Book Description
In the army, the advance guard is the first wave of soldiers who rush into enemy territory, risking their lives to map out the terrain. In the arts, the avant-garde consists of people who have devoted their talents, even their lives, to seeing the future and to confronting others with their visions. This intriguing introduction to modern art examines the avant-garde from its nineteenth-century origins in Paris to its meaning and influence today. It presents the visionaries who took the greatest risks, who saw the furthest, and who made the most challenging art-art that changed how we imagine our world. From cubism to pop art and beyond, this is the story not only of those risk takers, but of their creations and of the times in which they lived. Notes, bibliography, index.

Great intro to modern art for teens & curious adults.......1999-12-22
As mentioned by the reviewers above, this book is intended forteens. However, non-enthusiasts adult readers that want to know moreabout the history of modern art will enjoy it as well.
Basically, the author has attempted to show how modern artists have affected modern society and vice versa. Unlike many art history books, this book talks about music, theater, dance and subcultures in society, such as the beats and the hippies. Accordingly, you end up with a fuller picture of the scene.
The author has also attempted to make the impact of these works understandable to teens by using examples from the world as teens know it today, such as rap music, Internet, etc.
All in all, teens interested in the art scene will find this book interesting and engrossing.
Why 4 stars, rather than 5? I would prefer 4.5 stars, but that's not an option. My main objection to this book is the author's tendency to mythologize the avant garde artist and to whitewash some of their problems. But I would still recommend this book.
Book Description
Through hundreds of eye-popping reproductions, All Wrapped Up! celebrates gift wrap that most ephemeral of paper products from the groovy 1960s. The modest palette and conventional patterns of the previous decade eventually yielded to the riotous colors, op art, and psychedelic visions that defined the late '60s, charting a course through the entire spectrum of mid-century graphic design and commercial illustration. Popular imagery of cute animals, adorable children, barbecue iconography for dad, funky florals, and Santas of every stripe grace these pages. A thoughfully wrapped present is a gift in itself, and All Wrapped Up! is the perfect package to celebrate the popular designs of the most visually exuberant decade of all.

A perfect little coffee table art book. Lots of great, colourful scans and not much annoying text...unique and fun!
1960s "Adult Kids re-Collecting Our Childhood" Must Have!.......2006-06-29
I hardly ever write a review here, but I ordered this book for myself for Christmas 2005 and have been looking at it probably weekly since then. As a 43 year old child of 1962 and collector of everything 1950s, 60s, and 70s, this book brought SUCH a smile to my face when I initially flipped through it and has continued to bring joy. For those of us who truly relish images/graphics/design styles from our past -- feed your brain with THIS book and feel your dopamine and serotonin levels spill all over themselves as you take that trip down memory lane into Christmases, birthdays, and baby/bridal showers past! Then, buy a copy for all of your retro type friends!
wow!.......2006-01-04
this book is amazing! i don't know how they found all these incredible patterns! the book is just jam packed with those fun wrapping papers from the 60's. a great gift for any pop-arty design fan!!!
Groovy Gift - Gotta Get this Book!.......2005-05-04
This book will bring back so many memories. If you're 40 something, you'll want a copy for yourself, one for your parents and more for your 40-something friends. It's a scrapbook of the groovy generation and the perfect gift for the person who thinks he has everything! All Wrapped Up is a gorgeous book. My kids loved looking through it. It sparked a lot of conversation about what it was like to live in the 1960's.
You'll not only remember every birthday you had in the 60s but you'll start to remember songs you forgot, commercials you saw on television and the gifts you received. This wonderful book is a treasure.
KEEP THIS OUT ON THE COFFEE TABLE!.......2005-04-10
A most delightful look at 1960s! I have to say, as an artist, I ripped-off a couple of the cool ideas I found on the pages of this book! The Christmas section if wonderful and the animal section is ultra hip with a lot of retro creatures to conjur up a few smiles. Lots of beautiful patterns in the flower power section and the masculine section is a laugh out loud! The author gives a nice overview of the industry and there is a concise little history of 60s design in the front. I never write reviews but I really did love this book!

What's the best move? One that will disturb your opponant the most. Regardless of your playing strength, chess psychology will help you maximise your playing strength--and win more games.
Customer Reviews:
Good, off beat chess book!.......2003-10-17
This is a very nice book which addresses a big underrated factor in chess... psychology. This should not be someone's first or second chess book, but a good 5th-6th book for a tournament player. It's also a fun book to read. Instead of just going over routine diagrams and analysis, it's off beat topic allows for some learning in a non-tactical aspect of chess.
This book will not be useful to a beginner or as useful to someone who just plays casually on the internet. However, if you play over the board, in games that matter, psychology comes into play.
It gives lots of history and examples on the application of psychology, then it describes certain aspects such as:
The opening, endgame, drawing, time pressure, and playing women or computers. A few of the tips are only applicable to people who play each other regularly, such as changing openings. However, much of the rest applies... such as if your opponent tries some surprise lines in the opening?
What really is chess psychology? For example:
It can be tough on adults to get outsmarted by a 10 year old who can't even do long division, but the fact is that it happens often. Adults get nervous and then a loss is a big blow to their egos. However, children's weakness are they play quickly, impatient, like to avoid complicated positions, and generally have weak endgame skills. So what to do? Play slow (they don't have the patience to sit still), stay complicated (they don't have the patience to analyze many options), and look forward to the endgame. This is pyschology. My ego is happy to report that I haven't lost to a kid yet.
It is creatively written by GM Pal Benko, a 8 time US Open Champion and one of the most prominent American players in the 2nd half of the 20th century.
Not the best.......2002-01-01
The content is effective only if your opponent is someone you've played against many times. For the Internet player there are so many different styles that this book is virtually useless. If there is one thing I can say good about this book it would be that there were some interesting stories about former chess champions.
Book Description
Advertising and Promotion: An Integrated Marketing Communications Perspective, 6/e, by Belch and Belch, is the number one text in the Advertising market. As the field of advertising and promotion continues to dramatically change since the dominant days of high-powered Madison Avenue agencies, marketers must look beyond traditional media in order to achieve success. In order to best communicate with consumers, advertisers must utilize a myriad of tools (advertising, public relations, direct marketing, interactive/Internet marketing, sales promotion, and personal selling); Belch/Belch is the first book to reflect the shift from the conventional methods of advertising to the more widely recognized approach of implementing an integrated marketing communications strategy. The text underscores the importance of recognizing that a firm must use all promotional tools available to convey a unified message to the consumer. The integrated marketing communications perspective, (the theme of the text), catapults the reader into the business practices of the 21st century.
Customer Reviews:
Good intro to IMC.......2005-09-22
I am reading this book for a Marketing class and I love it. I have used other books by the authors and they are very good. It's a good read and not to boring. You can tell the authors make an attempt to keep the material relevant.
From a Marketing Student.......2002-11-24
One of my marketing classes is using this book. I have experienced so much PAIN reading this book that I have to give it a 3 star to release my frustration. The chapters are extremely long. The overall concept of the book is good. There are also interesting facts and exhibits, but sometimes the book keeps repeating itself. For example, in Chapter 16 Sales Promotion, the authors talk about consumer franchise-building promotions. The same concept appears later on in the chapter over and over as individual paragraphs. I understand that a lot of the marketing concepts are interrelated, but they can be expressed much more efficiently.
Extensive in theory but current and entertaining.......1999-11-10
This book is theoretical and full of examples of applied theories of advertising. It is presently being used at an AACSB accredited University in the Marketing department and students do enjoy it because of its current content and entertaining format.
An awesome book!.......1999-09-28
I have just completed reading Advertising and Promotion: An Integrated Marketing communications Perspective by Belch and Belch. I found it to be the best source of information available on this topic. The text is extremely comprehensive, yet very interesting to read. At my job as a marketing director, this book is invaluable. I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to develop an integrated marketing communications plan. I will also suggest it to my advertising agency.
Book Description
Practicing baseball with Dad, then watching him go after a cow with a pitchfork in a fit of rage. Playing chicken on the county road with semi trucks full of hogs. Flirting with the milkman. Chasing with your sisters after Wreck and Bump, mangy mutts who prowl farmsteads killing chickens and drinking fuel oil. Dandelion wine. The ghost of a girl buried alive over a century ago. These unforgettable, sometimes hilarious images spill from a fierce and wondrous childhood into the pages of The Summer of Ordinary Ways.
“Helget wrings intensity from the seemingly mundane—a family farm, the kitchen, a sleepy Midwestern town—to recreate a past that lives on somewhere between a dream and a nightmare. In The Summer of Ordinary Ways, every detail is authentic and resonant, every moment feels lived. Helget’s debut is nothing short of remarkable.” —Rosellen Brown, author of Tender Mercies
“Marvelous, vibrant, and full of gritty energy, carrying the reader on a breathless ride across hills and valleys of pain, humor, and redemption.”—Faith Sullivan, author of The Cape Ann
“Written with blistering beauty, this fierce memoir is an elegy for broken spirits—human and animal—and a prayer for those able to face their past. ” —Bart Schneider, author of Beautiful Inez
“After Helget lulls you with the simplicity so often mistakenly ascribed to country life, she takes your breath away with the sheer power and poetry of her emotional integrity.”—Booklist (starred review)
“In precise, cadenced prose, this gifted young author has taken the messiest of lives and fashioned something beautiful.”—People magazine (Critic’s Choice, four stars)
Nicole Lea Helget studies and teaches at Minnesota State University–Mankato. She is the winner of the 2004 Speakeasy Prize for Prose. This is her first book.

Interesting..........2007-06-16
I didnt pick this book randomly off the shelf, I work in Sleepy Eye MN, closely with the people. I did not grow up in Sleepy Eye, but in another small farming community. I know some of the people who she is talking about, although I do not know her or any of her immedate famliy. There was a huge uproar here about this book when it came out and I had to see what it was all about, of course!
What I found was someone I knew, a girl raised with the same type of envirnment I think most of us were raised with in small midwestern farm towns. The local stories, small town attitude, where everyone knows everyones business and you are judged by your last name, relatives and great-grandfathers history 'all those Haalas are crazy'. I found myself and my friends in her stories, my sister, my parents. Its a story about life, the memories of a girl and a kid becoming a woman the fast way, by becoming a mother. She made me feel I was with her @ the nuns retreat, when her dad shot the puppies, on her uncles bike. I was rereading a story I already know. It was creepy, but comforting. I think thats talent.
I really enjoyed this book, the style is different, jumping around, even mid story, to different, semi-related stories, different then what I'm used to, I guess. Her discriptions make me see the tree, the barn, her uniform, blue and white on the steps of St. Marys Catholic School. Beautifully discripted. Definately not the brutal, horrible book some people 'couldnt even finish'.
If you grew up in a small town, or in a large close-nit family, you will relate to Nicole. A glimps of snipits of small town life, real or imagined by her, is truely what this novel is.
A riveting story by an extraordinary writer.......2006-06-17
In my long reading life I have rarely come across a book written in such compelling and poetic language. I have just read Nicole Lea Helget's memoir in one sitting and can scarcely catch my breath. And to those who might question the authenticity of the book, please remember that a child's interpretation of happenings may not always agree with that of an adult who was there, too, but that does not make the child's recollection any less true. Just think about the mysteries and taboos in your own childhood!
Harsh and dry--the story and the weather........2006-06-13
This collection of beautifully written short pieces work together to give a view into a difficult Minnesota childhood. It's a stark story, and slim in several ways. Pages aside, it lacks context, and the landscape is almost missing, which is odd for a farm story. The writer's gift with words is considerable, and the final chapter left me gasping (what a tour de force). Did I like it? yes, I did. Still, I have to ask, as a child, was there no laughter? Was her entire childhood taut and poetic, all smashed grasshoppers and bleeding animals? It seems in a family like this, there might have been at least some laughter. I guess that is another area where the book is slim--I didn't sense the fullness of a life when reading it. Perhaps she will write a longer exploration of her life, or a novel. If she does, I'll definitely read it, as she is quite a writer.
Stories of Animal Cruelty.......2006-05-05
I agree with the earlier reviewer, as far as mean people and animal cruelty go. I could hardly finish the book myself, not only because of the animal cruelty and abuse but also the author's total indifference to it. I don't particularly care to read about people abusing and killing animals (killing a mother cow because she wants to keep her calf, and shooting 13 puppies because "they are ugly"), and basically that is what a lot of this book is about. Not a very good or interesting read, author is whiney and self-absorbed - don't waste your time with this garbage.
Great Book!.......2006-03-29
I for one am glad this book is on the shelves. Just because you can't understand the realities of farm life, doesn't mean this book shouldn't have been written.

a piece of real journalism.......2005-10-14
Conroy rolls around in the grit and dirt of life in sectarian violence-shattered Belfast.
Everythings here-the horror stories, police violence, IRA knee-cappings, the tragic tales of getting involved with paramilitary groups, but what is most haunting is just how shatterd everyday life has become for everyone from Sandy Row to Shankhill.
I wouldn't call Conroy pro-Catholic or pro-nationalist be he does de-BBCize his storytelling for the reader giving them a look into the society and goings on of that large minority.
Conroy.
What the reader is ultimately left with is valuabe albiet painful insight into Western Europe's longest (and dirtiest) civil from an outsider's eye-witness view
Great read.......2004-05-10
I really enjoyed this book. I thought that Conroy did a great job putting the 'Troubles' in Belfast into perspective from an American living in the midst of it all. Having visted the area that he writes of brought back memories. I referred to his map at least 50 times during my reading of the book to recall the streets that I walked in relation to where he wrote the book and spent his time in Belfast. I highly recommend this book.
An indispensable account..........2003-08-27
of what it is like to live, work and experience the turmoil of "The Troubles." Conroy covered the Troubles the right way...he went in and lived among the people in Belfast instead of swooping in for drive-by interviews like too many journalists have done in the past. He also manages to convey what he experienced while maintaining objectivity...this skill when dealing with terrorist and paramilitary violence is something writers covering the "War on Terror" these days could learn from. Required reading for anybody interested in Northern Ireland, its history and how to possibly make a better future in that wartorn nation...
Necessary Read for the American Audience.......2003-06-19
This book was recommended to me as excellent reading about the Troubles, particularly for Americans. I whole-heartedly agree; it is all that and more. Conroy does describe the daily workings of life in Northern Ireland but he also tackles the prejudices and ignorance of Americans (and the U.S. government) when it comes to the political climate in Northern Ireland. He pulls no punches and sugar-coats no issues. He explicates the situation as he sees it and is not afraid to indict those who turn blind eyes. The version I read was older so I have not yet seen the updated book that includes information on semi-recent IRA ceasefires. But I do think many of Conroy's observations are still applicable, changes in administration notwithstanding. He describes the intolerant view towards Sinn Fein taken by the American government in the 80s and the biased, oversimplified treatment of the Troubles by the American media. Indeed as Conroy notes it has not been hard to sell the British point-of-view to American audiences but what of the counterpoint? When do proponents of the other side get a chance? Conroy also concludes that for as long as Northern Ireland remains a British enclave, continued violence is guaranteed. For that reason alone, Americans owe it to themselves to read _Belfast Diary_.
The Dark Side of Ulster.......2003-02-19
My wife and I returned from a trip to Northern Ireland in SEP02 and purchased a copy of Belfast Diary. Simply, Belfast Diary is a book about a journalist from Chicago who rents a room in a home in Belfast to learn more about the Troubles. As mentioned by the other people who submitted reviews about this book, I couldn't put it down. However, I couldn't give this book five stars because I thought it painted a picture of the Troubles as seen from one side of the street. The author traveled to Belfast from Chicago (where each year they turn the river green on St. Patrick's Day), he worked on this book in a rented room in a home located in a Catholic section of Belfast, and he mentions that he is married to a Catholic woman from Northern Ireland. In my opinion, this book would have been much better had it been balanced. There are two sides to every conflict.
Thankfully a lot has changed in Belfast since Mr. Conroy wrote this book about what he experienced while living in the British province. Things have clearly changed for Ulster, which has become one of the up and coming destinations for tourists (as mentioned in Travel Weekly magazine in FEB03). A trip to Northern Ireland is a fascinating educational experience.

Ounce for ounce the Hercules among birds, yet small enough to get lost in a teacup, hummers spend their days tirelessly darting among flowers, probing for calorie-rich nectar with their needlelike bills. Whether viewed as animated energy or nature's still life, no two organisms are more perfectly suited to each other than hummingbirds and flowers. In
