    Book Description

Combining two disciplines—posing and wedding portraiture—this professional resource helps photographers create flattering poses to build the best possible portraits and highest possible sales. Photographers are taught how to position the head, shoulders, torso, arms, hands, legs, and feet to correct figure flaws, make a client feel relaxed, and evoke a dynamic image that tells a story or defines a relationship. The challenges of shooting on location are addressed with tips for adjusting poses in any situation. A discussion of body language and how small adjustments can change an entire mood provides photographers with the ability to help their clients convey a variety of desired messages, whether elegant, sexy, or playful. Standing, seated, and floor poses are covered along with specific techniques for photographing brides, grooms, and wedding parties.

    1 out of 5 stars Very Disorganized!.......2007-07-12

Sample pictures do not have a clear description of which poses are good or bad. You have to read text which is usually in different pages to determine the expalantion of the poses.

Writer is not clear in his explanations and is hard to follow.

I will not buy any other books by this author.

1 out of 5 stars Not at all what I had hoped.........2007-03-27

This book did not have the creative and interesting posing techniques I had hoped for. Outdated is the best word I can think of to describe this book.

1 out of 5 stars Utterly disappointing, do not buy this book!.......2007-03-11

I cant begin to describe how utterly useless this book is. The title suggested a book that would provide eduction and insight to posing for portrait and wedding photography: the reality is so far from the truth you wouldnt believe!

The poses and photos shown are amatuer, pathetic and laughable... at best. I constantly had to show my girlfriend the photos and commentary and we would collapse into fits of laughter....in fact, that might be the one positive comment I can make: it's a good laugh!

The photos used are very old (lots of 1980's glam fashion here) and the models are stiff and ill at ease. They look more like firing squad victums than examples of portrait and wedding subjects. The poses are over-done, look fake and staged to a painful degree.

To top it off, there is little teaching or recognisable educational structure to this book. I read it (a painful process) from start to finish and felt I learnt nothing. Nada, zip, zero. What a waste of time and money.

Do yourself a big favour and DO NOT buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Best one I have read .......2007-02-16

My model (daughter) and I use this book as our posing bible.
It has improved the appearance of our photos one hundred percent.
By reading the book, we now have the ability to spot "bad" poses and to work out better ones.
I never realized there was so much to hand, feet and head position that went into making THE photo you are looking for.
If you only purchase one book to help you grow as a portrait photographer, this is the one.
Don't expect pretty people in pretty poses, this is a how to book that builds from one pose to next.

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2006-11-09

This book was just what I was looking for! All of the tips and hints throughout the book have made me a more conscious photographer. The art in the book shows what you should and shoud not do while posing clients. It's an advantage to see the good and the bad right next to each other to advance personal critques.

4 out of 5 stars Series keeps going strong........2006-09-21

Keiji Nakazawa, Barefoot Gen: Life After the Bomb (New Society, 1989)

Volume 3 of Nakazawa's justly famous four-volume series sees life settling down for Gen Nakaoka and family, but "settling down" is a relative term. Gen's mother decides, like most of her neighbors, to flee Hirsohima and go to Eba, the nearest town of any size, to see if the family can find shelter, work, and food by staying with an old school friend of hers. The friend is more than happy to take them in, but her mother-in-law and two children take an instant dislike to the Nakaokas, and set about finding ways to drive them out. Gen gets a job caring for a bomb victim in town, and life, as much as it can, settles into a routine. Ryuji, who first made an appearance in The Day After, pops up again, as well.

Unlike The Day After, New Society prefaced this one with only a "the story thus far" sheet, having presumably learned their lesson with volume 2, and Life After the Bomb is a far better book for it. Nakazawa's story is presented here unadorned, leaving the reader to ferret out the deeper meanings while watching Gen's transformation from the exuberant, but somewhat thoughtless, child of the first volume into the caring, responsible individual he becomes by the end of the series. It is a feature of good series that the characters tend to get stronger in their characterization as the series goes along, and Barefoot Gen is no exception to this rule; Gen, who started out (by design, one thinks) as something of a caricature, has become a real, three-dimensional character here, and that's a wonderful thing. *** ½

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful testament to the strength of the human spirit.......2003-05-10

Barefoot Gen: Life After The Bomb is volume three of a four part series. The atom bomb has been dropped on Hiroshima, destroying most of the city, killing many people, and causing others to become sick with radiation sickness. Gen's hair is falling out from radiation exposure. He, his mother, and his newborn sister have to leave to survive. His mother can think of only one person to turn to, Kiyo, her childhood friend in the town of Eba. But the people of Eba are afraid the Hiroshima survivors have a strange contagious illness. Kiyo's family and the whole town treat them with suspicion and contempt.

As refugees, Gen and his mother have to find food, money, and shelter in a hostile environment. He takes a job caring for a rich man's brother who has been quarantined and left to die by the family because he has radiation sickness. Gen's compassion, humanity, and determination make this an inspiring book about the strength of the human spirit. The close loving values of his family are in sharp contrast to the narrow-minded self interest of the people in the Eba community.

The work has been wonderfully translated from the Japanese original: Hadashi no Gen. It was originally published in serial form in 1972 and 1973 in Shukan Shonen Jampu, the largest weekly comic magazine in Japan, with a circulation of over two million. The drawings are all in black and white. This US edition was published as part of a movement to translate the book into other languages and spread its message. It is a powerful testimony to the strength of the human spirit and the horrors of nuclear war. There are a few introductory essays at the front of the book that help to put this book into perspective. It is a tragic but uplifting story that I highly recommend for anyone interested in the topic. This and the other volumes in the series are important books for their message on the dangers of nuclear war.

5 out of 5 stars You will smile and cry at the same time.......2003-04-13

A poignant story in cartoon form that brings home the horrors of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan in 1945 yet manages to show the love and courage that survived through the story of Gen. 7 years old Gen and his mother survives the bombing but see the father and two brothers die before their eyes. Homeless, starving and ill they struggle to survive but never lose their humanity.

An excellent book for children and adults.

5 out of 5 stars Required reading for everyone!!!!!.......2001-06-21

This is not really a children's book- I would recommend this book to anyone from age 12 and up.

I am Japanese, and I was given this book by my dad in Japanese when I was eight years old. I have not been able to forget this book since, so I was thrilled to come across this book in English and I had to get it!!! Having not read the book in almost two decades, it was like reading it all over again with a much more mature (hopefully) perspective. This book reduced me to tears again as it did the first time.

This is a work about the universal theme of love, family, peace, hope, and war. Although it is set in World War II Japan, it is really not about "the" war and does not take any sides but rather represents war and its devastation from a very personal point of view, as seen by a young boy living in Hiroshima during world War II. In fact, this book was harshly criticized for being anti-patriotic in Japan when it was first published for refusing to take the Japanese side. Those criticisms disregard the whole point of the book, which is about war in general and the devastation of the people involved in it regardless of the side they are on. I was never able to forget this book after reading it as a child, and I can't recommend this book highly enough. Powerful. Riveting. I can read this a hundred times and be reduced to tears every time by its poignant message of peace.

      Book Description

After the Supreme Court's rejection of legal movie censorship in the 1950's and the demise of the Hays Production Code in the 1960's, various public groups have emerged as media watch dogs, replacing nearly all other sources of control. Responding to explicit violence against women, negative stereotypes of gay and lesbian images, "racist" representations, and "blasphemous" interpretations of the Bible, groups from both Left and Right have staged protests in front of theaters and boycotted movie studios. The New Censors shows how groups on the Left empowered by social movements in the 1960's, and groups on the Right propelled by the successes of the New Christian Right and "The Moral Majority," have used similar strategies in attempting to control movie content.

The New Censors, the first study of the complex ways movies have been shaped in the years since the demise of the Code, covers a wide range of movies, protests, and government actions. From feminists against "Dressed to Kill," to religious campaigns against "The Last Temptation of Christ," to homosexuals' ire over "Basic Instinct," Lyons links a study of public outrage against movies to the broader culture wars over "family values," pornography, and various lifestyle issues.

This book provides a contemporary history of controversial movies and a timely discussion of how cultural politics continues to affect the movie industry.

If you're interested in video arcade games from the 80s, this book will disappoint you. The content is VERY pinball-centric, with only passing mentions of arcade cabinets here and there.

        Not what I expected.

The market is a big determiner of what these games go for. The minute this book hit the stands it was out of date. Bill Kurtz fails to touch the pulse of collectors in this guide as it appears to be more ego gratification than a viable resource. And he considers himself in the business?...

I wasn't planning on buying this book due to the price. Boy, was I glad I did! Tons of pictures and information. I'm already trying to hunt down one of my all time favorite arcade games; Wrestlefest (Not mentioned or pictured in the book, but I was inspired.)

1 out of 5 stars Beware of this time waster.......2005-09-28

The book's structure, arranged by knowledge group (e.g. quality and HR) rather than by phase is not helpful and is the first of many problems with this text. Probably the greatest flaw is not emphasizing the inputs, outputs, and tools and techniques of each phase, which is a big part of the PMP exam. The book also goes into excessive detail in certain areas (e.g. EVA calculation) and ignores other very important areas that are part of the exam.

There are much better alternatives to this prep book.

1 out of 5 stars Please avoid this book.......2004-07-18

This book is a mediocre source for preparing for the PMP. It contains too many errors, inaccurate information and it is loaded with irrelevant information for the pmp test. if you do not want to pass the pmp test then read this book.

        Book Description

Hailed as the Thomas Edison and Henry Ford of Silicon Valley, Robert Noyce was a brilliant inventor, a leading entrepreneur, and a daring risk taker who piloted his own jets and skied mountains accessible only by helicopter. Now, in The Man Behind the Microchip, Leslie Berlin captures not only this colorful individual but also the vibrant interplay of technology, business, money, politics, and culture that defines Silicon Valley. Here is the life of a giant of the high-tech industry, the co-founder of Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel who co-invented the integrated circuit, the electronic heart of every modern computer, automobile, cellular telephone, advanced weapon, and video game. With access to never-before-seen documents, Berlin paints a fascinating portrait of Noyce: he was an ambitious and intensely competitive multimillionaire who exuded a "just folks" sort of charm, a Midwestern preacher's son who rejected organized religion but would counsel his employees to "go off and do something wonderful," a man who never looked back and sometimes paid a price for it. In addition, this vivid narrative sheds light on Noyce's friends and associates, including some of the best-known managers, venture capitalists, and creative minds in Silicon Valley. Berlin draws upon interviews with dozens of key players in modern American business--including Andy Grove, Steve Jobs, Gordon Moore, and Warren Buffett; their recollections of Noyce give readers a privileged, first-hand look inside the dynamic world of high-tech entrepreneurship. A modern American success story, The Man Behind the Microchip illuminates the triumphs and setbacks of one of the most important inventors and entrepreneurs of our time.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiration for those with ADD!.......2007-09-25

Robert Noyce had all of the significant traits of ADD. Any parent devastated by their child's diagnosis should read this to see what one can accomplish when one uses one's strengths. This book shows the positive side of ADD.

The book gets a bit detailed in some spots, and is overly repetitive in others, but overall is an interesting read.

5 out of 5 stars Get things open !.......2007-07-13

The author uses a lot of first hand material still available from people close to Bob Noyce. You will eat it fast, because you can get the "life mood" from well synthesized private life and public life smartly chosen events. The story of a guy that did put the moral value driven face of America high, from the cubicle to the world stage. The explanations around the new "silicon valley" management style are also very didactic, and has more value in it than most of expensive seminars. You can get the essence of it.
... In some places , it is close to hagiography, probably the beyond the grave aura of Bob Noyce ...and you can get contaminated...

4 out of 5 stars Raises the Bar for biography.......2006-03-19

The book has a fascinating subject and is well written. It fully captures and holds your attention. The author is very deft in handling arguments or controversies Noyce was involved in, presenting facts without bias. The book is even-handed and intelligent.

From a literary point of view, I think the book raises the bar in terms of biograpical research. I've read a lot of biographies, and I've never seen one as well documented as this. Almost every sentenced can be traced back to its source. In addition, it has original research. I believe the author is responsible for discovering that Noyce's NDR diode was at least coincident with Esaki's Noble-prize winning work. Overall, an excellent read.

3 out of 5 stars Slanted and Incomplete.......2005-12-31

I've spent 30 plus years in this and related industries. As a partial introduction to IC's and their "market successful" agents, it is OK. As entertainment it is good, just don't forget you are being entertained! As a biography of Noyce it is only partial. That the rest of the story with Jack Kilby, Texas Instuments, and non-Noyce IC industry and players is missing makes it very bad history. That the patent fight history and the rules for patents, mainly that continuous work on ideas must be shown or it's "abandoned", are not covered makes it very much a dis-eduational offering. The big truth, stated deep in the book, that "Credit floats up.", almost makes the reading good, but not quite!

        5 out of 5 stars a vanished Silicon Valley.......2005-09-12

Berlin has performed an amazing amount of detailed research into Noyce's life. She takes us back to the years when the semiconductor industry was born, and shows us how Noyce helped make it flourish in Silicon Valley.

A striking passage describes how Noyce anticipated the observation of negative differential resistance in a tunnel diode. Some 18 months before Leo Esaki in Tokyo discovered it. Esaki would win the Nobel in Physics for his work. In one of these what-ifs, Noyce could easily have taken that for himself.

By the way, the book's explanation of negative resistance is a trifle awkward. The quantum mechanical phenomenon cannot be easily explained to a general audience. (As a grad student, I had the same problem of discussing this about my research, to laymen.) But if it puzzles you, remember that it also eluded a lot of people in the 1950s.

You might already be familiar with the broad outlines of how Noyce, Moore and others worked for Robert Shockley, and then left en masse in disgust at his management style. But Berlin furnishes here far more detail than is commonly known. About how Noyce agonised and reluctantly left Shockley.

Likewise, with the later tale of Fairchild Semiconductor and how Noyce and Moore would in turn leave that. This time to found Intel (with Grove). Berlin gives much more detail on this broad outline, that explains the motivations of Noyce and his associates.

Some readers might be amused to see that the CEO of Fairchild resisted handing out stock options to employees, in the grounds that this was "creeping socialism". Which played no small part in the exodus of its best people.

The book describes a Silicon Valley that has vanished.

The film The Longest Day brought international fame to the D-Day capture of the "Pegasus" bridge by British glider troops. The Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry were one of six infantry regiments selected to serve as glider units with Britain's two airborne divisions in World War II. Denys Edwards was part of the Oxford and Bucks company that captured Pegasus Bridge and served with the regiment to the end of the war.

5 out of 5 stars Top Airborne book.......2006-12-02

Most WWII buffs will be familiar with the Pegasus Bridge assault from the Ambrose book, if that is you, then please consider getting this fine book too. Denis Edwards was one of the Coup de Main party who landed by the bridge in Horsa gliders at 12.16am on the morning of D-Day. The fact he was actually there gives this book a great level of authenticity and his easy-going writing style makes it a pleasantly informative read. Of course the book covers far more than the events of D-Day, it continues through to the crossing of the Rhine, which for the Ox and Bucks was every bit as costly as the Normandy campaign.

A fine book, with insights that only the combat soldier can offer.

4 out of 5 stars A Good View for Americans........2003-02-17

I bought this book at the Pegasus Bridge Museum while on a tour of the D-Day battlesites. I was fascinated by our tour guide, a retired British Brigadier, and his stories of Major John Howard. This book adds to most American's views of the D-Day invasion. I recommend this book even though Mr. Edwards is a bit full of himself, as are most "been there done that" combat veterans.

            5 out of 5 stars A brilliant diatribe written by a bureaucrat's bureaucrat.......2006-06-02

Everyone once in a while a work comes along that redefine the way humanity organizes itself. The Bible, the Magna Carta, the Unibomber Manifesto, and Mr. Dunn's book all can be placed in that category.

Having attended his classes while in graduate school, I internalized his teachings and made myself a better bureaucrat than anyone could has imagined. Every day I use his book to enlighten me on the manners and ways of building a better bureacracy in my village panchayat in Viknashapathanam District of Andra.

5 out of 5 stars Informational Structure of Policy Analysis: Dunn's approach.......2000-04-06

            C. Nicandro Cruz UNAM. México

This book is an precise and extensive endeavor for understanding the problems, boudaries and potential use and application of knowledge for improving governmental performance.

Te basis of Dunn's approach to policy analysis, is that it depends to the production and transformation of five policy relevant information (about policy problems, policy futures, policy actions, policy outcomes and policy performance) through five policy-analytic procedures (problem-structuring, forecasting, recommendation, monitoring, and evaluation).

Perhaps the most important distinction is that problem structuring, "...which affects the use and asessment of the other four procedures, is really a metamethod (method of methods) that funtions as central regulator of the overall process of policy analysis." (page 65)

This analytical framework provide one of the most single effective way to analyze public policies and government programs, where the most important analyst's role is both to generate useful knowledge for decision making in all phases of policy process, and to generate plussible arguments by analythical procedures.

It is an ideal book for bachelor and graduate students interested in public problems that face governements, and in the role that can play all policy analyst in policy making.

Dunn's contribution to the study and use of policy analysis in academic and professional activities its out of question. 06-04-200
