The Nude: A Study in Ideal Form
ASIN: 0415170990 |
Book Description
Erotic Ambiguities explores how feminist artists have responded to traditional depictions of the "ideal female body" which proliferate throughout contemporary visual culture. Across photography, fashion, painting and performance art, McDonald shows how feminist artists have employed the idea of ambiguity to counter negative images of women and to dismantle the elusive classical ideal enshrined in "the nude."
Examining the work of key artists from Barbara Kruger, Judy Chicago, and Mary Duffy, to Zoe Leonard, Tracey Moffat, Pat Barrington and Sally Smart, McDonald traces the shift in feminist art practices from the early deconstruction of patriarchal representations to the more ambivalent contemporary practices.

Multi faceted Feminist perspective on the nude in art.......2007-01-11
This is an interesting book because of the diverse points of view it presents about the female nude in art and how different artists and scholars think about the nude. There is a lot of diverse perspectives on the female nude in femininist circles from anything goes to discomfort about female nudity. Those perspectives are presented in this well written book and I found the artists, the art and the viewpoints interesting. Again and again the author talks about the how the role of ambiguity is part of the nude in art regardless of who made the art and who is looking at the art.The last chapter of this book went off into weirdness for me but so what? Most of the book is interesting and compelling.
Book Description
You've almost certainly faced the problem: you've got an album or box of old photographs but almost all lack any identification. Family Chronicle's special publication can't help you identify the subject but it can help you with dating when the picture was taken - often within a couple of years. A number of books have already been published that describe how to date old photographs but they rely almost entirely on descriptions: Family Chronicle's book is almost all reproductions of old photographs of known date. There are over 650 pictures covering the period from the 1840s to the 1920s. By comparing your undated pictures to the examples, you will be able to compare clothing and hair fashion, the poses adopted by the subject and the background settings and establish a date within a couple of years. The book provides convincing evidence that our ancestors were at least as fashion conscious as we are today and that those fashions changed just as frequently.

Good Beginning for Dating Old Photographs.......2007-07-23
For someone just beginning the process of dating old photos, this book is very handy. It covers the basics in a concise way, giving an overall look at what is involved. In addition to the 8 pages of general information, there are 85 pages of real photographs with known dates. The only drawback as I see it is that most of the photos are of Canadian people, and that many of them do not seem to be dressed typically for the time period. Anyone purchasing this book will soon want to "graduate" to Taylor's Uncovering Your Ancestors through Family Photographs, for example.
Dating Old Photgraphs 1840-1929.......2006-08-17
I really enjoyed the book but I feel the quality of the photographs were not as vivid as they could be. It is a good reference for my photos.
Not Worth the Money .......2006-04-23
I found that this book is not worth the money I spent for it. It is more like a magazine than a book. There are only 100 pages, (three of which are advertisements) and most of them are filled with old photographs with no explanations. The photos are classified in 5 year intervals and no detailed reasons given for why these photos are in those intervals. There is only 5 pages of text eplaining how to date these photographs and about half the text is used to give you a brief and very general history of early photography. The book, if that is what you want to call it, does not do a fair or even adequate job of helping a collector date old photographs.
Too little text.......2003-08-11
This magazine is less than 100 pages long and only five (5) pages are devoted to text describing how to date photos. While there is some useful information, it is too little. The rest of the pages are just old photos that are grouped by era, with no annotations to help you determine how the photo is dated. If you really want to know how to date photos as the title suggests, try a different book.

With some cropping & border you could frame most pages.......2005-06-18
I purchased my calendar before I read the other review, since mine wasn't opened, I went ahead & opened mine. Yes, there are some smaller pictures of other movie poster versions that was put out advertising the same movie in various places. Most are on the left side of the calendar and the right side has round circles for the dates of the month. Regardless of the mini posters, you still would have to crop the poster because of the days of the month. I do think they should have shown how each months poster was actually displayed and not just mini versions of the movie posters. I like seeing all of the different versions for the same movie and especially like the ones that are from Japan and the 1 from France. If you don't only want the posters for your walls you can go to your local craft or framing store and have them crop and dry mount the calendar page or it can also be cropped out using a border.
Not so long ago I worked at a bookstore and I if the customer had come up to the front counter and asked to open a calendar, I am sure they would have opened for you, especially since there where no other calendars open. That's just good customer service. Plus I bet by November when all of 2006 calendars are out there will be at least 1 calendar that is open so you can see and page through it. You also have to remember that the gentleman & I that purchased this calendar did so the same month as Episode 3 "Revenge of the Sith" movie was released during the summer, not during the height of calendar buying season.
Big disappointment - awful layout!.......2005-05-11
I am a fan of calendars which can outlive their dates by being art, sometimes framable art. As a longtime Star Wars fan this calendar looked great - where else can you get a nifty set of miniature (but not TOO small) Star Wars posters? Unfortunately, I only saw shrink-wrapped calendars. The cover is beautiful (though mine came dinged, of course), and the back pictures several of the featured posters. The Episode I poster (January, 2006) example is also pictured on the back... it is this, in fact, that tempted me to title this review "False Advertising." At least very deceptive advertising! Bottomline is that if you are hoping for nice, CLEAN miniatures of the movie posters, you will be VERY disappointed! On every poster/month (except, conveniently, the Episode I example) are little insets of foreign or uniques posters, which essentially ruin each one for any display as a complete poster. These are interesting (though I've seen them all before), but the fact they are printed over portions of the posters is unfortunate and make each poster unusable as an individual "mini-poster" (although that was probably the intent)! Why not just print a big red "COPY" on the poster and be done with it?! AND why, oh why, not show actual examples of the dreadful layout on the cover -- at least now I know why they were all kept shrink-wrapped in the store!! DO NOT BUY THIS CALENDAR -- send the publishers a message!!

Book Description
The collaboration of Schubert and the poet Wilhelm MÜller produced some of the best loved of nineteenth-century lieder--in particular Die schöne MÜllerin. Professor Youens shows how this archetypal tale of love and rejection is reflected in the poet's own experience. She considers other poets' explorations of the subject, and looks at other musical settings of MÜller's mill poems. Above all she examines MÜller's permutation of the literary legends as an exploration of erotic obsession, delusion, frenzy, disillusionment and death and the way in which Schubert altered MÜller's vision when the poetic cycle became a musical text.

Customer Reviews:
it's all true.......2007-03-11
We had the good fortune to meet Brian Richardson at the arcade at Busch Gardens in Tampa, and he impressed us by succeeding at the "Wizard Wire" game ("Wacky Wire" in the book) ON THE FIRST TRY! Overall his strategies are right on track. Buy the book, it's all true!!!
Great Book.......2006-12-18
I've never been one to play those games at carnivals and fairs. This book caught my eye as something interesting and after reading all the reviews I wanted to know more. This book provides many hints and tips on how to win these types of games. It does not provide any illegal information or any method of cheating. Instead the author has practiced and practiced and figured out the tricks- the reason the carny can do it and you can't. He provides lists of the best games to play, the worst games to play, and a test to figure out your vision dominant eye. If you are ever tempted to play these types of games it is worth reviewing this book before going.
Good, but..........2006-08-27
I first saw mention of Mr. Richardson's book in Maxium a few months ago. I asked my wife to order it for me for my birthday, and received it last week.
All through high school and my first two years of college I worked as a game 'agent' for a small amusement park with a pretty good regular client base. We had 7 or so of the games he discusses in his book, and I worked in all of them on a pretty regular basis.
Most of what Brian describes in his book are techniques that I would share with my customers anyway...just because you know the 'secret' to doing something, doesn't mean you can do it. Sharing the 'secret' was a good sales pitch...Using Mr. Richardson's technique, I tried shooting out the star dozens of times...never once did I actually do it.
Anyway, he misses a few things...especially in the softball/milk bottle throw game. I'm not going to share it here, but there are some things about that game that any 'professional' should know. I was very impressed, however, with his description of the Wacky Wire. We used that game for maybe a season or two...it was another one where I knew 'how' to do it, but usually couldn't. With a little practice, I think anyone who reads that chapter should be good to go for that game.
Anyway, overall I thought it was a great effort, and I also enjoyed the section on roller coasters.
Failure no more..........2006-07-25
About a week ago, i was visiting Atlanta and I decided to go to Six Flags. A friend and I went on a few rides, but then we decided it was time to play some games. After a few games and no prizes, we go to take a break and watch others fail. While waiting at the "Wacky Wire" game, a man approached us and offered to pay for the game, show us how to win, and even said he'd give us the prize... Well, a few dollars later he beat the wacky wire game. I was amazed, I had never seen anyone win. After giving us the prize (a 7 foot lion), he gave us "The Secrets of Amusement Park Games... Revealed! (Third Edition)." He then went to the "Wacky Wire" chapter and showed us how the book says to do it which was the exact same way he did it.
After leaving Six Flags, we went back to the hotel and read the book. Let me tell you, this is no rip off, the games seem so much easier now and I can't wait until the next time I play them. Thanks to Brian, I have a gigantic lion, his book, and a new found confidence. He is not only a good man, but he writes a great book. Thank You for everything Brian.
Met... and Won!.......2006-06-16
I met the author at Six Flags Fiesta Texas a while ago. He gave me a copy of his book, wowed me at the Wacky Wire game, and won me a GIGANTIC realistic leopard plush... you know, the ones that you always walk past, drool over, and walk on empty-handed? Needless to say, I was more than eager to read his secrets.
I read bits and pieces of the book throughout the day, but when I arrived home, there was no sign of it! I learned later that a good friend of mine (who had been at the park with me) had taken the book with her to Seaworld. She came back with a gigantic Shamoo whale plushie, a token of the tricks she had learned for the Ring Toss game.
Now I'm reading up, practicing, and I can't wait to wow my friends on our next Fiesta Texas trip. Thanks so much!!

A former hospital administrator writes this review........2006-06-17
Have you ever wondered how someone that was dumber than you ended up being your boss or CEO? That really used to frost me when I was in my late twenty's and early thirty's and then I figured it out. This book does provide insight into how people ascend to the top of the heap. The problem with the book is that it takes what the CEO's say was the reason they made it and assumes they told the complete story.
Of all the CEO's that I have interacted with, I find that honesty is not something that I would put on their short list. I do not mean to imply that there is no truth in this book, there is. It is just not the complete story. From what I observed in 20 years, CEO's are in their positions because they know the right people, kiss the right behind and are willing to do whatever their boss wants. Yes, everyone has a boss even the CEO. If you have ever sat in a board meeting and watched the CEO suck up to the Chairman of the board you know what I mean.
The problem with ascending to the top of the heap is that you need to be able to compromise your principles to do it. If you aren't willing to do that, start you own business. Then you will get paid what you are truly worth, and you won't have to answer to someone other than yourself.
Can you learn something from this book? Absolutely. But, can you learn everything that you need to know to become a CEO? Absolutely not.
It is an interesting read for as far as it goes. It just does not go far enough.
A great book for people who understand the power of self-development........2005-10-26
This book was great. Simple, easy to implement keys to success that make sense. This book helped me understand how I can tweak my inter-personal style to let my strong areas shine. Anyone who disrespects this book does not know the power of self-development, and will not benefit. It is an easy read. I plan to read it once a year to keep myself on track. Oh, and it is great for anyone who wants to advance their career, not just those who aspire to become the CEO.
You will will still have to think for yourself.......2005-01-25
Ms. Benton is a top-tier image consultant, and the first book of hers I read was Lion's Don't Need to Roar. That was a great book about projecting the "right" image. I decided to read this book because I wanted to hear her insights about the successful CEOs she has worked with.
The book presents a lot of interesting information. Twenty-two vital traits are enough to cover just about every trait, but some might be more vital than others. Obviously, any book written by a consultant to the rich and powerful has to be weighed by the need not to bite the hand that feeds you. Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading the anecdotes, and I always like to hear positive things about those who occupy the seats of power (mainly because I hope that good people do get ahead).
But as far as climbing the mountain of successs by learning to think like a CEO, the caption for chapter six probably sums it up nicely: "every climber is different, and it's important for you to understand those differences." Reading history is not the same as making history. Hey, and writing book reviews isn't the same as writing books, either!
This is a good book to read on airplane trips, but don't expect it to be your master plan for taking over the world. You will still have to think for yourself and do your own heavy lifting.
Solid perspective........2003-09-29
Forget the people who claim that this book is a rehash. They need to read it again and stop skimming chapter titles and skipping pages. Yes, a lot of this material is covered in other leadership books. There are basics that every reader of this type of book simply has to know. The author can't assume that they know, so she presents the basics.
Buy this book for the unique content: The quotes. Real quotes from real CEO's. Dozens of real life examples of what goes on in the life and in the mind of the man (or woman) at the top.
If you want to see what motivates a CEO, it's in this book. If you want to see what a day in the life of a CEO is like, it's in this book. If you want to see how a CEO handles pressure situations, it's in this book.
The quotes alone are worth the 10 to 15 bucks. The easy, specific examples of things that you can say and do to improve your situation at work are just a bonus.
As a small business owner, I would like to thank Debra for helping me to bridge the gap between my home business and my career. This book showed me how the skills that I developed as an entrepreneur could be applied to my consulting job.
What prevented the book from being 5 stars? Author self reference. I realize that 'Lions Don't Need To Roar' is a great book, and cross promotion is all the rage, but borrowing the bulk of entire chapters from 'Lions' is a bit much.
Still, a great read.
I wish I'd known this when I started my career 12 years ago........2003-07-04
Some people could say this is common sense. But my years in corporate America has taught me it's not common practice. Benton lays out in a clear, succinct manner what the best leaders in business or in politics do to be effective. You'll recognize a lot of the traits in yourself and a lot in people that you admire. More importantly you'll be reminded of the importance of various attributes and will be given examples of how to use this information for yourself -- to become the effective individual that you want to be.
Even if you don't aspire to being "CEO" you still have to work with one so you might as well know and understand how they think to make your own life better.
Book Description
The provocative bestseller She’s Not There is the winning, utterly surprising story of a person changing genders. By turns hilarious and deeply moving, Jennifer Finney Boylan explores the territory that lies between men and women, examines changing friendships, and rejoices in the redeeming power of family. Told in Boylan’s fresh voice, She’s Not There is about a person bearing and finally revealing a complex secret. Through her clear eyes, She’s Not There provides a new window on the confounding process of accepting our true selves.
“Probably no book I’ve read in recent years has made me so question my basic assumptions about both the centrality and the permeability of gender, and made me recognize myself in a situation I’ve never known and have never faced . . . The universality of the astonishingly uncommon: that’s the trick of She’s Not There. And with laughs, too. What a good book.” —Anna Quindlen, from the Introduction to the Book-of-the-Month-Club edition.
Customer Reviews:
Overall a pleasant book.......2007-10-03
It is very interesting the past people that she did run into from her previous life as a male. However, one thing that sort of threw me off about the book was how it seemed to be disjointed and went from one time to a totally different time. I am still grateful for her courage in writing on it and have not been able to progress too far into the book so it may change my ideas, but I am just grateful that there are books dealing specifically with transitioning.
3.5 Stars ... A Moving and Amazing Story .......2007-06-27
This is the story of Jenny Boylan born James Boylan and her journey to become the woman she always believed she was.
Jenny Boylan undergoes a sex change operation so she can live out the rest of her life as a woman. This book tells us some of that story and what it was like for Jenny to be trapped inside the wrong body her whole life.
A thoughtful story...This book makes you question how much of who we are is unchangeable and how much is malleable? What does it mean to truly love someone? Why is it so hard for some to accept people who are different? Especially when we are really so much more alike than not?
I really enjoyed the Afterword by Richard Russo he offers a different perspective to the transformation of Jim to Jenny and shares insights to her story that she can't offer.
The sense of humor throughout this book was great. What an amazing, brave and difficult journey. She might not be an astronaut but she's pretty courageous none the less.
I find the topic of gender studies interesting and I have recently read two other books dealing with gender issues. If you enjoyed this book you might also want to read Why Gender Matters: What Parents and Teachers Need to Know about the Emerging Science of Sex Differences and Self-Made Man: One Woman's Journey into Manhood and Back I thought they were both very interesting and insightful.
Left me feeling sad.......2007-05-26
I give this book 4 stars because of it's easy readability and interesting(!) subject matter.A book to cetainly make one wonder and have sympathy for what some humans must suffer through. I liked the writing style (I know some readers/reviewers have not).
But the story to me is just so sad. I finished reading this a couple of weeks ago and wanted to see if my feelings "settled" a bit but they have not. I was not convinced by the end of the book that Jenny had found the peace she was searching for by changing genders. I don't know why but I "liked" the author better in the beginning when she was still James. I guess I bonded with him as a he. After the gender reassignment surgery I just wasn't "convinced" of Jenny's femaleness. Wearing skirts, long hair and diet cokes have nothing to do with femininity in my opinion.Kind of pathetic attempts actually. I realize some of that was his-into-her way of outwardly showing society who she "really" was/is. And I think some of it was dry humor, but I didn't laugh. I thought in the end it was pretty crummy what he/she did to his/her family/loved ones. I certainly wish Jenny peace and happiness but the book and story left me feeling sad and wondering if she's not "there" where in the world is she....now. Is she "there" now? And is her inner world so much different/better to her now as a woman?
Been there.......2007-05-24
Have no problems with which sex you're to show to the world? You're very fortunate. I've been in this world of sexual dysphoria for 40+ years and it's difficult to live normally. This book set everyone straight about this condition.
Support for Transgenders.......2007-05-10
This story of a transgender trying to get by in today's world is captivating and makes a great case study.

Book Description
On a spring morning in 1903, Major-General Sir Hector Macdonald, one of Britain's greatest military heroes, took his life in a hotel room in Paris. A few days later he was buried hastily in an Edinburgh cemetery as his fellow countrymen tried to come to terms with the fact that one of Scotland's most famous soldiers had ended his life rather than face charges against his character. The suicide and its aftermath created a national scandal and one which still reverberates long after those dramatic events—it is now clear that the official files dealing with his case, the papers of the Judge Advocate, have been destroyed. Fighting Mac tells the true story behind his disgrace and sheds new light on the myths and legends which grew up after his death. It also provides a compelling insight into what it was like for a ranker like Macdonald to enter the privileged territory of the officers mess in an elite Highland regiment, The Gordon Highlanders. Finally it examines the political and military background to Queen Victoria's little wars of empire and the conditions facing the ordinary soldier at home and abroad.

The Pentagon - It's More Mundane Than You Thought.......2003-02-22
This delightful book imparts great technical and historical data while simultaneously giving your sense of humor a terrific workout. The big, beleaguered building comes alive with purpose and structure thanks to the well-written and thoroughly researched text. Suddenly the geometric monster fits neatly into the tapestry of American foreign policy and the reader is given a window onto the foibles and passions of the thousands of citizens who enter the monolith each day. I highly recommend this fascinating book to anyone who has ever wondered about the importance of the Pentagon, and the impact of the strategies that emanate from it.

This book is both funny and functional -- I use it as a desk reference in my work counselling companies who have to work with, or sell to, the US military, as well as a random excuse to brighten the day.
Moreover, military officers I work with have started to recommend it to colleagues attending the services' staff colleges...not because there are no other reference books, but because this one tells you things that are useful in a way that makes you genuinely interested in learning more.
The Pentagon lore here is well-researched, and provides a terrific foundation for a primer on the parts of the US military with roots in The Building.
Better yet, it's a fine effort to bridge inter-service rivalries: you can read someone poking fun at those Other Guys with the Funny Uniforms and, while nobody's watching, actually appreciate the Other Guys' history, culture and lore.
My favourite parts are the ones about Classified Documents, and the civilian's guide to Missile Defense. Not only are these great examples of how Cateau and Levin make complex topics accessible with clear examples, but I just plain couldn't read these ones aloud to friends without laughing!
Okay, and the quiz on Navy Abbreviations catches even the most avid acronym interpreters!
The Pentagon for the Rest of Us.......2002-12-25
This funny and informative book will enable you to impress your friends with mystifying acronyms while providing insights into the ironies of the Byzantine blend of bureaucracy, magic, money and macho that fuel the high-tech beehive so appropriately shaped as the world's largest Pentagon. Perfect for the citizen who'd like to know more about how our military is "organized" and "managed" without a night course in government contracting or a trip down the flight path astride a laser guided missile.
It's da Bomb!.......2002-12-17
Written for the serious buffoon, I'd recommend this book as a lighthearted but informative read for those boring trips down the flight path astride a laser guided missile. Learn from this funny and informative book how to impress your friends with mystifying acronyms while gaining first-hand insights into the ironies of the Byzantine blend of bureaucracy, magic, money and macho that fuel the high-tech beehive so appropriately shaped as the world's largest Pentagon.

From the author: Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) hens frequently renest after disturbance on the nest, especially while laying or early during the incubation period. However, no record exists of Wild Turkey hens renesting after a successful hatch. We document three Wild Turkey hens that renested after having hatched a brood. None of the renests were successful.
