        Book Description

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between an ordinary woman and a proper Southern lady? "A Proper Southern Lady" covers everything from "abide" to "zero tolerance" teaching all how ladies in the South have cultivated the art of manners and style to show the world how "rite we've been raised".

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as Ronda Rich's book.......2007-03-08

I am sure the author has the best intentions at heart when she was writing this book. However, this book does not talk about proper southern women. Instead what it describes are country girls. There is a big difference between southern women and country women. Southern women do not say certain phrases that she says by leaving off parts of the word. She almost tries to make being a proper southern woman into being a country bumpkin with manners. I am southern through and through my family is from North Carolina and fought in the Revolutionary War - I do know a thing or two about being southern. A southern lady carries herself very differently than a mere wallflower as this author seems to think of southern women, bless her heart. She does not do southern women justice in the way she describes us, think about it can you imagine Scarlet O'Hara sitting back at a party and wanting to blend in? No, probably not. The author does touch on certain aspects of southern women that are true but these seemed to be forced out of her and as if she didn't fully know how to explain what it meant. I would by Ronda Rich's book called "What Southern Women Know : That Every Woman Should."

5 out of 5 stars Ladies--Don't miss an opportunity to uplift your spirits!.......2006-01-28

An excellent choice if you want to be educated, uplifted, humored and reminded about your deep southern roots. You will laugh, you will feel proud, you will have a heartfelt moment, then you will laugh again. Not a southerner? Read it to have a better understanding of how family and traditions live on through the hearts and minds of each generation in the south. Read it for entertainment as well as knowledge. Most of all, read it, think about it, and just enjoy it! I highly recommend this book for "ladies" of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Horror over the whole world.......2005-02-28

Everyone is afraid of something. No matter where they are in the world, no matter what culture, people know that there is something lurking around the shadows, creeping under the bed. Every culture's creative expression is ripe with these specific horrors, including painting, novels, poetry, plays and, of course, film. If a civilization has access to a movie camera, they will make a horror flick.

"Fear Without Frontiers" is a guided tour of this world horror-fest. Traveling from Spain to Hong Kong to France to Singapore to Japan to India to Italy to...well, pretty much everywhere, the various authors showcase the horror-film culture and history of these respective countries. Your tour guides through this atrocity exhibition are an elite group of film scholars, professors of film studies, film historians and other academic film professionals. This is no fan book.

Sometimes focusing on an individual creator, such as Brazil's Jose Mojica Marins ("Coffin Joe") or Hong Kong's Anthony Wong ("The Untold Story,") and sometimes a phenomenon, such as Singapore's Pontianak films and Italy's Zombie obsession, each entry is an incredibly well-researched and intelligent exposition of the subject matter. Each article is footnoted and referenced, leading the way to other books and journal articles on the same subject matter. The amount of information is truly staggering, and I would have never have guessed that there was an expert on Indonesian snake-woman films.

While each country gets a fair showing, Japan gets a special "case study," with three articles on different aspects of Japanese horror cinema. There is an article/interview with Miike Takashi ("Ichi the Killer," "Audition,") an exploration of two popular horror cycles, the "Ring" films and the "Eko Eko Azarak" series, and a look at the modern shocker "Suicide Circle" along with an interview with director Sion Sono.

What is missing from "Fear Without Frontiers" is a cross-examination of the various world horror-cultures. Although the Vampire film is fairly universal, there is no comparison of a Turkish vampire film with an Italian or French vampire film. Each entry is an isolated event, having no relation to previous entries.

This one flaw accounted for, "Fear Without Frontiers" is an amazing book, of great interest to anyone interested in horror films and/or world cinema. The sheer variety of things-that-go-bump-in-the-night is fascinating, as are the laws and censors that shape how these fears can be expressed on film.

5 out of 5 stars tremendous international horror information.......2004-04-01

Horror is the only true international genre. The fear of evil knows no borders. Mr. Schneider my be the only true international horror expert around. He's constantly digging up old films from the past from the tiniest country to find what kind of fear factor they might have had. This specific book is a grand collection of significant horror films from almost every major country. It speaks volumes about the different insecurities that lie between different nations. There is a wealth of grisly photos for the serious horror buff but also an abundance of educational information for the intellectual horror fan. If you want to know what the horror genre truly means and stands for, this is the book to get.

          Book Description

This book is the first to be devoted to the music of Stravinsky’s last compositional period. In the early 1950s, Stravinsky’s compositional style began to change and evolve with astonishing rapidity. He abandoned the musical neoclassicism to which he had been committed for the preceding three decades and, with the stimulus provided by his newly gained knowledge of the music of Schoenberg and Webern, launched himself on a remarkable voyage of compositional discovery. The book focuses on five historical, analytical, and interpretive issues: Stravinsky’s relationship to his serial predecessors and contemporaries; his compositional process; the problem of creating formal continuity in a repertoire so obviously discontinuous in so many ways; the problem of writing serial harmony; and the problem of expression and meaning. Challenging conventional interpretations, the book shows that Stravinsky’s serial music is not only of great historical significance, but also of astonishing structural originality and emotional power.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book... and easy to understand!.......2003-02-28

As a high school chess coach, this is the greatest book on chess that I have ever found. It unfolds like a "choose your own adventure" book, with the reader analyzing a scenario, and making a "move" by turning to a certain page. That page explains why the move was correct, or why it wasn't, in detail so that the reader can understand the strategy behind the reasoning. I picked this book up ...on sale... and immediately bought 5 more for my team! Buy this if you can find it!

5 out of 5 stars Utterly brilliant gem of a book........2002-02-20

I own 300+ chess books, and this one is my absolute favorite. To give you an idea of others in my top 10: The Amateur's Mind by Silman, Middlegame Planning by Romanvosky, My System, 300 Chess Games by Tarrasch, Grandmaster of Chess by Keres, Alekhine's Best Games. My version of "The Game of Chess," by Lasker (which has been re-named The Complete Chess Self-Tutor in this new edition) is from 1972 (I am not famililar with the edition that is currently in print but I understand it to be superb). This book is an utterly brilliant (and very demanding) chess course. It uses a unique method of instruction. The reader is given some textual introduction to a problem, and then is presented with three options for moves to pick. Depending on which option you pick, you are referred to a different section of the book. That new section will tell you if you picked the best move. If you picked the wrong move, it referes you back to try another choice. But even on the wrong choices, Lasker goes to great lengths explaining to exactly why it is not the best move. He presents variations of likely scenarios to make his point. He does this in a style that instructs, enlightens, and informs, always referring you to general principles to follow. Then, when you finally pick the right answer, you are presented with the next problem, which logically follows from the prior one. As a result, you gradually work your way through the book. There are large sections on the opening, the middlegame, and the end game. This is the greatest chess instruction book I have ever seen. Unlike so many chess masters, Lasker is a brilliant writer as well. His style is articulate, patient, and comprehensive. He does not "dumb-down" to you, but presents things more clearly than I have ever seen in the whole history of chess literature. He published this book when he was 84 years old! It has the feel that he wanted to sum up his life's work in chess in a manner that would leave a legacy to the aspiring player. Well, he did an amazing thing for chess players: he poured himself into this work with a sincerity and devotion that is unparallelled in chess history. His career was so long that he played against Em. Lasker, Capablanca, Nimzowitsch, and Alkehine, and here he is analyzing Bobby Fischer's famous 5. 0-0! in the Exchange Variation of the Ruy Lopez. Lasker is the Bertrand Russell of chess: a man who lived for 95 years, who saw the richest epoch in the development of chess, and who knew how to assimilate it and summarize it in an instructional format that would be of maximum value to the student. This is that rare work that demands hard work of the student, but constantly inspires you to continue tackling it. You will emerge from its hallowed pages a far stronger player. This is a stupendous work, that for some reason is almost unknown. If I had one book to take to a desert island, it would be this one. I could go on and on, but you get the point. Get the book!

I first read a book written by Mundis when looking for help with my cronic writer's block, and while his system didn't produce an instant cure it continues to give me a bit of understanding and support for times when the pen won't write and the keys won't move. Like many writers Mundis confesses to periods of ineritia, and underactivity, and uses the 12 Steps to help guide the underemployed and underpaid to rightful livelihood. This is not an business book in the strict sense, he's more a kindly godfather whispering good advice, and dishing out the daily chores for making a living. If you wonder why your friends always seem to have more, why raises never come to you and why you are always starting over, the answers are here; and the advice is reasonable even for people adverse or unwilling to do a 12 Step program,

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on prospering.......1999-05-11

This book changed the way I look at money. I started making more money one week after starting to read this book. I have made substantally more money each and every year since.

4 out of 5 stars How to earn the wealth you deserve!.......1999-03-09

Mundis should be applauded - many of us can save, even invest, but really are not earning our true potential. Mundis begins by telling us his own story, showing us that he had a real underearning problem, but was able to conquer it. What impressed me most are his three big 'rules', such as NEVER turn down money, etc. They have helped me immensely in my own life. Also, he forces us to really take a look at how we look at money; many of us have beliefs that are really killing us financially and must be changed. A well-written, extremely helpful handbook on a problem which I just have not seen written about elsewhere.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the better books covering the Presidents.......2007-05-02

We have been truly blessed with good men in the White House. Through the brilliant Constitution our founding fathers set up for our republic we emerged a country for all nations to envy. Through checks and balances we have created a system that works; it is at times not perfect, but there is none better.

Like any history book, "American Presidents" should not be used alone. It can not fulfill the task of evaluating the office of each of these men on its own. The author covers in detail each President's life growing up, offices held, as the executive and his achievements after the Oval Office. The vice president's, the cabinet, and historical sites are found at the end of the book. Photos are displaced throughout. One of the better books covering the Presidents.

I became increasingly interested in our Presidents, so I decide to research each one further, going as far as rating them. This is nothing new; there have been many such ratings done by scholars and intellectuals over the years. Of course I am neither. But I do find the ratings systems tend to focus on single merits and not the whole presidency. I have decided to do my own rating through these recourses:

          "The American Presidents"-----Whitney
"A Patriot's History of the U.S."-----Schweikart and Allen
"The Oxford Companion to U.S. History"-----Boyer
"The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History"-----Woods
          "Character"-----Wallace
          "A Republic Not An Empire"-----Buchanan
          and other misc. books

There is no way to fully list all of the positives and negatives of each Presidency. I have compiled a list of just a few of the important issues, then rated each according to the overall effect on the nation and the world. I admit bias cannot be removed totally. There will be some who will completely disagree with my system. You will find that I have lowered some who have been praised as great leaders and raised others that have been overlooked.

It can be hard to compare a Washington to a Bush, because these men lived at different times. The state of affairs and who they followed will have a major impact. I added W. Bush with reservation. His rating, along with the others are subject to change over time. In some cases I have added the same issue or attribute in both the pro and con column. Enjoy, take your time and feel free to comment:

After I copied and pasted I realized I could not fit the pros and cons on Amazon, so I deleted them. If any of you wish to have them you can write to me.

5 out of 5 stars THE AMERICAN PRESIDENTS.......2006-01-15

THIS IS A WONDERFUL OVERVIEW OF THE AMERICAN PRESIDENTS, AND QUITE ACCURATE. I HAVE READ BIOGRAPHIES OF MOST PRESIDENTS, VISITED MOST PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARIES, AND THOUGHT DAVID WHITNEY DID A GREAT JOB ON THIS SERIES.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2004-01-19

This is an excellent book. It is great for people beginning to learn about American politics. It's a great source for quick handy reminders. It's a great gift. ( I bought seven copies for that reason). This would be a great book for teachers to have their high school students study.
While it is not possible to have one book completely cover all the Presidents, this single volumn outlines many important events.
There is an index in the back for quick searches.
          Political views?
I have heard people claim this book is written with a Republican slant, and other claim it's written with a Democratic slant!
Using the above paragraph, one would have to think it was pretty fairly written.
I have went back to this book more often, during the election season, to brief my memory.

As a single volumn book; I repeat, this is an excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Scholarly accuracy and appealing informality.......2003-04-19

U.S. history, the government, and personae of American Presidents is a fascinating subject. While many scholarly work in the market have done in-depth investigation to profile American presidents, this title by David C Whitney and Robin Vaughn Whitney in its 9th edition from Reader's Digest is classically written and readily accessible to the general audience. Its objectivity and candor serves well as a gentle and educational introduction, an abridged version, on the development of American Presidents in relation to the unfolding drama of U.S. history.

The perennial best-seller, an enjoyable reading, excels in its elegance and clarity in comparison to many (auto)biographies of modern day C(orporate)EO/leadership titles.

            5 out of 5 stars A REAL READING TREAT!.......2002-07-30

No one could possibly take The New Yorker, National Geographic, Rolling Stone, Esquire,The American Scholar, the Atlantic Monthly, GQ, Time, Gourmet, Harper's and Vanity Fair and read all the stories in them every month for a year. But what if the greatest experts, The American Society of Magazine Editors read 1,586 stories and picked just the best 17 of them for you to read. Even if you didn't think you'd like the subject, you will love reading each and every one of these. I'm using it for a seminar I'm giving -- one article and its author to discuss each week for 14 weeks. It's Terrific!!!

            5 out of 5 stars Shockingly Good.......2001-12-19

It's a long book, so I thought it would last. No such luck. The writing is simply amazing, across the board. Buy it, enjoy it.

            4 out of 5 stars ........2001-12-17

For anyone who enjoys feature writing and investigative journalism this is an excellent read. I have made it through 9 of the 17 stories and have thoroughly enjoyed 8 of them. The topics are broad (John McCain, seal hunting in Greenland, a fat wine critic, campaign finance reform and many more.) The writing is so good that even topics that usually bore me (wine for one) became interesting.

5 out of 5 stars This is a book worth reading.......2001-12-01

No matter who you are, what your interests or where your political affiliations lie, if you enjoy reading good writing, you will enjoy this book. It represents some of the tightest, best researched and most insightful writing of a year's worth of magazine articles. The magazines in which the articles were originally published range from The Atlantic Monthly to Zoetrope: All-Story (did they include the ends of the alphabet for such a sentence as this?). The subjects, writing styles and tones of the stories smatter widely, but have in common one thing: they are stories worth your while. You could be forced to walk, sit and suffer with John McCain through his torturous 5-year imprisonment in a North Vietnamese p.o.w. camp, as well as with the cast of characters behind one week of McCain's presidential campaign tour. You could bask in the glory of Bob Parker, a burly, middle-aged Maryland guy whose freakishly acute sense of smell, coupled with his rigid integrity, led to his publication of The Wine Advocate and the author's well-founded claim that Parker may be "single-handedly changing the history of wine." The book is replete with the end product of authors whose diligence, sensitivity and dexterity with the English language have culminated in some rock-solid reading.

A book that appeals to amateurs and twitchers alike - serious and coffeetable at the same time. Volume II was published when I was living in PNG in 1990 and still brings back the thrill of birds of paradise in the wild, but we should not forget the parrots, fruit doves and goura pigeons. Colour and form like nothing, and nowhere, else on earth.

The definitive book - let us hope that in 100 years time it is not just the book that is left!

The two volumes by B. Coates are a true delight for the bird fancier. A large amount in information on generally little known species is accompanied by a wealth of illustrations of great quality and interest (the fuzziest ones just add to the feeling of rarity of the scenes they depict). The island of New Guinea arguably represents the biggest expanse of largely untouched rainforest left on earth, it is therefore crucial that the biological richness of this region be known to the public before it is too late, and Coates's books are a substantial contribution to this task.
