Beautiful Photos.......2006-03-02
I really like the photography in this book. I also like the size - not too small but not too large. The one drawback is the space for each day is split into a.m. and p.m. I would prefer that there was just a blank space for each day. But, there is ample space for each day.
Gorgeous photos, an inspiration to any photographer.......2006-01-04
If you want inspiration, one way to do it is to give yourself some gorgeous Ansel Adams photos to absorb as you go about your daily appointments. You can't do better than this calendar from the late master of light and the Zone System.

A little bit of everything..........2002-05-30
I REALLY love this book, but I have to admit, this is definatly for older kids. There is profanity when something bad happens, and some nudity. If you LOVE LOVE LOVE the series and adore comics, buy this. You'll love it!
Mahou Shoujo Puritei Sami-.......2001-10-27
It starts as a Tenchi Muyo! story, a couple of tough ones and for a little diversion Hitoshi Okuda trys his hand at Pretty Samy. It's a good little story with a seemingly impossible ending. But that is what Magical Girl stories are all about.
How would you like it if your little sister had magic?
This manga was published in Japan around the 1st of Sept.1995.Around the time of the last episodes of the Tenchi Muyo! OVA 2,Tenchi Muyo! TV (Tenchi Universe) and the time when they were making the Pretty Sammy OVA and thinking about the TV series.(Here in the US, Pioneer named it Magical Project S.)
The first story is about SASAMI saving a wolf, then it gets interesting.(Kind of reminds me of the new story by CLAMP Shirahime-Shyo.) The next story is about an old love of Tenchi's and the power of Tsunami among other things. (Her name translates into "famous harbor of enchantment, more or less. The tidal-wave Tsunami has diferent Kanji.)
By the time you get done with the first two stories you need something lighter.
This is a pretty (no pun) good book. I have both versions (US & Japan) VIZ did an ok job of flipping and translating the manga. Some time they can do a really (...) job. Ranma 1/2 #1, it looks terrible.)THis time it worked.
Buy IT!!!!
i loved it.......2001-03-11
this is great i love it i love it i love it
this has tons of great stories ending with the parody pretty sammy. i realy like it the first story is with sasami who saves a hurt wolf and then he saves here this si so great.
then my favorite. (the pretty sammy story is last)this second one is about a tenchi's 6 year old girl friend who moved away. this story puts the girls and especaly tenchi in a realy realy akward position. then washu finally figures out who she realy is and the mysterious girl tells washu her story (she was getting dinner and got hit by a car and is barley alive)and finds out that she is borrowing a angels body and is barley alive. so washu goes and tries to save her but ends up just buying her some time. then washu knocks ryoko and aeka out and hookos them up to a dream machine and tests how much they care about and love tenchi (ryoko gets t at least 20 times worst) and overal i think it is great
No need For Tenchi Magical Girl Pretty Sammy/I liked it!.......2000-08-25
For those of you who don't know who Tenchi is,You should start getting the scoop! This book may not be the first one, but it starts off a great three tales told on Earth. One of a poor wolf, another of a young love, and last the Magical Girl Pretty Sammy! Fans of Sasami will want to read this book, for it's practiclly all of that little Jurien Princess.I think it's a good book for drawing off of as well to freashin up on those "drawing Tenchi" skills! Anyway, I enjoyed it and for anyone who likes Tenchi, I think they will too!
Magical Girl Pretty Sammy--Wonderful Book Great Characters.......2000-05-09
In No Need For Tenchi #3, (Magical Girl Pretty Sammy aka MGPS) Tenchi and friends continue to offer great stories, with lots of humor and continued character development. If you like the other tenchi books, or just Sasami, you will LOVE this one. The experiences in MGPS range from meeting a ghost to Sasami's school play, and so much more. If you want to learn more about the plot, i suggest buying it--I don't want to give too much away! I have always known Tenchi to have great, funny, and touching stories that never let you get bored. Worth reading many times, Magical Girl Pretty Sammy would probably be my favorite No Need For Tenchi book. I reccomend this to readers of any age. Buy it now! IT's a must read!
Book Description
This surprisingly reverent collection of religious humor pokes less at the message than at the messenger. Gentle enough to give your preacher, clean enough to use in the pulpit, this volume is nonetheless sharp enough to drive home its point that the clergyman does well to serve rather than be served.

A good compendium, but not an essential one..........2000-05-04
The Planescape Monstrous Compendium Appendix II, is an interesting addition to the collection of any DM interested to run adventures on the outer planes. However this book will only be of minor interest to anybody else. The artwork in the book, done by DiTerlizzi, is pretty good, altough I prefer the job he did on the first compendium. A lot of the monsters included in this book had not been featured in any other supplement before. Exemples of what you will be getting for your monney are: a new race usable for the PC'S (Aasimar), 3 new angelic species (Eladrin, Lupinal, Guardinal), and a new tanari ( Maurezhi). To sum it up the book is interesting, but considering the high cost of these Planescape's Compendiums you should only buy it if you intend to run most of your campaign on the outer planes.
Finally - original monsters!.......2000-01-09
While this is easily the least useful volume of the Planescape Appendices ( one containing the Baatezu and the Tanar'ri, three focusing on the Elementals), Number Two readily catches my eye with the fact that most of the creatures within have never apeared in print before, and the few that have haven't been heard from in many years (on the other hand, numbers one and three usually simply take a random, and probably well-known creature from one of the older supplements, change its stats and name, and - voila! - a "new" monster!). I find this volume to be a most enjoyable resource of absurd creatures I use to knock the ground from under my PCs' feet.
Adds whole new dimensions to the monsters of Planescape........1998-12-16
The new Sects contained in this suppliment are invaluable when you are in a clinch to make a new encounter. The monsters are a little more balanced than the ones in the other expansions and include some pretty freaky concepts.
Great artwork and descriptions!!!.......1998-09-15
Although I found the artwork excellent, and I really enjoyed the descriptions; I found the lack of timestream entries somewhat disconcerting.
Customer Reviews:
Not too good..........2000-05-14
I think that this volume has lost focus. The monsters seem completely uninspired (come on - a brain in a jar! ) and most hark from other, better sources. The black-and-white art seems to be low-grade and threatens to rub off on contact (on further examination the suspicion proved true). The saddest part is that all creatures are accompanied with background stories a la Rogues Gallery, but infinitely poorer, barely even scraping the surface of Ravenloft's nature. It really hurts to see this sort of thing from TSR.

Never Underestimate Star Quality.......2007-09-24
Scott O'Brien did a lot of homework to present us with a highly readable review of a woman who lived well, made a lot of movies, treated her fellow human beings and her animals with respect, and is, thanks to TCM and two recent biographies, having a much-deserved revival. Some of us have been watching Kay's movies for a long time and have our favorites--there are classics like One Way Passage or Trouble In Paradise, but there is vintage wine, too, sweet sleepers like Mandalay or House on 56th Street or Confession--well-made soaps that are living fashion shows, magic with the designs of fashion master Orry-Kelly. (My nephew and I used to like to watch Kay's films and count the number of costume changes in a short 65 to 75 minute film!) O'Brien's book takes a conventional chronological approach to Kay's career, and has the advantage of notations from her succinct, no-nonsense diary, which often backs up or comments on her more public utterances, and certainly offers fascinating commentary on her numerous relationships. What I admire about O'Brien's book is his matter-of-fact approach, mainly avoiding sensationalism or salaciousness, and including details on almost every film, including contemporary as well as period criticism of her films. The big drawback to this first edition is mainly the cheap paper utilized for photographs--Kay, like Garbo and Dietrich, loved the camera and a selection of stills in the center would have been nice; there was also perhaps too much reliance on opinions from old friend Jetti Aimes, but her enthusiasm for Kay's honesty is understandable. Perhaps the success of this and other books will hasten the availability of more of her films on DVD--how about it, TCM?
Kay Deserved Better.......2007-05-08
The fact that this biography received so many positive reviews leads me to suspect that the author recruited family and friends to help the book sell.
O'Brien calls Francis' diary "particularly revealing" and quotes it often, but the extracts are not particularly illuminating. Most of them are brief and tell the reader little -- so-and-so was a good lover, Hedda Hopper was a b****, Francis drank too much the night before. Context is minimal at best. Francis was Warner Brothers' answer to Katherine Hepburn at RKO, Norma Shearer at MGM, Claudette Colbert at Paramount. A bit of comparison, analysis, something would have been nice, but the author seems only dimly aware of Francis' competition. Another opportunity wasted is the section on Confession, the U.S. remake of Pola Negri's Mazurka. Director Joe May made a shot-by-shot copy of the German original, which he screened for the American cast. It would be interesting to know what influence Negri's performance might have had on Francis' interpretation of the role. O'Brien would rather tell us the nickname Francis gave her wigs.
O'Brien's writing is pedestrian at best. At worst, he indulges in everything my high-school English teacher warned us against: misspelled words; overuse of alliteration, exclamation points, and italics; cliches and mixed metaphors; etc. The attempts at wit and sophistication leave one feeling embarassed for Mr. O'Brien, as do the frequent malapropisms.
As noted by another reviewer, this book seems like an amateurish effort on the parts of all concerned.
An Incredible Job of Research and Writing.......2007-03-20
Scott O'Brien has pulled off an amazing feat. Kay Francis lived a vigorous and, for the time, unconventional life that could easily be turned into the sleazy tabloid fare all too common (and popular)today. Yet O'Brien has managed to present a vivid, highly readable, and scrupulously researched account without a single trace of nudge-nudge-wink-wink salaciousness or its nearly as unpleasant opposite, sychophantic can-do-no-wrong fan worship. I confess I had started reading with the plan to hop-skip to films I know and love, but I found myself engrossed on every page. I have long been a great fan of Miss Francis's films, but I now appreciate her work far more. (The ONLY small flaw with the book is the typos noted by other reviewers, but this could easily be fixed in a subsequent edition.) The writing is bright and lively. The pictures are great. The author's ability to present a complex and fascinating personality in the context of her times is superb.
Kay Francis: Famed Star of the Golden Era is worthy of appreciation by film buffs.......2006-11-06
Scott O'Brien has written a fine biography of Kay Francis (1903-1968). Francis was born in Oklahoma to an actress mother and a father who abandoned the family. She started in the theatre moving to Hollywood and early talkies. At one time she was the best paid actress in Hollywood.
O'Brien's book examines all of Kay's films. Many of them are very forgettable but she did star in such worthy films as "Trouble in Paradise"
and "The White Angel" telling the story of Crimean War nurse Florence Nightingale. This will bore some readers but others will be fascinated by the insights into these films.
I am very ambivalent about Francis. She had countless affairs, numerous abortions, was near alcoholic and probably had lesbian affairs. She was a jazz age babe. Francis also had a volatile temper. She enjoyed sex in all its forms. This was her privilege and is not to be seen as a slam by this reviewer on her lifestyle. However, many of the matrons who attended her weepy vehicles woud have been appalled at her wild behavior!
Francis is to be commended for her World War II work with servicemen;
her kindness to cast and crew with whom she worked and her love of animals .
Kay Francis was one of the best dressed women in America. She was tall, dark and had a seductive voice despite a speech impediment. She was the queen of the Warner's lot until being replaced by Bette Davis.
The book will appeal to classic movie fans. It is introduced by Robert Osborne the congenial host of Turner Classic Movies.
Francis has got her wish. She is bascially forgotten by the American public. She does deserve to have a revival of her films.
The book is well illustrated with pictures of Kay and her cronies.
Speak, Memory.......2006-08-02
Scott O'Brien--you magnificent, astonishing fool you! Imagine spending so many years of your life researching the life of a forgotten screen actress from the 1930s, a woman who is barely remembered nowadays! Why fling your undoubted energies after such a quixotic goal? If you must write about old Hollywood, why not write about someone people have heard of, like Joan Crawford, Garbo, Clark Gable? If you want to go obscure, how about Norma Shearer? But for goodness sake, Kay Francis!?! Scott O'Brien, you have labored in the vineyards where angels fear to tread!
As it turns out, I CAN'T WAIT TO BE FORGOTTEN is starlore of a very high order, and if you want an engrossing examination of a great Hollywood personality, this is the book for you. Kay Francis may be little remembered today, but all that is about to change as succeeding generations pick up on the glory that is her screen presence. Born in Oklahoma City ("by mistake," she bitterly commented) in 1905, Francis dabbled in high society and became the social secretary to rich dowagers while pining for Broadway stardom in New York. Her own madcap ways were fueled by the great rush to sexual and economic freedom pursued by many women in the wake of World War I, in which they had been asked for so many sacrifices without even having the right to vote. Scott O'Brien is a sensitive cultural historian and writes with perception about this, the so-called "flapper era," showing us that Kay Francis' fabled and open sexuality was part and parcel of the times in which she grew up.
After an interesting apprenticeship at Paramount Studios, Francis signed a long-term contract with Warner Brothers, and for a time in the early 1930s she became the queen of the lot, eventually rising in salary and status to the absolute heights of success. She was the highest paid actor of them all, and therein lay her tragedy, for Jack Warner turned against her and forced her against her will to play out her contract in increasingly shabby B movies. Late in life, she and her Warner Bros rival, Bette Davis, sat down and let down their hair about their disputes with Warners. Why did you keep making those B movies, Bette asked Kay. Because she was in it for the money, Kay replied. Bette said she walked away, because she was in it for the career.
Kay became a victim of public scrutiny for her shabby studio treatment was the talk of the nation. Eventually she left Warners, and the films she made afterwards, for other studios, are indeed, as O'Brien points out, among the best and most rewarding of her career, culminating in the "Monogram Trilogy" (DIVORCE, ALLOTMENT WIVES, WIFE WANTED) which sound like horrors but instead crackle with noir energy and a gritty raw realism miles removed from the somewhat grand products (like THE WHITE ANGEL, a biopic of Florence Nightingale) of Warners' A list.
Despite love affairs with Fritz Lang, Otto Preminger, and even gay stars like Nils Asther, Kay's great love seems to have been a German nobleman who broke off their engagement, as the Second World War loomed, to go back and fight for Hitler. Although she never knew it, he killed himself shortly after Pearl Harbor, far away in Nazi Germany. It was like a scene from one of her great romantic movies, but twisted somehow, bizarre and bewildering.
It turns out that she wasn't even a lesbian, not really, though she had some passionate interludes with a woman here and there. That she was a lesbian O'Brien traces back to a canard propagated by Phil Silvers, her co-star in FOUR JILLS AND A JEEP.
When Kay Francis said, "I can't wait to be forgotten," could she have somehow known that indeed the halls of memory would have been so thoroughly scrubbed clean? No matter now, for thanks to the incredible, noble efforts of author Scott O'Brien, and the hard work of the folks at Bear Manor Media, O'Brien's publisher, a new star has risen, and her name is Kay Francis. You can't keep genius down, even if it speaks with a lisp that turns all one's "r"s to "w"s.
Book Description
The shockingly revelatory story of the FBI's 12–year, pre–9/11 battle against terrorism, as told through the stories of three people on the frontlines" the world's most dangerous terrorist, and two Americans who fought against him from the beginning.
As 9/11 unfolded three strangers watched the events – and were not surprised. For years these three had been bound on a collision course: FBI agent Nancy Floyd, FDNY Fire Marshal Ronnie Bucca, and Ramzi Yousef, a bomb–making terrorist. Floyd, Bucca, and Yusef were soldiers on opposite sides of a more covert terrorist war – one that has been fought for the past 12 years.
In 1000 Years for Revenge – a work of groundbreaking investigation that reads like an international thriller – five–time Emmy–winning investigative reporter Peter Lance reveals the details of the 12–year search for Osama bin Laden's New York City terrorist cell, by an FBI plagued by infighting, misinformation and negligence. Based on astounding evidence, only recently uncovered, this book holds revelations that promise to attract headlines, including exclusive evidence of an Al Qaeda mole in a highly sensitive government position in New York City.

Award-winning journalist Peter Lance explains how an elusive al Qaeda mastermind defeated the entire American security system in what the author calls "the greatest failure of intelligence since the Trojan Horse." Threading the stories of FBI agent Nancy Floyd, FDNY fire marshal Ronnie Bucca, and bomb-maker Ramzi Yousef, Lance uncovers the years of behind-the-scenes intrigue that put these three strangers on a collision course. An unparalleled work of investigative reporting and masterful storytelling,

The more things change............2007-04-27
This book confirms that no matter the organization--private business, non-profit, or government--what rises to the top is way too often not the cream of the crop, but those who can play politics, manipulate situations, and befriend more powerful superiors.
The people involved that allowed this to happen should all be charged with negligence. Of course that will not happen. As much as I would LOVE to lay all the blame on the Clinton years, it is likely that he was not aware of what was going on because there are just too many layers of (mis)management involved for any useful information to rise to the top. Poor judgement after poor judgement is laid bare in this well researched book.
And, to say that the Bush administration is at fault would be equally wrong. They were faced with the wrong information that had been cultivated for years by those who were supposed to be protecting us.
One oversight in the book is where we could quite possibly place the true blame--Congress! Only a few of us ancient readers (nearly 60) may recall that the LIBERAL CONGRESS made it illegal after Watergate for the FBI and the CIA to share information. It was ILLEGAL for the CIA to pursue any leads that they might find overseas in the US.
The irony that the liberal Democrat-controlled Congress of the '60's and '70's, which passed ever more intrusive legislation for citizens, made it impossible for our intelligence community (oxymoron??) to find the truth is palpable.
Of course after 9/11 those same self-rightous liberals were incensed that the Bush presidency "let" this happen. One can only wish that they eventually look in the mirror and recognize where the blame belongs--but I won't hold my breath waiting.
Incrediable research.......2007-03-07
This book was well researched, and very well written. After reading this book you will never trust the F.B.I. with our safety ever again. The absolute incompentance of that Federal office is mind boggling. So many chances where had to stop the 1st bombing of the trade center, and the ultimate, 9-11-01. To many critical
intel was ignored, and so many lives paid for inter agency infighting, along with the Clinton administration of stonewalling the FBI CIA, from sharing intel on terrorist and so many other national security issues. Lets hope the Feds can get their act together in time to stop the next attack on our country. God Bless the USA.
How could it be Bush's fault?.......2007-01-15
But I'm not defending him (Bush) at all because he was too busy reading a book about a goat to a bunch of schoolkids in his brothers state of Florida for his failed 'No Child Left Behind Act' - He (Bush) was in Texas as Governor signing the death certs for death row inmates like Karla Faye Tucker (and 168 others) and mocking her for 'pleading for her life' while most of this was going on.
Clinton was in office then for 8 years doing deals like Whitewater.
Good Read.......2006-03-09
Very informative and well written. The book gives insight into what was going on in the FBI prior to the first Towwer bombing.
Wortht time to read.
Read THIS.......2005-11-23
One of the best non fiction books I have ever read. If 9/11 leaves some questions in your mind and the government is not giving the whole story, Peter Lance gives all the fact with 50 pages of footnotes. The book is great reading, I couldn't put it down. Peter Lance does a superb job of connecting the dots leading to 9/11.
Product Description
For most Americans the true origin of the 9/11 attacks remains a mystery. But as the two jetliners hit the Twin Towers, three strangers knew exactly what had happened. FBI agent Nancy Floyd, FDNY fire marshal Ronnie Bucca, and Ramzi Yousef, the bomb-making terrorist an American judge once called "an apostle of evil," had been on a collision course for yearssoldiers on opposing sides of a terror war raging since the late 1980s.
Now, in 1000 Years for Revenge -- a groundbreaking investigative work that reads like an international thriller -- award-winning journalist Peter Lance reveals how the FBI missed dozens of opportunities to stop the attacks of September 11, dating back to 1989. Drawing on interviews with scores of central figures in the story, as well as hundreds of pages of declassified documents, Lance uncovers startling evidence of FBI negligence that even a joint congressional committee missed. Among his revelations:
From the early 1990s, Osama bin Laden was running an active al Qaeda terror cell in New York City -- with blind sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman as its leader and Ramzi Yousef as its master bomb maker.
The FBI had sufficient intelligence to capture Yousef before he built the first World Trade Center bomb in 1993. In 1995, they learned that he had already set the 9/11 suicide-hijacking plot in motion from Manila -- that he was planning "to return to the U.S. to attack the World Trade Center a second time." Yet each time the FBI missed the opportunity to stop him.
FBI agent Nancy Floyd used a key informant to penetrate the cell of Sheikh Rahman -- only to have the operation sandbagged by her FBI supervisor.
Most alarming, in 1992, a confidant of Sheikh Rahman removed the plans for the World Trade Center from FDNY headquarters. Ronnie Bucca brought the information to the FBI in 1999 but he was ignored.

Really good review of scientific studies on health benefits.......1999-07-23
This book is very thorough. This is the first source I see which reviews the many western scientific studies which have verified the health claims of this ancient drink. This is also the only place where I have found a quantified indicator (Ph) of the state of readyness of the drink, and a recommended dosage. Other good sections include how to prepare the drink, a troubleshooting guide, health problems which can be treated with kombucha and what other treatment may be helpful, and recipes using kombucha. This book packs a lot of information and is definitely worth keeping as a reference.
