Book Description
Dandies: Fashion and Finesse in Art and Culture considers the visual languages, politics, and poetics of personal appearance. Dandyism has been most closely associated with influential caucasian Western men-about-town, epitomized by the 19th century style-setting of Oscar Wilde and by Tom Wolfe's white suits. The essays collected here, however, examine the spectacle and workings of dandyism to reveal that these were not the only dandies. On the contrary, art historians, literary and cultural historians, and anthropologists identify unrecognized dandies flourishing among early 19th century Native Americans, in Soviet Latvia, in Africa, throughout the African-American diaspora, among women, and in the art world.
Moving beyond historical and fictional accounts of dandies, this volume juxtaposes theoretical models with evocative images and descriptions of clothing in order to link sartorial self-construction with artistic, social, and political self-invention. Taking into consideration the vast changes in thinking about identity in the academy,
Dandies provides a compelling study of dandyism's destabilizing aesthetic enterprise.

A remarkable book, by a remarkable equine photographer. A must-have for any horselover.
Gorgeous, leather-bound coffee table book and printed on heavy glossy paper, featuring over 400 color photographs and informative text of some of the world's best known breeds in addition to some of the more obscure breeds.

Fascination Horse.......2006-01-16
Dont order from here if you are in a hurry. I ordered this book on 10 November for my wife's birthday on 31st December. It's now 16th January and today Amazon cancelled my order as the book is not available. However they still allow you to order it, and nothing is mentioned about the delay. Good luck getting your copy.
Beautiful and poetic. . ........2005-06-13
this is one of the most beautiful books on horse photography. The pictures she took really capture different cultures of the world and each breed's individuality. I understand this book to be the first in a series, otherwise I would complain that more breeds weren't shown. However, I hear there is more to come.
One of the most beautiful horse books ever published!.......2004-10-04
This large coffee table book is WELL worth the price (and cheap, at that!). It is rare to find a published photo of a horse that simply blows you away, but this book contains at LEAST ten such drop-you-in-your-tracks images. Gabriele Boiselle is a MASTER photographer. Horsemen (horsepeople, actually) will thank you profusely if you give this book to them as a gift, as will artists, photographers and just about anyone with a soul attuned to the beauty of horses. I plan to purchase a second copy immediately to give to my son, who is both a photographer and horsekeeper.
Fascination Horse,a must have piece of art.......2004-06-11

Better start early!.......2006-08-01
Someone told me to get this book as it is an easy book to comprehend. However, that was not the case. This book is definitely NOT recommended for beginners. It is a highly technical book. Those who know the basics of film, light, waves, optics, etc will get this book. I will, though, not discourage beginners from trying it out. If you're in this field and want to stay in it, someday you'd be required to know these things. Better start early!

In consultant Cyndi Crother's Catch! the fabled Pike Place Market fishmongers in Seattle explain a shared philosophy of work and life in their own words. The author's work as anthropologist--she interviewed and flung fish with 17 crew members--allows her to translate their inside jokes and shoutouts into habits of mind to "transform ordinary into great." Crother manages to keep Piscean puns to a minimum (stop floundering, how to get off the hook) and skillfully applies the principles of mind-over-matter cognitive psychology. Several phrases are key. "It's all over here," is an expression of personal responsibility and choosing a positive response to create the outcome. "What you say is what get" is a mantra for using choosing your words to change your mind.
These ideas of self-reliance, intention and language as reality are not new. Yet Crother gives them a fresh and practical application in the photos of individual fishmongers and in their words. Whether reading about Jeremy's ordeal of chemotherapy or Bugge's finessing the customer who was showered with ice from a flying fish, readers will find the most animated and instructive stories since Finding Nemo. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
With the publication of the mega-seller Fish!, the Pike Place Fish Market became famous both for its fascinating work culture and as a striking model for personal and business success. Catch! continues where Fish! left off, taking readers behind the scenes at the market for more life lessons. Written by the fishmongers themselves, the book offers some profound insights into creating powerful life experiences, with examples of how those insights look in action, in the fishmongers' lives. Catch! covers a wide range of concerns - the difference between "being" and "doing," dovetailing the crew's and management's financial and humanitarian goals, sharing the power of language and personal thoughts and opinions, coaching and acknowledgment, and facing - and overcoming - breakdowns. The principles and stories from mongers like Jeremy, who overcame a brain tumor, show readers how to go from the ordinary to the extraordinary in all areas of their lives.

Turns a tedious, dirty job into an adventure........2006-02-02
I don't know about you, but when I think about working in a fish shop, all I can think is; I'll never get that smell off my hands. I was in Seattle about 16 years ago and went to Pike Place Market. I don't remember seeing that particular fish market, but the whole market is pretty cool. This is a fantastic book. The thought of the motley crew of guys pictured in the book getting along and having fun is nothing short of amazing. The shop is proof that you can have fun, learn, and make a lot of money doing just about anything, if certain rules are observed. One of the main secrets of their success is the ability to be taught. So many people, especially after working in the same occupation for a number of years, or reaching a certain age feel like they know it all, and are not willing to try anything new. These employees each essentially 'own' a piece of the business. With ownership it's easier to accept responsibility and get a feeling of success and euphoria. This company also holds biweekly meetings, as well as huddles at the start and end of each day. The stories of each employee as portrayed inspired me, even if they were embellished by the author. The author did an exemplary job writing this book, and I would recommend it to anyone working for themselves or for an employer, after all, we are all working for ourselves anyway.
wow .......2005-03-06
This is one of the most inspiring things I have ever read. The best part was hearing how one of the fishmongers used this 'fish philosophy' in dealing with a brain tumor. His attitude was admirable and all of the guys' stories were so neat. They really seem to live what they speak about. In visiting the market last year I was able to see that they not only have fun, play, make your day, and are 'there' but also have great fish. Check out the book and order some great fresh fish while you are at it from www.pikeplacefish.com
A Good Read!.......2004-06-03
While author Cyndi Crother acknowledges that another wildly successful business book about this fish market preceded her, she has insights to offer based on time she spent with the free-wheeling, fish-throwing denizens of Seattle's World Famous Pike Place Fish. Her book picks up on the spirit of past coverage, but she adds the fishmongers' philosophical ruminations to her own slightly mushy, eclectic New Age managerial wisdom. This is not for strictly business readers, but it will ring a chord with those who seek to balance life and work. It's about warmth, and treating people with sensitivity, and creating your own reality by aligning your thoughts and actions with your intentions. It is also about workplace comradeship, customer service and how to sell the heck out of fish all day long. It's all pretty entertaining, given the lively background of the fish market. We suggest you throw a line in the water; you might just hook something you can really use
Most inspiriational book I have read lately!.......2004-03-06
If this book does not inspire you to come alive and get going with your life, nothing will. And it is not some philosoper's old boring stuff; it is real life from ordinary fish mongers. It is down-to-earth information that is easily read, easily undetstood, and easy to apply to your own life. I plan to reread this little book several times a year to remind me what any person can easily do to become "great."
The whole idea of the Pike Place Fish Market is inspirational. If you have ever been to the market in Seattle, you will be quite inspired and maybe even a happier person right away because if it. The people who work there are inspirational. They are succeeding personally and as part of a team. They are very happy to be working where they are. They have a formula for success that is really working, and working for ordinary people. This is why they sell tons of fish on the Internet. This is why they perform training programs all over the country. This is why they sell so many books and videos and T-shirts.
If you do not check into this source of inspiriation you are losing out. I'm so glad I know about Fish!
From the heart.......2004-01-18
I've read FISH! and all the related books...loved them all. Catch is different; it is written from the point of view of the fishmongers. It has passion -- it comes from the heart.
The fishmonger's vision "to make a difference" comes through loud and clear.
I've added Catch to my FISH! collection and I am recommending it to all my FISH! associates.
Keep up the inspirational work.... you guys are the best!
:)
Book Description
From the Hardcover
“We stormed every classroom, inscribed our slogans on the blackboard . . . Never had mayhem brought more peace. All our lives we had been taught the virtues of behaving, and now we were discovering the importance of misbehaving. Too much fear had tainted our days. Too many afternoons had passed in silence, listening to a fanatic’s diatribes. We were rebelling because we were not evil, we had not sinned, and we knew nothing of the apocalypse. . . . This was 1979, the year that showed us we could make our own destinies. We were rebelling because rebelling was all we could do to quell the rage in our teenage veins. Together as girls we found the courage we had been told was not in us.”
In Journey from the Land of No Roya Hakakian recalls her childhood and adolescence in prerevolutionary Iran with candor and verve. The result is a beautifully written coming-of-age story about one deeply intelligent and perceptive girl’s attempt to ï¬?nd an authentic voice of her own at a time of cultural closing and repression. Remarkably, she manages to re-create a time and place dominated by religious fanaticism, violence, and fear with an open heart and often with great humor.
Hakakian was twelve years old in 1979 when the revolution swept through Tehran. The daughter of an esteemed poet, she grew up in a household that hummed with intellectual life. Family gatherings were punctuated by witty, satirical exchanges and spontaneous recitations of poetry. But the Hakakians were also part of the very small Jewish population in Iran who witnessed the iron fist of the Islamic fundamentalists increasingly tightening its grip. It is with the innocent confusion of youth that Roya describes her discovery of a swastika—“a plus sign gone awry, a dark reptile with four hungry claws”—painted on the wall near her home. As a schoolgirl she watched as friends accused of reading blasphemous books were escorted from class by Islamic Society guards, never to return. Only much later did Roya learn that she was spared a similar fate because her teacher admired her writing.
Hakakian relates in the most poignant, and at times painful, ways what life was like for women after the country fell into the hands of Islamic fundamentalists who had declared an insidious war against them, but we see it all through the eyes of a strong, youthful optimist who somehow came up in the world believing that she was different, knowing she was special. At her loneliest, Roya discovers the consolations of writing while sitting on the rooftop of her house late at night. There, “pen in hand, I led my own chorus of words, with a melody of my own making.” And she discovers the craft that would ultimately enable her to find her own voice and become her own person.
A wonderfully evocative story,
Journey from the Land of No reveals an Iran most readers have not encountered and marks the debut of a stunning new talent.

Using a snapshot to tell a story.......2007-04-15
The author was incredibly adept at using a well written snapshot of an event in her life to give the reader an overall sense of what was going on in the country during the Iranian revolution. This author can write!
Insights on revolution.......2007-04-14
I've never examined the Iranian Revolution, and this book provided great insight. By reading Roya's story, I witnessed how passion for and support of the revolution turned into horror when things got out of control. Revolutions often turn out this way; let the mistakes of the past be warnings for all of us today! Sometimes what looks good doesn't really turn out to be so great! This book, however, looks good and IS good. Journey from the Land of No is a must-read as it provides excellent insight.
Don't bother!.......2007-02-09
I truly enjoy reading memoirs, but this one did not grab me at all. I couldn't wait until I was done, and regret wasting my time. There are numerous other books on this topic much more interesting!
Eye-opening.......2007-01-05
This is an excellent book; I highly recommend it. I learned a lot, and Ms. Hakakian is a great author. One word of warning; she does not claim to be completely unbiased about what occured in and before 1979 in Iran; and she stays true to this claim. So, the book is a bit one-sided, I suppose; but it tells the side of the story that I also had never heard, which is important.
Vefry Good Middle Class Perspective.......2006-12-03
This book is a treasure for those interested in enhancing their understading of religious minorities' "Nationalist" mindset in Iran, particularly during the Pahlavi period. One has to take into cosideration that a large number of Jews in Iran converted to Islam for pragmatic reasons prior to the pahlavi dynasty. The brand of pre-Islamic nationanist secularism promoted by the Pahlavi shahs in Iran is ever present throughout this book. Personally, I believe the author is an Iranian patriot. She does, to some degree, have an undesrstanding of an "Iranian consciousness" regardless of religious inclination. She is very sympathetic toward "martyrs" of Iran-Iraq war, to the extend to which she modestly discredits herself as a moral authority on the subject due to the fact that she did not pay a physical price for defending Iran. I am very glad that I read this book. It reaffirmed my belief that many Iranian Jews consider themselves Iranians first and then perhaps Jewish, quite similar to their secular Muslim Iranian cousins.

Book Description
This in-depth study identifies the factors behind the Indonesian military's decision to reposition its dominant role in sociopolitical affairs after the fall of Suharto. Also discussed are the conflict between the military and the new civilian regime under President Abdurrahman Wahid, and the role of the military in Wahid's fall. In addition, the military's future role under President Megawati is assessed, together with the possibilities of it resuming power.
Book Description
Of the four horrific hijackings on September 11, Flight 93 resonates as one of epic resistance. At a time when the United States appeared defenseless against an unfamiliar foe, the gallant passengers and crew of Flight 93 provided for many Americans a measure of victory in the midst of unthinkable defeat. Together, they seemingly accomplished what all the security guards and soldiers, military pilots and government officials, could not -- they thwarted the terrorists, sacrificing their own lives so that others might live.
The culmination of hundreds of interviews with family members and months of investigation, Among the Heroes is the definitive story of the courageous men and women aboard Flight 93, and of the day that forever changed the way Americans view the world and themselves.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely moving testimony.......2006-07-18
I've read hundreds of books over the past few years, but none like "Among the Heroes: United Flight 93 and the Passengers and Crew Who Fought Back." This, to say the least, is an incredibly phenomenal book which touches the deepest parts of the heart, mind and soul. There were countless times when I was brought to tears as I read this book - it is extremely moving.
Jere Longman did an amazing job researching, interviewing, and writing this book. His way of showing us all that each of the individuals on United 93 were heroes is so elegantly done. Originally, four men - Todd Beamer, Mark Bingham, Tom Burnett and Jeremey Glick - were thought to have been the ones to fight back on United 93 on that dreadful day of September 11th, 2001, but we quickly learn, reading this book, that each and every one of the passengers were heroes in different ways. They all were put on that plane by the higher powers in this universe, for they each brought something which would help bring the terrorist down and reclaim our power.
The mini-biographies of each of the crew members and passengers was extremely well-written and compiled in a manner which makes for an easy and enjoyable read. Of the countless books published on 9/11, I would have to say this is, by far, the best one. There is no other book which comes even remotely close to the caliber of this book.
impressive!.......2006-06-02
As someone with a strong interest in the events of September 11, 2001, I wanted to learn more about the passengers and attacks. This book goes into great detail about the passengers on United Flight 93;their personal lives, interests, and their reasons for fighting back against the terrorists. I felt like I practically knew them after reading this book. There is one quote from passenger Deora Bodley that I felt like was well put and fitting for this type of novel:
"People ask who, what, when, why, and how. I ask Peace."
I admired people like Todd Beamer and Tom Burnett Jr. for their decisive actions. You will learn more about the passengers, their families, and the after-effects of their heroic actions as well as the other events that horrible day. Make this one a must-read. A true winner.
Among the Heroes.......2005-12-19
Deora,Todd,Jeremy,Tom,Wanda and the rest of the heroes, including United 93's original pilots, should all be read about by every American. Reading this book is the best way I can think of to gain a bit of information about these American Heroes and the lives they lived. It's good to know about the people who stopped Mohammad Atta and the four other terrorists on their evil mission.
Well done Jere.
A Fascinating Book.......2005-11-26
This is, by far, one of the best books that I have ever read. Those folks that have reviewed it and wondered where the "proof" is are stuck in perpetual la-la land. The tragic events of 9-11 are forever ingrained into the American culture. This book should be a "must read" for every American. Jere Longman is a great story-teller.
The people of Flight 93 and their impact on 9/11/2001........2005-04-25
This is a rather large biographical sketch of 40 people who were traveling on United flight 93 from Newark to San Francisco on 9/11/2001. As most people know, four Arab hijackers took control of the aircraft and turned it around aiming it in the direction of Washington D.C. The hijackers never made it to their intended target because probably 5-6 passengers decided they were going to take the aircraft back. The hijackers either lost control of the aircraft or plunged it into the ground.
Almost all the passengers were detailed in this book. Many of them had made last minute phone calls to their loved ones to say good bye, and these were tear jerking moments to read. That is why I rated this book a four star. Most of the other material was rather pedestrian.
The problem I have with this book is that the author leaves much of the material out about the probable struggle aboard the aircraft. Perhaps not much is known, but it would have been interesting knowing the possible scenarios. What we get is sweet memories from relatives of their lost ones on Flight 93.
This should be known, but the struggle needs to more detailed in the book.

I NEVER KNEW........2003-10-17
This is a very interesting book. It is full of knowledge and this knowledge is quite expertly presented. On the first look it may appear that this book is not for everyone but, trust me, we all can use this information. I had such fun reading it and you would, I know.
A great book for anyone interested in birds........1998-04-24
Loaded with interesting and unusual information about birds, this is a wonderful book for busy birders. It can be read from beginning to end (A to Z) or opened to any page; read for two minutes or an hour; and you will never lose your place! It will make a wonderful gift for your bird watching friends.
Excellent compendium for the seasoned veteran and the novice.......1998-04-14
The enthusiasm of EH Stickney's writing is infectious. Her book is extremely readable, and is sure to put many a smile on your face as you peruse her entries on the common and not-so-common of our feathered friends. "A Little Bird" is an excellent compendium of fact and folklore that readily distills for the reader those tidbits that are likely to be of most interest. While packed with information, it is not a book that will bog you down. It opened new windows for me (someone who's been interested in birds all his life), but it also would be an excellent way to introduce inquisitive young minds to the world of ornithology. I recommend it highly.
this book is great.......1998-03-29
