5 out of 5 stars Fun book to be appreciated by all........1999-01-01

I supplied the issues of Life Magazine to Dover that was used to produce this book. Carol did a fine job of selecting the illustrations used in this clip art book. They depict the age of the 20's and 30's nicely. I was pleased with the results.

Grimmy's humor works both for the young and old. At times it is similar to Far Side and at other times it is like Calvin & Hobbes. As new dog owners, we appreciate the funny way Peters describes the behavior of dogs in a hilarious way.

      Synopsis

From The Godfather to Get Carter, big screen tales of organized crime have produced many of cinema's greatest films and most memorable moments. The Rough Guide to Gangster Movies gives you the lowdown on all aspects of the genre - from the 'Chicago' of James Cagney and the Los Angeles of Michael Mann to the cinema underworlds of London, Paris and Hong Kong. This guide collects the guns, the cars, the molls and the classic plots, with directors and actors such as Edward G Robinson, Al Pacino, Chow Yun Fat, Robert DeNiro and Ray Winstone. The Rough Guide to Gangster Movies is an offer you can't refuse.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good (if imperfect) introductory reference book.......2007-01-22

I like a good crime movie. I also like reading about good crime movies, so getting The Rough Guide to Gangster Movies was an easy choice. And for the most part, after reading it, I found it to be a good choice too.

Like the other Rough movie guides, this book is divided in several sections. We get a brief history of the genre, a "canon" of fifty movies that are - in the author Lloyd Hughes opinion - essentially gangster film viewing, a look at the key people and trademarks at the genre and a world tour of gangster films in other countries.

For the most part, the Guide is a fun read, giving the readers some new insights into films they've seen and some ideas of new directions to explore. On the other hand, the Guide has its flaws: there are occasional typos and, more seriously, incorrect descriptions. In addition, at times, Hughes is sometimes a little too casual in his writing, using slang and abbreviations that may not be clear to many readers.

Even with these issues, it still rates four stars. It may not be a perfect book, but it will give people unfamiliar with the genre a good first look at gangster/crime movies; for those more experienced with these films, it will give the readers a little bit more to chew on.

3 out of 5 stars Use it as a guide, ignore the commentary.......2006-06-24

The Gangster Rough Guide is great if you are looking for a certain gangster film, or just browsing. As for the reviews, skip them. Is there a ganster movie that Lloyd Hughes actually liked? It falls into the nitpicking category- yes, some of these films weren't exactly screen gems, but the level of negativity is simply off-putting. Worth a read, but you should decide for yourself about whether the movies are actually good.

                      Book Description

Everyday capable, hardworking, committed employees suffer emotional abuse at their workplace. Some flee from jobs they love, forced out by mean-spirited co-workers, subordinates or superiors -- often with the tacit approval of higher management.

The authors, Dr. Noa Davenport, Ruth Distler Schwartz, and Gail Pursell Elliott have written a book for every employee and manager in America. The book deals with what has become a household word in Europe: Mobbing.

Mobbing is a "ganging up" by several individuals, to force someone out of the workplace through rumor, innuendo, intimidation, discrediting, and particularly, humiliation. Mobbing is a serious form of nonsexual, nonracial harassment. It has been legally described as status-blind harassment.

Mobbing affects the mental and physical health of victims. It extracts staggering costs from victims, their families, and from organizations.

With this new book, Mobbing: Emotional Abuse in the American Workplace, there is a name for the problem and help for the victims. The book helps readers to understand what mobbing is, why it occurs, how it affects a victim and organizations, and what people can so. The authors have interviewed victims from across the U.S. and the book contains many quotes that poignantly illustrate the gravity of the mobbing experience. An overview of the literature and research is provided as well as many practical strategies to help the victims, managers, healthcare and legal professionals. Original drawings by Sabra Vidali express the depth of the experience and enhance the authors' work.

                      5 out of 5 stars I think I was mobbed once, but I know I was bullied 3 times........2007-06-17

I am so glad I bought this book, I could relate to so many stories told in it. I read the whole book in just one day. It has useful information.

Unfortunatley , companies don't (yet) do anything about mobbing. I don't know how much longer I'll have to suffer. I just feel hurt everyday and I cry everyday.

I quit my 2nd job with just 1 days notice! because I couldn't take it anymore.

I left my 2nd job only after 6 months of working there, because I was bullied (and probably mobbed), it affected me so badly that I didn't want to go to work ever again. I stayed home for about 8 months and then my family started asking me to seek work - so that I will have some source of income. I felt so disoriented that it took me about 6 months to become my original self again.

As usual, no one at work cared, the HR lady called me on the phone, I didn't tell her anything about why I left. (Now I feel that I should have).

Now I'm in my 3rd job and there's an even bigger bully there. I just feel like leaving my 3rd job also.

The bully expresses great anger for no reason at all , and yells at me, he actually shows his animal behavior to everyone in the office (not just me), but unfortunately, I am supposed to work very closely with him.

I am in the same room as he is. This is making things worse for me.

I asked my manager to move me out, but the manager wants us to stay together for the sake of synergy!

And, here I am getting disoriented every day, pretty soon I'll become dysfunctional.

No one else will hire me because now I have an employment gap.

                      I don't know what to do :...(

4 out of 5 stars To name it is to know.......2006-07-14

I certainly commend the authors for giving a name and a face to repugnant behavior. It may go a long way toward doing something constructive about the destructive behaviors that heretofore go on in organizations. That's the reason why I read this book. I was interested, and did find, examples of commendable companies that drew the line and declared that destructive behavior is not tolerated. However, I'm not really that much more armed to fix a company's "sick environment" as a result of this book, which is the reason why I gave it 4 out of 5 stars. For one thing, the book is predominately focused on the victim. When it does talk about personnel policies, it is a little cursory. I would love to read an in-depth book or chapter on how to document the covert sabotaging behaviors -- those that are cited these days as the ways in which females bully. An organization really can't take action without documentation lest it run the risk of brandishing its own form of bullying. The book does point out the risks of mediating, because it can escalate the offenders' onslaughts. If offending people are resistant and behaviorally comfortable in their aggressions, they are not going to accept the lessons of training. Combine resistance with entrenched bad behavior, elusive documentation and, God forbid, political power of the offender arising from marketplace influences and you have a very complex and difficult problem to tackle. Unfortunately, I think the book glosses over that.

5 out of 5 stars "Mobbing:" A book that could save your life!.......2005-07-28

I stumbled across the term "mobbing," and then the book on amazon, late one night. I ordered the book after I read the description. "Mobbing" -- a group activity at work in which one person is singled out to be eliminated -- was a new term to me. But the idea of mobbing was not new. I was mobbed four years ago and, as do so many mobbees, finally left my job because of the excruciating mental and emotional suffering I endured. The women who mobbed me subsequently have mobbed two other people -- who both left with no job on the horizon -- and doubtlessly will continue to mob whoever holds this particular position that reports to her. This book helped me understand the behavior, how it occurs, how it builds up, and, most of all, that it happens to millions of other people every day. I realized that what happened was not my fault, and now I feel more confident as a professional than I have for the past four years since the mobbing. Please understand that I am not a fan of self-help books -- I'm a pretty no-nonsense type and think that some of these books are frivolous folderol.
But not "Mobbing." I even emailed the authors, who took the time to personally answer me.
This is a fantastic book. If you're being mobbed now, it will help you cope. If you have been mobbed, it will help you recover.
Once more, thanks to the authors for bringing this ugly facet of the working world to light.

5 out of 5 stars seek help and leave the environment.......2005-03-21

I'm currently dealing with the affects of this type of cowardly behavior, and I would like to send a message to anyone who has found themselves here at this web page:

If you "feel" like this is happening to you, if you "think" this may be happening to you, if you are waking up in the middle of the night, by intrusive thoughts and worries surrounding your work situation, and wondering what is wrong with yourself, then trust your instincts. Leave the environment and seek help. Please do it for the good of yourself, your health, and your loved ones.

This has been one of the most crushing, defeating experiences of my life. I hope that I can at least help keep someone from making the same mistakes in not trusting in their own perceptions.

Don't worry about revenge via lawsuits, or fighting back, or personal pride. Be concerned about your own mental and emotional well being. Surround yourself with people who give a damn about you. Seek resources such as this book in order to understand your situation, and try your best to start dusting yourself off.

These types of environments are severely ill and fronted by phonies. They are the most ignorant, the most scared and would be the first ones to crumble under the same circumstances you have found yourself. There is no honor or valour where you are at. Let them be. Rise above it, and out of it...

                      5 out of 5 stars There's A Name For It!.......2004-06-03

Finally, the USA has a name for a practice that has been identified and is illegal in many other countries. This is an excellent book, short on psychobabble and long on research, case studies, and support for targets of mobbing. The good news is, we're not alone. The bad news is, there's little legal recourse in the USA. The only solution? Find another job (and work to make mobbing illegal).

My own supervisor is afraid of the ringleaders of mobbing (whom he supervises)in my facility. The bullies at my workplace have been ferociously successful thanks to management fear and inaction. I will give my supervisor my copy of this book once I find another position.

                      Book Description

"This is a story of two battles, a battle to keep out 'the world' and a battle to join it."

She inhabits a place of chaos, cacophony, and dancing light--where physical contact is painful and sights and sounds have no meaning. Although labeled, at times, deaf, retarded, or disturbed, Donna Williams is autistic--afflicted by a baffling condition of heightened sensory perception that imprisons the sufferer in a private, almost hallucinatory universe of patterns and colors. Nobody Nowhere is Donna's story in her own words--a haunting, courageous memoir of the titanic struggles she has endured in her quest to merge "my world" with "the world."

5 out of 5 stars Autistic Girl Reviewing an Autistic Book.......2007-06-09

If I could describe this book in one word it would be "safe." Donna's world winsomely twinkles, it's no wonder she--and all autistics--find the "real" world terrifying. She describes in childlike trust and a type of naive bluntness her inability to connect with others. Her bluntness is not synonymous with bravado, and that becomes quite clear as she tells of her harrowing childhood. This book is autistic, and beautifully so.

The terror and climax of the book fades in and out, just as she does. In one clip of prose she is talking about her often saddening childhood and in another, fantasms and wisps, or the feel of fingers tapping out a rythym. Five stars and a standing ovation for her dreamy bravery and fighting forthrightness. Anyone who works with an autistic, is an autistic or loves an autistic or even knows an autistic should read this book.

The most revelatory things about her state of mind are her claimed psychic abilities (seeing the future in dreams), an amplified sense of personal space (feeling claustrophic when people came near her or touched her), and a lack of understanding of the purpose of commas and periods in writing (just putting them in at random intervals).
She covers not wanting to be seen as a freak, but acknowledges no motive for human interaction beyond that. She mustn't have been acting dissociative ALL the time, but the book only covers dissociative feelings and as such seems to show an incomplete picture. It's more of an "outsider staring into space" story than an "outsider looking in" story. I was hoping for the latter so maybe I just wasn't attuned to the point of the book.

                      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing.......2006-12-28

Written by an autistic, "Nobody Nowhere" is like stepping through the usually-closed-doors of an autistic mind. I am a special needs teacher, and currently work with autistic students. I read this book in one of my first few days, and the insight gained has allowed me to be successful in "getting through" to them.

Not only does she tell her story, but Donna Williams gives examples and explanations for her "autistic behavior": things like hand-flapping, noises, 'stimming', lights, and what each of these behaviors meant or did for her.

I recommend this book to anyone who has an autistic child, friend, student, family member, etc., or just anyone who is interested in finding out more about Autism. Unlike other books out there which speak of Autism in more of a scientific manner, this book is straight-forward, yet conversational in voice. Her following book, "Somebody, Somewhere" is captivating as well.

3 out of 5 stars One tough story more than an insight into autism.......2006-03-05

Well, if you want to get more of an idea of autism, where better than from the autobiography of an autistic woman?

This was partly why I started reading this book, having contact with some kids with autism, and also being aware that it's not an `either/or' dichotomy: all of us are somewhere on a long continuum. However along the way there was so much wild trauma going on with Williams' abusive family and multiple personalities it became very difficult to distinguish what in her life was a result of her autism and what was a refection of circumstances or other complicating psychological conditions. I will be curious to see if there are any Amazon reviews written by autistics and how they reacted. I wouldn't be surprised if, while they are glad to see awareness raised, many would be dismayed to think Donna came to represent a popular image of what autistic people are like (cf. the deaf community dealing with Peter Goldsworthy's Wish).

As a foil, I was quite impressed by Mark Haddon's 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time', both as an insight into the world of a lead character who is autistic and as a decent fictional story in it's own right. Nobody Nowhere is trying to do something entirely different, although it also has a narrator who's not entirely self-aware. I also note that at least one autistic guy gave enthusiastic praise that one of us `neuro-normals' had got it so right. Still, Haddon's lead character, while having a family with its own difficulties, has nothing on Donna's nightmare.

I suppose the really tricky part for me in this review is that after a while I really got to a point of disliking Donna. A dangerous thing to say: "A-ha - he doesn't like an autistic girl - he must be a bigot." Well, I hope not, and on further reflection I suspect not. Indeed, it's more bigoted to say, "That person is autistic, I must, therefore, like them." Like that nasty self-deceptive patronising racism that says something like, "I just love Mexicans - they're so cute. I love their funny hats and have a couple of CDs of that wonderful guitar music." Donna, like a lot of us, has her problems, many of which are not her own fault. However, we do get shaped by our circumstances, and not always in positive ways - not always in ways that make us good company. So much of Donna's self analysis I found pretty dubious: hey, I don't always understand why I act the way I do - I'm pretty sure that neither does Donna. Sure it's interesting, indeed, primary, to hear her perspective (and you really sympathise with her trying to make sense, to find some explanation for her personal history) - but I found myself often unconvinced.

Particularly hard going were the ubiquitous contradictory actions along the lines of, "I really liked this guy, he was so considerate and I wanted desperately to be with him - so I abused him and forced him to leave." Moreover there is a real contempt for, well, most other people. They can make all sorts of efforts to reach out to Donna, to allow for her, while she treats them horribly, but somehow they are always seen to be at fault:

"I found that people were usually blinded by their own insecurities or egotism or selfishness. People seemed so ignorant in their self-assured black and white conception of `normality'. Every so often, however, someone would wonder whether others had something to learn from me in trying to understand my differentness. Some people could sense the courage it took to teach myself so many things like the music I wrote with such depth and passion."

But if you're looking for blindness stemming from insecurities, egotism or selfishness, strewth, Donna is there for you. Even in this excerpt she unabashedly talks of the depth and passion of her music, elsewhere she's clearly convinced of her intellectual superiority to just about anyone: say, for example, any university lecturer who doesn't recognise her genius.

So, sorry, somewhere around the above quote, about three-quarters of the way through the book I thought to myself: I don't think I'm learning anything much about autism here, and I really don't like hanging around with this confused, arrogant and often unpleasant woman. I bailed.

                                Book Description

On June 18, 1812, the United States declared war on Great Britain--the most powerful nation in the world. Britain was in the midst of a long and perilous struggle with Napoleon's France, convincing President Thomas Jefferson that taking Canada would be "a mere matter of marching."

Jefferson was terribly wrong. In this book Ron Dale traces the course of this gruelling two-year conflict, bringing to life people and engagements that have become legendary in Canada: General Brock's stand at Queenston Heights, Tecumseh's death at Moraviantown, Laura Secord's epic trek through the woods. He also recovers some equally important, but more obscure results of the conflict, including how the Bank of Nova Scotia was created with privateering prizes from the war.

Illustrated throughout with full-colour paintings and modern photography, The Invasion of Canada is a readable, appealing guide to a war that both sides won.

The Invasion Of Canada: Battles Of The War Of 1812 by historian Ronald J. Dale (Superintendent of Niagara National Historic Sites) ably recounts the United States' invasion of Canada during the war of 1812, when Thomas Jefferson declared that annexing Canada would be "a mere matter of marching." Yet fierce battles would make him regret those words. The Invasion Of Canada offers the reader a vividly recounted, event-by-event survey of this relatively neglected aspect of American/Canadian history, as well as the men who became Canadian legends. Full-color photographs enhance this superbly written, highly recommended historical account.

Author Jim Hightower is not, as the title of his recent book about the George W. Bush administration indicates, a fan of equivocation. "The Bushites are--let me put this politely as I can--NUTS!" he writes, "They're insane. They're zealots totally dedicated to implementing their plutocratic, autocratic, militaristic, and imperialistic vision of America." The chapters in Hightower's book are prefaced by a series of reasons Bush fans may give for supporting the President followed by blistering and often highly entertaining refutations of those reasons. However, Hightower phrases the pro-Bush reasons to sound as boneheaded as possible, thus giving himself an easier time shooting them down. Meanwhile his down-home humor and polemical wackiness can be tiresome, occasionally getting in the way of efforts to clearly make a point. But don't be fooled by the wackiness: Hightower has done his homework and presents disturbing evidence of the dangers of Bush policy, particularly in the areas of food safety, personal privacy, and the environment. Unlike many on the left, he largely avoids the war in Iraq and the reasons given by the Bush administration for fighting it but that focus on domestic life helps Hightower avoid the pitfall of attacking everything Bush has ever done and being left to spend only a limited amount of time on each. Let's Stop Beating Around the Bush was published in July of 2004 just as the presidential election was heating up and it is very much a book of the moment, featuring references to the need to win the election and attempting to give those who oppose Bush some talking points for when they talk to those who support him. Neither those talking points nor this book are likely to change any minds but Jim Hightower's humor and energy provide are welcome in an election season. --John Moe

                                    Book Description

America in 2004 is color coded—and itÂ's not just a matter of red, white, and blue. The terror alert bounces from yellow to orange. The economy offers up a hundred shades of red ink. The environment is turning brown. National security is cloaked in gray shadows. And Jim Hightower covers it all with uncommon insight, political fearlessness, and laugh-out-loud humor.

AmericaÂ's #1 populist gives us LetÂ's Stop Beating Around the Bush—a hard- hitting, fact-filled review of the real state of the union that you wonÂ't get from the establishment media. With his daily radio commentaries and award-winning monthly newsletter, no one has chronicled the madness of King George the W, the wimpiness of corporate Democrats, and the aggressive avarice of Wall Street with the thoroughness and tenacity of Hightower. Now he brings that investigative punch into this wild and woolly book of fiery essays.

With his satirical “Six Perfectly Good Reasons to Re-elect George W. Bush;” his mix of damning indictments and uplifting stories; and side bars, cartoons, games, and puzzles, Hightower has done the impossible: He has created a subversive read that makes politics fun again.

Enjoying the lifting of the veil from an extremeley dangerous individual. The material is all in the public domain but this places it between two covers. The subject should probably be secured in a locked ward at St. Elizabeth's Hospital.

There are no perfect sides to take in politics. We can only fulfill our obligation to this country and our fellow countrymen by being inquisitive, willing to listen, and being able to make up our own minds without the need to lambaste others who do not share our 'family values' or belief in the current 'plutocracy'.
Before we get our panties in a twist over a dissenting voice perhaps we should do some research on the author, his experience, his justifications, and make an intelligent, correctly spelled retort, or commendation. Jeez, as far as I know, it's still a free country, unless the 'hatred' perceived by the rabid right shuts down dissent altogether.

Especially after this tragic election in which Bush and GOP won, as a true conservative, I can't blame Jim Hightower for poking fun at the current neo-cons who have given us good conservatives a bad rap. If you're a non-conservative, you shouldn't have trouble getting a few laughs from it. For you conservatives out there who are tired of the current neocons taking you for granted by exploiting the macho weakness, read this book and learn to stop beating around the bushes but instead sledgehammer the neocons and get the last laugh. And I say the same to liberals and moderates who are sick and tired of being called weak !

5 out of 5 stars Hightower in rare form!!.......2004-12-13

Hightower pulls no punches in this witty and insightful look at GW and his policies. The cartoons are hilarious. If you're already a fan of Hightower's weekly coloums then this will be right up your alley. If you're not a fan then this book will easily make you one.

This book was...interesting. I would have liked some proof of some of the information, while on subjects like food and the environment, for all our sakes I can only hope he was exaggerating.
The best things in this book are the tongue-in-cheek intros, outlandish though they are.
Overall, this book was pretty good. Not the best read if you're a Republican seeing if you should swing your vote, but it's good for Democrats to get a laugh.
