The Jackas have done it again! If you are already a collector of Hopi art, or are seeking an introduction to the works of these talented artists, this book is one to add to your library. From baskets and pottery to jewelry and katsina dolls, examples of some of the BEST contemporary Hopi art are captured in the photographic images of Jerry Jacka. Lois Jacka shares both historical and contemporary information in the accompanying text which is extremely well written. It is a "keeper"; well worth it's cover price.

    Book Description

Photography is in the midst of a revolution. Rohn Engh shows part-time and professional photographers how to compete with the big agencies by using the Internet--the new frontier of stock photography sales--and by determining how their images, both traditional and digital, are delivered and paid for. A comprehensive guide, sellphotos.com covers everything for photographers from Internet basics and the nature of the stock photography trade to building their own web sites and operating their own business.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good photo marketing and business book.......2004-07-02

If you've read Rohn Engh's previous book titled Sell and Re-Sell Your Photos, then you might want to skip SellPhotos.com. Approximately half of the information is straight out of Sell and Re-Sell Your Photos.

That said, I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about the stock photography business. It covers a variety of business-oriented topics, such as forms, letters, pricing, marketing, legal issues, etc. The author's words are very encouraging--by the time you're done with this book, you will feel confident enough to run a successful stock photography business.

As for "Establishing a Successful Stock Photography Business on the Internet," this book falls short. This book was published in January 2000, when the internet was still very much the wild west. The internet, as well as technology in general, has evolved quite a bit in the past few years, making some of the information in this book obsolete.

If you don't mind weeding out the obsolete information, then I recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Out of date.......2004-06-12

The book was decent and informative but out of date.It does give you a good idea about using the internet and setting up a web site to help sell your photos in the marketplace.
It was published in 2000. It refers to using windows 95 & 98 and modems with 2800 baud. It is out of date, he needs to update the book.
I paid a discount price of 13.99 for it but it should be selling for less.
I read his other book "How to sell and resell your photos" which was a very good book for photographers thinking of going into stock photography.
It would be nice to see an update with the newer XP operating system and newer software programs and web sites listed.

3 out of 5 stars SellPhotos.Com: Your Guide to Establishing a Successful Stoc.......2003-03-18

This book does have alot of good information in it about establishing an online stock photography business.

I gave it three stars because it is severlly outdated on the technology and URL's that are included as examples.

    4 out of 5 stars SellPhotos.com.......2003-03-17

This book has alot of information to help the novice get started in the right direction. There are several tips and points that can help almost anyone get started in Stock Photography.

A major problem that I have with the book; some of the information is dated. The technology is mid to late 90's and several of the links in the book used as examples are broken URL's (they don't work)

5 out of 5 stars Author shares enthusiasm and experience.......2001-09-10

This is a wonderful combination of enthusiasm and practical advice. He is like a kind uncle who wants to show you his favorite subject and help you decide how to make your own version of photography work.

                      Book Description

Though women put up with a lot of stress and go through a lot of aggravation in a lifetime, Pat Hancock has shown with Bras, Pantyhose, and Hugs that they are not doing it alone. Her humor and down-home wisdom from life's experiences enlighten, encourage, and lift the spirits of all who deal with and love women. Ranging from admitting her age, to giving advice to men, to touting the woes of bra-wearing and leg-shaving, Hancock hits upon many of the stress-inducing events and chapters in almost every woman's life. "In the '60s, some women burned their bras. This gesture was somehow a way of thumbing their noses at men and the establishment. I never really understood how being free and floppy in public made life better for women everywhere." Bras, Pantyhose, and Hugs will make you smile or drop a tear, but you will walk away from reading it with a new sense of self and possibilities.

                          Book Description

Before coming to national attention for his novel Sister Carrie, Theodore Dreiser worked for nearly a decade as a magazine editor and freelance writer. In this volume, liberally seasoned with period illustrations, Yoshinobu Hakutani has collected and annotated a rich selection of Dreiser's early writings on the cultural milieu of his day.

In these brief essays, Dreiser sallies into the vibrant world of creative work in turn-of-the-century America. He inspects the eccentric and revealing paraphernalia of artists' studios, probes the work habits of writers, and goes behind the scenes in the popular song-writing business, where this week's celebrity is next week's has-been. He notes the proliferation of organizations such as the Camera Club of New York and the American Water-Color Society and profiles or interviews famous figures such as Alfred Stieglitz, William Dean Howells, and the legendary impresario Major James Burton Pond. He also introduces numerous women artists, novelists, and musicians, including the prolific and tireless Amelia Barr (mother of fourteen children and author of thirty-two novels), the illustrator Alice B. Stephens, and the opera singer Lillian Nordica. Hakutani's notes provide biographical detail on dozens of now-obscure individuals mentioned by Dreiser.

Bubbling up through Dreiser's observations and reflections are a keen curiosity about the creative process and a passion for identifying the peculiarly American spirit reflected in the young nation's artists and their work. These miniature portraits of the people who were the talk of the town at the turn of the century capture American culture at a moment when the United States was intent on demonstrating its ability to produce fine art and literature worthy of European models yet distinctively its own.

No matter the economic environment, there are ample reasons why you might be aching to change jobs or move up in the one you already have. In What to Do With the Rest of Your Life, career consultant Robin Ryan--who's offered her advice over the past 20 years to individual clients and through top broadcast and print outlets--shares the specifics that can help you do it right. Dividing her book into sections that focus on sequential steps in the process (figuring it out, moving on, staying put), she describes proven ways to determine your ideal job and workplace, land a job or launch a business and get paid appropriately, get promoted, get a raise, or take your own enterprise to a higher level. Virtually all of Ryan's suggestions will prove useful to one reader or another, as she explains in detail how to tap into the hidden job market--since some 85 percent of all positions are never directly advertised--via research "on the Internet, in the library, over telephones, and through conversations with colleagues, friends, and acquaintances." She also explains, based on interviews with 78 top executives, how "to help you get promoted no matter what level you're at or how big your organization is." --Howard Rothman

5 out of 5 stars Helped me improve my life with a nice new job.......2004-09-20

My kids are in the upper grades now so I faced a daunting task of return to a career I'd left 13 years ago. A friend loved her book, and recommended it highly. I found it inspired me to see that I indeed could make this change and prosper. I found this to be a practical guide -- useful, motivational, with terrific ideas on how to return to work, flourish, and make a good salary too. A valuable guidebook.

3 out of 5 stars Very "What color is your parachute-ish".......2003-06-09

Lots of the Robin's advice comes straight out of the job hunting bible of the past 2 decades "What color is your parachute" by Richard Bolles but still --- It's an excellent primer for the real thing, and summarizes a lot of what Richard Bolles preaches and teaches.

Because it is a quick an easy read, I suggest buying it cheap (or take it out of the library (sorry Amazon)), use it to whet your appetite for Bolles books, then begin collecting every edition you can get your hands on of "What color is your parachute" (every edition has something new in it). And try to get a hold of the audio book (I think he only put one out in 1995 - I wish he'd put one out every year!). It'll change your life and maybe mine too, cause maybe, just maybe, If everyone were to read Bolles books and truly understand the concepts I wouldn't have to deal with so many unhappy, bitter people at the work place.

5 out of 5 stars Learn From Someone Who Knows!.......2003-03-12

I highly recommend this insightful book to anyone who wants to improve their current job situation or consider a change altogether. It offers numerous options, ways to determine the best approach, and will continue to be a valuable resource for many years! Robin Ryans' realistic advice reflects her extensive and sought-after knowledge.

                                3 out of 5 stars Definitely worth a look.......2003-02-25

I gave the book three stars rather than four or five because it doesn't deliver what the title promises and the cover is all hype -- but the book does deliver some very worthwhile guidance.

What to Do (WTD) will be best suited to the midlife career changer with valuable skills -- self-motivated folks who just need direction. I like the book's down-to-earth no-nonsense tone.

                                Good parts:
List of career-killers -- not new to anyone who's been out in the world, but well-stated and worth reviewing
Discussion of interviewing for information and network: very realistic
Discussion of internet job search is right on!
Discussion of starting a business is better than average (but I like my own "are you ready" checklist better!)
                                Salary negotiations section is excellent

                                Weak parts:
Self-assessment (lists of values and skills were very ordinary and won't be helpful to most)
Recommendation to take tests: rarely useful for mid-career managers or professionals
Relocation section: My book on this topic, Making the Big Move, is two hundred pages long -- two pages can't do justice to the topic and may be misleading.

I wish the author had focused more on interview and resume strategies; interestingly, she does not include a discussion of resumes at all. I suspect that her strength lies in the nuts-and-bolts of job search and I wish she had included more on those topics.

I had to smile when I read her section on how to find a career counselor. Everyone who writes a book includes a list of "must have" qualifications for an advisor and, amazingly, those qualifications are all held by the author!
With a degree in counseling, this author urges us to find a vocational counselor. However, vocational counseling experience helps younger job seekers. Midlife, mid-career professionals need different sources of help. Recent books that target this market tend to be written by experienced professionals who have advanced degrees and life experience.

There are valuable nuggets here and I wish the author would write a meaty book, based on what she knows well, rather than an overview that is too sketchy in some places to be a useful guide.

5 out of 5 stars What any eye opener --buy this book.......2002-10-26

I heard the author on the radio and was quite impressed. Then I read her book and am convinced everyone who cares about their career needs to read this masterpiece. It's insightful & inspiring but has the specifics on direction that most books on uncovering your passion seem to lack. I wanted to do something I enjoyed more without having to take a big salary cut. In fact, Ms. Ryan showed me how to get a new job that's a promotion with a BIG raise attached to it. Ms. Ryan is a wealth of ideas on how to prosper and find the meaning that was lacking at work. You'll be amazed at how easy it is to make a career change if you follow her sage advice. I'm happier and making thousands more because this lady really knows her stuff. My advise to you is buy it, use it & prosper.

                                Book Description

In the late 1950s the Soviet Union shocked the world by placing a small satellite—Sputnik—in orbit around the earth. Treated as a technological Pearl Harbor in the United States, the Russian achievement prompted the federal government to create a civilian organization, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, to manage the American space program. By April 1959, NASA had selected seven military test pilots to serve as the country's first astronauts in the race with the Soviets to see who could put the first human in space. One of the seven Americans picked for this ambitious effort came from the small southern Indiana community of Mitchell. Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom would go on to become the first man to fly in space twice and to give his life in NASA's attempt to meet President John F. Kennedy's goal of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely home by the end of the 1960s.

In this second volume in the Indiana Historical Society Press's Indiana Biography Series, Hoosier historian and writer Ray E. Boomhower explores Grissom's life, from his days as a child playing in the forests of nearby Spring Mill State Park to his service as a combat pilot flying missions against Communist opponents in the skies over Korea. He also delves into the process by which NASA selected its original seven Mercury astronauts, the jostling for position to be the first American in space, and Grissom's near-fatal Liberty Bell 7 flight that haunted his subsequent space career.

After almost drowning when the hatch malfunctioned on his Mercury flight, Grissom resurrected his reputation through determination and his careful work with the space agency's Gemini program. The Hoosier astronaut made such a mark on the program that fellow astronauts nicknamed the Gemini spacecraft the Gusmobile. Grissom continued to be the astronaut NASA turned to when testing new spacecraft for the Apollo moon program. On January 27, 1967, Grissom, along with crew members Ed White and Roger Chaffee, died when a fire swept through their Apollo command module during a supposedly safe test on the ground at Cape Kennedy's Launch Complex 34. The astronaut's story continues after his death, however, most recently with the discovery and raising of the Liberty Bell 7 from its resting place on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.

5 out of 5 stars Gus Grissom: The Lost Astronaut.......2007-09-27

I hope all of those who saw "The Right Stuff" and based their opinions of Gus Grissom on that movie/book, read THIS one. Grissom was the best pilot (and I am a huge Chuck Yeager fan) and an all around good guy. I was so glad when the Liberty Bell was brought to the surface and people finally knew what this book tells the reader, and those of us who had faith in Gus all along already knew. He did NOTHING WRONG when his spacecraft sank. Having seen the Apollo Launch pad where Grissom, White and Chafee died, mourned along with the rest of the nation when the fire happened, and the memorial in Arlington, it was great to read this biography and bring Gus back for a little while. Certainly one of America's and Indiana's finest! A good book about a great man.

                                3 out of 5 stars Well-Intentioned but Falls Short.......2007-07-03

There's no doubt that Gus Grissom was an American Hero. There's no doubt that he was often maligned -- both during his life and even after his tragic death -- most notably by Tom Wolfe's depiction of Grissom in "The Right Stuff". There is also no doubt, though, that Grissom is a favorite son of Indiana (righfully so). But given that this biography is part of the "Indiana Biography Series", I believe it may go too far in attempting to vindicate Grissom and give him the credit he deserves. While the book is interesting and has some information and insight that I've not read elsewhere, I always prefer a biography to "give it to me straight", and I think this one goes a bit too far in its praise for Grissom to be considered the "straight" story. I think Ray Boomhower was well-intentioned in this effort (and as previously mentioned, I agree that Grissom deserves more than history has given him), but this probably isn't the best book for a fair and unbiased education on the life of Gus Grissom.

4 out of 5 stars Boomhower: The Lost Opportunity.......2007-01-31

Virgil "Gus" Grissom is most commonly remembered by casual "space historians", as the only Mercury Astronaut to lose his spacecraft and for his death along with Robert Chafee and Edward White in the Apollo 1 fire. Most of these same historians think of him as a bit of a screwup as well, who may have been responsible for the loss of Friendship 7, when he in a panicked state blew the hatch while most of the spacecraft was still submerged, but for the loss of Apollo 1 as well due his insistence on not using explosive hatch bolts in later NASA programs such as Gemini and Apollo. The theory being that if NASA had developed the Apollo spacecraft with the explosive hatch, Grissom, Chafee, and White would have been able to blow the hatch and escape the fire which killed them. A minority of these folks even go so far as to blame him for the fire itself, saying that it was his movements which caused wires to short and to start the fire that killed the three of them.

A more dedicated researcher however finds himself quickly at odds with these assumptions. If Grissom was the screwup the majority of people seem to think he was, then why did NASA not only select him to be the second American in space, but listened to his input to the point that they incorporated so many of his design idea's and requirements into the Gemini program that other astronauts referred to the spacecraft as the "Gusmobile" and complained that the spacecraft were tailored to fit his 5'6 140 pound frame, or why was he on the fast track to become the first American to walk on the moon? The logical conclusion is that Grissom wasn't the screw up people thought him to be. The problem facing the dedicated researcher is the lack of compiled information about Virgil Grissom.

Yes, the data exists in various forms, but due to his untimely death (which results in the loss of any direct autobiographical information) and the common perception that he was a screwup no one had much interest in gathering all this information and putting it in one place.

For Christmas last year among the stack of books that was so tall and so heavy I nearly broke a bone when I stubbed my toe against it, was a copy of Boomhower's "Gus Grissom - The Lost Astronaut", a part of the Indiana Biography Series.

First, a word about Astronaut histories, be they biographies or autobiographies.

Its often said, about the Mercury 7, that they were made heros before they had ever done anything. This statement has always bothered me, because these men were heroes long before they were selected to the space program. Six of them were combat veterans, most of them were combat aces (five or more confirmed kills) and some of them were double aces, having earned five or more kills in both World War II and Korea. Each of them had also been a test pilot, where they strapped themselves into several tons of experminental steel, weapons, and jet fuel and took the skies with the intention of breaking their aircraft. Most of them served as pilot instructors at some point in their careers meaning they strapped themselves into several tons of steel, weapons, and jet fuel and took to the skies with a guy who knew next to nothing about what they were doing. Some of them took it one step further and became instructors at test pilot school.

All of them, were college graduates and many of them held multiple degrees and in the course of their career published doctorate level papers about the nature of flight, weapons, carrier landings, and combat operations long before they were ever accepted into the space program.

In other words, "Pretty damn big hero stuff".

The problem is, these "pretty damn big heroes" came with some pretty damn big ego's. Each of them thought they were the best (or in the case of Alan Shepard, knew they were the best) and as a result biographies (and autobiographies in particular) tend to be strongly slanted in favor of the subject. This slant is compounded by the sanitized "Life" coverage of the Astronauts and their stories, with the result being anyone who spends any time reading these books will find conflicting accounts of stories and events, where each Astronaut sees himself as the hero or the center piece of the story being told.

The biographer's job (or the ghost writer in the case of many of the autobiographies) is not to eliminate or even minimize this slant, but should be to remove those stories which conflict with factual, and confirmable data.

For example, who came up with the idea to wire Ralph Morse's jeep with a smoke flare1? Alan Shepard or Gus Grissom? The answer is, that in the context of other events it doesn't matter. That the even occurred is far more relevant than who's idea it was.

Compare that with the question of "Who was the first American in space?" John Glenn's biography ("John Glenn: A Memoir") leaves you with the impression that he was. The reality is that while Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth he was actually the third American into space, behind Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom.

It is this second type of slant that should be unacceptable and is the reason why I've never managed to struggle all the way through Wolfe's "The Right Stuff" (either the book or the movie), Cooper's "Leap of Faith", and M. Scott Carpenter's "For Spacious Skies".

That said, I looked forward to Boomhower's book since it came out in 2004 and was very pleased to find it under the tree this Christmas.

I can't help but feeling a bit disappointed with the book. Boomhower spends most of the preface talking not about Grissom or his family but about himself, his family's distant ties to the space program and how much effort he put into writing the book. The first three chapters are devoted, or rather would be seemingly devoted to Grissom's life before joining NASA if Boomhower didn't spend so much time skipping around in the timeline. He addresses events out of order, skips back, skips forward, and often leaves you with the impression that events in Grissom's life tied in with key events in history, when in fact the events were separated by years. It makes it tough to keep everything straight.

Boomhower also uses other astronaut biographies as source material, something that should be obviously dangerous given the super charged egos involved.

That said, I do feel like I know more about Gus Grissom5 than I did before I started reading...I do not feel like I know Gus Grissom like I knew Shepard after reading "Light this Candle" or like I knew Pete Conrad after reading "Rocket Man". After reading those books, I felt like Shepard and Conrad were old friends, after reading "Gus Grissom: The Lost Astronaut" I feel Grissom is like that second cousin third removed on your step mothers side...

If you've never read much about America's space race during the 60's, this is a good read with a lot of solid history and the story of a man who gave his life for his country.

If, however, you are knowledgeable about this era the book adds little insight into Gus Grissom that hasn't already been published. The best source for this insight, Betty Grissom, was interviewed for this book but it appears nothing new was brought to light. With that said, I understand and respect her right to keep certain aspects of his life private. BTW: Her book "Starfall" was outstanding - I learned much more about Gus Grissom from that than any other source. It's a shame it's out of print.

Regardless, I bought it, it's now in my collection and am glad that I did.

This book is a very quick read. It contains some interesting stories. The comments of Grissom's sons, brothers, parents, and childhood friends shed some light on his true personality. The book does not dwell on Grissom's two spaceflights and death during a test. Instead, the narration focuses on his life journey to those public milestones.

                                  Book Description

This historical guide retells, in graphic detail, the story of nine of the most important battles to be fought in Scotland south of the Highland Line, stretching from Aberdeen to the Firth of Clyde. The battles range from medieval period to the time of Jacobite Rebellion. They show how weapons andequipment, tactics and strategy, and the make up of the armies themselves changed over the course of almost 500 years. By concentrating on these nine battles Stuart Reid provides a concise, coherent account of Scottish military history, and he presents detailed reassessments of each battle in the light of the very latest research. His book is fascinating introduction to Scottish military history and an essential guide for readers who are keen to explore these battle sites for themselves.

Three of the battles belong to the medieval period and Scotland's fight to establish and maintain its independence from England - Wallace's victory at Stirling Bridge in 1296, Bruce's even greater victory at Bannockburn in 1314 and then, at the end of the period, the crushing defeat at Pinkie in1547. Three more battles belong to the bloody civil wars of the seventeenth century - Montrose's great victory at Kilsyth in August 1645, Cromwell's triumph at the Battle of Dunbar in 1650 and the short, bloody action at Inverkeithing that followed. Finally for the Jacobite period the trilogy covers Sherriffmuir 1715, Prestonpans 1745 and the conclusive encounter at Falkirk 1746.

By skillful use of maps, diagrams and photographs the author explains the complex, sometimes puzzling sequence of events that make these encounters so fascinating. He provides a detailed tour of each battleground as it appears to the visitor in the present day and rediscovers the lanes and by-ways tramped by soldiers hundreds of years ago.

Michener's compilation of short stories arrayed around the dreamer in all of us who lust over south seas lore, whether we have lived there or perhaps never even visited. These are stories rich in visual majesty, and the human ambition, drive, and misadventure, which the lucky few of us have actually lived.

4 out of 5 stars "Wherever you go, there you are".......2006-04-09

"Tales of the South Pacific" with protagonists you can love to hate? That's what I was expecting when I picked this book up, since I'm a Michener fan from back far enough so I had to use my mother's library card to check out his books (for some strange reason the Children's Room librarian wouldn't let me have them!). On that level - whether or not this volume of true stories met my expectations - I'm disappointed. I'm not sure if it's because of the co-author's influence on Michener's style, but that definitely could be it. There's a certain academic dryness here that I don't remember from any other Michener work. Or is it because the people depicted are just so unremittingly BAD that spending time with them isn't fun?

In any case, these are well-researched chronicles of the lives of some through-and-through rascals who did their evil deeds from the 16th Century through the first part of the 20th. There's plenty of irony, plenty of historical detail, and plenty of adventure. I found it depressing, but I recognize that as a personal reaction. Its premise, pointed out by the authors at the book's beginning, is definitely borne out: the "refuge" so many men and women have sought, and continue to seek, in Polynesia just isn't there to find. "Wherever you go, there you are?" So very true - and I must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed recognizing some of the true stories on which elements of Michener's beloved novel "Hawaii" are based.

Michener and his partner, South Pacific expert A. Grove Day, tell a wild variety of stories from the horror of the Globe Mutinity to the incredible adventures of Coxinga, pirate of the South Pacific. If you want to know the true story of Captain Bligh, the man of mutinies, you'll find there's much more to the story than in the movies.
The theme here is that for centuries civilized man has dreamed of island life with beautiful willing women and few rules or responsibilities. This book shows the folly and tragedy of many and the luck and fortune of some who made it work. I have read most of these stories multiple times and find this a book that remains interesting. As always, Michener is well researched and quite compelling.

2 out of 5 stars Those dirty rascals!.......2004-03-25

Michener and Day attempt to delight us with a collection of short stories of eccentric and sometimes deceptive real life characters who roamed the South Pacific throughout history. Any one of these characters would have made for the excellent basis of a full-length novel. Dear reader is entertained by the tales of some and bored by others. Take your pick. In short, this is a wonderful book to enjoy when one has either a short attention span or time to read only in short bursts.

The most prolific portion of the book is the introduction, where Michener explains the general feeling of any United States citizen. It was written when the atomic age was in full-scale crisis. Nuclear arms were being amassed at a frightening pace and seemingly tempramental political world leaders had their fingers all too close to the launch button. Michener explains that some Americans dreamed of escaping to the safe, care-free life of the South Pacific during a most perilous time in world history, just as his eccentric and unsavory characters in history have done.
