            Book Description

This book is aims to be a comprehensive source on the physics and engineering of magneto-resistive heads. Most of the material is presented in a nonmathematical manner to make it more digestible for researchers, students, developers, and engineers.

In addition to revising and updating material available in the first edition, Mallinson has added nine new chapters dealing with various aspects concerning spin valves, the electron spin tunneling effect, the electrostatic discharge effects, read amplifiers, and signal-to-noise ratios, making this a completely up-to-date reference.

The previous edition of Magneto-Resistive Heads was the first volume in the new Academic Press series in Electromagnetism edited by Professor Isaak Mayergoyz, who is a well-recognized expert in the field.

If any good teachers in this field are available around you, this can help you learn from the teachers very well. But if not, it might take you much time to realize what MRH is, how it works, and what the background is, even if you are familier with basic science (university level). More examples of practically being (having been) used structure, better you understand.

Johnny Rocks! Giovanni Furbo was born to rock. A child prodigy, his adventures on the road with his musical uncle prepared him for life on the road as a rock star. A renegade nun tutored the young Johnny to become a legend in his own right, showing him the basics for the music that would come to make him known across the globe. Every bit the star, Johnny at one point flipped and had to retire from performing. In his retirement he became the object of great curiosity to the world, most especially a band of gangsters who sought to make him interrupt his spiritual life with the offer of great riches, which they gained by a wild scheme that involved channeling spirits. Will Johnny throw his serenity away to gain back the glory of his rocking days? He must wrestle with his conscience and every person he knows in order to break loose and hit the road in a car he took from his master. We leave him, flying, flying down the road unresolved.

                  Book Description

'Meaning' in cinema is very complex, and the flood of theories that define it have, in certain ways, left cinematic meaning meaningless. Johannes Ehrat's analysis of meaning in cinema has convinced him that what is needed is greater philosophical reflection on the construction of meaning. In Cinema and Semiotic, he attempts to resurrect meaning by employing Charles S. Peirce's theories on semiotics to debate the major contemporary film theories that have diluted it.

Based on Peirce's Semiotic and Pragmatism, Ehrat offers a novel approach to cinematic meaning in three central areas: narrative enunciation, cinematic world appropriation, and cinematic perception. Attempting a comprehensive theory of cinema - instead of the regional 'middle-ground' theories that function only on certain 'common-sense' assumptions that borrow uncritically from psychophysiology - Ehrat further demonstrates how a semiotic approach grasps the nature of time, not in a psychological manner, but rather cognitively, and provides a new understanding of the particular filmic sign process that relates a sign to the existence or non-existence of objects. Never before has Peirce been so fruitfully employed for the comprehension of meaning in cinema.

                      Book Description

" Writing Training Materials that Work is a solid and practical resource to move our field to a more professional level of practice in which instructional decisions are based on research and valid models of how people learn"
--Ruth Clark, president, Clark Training and Consulting, past president, ISPI

"I can see how this book will be immediately useful to my students. In fact, I can see how it will be immediately useful to me. Thanks for putting it all together between two covers."
--Allison Rossett, professor, San Diego State University

The explosion of e-learning has attracted huge numbers of practitioners to the field of instructional design (ID), many with little or no actual ID training. And most current texts fail to cover the substantial recent developments in the field. Writing Training Materials that Work is different. In it, the authors identify, synthesize, and summarize the most current best practices in ID. They offer new ways of teaching declarative knowledge (facts, concepts, and principles) and well- to ill- structured procedural knowledge (problem solving). Their recommendations are based on those principles in the cognitive learning and instruction literature that are internally consistent, prescriptive, and have been empirically demonstrated to make a cost-effective difference. The authors' approach is easy to implement and consistently gets results because it focuses on teaching deep understanding and problem-solving, allowing learners to generalize and transfer learning to new situations without re-training. Whether youre an experienced instructional design practitioner who wants to expand your skills or a graduate student in an advanced instructional design course, Writing Training Materials T\that Work will prove to be a readable, usable, and indispensable guide!

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lives up to its title.......2004-08-09

Foshay and associates have succeeded in the task described in the subtitle of this work. This book has three parts: 1. Introduction to the Cognitive Approach; 2. How to Design Lessons using the Cognitive Approach; 3. Using the Cognitive Approach: The Research Issues.

The book itself is an excellent illustration of the techniques that it intends to teach, starting with how to organize and present information (chapter 4). Then individual chapters deal with teaching facts (5), teaching concepts (6), teaching principles and mental models (7), teaching well-structured problem solving (8), teaching ill-structured problem solving (9), and teaching troubleshooting (10). The early chapters lay down the principles underlying the cognitive point of view on how learning occurs (1) and how to design training using the cognitive model described (2). The final chapters get into research issues related to teaching both declarative knowledge (13) and procedural knowledge (14) -- a critical distinction in the teaching of technology (my own area of interest) and for other areas of practical learning. Declarative knowledge is knowledge about something; procedural knowledge is knowledge of how to do something.

                      Strongly recommended.

This work is perhaps the most complete and enjoyable children's book ever written about one of the nation's most fascinating and important figures, Abraham Lincoln. Russell Freedman covers Lincoln's life and career in a balanced treatment that is enhanced by period photographs and drawings. The book won the Newbery Medal, the Jefferson Cup Award and the Golden Kite Honor Book Award, and earned a citation as School Library Journal Best Book of the Year.

                      Book Description

A description of the boyhood, marriage, and young professional life of Abraham Lincoln includes his presidential years and also reflects on the latest scholarly thoughts about our Civil War president.

3 out of 5 stars great content poor construction.......2007-07-04

This is a great book for young readers however, be advised I had to order it twice because the pages were falling out of the first book. There is a problem with the glue used in the binding process. The second book arrived and the same problem occured. Because the book was required summer reading for my son who is going into 8th grade, I went to kinkos and spent another $10.00 to have it re-bound. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Deserving of the Newbery.......2007-04-19

This biography on Abraham Lincoln is balanced perfectly, a great blend of basic information and detailed facts, without ever becoming irrelevant or too deep. Photographs enhance this effect, including a page that shows the effects of age on Lincoln's face throughout his presidency, and historical artifacts like posters and handwriting samples. This is the perfect Lincoln primer for someone just starting research, or for a middle school student with an assignment.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating presentation on President Lincoln.......2007-01-10

I'm sure that there are plenty of biographies out there on President Lincoln, but I have not seen any that give us as good a kid-friendly view on him until this one. The photos add an unparalleled personality that draws in the reader, and they truly are beautiful. The book presents a great summary of Lincoln's life and-- most impressively-- even tackles some of the darker moments, as is approriate for the target elementary/middle school audience. It is informatve and an easy, educational read that should prove great for research.

4 out of 5 stars Great history book and great biography book.......2005-09-12

This medium-sized illustrated book on the life of Abraham Lincoln covers the private and public life of one of America's greatest presidents. The book gives good balance to the different stages of Lincoln's life; including his youth, childhood education, teenage years, early days as a country lawyer, entrance into local politics, his marriage, and finally his rise to the presidency and his death. The book does not concentrate on the Civil War, but instead gives a full picture of the man, including his personal traits such as love of storytelling, good humor, and ability to win over people given enough time. Overall, a great book for students in middle school or early high school.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Review of Lincoln a Photobiography.......2005-04-07

This book is all about Abraham Lincoln from living in the backwoods to the Presidency and the assassination. Before Lincoln became President he was a lawyer and a State and U.S. Congressman. He married Mary Ann Todd and they had four boys.He was a member of the Whig Party until 1856 when he switched to the Repuplican Party. He was elected President in 1860 and led the Union to victory over the Confederates in the Civil War.He was shot by John Wilkes Booth on April 14,1856. He was watching the play My American Cousin at Ford's theater. The next day he died in a boarding house across the street.I give this book five stars because it was an awesome book. I learned a lot about Lincoln and life in the 1800's. Russell Freedman packed the book with a bunch of interesting facts that kept me reading. It wasn't just about Lincoln. It was also about the Civil War and political issues. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about history, Presidents and likes to read biographies.

                            Book Description

Much has been written about the famous conflicts and battlegrounds of the East during the American Revolution. Perhaps less familiar, but equally important and exciting, was the war on the western frontier, where Ohio Valley settlers fought for the land they had claimed—and for their very lives.

George Rogers Clark stepped forward to organize the local militias into a united front that would defend the western frontier from Indian attacks. Clark was one of the few people who saw the importance of the West in the war effort as a whole, and he persuaded Virginia's government to lend support to his efforts. As a result, Clark was able to cross the Ohio, saving that part of the frontier from further raids.

Lowell Harrison captures the excitement of this vital part of American history while giving a complete view of George Rogers Clark's significant achievements.

This is a wonderful work; well written and well researched with superb insights into events of the American Revolution that are usually ignored or only given scant coverage. The only real weakness is the book's brevity which does not allow the full development of the author's ideas or enoough detail on important issues. The bibliographic essay is wonderful and provides an outstanding guide to the sources on this fascinating topic.

3 out of 5 stars General history of the American frontier during the Revolution........2006-06-09

Synopsis: This is designed to be a general review or introduction to the American Revolution in what is now Kentucky, Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. At that point in time, that was the American West. It features George Rogers Clark prominently.

My review: this is a decent history. Nothing great, nothing terrible. I would recommend along with it the historical fiction book "Long Knife" by James Alexander Thom and a good biography of Daniel Boone to get a better understanding of the warfare along the frontier. I would also recommend a book I also reviewed entitled "The Red Heart" by Thom for an impression of the war from the American Indian's point of view.

I give this book a "C" for being neither great nor awful. It was simply a history.

If you are not familiar with Clark's story, I urge you to read the short history on the National Parks Service's site from the George Rogers Clark National Historic Site in Vincenenes, Indiana - hopefully it will encourage you to read more. I personally find the story to be most amazing - Clark is one of the few outright heroes I have in my study of history.

I will leave you with a quote from Clark that was featured in the book: "Great things have been effected by a few men well conducted."

It was exactly what my history teacher called a "Mickey Mouse Book". This book (in my opinion) is a very good resource item for history if we're talking about with younger kids, but not with teenagers. The sentences are absurdly short and it doesn't really connect the story all that well. The information in it is great if you want to know about what George Rogers Clark and their relating people did during the entire American Revolutionary War, but as I have said before, the sentences are extremely choppy.

In 1964 a small group of African American men in Jonesboro, Louisiana, defied the nonviolence policy of the mainstream civil rights movement and formed an armed self-defense organization--the Deacons for Defense and Justice--to protect movement workers from vigilante and police violence. With their largest and most famous chapter at the center of a bloody campaign in the Ku Klux Klan stronghold of Bogalusa, Louisiana, the Deacons became a popular symbol of the growing frustration with Martin Luther King Jr.'s nonviolent strategy and a rallying point for a militant working-class movement in the South.

Lance Hill offers the first detailed history of the Deacons for Defense and Justice, who grew to several hundred members and twenty-one chapters in the Deep South and led some of the most successful local campaigns in the civil rights movement. In his analysis of this important yet long-overlooked organization, Hill challenges what he calls "the myth of nonviolence"--the idea that a united civil rights movement achieved its goals through nonviolent direct action led by middle-class and religious leaders. In contrast, Hill constructs a compelling historical narrative of a working-class armed self-defense movement that defied the entrenched nonviolent leadership and played a crucial role in compelling the federal government to neutralize the Klan and uphold civil rights and liberties.

excellent coverage of a little-known but very important part of the civil rights movement. if you're tired of the conventional view of the crm with everyone on their knees praying, this book is for you.

you have to speak the language of the wolf." - Henry Austin, Deacons for Defense

This is truly a lost history of the civil rights movement that author Lance Hill has found under the layers upon layers of mainstream narratives which conveniently dictate false truths that - when repeated enough - become larger than life.

Following the organized self-defense philosophy espoused by Robert F. Williams in Monroe, N.C., a small group of men in Jonesboro, Louisiana, founded an organization that had great influence in the civil rights movement of the mid-1960s. The success the Deacons had in defeating the KKK and other haters on the streets by standing up, moving forward and staring them down with guns loaded brought a new sense of empowerment in demanding that justice truly be served today.

Hill explains how he became aware of the Deacons and then began his quest to research the history. Initially founded to protect civil rights workers, the Deacons' influence in the Deep South grew with a regional organizing campaign in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, along with chapters being founded in several Northern cities.

The success and expansion of the program brought interest from the FBI, coverage by an oftentimes adverse media and linkage - oftenetimes quite temporary - with a number of revolutionary organizations.

But through the comparatively brief time the Deacons operated - about four years - Hill successfully argues that the organization forced the federal government to aggressively enforce the 1964 Civil Rights Act and was the bridge to the Black Power movement that emerged later in the decade.

The Deacons' legacy continues, as former members have strongly stated over the years that the group has never actually gone away. And, as Hill writes, "Finally, there is something inspiring in a story of people who stood up to injustice when everyone around them was afraid. That is a fable that will always serve us well."

The Deacons for Defense lives in the souls of those who do their part on a daily basis to bring real justice to this country.

5 out of 5 stars Deacons for Defense .......2006-07-23

An important corrective to the nonviolence theme that domninates most histories of the Civil Rights Movement. The Deacons were mostly home grown Black Veterans from working class neighborhoods in small southern towns like Bogalusa and Jonesboro Louisianna. When the Klan and Police beat on civil rights workers and local protestors the Deacons fought back. In July 1965 when a mob of whites attacked a group of civil rights, mostly children, marchers in Bogalusa a Deacon shot a Klan member sending him to hospital. This incident had a profound impact on the response to Black demands for equal rights in Lousianna. Finally, the White Establishment began to make changes that led to a better life for Louisianna's Blacks. Professor Hill's(History, Tulane Univesity) book is full of such incidents and proves that the Deaon's impact on the souhtern Civil Rights struggle must not be overlooked.

This book kept me up reading all night. I had in the past heard that their had been a group that pre dated The Black Panther Party, and were operating in the deep south. However there was not much information on this clandestine group. Well there is now. This is the book. My chest burst with pride as the tears fell down my cheeks. If you read nothing else this year please read this book if you want to know what our people were really doing during the "movement". The media had been lying to us about our role in our own history! This book is about us!

5 out of 5 stars Deacons for Defense: Armed Resistance and the Civil Rights M.......2004-07-24

This is an excellent book, a long awaited and much needed factual account of a group of courageous men whose activism had major impact on the movement. Hill has produced a wealth of documentation to prove the history he has brought to the fore.
This account does tribute to those brave and unsung (heretofore)
heroes who refused to further degrade themselves and thier communities by turning the other cheek! Must reading.
