The idea behind this magnificent book is to pair stunning images from outer space alongside meaningful spiritual quotes from here on earth. Ultimately, the two work well together, suggesting the presence of a divine hand, or at least a divine order in the universe. Editor Michael Reagan deserves much praise for his keen visual eye, as well as his selection of quotes from the likes of Albert Einstein, Jane Goodall, Stephen Hawking, Dr. Seuss, Theodore Roethke, Carl Sagan, Mark Twain, and Annie Dillard.

Many of the photos were taken from the Hubble Space Telescope, offering fascinating glimpses into distant black holes and galaxies. Some images are vivid and romantic like a Renaissance painting. Some (such as the Voyager I photo of Jupiter) seem to suggest that Vincent van Gogh had a hand in painting the universe. Each photo has a concrete caption and clearly explains what is happening and where the image comes from.

With a hint of irony, Reagan placed the following quote beside the explosive, womb web photo of "Star Birth Region NGC 604": "Stars are like animals in the wild. We may see the young but never the actual birth, which is a veiled and secret event." - Heinz Pagels, Perfect Symmetry
It is quotes such as these that make readers feel especially blessed. If not yet true voyagers, we can at least become voyeurs into space and spirituality--the far reaches of our final frontiers. --Gail Hudson

5 out of 5 stars Brings a glimpse of wonder of our amazing universe to the coffee table.......2007-08-11

This work brings home the grandeur of our universe (and the creator behind it) as best as any book, video or special I have ever seen. The quotes from theologians, astronomers and prophets that accompany the images do not all point to a singular philosophy or faith, so do not be too hasty to write this tome off as a religious work or creationist propaganda. The photo prints are of superb quality and the quotations are well matched. My personal favorite quote is found on page 128, next to an image of a cluster of Massive Infant Stars: "I find it as difficult to understand a scientist who does not acknowledge the presence of a superior rationality behind the existence of the universe as it is to comprehend a theologian who would deny the advances of science. And there is certainly no scientific reason why God cannot retain the same relevance on our modern world that he held before we began probing His creation with telescope, cyclotron and space vehicles." -Wernher Braun
This text is also a fresh reminder that while popular, secular science writers often demonstrate a lack of wonder and exaggerate the claims of their theories, the real scientists, the Einsteins, Newtons and Keplers, regarded themselves as full of wonder and mere children who had stumbled upon a few pretty pebbles upon the ocean's beach (a paraphrase from Abraham Heschel's "A Philosophy of Judaism"). Regardless of your personal faith proclivities, if you understand that no human has all the answers (and perhaps not even very many) you will enjoy this book, guaranteed.

5 out of 5 stars The Hand of God - The Hubble View.......2007-02-11

This excellent collection of pictures from space presents an awesome and inspiring view of space through many of the Hubble photos accompanied by pertinent and profound quotes from thinking peple.

It is a marvelous and thought-provoking encounter with the heavens regardless of your religious views.

I have given it to my children and friends and received 5-star responses from all who see it.

5 out of 5 stars Could be written by the Hand of God..........2007-02-07

I am not one to give praise easily. In fact, I can't remember when I last reviewed a book. But this book is truly a work of art. It is very well written and will prick the conscience of any agnostic or non-believer. It's as if there is this giant puzzle which nobody has been able to put together, till Michael Reagan came along and assembled the pieces.
Well done, that man. I also believe this book should be in every Primary school library.

5 out of 5 stars from atheist to Christian.......2007-02-04

As a young atheist, I was numb to the Creator. And now, after God's mercy has brought me to Him through His Son Jesus Christ, I know the joy of worshipping Him. This is a book that, for me, leads the heart to humility and worship of the great Creator of all.

5 out of 5 stars Inspire Your Vision, Beautifully........2005-12-17

If you are looking for a book to provide snippets of inspiration for others who are dear to you, or, perhaps one that will spark your own prayer and devotional time, this may be the book you are seeking.

"The Hand of God" is a collection of photographs taken in space, many by the Hubble Telescope, showing the vast and awe-inspiring wonder of the universe. These photos, a new "eye on the heavens" show every manner of nebula, comet and star formation for the wondering earthbound traveler. Presented in deep and vivid colors, the photos are thoughtfully paired with inspirational quotations, both familiar and obscure.

Of the many gorgeous images, surprises abound. A view of Jupiter's Great Red Spot and its surroundings looks every bit like a segment of Van Gogh's "Starry Night". A shimmering white cross-like photograph of Galaxy NGC 4640A is coupled with these lines from an ancient Jewish proverb: "God said to Abraham, 'But for me, you would not be here.' 'I know that, Lord,' Abraham answered, 'but were I not here, there would be no one to think about you.'"

Here are page after page of vast and panoramic views--both in word and in photograph, ranging from the tender greens and blues of our own earth, to a halo-like image of a filament eruption on our sun.

One would not classify this as a coffee table book per se, since its 8" x 8 1/2" dimensions are much smaller. It is perhaps best called an end table or nightstand book, suitable for an occasional glance or prolonged study. Either way, the unfamiliar images are profoundly inspiring, and invite the reader to move beyond Arthur Schopenhauer's observation, "Everyone takes the limits of his own vision for the limits of the world." This book is sure to expand your limits and inspire your vision, beautifully.

      Book Description

Long ago, in a time when the worlds of men were ruled by Wizards, the greatest Magi of all, Zagyg, built a mighty fortress. Overlooking the small town of Yggsburgh, on the heights of the Four Tors, Castle Zagyg became a place of power where the Mage worked his arcane sorceries. He wove spells of great wonder and explored the ethereal dimensions where even gods and men fear to tread. His power knew no match in those days of wonder. But, as all things end, so did the reign of Zagyg. Where he went, whether slain or lost, none could say. The good folk of Yggsburgh could only say that no power reigned in Zagyg. In time, the fortress and its dungeons became a haunted place of nightmare and terror. Strange lights beckoned from her high towers and the howls of cursed creatures could be heard on the windswept slopes of the Four Tors. Ever did men look upon that place with horror and dread.

      4 out of 5 stars A wonderful surprise........2006-06-14

I stumbled across this book and had no idea what a find it was to be. I picked it up on recognition of Tom Bodett's name even though I was unaware that he is an author. This is a whimsical, amusing, touching ride that carries throughout the entire book. A large cast of characters reside in this book and you have to stay close or you'll lose track of the threads that eventually tie this story together. I have shared this book with many and all have been greatly impressed. I highly recommend this book.

      5 out of 5 stars wonderful read.......2003-02-17

this book was a great read and so very fun. It follows many charcters and then shows how they all converge at the end, it's just a great story and a beautifully written novel.

4 out of 5 stars Well worth reading - what a story teller ...........2001-09-06

I picked this up in a bookstore because I recognized Tom's name (probably like most of America) and had no idea what a great story teller he could be. The book takes different stories and weaves them together in a most clever fashion. Makes me wonder if it wasn't composed as separate books - then combined - Ha! Caught Ya! That's the secret! I certainly didn't guess what was coming next and that made the ride even more enjoyable. The characters had depth - no broding overwrought fatalists - and they were living very real lives. The humor that is 'snuck in' is great and adds to the whole experience. Good stuff here.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2000-05-04

I just finished reading this wonderful book and felt my heart warmed over. Tom Bodett's writing took me into his characters lives with such grace that they became like my own family. Funny, sweet and thought provoking. I am off to read more of Tom Bodett today!

      5 out of 5 stars It's a Delight.......2000-03-16

The audiotape version of the Free Fall of Webster Cummings is Tom Bodett at his best. His writing is superb. He makes me laugh, makes me think, causes a lump to swell in my throat. I can't think of a more pleasant way to spend a couple of hours.

        Book Description

How long have psychotherapists been depicted in films? Nearly as long as there have been films—or psychotherapists, for that matter. This isn't surprising if one considers that the Freudian revolution in psychology and the invention of motion pictures occurred at about the same time. What may be surprising is the sheer number of times that psychotherapists, in their many guises, have shown up in the movies and how their depiction has reflected changing social attitudes about psychotherapy over the last century.

This comprehensive worldwide filmography examines over 5000 movies. Films in which mental health professionals appear, or in which others act in that capacity, are listed alphabetically. A preface explains the criteria for a film's inclusion, and a lengthy introduction and guide to the filmography explores the changing social attitudes mirrored by the movies. Appendices list the titles by decade; alternate titles for many films; recent releases; and qualifying adult films.

The book has a great range of new character directions, from expanding the ones that are already existant to complete new prestige classes,(i.e. Savagekin and Ursa totemic)The book contains great story lines and together with the history of the races of the Alliance it provides a big content to a new campaign hosted in the world of Azeroth. For the experiences players it is a great addition, certainly for the ones that like just a tad more diversity then the main world of warcraft rpg book already has to offer.

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars Good info.......2007-09-19

Lots of good tips although many are available from alternate sources. I listen to his radio show and he doesn't seem to have any other agenda than helping people. Good common sense guidance as well as some not so common sense info. Not a necessity but certainly an excellent overall guide to protect yourself and be a smart consumer

3 out of 5 stars Some good ideas, some terrible ones. .......2004-09-27

Clark begins his book by saying that not all of the suggestions in his book are going to work for you. He admits that he doesn't use all of the tips himself. As a result some of his suggestions are accurate and useful, but a few are not.

I found these tips useful. He recommends using coupons where available. Shopping at discount food stores like Aldi's or SaveALot. Before you get major dental work done, get a second opinion. Eat before you go to the movies and avoid the concession stand. At a fast food restaurant get one or two items from the dollar menu instead of the big combo.

This suggestion seemed too extreme for anyone that actually enjoys video games. Follow this advice and your kids will be very disappointed. He suggests buying playstation one games instead of playstation two games because the graphics are all the same. That's like saying McDonald's food is just as tasty as food from the Olive Garden. A more reasonable suggestion would be to never buy a game when it is new for $50+ dollars. You can find most games on half.com for a reasonable price after they are a year old. Everything I have ever ordered there has worked perfectly. Also there are lots of new, quality games for 19.99 in the greatest hits collection. I never pay more than $20.00 for a game.

All in all a good book, it will probably pay for itself in a few weeks if you follow just a few of his tips. The best idea would be to read it in Borders or Barns and Nobles, it probably won't take you more than two hours, less if you skim.

2 out of 5 stars Mostly common sense. Why buy common sense?.......2004-02-18

I'm a big fan of Clark Howard and his other books and radio show. They contain oodles of great money saving info. Clark's radio show and books have saved me well over $900 this year with useful info I did not know about. However, this book was a letdown.

Most everything in this book was common knowledge or common sense. Example: Want cheap clothes, then buy them from a thrift store or discount store like TJ Maxx. Want cheap books, borrow them from the library, or buy them used on the internet. Too often the answer is buy used, or buy at a warehouse club.

I can't recommend this book unless you are a novice at saving money. You are better off saving your money and buying Clark's far superior book, "Get Clark Smart: The Ultimate Guide to Getting Rich in America", which despite its title is not a get rich quick book. That book has all sorts of useful and less known money saving ideas, and a lot of information on how to avoid getting ripped off.

          2 out of 5 stars not satisified.......2003-11-19

I have to agree with the other reviewer. I listen to clark Howard as often as I can so I was very disappointed by this book. If you listen to the show and consider yourself relatively frugal anyways, you probably will not learn anything from this book. A lot of it seems like common sense to me.

5 out of 5 stars Very Very good Info!.......2003-06-18

I like Clarks show. This book is great. I didn't really think it was a good idea to take your bottled wine to a fancy restaurant to save $ but the rest was really really good!

          Book Description

Alice in Genderland tells the story of Dr. Richard Novic, Harvard-educated psychiatrist and crossdresser. No memoir like it has ever been published. Most of the time, he is a man at the office or a husband and father at home. But one evening a week, she is a woman about town, shopping, dining, dancing, and involved with a man for over four years. And both wife and boyfriend know about each other.

Although he now leads a richly expressive life, Dr. Novic suffered since childhood with a secret, a desire he was in no way equipped to handle, but one that eventually burst through his denial, a few months before his wedding date. Just once, he felt, while he still could, he had to know what it felt like to be a woman.

Like Alice in Wonderland, his curiosity led him to fall headlong down a rabbit hole, through desperate straits, mind-opening surprises, heart-rending changes, and boundless love. By the time he was back on his feet, he was a different person, living a lifestyle he hadn't known existed. Anyone who has struggled to figure out who they are and how they want to live will see themselves in this powerful life story.

          Praise for Alice in Genderland

"Few know the transgender scene like GIRL TALK magazine's Alice Novic. This exciting new memoir by her male alter ego takes us along with him and the people he loves, as he encounters and explores each twist and turn around him and within him. As much Lewis and Clark as it is Lewis Carroll, Alice in Genderland blazes a new trail in the world of crossdressing."

--Linda Jensen, contributing writer, Transgender Forum

"Alice bravely explores the limits of gender, sexuality, and relationships--a sexy, poignant, and at times hilarious memoir of transgenderism."

--Vernon A. Rosario, M.D., author of The Erotic Imagination, clinical faculty, UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute

"Alice in Genderland is a fascinating story, well worth reading."

--Vern L. Bullough, Ph.D., author of Crossdressing, Sex, and Gender, past president of the Society of the Scientific Study of Sex

          5 out of 5 stars Alice's diary.......2007-09-28

To me, this book almost reads like a diary. You get the chance to look into some ones life from grade school to adulthood and a professional career.
Dr. Novic tells a story that is entertaining and insightful in a way that can only be told by some one who has been there. Alice is surprisingly open and honest about her journey.
Unlike other transgender books I have read, I did not get the feeling of self loathing for the male persona. Perhaps in stead, a good deal of confusion that leads to self exploration, acceptance, and finally the balance of a complex dual gender mind.
Overall, this is a very positive book. Well written and easy to read. I really enjoyed "Alice in Genderland" and would recommend it to any one looking for a little insight into this subject.

          5 out of 5 stars Page-turning, spell-binding good fun.......2007-07-30

Alice Novic brings a lot of equipment to the genre - shrink insight, literary muscle and a great attitude. One of the warmest, clearest and compelling of TG memoirs. The highpoint here is Novic's two contrasting marriages, written with a novelist's acuity. Smart, proud and entertaining. And wow - great cover, too, babe!

5 out of 5 stars You'll Want to Read It More Than Once!.......2007-07-17

This book is compelling; I'm now re-reading for the fifth time! Though it doesn't skirt around the pathos that all of us transgendered women endure, it's also suspenseful, sexy, and hilarious. In some ways, Alice seems right between being a crossdresser and a transsexual and can be an inspiration to both. And I must say that it's great to have a psychiatrist in our community who so ably debunks any notion of us being sick or victims of a bad childhood.

          5 out of 5 stars A good read!.......2007-06-27

For those with an open mind and a compassionate heart, you will find this book a definitely good read. Both insightful and informative, this memoir is credible and refreshingly real. Dr. Novic leads the way for CDs everywhere and offers a sense of hope and clarity for a group of people who are often misunderstood. To those on the periphery of the CD world, the book offers a pure perspective from the CDs point of view. Thank you Dr. Novic for such an amazing novel.

4 out of 5 stars Alice in Genderland: A Crossdresser Comes of Age.......2007-06-17

This is definitely a niche market book. If you are interested or even just curious about transgender topics and in particular crossdressing then this is a valuable book that offers an uncensored view into the thoughts and actions of a crossdresser going from realization to fulfillment. What is surprising is that this is a monologue of an actual person and active crossdresser and describes the inner conflicts and how they are dealt with and resolved.

Overall, I found this book easy to read and interesting.

CAUTION! This is not a book for pruds as some situations and language are very graphic and sexual in nature.

              Book Description

Between the first Jacobite rising in 1689 and the final collapse in 1746, the hopes of the House of Stuart were centred mainly on Scotland. It would be quite wrong, however, to regard the Jacobite rebellions as a contest between England and Scotland. In the 17th and 18th centuries the Lowland Scots shared many of the feelings of the English, and had cause to hate and fear their countrymen in the Highlands. Thus it was the Highland clans that the Jacobites looked to for their most reliable manpower. Michael Barthorpe tells the fascinating story of the Jaconite rebellions, detailing the organisation and uniforms of both sides.

              Book Description

Chewing Sand’s contributions about insurgency and counterinsurgency operations take readers through a pedagogical process for understanding these two distinct forms of irregular warfare. Designed as the key text to a semester long counterinsurgency operations course at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the book gives readers a fundamental command of key concepts critical to winning in these wars. First, this book develops a fundamental understanding of insurgencies from the strategic, tactical, and systemic viewpoints, including the origins of insurrection; strategic types and strengths; tactical prescriptions of historical insurgents; and insurgent systems. Readers then explore counterinsurgency operations from strategic, operational, and tactical viewpoints as they examine types of counterinsurgent strategies and operational prescriptions, gaining pragmatic tools ready for application. Chewing Sand blends academic and operational insights by using writings from successful insurgents and counterinsurgents to reinforce scholarly theories. Finally, this book presents two successful case studies and one failed case study, inviting reader analysis and practical application of concepts introduced earlier in the book. Nosorog designed this book specifically for military scientists who are trying to grasp this unique form of warfare, not just as it applies to contemporary conflicts but also as it applies to all forms counterinsurgency that the U.S. military should anticipate for years to come.”

              5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book - a must read!.......2006-03-30

I had the great fortune of attending a special 10-day seminar on Insurgency and Counterinsurgency Operations conducted by the author, and I must say it was a truly exceptional opportunity to delve into a complex subject that has such significant relevance in today's world.

This book served as the foundation for study and provides a breadth of knowledge covering the gamut from historical perspectives of insurgency and counterinsurgency, to theories of revolution, to insurgent strategies, to counterinsurgency theories and strategies, as well as a number of case studies providing an analytical look into historical background of insurgencies and counterinsurgencies.

This book provides the fundamentals that are relevant and critical to any and every person interested in better understanding insurgencies and counterinsurgencies. A must read for military and civilian leaders alike as well as anyone simply interested in better understanding the complex world we live in today.

                5 out of 5 stars Warmth.......2006-11-04

I became aware of this book through an article Hemingway wrote about books he would like to read twice. Well I can say that this book is best read in the winter, for it will melt the snow in puddles around your shoe, and warm your heart and soul at the same time. So make haste and buy it now, while the cold winds still blow.

                5 out of 5 stars A Naturalist's Childhood on the Pampas.......2006-08-16

As we continue to pave over the beauties of our world and turn them into concrete wastelands, it is good to think back what life was like 150 years ago before we began the process of destruction in earnest.

                W. H. Hudson, the naturalist, is revered in Argentina, where they refer to him as Guillermo Enrique Hudson and name streets and towns after him. In simple and stately prose, he writes about his boyhood as one of several sons in an English family that ran an estancia on the Pampas. Despite several failed attempts to school him, he managed to pick up one of the best educations available: by using his eyes and ears to study nature. His skill in language, which is considerable, came from reading his father's books on his own.

Whether writing about ombu trees, plovers, snakes, lightning storms, rheas (Argentinian ostriches), or his neighboring ranchers, Hudson brought a whole world to life with this book.

Hudson published FAR AWAY AND LONG AGO in 1917 while he was living in England -- around the same time that a Frenchman named Marcel Proust was following where that elusive taste of madeleines led him in REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST, and around the same time that World War I was destroying a whole way of life. As he writes in the book:

"It is difficult, impossible I am told, for any one to recall his boyhood exactly as it was. It could not have been what it seems to the adult mind, since we cannot escape from what we are, however great our detachment may be; and in going back we must take our present selves with us: the mind has taken a different colour, and this is thrown back upon our past. The poet has reversed the order of things when he tells us that we come trailing clouds of glory, which melt away and are lost as we proceed on our journey. The truth is that unless we belong to the order of those who crystallize or lose their souls on their passage, the clouds gather about us as we proceed, and as cloud-compellers we travel on to the very end."

FAR AWAY AND LONG AGO is perhaps one of the greatest autobiographies ever written. Although I finished reading it several days ago, I am still feeling its afterglow and get this itch to re-read passages from it. This is, indeed, a book that will withstand several readings.

5 out of 5 stars Recreates the history, culture and geography of Argentina in a way few travel books accomplish.......2006-06-26

The Argentine pampas was a land of freedom and excitement: one literary figurehead W.H. Hudson describes in his memoir FAR AWAY & LONG AGO: A CHILDHOOD IN ARGENTINA. Descriptions of natural history and wildlife abound - and also of politics and interpersonal relationships of the times. You'd think FAR AWAY & LONG AGO would give insights into Hudson's childhood and life - and it does - but more importantly it recreates the history, culture and geography of Argentina in a way few travel books accomplish.

5 out of 5 stars A masterful memoir of growing up.......2005-06-26

I could never make it through Hudson's fantasy __Green Mansions__, but __Far Away and Long Ago__ is another book altogether. Written when Hudson was approaching eighty, more than forty years after he had left Argentina for good, it's filled with the kind of longing you might expect. And even though he's a witness to the mid-nineteenth civil wars in Argentina or, more incredibly still, listens to travelers reciting poems by the eighteenth-century Spaniard Menéndez Valdés, Hudson seems modern; he makes other times, other places, far away and long ago, as he calls them, seem incredibly near.

Hudson's excellent short story "El Ombú" is also well worth seeking out. And, finally, while it's true Hudson left Argentina for England, the US also has some claim to him; it was from New England, after all, that, shortly before his birth, his American family left for Argentina. Just thought I'd make that clear, since people are always calling him "Anglo-Argentine".
