Good.......1999-10-13
This is a readable and often entertaining look at the shallow world of fashion. It makes glaringly obvious that the term "fashion genius" is a contradiction in terms. Anyone who pays too much for a designer label, should read this book, and be cured of such silly behavior.

"Who Is The Black Panther?": A Classic Hero Becomes Relevant to the 21st Century.......2006-07-04
I was aware of the Black Panther when I began reading comics, but only began to take him seriously because of Christopher Priest's very political, unpredictable take on the King of Wakanda. So, naturally, the guy who followed Priest would have to bring a similarly brilliant concept for me to buy the relaunced Black Panther.
Filmmaker/TV producer turned comic writer Reginald Hudlin proved up to the task by posing a simple question in "Who Is the Black Panther?":
"How would the world react to an high-tech, wealthy African nation (Wakanda) that has never been conquered?"
That premise brings Wakanda down from an abstract fantasyland into a more grounded country with historic relevance. Those who normally dismiss the superhero genre as vapid, juvenile power fantasies give Hudlin's Black Panther a second look because his concept bucks the mass media image of Africans as either dumb savages or perpetual victims. In fact, some of these former skeptics wind up buying the book.
Hudlin's more realistic take on Wakanda also answers unspoken questions in the Black Panther's comic book mythology. After seeing their neighbors exploited and devastated by Europeans, Arabs, and even other Africans, Wakanda's distrust of outsiders makes perfect sense. This mindset also explains Wakanda's advanced technology, which was developed to not only improve the country's standard of living, but also defend it from would-be conquerors.
There have been some long-time comic fans who argue that Black Panther addressing historic events like the enslavement and colonization of Africa is inappropriate and even "racist." I find that logic amusing considering that:
*Captain America fought in a real war, World War II.
*X-Men foe Magneto survived the real horrors of the Holocaust.
*Alan Moore's Watchmen tackled the Cold War and even the still controversial Vietnam War head on.
So, if these historic events are fine for superhero comics, then Reggie Hudlin's Black Panther is no less acceptable. Besides, veteran Panther writer Don McGregor used the Wakandan king to address such thorny issues as lynchings in the USA and apartheid-era South Africa.
Now, don't think that "Who Is the Black Panther?" is just dry lectures on the past. The story has thrilling, epic action and stunning vistas made all the more gripping by its compelling characters. This is especially true of T'Challa, whom I honestly now like on a personal level thanks to Hudlin. The Panther is a hero whose cunning, cultural sophistication, and regal status belies a flesh and blood human being who can be frustrated by his rebellious younger sister or offer comfort to Wakanda's youngest subjects. On this level, T'Challa is much like the late Princess Di, another royal who was popular because she was so approachable.
Hence, Hudlin's Black Panther is not only is truer to Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's original vision, but also thankfully defies the unfortunate PC trend of Black comic heroes as flawless, emotionless, and thus boring icons. I think you can credit Hudlin's experience in film and TV for such well-rounded portrayals of his characters.
So, despite my skepticism, Reginald Hudlin has done right by the Black Panther. A character that too often has been treated as a dated symbol at best and a second-rate Tarzan at worst has been evolved into the formidable superhero and international player that he truly is. In the process, Hudlin makes readers take a broader view of the world while not skimping on the comic's entertainment value.
Miss the good old days.......2006-06-08
Simply put, this book is not good. Anyone looking for quality BP stories should buy the trades written by Priest. It throws away much of what happens before and is very confusing. Also, as someone else said, the outside world is stupid and ignorant while Wakanda is perfect and seemingly without fault...kind of silly.
I'd tell you to pass on this one.
:(.......2006-06-08
I thought this book missed the target in many ways. Among them, there is an excessive amount of the author going to the extreme. What I mean is that instead of the Wakandian's having advanced medical techniques, they instead throw around casually that they have the cure for cancer. These kind of throwaway lines occur again and again; it gets old fast and eventually starts ripping the reader out of the story. Another extreme is that Hudlin makes the world outside of Wakanda out to be completely ignorant and horrible while Wakanda is shown as being a perfect paradise; again, middle grounds on both would have been much more believeable and effective. Also, it seems the title character is now retconned into being the son of the Black Panther that readers have known for 40 years now. This comes off as confusing and, to me, unecessary. Romita's art is as always gorgeous but I don't feel it comes close to making this book worth a read.
Created....a new Black Panther fan.......2006-05-12
I've been a diehard comic fan for over 25 years now.
My exposure to the Black Panther has been limited to the occasional team-up or limited series. I'd heard of Priest's run but, never read it. (Though I have now and love it.)
Yes, some things are changed from the original stories.
These are comics after all and long time heroes may be revealed to be clones or have new powers emerge to be like another hero who's on a hot streak with the reading public. (sigh)
In any case, I take this as somewhat of a revisioning of the Panther and it holds up well. The writing is tight and Hudlin "knows" T'Challa and where he wants to take him.
Everyone keeps calling the Panther the "black" Captain America and it's true in a sense but, not limited to that description either. Both are symbols of all that is great about their country and society. Both are brave, strong, awesome fighters, and smart leaders who lead by example not just words.
Where the symbolism and heroism stops for both, the Panther picks up again.
Panther is a world power unto himself and is presented as such in this series. (And the Priest works)
The always wonderful and dynamic Romita Jr. is in top form and I hope this team stays together for a more than a few issues.
This is an overall great comic with a little political undercurrent between the lines. (And sometimes right in your face. i.e. the Halliburton comment)
I finished it and immediately read it again and now consider myself a Panther fan. Fantastic stuff. Enjoy.
Great New Take on an Old Superhero.......2006-04-28
Black Panther has been around for many years but has never been embraced by the comic buying public. He is a great character that should be as well known as Spider-Man, Superman or Batman.
When Christopher Priest was writing Black Panther's adventures the series became one of the best reviewed comics around but still failed to find a significant audience.
Now we have a new writer (Reginald Hudlin) taken a shot at plotting the exploits of Black Panther and he is off to a good start. We get an exciting new origin and plenty of background information in this tale. Once you read this you can understand the character and his motivations. This is only the beginning. Hudlin provides plenty of thrills and surprises in the subsequent stories that follow this one in the series.
Some will continue to reject the adventures of Black Panther but those with an open mind looking for a good story and a great hero will embrace it.

A decor book for the artist within.......2005-06-12
As professional home stylist and a lover of all things creative, I purchased this book. I was afraid it was going to be all cutesy country but it was not. It does have a lot of vintage items in great vignettes but is also has chapters on "Bohemian Rhapsody" - ethnic decor, and a chapter entitled "The bare necessities"- which expounds on the "less is more" look. If you want a home that says, "An artist lives here"; this book will give you great ideas and inspiration. This book is now one of my favorites in my extensive decorating book collection.
homes with personality.......2004-08-18
This is a beautiful book showcasing homes with personality. The rooms aren't all "decoratory" and precisely "country" or "traditional." Judge the book on its own merits (which are many), not on the basis that the photos have appeared in a magazine before.
A Mary Engelbreit Re-Do.......2001-06-29
Disappointment as I am a charter subscriber to Mary Englebreit's magazine. Subscribers to Mary's wonderful magazine entitled Home Companion should note that much of this work is reprinted from the magazines. This should've been stated so unsuspecting buyers wouldn't repurchase what they already have. If you don't subscribe to the magazine this would be a wonderful book to own. It is filled with great photos of inspirational ideas for incorporating into our own homes.
Note if You have been a subscriber to Home Companion.......2001-06-23
Unfortunately this book "recycled" alot of content from back issues of Mary Engelbreit Home Companion magazine. Not much here for Mary's loyal subscribers. Mary, why didn't you offer us something new?
reruns are so disappointing!.......2001-01-14
I imagine there are already used copies of this brand new book for sale because if you are a ME fan, you've seen it all before in the magazine. It's really annoying to open a new book by a favorite author to find that you recognize the material on every page! To some extent the last book by ME, "Paint" presented the same situation...lots of reruns, but this one has even more used material. I wish authors would reveal that previously published material is being used in a book. Most true ME fans are always hungry for more, I hope she gives it to us in her next book.

Read it carefully with a creative approach.......2007-08-23
The book is excellent: it has all the elements to make you a guru in your own niche - BUT - you must read it carefully and able to think laterally in order to make in in the 60 days.
Use the power of collaboration and delegation and you see that is all feasible in the 60 days allotted.
If you really want to make it this book provides you a blueprint but it's you, the one who must make it a priority in your life and make it happen.
Solid stuff.......2007-05-27
This book is full of good, solid material for anyone looking at expanding their personal "brand", whether they're entrepeneurs, people starting non-profits or just trying to get their message out.
While I can hardly claim to follow the advice on every page, I was pleasantly surprised to find out I've been doing much of this in growing The Cranky Middle Manager podcast [...].. thanks Robert
Awesome Book With a MISLEADING TITLE!.......2007-01-03
I had to dock this book one star because the title is VERY misleading. The worst part about it is that Bly KNOWS you can't become a recognized authority in ANY field in 60 days or less.
He has a step-by-step outline starting from A to Z on how to gain credibility in your field. The unfortunate part is that the outline takes a MINIMUM of 1 year to complete. You can't even complete the first "phase" of the plan within 60 days because it encompasses writing magazine articles which take SEVERAL MONTHS to come out in a magazine.
Furthermore, the basis of MASSIVE credibility is publishing a book. Once you sit down and write it, even if you complete it in 60 days, you still have to wait for it to be published which can take up to 2 years!
I disagree with Bly when he recommends conventional publishing while being AGAINST self-publishing. There are MANY very good vanity publishing houses that can turn out a very professional book and can do it within WEEKS versus waiting YEARS for a regular publisher to release your book.
It would seem that Bly would have embraced self-publishing which would have actually lent his (b.s.) book title more believability. I can write a book within about 30 days and have it self-published within 6 weeks. Not exactly 60 days but DAMN CLOSE!
Even Joe Vitale disagrees with Bly about the self-publishing avenue. As you know, Joe Vitale started a HUGE CAREER self-publishing his first books. Then major publishers showed interest and decided to publish Joe in the conventional way.
Bly claims that the general public won't purchase a self-published book but would prefer books by major publishing houses. NONSENSE! Most people don't have a clue what the difference is between a major publisher and a vanity press.
I gave this book four stars because, if you can IGNORE the whole "60 day" thing, this is a VERY GOOD BOOK and I don't believe there is another one like it that covers this subject thoroughly.
I recommend this book. Just pretend that Bly "meant" 6 months instead of 60 days (and that's if you SELF PUBLISH) or 2 years if you choose a conventional publisher.
Don't let the title throw you...........2006-03-10
At first glance the title would lead you to believe that this book will come across more like a cheesy infomercial than a thoughtful down to earth how-to book.
It is, in fact written in a very straight forward manner that is very useful for those of us in a position of needing to assert the perception of authority in a short period of time.
I was very pleasantly surprised at how "real" this book comes across, with very simple long and short-term goals to follow.
Winning advice.......2005-09-08
Very solid advice for professionals, consultants and service business owners. As a marketing consultant and teacher, I recommend the book to any professional who is serious about creating multiple streams of income from an information empire. And Bly is someone who preaches what he practices.
Book Description
A fantastically eccentric true crime caper that does for coastal
Oregon
what Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil did for
Savannah
.
Just a few months out of law school, Bill Merritt takes a job working for a slightly shady but charismatic lawyer named Thaddeus Silk. Only months later, Thaddeus drops dead of a heart attack, and Bill is left to pick up the pieces of his chaotic and poorly managed practice. Before he can even start to make sense of the mess that was Thaddeus’s legal life, the police are knocking at his door, and Bill is being accused of fencing stolen treasure. Enter Abby Birdsong and Grady Jackson, two clients of Thaddeus’s whose files are among the boxes and papers and bourbon bottles that litter his office. Drug charges had been brought against Abby for carrying two pounds of pot in her bag; and Grady seeks a permit from the state of Oregon to dig for treasure on a local beach. Bill takes on both of their cases, which, on the face of it, aren’t related. When the two cases collide in ways that seem too fantastic to be true, Bill finds himself caught in the middle.
How Thaddeus and Bill, Abby and Grady, assorted law enforcement officials and colorful hangers-on overlap and interconnect took Bill another nineteen years to puzzle out. The result is an intricate and original legal yarn with a cast of provincial misfits so peculiar and charming it reads like fiction.
Customer Reviews:
Mediocre Fiction.......2006-06-05
Why was this book in the non-fiction section at the library? I can understand changing the names of people but counties? There is no Siletz County, Oregon. Why not make up the state too? As fiction there leaves a lot to be desired. The back jacket says"truth is stranger than fiction". Either write non-fiction with names changed to protect identities or write a compelling novel. This is neither.
Wonderfully entertaining story.......2006-05-09
Bill Merritt has written a wonderfully entertaining fable about young lawyers learning the ropes, a delightful cast of society's castaways, buried treasure and even a little bit of science.
Because Merritt casts himself as the central character, it is necessary to remember that this is fiction - or at least Merritt says so: "Author's note: This book isn't journalism. It is filled with made-up individuals, composite characters, and descriptions that do not match anything in the real world. If you think something in here is about you, it isn't. And, if you think you are going to make a big deal out of it, I've got plenty more on you that doesn't appear in the book, so think again."
Within a few pages, of course, you'll have forgotten the warning, so compelling is Merritt's first-person narrative. The characters are compelling and believable.
There's Thaddeus Silk, now deceased, who hires Merritt as an associate in his small, highly suspect law office. Silk's death from natural causes brings in the police, an aggressive DA, the bar association disciplinary committee and others. Thaddeus, it seems, had long been suspected of a variety of nefarious dealings, including fencing a long rumored Spanish treasure that had been buried on Oregon's cost.
Merritt provides a fascinating recounting of the legends of Neahkahnie Mountain where, it is said, a treasure is buried. Along the way, Merritt also provides an unexpected explanation of trade winds and the history of Spanish trade a few centuries ago. Utterly unexpected, these facts provide both elements of the main plot and an unusual backstory. Good work, indeed.
When Thaddeus Silk shuffles off the mortal coil, Merritt is left the task of picking up the pieces of his mentor's practice. There's Grady Jackson, seemingly a harmlessly befuddled treasure hunter who, in his youth, had been a heroic soldier. Jolene, the office receptionist, was hired by Thaddeus on a work-release program after Thaddeus had bungled her case. Her boyfriend Tail Pipe lives largely on another planet. Abby Birdsong is an aging hippy with a marijuana possession charge against her that just keeps getting bigger.
Soon Merritt himself is facing indictment by an aggressive DA.
The story has plenty of twists and turns as Merritt, still a young and inexperienced lawyer, makes his way through one predicament after another. In terms of handling humor, Merritt is an ace. His storytelling flows smoothly, anchoring your sympathy to Merritt as the subject and eliciting boos and catcalls for the evil guys (who really aren't all that evil: just kind of dumb).
It would be unfair to detail the story to any extent. Take my word for it: there's not a dull page in the book. There's also no sex, no immediate gore, no cliffhangers: just out-of-the-ordinary situations with some pretty oddball characters.
Summer's almost here; the weather's getting nicer: this is the perfect beach read.
Jerry
or maybe a one..........2006-04-25
i have a couple of problems with this book.but we'll get to them later.
there is an awful lot to like about this book. the characters are quirky and fun. the writing is breezy and entertaining. there are multiple twists and turns that are (usually) resolved in some outrageously funny way. and the ending was (to me)unexpected and intriguing.
a really good read for an airport or beach.
so what problems did i have? well, the first is minor. i found this book in the non-fiction section. it clearly is not that. there was an "author's note" on the copyright page that, if given a little more prominence, handled the issue. or publish as a work of fiction. either one.
the other problem is much more serious.
one anecdote intregal to the story is the "tale of the soldier who wouldn't make his bed." (strangely, it is important to the story).
it is also plagarised. in 1956, leo rosten wrote "captain neuman m.d.". chapter seven is entitled "the happiest man in the world". and is the story of colby clay, a soldier who wouldn't make his bed. now,i'm not a lawyer. i don't even play one on tv.
but i'm pretty certain that taking a chapter from someone else's work without attribution is considered a no-no in polite society.
so if you just want an entertaining couple of hours, read this book. it's fun.
if you think that plagarism is something that should be discouraged, i'd pass.
Funny, well-told story!.......2006-04-11
The introduction at the La Jolla bookstore said it all: cross between John Berendt and Ken Kesey, or carl Hiassen and Vince Bugliosi -- or as he put it, reminiscent of Mark Twain.
A Very Entertaining Read!.......2006-04-06
Merritt's book is a blast to read. He paints a fascinating and fun cast of characters, and the narrative really makes you wonder what the heck has been going on on the Oregon coast for the past few hundred years!
Book Description
On 6 April, the German 2nd and 12th Armies, Italian 2nd and 9th Armies, and the Hungarian 4th, 5th and Mobile Corps invaded Yugoslavia from Italy, Germany, Rumania, Bulgaria and Albania. Few of the Royal Yugoslav Army's 30 divisions actively resisted, and after 11 days the Yugoslav High Command surrendered. In Croatia, a puppet state was installed. Axis forces quickly occupied the principal towns and patrolled the main road and rail links, but in the villages, countryside and mountains a vicious and complex guerrilla war was brewing. This title takes a close look at the German, Italian, Croatian, Serbian, Montenegrin, Bulgarian, Macedonian, and Slovenian units that fought for the Axis powers in Yugoslavia.

Excellant Book for the study of military history........2003-03-15
This book is excellant for the study of military history. People seem to be angry that the book does not explain the brutality of the NDH. Well, the book was not written to explain this. There are plenty of books for that subject. To speak of being slanted, those books do not explain the Armies of the Balkans as anything more than "Nazi Drones". To speak from an intellectual standpoint, I wanted to learn about the uniforms, officers, and internal workings of the Axis forces in Yugoslavia. I find this a big coincidence that this is also the title of the book. .... The NDH was a horribile fascist regime. I'm not denying this. But some people joined to make an Independant State of Croatia. Just the same as not all Germans were Nazis. .... This book is about military units, and in that regard, it is superb with excellant drawing, photos, and diagrams. Lets drop the propaganda, and political agendas, and study historical facts.
Very one sided book.......1999-11-17
The book is one sided and does not describe the situation the way it really was.
Informative.......1999-02-26
An interesting primer that illustrates the military garb of those units which collaborated with the Nazi German, Fascist Italian, Fascist Hungarian, and Royalist Bulgarian occupiers of WW 2 Yugoslavia. There are only a couple of drawbacks to this book. First, maybe because of the Croatian ethnicity of one of the authors and the illustrator, the absolute brutality of the NDH (Independent State of Croatia) is not really made clear to those new to the subject. Also, the portrayal of the Royalist Chetniks (ethnic Serbian and Montenegrin forces) as monolithic, and the instances of their collaboration as other than adhoc and incidental,is not entirley accurate. The biggest evidence against such charges against the Chetniks is the saving of over 400 Allied, mainly American, downed aircrewmen in the summer of 1944. Operation Halyard, as it was called, could not have been if the majority of Chetnik forces had not actively hid the airmen from the Fascist forces. Richard Felman, one of those Americans rescued thanks to the Chetniks, wrote an autobiography on the subject and campaigned for many years to have the complex history of the Chetniks accepted in the History field.

I was very pleased with the product, and I was pleased with how quickly I received it.
No pronunciation guide under the pictures.......2007-09-04
Nice idea, but it does only half the work. It shows you how to write the words and sentences, but not how to pronounce them, which is extremely important for ESL students. To see how a word is pronounced, you have to check the index, which works just like a regular, non-picture dictionary.
Excellent for Teaching or Tutoring Multiskill Classes.......2007-05-28
A practical took for tutoring and teaching ESL students of multiple levels. Often, a picture really is worth a thousand words - especially if the student doesn't know a thousand words!
Besides, every single object has a name... and sometimes I can't think of the precise word. This book solves that problem. You ask students to turn to the appropriate page, and at least buy some time. You will almost all find the word and object.
By the way, this book can also be an excellent supplement text for intermediate classes. In a better world of more and smaller ESL classes, you would find this class sets of this textbook in Beginning, High Beginning, Intermediate Low and even Intermediate High classes. Flexible, informative, and practical, the Oxford Picture Dictionary remains a must for ESL programs, instructors, and tutors.

I used this with a group of adult students from West Africa. They were the ones who decided to purchase the book out of their own pockets because they found it so helpful. They speak French and very little English. I do not speak French. The book was quite valuable.
Great .......2005-04-25
This is great for English language learners. It's organized by sections and is easy to understand. The only drawback is it's ehtnocentric towards the USA and this wouldnt be good for english learners living in Britain.

Not really for English speakers........2007-08-28
Although its great to have pictures and words together, especially for those of us who learn faster with visual aids, this book is difficult to use for native English speakers. Why? Because accent marks are not provided, nor declensions, nor the two dots over the "e" that distinguish between the letters "yo" and "ye." In other words, in order to benefit from this dictionary, an English speaker has to look up every word in a separate dictionary to find out all the above information when learning the words. Otherwise, what is learned will be only part of what is needed. So, since English is my native language, I give this book 2 stars. It would be great to find a book like this one meant for learners of Russian.
Fabulous Quick Reference.......2007-08-15
I took Russian for nine years in the Chicago Public Schools, and this was one of my greatest references. Granted, it is not meant to be the ONLY tool a student of Russian will use. I compare this book to Richard Scarry's Greatest Word Book Ever, except with Russian words for everything pictured. And don't be fooled by the "Picture Dictionary" title. This is not merely for children. I am 24 years old, and trying to re-learn some Russian, and am still using this great book. This would be a great reference for any student of Russian.
Fantastic!.......2007-07-01
As a native English-speaking, beginning student of Russian language, I am finding this a very useful book. The format is great for me because I learn well visually. Each page is a busy picture (e.g. "In the Living Room", "Outdoor Activities") with relevant items in the picture numbered. Under the picture is a legend to provide the name of each object from the picture in English and Russian (in Cyrillic). It is a fantastic resource because there are so many objects and situations: just about every action and activity in the house, most of the animals in the zoo, etc...
For native Russian speakers, the book provides English pronunciations. Unfortunately, the same is not given for the Russian words (though once I master Cyrillic, I imagine this will be unneccesary.) Overall, this is a great reference for English and Russian speakers to build their vocabulary and easily answer their own questions as they come up.
very helpful part of a language program.......2006-12-13
As an ESL tutor I simply love these books. Each page provides a lesson's worth of vocab for practice in sentences. The latter pages (eg. prepositions) are less useful when tutoring someone illiterate in their own language, especially if the tutor is not bilingual, but because the pictures are so clear, even point-and-say usually works. True, these books don't have any pronunciation guides for Russians learning English or Americans learning Russian, but they are an excellent tool for tutoring; I don't expect everything from a picture dictionary that I would from interactive language software.
Russian/English Picture Book.......2006-07-04
Wonderful book!! Saw it first in Spanish/English version. Was very happy to find it in Russian for my wife. It has been very helpful to her.

Book Description
A jewel-toned hummingbird is poised elegantly at a flower, seemingly motionless even as its purring wings trace perpetual figure eights. Ounce for ounce the Hercules among birds, yet small enough to get lost in a teacup, hummers spend their days tirelessly darting among flowers, probing for calorie-rich nectar with their needlelike bills. Whether viewed as animated energy or nature's still life, no two organisms are more perfectly suited to each other than hummingbirds and flowers. In
Hummingbirds 2005, celebrate one of nature's most successful partnerships as world-renowned wildlife photographers chronicle this harmonious marriage between bird and blossom.
