Customer Reviews:
A horse health care book that doesn't mention colic?.......2006-01-22
This is a good basic book for beginners, but if you have any experience with horses at all it will be WAY to basic for you. it doesn't even mention colic! It should at least list the warning signs. The leg wrapping sections are useful, but really, does anyone really step by step instructions about how to put a blanket on a horse?
A great book for the new horse owner!.......2002-12-12
This is a great book for the new owner who hasn't been brought up aroung horses. It has great pictures and goes into a lot of detail about nutrition, vaccinations, illness/injury, age characteristics ect.
A Beginner's Guide.......2002-07-27
This is truly for a first-horse owner or someone who is leasing a horse and who wants to learn the basics of horse health care. I found several of the chapters useful for treatments that I needed to give for the first time, but there are other sections that aren't as practical and there is a lot of space devoted to black and white photographs, which are not too useful either as it's difficult to look for differences in texture or coloration that the text elaborates on. Having said this, for a true beginner it is an adequate foundation and would be appropriate for a younger rider/reader as well.
Only For Beginers.......2000-05-21
In my opinion, this book is not worth buying, unless you are truly a beginner. And even then, you will quickly outgrow this book. It contains practices that you can quickly pick up at the stable where your lessons are. To learn them from others at your stable will more likely help you, because it will be in more detail and you will watch someone do it.
This book made owning a horse a lot easier.......1999-09-02
Without Cherry Hill and her books with all the pictures I am sure I would have been panicking at every little scratch on my horses. She explains things so a non-horse person can understand without having to run to dictionaries or other horse reference books to look up her explaination. I buy all her books as I find them and enjoy her friendly way of writing. Thank you Cherry Hill for taking the time to make the explaination interesting and informative.

Go-Go and Buy this Book.......2003-01-20
This was the twelfth Simpsons Comics book I've read and, while it's not the best of the dozen, it is still a very funny book and a must for the Simpsons comics connoisseur (you got to love the cover art). Here's what you get:
"Rhymes and Misdemeanors": Martin Prince is in love with Lisa and, when his love is unrequited, they both do battle in the form of poetry readings at a nightclub dissing each other.
"The Great Springfield Frink-Out": A giant mishap occurs at the Frink labs (actually someone put tin foil in the microwave). This event causes everything to be topsy-turvy in
Springfield, for example, Marge is the mayor, Homer is a mobster, Cecil is the celebrity clown, and Bart has ambitions to be as cool as Milhouse.
"Tiger Teen": Fun mock mini mag in the style of those old 16 and Tiger Beat teen magazines of our youth. Of course, this one features Homer's barber shop group Be Sharps ("Homer Answers 40 Intimate Questions"-is that a perfect copy of those teen magazines or what?). There are also a few familiar names of 80s pop stars on the cover ("Cory Hart Takes off his Sunglasses-Exclusive photos!")
"Burnsie on Board": Mr. Burns tries to live out his boyhood dream of being an Olympic skiing gold medalist by enlisting the help of Bart.
"To Live and Diaper in Springfield": To pay for an expensive toilet paper dispenser Homer desires from an extravagant shopping network, Marge starts a daycare center. Her attention to other babies (particularly the one with the single eyebrow) causes Maggie to run away.
"Fan-Tasty Island": Mr. Burns needs a rare toxin to get by the Coalition to Reduce Air Pollution. This toxin can only be found inside a wood carving on a remote island. The perfect cover-up is to send a family to find the treasure-the Simpsons, of course. Very funny comic, but the ending is a little far-fetched.
A humorous collection........2001-10-03
This was a wonderful book that I enjoyed reading. It contains some hillarious comics that made my stomach hurt from laughing. It is another wonder of the Bongo Comics Group. It is an assential for any true simpsons fan.

Udseful in RCIA.......2001-05-20
Valuable insights not only for those married to Catholics, but also for others interested in learning about the Catholic Church. I will be using this book with my RCIA inquirers.
Okay, but not great.......2000-05-29
This book was an enjoyable, informative read, but I thought that the excessive use of cartoons detracted from the message rather than enhancing it. The content was good for day-to-day information about how a practicing Catholic follows his or her religion, but didn't give as much theological information as I was hoping for. I was also expecting more information on how to actually work out religious differences, but in reality there are just "Two Real-Life Stories" at the very end. The stories seemed a little too canned. Finally, I felt that the tone of the book was somewhat patronizing. The dictionary of Catholic terms, however, is very useful.
extremely informative, hits the basics.......1998-09-02
An easy to read, non-threatening style that informs without being boring. Covers lots of touchy subjects with sensitivity. Good balance of humor and seriousness, all Catholic adults would enjoy learning about their faith community through this format, one does not have to be married to benefit from this book. The Questions and Answers in each section relate to 'real life'. Excellent book, good for one's personal library.

More a fan book than a photography book.......2004-07-07
Let me explain. It's not that this book isn't filled with photographs. It is. And they're not bad photos either. The premise is to show candid shots of "stars" when they're not being filmed theatrically. Liz Taylor in full dress costume, practicing golf. Yul Brenner learning how to dance. The stolen moments part is seeing the people behind the famous characters they play both on the screen and often for the celebrity fixated fans. I think this is the PERFECT book for a movie buff. Or somene who loves celebrities. Or perhaps a fan who hasn't quite got the clue that actors are just that, actors and not a larger-than-life character or hero. But if you're looking for amazing photos or shots that inspire you to find a cure for the common cold, this ain't the book.
just perfect.......2004-06-30

I bought this book to help me study for a Governmental Accounting class final. I wish I had the book the entire semester. It's a well written, concise book that boils down the intricate details of governmental accounting that is presented in text books into the more manageable and understandable essentials. It must have helped, because I ended up receiving an "A" in the course.

Book Description
Edvard Radzinsky is justly famous as both a biographer and a dramatist, and he brings both skills to bear in this vivid, page-turning, rich portrait of one of the greatest of all Romanovs. Alexander II was Russia's Lincoln -- he freed the serfs, promised a new, more liberal state for everyone, yet was brought down by a determined group of terrorist anarchists who tried to kill him six times before finally, fatefully, succeeding. His story proves the timeless lesson that in Russia, it is dangerous to start reforms, but even more dangerous to stop them. It also shows that the traps and dangers encountered in today's war on terrorists were there 150 years ago.
Download Description
"Alexander II was Russia's Lincoln, and the greatest reformer tsar since Peter the Great. He was also one of the most contradictory, and fascinating, of history's supreme leaders. He freed the serfs, yet launched vicious wars. He engaged in the sexual exploits of a royal Don Juan, yet fell profoundly in love. He ruled during the ""Russian Renaissance"" of Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Turgenev -- yet his Russia became the birthplace of modern terrorism. His story could be that of one of Russia's greatest novels, yet it is true. It is also crucially important today. It is a tale that runs on parallel tracks. Alexander freed 23 million Russian slaves, reformed the justice system and the army, and very nearly became the father of Russia's first constitution and the man who led that nation into a new era of western-style liberalism. Yet it was during this feverish time that modern nihilism first arose. On the sidelines of Alexander's state dramas, a group of radical, disaffected young people first experimented with dynamite, and first began to use terrorism. Fueled by the writings of a few intellectuals and zealots, they built bombs, dug tunnels, and planned ambushes. They made no less than six unsuccessful attempts on Alexander's life. Finally, the parallel tracks joined, when a small cell of terrorists, living next door to Dostoevsky, built the fatal bomb that ended the life of the last great Tsar. It stopped Russian reform in its tracks. Edvard Radzinsky is justly famous as both a biographer and a dramatist, and he brings both skills to bear in this vivid, page-turning, rich portrait of one of the greatest of all Romanovs. Delving deep into the archives, he raises intriguing questions about the connections between Dostoevsky and the young terrorists, about the hidden romances of the Romanovs, and about the palace conspiracies that may have linked hard-line aristocrats with their nemesis, the young nihilists. Alexander's life proves the timeless lesson that in Russia, it is dangerous to start reforms, but even more dangerous to stop them. It also shows that the traps and dangers encountered in today's war on terrorists were there from the start. "
Customer Reviews:
A GREAT BOOK.......2007-02-21
Very informative and exciting biography on Alexander II. Defiently and interesting person. The one who freed the serfs, lowered censorship, and promised a Constitution for Russia. Every big step he took Alexander then took two steps back. He certainly realized Russia needed changes and came up with good ideas on how to change Russia for the better but never completely followed through whether he was unwilling or unable to follow through because of himself, the people around him or the revolutionists or a mixture of all three at he was trying. You can't help but wonder what would of happened if Aexander had actually gone through with each of his plans. The author gave good descriptions of everyone in the book from Alexander, his family and even the revolutionists. His private life was just as messy with between his two marriages and two families. I thought it was a little cold and cruel to move in his mistress and later second wife and their children while his wife was dying. Other then that it was a great bio.
The Perils Of Half-Hearted Liberalism.......2007-01-16
Radzinsky paints a compelling portrait of Alexander II, who he terms as Russia's Last Great Tsar, and, implicitly, the last figure with a chance to prevent the Russian Revolution to come.
Radzinsky deals with Alexander's formative years, as the tsarevich under the conservative Nicholas I. Russia in its final years seemed to be the epitome as thesis begets antithesis as reformists tsars were followed by conservative ones.
One of Alexander's first actions after being crowned was to free the Russian serfs. Unfortunately, in what was to become a theme of his reign, he attempted to chart a middle course, and the serfs were "freed" but not given full control over the land that they owned, he started political liberalization, than drew back from it.
Unwilling to either crack down on rebellion fully, or eliminate the conservative elements, Russia began to build up steam internally as the anarchists began to organize. The Liberalizing element, seeing little hope from the regime, was faced with either accomadting to the current path or to go into violent plotting against the regime.
After Alexander's first round of reforms, he shifted into idle. It is at the point that Radzinsky deviates from his following of the tsar, and dives into the story of the plotters and revolutionaries that would ultimately commit regicide. This deviation may seem like a distraction, but it shows the complete inertia of St. Petersburg as to what was actually going on in the country.
As he entered his late 50's Alexander prepared a second round of reforms, including a constitution. However, at this point the radicals were gaining strength and preparing their plots. The reforms would be aborted by the tsar's death before they could be put in place.
Alexander III, would prove to be the conservative opposite of his father and hold down the boiling pot that was Russia until it finally erupted under Nicholas II.
Interesting perspectives on the tensions of reform.......2007-01-03
This suffers from some occasional awkwardness in the translation and a rather sweeping style, but it is generally well written and kept my attention through some complex politics.
A central theme is the tension between reformist liberalism and retrograde conservatism. Alexander II disappointed the liberals by moving too slowly on reform and he appalled the conservatives by the limited reforms he espoused. So reformist terrorists wanted to assassinate him (expecting to unleash a popular uprising and a quick utopia) and retrograde court politicians were quite happy to see him die (to allow his replacement by his conservative heir).
The rise of the terrorist movement is chilling to read about. Somehow intelligent, well-meaning people managed to convince themselves that a wave of terrorism and murder (including the killing of many innocent bystanders) was a public virtue worth dieing for.
Part of this was caused by a deadly feedback loop which was deliberately fed by some early revolutionaries. They aimed to provoke the government into an oppressive crackdown which would antagonize intellectuals and move them towards radicalism. One early revolutionary deliberately mailed inflammatory literature to a large number of innocent people, knowing that it would be intercepted and the recipients harassed (possibly arrested or thrown out of university) and thus potentially radicalized. Yikes.
Alexander II survived a long series of assassination attempts. He was no longer able to go for casual walks around St Petersburg after being shot at (and chased!) during one walk. His railway journeys required vast security after an accompanying train was blown up. His dining room in the Winter Palace was blown up as he arrived for a dinner.
Why was the vast secret police organization so ineffective in detecting and arresting the would be assassins? Well, they had been penetrated by a terrorist spy. But the author also postulates that many senior leaders were not that interested in preventing the Tsar's death. In the end, he was duly killed by an assassin's bomb and succeeded by the reactionary Alexander III.
Alexander II.......2006-11-06
This book by a contemporary Russian writer clearly translated into modern idiomatic English by Antonia W. Bouis explains the complex history and politics leading up to the reign of the "Last Great Tsar" and the series of disasters that followed. A fascinating subject well presented. I can't wait to read another Radzinsky book.
Drama, Romance, Heroism, Betrayal -- What More Could Be Asked?.......2006-11-05
I have been an avid consumer of Russian history books since I was a small child. (My father taught Russian history). I had always admired Emperor Alexander II, who freed the peasants from centuries-old enslavement, and tried to steer Russia on a moderate course. I had always wondered why this handsome, kindly, romantic and very able ruler never got a good modern biography like Russia's other two great rulers, Peter the Great, and Catherine the Great.
Edvard Radzinsky's book definitely meets the need for a readable, dramatic account of Alexander II's life. It reads like a historical novel, filled with drama and intrigue.
But it is the true story of a hero who was eventually murdered -- just as he was preparing Russsia's first constitution -- and who may have been betrayed to his death through an odd alliance between his opponents on the extreme left and the extreme right, neither of whom wanted Alexander to create a moderate, constitutional government.
I had not known that Alexander's court also feared that he would replace the heir to the throne -- his very conservative, reactionary oldest son, Grand Duke Alexander, with his much younger half-brother, Gregory, Alexander's son by a mistress that he had recently married.
It is a valuable cautionary tale for anyone seeking to create major societal change -- or anyone seeking an absorbing, eventful story as fascinating as any of the novels of Tolstoy or Dostoevsky that were written during Alexander's reign.

Book Description
The mysterious death of Ron Brown has caused much controversy and suspicion, and in this investigative book, Cashill takes a close look at Brown's checkered career as Clinton fund-raiser and commerce secretary and consequently exposes the Clintons' dirty, relentless practices for getting financial backing. Cashill answers the most trenchant questions surrounding Brown's rise and fall: Why did his plane crash? Why did the White House suppress an investigation? What was the purpose of Brown's trade missions? And what larger forces caused the Clintons to seek international cash? Using the case of Ron Brown's untimely death as a touchstone for the Clintons' unseemly and unsavory practices in the White House, Cashill explores the seedy depths of the most corrupt adminstration in American history during its two most desperate years and focuses directly on the machinations of the direst threat to today's political scene, Hillary Clinton.
Customer Reviews:
Not just the sausage making, but the whole abattoir.......2006-11-23
Nearly flawless telling of another unreported tale. When a nitwit like Cindy Sheehan can get on TV any time she wants by uttering inanities and lies, while this book gets ignored, we know a lot about the press in this country. This is some serious "truth to power" folks.....Read the tale of Clinton's creation of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and tell me how this wasn't a payback.
There is little point refuting the ad hominem attacks. These folks have not read the book, or suffer from that common disease of the left, "one-drop" thinking. In other words, one drop of evil, sin, or error permanently removes the sufferer from all future discussion. Therefore, it is vital to never be tainted with that drop. This is why the left feels they can shut up critics by smugly calling them racists, assuming no one else will listen again to one so thoroughly discredited. This effective way of disposing of opponents goes way back; Lenin said, "Why should we bother to reply to Kautski? He would reply to us, and we would have to reply to his reply. There's no end to that. It will be quite well enough for us to announce that Kautski is a traitor to the working class, and everyone will understand everything."
Thus the desperation to avoid any taint on either Clinton, even when the evidence is spelled out in names, dates and places. Once besmirched, they would be removed from all future thought. Only pure candidates can represent the left, and so they must define their candidates as pure and fight to the death those who propose otherwise. Just as only thugs, loonies, hypocrites, religious cranks, racists, Fascists or other nitwits could possibly question or criticize those saintly members of the pantheon. (And they think I operate on a foolish faith???)
Anyway, to the topic at hand. Jack Cashill (Clintonesque full disclosure: Jack and I go way back, having grown up near each other in New Jersey and still maintaining a close and deep friendship; honest full disclosure: I've met him at a book signing and e-mailed him a couple of times) is a smart man with a fire in his belly to expose corruption and decay wherever he finds it. That makes investigating the 8 years of Clinton a full-time job. No friend of Big Business, no lackey of any label that could not be defined, Jack evaluates and exposes whatever he turns up. For as this book amply, consistently, and with extensive footnotes and as much corroboration from folks who would never be in anyone's VRWC (except Hillary's, who defines all those who question as such) demonstrates, the Clinton years would require a lot of scouring to rise to the level of cesspool. For 4 years the only apparent purpose of the Department of Commerce was to raise money for the Clinton campaigns, and Ron Brown was the designated hustler. From chaperoning business executives to Asia, strong-arming reluctant foreigners, or promulgating policies designed to pay back those contributors, the Clintons and their increasingly reluctant bagboy Ron Brown spent years hawking whatever they had to sell. And raising buckets of money doing so.
Well Ron had second thoughts, reluctantly departed on a poorly organized, hastily arranged trip, and died in a most mysterious manner. Those are facts. How he ended up on that hillside is the story Jack tells, and though all explanations are indeed merely conjecture, since those who know are either dead or not speaking, he makes a mighty convincing case. Read this to see how your welfare and safety have been sold, and how you got nothing from the sale but a degraded and cheesy President.
I'd dock a half-star for the incessant phony suspense "This is something Ron would only learn much later, when it was too late." Organ wheeze! The writing is corny in the beginning, but once Jack gets rolling, it is a freight-train of power as its sordid and miserable story unfolds. And photos. Two pictures? That's all? With so many characters, a few photos (or none) would have been nice. Minor quibbles in an otherwise gripping, serious book.
Great book, read it........2006-06-29
Very well written, never a dull moment. Interesting to connect the dots with other topical issues during the same presidency. A little research by the readers will show some interesting "occurrences".
the criticism lacks merit.......2005-12-28
Some critics committed an Ad Hominem fallacy by accusing Cashill of political and financial motivations.
A critic committed a Guilt By Association fallacy by associating the book with some supposedly dubious, unrelated theories. Another critic used the term "conspiracy theory" as a code word for that same fallacy.
A critic said the book has limited or no proof. We must pass judgment based on limited proof everyday as you can see in the courts, which have standards of "preponderance of evidence" and "beyond a reasonable doubt." Because of strong proof, Jesse Jackson called for a new investigation two years after Brown's death, as reported in the AP on 1/5/98. Since then the proof has only grown stronger, with this book as a watershed for completeness and new evidence.
A critic said "the author relies just a tad bit too much on one of Brown's companions." The book shows how Nolanda Hill demonstrated her credibility and how she came to know what she does. She makes a valuable source. ABC agreed when they interviewed her on Prime Time Live. You can find the transcript easily.
A critic said the book "overdoes it with the melodramatic foreshadowing. We all know what happened to Brown so there's no need to harp on what's coming in each chapter." Readers know that Brown died but they do not know exactly how and, until they finish the book, they lack interesting evidence.
Lower than a snake's belly in a wagon rut.......2005-12-23
How low does a man have to stoop before he uses another's death-and the deaths of 34 others in a horrific plane crash-for a political hatchet job?
"Have you no decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"
The audience for this book will best be found among unreconstructed McCarthyites, folks so utterly convinced of their essential rightness on every point that they are willing to abandon all decency in pursuit of their goals. Those who feel comfortable misdirecting voters on election day, ripping out others' yard signs, and perhaps even falsifying an electronic ballot memory card or two (for a higher cause, no doubt!) should feel just fine reading a book that confirms their dearly held prejudices.
Others may wish to shower thoroughly after reading how Jack Cashill proposes to cash in on the dead, pushing the political agendas of the same folks who tried so hard to smear honored veterans like McCain and Kerry.
ron brown's body:how one man's death saved..........2005-10-04
I thought the book sounded thorough and authentic and was well written.
