Product Description
George Hagman looks anew at psychoanalytic ideas about art and beauty through the lens of current developmental psychology that recognizes the importance of attachment and affiliative motivational systems. In dialogue with theorists such as Freud, Ehrenzweig, Kris, Rank, Winnicott, Kohut, and many others, Hagman brings the psychoanalytic understanding of aesthetic experience into the 21st century. He amends and extends old concepts and offers a wealth of stimulating new ideas regarding the creative process, the ideal, beauty, ugliness, and perhaps his most original contributionthe sublime. Especially welcome is his grounding of aesthetic experience in intersubjectivity and health rather than individualism and pathology. His emphasis on form rather than the content of an individual's aesthetic experience is a stimulating new direction for psychoanalytic theory of art. With this work Hagman stands in the company of his predecessors with this deeply-learned,! sensitively conceived, and provocative general theory of human aesthetic experience. Ellen Dissanayake, author of Art and Intimacy: How the Arts Began and Homo Aestheticus: Where Art Comes From and Why.

Excellent Book.......2007-08-06
This is a great book for beginning photographers and even those that have progressed can still go back and learn something from this book. It covers everything from the camera, to lighting to how to shoot various subjects. Different photographers give their insights about how to shoot great pictures. If you are a beginning photographer then buy this book.
Excellent 2nd Edition........2007-05-01
Get this.
Anyone who wants to start photography as a hobby must have this book inside the essential list.
I had the first edition, and I got the second edition. I gave away my 1st edition to another photographer as a gift. He still brings it around with him.
The chapters are well structured. The explanations are easily understood. Despite being written for the "analogue" era, the techiniques and tips are still valid. The topics are still relevant to the digital enthusiasts.
Great sections on experiances by seasoned NatGeo's photographers. It's a thrill just reading them.
One might raise the issue of the lack of post processing techniques in a digital darkroom; but I say this is a "Field Guide", to be used on the field (which was what I got the book for).
I say again, get this by your side when you go to the field.
Great book.......2007-01-10
great book, detailize every single lighting technique that you should know about photographing, highly recommended
Great book by great authors!.......2006-12-20
Great book by highly-rated National Geographic photographers!
I like the way the book is written, simple and compact, but full of information. Different photographers also give their tips, gives you different perspectives on how you should take a photograph.
There is no details, however, like shutter speed, aperture, focal length on the photos in the book.
Learn to shoot like a pro with ease.......2006-11-03
The national Geogrphic series on photography is great. With great detail they explain how to take memorable shots that will have family and friend ewwing and awwing. This is a must by for a budding photo journalist.

Book Description
Nea had it all--a man, a truckload of cash, and a fresh start. Or she did until her boyfriend gunned her down. Now nothing will come between Nea and her revenge. Novelist Gary Phillips and artist Brett Weldele drop you into a brutal world of urban action in this new trade paperback.
Customer Reviews:
Hardcore, Gritty Blaxploitation.......2007-01-24
(3.5 stars) The whole blaxploitation genre is one I generally don't like, but like any genre, in the right hands, it can result in an entertaining tale.
By day, Gary Phillips is apparently (I'm not familiar with his work) a novelist in the vein of the influential Donald Goines, and judging by his crisp writing here -- a classic hardboiled, bullets-and-broads tale of double and triple-crossing, blaxploitation meter unabashedly set to full-throttle -- he's not only a master of the form, but one who clearly has a genuine love for it. (As opposed to, say, Quentin Tarantino's fetishistic obsession.) After a short story "prelude" introduces the main players and sets things up, Phillips jumps right into the action as his lead, Nea Garvin, is shot in the back by her boyfriend on the heels of a successful heist where she served as the inside woman, and is left for dead. What follows is a fast-paced tale of revenge that is highlighted by Nea's evolution from naive hoodrat to pistol-packin' mama, complemented by a colorful cast of supporting characters and an unexpectedly sentimental ending.
Brett Weldele's sketchy black-and-white artwork is an effective mix of the realistic and impressionistic, complementing the morally grey tone of the story very well. His dynamic page layouts and camera angles communicate the fast pace of the story while allowing it to breathe when necessary, and each of his characters are distinctive and emotive, both facially and in their body language.
I'm still not a fan of blaxploitation, but credit where credit's due. Shot Callerz isn't high art by any means, but if you enjoy hardcore, gritty crime stories like Ed Brubaker's Criminal -- or, god forbid, thought Wings of Anansi was any good -- you'll love what Phillips and Weldele have to offer.

Book Description
The Cinema of Robert Lepage is the first critical study of one of the most striking artists of Quebecois and Canadian independent filmmaking. The book examines Lepage's creative methods of filmmaking in their cultural and social context and argues that his work cannot be seen separately from his oeuvre as a multidisciplinary artist. Further, this study demonstrates that like Jean Cocteau, Mike Leigh, and Alain Resnais, Lepage is a multifaceted artist who works with a group of actors on very personal themes, building his films, such as Le Confessionnal and Possible Worlds, during months or years of a perpetual rehearsal process; thus it challenges the notions that Lepage should be considered only in the terms of Quebecois film tradition. The author explores such themes with Lepage in a new exclusive and detailed interview.

Book Description
It's not all in the delivery. Here's expert guidance on how to write a dynamic speech. Splashy slides, confident body language, and a lot of eye contact are fine and well. But if a speech is rambling, illogical, or just plain boring, the impact will be lost.
Now everyone can learn to give powerful, on-target speeches that capture an audience's attention and drive home a message. The key is not just in the delivery techniques, but in tapping into the power of language.
Prepared by an award-winning writer, this authoritative speech-writing guide covers every essential element of a great speech, including outlining and organizing, beginning with a bang, making use of action verbs and vivid nouns, and handling questions from the audience. Plus, the book includes excerpts from some of history's most memorable speeches--eloquent words to contemplate and emulate.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic- a great resource.......2006-01-27
Ultimately, what stays with an audience, is the content of your speech. Richard Dowis, a former journalist and retired senior vice president of Manning, Selvage, and Lee Public Relations provides information to help you effectively collect, organize and shape content into powerful speeches. He urges you to consider first the purpose of your speech, what you really want the audience to walk away with. Then, to fit your purpose into the format and time allotted. You must begin by researching your topic, clarifying your purpose, creating an outline and identifying a strong thesis, or unifying idea. When organizing your speech the most important consideration is that it must be logically organized. He identifies several organizational strategies you can use. For example, Chronological order, the "Big Bang" where a shocking thesis is presented up front, and Cause-and-effect which outlines the causes of a problem, describes its effect and suggests a solution. He also provides the following guidance on writing your speech:
1. Begin Well: Your opening should establish rapport with the audience, set the tone, reinforce your credibility and arouse interest in your subject. 5 categories of opening are: novelty, dramatic, question, humorous and reference/quote.
2. Watch Your Language: Avoid Jargon and overly complex language. Try instead for a simple elegance. Be yourself.
3. Use Proven Techniques: The Rule of Three: Organize related thoughts into groups of three to make them more memorable and dramatic. Anaphora: repeat words or phrases at the beginning of several sentences.
4. When using statistics: make them interesting and meaningful, express statistics in terms your audience can understand, and avoid using too many raw figures in a row.
5. Closing the Speech: use your closing to reinforce your point, or to reinforce the goal of the speech. Most closings fall into seven categories: Summary, Wrap-up, Direct appeal, Thesis, Reference, Inspirational, and Humorous/Anecdotal.
6. Editing: When editing consider content, organization, style, language and grammar.
The Lost Art of the Great Speech: How to Write One--How to Deliver It.......2005-09-09
I originally checked this out at the library and realized I needed it in my reference collection. It's well writen, informative and fun to read. The author walks you step by step through the process of writing a speech to giving it, along with useful tricks of the speech writers trade. I highly recommend it.
An Excellent Resource for Speakers.......2002-10-03
Richard Dowis spends no time lamenting this lost art. Instead he focuses his energy on its resurrection.
Dowis's background in journalism and public relations provided the foundation for his writing a remarkably readable book. His conversational style serves as a model for the language you would want to hear -- and use -- in a speech. Frequent headings and an especially legible font also contribute to the book's readability.
In _The Lost Art of the Great Speech_, Dowis addresses every conceivable aspect of this topic -- from deciding whether to accept a speaking engagement to "leveraging" a speech by converting it to one or more publishable articles. The book takes a holistic approach to speech writing. Chapters follow the process of speech preparation, including delivery as well as crafting. In addition, Dowis discusses topics such as how to write a speech to be delivered by someone else and how to introduce a speaker.
Each chapter includes pertinent excerpts from actual speeches, many taken from the business world, and also includes a full speech or a substantial excerpt of a speech by a well-known person. Many of these speeches have historical significance. Having asserted that "reading and listening to speeches is one of the keys to learning how to write and deliver them," Dowis supplies us with many examples to study.
Dowis devotes several chapters to rhetorical devices that can lift a speech from the respectable to the eloquent. To illustrate how rhetoric can immortalize a concept, he compares several versions of an idea that appeared in speeches by famous Americans.
In addition to a detailed index, _The Lost Art of the Great Speech_ includes two helpful appendices: An Editing Checklist for Speech Writers and Resources for Speakers and Speech Writers.
_The Lost Art of the Great Speech_ is a valuable resource for anyone who might have the opportunity to address a group of people. Although it does not include study questions or practice exercises, it would be an excellent book for a class of high school or college students as well as for adults who are studying independently.
This is a terrific book!.......2001-08-09
Although this book was written for business folk, it serves as a tremendous text for high school students. The suggestions are clear, the models exemplary, and the writing concise. Also, the texts of speeches that end nearly every chapter are well-chosen. AND there's a handy appendix listing resources for speakers and writers.
A Must Read.......2001-05-05
For those of you who don't like text book reads but need the information, this is the book for you. This book gives useful information and useful hints on speech writing and speech giving. It is the best of Speech Communication classes and everyday ideas for the beginner in public speaking and the expert speech writer.
Customer Reviews:
This book was a gift to my husband........2007-09-26
My husband, Dave Bender, enjoyed the book very much and has passed it along to friends who have the same interests.
Tales well told........2007-08-13
I loved this book - it was unpretentious, genuine, and informative. Truman Smith conveys realistically what it was like for him - and it's obvious by his writing style no one "ghosted" it for him.
What it was like to live the life of an Eighth Air Force Bomber Pilot.......2007-05-12
When I purchased this book I wasn't too sure that it would be interesting. This is without doubt one of the best World War II pilot books I have ever read and I have read hundreds of them. The B-17 copilot/author is clearly a very intelligent, gifted writer who must have kept a detailled journal or the equivalent. In a most engaging way, he tells you about his day to day life, as much at the air base or on leave in London chasing girls or enjoying his friends as in the air. But he vividly and comprehensively recreates the life of his ten man crew and his flying job as well as the rest of his fighting the war but living in England on the ground experience. Picking this book up every evening at bed time brings me back into his at the war life. Really enjoyable. Fascinating. I highly reccommend this important piece of USAF world war II history. Don't worry about the title.
Excellent book by a B-17 pilot.......2006-11-26
As the son of a B-17 pilot, I have read several books on the subject. This is a very good one (another is "Serenade to the Big Bird"). I learned more about the author's experiences during his non-flying time, how he felt sure early on that he'd never survive the war, how he grew confident in his flying skills, and married a young German girl after the war (they are still married! I wrote him a letter thanking him for writing the book and she called me to thank me.)
It would make a good movie.
He captures it all........2002-09-25
One of the few things more exciting than reading Truman's book is meeting Truman himself. Yes there is a Ponca City and yes he does live there. As a veteran of our "conflict" in Viet Nam I had experienced many of the same emotions found in the book. I especially appreciated his discussions on the guilt of surving and of not doing enough. If you get a chance read the book, you won't be sorry. If you have been to war or thought about war you owe it to yourself to read this book. Thanks Mike, for introducing me to Truman, and thanks Truman, for writing the book.
Book Description
Babur, the founder of the Mughul dynasty, was of Turco-Mongol origin - he was descended from Timur-i-Lenk [Tamerlane] on his father's side and Genghiz Khan on his mother's. His first raid into India in 1516 was followed by several others, and by the time of his death in 1530 Babur's troops had reached Bengal on the far side of the sub-continent. With eight fine full page colour plates by Angus McBride, and many other illustrations, this text by David Nicolle examines the organisation, tactics and uniforms of Mughul armies from Babur's time onwards.
Customer Reviews:
A Brilliant source of Information.......2005-06-23
This is a brilliant source of information and of pictures as my field is includes this information. It is well detailed, the army deployment and pictures are excellent and overall it is a very good book. Though it is not Babaru-Nama, it is a good source of information. A 5/5 for this book.
Mughul India- David Nicolle and Angus Mc Bride.......2000-05-21
I found this book very interesting and a good introduction to the type of warfare being waged for the control of the Indian Subcontinent in the period under review. The warfare waged by the Mughul Emperors was a continuation of the traditions of their ancestors from the Mongol steppes. Of course it shows the evolution from the age of Babur the founder of the Mughul Dynasty to the later emperors. The role of the cavalry is highlighted as well as the infantry and artillery. Of particular interest is the utilization of elephants in warfare which is decribed in great detail. I also liked the drawings which I believe are among the most beautiful in any of the Osprey series. These are often based on beautiful Mughul and Persian miniatures found in museums and collections around the world. There are also some photos of Mughul armour, fortresses and other areas of interest. My favourite is a photo of an elephant armour, perhaps the only one of its kind, in the tower of London. It follows Dr Nicolle,s high standard of historical analysis.

Book Description
Immigrants in America are at the heart of what makes this country the most prosperous and visionary in the world. Writing from his own heartfelt perspective as an immigrant, Jorge Ramos, one of the world's most popular and well-respected Spanish-language television news broadcasters, listens to and explores stories of dozens of immigrants who decided to change their lives and risk everything -- families, jobs, history, and their own culture -- in order to pursue a better, freer, and opportunity-filled future in the United States. In his famously clear voice, Jorge Ramos brings to life the tales of individuals from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic, among other countries, and explains why they first immigrated, what their dreams are, how they deal with American racism, and what they believe their future in America will hold for them and their children.
From the Vieques controversy to the "Spanglish" phenomenon to the explosion of Latino creativity in the arts, Ramos shows that there is a new face in America -- one whose colors and countries of origin are as diverse as the country it has adopted as home.
Customer Reviews:
Racism examined by a politically correct racist.......2007-09-17
This book is incredibly racist, against white Americans. Ramos goes out of his way to show every negative stereotype of white Americans that he can find.
I had to read it for a Master's level class on culture and the entire class was revolted by what we read. The only saving grace (from an academic stand point) is that he admits to his bias in the introduction. Indeed, he wears his bias like a badge of honor. The thing that keeps him from being attacked for his views is that he is a member of an ethnic minority. No way a white male could get away with printing views this clearly biased.
Highly recommend you pass on this book.
One sided and shallow.......2007-09-11
In The Other Face of America, Jorge Ramos, explores the important issue of Latino immigration. Using oral histories he shows the human side of immigrants attempting to provide for their family and improve their quality of life. He counters the argument that illegal immigrants are here for welfare benefits and demonstrates that they contribute more than they take away. These are important issues but unfortunately Ramos is not up to the task of addressing it proffessionally
While immigration is a complex issue, Ramos sees a world that is Brown and White with no grey areas. He sees his "world as mixed brown and inclusive" and "their world as white, exclusive and dominant."(xiv) He states that anti-Hispanic racism pervades the daily life of all Americans. (xxxi) Instead of showing a variety of causes and viewpoints, all is reduced to xenophobia and racism. He doesn't even bother to distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants. Apparently White Americans treat both the same. Journalists are held to similar standards as historians. That is, thoroughness of research, objectivity, logic and unbiased writing. Even though he is a respected journalist he feels "compelled to voice his opinion". (xix) Even with that caveat readers still assume he is still maintaining high journalist standards. He even claims to not be biased (xx) and then throws his bias around liberally. "During the height of Irish and Italian immigration never was there an anti-immigrant sentiment so noticeable and so great as in 1994."(48) A quick trip to the library would have Revealed "No Irish need apply" signs and riots all over the country. I dont remember that in 1994. Is this bias or just bad research? Neither should be tolerated from a reporter.
This is an important issue and what is needed is good solid reporting not one sided opinion. Ramos seems too lazy to do the research. He simply threw together a number of essays written over the years and calls it a book. Thus we hear no less than six times why the birth rate of Latino families is greater than American families. He can not even be bothered to edit his work so he ends up repeating himself. It is unfortunate that this respected reporter has not taken the time and effort to explore, analyze, research, and evaluate the immigration issue.
Unbalanced.......2007-06-12
A very biased book (at least he admits it). What is good about it? The depiction of life as an illegal immigrant and how immigrants help the American economy. What is flawed? Much more than I am willing to write here. The statistics he uses--conveniently picks and chooses to support his argument. His statistics don't paint the full picture. He doesn't distinguish between legal and illegal immigration. He seems to find no problem with illegal immigration--that's what really bothers people. He believes that it's Mexicans that Americans dislike. It's not Mexicans, it's illegals! All he does seem to do is whine about what is not right. He states there is no way to fix it and suggests that since it can't be fixed, to open our borders fully. There is no advocation about increasing the number of work permits or any cracking down on people who hire the illegals. Not much thought went into providing solutions. Anyone can criticize, but the good ones come up with solutions.
Good book, but at this point a little dated.......2007-04-24
I think overall Ramos does an excellent job in this book. He candidly and honestly portrays the variety of experiences of Hispanic Immigrants. He has a great appreciation of the wide variety of cultures that fall under the title of Hispanic, as well as the particular challenges faced by each of them in America. In all honesty I could have done without his ode to Spanglish, as well as one or two other chapters, but overall I think this is a worthwhile read. The only other thing, at it may have already happened is that it needs to be updated!
The immigrant experience.......2002-08-12
Ramos does a superb job of showing how the Latino experience is the American experience: hard-working folks moving from their home country to the USA to make a better future for their families, and in the process, to make a better USA. Ramos also proposes insightful solutions to the social and institutional challenges associated with this wave of immigration. If you want to increase your understanding of Latino cultures in the USA, read this book.
