endangered his life, 28 year old Mercer runs to Paris. Broke, he is invited to tea at Shakespeare and Co., the small Left Bank bookstore which "is a socialist utopia masquerading as a bookstore". In exchange for unpaid labor, Whitman, the owner, allows struggling writers to live in the bookstore. Mercer takes up residence in the upstairs library, and experiences modern-day Bohemian Paris, "drunk on alcohol, drunk on Paris, drunk on our sudden new lives, we felt for all the world like the best of friends" (p. 161).
This book is a must for anyone who loves books, writing, independent bookstores, and Paris after the liberation-the Paris of romance, intrigue, freedom and creativity.
The one major flaw with the book is that it is hard to like Mercer, the narrator. Mercer begins his story by describing how he betrayed one of his friends, spent all his money on alcohol, drugs, and a BMW. And Mercer isn't in Paris to redeem himself. Mercer has a convenient way of painting his story around his personal acts of heroism instead of the heroics of the store. Mercer paints George Whitman as an eccentric who needs to be saved-by Mercer of course. The poet living in the antiquarian room is saved by Mercer. Fires are put out by Mercer. Passports are found by Mercer. Daughters are found by Mercer. Drunken brawls are broken up by Mercer. Mercer takes a punch in the face. The store is going to be saved by Mercer via Oprah. In this story, everyone is a big mess and Mercer is mana from heaven. Accordingly, some of the writing feels a bit affected. Mercer is trying way too hard to find the story here. Just having lived through something doesn't make a writer. It's similar to the people who think they've got a story to tell because they ran with the bulls in Spain like Hemingway.
Mercer's writing and psychology are heavily influenced by his crime reporting days. The first line of the book is "It was a grey winter's Sunday when I came into the bookstore." That kind of line seems extremely passe to me-the beginning of airport crime fiction, not a story about one of the greatest bookstores in the world. You get the feeling Mercer became a crime reporter to be a savior-it's the same mentality that his brought him to Shakespeare and Company and it dictates this story. Nurses tend to develop a sort of munchausen syndrome. After reading this book I tend to think that crime reporters have a similar sort of affliction. They place themselves in situations and places where they can play hero. I think the story of Shakespeare and Company is amazing, but I am not sure Mercer delivers it well.
Still, the story is a unique and quick read.
Stepping Back in Time...........2007-01-14
Reading Mercer's memoir was like stepping back in time for me. I've been to George's book store many times, but it's been a few years. So reading his accurate account was a wonderful return back to a special place.
I came across George and his book store in the early 90's and when I questioned if he had a book about Kiki and her memoirs, the answer I got from George was, "Come to the tea party Sunday afternoon." It was an experience I'll never forget and Mercer described that tea party perfectly....sitting there wide-eyed, trying to figure out what it was all about.
I enjoyed his book tremendously and my only regret was that it had to end. I also wanted to give Mercer credit for "tying up loose ends" in regard to George, the book store and George's daughter, Sylvia. It was a great ending with good information. I'll be back in Paris in 9 weeks and very much look forward to a return visit to the book shop with Sylvia now in charge.
If you love Paris or are planning a trip there....you won't be disappointed in this piece of history. It's the first book I've come across with so much detail and info on George Whitman.....who just happened to be raised in my hometown, Salem, Mass.

Book Description
Is Queen Elizabeth I too wily or too afraid to marry? Or is there a spoiler -- Lettice Devereaux -- in the royal romances? The marriage between this beautiful and tempestuous widow and Elizabeth's longtime favorite, the Earl of Leicester, can't have endeared Lettice to the queen.
Some years later, on Leicester's death, another courtier wins the queen's heart -- only to break it by secretly marrying someone else and then by plotting against the Crown. This soldier-poet, the Earl of Essex, is the son of Lettice and her first husband, Walter Devereaux.
"Holt skillfully weaves invention and suspense into the fabric of history." (B-O-T Editorial Review Board)
Customer Reviews:
The court of Elizabeth I from another viewpoint.......2006-10-10
Interesting read, I was fascinated to learn more about Lettice Knowles. From previous books I have read about the period, I had heard Lettice's name occasionally, and knew there was some speculation about whether or not Henry VIII fathered her mother during his affair with Mary Boleyn. We'll never know.
All in all an enjoyable read - not the greatest in the historical fiction genre, but worthwhile to learn more about the secondary players in the times of Elizabeth I.
Two is company, three is a crowd, but when one is the virgin queen? Oh boy........2005-11-26
I have to say, it's kind of sad that history has all but forgotten Lettice Knollys. She was, according to this book, one of the most vibrant and influential people of the day. But she also made a terrible enemy of her queen, perhaps explaining why more people don't know about her.
Everyone who knows something about Queen Elizabeth I knows that she loved a man named Robert Dudley, a man she gave great honors to and had known all her life. Some historians even believe that he killed her wife so he could marry the queen, and that they may have had a son together. But Elizabeth remained unmarried all her days (and supposedly a virgin) while Dudley had two wives in his life.
The second was Lettice. She was the Queen's cousin and possible her niece as her mother was popularly believed to be Henry VIII's daughter through Mary Boleyn. She came to court when Elizabeth came to the crown and soon fell in love with Robert Dudley. Later they would become lovers and eventually marry. But always it was a relationship of three people, the Queen, Robert and Lettice. Later on, the Queen would give her son from her a previous marriage great honors, and eventually was forced to behead him when he led an uprising against the crown. In that relationship too was the Queen, Lettice's son the earl of Essex, and Lettice.
This book is her story. It's a little dry at times, being a supposed memoir Lettice writes before her death at the age of ninety six, but overall not bad. I do like to think of Robert Dudley as an entirely different person as described in this book, but hey, this was the authors vision and if she saw him as grabbing for power (which he was, true) and not truly loving Elizabeth for herself not just for the crown, that's her choice.
The only bad thing about this book is the most annoying way Lettice constantly says how beautiful she is and how she's so much prettier than the queen and all men love her and bla bla bla. It gets old fast. But hey, a vain women would probably write her life story like that.
Other than that, I just like to view Elizabeth and Dudley in a more romantic way then this book does. Possibly I'm deluding myself. But if you're like me, then read this, because its not a story I was familiar with and I bet most people aren't either, and then read the secret Diary of Anne Boleyn, for the very sweet scenes between Elizabeth and Dudley (part of the book takes place right after Elizabeth becomes Queen).
Spectacular Book!.......2004-06-15
This is, by far, one of the best books, if not the best, I have ever, ever read. Victoria Holt really did her research on this book, and it is a pleasure to read both from the fiction-lover's viewpoint, and from the biographers. Be forewarned, however, that if you are not already in love with Robert Dudley and Elizabeth I, you will be no later than halfway through the book.
One good book.......2004-05-04
I loved this book. It was absorbing ( I couldn't put it down) and I felt that it was a pretty acurate depiction of the Virgin Queen's life. What better way to learn history than by reading a highly entertaining novel?
Fabulous page-turner.......2004-01-02
This is an intricately woven tale of a love triangle between Lettice Knollys, Robert Dudley, and Queen Elizabeth I. Not only does it include romance and betrayal, but it provides a different perspective of Tudor England and the inner circle of Queen Elizabeth's court. Mixing the talent of Holt and the interesting aspect of this particular time period makes this a wonderful book that you can't put down. I would recommend this to anybody who is looking for a quality read and is intrigued by shrewd Elizabeth and her elaborate court.

Book Description
Due to the spread of British strategic and commercial interests during the Victorian period, the British military was called upon to serve in theatres across the world. Some of the fighting was severe; it took nearly 30 years of intermittent warfare to suppress Maori opposition to settler expansion in New Zealand. In other areas it amounted to little more than skirmishing, as in Brooke's campaign against the pirates of Borneo and the Jamaican revolt of 1865. This book details these various 'small wars' and examines the qualities of the disparate peoples who opposed the spread of the British Empire.

How to Make Driver's Licenses and Other Id on Your Home Computer
ASIN: 1581602685 |
Book Description
Find out how crafty counterfeiters stay one step ahead of the bureaucrats and security professionals and readily replicate driver's licenses, birth certificates and other supposedly "secure" identity documents. In Secrets of a Back-Alley ID Man, Sheldon Charrett (The Modern Identity Changer and Identity, Privacy, and Personal Freedom) will show you the most effective "new school" and "old-school" techniques for new IDs, as well as poor man's tricks for those on a tight budget; the latest printers, scanners, cameras, software and other equipment used to forge IDs; groundbreaking research in hologram reproduction; simple and quick methods for producing do-it-yourself templates for licenses and official seals; ways to make composite IDs using a standard 35mm camera; and the availability of ready-made IDs on the Internet and other sources. Plus, for the first time ever in print, are precise instructions on how metallic holograms and repetitive lettering are done at home. Also included are difficult-to-find driver's licenses backs, which are nonexistent on the Internet and ignored in other ID books.
Customer Reviews:
Doesn't really tell you much.......2007-03-09
So the book isn't ALL bad. It does describe how to go about producing a lot of this stuff. But most if not all of the methods are impossible. "Sorry I can't tell you where to get (&^%&^%) because then everyone would go there but you need it" and sales so you buy his other stuff
there were entire sections that just said
"I already describe how to do this in my other book" wow that helps a lot maybe i'll buy that one too.
Also the majority of the stuff is badly outdated. He tells you how to make a Main license with a 35mm camera and a typewriter.
If you ask me, don't buy it.
Excellent book, but not quite modern enough.......2005-10-27
I really did like this book, it does have a wealth of information which can be APPLIED to more modern techniques, and generally just gets you thinking in different directions as a book like this should. But given todays climate and the fact that every state has improved security tremendously around IDs and ID cards and even birth certificates, unless you want to try your hand with a laminated Maine ID and or birth certificate printed on improper paper (and probably end up in jail), this may not be the best resource to follow word for word any longer. I didnt like the fact that he barely delved into the new world of teslin and pvc credit card hologramed high quality state IDs (if at all actually) as I feel that you would have to in a book of this nature today, but overall there are some worth while "ideas" in this book that have helped me get a bit better in the real world. Id recommend, but with a bit of caution depending on what your planning on doing, or not doing (*wink*).
Informative, Interesting Tome Delivers The Goods.......2005-03-28
I just finished reading this book, and I loved it! I must admit I was skeptical before I ordered because we have all been scammed at one time or another. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I had NOT been ripped off this time! This book lives up to the hype and does not disappoint the reader. The knowledge of the author is complete on the subjects discussed, detailed instruction is given, and (most importantly!) common pitfalls are exposed. I found myself exclaiming out loud "Wow, THAT little tidbit alone is worth the cost of this book." about six or seven time throughout my reading. I also would like to add that if you are interested in this kind of thing, this book is a great learning tool, a good place to start. Thanks Sheldon, for a well written, (often hilarious) informative, eye-opening book.
A Good Resource.......2003-05-28
This is an excellent book for someone wanting to delve into id replication, and techniques. The author is very knowledgeable on the topic he discusses in this book. From start to finish, it leaves you with a very clear understanding of the methods used to create a means of identification. Fair warning, and as he states in the book, it isn't meant for someone attempting to purchase or obtain alcohol. The book does not go into detail on every state, better yet, it focuses on information that will actually help you make an id. Full of resources and techniques, this book is an EXCELLENT guide for someone with the incentive of making an id.
It's about time.......2001-10-25
Finally. A novelty ID construction book that deals with the meat of ID construction. Refreshingly, two chapters WERE NOT dedicated to lamination. I think we all know how to laminate.
MUCH ATTENTION was paid to creating holograms (something we actually need to learn).
The research was obvoiusly thorough and comprehensive. The author does not take credit for ideas that aren't his. All his sources are properly credited (though usually anonymously by request of the source). But, hey, it shows CLASS.
VERY REFRESHING slant for a genre that has of late been falling into the trap of selling titles. This book as REAL SUBSTANCE.
An excellent reference source for anybody interested in this art. Also great for writers who need to research underworld maneuvers for their "villain" characters.
Thank you, Mr. Charrett!!!!
