      Book Description

This volume of The Escapist collects issues five and six of the popular, Eisner Award winning quarterly series and features the late Will Eisner's return to the Spirit, in a crossover tale with the Escapist! Fans of classic comics will not want to miss what became Eisner's last comics work, completed just two weeks before the death of the legendary comics godfather. Also in this volume is the comics writing debut of award-winning author and Guggenheim fellow Chris Offutt, illustrated by Thomas Yeates. Dan Best and Eddie Campbell contribute a fully painted story from the 1939 World's Fair in Empire City, and 2004 Russ Manning Award winner Eric Wight brings a polemic story from writer Jason Hall to life. Among the other notable contributors are Howard Chaykin, Paul Grist, Shawn Martinbrough, David Hahn, Roy Thomas, Matt Wagner and indie stalwarts Jeffrey Brown and Jason!

2 out of 5 stars Oh well. Maybe the other volumes are better........2007-01-10

Out of the available volumes, I chose this one because
it features Will Eisner. Eisner's contribution was
creditable, but many of the others were disappointing.
Rather than letting the Escapist be the Escapist, some
contributors were too determined to superimpose their
own politics on him. It was interesting, though, to
see the Escapist as differently visualized by so many
      different cartoonists.

          Book Description

Music video is one of the most important emergent cultural forms in contemporary popular culture. It has had a profound impact both on music, fashion, and youth culture and on the codes and forms that operate across television, film, and advertising. But until now, criticism has denied the specific nature of the form and its cultural history.

Sound and Vision is the first significant collection of new and classic texts on video, bringing together some of the leading international cultural and music critics writing today. Addressing one of the most controversial forms of popular culture in the contemporary world, the book confronts simple interpretations of music television -- as promotional vehicles, filmic images, postmodern culture -- to offer a bold understanding of its place in pop music, television, and the media industries. It moves beyond such early preoccupations as whether videos are promotions, songs, or mini-films, or whether they represent the destruction or salvation of pop music. Sound and Vision acknowledges the history of the commercial status of pop music, as well as its complex relations with other media, to offer a refreshing interpretation which takes both music and video seriously. It will be an essential text for students of popular music and popular culture.

            4 out of 5 stars For a mixed audience.......2007-02-21

I think this book aims at a mixed audience with mixed success. For the puzzle solver, there is interesting background on some popular forms, but probably not enough puzzles. For someone with a background in math the exploration is too simple, (e.g. one paragraph of Godel) and for the computer scientist not enough exploration of algorithms. For the historian of science there are some new perspectives, but the history is not carried through. On the discussion of Labyrinths, I wish Danesi would have mentioned the book Labyrinths by Borge, and also alluded to the form in some churches.

Although the book may not be for the "specialist", there is quite a bit of fun for anyone here. For example I had been familiar with the Fibonacci series, but hadn't seen the Rabbit Puzzle before. Everyone has heard of the Mobius strip, but the Klein bottle was new to me (and I'd love to buy one). I had done mazes before, but the one by Lewis Carroll us fun.

4 out of 5 stars Good start, but never becomes really challenging.......2006-01-08

Liar's Paradox has ten chapters covering 10 puzzles that mankind has created over its history. Each chapter covers a main puzzle, the historical and philosophical background behind it, and describes how each affected mathematics/science as people thought their way through the puzzles. Each chapter includes a set of follow up questions/puzzles, with a good answer section at the back.

One should note that while most of the chapters focus on math, others seem only indirectly related--for instance, one chapter is almost solely devoted to problems related to perception and psychology (such as two-tone pictures in which you can see both a vase and two people's faces), and other chapters are related to math only in extremely advanced ways--for instance, the Liar's Paradox may be a math problem for some, but at the level this book is written it doesn't really get past a discussion of logical paradoxes.

On that note, this book is written at the level of someone who vaguely remembers high school algebra (for instance, there is a fairly in depth discussion of what "exponents" are). For someone at that level, I think the book is excellent. The puzzles Mr. Danesi chooses are interesting and all described well. The puzzles at the end of each chapter are entertaining.

I think readers should recognize before they buy this book that it is probably not meant to be a brain-wracking, headache-inducing puzzle book, but rather a leasurely review of some of mankind's more interesting puzzles. Mr. Danesi has done a good job of accomplishing that.

This book is good for a new perspective in sales regardless if you are experienced or not. It gives good insight on how to prospect customers, which for many people is great. However, I think you must take this book with a grain of salt, unless you are willing to put in a lot of hours learning this selling style. My advice would be to take a few things from this book and move on! Easy read.

            Book Description

The first true account ever published by a victim of an 'honor crime,' this shocking, moving, and harrowing tale has already become an international sensation. Souad was a 17-year-old girl living in a small village in Jordan when she had the misfortune of falling in love-an emotion that would lead to an unspeakable act of violence and a lifetime of exile from her homeland. With a childhood marked by hard labor and physical abuse at the hands of her father, who is humiliated by the birth of many daughters and only one son, Souad is desperate to leave home. Enticed into a relationship with a handsome neighbor, her short-lived romance leaves her pregnant. Forbidden to marry until her older sisters find husbands and having brought shame to her family, Souad faces the only acceptable punishment: death. How her family plots to kill her, her harrowing struggle to survive burns over 90% of her body after her brother-in-law douses her with gasoline and sets her on fire, her dramatic escape from Jordan, and her resolve to build a new life for herself is a tale of heartbreaking drama and remarkable courage.

This book held my interest and at times made for shocking reading. A country with beliefs so foreign to us made it almost abhorant. The true tragedy is how women in other cultures suffer and we are powerless to do anything to stop it. This book was written by a very very brave woman.

            5 out of 5 stars Souad is a shero for surviving a modern-day Holocaust.......2007-09-08

"Burned Alive" is an insightful account of a heinous and violent crime, that is unfortunately rather common.

Souad describes thoughtfully how she was treated worse than an animal while she lived as a slave; owned by her father in a primitive West Bank Village. On a daily basis Souad was the victim of beatings and horrible abuse. Why is that?

Because like virtually all third-world/Islamic States, women are property; not human-beings. Souad is nothing if not honest and brave as she describes in detail how it is a sin simply to be born female. She even describes how her mother murdered her own newborn baby daughters because of their gender!

Souad was forbidden to ever speak to a man and could only go outside to work her long daily chores. When she was still a teenager one of her neighbors raped her repeatedly. She was young and vulnerable and this pig told her that he "loved" her and would "marry" her. But after Souad became pregnant this rapist abandoned her!

Poor Souad goes into detail about how she tried to hide her pregnancy because she knew that it would surely mean her execution. When her family was finally aware of her pregnancy (more than 6 months,) they had her brother-in-law douse her with gasoline and set her on fire. Soaud bravely describes how this felt and how she was treated.

This story is very sad, shocking, tragic but also hopeful. There are millions and millions of women who have been victims of these horrible honor murders. Souad is unique because she is a survivor. She survived her attempted murder. Her family left her for dead, but she survived. And she was able to start a new life!

My hope is that this book will be passed around in the Islamic third-world villages where women are treated worse than garbage. Proper education is the solution. No one deserves to be treated the way Soaud was; there is no justification for this.

Souad is a very courageous woman, not just for surviving, but for also telling her story. She still feels guilty, but if I could speak to her now I would tell her that she is a shero and has nothing to be ashamed off. Souad is a survivor.

5 out of 5 stars How can anyone say this is not true?.......2007-09-02

I read this book when it first came out in hardback and admit I was blown away although I am someone who is VERY familiar with the challenges so many women face worldwide. I am disappointed with reviewers who state that the book is not true and only have one question: HOW CAN YOU KNOW THIS FOR A FACT? CAN YOU PROVE WHAT YOU ARE SAYING? The truth is that you cannot possibly know and that you are simply angry and making unfair statements. Life is stranger than fiction and no one but the author of this book knows for certain, but I suspect that this story IS true. There are many people who believe that such book exposures are meant to attack a culture or a religion. This is not true. You should not take these true stories as an attack on you or your country or your culture. These are individual stories that do not reflect on you, yet should be made known. This does not mean that your culture or your land does not have many wonderful aspects. I, myself, write about women's issues and just so happen to write about the Arab world because that is where I lived for much of my adult life and that is what I know, and women from the area come to me oftentimes asking that I tell their stories. Although I write true stories of women in the Arab world, and those stories are heart-wretching, I am still aware that there are many women living happy lives in Arab lands, and that there are many wonderful things about Arab culture and lands...things that we westerners can learn from and better ourselves. But the issue of abuse on women is one that should concern every caring person. Even if most women live in safety in the Arab world, it does not mean that ALL women live without abuse. Every life is different and readers from the Arab world should be glad such stories are exposed and work to stop the abuse of women, rather than gripe when stories are made public. I am from the United States yet am not ashamed to admit that we have many abuses of women here. I myself know some professional women (doctors, lawyers) who live in abusive relationships, which is horrifying. Yet I have found that a very important difference is that women in the USA who have an abuse problem CAN seek help from society and generally will find help. Sadly, in the Middle East when a woman complains of abuse, society generally BLAMES HER for the abuse rather than the man who is abusing her! Few people will step up and try to help. Why? Because they are worried that they themselves will be targeted. Also, to expose abuse is considered a huge shame on the country. This should not be the case. No one blames an entire country for a few bad people. If anyone in the area will be honest, they will admit that abuse of women is a genuine problem. Rarely will anyone help a woman in need. The area is still a part of the world where men are more valued than women, and until this attitude changes, a lot of women will pay the ultimate price, and will live miserable lives. For example: I still have very educated Arab friends who mourn at the birth of daughters and express openly their desire for sons only. Even the educated women I know keep this attitude ongoing, which is shocking considering the fact they are women and they should work to make the status of women high. It is a huge problem. When will the world acknowledge the truth that a baby girl is no less than a baby boy, both are precious and there should be rejoicing at the birth of either. So, those of you who make statements that this story is not true, perhaps you should look around the world and know that cruelty upon women knows no bounds. I believe that anything is possible and nothing in this arena surprised me anymore. 1 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE..........2007-08-10

This book was a big waste of both time and money. It is absolutely the worst thing I have ever read and, for someone who is interested in and has studied Islamic culture, religion and history, this book is a complete disgrace. Yes, some things that the author maintained happened to her do really happen. BUT, she did not experience just one bad thing, but ALL of them and, quite frankly, nobody is that unlucky. And even if someone can be that unlucky, there is no way such person could just randomly be saved by some European aid worker. Not after she was left to die. Although, I, too, was skeptical about the claims that Souad's story is a fake, after reading the first 20 pages, I was sorry I didn't listen to the people who wrote the negative reviews.

OK, in the words of Therese Taylor:

"An important point to note is that Burned Alive is a work of recovered memory." ... "There are similarities in most works of recovered memory and unreliable memoirs. The authors' stories are extreme, they are the victims of every conceivable circumstance, and everyone they meet tends to be a sadist. Their survival is always a miracle."

Also important to note is that such works are found to be fictional 90% of the time. Basically, in my opinion, this is yet another work of anti-Muslim propaganda that is becoming oh-so-popular these days. So, if you don't care about the truth, this is an excellent book for reinforcing your hatred of the entire Muslim world. But, then again, ignorance is bliss...

4 out of 5 stars Humpty-Dumpty takes a Middle Eastern twist and Souad takes a great fall .......2007-05-03

It is highly suspenseful and I especially liked the evil telephone motif. This was back in the days before calling features when the phone still had enough mystique to sometimes in still fear.

Several reviewers have impugned the credibility of this story. The basic premise, unfortunately, is highly plausible and not just confined to Muslim countries. Someone also expressed contemptuous disbelief that Souad's mother would actually suffocate her baby daughters. This story takes place about three decades ago. Today gender (almost always female) infanticide has been made obsolete by ultra-sound. In countries like India (majority Hindu) and China (majority atheist) female fetuses are aborted at such a high rate many young men have difficulty finding wives. Many baby girls who manage to make it out of the womb alive end up in orphanages. This perturbing aspect of females helping to perpetuate their own subservient status is an irony usually overlooked by readers.

Burned Alive is a timeless story. This version just happens to take place in Palestine. Souad lives a very isolated and abusive life. Instead of her parents building self-esteem in their daughter, and warning her about the archetypal Humpty-Dumpty, they treat her as some sort scourge turned servant as compensation for not having been born male. She is kept locked up behind walls so that she won't escape and no one will use her. When she eventually manages to sneak out she is putty in the hands of a wily older man looking to score. He showers her with "kindness" and flattery, tells her he loves her and wants to marry her, etc. He gets her pregnant and then leaves the country for an extended vacation. It also turns out that he's already married or has a fiancée.

This creates an embarrassing quagmire for Souad's family: It makes the men look like a bunch of weenies who can't control their women. It also spoils their cash crop since in many cultures the groom must pay a bride price to the male head of household. Ergo, pregnant Souad must be annihilated in order to punish her and save face.

In the US murder is the leading cause of death among pregnant women, usually perpetrated by the husband or boyfriend who wants to be relieved of his paternal responsibility. Fortunately, defending one's so called "honor" is not a defense for murder. So, Charles Stuart, who fatally shot his pregnant wife and superficially shot himself blamed it on a non-existent black man. Rae Caruth denied shooting his pregnant girlfriend and if this had been prior to the advent of DNA testing he could have simply denied paternity. Scott Peterson blamed it on a band of marauding Devil worshippers. His trial was a death penalty (which is rarely carried out) case and he was convicted of two murders.

I am very grateful that in America women enjoy a status, economic power, and legal protect that exceeds that of many nations. Unfortunately, these advances haven't eradicated misogyny, which fuels violence against women.

FYI: For those interested in this subject I also recommend The Garlic Ballads by Mo Yan. It takes place in the Chinese countryside in 1987. A young woman, Jinju, is forced into an unwanted marriage with a much older man in order to secure a happy marriage for her older brother. Corrupt officials refuse to help her and she runs off with her true love. It is also a brutal story and its premise is basically the same.

3 out of 5 stars A valiant effort which unfortunately falls short.......2005-06-03

Imperial Chinese Military History is a book that attempts to describe the history of China from the very first beginning all the way up to 1912 in chronological order. The format is encyclopedic which describes events that happened virtually year by year.
It also injects in crucial events that happened elsewhere in the world. From time to time, the author would elaborate more on a particular topic, battle, or person.

The fact that the book is in encyclopedic format doesn't render it very readeable. It is nice to have if you want to check quickly what happened at a particular year but not quite if you want to learn and understand more about history as a whole.

The book is supposedly about military history. I bought the book expecting that it would try to expand upon the often neglected aspect of tactical and operational details of chinese armies. The author however falls into the trap of simply reporting of what happened, not on how or why they happened. The author would try to perform further analysis on a few selected topics. Unfortunately the analysis is rather superficial and often based only on what previous works have touched upon. There is almost no original and fresh conclusions other than acknowledgments that so and so event might not have happened the way it was recorded in history.

And lastly, the main detractor from the book is the fact that it is riddled with grammatical and spelling errors. Although such things do not change the fact that the book is filled with useful information, they do challenge the credibility of the author.

Seeing the dearth of military history of china in english, I applaud the attempt of the author. It is very unfortunate that it doesn't quite deliver.

            Book Description

It is now more than three years since the 9/11 attacks. But the collapsing towers, the smoldering Pentagon, the round bland face of Mohammed Atta still have an intense immediacy. Most people will always remember where they were when the news came through. If some of the details have faded, the mantra “the world has changed” seems as relevant as ever. The attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on 11 September 2001 had an immense impact on global history. A retaliatory strike against the Taliban has mutated into an open-ended campaign to transform the Middle East. An unpopular president with a doubtful mandate has been able to make far-reaching changes to the US constitution and oversee a massive transfer of wealth to the rich. None of this would have been possible without the 9/11 attacks, yet the events of the day and the period directly prior to the attacks are filled with unanswered questions. Rowland Morganis — independent journalist and author — who was a weekly columnist for the Independent on Sunday and the Guardian in the 1990s is now asking these questions. Back-up photos are included.

4 out of 5 stars The First 9/11 Truth Book I Ever Read.......2007-10-04

I read this book a couple of years ago and it made me start to question the whole official story on 9/11. If it does nothing else, the book will have served its purpose. It made me question and do research and was my real introduction to 9/11 Truth. It's a great introductory book on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Great book - clearly written.......2007-07-08

A book that clearly addresses the 9/11 truth issues. I recommend this book anyone who wants to know more about the September 11th tragedies and how these events have changed lives all around the globe.

This book was a great source in writing my book, The American Truth.

            1 out of 5 stars Ridiculous.......2006-07-29

I tend to be suspicious of official stories. But that does not mean that I am ready to jump at pretty much any alternative to such stories, no matter how absurd it may be.

Many major events have unusual aspects. But that does not mean that they did not happen! What's next from these folks? Maybe an explanation that Japan never attacked Pearl Harbor in December of 1941? Or that the United States never dropped atomic bombs on Japan in August of 1945?

The Twin Towers really did collapse. And there's evidence that airplanes flew into them! We Americans thought that we had some good people guarding us against sneak attacks. And I think we did. But these people either were not quite as good as we thought, or were asleep at the switch, or were confounded by a bunch of regulations that made it tough for them to gather information in a timely manner.

There have been other planned attacks on America. And, luckily, some of the more serious ones failed. In at least a few cases, our security people uncovered these plots in time to thwart them. But we had no such luck on 9/11/2001. Unless you want to consider it lucky that even more people were not killed.

There's plenty of evidence for how the attacks took place, and some of it is described in the 9/11 commission report. There's very little evidence for any other hypothesis, in spite of what this book implies.

Books such as this one rarely get taken seriously by knowledgeable people, and that has a tendency to get some readers to think that much of what they read in these books is virtually unchallenged. That's not the proper conclusion. In particular, theories that we Americans brought down the Towers on purpose (one of the ideas considered by the authors) are not merely contrary to the evidence but illogical as well.

I do not recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Incisive analysis of the "official" 9/11 account the U.S. gov't. wants us to believe.........2005-12-31

Two independent journalists aspire to challenge the so-called facts surrounding the events of 9/11.

It's a very interesting and logical read that makes you question the validity of this ongoing "war on terror"; or who's the main source of terror as we know of; or the machination behind the perpetrators of such terror.

There must be truth contained in the book, otherwise the U.S. State Dep't. wouldn't devote a space on its website attacking this publication.

5 out of 5 stars I'm stunned this is hitting the CORPORATE media bookstore shelves!!!.......2005-12-24

I was browsing Border's the other week. Being a 9/11 Truth activist the past six months, I saw "9/11" on the cover of this book naturally stopped and picked it up. I am well aware that David Ray Griffin's two books are available at the mainstream bookstores, but I figured that they were pretty much the only ones in which US Government complicity is entertained. Oh, and Michael Ruppert's "Crossing the Rubicon."

Anyway, I opened this book and was pleasantly surprised to find that is indeed a 9/11 Truth book, dedicated to activists of the 9/11 Truth Movement. The book is rich with color pictures, like Eric Hufschmid's "Painful Questions." Unlike "Painful Questions," however (which isn't available in stores), this is an umbrella book which exposes the neophyte to the entire spectrum of 9/11 issues within the 9/11 Skeptics Movement, the label the authors use for the movement. It explores the absence of F-16s intercepting the hijacked planes, the war game exercises Dick Cheney was conducting on the morning of 9/11 to deliberately confuse/paralyze NORAD, the physics of the Tower collapses/implosions, the Northwoods Documents, and many others.

What's interesting to note is that the "official story" itself has two basic versions, the first of which is essentially obsolete. This version was that such an evil attack as 9/11, such a crime against humanity, was unthinkable, so unthinkable that the government had no idea that terrorists could ever conceive of such an attack! This was the version the American public accepted when it was paralyzed by fear and nationalism. However, the 9/11 Commission Report in 2004 gives us Version Two of the official version. This version holds that the US government screwed up big-time, failed to connect the dots, and needs to really learn from its mistakes. This version tacitly acknowledges that 9/11 could indeed have been prevented.

Then there are two alternative theories: LIHOP and MIHOP. Let-it-happen-on-purpose, and Made-it-happen-on-purpose. There is really not much difference between the two except that in MIHOP, there could be an X-team of clandestine operatives who carry out operations designed to give the A-team exactly what it wants. In this case, an example of an X-team would be the crew who rigs the Towers with explosives. Another example could be the individuals who are remotely piloting any of the planes (original or drone). These X-team operatives insured that the Pentagon was hit in the empty section. MIHOP proponents argue that the risk of pure LIHOP would be too great; for example the hijackers could crash into Rumsfeld's office, or strike a nuclear power plant instead, which would have rendered much of the country uninhabitable.

Flight 93 mysteries are also explored, from the Cleveland Airport mystery (Did flight 93 make an emergency landing?) to the possibility of a USAF shoot-down. I think that whatever object was flying over PA was shot down, whether it was the original plane or a substituted one. The supposed bin Laden confession videos are also discussed.

An amazing book. The fact that this, in addition to Griffin, is hitting the corporate bookshelves, is not only a testament to the First Amendment itself, but a glimmer of hope that people are finally waking up! Part of it has been the luxury of time. On 9/12/01, we had yet to see how the US would respond. Now we know BushCo lied about the WMDs, Saddam's non-existent ties to al Qaeda, and the non-relationship between Iraq and 9/11. We are at a period in American history now where many citizens, in the privacy of their hearts, are asking themselves if these same people are just as blatantly lying about 9/11 itself.
