Finally found some help.............2006-08-24
I believe that this book will be the nearest thing that will specifically speak about concert photograhy. I recently got into concert photography. I needed a book to help me figure out certain things like low light photography, equipment, ect. I've bought other low light photography books but they were never as specific as this one. I can definitly say that I learned a lot. I wish Sievert would have spoken a bit more about digital photography but overall it has great methods and technics for you to have a basic understanding of concert photography.
Great........2006-05-16
If concert photography is your thing, then this is the book for you. If you utilize all the techniques and methods described within, your pictures will look professional and artistic. After reading this, you're almost sure to make money off of the pictures you take. It's great! I also recommend "The Music Business Bundle" by Ty Cohen.
Decent book for beginners.......2006-03-11
Has some good info but being kind of experienced most of the stuff I already knew (still had a bunch of stuff that was interesting to read though). Also it needs to be updated a bit to fit the digital age better. Overall though, really good book for someone who hasn't been in the profession.
Four Stars.......2005-10-26
I ordered the book as it was the only one on the subject I could find. It's full of advices and recommendations for succeding in this job. But as it is a relative old book, many things in the music business have changed and it doesn't cover digital photography and dedicates more than 60 pages discussing films, lenses and bodies. I found the Chapters on Protecting your Rights and Selling & leasing photos to be the most interesting.
concert shooting bible.......2002-08-31
a good 'get to know what to do' book on shooting music. great for people wanting to get into the business

For anyone who loves dinosaurs as much as I do, this is one of the most beautifully detailed comics about those big extinct lizards. Ricardo Delgado, whose credits include several movie and television storyboards and designs, presents this wordless comics that, precisely because there are no words to clutter up the story, feels like a strange kind of lost film footage. The story is about what happens when a roaming deinonychus band steals the eggs of a family of tyrannosaurus rexes. Well, of course, the T Rexes want revenge! This edition features introductions by special effects legend Ray Harryhausen and film maker John Landis.

Great Narrative completely lacking text........2004-12-11
My review title sums it all up basically. I would recommend this not only to those who can appreciate dinosaurs but to anyone who can appreciate any form of visual storytelling. Delgado's artwork would make a text narrative redundant. The plot, mood and characters (which are all dinosaurs) are all brought to life to such a level that words on the page would seem to be nothing more than needless pollution. Even the various intricate personalities of all of these mute dinosaurs are very clear. They are rendered stylistically and filled with expression and intent. To put it simply, this is a must-own graphic novel. The task that Ricardo Delgado is accomplishing here is something that any serious artist should tip their hat to.
Amazing art and great storyline.......2000-04-14
Ricardo Delgado has outdone himself with this extroardinary graphic novel about feuding dinosaur families. This novel is a mix of Jurassic Park and The Land Before Time. A definite read for comic fans and/or dinosaur fans.

Incredible stuff.......2006-05-04
After skimming through a friend's copy of A Separate Cinema one evening, Mr. Danger was so impressed that I purchased it myself the very next day. This is an amazing book, essential to the collection of any student of American film. Within it's 150 oversized glossy pages are theaterical posters, from hundreds of mostly forgotten Black films dating back to the roaring twenties, to train your eyeballs on. Entire chapters are dedicated to the great Paul Robeson, Jazz and sports themed pictures, and early Black musicals such as the classic Hallelujah!. Donald Bogle contributes an essay on the often obscure history of American Black cinema, and every poster is accompanied by a paragraph about the film it represents. Spike Lee even wrote the introduction! Rarely have I gotten so much replay value from a single book. In fact, I've been inspired to watch as many of these films as are available on DVD (criminally few). The only drawback is that ASC seems to now be out of print, but don't let that deter you. Scour the used bookstores and flea markets in your area. It's well worth the effort.
The black cinema comes into the light........2002-12-17
I doubt any future book will cover the subject of black cast movie posters as well as this one. As a designer interested in the look of popular culture I was surprised that there were so many posters for this niche market. Over two-hundred are shown in this very well designed book (thanks to Debbie Glasserman) they are all in color and each has a very detailed caption. I must say though that as designs they are all uniformly uninspiring (except for Uncle Tom's Cabin, 1927 and The Green Pastures, 1936) but what they lack in stylish graphics and type they make up for in an exuberance of color, flamboyant images plus huge angled titles and cast lists, all to put across what the movie was about and pull the customer into a downtown picture palace.
Donald Bogle writes a short essay on the history of black movies but strangely makes no comment about the posters or who produced them. John Kisch, who collects black cast movie posters suggests in his Author's Note that frequently the poster artwork was more interesting than the movie itself. Get this book if you are into the graphic history of American movies, it covers one small historical part and does it very well.

A Separate Cinema - A Must!.......2000-02-20
The images of Black in the history of American cinema is in constant need of exploration. Too often what we are presented with are images and visions created by movie moguls and mavens that bear little resemblence to the rich vitality of Black life and culture in America. Mammies. Coons, and Sambos are omnipresent in most studies, adding a buffoonish, yet toxically inaccurate picture whenever Blacks are portrayed. Fortunately, "A Separate Cinema" is a move in the right direction of presenting an alternative view. Complete with colorful and vivid posters and information, the reader is returned to a period where such early pivotal Black auteurs as Oscar Micheaux attempt to show Black images on screen through Black eyes. Paul Robeson is shown in all of his splendor. The sauve and handsome Ralph Cooper makes his appearance. Movies that are now in the dustbin of history returns to the viewer. As a teacher of U.S. history and African-American history, "A separate Cinema" never fails to enlighten and impress my students - both Black and White. This book is a must for those willing to move beyond the stereotypical version offered by traditional hollywood accounts. It not only offers a Separate Cinema, but a separately created vision of reality. I highly recommend this book for all progressive students of American film history.
An eye-opener for every movie loving person........1999-03-23
A simple love of movie-posters has turned into a serious interest of African-American cinema. Something I never really knew about. This book showes the viewer a history in pictures about pictures mostly unseen in The Netherlands or anywhere outside the US. If you just like posters, it is unmissable. If you like film-poster history, it's unmissable. If you're interested in anything besides pure Hollywood-soaked books and paraphernalia, this book is simply a must-have. Fantastic!

This collection of pieces is a nostalgic reminder of the bygone days of goodtime, bouncing, happy music. Some of these solo guitar settings of old standards are transcriptions (arrangements that are as close as possible to the original piano settings), but most are arranged by the author in a free swing or stride style. These familiar tunes are fun to play and use a variety of idioms that were used in the days of swing and stride playing. The harmonies and lines bring out the fullest richness of guitar sounds that many love to hear. Each tune is presented in standard notation and tablature with performance notes.

The name Alf Wight may not ring too many bells, but as James Herriot--the author who brought the British countryside into millions of homes--Wight certainly made an impressive mark. He grew up in Glasgow and enjoyed a boisterous childhood before deciding to embark on many years of training at the Glasgow Veterinary College. Wight finally qualified as a vet in 1939 and moved to the Yorkshire town of Thirsk to accept a position as assistant to Dr. Donald Sinclair--the man known to millions of readers as Siegfried Farnan.
The story of the young vet travelling to Thirsk (a.k.a. Darrowby) was immortalized in Herriot's bestselling books. But The Real James Herriot, Jim Wight's affectionate biography of his father, tells the story of the man behind the nom de plume, who worked in the same practice for over 50 years and was relatively untouched and unimpressed by his fame as an author. Wight the younger (who followed in his father's footsteps and later joined the practice in Thirsk), is undoubtedly the best person to reveal the depths of a man whose public persona was as respected and trusted as the real man who tended to animals in and around the small Yorkshire village where he lived until the day he died. Written with a tenderness that does nothing to detract from the honesty of the book, The Real James Herriot is a fitting, poignant, and often gently humorous portrait of a man who brought so much pleasure through his writing while remaining consistently faithful to the profession that was, ultimately, his first and last love. --Susan Harrison, Amazon.co.uk
Book Description
No one is better poised to write the biography of James Herriot than the son who worked alongside him in the Yorkshire veterinary practice when Herriot became an internationally bestselling author. Now, in this warm and poignant biography, Jim Wight ventures beyond his father's life as a veterinarian to reveal the man behind the stories--the private individual who refused to allow fame and wealth to interfere with his practice or his family. With access to all of his father's papers, correspondence, manuscripts, and photographs--and intimate recollections of the farmers, locals, and friends who populate the James Herriot books--only Jim Wight could write this definitive biography of the man who was not only his father but his best friend.

Herriot Family Story.......2007-05-18
I have been an avid reader of all the Herriot books, this one by the son certainly lives up to the high standard set by the father ( James)
The writer sticks to pure facts about his father,I particulary enjoyed the way he delved into the more intimate stories of his fathers early partnership problems.
The Wight family came thru' to me as friends, in no way was the family pictured as anything else than those of a country vet.
A book I would have no hesitation in recomending to anyone who has an interest in British country life.
This book reminds me how much Herriot is missed.......2007-04-09
If you enjoyed the Herriot stories and television shows, you need to add this to your library. Truly, it is a good book; and a really special part of this book is the inclusion of photographs. Too bad there weren't more, the photos were a nice way of connecting characters with faces and places. My favorite is the "partners in more sense than one" which has actor Christopher Timothy standing behind Alf, Robert Hardy behind Donald Sinclair, and Peter Davison behind Brian Sinclair. A Memoir of My Father only reminded me how much I miss Herriot and crew. I actually bought this book because I've read all of Herriot's books (and seen all the films) and I just wish there were more. It was fun getting to know the real people behind the memorable and cherished stories. I could go on and on, but this space is for comments about the Memoir. Gee whiz, I sure do wish there'd been more books. Go ahead and get this one. You'll enjoy it for the memories, which is all we have left of the remarkable vet, and I am so very sad about that. The DVD's are very expensive, but this one is worth getting: All Creatures Great & Small: The Complete Series 1 Collection
Not a cliffhanger.......2007-03-09
But to a Herriott "nut" like me, it was worth all five stars. If you are not a Herriott fan, then you probably won't learn anything here to change your mind. I think it is fantastic that a country vet could become such a good writer, and keep his feet on the ground (which was most often a barnyard).
He was just such a likeable man. This book brought the real man closer.
It made me laugh, and it made me cry. What higher praise can I give?.......2006-11-18
In the paperback section of my college's bookstore, in 1975, I bought what I intended as a Christmas gift for an elderly lady who'd been kind to me in a strange city. Luckily I read its first chapter before I wrapped it, and I wound up keeping the book as a result. I couldn't imagine my sweet elderly friend reacting to a graphic calving except by turning green - but I fell in love with All Things Bright and Beautiful, by James Herriot.
I wasn't alone. Readers all over the world, and in the United States especially, fell in love with the writing of a Yorkshire veterinarian who had nothing published until after his 25th wedding anniversary. I knew vaguely that "James Herriot" was a pseudonym, and that his books - while presented as fiction - were solidly based on real-life characters and events. But that's all I knew, going into this biography of James Alfred "Alf" Wight that's authored by his son Jim. Yes, "Jimmy" from the books, who took on this task at the urging of his father's publisher after Alf Wight's death.
Jim Wight doesn't profess to be a writer. He's simply a son telling his father's life story, based on considerable research as well as on his own memories. The result is a loving but honest portrait of a wonderful but far from perfect man, who always - even after writing made him a millionaire - thought of himself first, last, and always as a practicing veterinarian. It's a marvelous character study that no Herriot fan should miss.
Book Description
No one is better poised to write the biography of James Herriot than the son who worked alongside him in the Yorkshire veterinary practice when Herriot became an internationally bestselling author. Now, in this warm and poignant memoir, Jim Wight talks about his father--the beloved veterinarian whom his family had to share with half the world.
Alf Wight (aka James Herriot) grew up in Glasgow, where he lived during a happy rough-and-tumble childhood and then through the challenging years of training at the Glasgow Veterinary College. The story of how the young vet later traveled to the small Yorkshire town of Thirsk, aka Darrowby, to take the job of assistant vet is one that is well known through James Herriot's internationally celebrated books and the popular All Creatures Great and Small television series.
But Jim Wight's biography ventures beyond the trials and tribulations of his father's life as a veterinarian to reveal the man behind the stories--the private individual who refused to allow fame and wealth to interfere with his practice or his family. With access to all of his father's papers, correspondence, manuscripts, and photographs--and intimate remembrances of all the farmers, locals, and friends who populate the James Herriot books--only Jim Wight could write this definitive biography of the man who was not only his father but his best friend.

A Personal Glimpse at a Favorite Author.......2000-12-26
This is a most enjoyable book allowing a glimpse into the life of one of my favorite authors. It was interesting to learn about the situations that molded the life of James Herriot (Alf Wight).
The Real James Herriot.......2000-08-21
-James Herriot was a country animal doctor who recanted his life into stories, which became All Creatures Great and Small and other books and audios. His son, Jim Wight, upon his father's death, composed a tribute to a man we all thought we knew in The Real James Herriot. The abridged audio version is narrated by TV's James Herriot, actor Christopher Timothy. His familiar tramping of the characters and Herriot's words makes him the perfect choice to read this veneration.

Terrific, lively, an epic journey through Upper Burma.......1997-04-19
Bertil Lintner was the first westerner to visit Kachin state of Upper Burma since the early 1960s. He and his Shan wife and newborn child travelled all across the insurgent-held territories of Upper Burma in what was one of the great adventures of the 1980s. Linter provides tremendous political detail on the area he travelled through. A great book. Absolutely superb reading
Book Description
Deborah Yashar analyzes the contemporary and uneven emergence of Latin American indigenous movements--addressing both why indigenous identities have become politically salient in the contemporary period and why they have translated into significant political organizations in some places and not others. She argues that ethnic politics can best be explained through a comparative historical approach that analyzes three factors: changing citizenship regimes, social networks, and political associational space--providing insight into the fragility and unevenness of Latin America's third wave democracies.

The archipelago of Indonesia is a birder's paradise, with 17 percent of the world's species represented, 381 of which can be found nowhere else on earth. It's a rare pleasure to see the birds of Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara, of Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Irian Jaya, a pleasure which takes a good bit of preparation, organization, and advance detail. Fielding's Birding Indonesia is as fine a guide (to the region, the logistics, and the birds) as you could want. Take the chapter on Maluku, for example. An easy reference page tells you at once that the ferry to Halmahera takes an hour, basic accommodations are available at Anu's Birdwatcher's Home, it's hot and humid always and very wet April through August, and that Standardwings and Invisible Rails, plus 24 other indigenous, rare species, are there for the viewing. With luscious color photos and reliable, practical particulars, Jepson's guide is the perfect blend of inspiration and information. -Stephanie Gold
Customer Reviews:
Excellent but in Need of Updating.......2004-01-21
This book is an excellent guide to the varied nature reserves and many other sites of Indonesia not just to birders, but in fact to all travellers interested in wildlife.
The coverage of national parks and remote islands/forests is better than could be found in any other guidebook, and the wealth of detial on transport and accomodation options is impressive.
Unfortunately some of the information in this guide is now dated though - in many areas forests have been cut down, birds eliminated, accomodation closed since the book was written - and of course prices have gone up. An updated 2nd edition would be very welcome, but I guess there is little chance of that happening...
In the meantime, try to get hold of a copy of this book if you plan to visit Indonesia!
