Very disappointing.......2007-09-17

With the title containing National Geographic, I had high expectations for this book. I am eagerly learning about Landscape Photography and wanted a book tilled with the technical details that would allow me to approach a certain level of professionalism in my photos.

Here's what you should know before buying this book:

1. The digital portion is only a few pages in the back. The book was clearly adapted from the film version of the book. When people started crying for digital info, they just stuck a few pages on.

2. The digital portion is also incorrect or misleading (shockingly). Here's one example from page 126: "More pixels usually means finer detail, and this holds true for both compact cameras and SLR's." Well...this isn't really true. It's the marketing hype that camera manufacturers are pushing. In reality, it's a combination of the size of the sensor, the megapixels and the ISO speed you set, along with the quality of the lens that means finer detail. If you squeeze 10 megapixels onto a tiny sensor, all you get is more noise.

3. 95% of the book is just talking about EXTREMELY basic stuff. Ie: The rule of thirds, including an "S" shape in your compositions, shoot at sunrise or sunset, etc.

4. This is the biggie for me: THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO TECHNICAL INFORMATION ABOUT HOW ANY PICTURE IN THE BOOK IS MADE. Other books, such as the excellent National Audubon Society Guide to Landscape Photography, include camera and exposure info, plus which filters are used and even how the filters are oriented in their holder! Filling a book with pretty pictures (as NG's guide does) teaches me nothing. Telling me how to orient and expose using a Graduated Neutral Density filter (a la Audubon Guide) will allow me to duplicate their results!

This book was a complete waste of money due to the above reasons.

All Captured in This Book.......2007-07-04

Before a camping trip in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota, I invested in my first digital camera and read this book. This field guide was informative, interesting and inspiring. It provided useful tips on not only handling the camera itself, but also how to look at one's surroundings and be able to convey the sensations at that time to others viewing the photos later. The images throughout the text provided moving examples of Robert Caputo's and other professional photographers' pointers. Advanced photographers looking through this book would appreciate the mastery of these photos, and novices would gain confidence through this guide to eventually achieve this level of photography.

Previous reviewers have been unfair with this book. You cannot knock a book for delivering exactly what it promises to deliver.

Following up on the great National Geographic Photography Field Guide and focusing specifically on landscapes, of course this book is going to be thinner. However, it shines at what it sets out to do.

Every chapter is packed with world-class photography tips as well as inspiring landscape images - from the world's best. Most of the excellent examples are by Caputo himself but outstanding photographers such as Sam Abell, Bruce Dale, and James Blair have also contributed many of the stunning photos throughout the book.

This small guidebook is clear, honest, and practical, full of techniques that work for landscape photographers shooting in the real world. What's more, it fits in your camera bag!

Good, slim guide to landscape photography.......2003-07-02

The Landscapes Field Guide continues along one branch of the first NGS field guide. It contains more advanced composition and technical advice than the first field guide, tailored to the specific art of photographing natural landscapes in a variety of settings and times of the day. Once again, Caputo writes a book that is not only succinct, but also enjoyable to read.

The Landscapes Field Guide maintains an important aspect of the original: profiles of National Geographic photographers, each with their own set of advice. This is a primary strength of the NGS photography field guides and something that separates them from other books. Not only are the profile sections useful in learning how to go about taking pictures, they are interesting in their own right as glimpses into how different artists work.

Buy the original.......2002-10-08

National Geographic's original Field Guide was a big hit for a wide audience of photography aficionados. There was plenty for beginners, such as advice on equipment selection, basic subjects such as the relationship between shutter speed and aperture, and film selection. More advanced readers could benefit from the excellent essays contributed by Geographic's veteran staff photographers.

Unfortunately, Geographic appears to be trying to turn the formula into a franchise. In this most recent volume, Landscapes the focus is on, well, landscapes. The problem is that there is very little in this book that wasn't effectively covered in the first one. Yeah, use a tripod. Yeah, don't let snowy scenes fool your lightmeter. And no, the art of photography does not become clearer if you repeat the same points over and over for 150 pages.

If you don't have the original Field Guide then get it; I found it to be both informative and inspirational. If you already have it then don't buy Landscapes; it doesn't add any meaningful new material. Not recommended.

Great Photos, but little information.......2002-08-24

I expected more from this book. It is basically a non-technical review of composition for the beginner. The photos are really great, but they don't list the usual information used to get them (lens type, settings, filters, etc.). I really didn't gain any insight from this book, and doubt that anyone other than a beginning photographer would either.

For landscape photography, and for photography in general, their basic photography guide is much better.

It's difficult to believe that Bill Griffith had such magnificent vision. This volume is nearly twenty five years old, but it belongs in every real man's library.

In "Zippy: Nation of Pinheads" Griffith offers plausible explanations and observations concerning American greed, culture, far beyond fear and loathing:

How vast herds of Nauga were reduced to a few thousand head, bringing this twentieth century marketing invention to near extinction. How legions of evil smurfs have systematically perverted the nature of our culture for years. How war in the Persian Gulf brought feelings of lethargy and inadequacy to a man who the author describes as "A Failed Gary Cooper type". Why Lonnie Anderson always looked like she was wearing some sort of crazy hat.

This important peice of literature will retain its place in libraries and the very fabric of our culture for years to come, I hope and I pray.

I am over the age of 13.

Early Days of the Great Pinhead.......2000-03-31

This collection of strips from the early '80's is classic Zippy, the non-sequitors flying madly as Bill Griffith's keen satire lays waste to our consumer culture (while reveling in it!).

This is an excellent introduction to "Life According to Zippy" - I found myself at first not knowing what to make of Griffith's nonsense, but after a few pages... It makes complete sense! And then, you're hooked!

I've since collected virtually all of the Zippy collections. Let a little Zippy into your life - You'll be glad you did!

Employee X is obviously very good at thinking up ways to cheat his employer. I am a Controller at a company that has about 75 expense filers. After I read the book I reviewed some old expense reports and realized that we had no way to catch some of the fraud the "author" recommends. I dug deeper and looked at the sales department expenses and was floored by the amount of errors and outright cheating. Thanks to Employee X we looked at ways to improve our auditing. We ended up going with a web product called expense expert and our employees suddenly started submitting smaller expense reports and we could easily spot "mistakes". Read the book if you are in finance but keep it away from your sales people.

I did a monologue in front of Tony Martinez at TVI Actors Studio, and he was generous enough to tell me what did and didn't work. His book just as helpful, only laced with his terrific sense of humor. I would say this is a must have for any actor and would probably be helpful for managers and workers in corporate America.

I recently re-entered the entertainment industry, Hollywood, to be specific, and I thought of buying this book. I had gotten an e-mail for it about one year earlier and I had wanted to buy it then. Upon reading this book, I began to understand things I had always wanted to have an inside scoop on when I was in the industry before. Tony Martinez may not give ALL the inside information on agents and their dealings, but he gives enough of a "bigger" picture to give an actor a leg up on what an agent wants and how the two can best work together. I think that Mr. Martinez genuinely cares for actors and that it shows in the way he has written the book - concisely, the content of the book - broad-ranging and specific examples, and how he delivers his truth as an agent - straight. I thank him for having the foresight to do it and though he may be short-sighted in some of his stories about his clients and who needs who most, I think that he delivers what he says he will on the back cover.

Must Have for Actors!.......2006-07-13

I m an actor in L.A. and without a doubt this is the best material available on the actor/agent relationship available. Everything you could ever care to know is in this book and its all told in a funny highly readable manner. Its an absolute must have and one of the true jewels I have in all my books on the business of acting. Most of em are the same, and much of those are garbage, but this one simply cant be missed.

Many actors are in the dark when it comes to what an agent expects of them as a client. Well, not if they've read this book! Tony Martinez tells it like it is. Especially helpful is his chapter on what to do when you get that "all important meeting" with a potential agent. This book will definitely help you be ready when the phone rings.

An absolute neccessity for actors.......2006-01-12

This could be the most useful and concise of all the books I have on the acting business. I have just finished reading it the second time and must say that I still find it enjoyable and informative. It's an easy read with decent sized text and best of all... it doesn't take six months to plod through. If you are looking for a tome on everything acting, including places to walk your dog, look elsewhere. A lot of information without a lot of fluff, and from the pen (or word-processor) of someone who IS an agent as opposed to an ex-wanna-be actor who thought they might learn a little about the business by asking some questions of a few agents. It also gives you the perspective of the least understood job in this business. The last Chapter should be printed and hung on the wall of anyone aspiring to be a professional actor.

This should be the first acting business book you read. ...And next time you see your agent, give her/him a hug and tell them how much you appreciate them.

Entertaining and Educational.......2003-08-19

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. General Rosser did an excellent job of bringing the civil war to the reader. His descriptions of battles and skirmishes and the strategy behind them were entertaining and educational. Not having a real good knowledge of the civil war battles, the sketches of maps helped me immensely with understanding of what was happening. S. Roger Keller has done General Rosser and students of the civil war a great service. General Rosser also reminds the reader the tragedy of the soldiers that fought in the civil war.

As a relative of the General, I have to say that I enjoyed this book completely. The only disturbing aspect was the cover; looks like my brother posed for the photo.

Weeks is a genius. He came into my population life course class and spoke about anything we wanted to know, and was happy to be there. Which is weird, coming from the academic world.

This is a great introduction to demographics. It provides a easy to read introduction. It is still a college textbook. The author integrates humor into the text, which certainly kept me reading. Infotrac was completely worthless. It was a password to a three-month trial of access to databases. I already have access to databases through other sources, school and the library.
