5 out of 5 stars AN EXPLORATION OF A UNIQUE WORLD.......2001-01-14

Belgian-born poet/artist Henri Michaux was, depending upon your source, either an enigmatic genius or an enfant terrible. Maurice Blanchot called him "l'ange du bizarre." Whatever the appellation, his oeuvre was the surreal.

An inveterate traveler, Michaux made Paris his home in 1922. At about the same time the writer began drawing, and then wed his graphic works to his poetic endeavors. He wielded ink like a sword, parrying, jabbing, slashing it on paper. This was an exercise that he believed released subconscious expression. Later, he became accomplished in the use of watercolor.

"Untitled Passages By Henri Michaux," so titled due to the artist's large number of untitled drawings and his book "Passages," is not only the first collection of his work but is a masterful blending of texts and images, enabling one to further explore the unique world of Henri Michaux.

5 out of 5 stars Furs in Fashion--the Back Story!.......2003-08-29

One of three fascinating books on Furs in Fashion (the other two in the series are Men in Fur and Ladies in Furs 1940-1980). Highly recommended for its wonderful illustrations...as well as for the backstory on society and fashionable fur wearers--from royalty to movie stars. You have to admire the ingenuity of a style that in the face of WWII deprivations managed to make style out of skunk and invented fur spats to help keep ladies cozy.

4 out of 5 stars Livin' it!.......2006-03-29

They are the few, the proud... the geeky.

John Kovalic continues to tap into geekiness of all stripes in the fourth Dork Tower collection, "Livin' La Vida Dorka." This collection isn't really a cohesive one; instead, it's a bunch of odds and ends that Kovalic put together, but the end result is still a hilarious book.

It starts off with a long stream of gaming-related jokes: Cons, playing Dungeons and Dragons ("Send the thief"), Igor's trauma when he is unableto get the latest Playstation, game cons, playing "Tax Returns," and betting the rent money on a sports game... which is something that gamer geeks should never do, apparently.

Then it's onto corporate and pop culture geekiness. Think "Dilbert," but without an evil boss. Kovalic focuses on Microsoft, hacking, music downloads, Internet idiocy in the wake of 9/11, and designing attractive video game characters. And most horrific of all: Carson is forced to use an antiquated 56K modem, which goes at the same rate as a dead hamster. Finally, there's a funny guide to i-managers in the final pages, which explores communications managers throughout history ("A bear ate your intern").

Kovalic's mocking sense of humour can inject geekiness into any situation, from baseball games to door-to-door evangelists ("Well, I'd like to tell YOU about the Disciples of Zorbug, Despoiler of Worlds and Conquerer of Chaos!"). He's even making fun of himself by the end of Section 2.

His artwork tends to be very simple and straightforward, with likably balloon-headed characters, ranging fromtall and balding to short and square. They live in a world of D&D gaming, and seem to center their lives around defeating the dragon and sacrificing the thief.

But don't worry, geeks. Kovalic laughs with you, not at you. Even as he pokes fun at geekiness, he also observes that the rest of the world has its own obsessions, oddities and jokes that don't make sense. The one problem is that some of the jokes have dated in the past five years (Napster and "Whazzup?" among them), but most of the jokes are still funny (Microsoft).

"Livin' La Vida Dorka" is another hilarious collection of Dork Tower strips, showing again just how hilarious John Kovalic can be.

5 out of 5 stars Calling all gamers! This is a must-have book!.......2002-09-28

More hilarity from the wonderfully wacky world of Origins Award winning cartoonist and scribe John Kovalic, this collecion of Dork Tower comic strips is so good it makes me do the macarena and the electric slide at the same time! All gamers, friends of gamers and long-suffering relatives of gamers must own it! If you like it as much as I think you will, you should scramble to get copies of Dork Covenant (available on Amazon.com) and Dork Shadows (both are great compilations of the world of Dork Tower) If you have ever played D&D or any other Roleplaying Game, if you like computer gaming, love your Playstation II, XBox, CCG's and other signs of the geek...Livin' La Vida Dorka is a party on paper!

5 out of 5 stars Laugh, laugh, laugh, laugh, and laugh!.......2002-09-06

Kovalic compiled comics he wrote for the Internet, specifically his own webpage (www.dorktower.com), Interactive Weekly, among other sites, into one fantastic book. Those who have read these comics online will laugh again and again. Those who have yet to enjoy the offerings of Kovalic and his dorky world will enjoy a good laugh about computer problems, game problems, and just trying to live in a world that is frequently stranger than you are.

5 out of 5 stars Uncover the real world and rediscover what really matters.......2006-09-30

I'm in my mid 30s and felt this book was aimed at the general public, not just kids. As I read this, I realized how much I had either never bothered to learn or was too busy in the business world to bother. This made me step back and reassess where I was spending my energies in career versus community. A very good book.

4 out of 5 stars Feel Better Fast.......2003-10-09

A non-comprehensive but very useful guide, and initially I thought mostly aimed at children, or at least adults helping children learn the skills behind the good deeds. The only thing missing here is the glaringly absent thank-you owed to Boy and Girl Scouting, as keepers of the Good Deed flame.

But beyond that, it's all in the introduction - what a gift to receive the reminder in our cold, cynical world that good deeds are truly the way to make a difference. It's a simple message, but a profound one to the individual now. Even skilled adults will learn a thing or two as the authors encourage letting our good deed reach exceed our grasp.

Divided into four sections (first aid, friends and neighbors, strangers, and community), the randomish selection of good deeds plumb skill levels from the elementary (making chicken soup for a sick friend) to the truly friendship-as-art (helping a friend quit smoking or comforting a grieving friend).

A sure-fire balm for the urban cynic (highly recommended post-election for Californians).

    Book Description

    The Holocaust took place far from the United States and involved few Americans, yet rather than receding, this event has assumed a greater significance in the American consciousness with the passage of time. In the depths of the 1940s and 1950s, when the term Holocaust as we now use it had not yet been invented, when survivors were silent and stigmatized, and when the destruction of European Jewry did not figure in public discourse, who could have predicted that the Holocaust would move so forcefully to the center of American culture? Yet today the Holocaust has been admitted into the mainstream media and has become the subject of profitable and high-profile film and television projects. Survivors have become sought-after authorities, whose stories are told not only in books but aloud before respectful audiences on special days of remembrance, and vast projects have been undertaken to interview survivors on videotape before their testimony is no longer available. As a window into the process whereby the Holocaust has been appropriated in American culture, Hollywood movies are particularly luminous. Popular Culture and the Shaping of Holocaust Memory in America examines reactions to three films: Judgment at Nuremberg (1961), The Pawnbroker (1965), and Schindler's List (1992), and considers what those reactions reveal about the place of the Holocaust in the American mind, and how those films have shaped the popular perception of the Holocaust. It also considers the difference in the reception of the two earlier films when they first appeared in the sixties and retrospective evaluations of them from closer to our own times. Alan Mintz also addresses the question of how Americans will shape the memory of the Holocaust in the future, concluding with observations on the possibilities and limitations of what is emerging as the major resource for the shaping of Holocaust memory--videotaped survivor testimony. The Holocaust will undoubtedly continue to occupy a place of prominence in the American psyche. Popular Culture and the Shaping of Holocaust Memory in America examines some of the influences behind the broad and deep changes in American consciousness and the social forces that permitted the Holocaust to move from the margins to the center of American discourse.

              5 out of 5 stars Good stuff for a great game!.......2001-06-01

              It has a similar layout to White Wolf's other Player's Guidebooks. New Merits and Traits (Internet Savvy, Uneducated) new classes (the Hermit and the Wayward) and an absolute ton of ideas on how to create and play an average human being (a surprisingly difficult task at times).

              I have most of the stuff that has been put out for Hunter so far, and this would come right after the Survival Guide in order of usefulness and game expansion. The Hermit class is EXTREMELY interesting (they hear voices from the Messengers constantly) and the Merits/Flaws really help to round out a character (there's a fair bit more than just the standard merits/flaws that find their way into all the player's guides).

              The roleplaying tips and ideas are realy nice, especially concerning what types of people are likely to pick up a given creed. There are some interesting rules presented on changing creeds as well (you were an innocent, but you've seen enough, etc.) which make good sense. A whole section on Bystanders is a nice addition as well (they hint that many Bystanders are failed Hunters - ones who heard the call but failed to act).

              There's more here than I can lay down, suffice it to say if you've picked up the main book and want to delve deeper into the roleplaying of Hunter this is definetly a worthwhile purchase.

              Book Description

              Creating the Project Office is written for managers who are searching for ways to transform their organizations into more effective and efficient project-based workplaces. As this important book reveals, there is no more effective way to make that change than to create a project office tailored to the needs of the organization. While a project office model leads to better products from projects, it is also a vehicle for generating overall organizational change— by transforming the organization from function-based to project-based. This model incorporates projects into the very fabric of the organizational strategy and revitalizes organizations, creates competitive advantage, and increases shareholder value.

              5 out of 5 stars Common sense applied to change management, wrapped in a bow!.......2004-12-02

              I purchased this book on recommendation from a previous reviewer and was amazed by the breadth, depth, and more importantly pace of the book. The book moves quickly and does not spend a lot of time on theory, more time on examples (drawn mainly from Englund's work at HP).

              The high level process applies as a general change management agenda, but applied through the lense of a PMO or project office. The annecdotes and lessons learnt provide an excellent framework for either internal "change agents" or external consultants to structure a successful organizational change and increase in proejct delivery quality.

              The examples and frameworks in the book are easily understood and presented in a way that they can be reused or applied to many different project management challenges. I highly recommend this book to program managers or IT consultants who are intereste in affecting change in any organization.

              5 out of 5 stars Unusually rich.......2003-03-26

              This book takes the leading thinking in implementing organizational change and applies it directly to the challenge of implementing project management. The authors then advance the art through the application of their extensive experience and original thought that leaves the reader-practitioner with a step-by-step guide to implementing a project management office.

              The major strength of this manuscript is its revelation of the organizational challenges in creating a project office, their causes, and straightforward advice on navigating the pitfalls. The knowledge and experience of the authors comes through with `been there, done that' credibility. The reader leaves with a deeper understanding of their organization and the means for achieving their goal of implementing a project office.

              I thought Part One was one of the best discussions I have seen of the organizational change factors involved in implementing a project office. It provided thorough overall coverage on the existing body of work in organizational change and provided an application to project management. The author's contribution of speaking truth to power is valuable.

              I found the manuscript replete with illustrative material. I particularly liked the anecdotes from Greek mythology and literature. This book is unusually rich in supporting the principles advocated with clear `how-to' instructions. As a practitioner reading the book, I found myself saying: "Yes, that works," "I wish I had thought of that sooner," and "I am going to use that tomorrow." - a manuscript reviewer

              Step through the other side of the wardrobe and meet the creator of the Chronicles of Narnia — the man whose rich imagination and deep faith made this fantasy series a favorite for generations.

              This reformatted photo biography, with more than 50 photographs, tells the story of C. S. Lewis's life and work, from his boyhood in Belfast, Ireland, where he and his brother created their first imaginary world in an attic hideaway, to Lewis's adult years as a renowned scholar and beloved author.

              5 out of 5 stars The Man The Myth The Christian.......2004-06-02

              Gormley wonderfully takes you through the journey of C.S. Lewis' childhood story writing days, and continues you onto his more mature and very obscure writing style as his life progresses. Through the whole biography she slowly gives you little hints about Lewis' humor, fear, and family problems. We not only learn about this intuitive storyteller but we are introduced to a man that followed earnestly after the heart of God not only in his personal life but also we see this through his novels. Nearing the end of this life explained we receive the background of one of his most famous novel sets, The Chronicles of Narnia.
              When reading this there is one thing that will stand out among any other biography written about Lewis. It not only talks about Lewis' profound ability to create wonderful stories that can take a person to places that were previously unimagined. But this book also shows the very hard and personal adversity that Lewis had to triumph over in order to create a great world for others that he wishes he could actually be living in.
              Doing this not only gives us a better background on Lewis but it makes him more of a personal author by showing that he struggled with some of the same things that we struggle with, and not just a high and mighty man of fiction.
              Even with all of the great attributes of this book there was one drawback when reading it. Gormley moves very very slow through his life. I feel that she has included too many useless facts about Lewis that do not give us any insight into his personal life or his writing style and motivation. This not only makes Lewis' life appear to be boring, but it also makes you the reader loose interest at key points in Lewis' life. But all in all if you want to delve into the mind and life of one of the most influential writers of the 19th century this is your book.

              4 out of 5 stars Dymanic and Superb!.......2000-04-03

              This book tells the life of one of the greatest storytellers of all time. It tells of his life in step-by-step review in easy wording for the average reader. I find this book extremely touching in many ways. One of these is how spiritually he was in his books. Each having a Christian theme to it. It also tells of his hard lfie in childhood which eventually led him to the Lord. This book recognizes his master pieces such as "The Chronicles of Narnia" and my all time favorite "Perelandra". It show the humble life this man lead and directed to his readers. This book gives a accurate description on his life. The only problem is the "choppyness" (gaps in his life, etc.). But other than that this book holds a spiritual and mental meaning for us all.

              Book Description

              By December 1950, the dramatic entrance of Communist China into the war had forced the retreat of U.S., South Korean, and other United Nations troops from the Yalu River back into South Korea. In February, 1951, near a central South Korean town named wonju, UN forces finally quit running and started fighting--and stopped the Chinese juggernaut cold.

              Just as the Battleo of Gettysburg was the high water mark of the Confederacy's bid for secession, the Chinese offensive launched at Wonju was the high point from which China's hopes for victory soon faded. This is the first book to show that after fifteen days of combat at Wonju, Chinese leaders realized that they could not win the war andcould possibly lose it. On this not particularly well-known battlefield, UN forces led by brave U.S. and South Korean fighting men ensured South Korean independence. These battles reinvigorated the UN war effort, thanks in no small part to the leadership of the U.S. Eighth Army's new commander, Lt. Gen. Matthew Ridgway. J.D. Coleman's comparison bewteen the pivotal battles of Wonju and Gettysburg is original and thought-provoking.

              5 out of 5 stars Well written.......2007-09-21

              I am not qualified to comment on his ability as an historian, though nothing here is contradicted by other books I have read, but I must say that the author writes well. I was put off by the book's appearance at first but once I began I found it a very enjoyable read, and it covers much that I did not find elsewhere

              3 out of 5 stars Not very comprehensive.......2003-05-17

              JD Coleman has attempted to illustrate how the battles around Wonju were the high-water mark for the Chinese, much as Gettysburg was the beginning of the end for the Confederates. There is an interesting account of a task force all but wiped out in what became known as "massacre valley" but most of the book has been recounted elsewhere, in greater depth. The author spends a substatial amount of time on the 187th Airborne RCT (his old outfit) and while this is interesting in its detail, the author tends to dwell a little too long on it. Most of these accounts revolve around one or two companies and this gives a disjointed perspective which magnifies things out of proportion to what's going on elsewhere.

              3 out of 5 stars Fascinating but long first-person account.......2003-04-25

              This is a fascinating first-person account of the brutality of the Forgotten War. It's equally fascinating to us today how America and China both paid dearly to defend the two Koreas, with Red China losing 10-20 times as many men as the U.S., and 50 years later, neither country is appreciated (or liked) by their respective protege. Wars, indeed, are silly and futile, especially when you die for others.

              The book details the bloody battles around Wonju in early 1951. While the major phases of the Korean War had ended by Christmas 1950, the Chinese, under the leadership of the psychotic general Peng Te-hwai (Peng Dehuai), only began to launch their massive human wave attacks in 1951, pretty much all of which ended in failures and cost the Chinese half a million lives but also inflicted heavy losses on U.S./UN forces. Wonju is a prominent example of the insanity of war, especially at an individual level. The accounts here are a little too lengthy and confusing at times, but Coleman makes an attempt to provide a comprehensive story. The bravery of the young American soldiers fighting for a people unappreciative of their actions (even the Rhee gov't resented American intervention, despite the fact it came very close to being swallowed by their North brothers who had no love for them) comes out alive in the pages, but you can also feel for the peasant "volunteer" soldiers of Red China who died like ants rushing into a fire, so their comrades behind could march on.

              A worthy read for everyone interested in military history... and the history of human suffering.

                Tom Atlee's work illustrates the positive impact citizen deliberative councils can have where divisive public issues stall as intractable conflict.

                Chapter 3 -- Wholeness, Interconnectedness, and Co-creativity -- provides the Rosetta for understanding "co-intelligence" and the qualitative change in conversation when we embrace wholeness, interconnectedness, and co-creativity.

                Want to change the quality of the conversation? Read this book now.

                5 out of 5 stars Utterly Sensational--Basic Book for Humanity.......2003-12-01

                I see so many things starting to come together around the world and through books. The Internet has opened the door for a cross-fertilization of knowledge and emotion and concern across all boundaries such as the world has never seen before, and it has made possible a new form of structured collective intelligence such as H.G. Wells (World Brain), Howard Bloom (Global Brain), Pierre Levy (Collective Intelligence), Willis Harman (Global MindChange), and I (New Craft of Intelligence--Personal, Public, & Political), could never have imagined.

                This book is better than all of ours, for the simple reason that it speaks directly to the possibilities of deliberative democracy through citizen study circles and wisdom councils.

                The book is also helpful as a pointer to a number of web sites, all of them very immature at this point, but also emergent in a most constructive way--web sites focused on public issues, public agendas, new forms of democratic organization, and so on.

                Still lacking--and I plan to encourage special organizations such as the Center for American Progress to implement something like this--is a central hub where a citizen can go, type in their zip code, and immediately be in touch with the following (as illustrated on page 133 of New Craft):

                1) a weekly report on the state of any issue (disease, water, security, whatever);

                2) distance learning on that issue;

                3) an expert forum on that issue;

                4) a virtual library on that issue including links to the deep web substance on that issue, not just to home pages of sponsoring organizations;

                5) a global calendar of all events scheduled on that issue, including legislation and conferences or hearings;

                6) a rolodex or who's who at every level for that issue;

                7) a virtual budget showing what is being spent on that issue at every level; and

                8) an active map showing the status of that issue in time and space terms, with links to people, documents, etcetera.

                I cannot say enough good things about this book. If the authors cited above have been coming at the same challenge from a "top down" perspective, then Tom Atlee, the author of this book, gets credit for defining a "bottom up" approach that is sensible and implementable. This book focuses on what comes next, after everyone gets tired of just "meeting up" or "just blogging." This book is about collective intelligence for the common good, and it is a very fine book.

                5 out of 5 stars A thoughtful and philosophical work.......2003-05-16

                Tom Atlee's The Tao Of Democracy: Using Co-Intelligence To Create A World That Works For All offers the reader a positive viewpoint on and for creating a democracy founded upon wisdom, citizen participation, a culture of dialogue, and in an harmonious balance that encourages the best in people. A thoughtful and philosophical work written specifically to stave off the impending self-destructive side of current civilization, The Tao Of Democracy is recommended reading for students of Political Science and Philosophy.

                  Book Description

                  The North American Breeding Survey comprises a network of regularly censussed, road-based survey routes and constitutes the most comprehensive set of data on the relative abundance and population trends of these birds during the summer months. In this book, Jeff and Amy Price and Sam Droege have used these data to create detailed, computer-generated maps showing the relative abundance of 449 species that summer in the contiguous United States and southern Canada. Tabular information on distribution hotspots for these, and an additional 50 species too local in occurrence to map effectively, are also presented. The maps provide a baseline for future and more regionally based studies. Supporting chapters provide details on the survey methodology, the mapping procedures used, and some current concerns in North American bird conservation. The maps provide an unprecedented level of information, and far surpass the general picture given by distribution maps in field guides. For the first time, detailed occurrence and relative abundance of each species is provided. This is of great use to birders seeking to locate species of bird new to them, but also to everyone with an interest in and concern for, the health of North American bird populations. Ecologists, land managers, conservation agencies, environmental consultants, and land use planners will all benefit from this book.
