On Adobe Affter Effects H.O.T........2006-02-28
This is a great guide to learning Adobe After Effects. Interactive and highly effective.
solid introduction.......2005-10-16
traditionally the Meyers books are considered the standard, but they're kind of dense, a lot to absorb, and they move through material a bit fast. If you're committed and hungry, then maybe they're what you want, but if you want a gentler beginning to build your confidence, I think you're better off starting with this book, and then taking on the Meyers books once you have a solid overall grounding. The difference in layout alone is plenty reason: this book has a lot more white space and breathing room, while the Meyers books are just crammed margin to margin, and feel smaller, even though they are the same size. Properly delivered, AE gives itself up wonderfully, but there's so much to it, you run the risk of overwhelm if it piles on too fast.
THE VERY BEST BOOK FOR "AFTER EFFECTS 6" PERIOD !!.......2005-07-18
I am a Production Manager for a major TV Station in the Southwest. This is by far the most comprehensive and informative step by step book on "Adobe After Effects" that I have ever read on the subject. Perfect if you are a beginner and working on MAC platform. If you are already familiar with previous versions of After Effects maybe you should look for a more technically advanced book. But if you are new to the subject you won't find a better book than this one. Period!
Truly a H.O.T. publication.......2005-03-26
Clearly the best tool for learning After Effects on the market. I have Total Training, Classroom In A Book, etc. None compare to this "hands on" tutorial. Very hard to put down.
Mac user only.......2005-03-21
While the author states that she is writting a cross platform book,
she ofter fails to explain the correct way of doing things on the Windows platform. The Windows user is left to figure it out on their own. The Windows user may find another title more suitable.

I'm very familiar with the Nutshell books, what my pal Van Wolverton calls "propellerhead books," or books for the nerds among us. This is appropriate because nerds appreciate brevity. On the other hand, Evil Geniuses in a Nutshell appreciates levity.
I was guessing that maybe the book was about crazy computer scientists. And, in a way, it is! But more accurately, Evil Geniuses in a Nutshell is a collection of the User Friendly cartoon strips, originally published on the Internet at http://www.userfriendly.org/. The fuzzy-headed-with-feet guy on the book's cover is Dust Puppy, the strip's mascot (who is apparently very popular among the propellerheads; a copy of him secretly appears in the game Quake III). Other characters, familiar to anyone who works in high tech, also appear in the comic strip, as well as various foreign agents, domestic spies, and what possibly could be parodies of well-known computer geeks.
The book is funny--the only Nutshell book I've ever laughed at. The illustrations were obviously done on a computer in some bitmap graphics application, but they aren't bad (and don't tell me they're stupid unless you've tried it; it is hard). The humor is often subtle, but I occasionally found myself bursting out laughing. Like Dilbert, Calvin and Hobbes, or even Married with Children, it takes a while to soak in the humor, but then it becomes addictive.
I recommend Evil Geniuses in a Nutshell if for no other reason than so you can have a truly funny computer book on your shelf. (Or in the WC, which is where I read it.) There is a follow-on called User Friendly the comic strip, also from O'Reilly. The more you're into technical things, the more you'll appreciate it. --Dan Gookin
Book Description
The follow-up to the highly successful first collection of User Friendly comic strips from O'Reilly & Associates, Evil Geniuses in a Nutshell tells the continuing tale of Columbia Internet, "the friendliest, hardest-working and most neurotic little Internet Service Provider in the world." Take three techs, two salespeople, a designer, two executives, a couple of administrative staff, mix in a mischievous Artificial Intelligence and a "dust puppy" born from the innards of a mega server, put them all together in a crowded little office, and you have the makings of one of the most off-beat, original and funny comic strips to come along in years.
"If you ask 20 people what User Friendly is about, you'll get 20 subtly different answers," says the cartoon's creator, J.D. 'Illiad' Frazer. " Some say it's a cartoon about Open Source; some say it's about the rift between technical and nontechnical staff; others say its about the pain that technical people suffer when dealing with the stubbornly unintelligent; some even say that User Friendly is a cartoon about Internet Workers. User Friendly addresses all those issues, but I don't think that's what it's about, strictly speaking. User Friendly's universe revolves around the simple idea that technology brings out both the best and the worst in people, no matter who they are."
User Friendly reads like Dilbert for the Open Source community. With a massive online following, it provides outsiders a light-hearted look at the world of the hard core geek, and allows those who make their living dwelling in this world a chance to laugh at themselves.
Customer Reviews:
For computer geeks only, but in that niche excellent.......2005-10-02
You have to be a computer geek to understand the humor. If you are, and especially if you have a unix/linux background and/or have worked with internet or other computer support you will find this one of the most hysterical comics around.
Over 300 strips from 1999: some dated, most timeless.......2005-06-21
"Three steps to completing your initiation as an Evil Genius:
1. Adopt ominous accent."
"Checkski."
"2. Never, ever smile."
"Checkski."
"3. Bring a wealthy, monopolistic multinational corporation that sells crappy operating systems to its knees."
"Am thinkink there is no way of doink number 2 and 3 at same time."
- Pitr, reading EVIL GENIUSES FOR DUMMIES
The comic strip USER FRIENDLY maintains a continuous storyline, so EVIL GENIUSES IN A NUTSHELL picks up where the first collection, USER FRIENDLY, left off. The main characters - the staff of Columbia Internet - were introduced in the first book.
Written and set during 1999, the year that THE MATRIX and STAR WARS I: THE PHANTOM MENACE were released, there are lots of then-topical references (such as the completely empty offices of Columbia Internet on May 19 and the ultimate possible evil release date for Quake III).
For instance, during one of Stef the marketing guy's dust-ups with Erwin the AI, Erwin is temporarily loaded into a Furby's toy body. (Gentle readers might remember the talking stuffed toys after a little thought.) After Stef destroys it and Erwin retaliates, Stef finds himself in big trouble with the NSA. :) At one point, Erwin ends up talking like Yoda after being stuffed into a reverse-Polish-notation calculator.
And there are plenty of fantasy elements (at least, if you're in management, you can tell yourself that's all they are). Crud the demonic entity, saying that Microsoft is passé, changes over to AOL. The techies have a holy war over which of the various flavours of Linux is The One (TM). Erwin tries to nuke a spammer, with Russia and China joining in. Pitr tries to solve some budget problems by seeking refunds for all the copies of 5 different versions of Windows Columbia Internet has acquired with their hardware. When Microsoft's anti-Linux team arrives, the coders do the logical thing: they sic the thugs onto Stef. Erwin messes with Stef's head when they get him back, almost turning him into a techie ("I'm thinking I should've taken the blue pill"), but Delilah from MS sales re-education changes him back. In between, the techs play with Half-Life, Alpha Centauri, and Rainbow Six. (When a Terminator-like engineer's brain is replaced by a Pentium III chip, our heroes only notice him because his shotgun is a cool Quake weapon.)
*No* real life techies would try to shop a colleague onto the graveyard tech support shift, would they? No sleazy marketing guy would order sleek new computer gear just to impress a good-looking female techie would he? Just fantasy elements.
Right.
Not many Y2K strips, although the techies do prepare, because while Columbia Internet is compliant they're betting that Windows isn't, and that their clients will blame them. (The next collection, THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL, deals with the post-Y2K letdown.)
New characters:
- Artur the possessed engineer, who talks like Ahnold
- Matt the sea urchin, a new friend of Dust Puppy's rescued from a sushi bar
Great coffee-table book........2003-05-05
If you enjoyed User Friendly, you'll want this sequel. If you
haven't read User Friendly, then you'll want to look at that one
first, since this one follows it. Or go to userfriendly.org and
sample a few of the strips there -- but it's hard to take the
website to the bathroom with you or leave it on the coffee table
for family or friends to discover. Hence, the printed book.
This book picks up where User Friendly left off, and it's more
of the same. The quality of the strips has not dropped off; if
anything, these strips are better than the first ones. I quite
thoroughly enjoyed it. See also Root of all Evil.
Geeks, Quake and a little romance!.......2003-05-02
Follow the guys from Columbia Internet as they work through the day to day tasks of tech support with really stupid customers, deciding which Linux distro to install, and tips on fragging the enemy. As you read you will find that there really is such a thing as a stupid question.
This book holds a little entertainment for anyone that is interested in computers. Admittedly, there is a certain level of Linux understanding to enjoy the Microsoft jokes. I would not buy this book for the technophobe in your life.
The book is dated now (who really remembers what happened on May 19th 1999?). But that is part of the fun, trying to figure out what the world events were at the time of writing.
There is something for all you computer geeks. A parody of Lord of the Rings and quite a few references to the Phantom Menace will keep you in stitches. There is even a romance that buds at the end of the book. I think it is all fake though, or at least cannot be long lived. Have you ever heard of geeks and romance going together?
The Truth Can be Funny.......2001-02-20
This is one funny book. It truly captures the the world of IT, but puts a humorous slant to it. I read it almost from cover to cover and now frequently pick it up when I am in need of a laugh. I also like to post some of the topics on the door of my office. That bugs the heck out of our NT server folks, the jibes are a little too close to home for them.

Everyone should learn how to be a proper drunk.......2006-01-11
Great book - The basics on everything you need to know about drinking with plenty of humor thrown in. I'd advise buying it for everyone you know who is turning 21! For the more experienced drinker, it's mostly things you will have already known, but there's some interesting history and lots of laughs. Definitely worth the short time it takes to read through. Crack open a bottle and get started!

Playfully written as a primer for Rebel pilots, the mini-sized X-Wing--A Pocket Manual is both a fun way to kill a few minutes and an envy-inducing symbol of Star Wars street cred. The writing is tongue-in-cheek while still remaining meticulously faithful to the movies. The pop-up ships, assembled from real movie footage, are so convincing that you'll have the irresistible urge to "fly" them--complete with sound effects. Whether it ends up in a coat pocket or on a desktop, this manual will become a prized possession--especially if it's yours. --Paul Hughes

Yawn- if you're serious about star wars, most of this stuff you already know. You can find out everything that's really good to know in this book from reading X-Wing Rogue Squadron, and have some fun besides. Skip this dull bite-sized tome and get a science textbook. It would be more fun.

Book Description
Praise for Winning At Retail
"Winning at Retail offers the most effective strategies available for retailers. At McDonald's, the `Quick-EST' model is crucial, because being close and convenient to where our customers live, work, and shop helps us create maximum value. If you want to harness your company's strengths to become a leader in your category-and stay in tune with what your customers want-this is the book for you."
-Jim Rand, Senior Vice President of Business Development, McDonald's Corporation
"Winning at Retail provides a thoughtful approach to retail differentiation. Ander and Stern warn of the `treacherous middle' into which retailers too easily drift. They inspire us to avoid this peril through case studies of retailers who have assumed leadership through courageous choice."
-Robert L. Price, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Wawa
"In a difficult retail environment, this book provides crucial guidance for staying on top of your competition-by taking the customer seriously and leveraging your strengths to provide experiences that increase customer loyalty. Will Ander and Neil Stern elegantly argue that you can't always be the biggest, fastest, and trendiest place on the block, but it takes only one of these `Ests' to be a category leader. Businesses big and small can benefit from the carefully distilled lessons in this book."
-Bernd Schmitt, Professor of Marketing, Columbia Business School and author of Customer Experience Management
Download Description
Solutions for falling sales and faltering retailers
In Winning at Retail, two prominent retail consultants offer strategies for retailers and chains suffering at the hands of decreased sales numbers. Using case studies from such success stories as Costco, Target, and Walgreens, they cover customer service, retail strategy, demographics, and the latest trends in retailing. For retailers to survive, they must adapt to the new realities of the marketplace. McMillan¿s cutting-edge advice and the unique "EST" model in this book shows them how.
Willard Ander (Chicago, IL) is a Senior Partner at McMillan Doolittle who specializes in strategy and the analysis of consumer trends. He has worked with such clients as General Motors, Sears, McDonald¿s, and Amoco on strategy and new store development.
Neil Stern (Chicago, IL) is a Senior Partner at McMillan Doolittle who specializes in strategic planning and the creative development of new retail concepts. He leads the company¿s food consulting practice and has worked with such clients as Publix Supermarkets, Chevron Oil, and Procter & Gamble.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful!.......2005-07-29
Montgomery Ward, Woolworth's and Pets.com stumbled into irrelevancy before they knew what hit them. Authors and retail consultants Willard Ander and Neil Stern explain what went wrong and tell retailers how to stay alive and thrive. They prescribe their theory, called "Est," as in the superlative suffix. Be the best, they say, in assortment (biggest), price (cheapest), customer service (easiest), speed of service (quickest) or fashion (hottest). Being "pretty good" at everything no longer works. The abundance of choices in today's transparent, digital marketplace has spawned information-overloaded, fickle, demanding customers. The authors tend to generalize about what good companies are doing right rather than describing how also-ran retailers might turn things around, but there is plenty of advice here for those who are willing to take it. We recommend this glib pep talk of a book - if for no other reason than to jolt retailers out of believing they're doing everything possible to keep customers coming back.
New 21st century of retailing.......2005-01-19
This book finally can show a retailer how to set their strengths apart from other retailers. Many retail books talk about setting yourself apart but this book shares the FIVE "EST"'s that you can be, like:
biggEST
cheapEST
fastEST
hottEST
etc
You can probably be 2 but not or 5 of them. Great history of stores that do welll. Even though the book talks in big names (like Target which is HottEST as in up to the minute designer fashions at good prices) a small retailer can do this. You jst can't THINK small.
One bad part.......If you read this and think it will be like a motivation seminar where you'll absorb this and it will happen-well, you're wrong. You need to do a lot of things different starting tomorrow morning. the same old drab store with the same old drab employees won't hack it.
You decide. But if you want to change this book will give you direction. Then go read "The E-Myth revisited"
David Geller
A Winning Book.......2004-10-15
As a business student, the book "Winning at Retail" gave me effective and simple strategies for understanding how to evaluate and critique retail concepts. In their accessible text, Ander and Stern manage to distill complex and constantly-evolving retail concepts into an intuitive model that will guide readers who need to quickly and intelligently assess how successfully a retail concept delivers value to customers.
If you're seeking an outline for the particulars of cash-flow management, marketshare, procurement strategies etc., this book won't satisfy. Stern and Ander don't excavate details. Instead, they hover at a conceptual level and methodically reduce high-achieving retailers' major differentiating factors to a workable, comprehensible 5-point "EST-model". The authors concede immediately that no retailer can (or ought to) be strong on all points of their model, since vigor on one axis may preclude a company from muscle on another. They argue that a retail concept must prevail on at least one or two points on the EST model to secure a place among the top three retailers in a segment (which, the authors say, is how to prevent consumer neglect and ultimately, the company's failure). The strengths of the EST model are both its intuitiveness to the reader and its simple construction.
The tome is pithy and easy to read. Stern and Ander sustained my attention throughout by using a familiar -- yet diverse -- set of retailers to illustrate the models. I encourage any reader who wants to appreciate what differentiates compelling retailers that stay relevant to consumers from the many that end their days in "the black hole of retail" to read Winning at Retail immediately.
The est model wins in Winning at Retail.......2004-09-28
The same retailers win year after year, Wal-mart, Target, Home Depot,Amazon while the rest barely hang on. Winning at retail tells retailers what they need, to be the _ est. Biggest, Cheapest, Quickest, Hottest. Customers have more choice and more options. The build it and they will come approach of most retailers is no longer enough. Retailers need to have the right product in the right place for the customer, or the customer will move on. Just like Good to Great, every retail company should check their strategy against Winning at Retail. Most strategies wouldnt pass, the best ones will.
Book Description
The groundbreaking book on recovering from infidelity and surviving marital affairs...and coming out stronger and more in love than ever. Courageous, bold, honest.
Brian (husband): After nearly two decades of marriage to a sexy, loving woman - with whom I made love almost every night - I came home from work one evening and told her I was moving out, leaving her for another woman. Lucky for me, my wife refused to give up on our marriage. We are now closer and more committed than ever. What you're probably wondering is, if I loved my wife so much, why did I do it? In this book, I have answered that question.
Danielle (teenage daughter): When my father told me he was leaving my mother for another woman, I felt it was me he was abandoning. I wondered "what has my whole life been so far, a joke?" In this book, I share the truth about my feelings
Anne (wife): My Husband's affair became the best thing that ever happened to me, yes eventually, but it was also the most devastating of my life. There was a time when I wondered if I could even live through it.
What people are saying..."Riveting...Mesmerizing...I couldn't put the book down."
"My Husband's Affair" deliberately removes itself from providing "the theoretical and psychological" explanations for the why of infidelity and instead purposes to take readers on a gut-honest, courageous, straight-from-the-heart journey into the lives of a couple/family who endured the aftermath of an affair. A must-read before couples, facing infidelity, make life decisions they may later regret. This book provides an alternative to the expected... hope that it's not over.
Don Huston, BTh, MC, RCC, Couples Therapist
This book makes a wonderful contribution to the growing willingness of couples to "break the code of silence" and share their experience with affairs in order to help others. It offers clear insight into the pain involved as well as great hope for the power to recover and rebuild the marriage.
Peggy Vaughan, author of "The Monogamy Myth" and Host of www.dearpeggy.com
For too long too many have suffered in silence because of the stigma associated with affairs. This book gives an honest look at the reality of betrayal and offers hope through the testimony of one brave couple.
Margie Thaler - A Reader
What a ride! Anne captures her marital journey in a way that leaves you feeling as if you've just completed a double loop on a roller coaster...only to realize there's another one coming! After reading their story, I see Anne and Brian as champions of honesty, commitment, perseverance....and true love.
Monica Columbus - A Reader
Customer Reviews:
Very helpful book.......2007-08-23
I ordered this book after my husband of 35 years told me he was having an affair and I didn't know where to turn. It offers some very useful information and advice and helped me make some important decisions. The only thing I would find negative is that this couple was able to reconcile and make their marriage better and of course that isn't the case every time. Since this is their personal experience though, it probably wouldn't be appropriate to include stories on those who weren't able to stay married.
My marriage can survive and I can heal.......2007-06-30
This book is the best purchase I have made since finding out my husband was having an affair. I have read many books about affairs and healing from an affair, but this book is by far the best one. It really hit home and offered me hope and strength when I thought I had none left. My husband and I are trying to repair our marriage and I am working on forgiving and letting go of the pain and devastation I felt for many months and still face, but this book provided me with the hope that I can forgive and our marriage can be whole again. I recommend this book to anyone that is trying to put the pieces back together and find happiness again with their spouse.
My Husband's Affair Became the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me.......2007-01-04
Excellent book. I would highly recommend it to couples who are experiencing marital difficulties involving extramarital affairs and
also for those who are support persons for a couple in trouble.
Anne does an good job of explaining what was helpful and what was
detrimental from their support system. She also was very open about
how difficult it was to recover from her husband's betrayal and all
the work involved between them to rebuild their marriage.
A "Friend".......2006-12-29
This book is amazing, I don't normally give books 5 stars but, this book I am. I received this book 2 days after it was shipped and I read the entire book from front to back in less than 3 days. It was so good, I could not put it down.
If you need books on healing, tips, advice, or just good reading on this subject I highly rec. this book. I found this book to be my "friend" during the time I read it. Anne goes into detail every experience, every emotion, every thought. Although, I wish Brian would have added more to his stories he still shared a lot in this book about his side.
There is one issue though, in this book that I do not agree with. When Anne finally realizes her faults she compares them to be equally as bad as what Brian had done. Not true, her faults were nothing even remotely close to the pain Brian had caused her. Yes, it's great that she finally realized her faults and began working on them but, no, they are not equal to his affair at all.
Best Book on this life changing subject........2006-11-10
I have read several books on this saddening subject and this book is by far the best. It was realistic and was not engulfed in medical terminology. Great book for the every day person going through a difficult time in their marriage.

To All Volunteers Who Never Returned.......2001-01-11
This book tells the history of the super-secret WW2 unit known by the term "Carpetbaggers". Flying from England, this USAAF unit flew agent drop and also supply missions for the British S.O.E. (Special Operations Executive) and for the United States OSS (Office of Stregic Services) operating in occupied Europe. The author wrote this book to tell the story of the unit that his brother died in, a death reported by the War Department at the time with no details. Even some 40 years after the war, little information was available about this unit. The author shares his search and his discoveries with the readers. This may indeed be the only history of this important air unit.

no straw dummies.......2007-07-28
The timely nature of the book's topics is one of its strengths. The book just came out, and its many of its topics can be seen in the daily newspapers. Consider one issue - are continued US sanctions on Cuba justified? The pro and con are briefly covered, but quite succinctly. Another topic asks whether membership in the World Trade Organisation is beneficial.
The book's debate format helps crystallise its topics. And the editor has skilfully recruited eloquent writers to debate both sides of each topic. No straw dummies here. A good pedagogic format that should hold the student's attention.

Taking Sides is an excellent series. Each book contains a series of debates on the given topic. These normally take the form below.
1. 2-3 page introduction and background material
2. 'Yes' argument in favor of question
3. 'No' argument against question
4. 1-2 page concluding remarks with recommended additional reading
I love the style, and it gives a great sense of the different views on the topic.
However, this book also has some problems. First, the introduction is not impartial. For example, one of the introductions said that one of the debaters made a 'dubious' claim. However correct this assertation may be, I don't think it holds any place in the introduction for a debate.
A second problem was the source material for the debates. Some were lifted directly from a live debate, with no editing. Reading a speech that is often conducted on the fly is among the most difficult things one can do. Some of the debates refer to the debater showing graphs. However, the graphs are not provided in Taking Sides! In addition, one of the debates was out of order. When the debate occurred, the 'no' argument went first. However, in Taking Sides, the 'yes' argument is presented first. Therefore, the reader must wade through references to a speech they have yet to read!
Although it does have some problems, they are fortunately limited to only about 3/5 of the arguments--therefore the three stars.

This series of books, "Taking Sides", are great for anyone who wants different perspectives on the controversial issues of today. I bought this book for a Political Science class. I found myself reading the book from cover to cover. The book gives several different topics. There is usually an introduction to the topic and two different essays written about the topic, one for and one against. It is organized in an easy to read format. I highly recommend this book and I would recommend trying some of the other books in the "Taking Sides" series.
