Not complete.......2007-09-21
I have the book Painter IX for Photographers. I have not been able to get images from the disc into my IMac G5.
I made some effort to call for help but couldn't get through or some reason I can't recall. I have been disgusted and very busy to get back into the book. I wasn't able to actually use the programs without the disc access. I am not a beginner in digital. Nelson Paden
PS This is a call for assistance and basically not a review.
Photos into digital art.......2007-05-13
Very clear and comprehensive tutorials for turning photos into digital art. Excellent book. Highly recomended. Digital tablet a must-have.
I liked the book.......2007-03-27
I liked the book. I found it to be what I was looking for. That is to say a book that was easy to follow, yet sophisticated enought to allow me to create the digital painting look, on a particular photograph, that I was wanting. I experienced success on my first attempt at a particular technique in the book and am anxiously looking for more spare time to devote to creating other techniques covered in the book. I love the look of digital painting and found this book an excellent resource to get me started with painting and also the software. This is my first time working with this software. If you want a book that is well written with easy to follow instructions...I think that you may be very pleased, as I was, with this one. I highly recommend it.
Exactly what I was looking for.......2007-02-06
I was looking for a book that would teach me to paint over photos, giving them not just a painterly look, but a painted look, ala Fay Sirkis, and this book delivers. The examples provided on Amazon and on the book's web site don't to it justice. The tutorials and examples do what good tutorials are supposed to: they provide the foundation, and leave it up to the artist to infuse the work with his or her vision. After having read this book and worked through the examples, if you have a good photo to start with, there's no reason whatsoever that you can't turn out a digital painting in any number of styles.
Renders Painter IX comprehensible.......2007-01-23
Painter has long confused me. I'm not an "artist", just a photography hobbyist interested in new ways of expression. Painter always seemed just too tough, too steep a learning curve for the casual user.
This book makes Painter to easy to understand and use for the photographer. The book is useful to users of Photoshop, Photoshop Elements and Paint Shop Pro.
Addision moves at a comfortable pace, exploring one tool after another. His projects and exercises are not demanding, but are very instructive. Many examples are provided on the accompanying CD-ROM.
Overall, this is a great way for any photographer wanting to expand their capabilities to learn Painter. I wish there more books like this for other difficult to master programs. I recommend it highly.

Ryoko leads the group into space in search of lost treasure, encountering an old love along the way.
Customer Reviews:
the best one EVER.......2002-02-24
This is definately my favorite volume of the manga! Ryoko is my heroine, so I loved seeing her in action! This book is great because it shows both sides of Ryoko; we really get a good glimpse at the softer side which she often keeps hidden. The story itself is awesome, the gang ventures into space in search of a treasure Ryoko vaguely remembers, and on a distant planet they meet up with a mysterious stranger who Ryoko knew 800 years before! You have got to get this manga! This was the first volume of the manga I bought and after reading it I was convinced to exand my collection. Get it now!
The Quest For More Money.......2001-07-12
The story for "No Need For Tenchi Vol.9:The Quest For More Money" begins on the day after a huge party.Ryoko has a strange dream and the Masaki family discover they have no more money. Then Ryoko remembers a treasure she once tried to get 800 years ago. Ayeka suggests that they go to retrieve the treasure to solve their money problem. Soon, they are off on their quest. When they reach their destination, they meet Ryoko's first love! They are also being chased by a space pirate and a crazy robot. Will the Masaki family ever get the treasure? Will the badguys win? Will Ryoko find out what happened 800 years ago? Who will Ryoko love? To find out what happens, you'll have to read it. I thought this graphic novel was really excellent. I loved the art, the story, and the characters. The arthor of this book, Hitoshi Okuda, did a great job. If you like manga, science fiction, comedy, drama, and adventure, then get this book.
GREAT COMIC!.......2001-06-29
THIS IS A DEFINITE MUST BUY! if you are really into tenchi/ryoko love, this is definitly the comic for you. it contains numerous scenes in which u can really see there are sparks between ryoko and tenchi. and, even if u ARENT into ryoko/tenchi stuff, its still a really great addition to the no need for tenchi manga series!!! I must insist that u get it now!
Cool Ryoko Story.......2001-02-17
Okay for all you people out there who don't already know this, this book is already out in america. I bought in january. Look for it. This is the best one I have read so far, but I haven't read all of them. The Tenchi family is broke and Ryoko remembers hearing about a treasure so they go off to find it. There is also a guy there who likes her. I won't spoil the book, but there is an AWESOME action scene with Tenchi and Ryoko. I would definetly get this book.

Excellent reference on silent film shorts.......2000-04-01
This thick book details all silent film shorts (films of four reels or less) that were known to survive in 1988 in FIAF archives. (It does not include films which were only held in private collectors' hands.) Organized by country and then by year, it includes actor, writer, director, and studio information. There are quite a few indexes in the back so that if you are looking for surviving shorts by actor, director, etc. they are easy to find. This book is a must for anyone doing research on silent film. A list of participating film archives and their addresses is included. My only regret about this book is that it needs to be updated with listings for films that have been rediscovered since it was published.

The author of two previous essay collections, Francis Davis claims to be going through a period of disenchantment with jazz. He decries the "commodification of youth," which has allowed a pack of young neo-bop players to shoulder aside many a deserving, middle-aged master. Despite this case of the blahs, Davis's prose is as shapely as ever, and his book is full of gems. There are standout essays on Mel Lewis, Don Byron, Charles Gayle, Roswell Rudd, and Tony Bennett, which resemble scaled-down short stories in their narrative ingenuity.

An easy-to-follow, non-technical approach to using game theory in every business battle
Game theory has become entrenched in today's business world. It has also often required oppressive and incomprehensible mathematics. Game Theory at Work steers around math and pedagogy to make this innovative tool accessible to a larger audience and allow all levels of business to use it to both improve decision-making skills and eliminate potentially lethal uncertainty.
This proven tool requires everyone in an organization to look at the competition, guage his or her own responses to their actions, and then establish an appropriate strategy. Game Theory at Work will help business leaders at all levels improve their overall performance in:
- Negotiating
- Decision making
- Establishing strategic alliances
- Marketing
- Positioning
- Branding
- Pricing
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Review.......2007-06-12
The book has been misunderstood and so was the author. This book is about strategy and should not be confused with ethics. A large number of decisions that are made in daily life are not always morally correct but they are still strategic. The author was honest and outspoken. This is something that should be appreciated and not criticized. This book is people who just want to enjoy a good read of strategy and not start a theological analysis. My sincere wishes and respect for the author.
Easy to understand intro to game theory in the real world.......2007-05-30
Forget the reviewers who panned it, they do not seem to even begin to understand the premises of game theory. Game theory is not about morality, it is about how a totally rational entity that wants to maximize his payoffs should act. This book has a lot of useful insights and is very easy to read.
Worthless.......2006-03-01
This book underestimates the intelligence of reader, oversimplifies, and offends. I recommend Dixit and Nalebuffs' "Thinking Strategically", which is infinitely better; or if you are not afraid of elementary algebra, the classic Luce and Raiffa "Games and Decisions" published in 1957 and now available as a Dover edition.
A Complete Load of C$%P.......2006-02-24
Do not buy this book if you want to learn anything meaningful or "real world" about game theory. The author's examples are irrelevant and in some cases not applicable to game theory constructs.
Useful but there's a question of ethics .......2005-08-17
While I'm for any book which may prove useful in life and grant that Mr. Miller's might be one of those, I see by other reviews and by my own investigation that Mr. Miller's wife, Prof. Debbie Felton Miller, has not only given her husband's book a 5-star rating but has co-authored at least two other articles & books with him. This info is from the umass.edu website in the "faculty" section as follows:
Recent Publications
2002. With James D. Miller. Using Greek Mythology to Teach Game Theory. The American Economist 46.2.
2002. With James D. Miller. Truth Inducement in Greek Myth. Syllecta Classica 13.104-25.
This calls into question the ethics and honesty of both the author and this "educator" who is tenured at the University of Massachussets. Another point worth mentioning is that David Miller is a contributing editor at Tech Central Station which is an online platform for conservative and right-wing political types. (I've been reading his and other articles there) - [...]
I would not recommend this book, unless one is interested in being persuaded to accept questionable ideologies and questionable ethics of the "me first" variety.
Book Description
Earl Hamner, a Virginia native, is one of America's best-loved storytellers, but he has never been the subject of a full-length study. EARL HAMNER: FROM WALTON'S MOUNTAIN TO TOMORROW fills that gap.
Hamner once said, "Even though families are said to be shattered these days, and God is said to be dead, if people can revisit the scenes and places where these values did exist, possibly they can come to believe in them again, or...to adapt some kind of belief in God, or faith in the family unit, or just getting home again." This vision of what makes for a whole life permeates all of Hamner's work. It is present in the novel SPENCER'S MOUNTAIN, upon which THE WALTONS is loosely based, and in his screenplays, such as the work he is perhaps most proud of, CHARLOTTE'S WEB. It is even present in such unlikely places as the eight scripts he contributed to the classic television series THE TWILIGHT ZONE and in the tales of cold-blooded betrayal and boundless ambition depicted on FALCON CREST.
In EARL HAMNER: FROM WALTON'S MOUNTAIN TO TOMORROW, readers will discover the integrated nature of his career. A pervasive theme runs throughout Hamner's work, that of a man forever taking a backward glance to his roots for direction in the way of what makes life worthwhile. Upon learning that this book was being written, Hamner told one of his friends, "I can't imagine anyone wanting to read a book about me, much less write one about me." Readers of this book will find Hamner's doubts indeed misplaced and will discover a delightful individual who has enjoyed a long, accomplished career as a storyteller, laboring for a worthy goal: that posterity may know of an age and a people whose legacy has not, through silence, been permitted to pass away as in a dream.

True Protrayal .......2007-01-05
This book provides excellant insight on Earl Hamner. My wife and I belong to the International Walton's Fan Club and have meet Earl several times at Walton Reunions. Mr. Hamner is a talented writter and a wonderful person.
I am a fan of Earl Hamner, but I wish he was the author of this bio.......2006-01-07
Earl Hamner is genious, intelligent, heartfelt, honest man. He created the best show on t.v., "The Waltons." This books opens a lot of interesting history of his career and family. The author spends too much time indulging other writers works, and trying to compare them to Earl Hamner. I wish Earl was the author of his bio. You will discover his works from Charlotte's Web, Falcon Crest, Snowy River, Spencer's Mountain, The Homecoming, and of course, The Waltons.
Sections of the book gets very boring, and turns away from Earl's life. The rest of the book is well written. We need more writers & producers like Earl Hamner.
God Bless The Waltons!
Like Reading About One Of The Family.......2005-09-16
Earl Hamner,Jr. is as familiar to some of us as our own father, or grandfather. He has been a part of our lives for as much as the last thirty or so years, since his book "The Homecoming" aired as a made for tv Christmas movie, and the long running series,"The Waltons" took over our living rooms every Thursday night.
The series was based on Mr. Hamner's life growing up in the Blue Ridge Mountains during the depression, and the stories related to many of us,having touched on our families and their histories, stories that were told to us by our parents and grandparents, and some that lived through those times themselves.
Earl had a special gift in his ability to tie that world in with ours, reminding us even still today the meaning of family. He could even make those without a family feel like they were part of one.
Mr. Person's book not only presents a great tribute to a great man, but his writing also has the ability to make the reader feel as though they are reading about one of thier own family, but with some surprises along the way.If I had only one comment about the book it would be that I only wish there were more pages to read in it! Great job,Mr.Person!
A fine account of his lively career and many literary contributions evolves.......2005-09-05
Mention 'Earl Hamner' and savvy book readers will instantly recognize his name as the creator of the beloved Waltons, which became a hit TV show - but there's more to his life than Walton's Mountain, as Earl Hamner: From Walton's Mountain To Tomorrow reveals. Hamner was raised in small town Virginia and discovered writing at a young age, becoming a published writer at the age of six. He did much more than just The Waltons: he produced eight scripts for The Twilight Zone, did the screenplay for Charlotte's Web, and was loved and respected for his talents. A fine account of his lively career and many literary contributions evolves.
An interesting book about an important man.......2005-08-04
Jim Person, who has written three books and over one hundred articles, has a gift when it comes to analyzing, comparing, and critiquing works of literature. In this book he is also gifted with his subject, Earl Hamner. Largely because he is such a humble man, most people do not know much about Earl's career or the extent of his works. If his name sounds familiar, it is because it appears in the opening credits of one of the most beloved series ever on television, The Waltons. Not only was Earl the creator and one of the principal writers of the show based on his life growing up in the Blue Ridge Mountains during the Great Depression, it was his distinctive voice that opened and closed the show. But The Waltons was a mid-career project; you will be surprised to learn in this book how much Earl has done before and after it, across genres. After keeping a journal while he was growing up, he started his career writing radio scripts, has penned nine books, wrote eight Twilight Zone scripts, was the creator of another long-running series Falcon Crest, and was the screenwriter for the animated film Charlotte's Web. In addition, Earl produced or, according to Person, was the "guiding hand" for a number of other series and specials including Brewster Place, Snowy River: The McGregor Saga, and a PBS presentation called The Ponder Heart.
As Person describes in this critical biography, much of Earl's work is influenced by his upbringing. Throughout Earl Hamner's award-winning career, he has maintained his personal integrity, an air of gentility, and even that distinctive Virginia Scotch-Irish accent. But despite his conservative roots, he embraces all aspects of life. He has spent most of his life on the west coast, has traveled extensively, and clearly loves people. He is a sensitive writer who is not afraid to write heartwarming and inspiring stories from which, although he maintains that it has never been his intent to instill lessons, you will learn none-the-less.
Throughout the writing of this biography, Jim Person and Earl Hamner apparently became fast friends, and it's easy to see why. Earl was amazed that Jim was able to capture the essence of him so easily but, in my opinion, it's because the two men are so much alike. At this point I must confess that I am friends with both of them and it's easy to see why they "get" each other. Both are great writers but, more than that, they are great guys: fun-loving, hard-working, principled, and above all, humble.
Cumberland House did an outstanding job putting the book together with photos of Earl, his childhood home, and his beloved mountains on the cover, and many never-before-seen photos sprinkled throughout the book. This is a great read. If you are not already familiar with Earl's works, Earl Hamner: From Walton's Mountain to Tomorrow will make you want to investigate them, and to check out more of Jim Person's writings as well.

For high school to college library collections!.......2006-03-13
Both high school and college-level history collections as well as specialty libraries will consider the four- volume set AMERICANS AT WAR: SOCIETY, CULTURE, AND THE HOMEFRONT to be an essential acquisition: each volume packs in an A-Z encyclopedic reference with sidebars of information and plenty of bibliographic references for further reading. From the battle histories of historical monuments such as Bunker Hill to the history and symbolism of various flags, occupation patterns during the Civil War and their lasting effects, medicine during World War I, and sports during World War II, each volume in the series tackles major social and cultural developments of different wartime experiences, reaching deep into the heart of war's effects at home. Highly recommended.
Book Description
Like no book before it,
Preachers of Hate uncovers an ancient hatred that threatens the life and livelihood of every American. The “new” anti-Semitism targets not only Jews, but Americans specifically and the West in general. It targets our values, our lifestyle, and our freedoms. It is the single most important issue we face when trying to make sense of the Arab world.
Most Americans will be stunned to discover the depth and extent of anti-Semitic hatred in today’s Middle East and Europe, and that many Muslim leaders are not just encouraging it, but spending a great deal of money to spread the lies that spawned the terrorists responsible for the September 11 attack on America. In Preachers of Hate, bestselling author Kenneth R. Timmerman (who is not Jewish) contends that, besides Islam itself, the core unifying force in the Muslim world is a virulent strain of anti-Semitism that postulates the existence of a Jewish conspiracy to take over the world. From the pulpits of fiery Muslim clerics to the Arab street, and to the highest reaches of government and state-sponsored media, there is a belief that this thousand-year-old conspiracy has already taken hold in America and is now, especially after the war in Iraq, about to do the same in the Middle East and beyond. It is seen as no less than Muslims’ historical destiny to prevent such a takeover, and to do so by any means possible. To misunderstand the ferocity of that belief is to vastly underestimate the resolve of many Muslims to repel America, Israel, and all things Western.
Timmerman explores the roots of this hatred, examining its history, the religious sources upon which it draws, and how it is being transmitted to young people growing up in Arab societies by their leaders, their teachers, and their mosques. He documents how U.S. and European Union money has been used to finance hatred in Palestinian schools. He exposes the double-talk of Arab leaders and their supporters in the West. As it so often was throughout history, this new strain of Jew hatred is really about much more than Jews. They get attacked first, when the enemies of America can’t attack Americans. However, what begins with the Jews never ends with the Jews.
“Is there a conspiracy between America and the Jews?” asks Timmerman. “Indeed there is: A common heritage, a dedication to improving the human condition through compassion and tolerance of differences—a conspiracy of freedom. And that is why they hate us.” As with the Jews throughout history, America has been “unfairly successful.” As have the Jews, Americans have “profited” from the misery and poverty of others. If you hate Jews, you must also hate America. Such is the simple logic of the anti-Semite. Such, increasingly, is the logic of the Middle East. It is a message that is reinforced day in and day out by the official government-sanctioned Arab media, from the streets of Egypt, London, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Paris, and Gaza, and in the mosques where impassioned clerics quote verbatim texts like the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a pillar of anti-Semitic hatred that originated in czarist Russia.
As America reasserts her role in the Middle East and attempts to bring peace between Jews and Arabs,
Preachers of Hate is an essential book that reframes a very complicated issue as a matter of life and death.
Customer Reviews:
the rise of the new antisemitism.......2007-04-04
This is a highly narrative and even rambling exposition of the activities of Islamists around the world. This folksy approach will appeal to some people who find nonfiction "dry." It is also a highly first-hand account, providing a been-there, done-that feel.
Now and then, there is a striking piece of information that illuminates the situation that you will not read about in the mainstream press or see on TV, such as the government's seizing of the "Benevolence International Foundation's" videos and documents glorifying martyrdom in operations against Americans and Jews. (p. 281) "According to the charity's newsletter, seven of its officers were killed last year in battle in Chechnya and Bosnia." (p. 281)
The focus of the book is on the resurgence of anti-Jewish hate speech and activities in the U. S. and Europe, but a lot of attention is paid to Palestine and its never-ending series of "peace plans."
For those who want their information quick and to the point, and who want to know everything else that is going on in America that is threatening our future, see the new book, While America Sleeps: How Islam, Immigration and Indoctrination are Destroying America From Within. The times they are a-changin' and the people who know least about these changes will be the hardest hit.
The Truth Matters.......2007-03-06
Two nuggets of inestimable value surfaced in this book for me. First, it is the realization that the stupefying double-speak of so many Islamic voices is made possible by the fact that they say different things in English than they say in Arabic. The answer to this problem, as Timmerman so powerfully proves, is MEMRI (The Middle East Media and Research Institute). MEMRI is a translation service that publishes transcripts in English of articles, book excerpts, speeches, TV and radio programs, sermons, pamphlets, and school books from throughout the Middle East. Wow! I continue to be amazed and horrified by the things being said across the Arab world.
The second little gem that emerged from this important book is this question: what standards of scholarship exist in the Muslim world that would allow men of advanced degrees, academicians, professors, journalists, heads of state and leaders of the most important institutions of society to believe and disseminate such an absurd collection of wacko, lunatic theories that now consume the fetid minds of the Islamic world. From the utterly stupid, but widely reported stories of Jews distributing AIDS laced chewing gum to children; to the foolish notion of Jewish blood pastries; to the newest idiocy to sweep the universities of Islam: Holocaust Denial. It is as if entire nations were being led by the most ignorant collections of back-woods, hood-wearing, good old boys who, instead of being rejected utterly for their racism and stupidity are given credence and legitimacy on the world's stage. Does the King of Saudi Arabia also believe that the moon is made of cheese? Are the Universities of Egypt convening symposia to discuss why ships don't fall when they reach the edge of the flat earth? And exactly how many Syrian Generals does it take to screw in a light bulb?
The Truth matters and the world is burning wherever silly men are allowed to tell lies to support their irrational hatred of Jews or Israel or Bush or the US or (insert object of hatred by lunatic fringe conspiracy theorists here). Read Timmerman and be amazed.
Truly Appalling.......2006-12-30
"Preachers of Hate" is an unequivocally shocking documentation of the prevalent anti-Semitism existing in the Muslim world today. Kenneth Timmerman's research and presentation of the facts makes it almost undeniable that such hate around the globe still exists today despite Islamic apologetics' efforts to conceal or justify it. This book does not hypocritically preach hate itself, as some disparagers might imply but more so presents theories backed by a multiple of pages of resources. He refrains from advocating counter-hate and compels a reader to wake up and see what is happening.
Any Westerner who has ever seen a news show in his/her life is aware of the violence and intolerance preached in the region but many are not aware of to what depth the prejudice runs in the veins of the Muslim world. Although the book is rather long and a time-consuming read, there doesn't seem to be another of it's kind available today. Mr. Timmerman proves an undeniable fact that anti-Semitism still exists in the world and how many try to excuse or vindicate it. Some examples he sets forth in the book will leave a reader in disbelief such as this excerpt from Page 9:
"Arabs living in the West expressed similar "comprehension" of the attacks and motives of the attackers. In the Washington D.C. suburb of Fairfax, Virginia, public school officials ordered high school students to return home by noontime on the day of the attacks. "They closed the schools not out of fear of a terrorist attack, but because Muslim students were shouting for joy" said David Keene".
One would not even know where to begin to confute his testament that this sort of bigotry is still very much alive currently. If you deny that the essence of this book is entirely fiction, ask Mahmoud Ahmadinejad yourself.
Isn't this book a little onesided?.......2006-04-21
I have found this book interesting and it has opened my eyes to some new things. I would not be surprised if much of it was true. The thing that I object to is that every story has two sides to it. I have known Arabs that were good people and I do not believe that Islam is evil per say. They were the civilized people when we Europeans were barbarians in the dark ages and did not know how to read or do math or that we should take a bath. We owe some thanks to the light the Arabs kept alive that contributed to kindling the renaissance and bring a new age of learning into the world. I am a Christian and believe that "Jesus is the way, the truth and the life" but I am aware that the Christian religion has a dark side to its history also. There have been and still are people who think they understand it and want to enforce it with the "sword". I love being an American and am grateful for the goodness and freedoms that are found in our country, though I know that we have a dark side to our history also with such things as slavery and our dealings with Native Americans and the many broken and unfulfilled treaties we made with them. I am also aware that the state of Israel has done things in there history that was not right. I don't know if we can ever learn to live together as a world community, but I do not believe that hating and distrusting all Arabs will help much. We need to live in the real world and I don't know all the answers, but I think that we ought to look for the good in those we come in contact with on an individual bases and try and build on that. There is too much of self-righteousness and hate and misinformation spread on all side. I found this book to be a bit one sided.
Eye Opening.......2006-04-03
I'm more than halfway through. I have to stop all the time to tell my family about it. I feel like I've been betrayed by the media and our government and our schools for never mentioning this information.
There is a world of hate that wants to destroy us and we don't even know about it. Islamic countries and their leaders have declared war on us (America and the West) and we don't do anything about it.
I'm not going to run through the info, just suffice to say, if you want to know about Islam and it's goals, actions, funding, workings and far reaching influence, you MUST READ THIS BOOK!
