This is a fantastic series.It was started by CLAMP years ago and they are only just now starting it back up.It's a dark story about the end of the world and a single boy, Kamui.The art is fantastic, the battles are magnificent in their brutality.Don't read this if your under the age of thierteen.It's a good story that leaves you eager to know what happens next as Kamui fights for the lives of those he loves.

If you have more than a base understanding of modern(20th century) music and what led up to it, this is a thorough and accessible work. I highly recommend it for anyone who is a theorist, composer, or music enthusiast. If you are not well-versed in music, this may be a bit much.

This book is one of the best for strategy framework and methodology formulation. It is also very useful for case interviews. I enjoyed this book.......2006-07-13

I was reading some reviews here and was surprised that they found this book "offensive", because either they knew better part of the city or Stapinski's family members stole, could not drive, drank, etc. WHY????? Haven't you stole an ashtray from downtown cafe once? Ever? Or haven't you taken a bunch of ketcup packets from fastfood joint? .. OK, all I'm saying is to lighten up a little. I think tragedies and craziness of her family are written here with great humor and affection. And who doesn't have one crazy person in their family? I could feel lump in my throat when I read the part where her daddy died. If you like to read something filled with morals and displines, then this book is not for you. But if you like to laugh and cry over real people with vivid characters, you should try this one.

Stapinski relates growing up in Jersey City in a fresh and honest way. And her recounting of the blighted history of Jersey City politics is a head-shaking hoot. As for the popularity of her opinions about JC and its denizens, well, that has no bearing on whether this book is a great read; it is.

LOVED the humor of this book........2005-11-29

I've come to know and appreciate Jersey City on my own, since I became a volunteer historian at The Stanley Theatre 6 years ago. I've had to go the JC Public Library and had the pleasure of going thru the NJ Room, as well as meeting great people (Cynthia, Bruce, and Leon Yost -'Jersey Citians'(?). I've grown up in urban areas (i.e, Newark/Irvington), and now live in the suburbs in another County, but have come to appreciate Jersey City very much.

Jersey City has some wonderful historic sites, as well as areas that have been revitalized by citizens who take pride in their communities. I'm sure that the folks who've taken exception to many aspects of this book have their own arguments, that are probably even valid. But Ms. Stapinski's story is HER family story, the good, bad, and ugly.

There are wonderful Jersey City Arcadia-published books on various historical aspects, but Ms. Stapinski's personal account with "Five Finger Discount" was close to home for me, because my paternal grandfather was somewhat like her Grandpa, and my grandfather was sent to Trenton State Prison in the 1960's for illegal gambling, as well as not naming names.

I also read her "Baby Plays Around" and if nothing else, one has to admit that Ms. Stapinski's candor and raw emotion comes through in both published works.

If I could give this book 0 stars I would. I think this portrays a horrible vision of how Jersey City was during that time period. I grew up in Jersey City during 80's early 90's. My parents spent all of their lives there. I am actually jealous when I hear about all of the fun they had during their childhood an in their 20's. They have the best stories and had the best times of their life in Jersey City. They developed close knit life long friendships with friends they met at an early age. My mother grew up in St. Al's parish and my father grew up in Our Lady of Victories parish. It did not give a true picture of Jersey City. She should have just harped on downtown which was trashy instead of bad mouthing the whole city.
This is an embarassment to people who lived there to have others who are unfamilar with Jersey City read this garbage. I highly DO NOT recommend this.

All too true.......2004-01-01

I grew up in the Greenville section of Jersey City in the 60's and 70's and I think that Helene Stapinski's depiction of Jersey City is spot-on. Not only was it a dreary and dirty place to live, it was also filled with some of the most narrow-minded, intolerant and racist people I ever had the misfortune of knowing. I attended Catholic grade school and high school there, but after graduation I moved away, and my family did the same a few years later. Despite assurances by some of my relatives that the place had changed, I went back to visit a friend who teaches at St. Peter's College and it was still the same Jersey City, complete with the same tight-faced people riding the #10 bus down Kennedy Blvd. Stapinski's book may not be popular among the locals, but her depiction is true.

This is the autobiography and family history of Helene Stapinski of Jersey City. She has a family as dysfunctional as any you're likely to encounter, from a grandfather who threw a woman down the stairs for asking for money (and later trying to shoot his whole family), to pretty much everyone for four generations - involved in crime, from bookmaking to bribery and theft. Intertwined is the history of Jersey City and the politicians who run it. They follow the same revolting patterns as her family, only on a larger and uglier scale. It would be hard to believe this story is true, except that almost daily, headlines coming from that pimple continue to keep the legend alive. Crooked judges? Not much different today. Corrupt mayors? Still being investigated even as we speak.

The most affecting line, repeated several times, is that you can never really leave Jersey City. It keeps dragging you back, by embarrassment, as a place to hide, as a result of failure, because a relative is in need... on and on. Leaving its clutches seems to be tough. Everyone is compromised to some degree. Everyone is corrupted. No one is spared. This is the New Jersey we love to hate. The stench and the pollution that is the visible legacy of New Jersey rates very little examination. It's almost trivial by comparison to the human waste. The total lack of Christian values - despite the Catholic upbringing from both sides (Italian and Polish) of her family - is compounded by the corruption and hipocrisy of the church as well. Totally consistent with the rest of the story.

Sadly, it is all true. In this book, it's all normal. It unravels as if it were a typical family in a typical town in a typical state. Very engaging.

I finished with more questions than answers........2003-02-25

I am on an endless quest, it seems; to find a book on the administrative state that is informative while being at least mildly enthusiastic about its subject. This book starts out enthusiastic. This book certainly started with enthusiasm. The first chapter, in fact, is devoted to convincing us why the administrative state is a superb American invention (a view I do not always share!) Chapter 5, which is devoted to public participation in the Admin. state also bubbles with giddiness.

Like a horse on crack-cocaine, though, this book stars with gallant speed, slows down fast and ends with an mild gasp. I'm sure this was not the authors intention. There are two main reasons. First, as the book is structured so that each chapter examines another area of admin. state rule making (oversight from the 3 branches, rulemaking structure, inherent paradoxes of the process) the first two chapters, which are almost overviews of the rest of the book, builds up high expectations. For example, when the first chapter lightly nibbles at rulemaking's structural issues, tow paragraphs in we are told that we will need to wait untill another chapter for a discussion. The author does this repeatedly throughout the book, thus leaving the reader in a constant hang.

The second reason for the flickering finish of the book is that, and unfortunately as with most admin. state books, not much save for completely varied anecdotal information is offered. How are rules written, the book asks; it depends on the administration, it answers. What about modes of public participation and debate? Depends on the rules of the comission. After a while, its almost pointless to read the next chapter as we begin to guess the answer to each question posed.

The reason, though, for the three stars is this: Chapter 1 (on justifications for the admin. state), Chapter 3(paradoxes inherent in the rulemaking process) and Chapter 7 (the role of theory in rulemaking and its reform) are actually decent and informative chapters. Vagueness aside, they do provide useful anecdotes. Also Chapters 3 and 7 present ideas, discussions and points that are all but ignored in other books on admin. state rulemaking. Buy the book, read those 3 chapters and maybe skim the rest.
