BEEKCAKE: THE MUSCLE MAGAZINES OF AMERICA ought to be reprinted. It is an essential read for those interested in the contruction of the gay male form/ideal. BEEFCAKE takes a look at the history of "the beefcake." Simply defined, the beefcake is a male who is physically built--a bodybuilder or perhaps an Abercrombie and Fitch male model. What I found interesting is the beefcake ideal emerged alongside photography, the most popular mode of getting beefcake images to the masses. Also interesting is the how the homoerotic images of the male beefcake form in the early 1900s weren't automatically linked to homosexuality. Yes, the images were homoerotic, but the target audience were straight men. It was only later that the gay factor came into play in such publications such as Physique Pictorial and Tomorrow's Man, which still targeted straight men, yet pushed the homosocial/erotic boundaries of the men being photographed. The strength of this book not only lies in the history and research of the beefcake, but also the photographs included. The beefcake is everywhere in popular culture today (in GQ, Mens Health, and other body-building magazines); he's everywhere in gay male culture too. BEEFCAKE offers readers an invaluable insight to the standards of male beauty through the eyes of both straight and gay men as seen in print/visual media.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific collection of cartoon humor........2000-03-03

Rick Detorie's One Big Happy provides fun cartoons featuring kids and adults and one precocious child 'Ruthie' whose pointed observations are sometimes all too acid. Reminiscent of Dennis the Menace but with more social observation, these strips are intriguing and fun.

5 out of 5 stars One Big Happy: Nice Costs Extra!.......1999-12-26

If, according to Rick DeTorie, Nice Cost Extra!, his latest collection is priceless! This book is 127 pages (and a great cover) of laugh out loud fun. Every one in my family, from my wife to my teenage son to my 11 year old twins, and even their Grandparents, find something to treasure in this book. Like anything of true value it transends generations. In a time when humor seems to be based on how shocking one can be, it is a true blessing to find someone as brilliant as Rick DeTorie and his always loveable characters. Considering the overuse these books receive in my house, we always end up buying another copy.

5 out of 5 stars This is a REAL family!.......1999-12-23

If you're looking for a truly funny comic strip that will make you laugh out loud without insulting your intelligence, you've gotta check out Rick Detorie's "One Big Happy"! Unlike a lot of "family" strips, this one actually seems to be based on real people. The adults are neither overly "goody-goody" nor bumbling idiots, and the kids aren't saccharine-sweet or smart-mouthed brats. Every character - Ruthie, Joe, Frank, Ellen, and the grandparents - is just like someone you know - or would like to know. I love this series!

5 out of 5 stars One Big Happy: Nice Costs Extra!.......1999-12-16

Another great One Big Happy book. I read it to my son every night, and it never fails to produce a laugh from both of us. Ruthie's antics are hilarious. Buy this book if you want to laugh. It's no wonder One Big Happy is the best comic strip in the LA Daily News.

            Book Description

It’s not just a street anymore—it’s a genre of its own, and it’s celebrated in Tom Shea’s Broadway’s Most Wanted™: The Top 10 Book of Dynamic Divas, Surefire Showstoppers, and Box-Office Busts. Part of Potomac's popular Most Wanted™ series, Broadway’s Most Wanted™ sings the praises of musical theater with a dash of whimsy thrown in. Shea honors those who have made musical theater what it is today—the good, the bad, and the ugly. Oh, the ugly! When a show hits gold, the world’s a wonderful place, but a bomb is just as precious and enjoyable in its own perverse way. With more than forty top-ten lists packed full of fun and facts, Shea shows you the best—and worst—that Broadway, off-Broadway, and the rest of the musical theater has to offer.

So while you learn about the amazing people behind the hit Bye Bye Birdie, including the incomparable Chita Rivera, you’ll also read about the ill-fated and laughable Bring Back Birdie, which quickly indicated why Broadway doesn’t do sequels (especially twenty years after the original). While chuckling over how Jimmy Durante and Ethel Merman bickered over top billing for 1936’s Red, Hot, and Blue—with the comical result of their names being written diagonally, crossing in an X—you’ll also find praise for Paul Ford, Stephen Sondheim’s rehearsal pianist, who helps the legendary composer bring his music to life. Musicals run the gamut of topics, and Shea waxes melodic on political, western, rock and roll, and comic-book musicals, plus so much more. They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway; Tom Shea shines just as brightly with Broadway’s Most Wanted™: The Top 10 Book of Dynamic Divas, Surefire Showstoppers, and Box-Office Busts.

This manual has evolved over the years, and while it extrapolates from the theories of Transformational/Transactional Leadership, it gets down to where the "rubber meets the road." This is leadership 101 in practical application with many real world examples inserted in key places to demonstrate that this is not just "hot air" to pump up some author's ego blimp. While this may be a military focused book, with a clear sense of situations (while not life threatening) one can interpolate the stressful leadership issues in a civilian context that can have dire personal economic consequences. This book will "Git 'er done!"

                                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-02-22

Reads just like the Army manuel we received in the military but in laymans terms.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2004-06-04

As the army's touchstone for leadership, The U.S. Army Leadership Field Manual stresses ethics, high moral character and the honorable refusal to obey unlawful orders. This volume makes you ask, "How could the prison abuse incidents in Iraq in 2004 have happened?" American army training repeatedly emphasizes moral leadership, character and integrity, as seen in this primary field manual of leadership, which is used by soldiers and officers everywhere. Read the principles that helped shape such leaders such as Marshall, Eisenhower, Schwarzkopf and Powell. You can employ many of their lessons of moral courage and determination in the corporate boardroom.
We highly recommend this very readable book for those who seek to put current events into clearer context and to make use of their lessons.

4 out of 5 stars Cheap and good.......2004-05-03

This book is very cheap. Just about the cheapest leadership book you can buy. But its valuable knowledge far exceeds its price. There is a reason why this book is used for mandatory leadership curriculum at West Point and virtually all military leadership training schools. It teaches soldier to 1)Be of strong ethical and moral character (loyalty, integrity, discipline) 2)Know valuable skills and knowledge (technical and personal) 3)Do utilize the leadership skills to make a difference.

There is a best selling book "Be, Know, Do" which relies heavily from this book as a source. I recommend buying this book instead because it is much cheaper and contains virtually all the information contained in that one.

I wish this book was thicker with even more useful information. The book could have expounded far more in detail, especially things related to interpersonal skills (communication and motivation). I know there is a wealth of psychological research on the subject of leadership which the book could have used for further enlightenment. But the book limits its focus only on its history and military leaders as a source.

Leadership is a deep and complex subject because it requires one to deeply understand oneself and the others. This book provides a solid basis.

"Soldiers represent what's best about the Army. Day in and day out, in the dark and in the mud and in faraway places, they execute tough missions whenever and wherever the Nation calls. They deserve our very best-leaders of character and competence who act to achieve excellence. That theme resounds throughout FM 22-100, Army Leadership, and echoes our time-honored principle of BE, KNOW, DO. This leadership manual lays out the framework that applies to all Army leaders-officer and NCO, military and civilian, active and reserve component. At the core of our leadership doctrine are the same Army Values embedded in our force: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage (LDRSHIP). The framework also outlines physical, mental, and emotional attributes that together with values form 'character'-what a leader must BE. Being a person of character is fundamental to the Army. What makes Army leaders of 'competence' are skills with people, ideas, things, and war-fighting. We refer to those four sets of skills as interpersonal, conceptual, technical, and tactical. Many are common to leaders in all situations; some additional skills are required for those who gain increasing responsibility. Leaders of character and competence are those with the appropriate skills, leaders who KNOW their people, their equipment, and their profession. All that is still not enough. We call on our leaders to translate character and competence into leader actions. Army Leaders influence people-by providing purpose, direction, and motivation-while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organization. Leaders inspire others toward common goals and never lose sight of the future even as they labor tirelessly for the demands of today. That is what we expect our leaders to DO."-From the Preface.

                                      Book Description

My Dear Mr. Stalin is the first publication that contains the complete correspondence between Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph V. Stalin. This collection of more than three hundred hot-war messages, never before fully available in any language, is an invaluable primary source for understanding the relationship that developed between these two great world leaders during a time of supreme world crisis.

The correspondence, secret at the time, begins with a letter Roosevelt wrote to Stalin offering aid to the Soviet Union following Hitler’s surprise attack in 1941. It ends with a message that was an attempt to minimize the differences between the two leaders, approved by Roosevelt only minutes before his death in 1945. The book traces the evolution of their unique relationship, revealing the statesmanship of the two men and their thinking about the grave events of their time. An informative introduction to the volume and generous annotations set the letters in context.

This is a really good resource book to have. A friend gave it to me as a gift, and jsut as I thought I already knew everything about WWII, this book surprises me with new facts straight from Stalin and Roosevelt themselves! The book guides you through each president's thought process and how they dance through political fires with wit and strategy. Roosevelt is much more fascinating now that I see how he thinks. I wished this book has some pictures I can refer to. That will be even better. Highly recommended if you want to read about 2 impt leaders and WWII.

If in content, not in tone, I completely agree with the review by Col. Szych. The story of the complete betrayal of the Polish nation is rarely taken up, and it is tremendous in its historical significance.

The list of material sent from US to Russia alone is facinating.
Long before Pearl Harbor we were in it up to our eyebrows. They were marching on our boots and behind our armour, but such a small sacrifice was asked of us by comparison----

US lost 405,000 of her people
                                      RUSSIA lost 27,000,000------that millions....
and then....that madman.....well, I hope you know the rest....

5 out of 5 stars In Black and White--the Betrayal of Poland.......2006-01-24

The review you posted by Publishers Weekly literally made me want to gag. This book is not a "history junkie's delight"; it is the essence of Poland's 50 year nightmare from 1939 to 1989.

As a retried U.S. military officer and Polish-American baby-boomer whose father fought at places like Iwo Jima during WWII, I have great interest in the betrayal of Poland during WWII. Anyone who knows about the Katyn Forest Massacre (done by Dear Mr. Stalin), the Warsaw Rising of 44 (when Dear Mr. Stalin refused to allow the Allies to come to the aid of the people of Warsaw) and the mass deportations and genocide against the Polish people, will be highly interested in this book.

A great percentage of the letters are about the "Polish Problem." And I am afraid the Polish Problem still exists today whereby people glorify the contributions of the Soviet Union led by a mass-murderer whilst at the same time being almost totally ignorant of the contributions of Poland to the defeat of Nazi Germany. The effectiveness and impact of Poles of the 1st Polish Armored Division, the two Polish Fighter Squadrons during the Battle of Britain, and the Poish heroics and sacrifices at places like Monte Cassino are either unknown or minimized. To this, add the contributions of hundreds of thousands of Polish Americans, sons and grandsons of Poland, like my father and more famous (maybe not so famous) Polish Americans like Col Gabreski and Lt Col Urban.

At Amazon.com, you stock books like "A Question of Honor" which should be read by all those who want to truly know what wartime misery is all about. Shame on anyone who tries to varnish or glorify the abject misery that Stalin (not Hitler) brought to his own people but especially to the Polish nation.

                                            Book Description

The first book to define the clear and present danger posed by a cyber-terrorist attack on the U.S. computer- and network-dependent infrastructure. The pages are packed with interviews from members of terrorist groups, including al-Qaida, as well as key insiders involved in planning and executing the U.S. plan for the defense of cyberspace, including Tom Ridge, James Gilmore, CIA and NSA officials--and even al-Qaeda supporters. Internet security expert Dan Verton investigates how cyber-terrorism could occur, what the global and financial implications are, the impact this is having and will continue to have on privacy and civil liberties, and how to prepare and prevent against cyber-terrorism.

5 out of 5 stars A Wake up call to all Americans.......2006-03-18

Before 9-11 This Book might not be looked at the same way it is today. Black Ice :The Invisible Threat of Cyber Terrororism brings around many misconceptions why an attack on our most important infrastructure could be carried out by Terrorists and not an Impossibilty. While This Book deals mostly with What if Scenerios, It also makes you think of things you thought were impossible. Take for example the sophistication of Hacking and Breaking into Our most Vital Systems. Terrorists know you must have training at a very high level and will Train Them at Schools in the U.S. Itself. Sound Familiar?
That's the sought of future thinking that this book will have you turning page after page and many ways o limit or stop a future attack on the internet. A great book with insightful information.

I have read this book and the reviews on Amazon.com. The author makes a good argument for enhanced cyber security in the USA. This is an issue that will be ignored by policy makers and the general public until an attack makes people pay attention to the realities of a computer controlled civilization. While other reviewers blast the writing style and hypothetical situations in the book it seems they have missed the point. It is not if a devastating cyber attack will occur, it is when.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful Look at the State of Infrastructure Security.......2005-02-06

Dan Verton, journalist and author of The Hacker Diaries: Confessions of Teenage Hackers, has written a very enlightening book in Black Ice: The Invisible Threat of Cyber-Terrorism.

The book begins with a fictitious attack that is multi-faceted and very well orchestrated. While it is somewhat sensationalist or alarmist, the point of the story is to show what is possible- not probable. Verton illustrates how cyber-attacks against key communications and critical infrastructure sites can be used in conjunction with conventional attacks to maximize the ensuing damage and confusion.

After capturing your attention with the story of what could be, Verton goes on to describe various government and private sector studies and disaster-preparedness exercises that have proven time and time again what a fragile state the infrastructure is in and how the domino effect of one area can cascade to take out entire regions.

One of the main points of the book is to show how the critical infrastructure is inter-dependent. If a main gas pipeline is destroyed, electrical power plants lose their source of energy. Once the electricity is shut down the telephone, cell phone, Internet and many other industries will shut down. Water treatment facilities will not be able to function. The list goes on and on.

This is an enlightening book that everyone should read. It is important for the powers that be to understand this domino effect and take steps to protect against cyber-terrorism of this sort.

5 out of 5 stars Page Turner That Kept Me Reading.......2004-05-05

This guy is among the best tech journalists out there and this book is proof. Nobody has documented the cyber-terrorist threat like this. And from the negative comments I've seen here on Amazon it is clear that those people didn't read the book or care to acknowledge the compelling nature of the argument.

If you're blind to the future, you won't be interested in reading this book or giving it any credit, and that's probably par for the course for you.

But if you are an independent thinker who understands the nature of the terrorist threat, you will want to read this book and you will undoubtedly benefit and learn something from it.

                                            5 out of 5 stars Terrific, high-quality investigative journalism.......2004-05-05

Without a doubt a book of monumental importance to the nation during this time of war and increased threat from terrorism. I recommend this book to anybody who is interested in homeland security and how terrorism may be changing and evolving its strategy against the U.S.

Well-written, full of intrigue and first-hand interviews with top security officials from both the Clinton and Bush administrations. Verton had unfettered access to those directly involved in the Sept. 11 response, including Richard Clarke.

You will not find another book on this subject that is this well researched and written. And because Verton is a journalist, he wrote this book so that you don't have to be a computer expert to understand the issues.

Buy this book. You will not be disappointed.
