5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for Victoria fans.......2007-05-17

This is an excellent resource as well as enjoyable reading and viewing. Queen Victoria had a large, illustrious family. This book not only humanizes and personalizes the many family members, it also helps to make sense of the extended family connections - particularly with the included family trees in the back of the book.

I have perused through this book many times, and have recently given one to a friend, who absolutely loved it. This is not a history book that will just sit on a shelf. It is a required addition to anyone interested in the history of Queen Victoria and the Eurpoean monarchies.

    5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2004-03-18

Absolutely remarkable. Charlotte Zeepvat takes the reader into the lives of Queen Victoria and her family with the amazing photographs, both candid and formal. The pictures are rare. They are well organized and have excellent captions. Zeepvat is a great writer/historian and I recommend her books to all.

    5 out of 5 stars What a photo collection!.......2003-12-13

There are certain photos that I simply expect to see when perusing volumes about European royalty. However, upon receiving Zeepvat's book, I was thrilled to find so many rarely seen photos of some of the more obscure descendants of the "Grandmother of Europe." If you're a royalty buff like I am, you can spend hours immersed in this marvelous book and its detailed family trees.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2002-10-01

for those interested in royalty. While some of these photos can be found in many different books, some of them I've seen for the first time. Queen Victoria's decendants are so numerous and belong to so many different royal houses. Definitely a worthwhile purchase!

4 out of 5 stars Great photos, some factual errors in text.......2002-09-08

Many interesting photos and trivia about Victoria's large extended family-there's good reason she referred to it as "the mob".Slightly marred by sloppy editing and stilted translations;overall enjoyable and worthwhile.

Man I love the mid to late 1980's version of Garfield cause the pictures have gotten better and they came up with more funny stuff like Garfield waking Jon up in the middle of the night.
It is also my understanding that Garfield books will someday become collector's items and unfortunately, I lost one of my Garfield books and hopefully I'll be able to find it or replace it.

Since 1958, the Brave New Workshop (BNW) comedy theater has written and performed more than 250 scripted sketch-comedy shows. This book gives the reader an inside look at the process and philosophies that have been used to create some of the most innovative sketch comedy in America. Its contents can be used to immediately improve your skills as a writer, performer, or director. Revealing the Brave New Workshop's eight core philosophies of improvisation, along with the detailed process of idea generation, scripting, rehearsal, and performance, this text provides "everything you need to know" for both the individual learner and the classroom instructor.

More than 46 years ago, an ex-circus performer named Dudley Riggs founded the Brave New Workshop. Alumni include writer/activist Al Franken, MADtv's Mo Collins, Reba's Melissa Peterman, The Naked Gun writer Pat Proft, Analyze This writer Peter Tolan, and That 70s Show executive producer Linda Wallem. Brave New Workshop alumni have contributed to hundreds of movies and television shows, including Saturday Night Live, Scary Movie 3, Airplane!, The Gary Shandling Show, M*A*S*H, and Happy Days. This handbook shares the creative comedy process that has helped to create some of the most prolific and successful talent in stages across the globe and in Hollywood.

Also included with the book is a CD-ROM that contains sample scripts, live performances, and worksheets to aid the reader. Featuring an online instructor's guide, The Art of the Laugh is ideal for classroom instruction, individual work, and ensemble-based creations.

            Book Description

The most visible cultural institution on earth between the World Wars, the Hollywood movie industry tried to satisfy world-wide audiences of vastly different cultural, religious, and political persuasions. The World According to Hollywood shows how the industrys self-regulation shaped the content of films to make them salable in as many markets as possible. In the process, Hollywood created an idiosyncratic vision of the world that was glamorous and exotic, but also oddly narrow. Ruth Vasey shows how the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), by implementing such strategies as the industrys Production Code, ensured that domestic and foreign distribution took place with a minimum of censorship or consumer resistance. Drawing upon MPPDA archives, studio records, trade papers, and the records of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Vasey reveals the ways the MPPDA influenced the representation of sex, violence, religion, foreign and domestic politics, corporate capitalism, ethnic minorities, and the conduct of professional classes. Vasey is the first scholar to document fully how the demands of the global market frequently dictated film content and created the movies homogenized picture of social and racial characteristics, in both urban America and the world beyond. She uncovers telling evidence of scripts and treatments that were abandoned before or during the course of production because of content that might offend foreign markets. Among the fascinating points she discusses is Hollywoods frequent use of imaginary countries as story locales, resulting from a deliberate business policy of avoiding realistic depictions of actual countries. She argues that foreign governments perceived movies not just as articles of trade, but as potential commercial and political emissaries of the United States. Just as Hollywood had to persuade its domestic audiences that its products were morally sound, its domination of world markets depended on its ability to create a culturally and politically acceptable product.

The World According to Hollywood will be a useful and important work, appealing to scholars interested in questions of national cinema and national identity, as well as the history of censorship and the MPPDA.Lea Jacobs, author of The Wages of Sin: Censorship and the Fallen Woman Film, 19281942

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Why were so many "imaginary countries" used as locales?.......1997-06-03

In this insightful survey of Hollywood films between the World Wars, the author shows that the increasing proportion of revenue from foreign markets dictated not only greater attention to their political, social, and religious sensitivities, but also influenced the very form of the medium, e.g., a tendency toward "action pictures" at the expense of "dialogue pictures",
Admirably researched asnd clearly written, Vasey's work will be essential for film students and others interested in Hollywood's impact on the world, and vice versa.

                5 out of 5 stars Good book!.......2007-07-28

This was the text in a grad level class I took, and I'm glad the prof chose it! This is a great read for anyone that wants to learn how negotiation affects all aspects of your life as well as for those who want to improve their negotiating skills!

4 out of 5 stars Great content, very dry.......2006-11-03

The book has many excellent points, but is written in a manner that will bore you. Several of us in class have three books to read, and this one is the least interesting. I still would recommend it as a good textbook, but only if used as an additional resource to "Getting to Yes" and "You can negotiate anything". Between the three you'll stay interested and the overlap will reinforce.

3 out of 5 stars Used in MBA program - not that useful.......2006-04-06

We used this book in our negotiations class and actually found Getting to Yes to be more useful. This is one of those textbooks that I have written about in other classes that has a lot of common sense in it but it actually makes thinking about negotiation harder than it really is. The book could easily have been shrunk from 430 pages to about 150 pages. The book actually presents too many things to think about in a negotiation that you end up becoming confused about which strategy to use or how to play defense. Of course, like any book some people might like it but I know myself and other classmates did not find it that helpful.

Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, was one of the titans of 20th century American children's literature--a legacy that shows no sign of diminishing in the 21st. But such epochal fare as The Cat in the Hat and enduring, whimsical characters as Horton, The Grinch and Sam-I-Am represent but one corner of the late writer/artist's vast artistic universe. Other Geisel biographies have detailed his remarkable life and vibrant art, but Massachusetts dentist/Seussiana collector nonpareil Richard D. Cohen serves up a "visual biography" that's part lovingly illustrated coffee table book and part insightful analysis of a creative mind and the various historical and cultural forces that shaped it. Cohen richly illustrates his compelling tribute with key, telling artifacts from his own massive collection. No corner of the author/artist's life has escaped Cohen's obsessive collector's eye, including: turn-of the-century bottles of the Geisel family brewery, Geisel's teenage writings and illustrations, later work that spans careers in cartooning advertising (successful campaigns for Esso, Flit and others), wartime propaganda (including uncredited work on the Oscar-winning Hitler Lives!) and Hollywood (The 5000 Finger of Dr. T). Indeed, in Cohen's thoughtful, lavishly illustrated analysis, Geisel's latter-day incarnation as children's author supreme was but the logical distillation of a lifetime devoted to wit, wordplay and whimsical art. --Jerry McCulley

                    Book Description

Theodor Seuss Geisel, creator of Horton the Elephant, the Grinch, the Cat in the Hat, and a madcap menagerie of the best-loved children’s characters of all time, stands alone as the preeminent figure of children’s literature. But Geisel was a private man who was happier at the drawing table than he was across from any reporter or would-be biographer. Under the thoughtful scrutiny of Charles D. Cohen, Geisel’s lesser known works yield valuable insights into the imaginative and creative processes of one of the 20th century’s most original thinkers.

5 out of 5 stars Yes I Love It, Sam-I-Am!.......2004-05-29

As we celebrate the centennial of Ted Geisel's birth, material is appearing that looks at the influence of Dr. Seuss on generations of American readers. Dr. Cohen brings us what is obviously a labor of love. Drawing inspiration on his extensive collection of Seussiana, he has produced one of the most lavishly illustrated and broadly scoped book on the life and works of the good doctor.

Cohen reaches back to Geisel's school days and illustrates the development of the artist's style and humor. Continually he will point out how pieces done at various points in Geisel's life can be traced as part of the development of what would become some of his trademark images and beloved characters, including the Grinch. Instead of focusing heavily on Seuss's books, he draws attention to the vast collection of other artwork that was drawn, mostly before the books even came into being. Seuss's work as a humorist, advertising artist, sculptor, and cartoonist (political and otherwise) are shown here as he continued to improve and hone his craft. The end results are the books that are so beloved to multitudes of people who were lucky enough to grow up with Seuss in the house.

The book would be worth it for the pictures alone, but the accompanying text helps get below the surface of many of the pieces, and to tie them together into a artist's whole output. Even if you only look at the pictures and read the captions to the pictures, you will get a whole new appreciation of Dr. Seuss's work over the years. If I any complaint, it is that in some ways the books almost get shorted too much in this narrative, and too often the captions for the illustrations are repetitive to the text. But these are minor quibbles that in no way detract from the glorious whole.

For the Seuss lover, and for the casual reader, this book brings the reader a whole new appreciation of a beloved illustrator's work and the genius that was Dr. Seuss.

4 out of 5 stars The many facets of Dr. Seuss.......2004-05-17

Since 2004 is the Seussentennial, or the hundredth anniversary of Dr. Seuss' birth, this is a great time to get to know more about one of America's most popular icons of children's literature. Ted Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, was far more than an author and illustrator of children's books and movies. His career includes humorist, journalist, advertising genius, magazine and political cartoonist, creator of wartime training and propaganda films, president of a publishing company, and spokesman for children's education.

Author Charles Cohen, a dentist and avid collector of Seussiana, is well qualified to write this visual biography of Ted Geisel. Through lavish illustrations, many from his own collection, Cohen shows the many facets of Geisel's art and imagination. The reader is treated to Geisel's earliest works from long before his first published children's book. These include examples of his college newspaper cartoons and his many successful advertising campaigns that blended humor and salesmanship. These creations are juxtaposed with his later children's books to provide the reader a deeper understanding of how culture and history shaped the evolution of his ideas and whimsical bestiary, and to point out the same themes cropping up over and over again in his works.

Although this book provides a fascinating view into many unusual perspectives of Dr. Seuss the artist and innovator, there is little here about Ted Geisel the man. In the introduction, Cohen says that he neither met Geisel nor interviewed anyone who knew him. Instead he delved into Geisel's works to discover what made him tick. As a result, there are many facts missing about Geisel's personal life and friendships. The few personal facts that were thrown in, mostly towards the end of the book, came from out of nowhere and made me crave more details. It is for this reason, especially since this book is called a "visual biography," that I rated it four stars instead of five. It is more a visual exploration of Geisel's works than a biography. Nevertheless, I strongly recommend this book. It will open your eyes to a creatively obsessed man that you never realized existed. It will also rekindle your fond memories of the Dr. Seuss books you read as a child. Perhaps it will even shed a bit of light on why you loved those books so much.

                    4 out of 5 stars A Grown-up Biography of a Children's Hero.......2004-03-20

With the awful, distorted, contrived pile of wasted film, conjured up in the form of Mike Myers' take on the "Cat in the Hat," it would be nice to know why, in the beginning of it all, Dr. Seuss was ever popular at all. He was a great writer and cartoonist before his famous cat's striped hat became chic fashion among post-grunge era teenagers.

In "The Seuss, the Whole Seuss and Nothing But the Seuss: A Visual Biography of Theodor Seuss Geisel" by Charles Cohen, we are shown the greatness of Seuss -- of Theodor Geisel, through drawings, paintings and text. We get to learn about his early days at Dartmouth, as he toyed with hybridic animals, wit and satire.

Not every idea worked. Seuss, an experimenter, evolved from being a talented but rustic styler of odd creatures into a sophisticated artist of odd, if not bizarre beasts that had genuine identity.

Before he write and drew books about green eggs, grinches, and elephants named Horton, he was an editorial cartoonist. His language in many of the cartoons was far from being politically correct, but his social commentary decrying racism was right on. He hard-handed racist thought with no evidence of his sweet children's characters kindness.

Cohen has produced an array of research. Samples of Seuss' art grace most pages. We also get a look at the vast merchandising, parodies, and unlicensed knock-offs.

This is not a children's book. Don't be fooled by the name of the publisher. It is for someone interested in reading a serious look at the history of one of America's beloved cartoonists.

I fully recommend "The Seuss, the Whole Seuss and Nothing But the Seuss: A Visual Biography of Theodor Seuss Geisel." by Charles D. Cohen.

                    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2004-03-05

This book is not all about reiterating the Seuss stories we've already read, but instead an objective well researched pictoral and written account of the man so many love. Cohen does a great job researching the possible meanings of Geisel's cartoons and later texts. There are many, many Judge magazine and other political cartoons that are absolutely hilarious, and absolutely adult in nature (similar to alot of his "childrens" stories).

I highly recommend this book to anyone what likes to drop into a chapter then skip to another at an opposite end of the book because they are somewhat independent although chronological, it is easy to skip around to the parts you feel like reading for that day.

Also, at 400 pages full color, who can pass up the bargain?

Kudos to Dr. Cohen. The writing is insightful, the illustrations and pictures are outstanding, the sheer volume of content is overwhelming and of course, the dedication is tear-jerking. A must have for any Seuss fan. The Bush administration has broken international and domestic laws related to the development of chemical and biological warfare. The facts are presented succinctly in this book by one of the authors of the very international agreements that are being violated. The book also sheds light on the anthrax attacks against two of the leading Senators who might have impeded passage of the Patriot Act in the confusing aftermath of the 911 attacks.

In June of 1763, British troops, weary of the war with the Ottawa Indians, decided to meet with them on June 24 and give them a gift: blankets and a handkerchief taken from their hospital, which at the time housed patients stricken with smallpox. There was an outbreak of smallpox among the Indians around this time, but the author of this book reminds the reader, it is not clear whether it was because of the gift of blankets. Caution must govern the analysis of history he says, and this is especially true when detailing the historical record of bioterrorism. Hysteria and political hype surround the subject of biological warfare and bioterrorism, and so books that address the subject intelligently are sorely needed. In spite of its short length, this book is one of these. It's only minus might be the omission of the technical details behind bioweapons, but it makes up for this lack by its sound articulation of the issues.

So which groups or nations have engaged in bioterrorism in say the last hundred years? The author gives a fairly long list. Some examples are:

-Germany in World War I used, via its spies, biological agents (anthrax and glanders) to infect horses in the United States that were due to be shipped to the Allied governments. Germany conducted similar operations in Romania, Norway, and Argentina.

-Japan engaged in biowarfare from 1931 to 1945, mostly against China, using agents such as anthrax, glanders, typhoid, cholera, dysentery, and plague. The leader of the Japanese bioweapons projects was Ishii Shiro, who according to the author was pardoned by the United States government in exchange for his laboratory notebooks.

All of the major Allied powers aggressively conducted bioweapons research during and after World War II, and some of this research is discussed in the book. The United States government in particular was able to develop crystalline forms of bacterial toxin and had concentrated efforts to understand and control certain plant diseases. These research programs were finally shut by President Richard Nixon in 1969. Interestingly, and surprisingly, the author reports that some Seventh-Day Adventists were willing to submit themselves as test subjects during some of this research.

Readers will naturally be curious as to whether Iraq did indeed have a biological weapons program. The author reports that it did, beginning in 1985 with its war with Iran, and concentrating its efforts on anthrax and botulinum toxin. He concludes that Iraq, under Saddam Hussein, entered the war in 1991 with usable biological weapons.

But it was the Soviet Union that had the largest and most deadly bioweapons program of all the countries actively involved in this type of research. The author gives a detailed overview of this huge research effort, some of it apparently using techniques from genetic engineering, such as combining two different viruses into a chimera virus. The creation of chimera viruses is a very common technique in viral genetic engineering, and certainly will be, and should be, continued in the future. The Soviet effort is alarming, but its accomplishments in genetic engineering need to be repeated in order to find out just what is possible in the creation of bioweapons.

The author also addresses what the future holds for bioweapons development, various hypothetical attack scenarios, and what can be done to counter them. Several experts in biotechnology have remarked on the relative ease with which future weapons can be developed. But if this is true, effective countermeasures can just as easily be developed. For every genetically engineered deadly virus created in a laboratory there can be one created to counter it. The scenario of garage-created bioweapons is thus real but so also are garage-created antidotes. Genetic engineering in the next decades will become just as easy as ordinary cooking. This is a fact that can cause anxiety as much as elation, the latter arising if cognizance is taken of the enormous benefits of genetic engineering. Genetic engineers in this regard should go full-steam ahead and not hold back, not for a second.
