Theory in Contemporary Art since 1985
ASIN: 1854373455 |
Book Description
In its brief history, Internet art has moved from being the concern of amateurs to a position of prominence in the art world. The rapidly evolving technology of the Internet drives the art along with it, bringing in its wake revivals of the avant-garde and modernism long since thought dead. Although material art often feels disengaged with the world when viewed in conventional galleries, Internet art is often humorous, socially aware, and politically active.
In an accessible and jargon-free manner, Internet Art explores the character of this new, dematerialized online art and the environment in which it exists. It also shows how artists have responded to the rapid and profound changes that have swept the Internet since the mid-1990s, above all its transformation into an arena for consumerism. In an analysis of the sometimes hostile relations between the art world and on-line art, the book suggests that this new art may have radical implications for the ways in which we conceive of art's authorship and ownership, and how we draw the borders between what is art and what is not.

Internet as a medium for artistic expression.......2005-06-02
I found this book to focus less about the art on the internet and more of a critique of it. Though it cites examples, it rather addresses issues about the internets role in culture, its role in the public domain vs. privitization, philosophies of internet and interactivity. The book is quite interesting and brings up issues that should be activly looked at in todays commercial world. I recommend this to all artists who are active in working with multimedia or even those in advertising and marketing who would like to brush up on some marketing schemes and how the internet applys to todays commercial world.

Warning on using chemicals in this book........2005-03-06
WARNING MACARTHY'S BOOK GIVES USES FOR CARBON TETRACHLORIDE, DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL--EVEN ONE BEER--WITHIN 24 HOURS, BEFORE OR AFTER, OF USING CARBON TET--THE COMBO HAS A SYNERGISTIC EFFECT THAT CAN KILL YOU!
This is a great special effects book but the author is not an organic chemist and so didn't know this. (Carbon tet used to be very comon in cleaners and was thought safe at one time.) Since the author gives a number of chemical recipes you should be cautious about drinking before, or after, or during the use of any of them.
Otherwise this is a great book. There is very little overlap between this book and Bernard Wilkie's CREATING SPECIAL EFFECTS FOR TV AND VIDEO so you might want to get both.
The special effect bible.......1998-12-24
Nothing compares to this book when it comes to special effects, the incredible amount of information is hard to find outside of this book

So Far from God: A Novel
ASIN: 0385503423
Release Date: 2002-09-17 |
Book Description
From an artist whose work has appeared in more than 100 television commercials, films, and music videos, NARCISSA is Lance Tooks' beautifully drawn, compelling story of one woman's journey to self-discovery.
Narcissa, a talented and self-centered independent filmmaker, is collapsing under the strain of her critics--the "enlightened" people who are trying to get her to compromise her integrity. The stress is killing her--literally. Warned that if she tries to complete her current project she'll be dead in a week, Narcissa decides to escape the chaos that surrounds her--and fears the fears that threaten to overwhelm her--by traveling to Spain. As she encounters new people, places, and experiences, Narcissa gradually comes to a deeper understanding of who she is and what she is doing with her life.
Depicting Narcissa's journey with compassion and wit, Lance Tooks has created an episodic, thoroughly engrossing, exisential tale that will long resonate with readers.

Narcissa - A Journey of Self-Discovery.......2002-12-12
Who is Narcissa, the protagonist of the eponymous graphic novel? As her name implies, Narcissa is a narcissist.
She is so absorbed in her life and work that she pushes herself to the point of collapse. Upon waking up in a hospital, a doctor tells her that she has one week to live. As a result, Narcissa embarks on a journey to assess her life.
Narcissa turns her back on the film she worked so hard to bring to life. She heads to Spain simply because it is the next flight that is leaving when she arrives at the airport. A stranger in a strange land, she finds friendship, love and the strength to go on with her life.
Due to the highly introspective nature of this journey, a great deal of emphasis is place on the words. The words are needed to clarify pictures which, as often as not, show Narce in various states of emotional distress. As the story progresses, she shares her thoughts and memories, showing how she came to be the person she is.
In Narcissa, the graphics are more than illustrations that merely show a photographic representation of a given scene. Drawn in thick black lines, these spare pictures eloquently and powerfully depict how Narcissa sees her world. The occasional photographic background accents the surreal nature of Narcissa's journey into the heart of her own personal darkness.
In the end, Narcissa is an inspirational tale of the strength of one person as she struggles to find meaning in her life. This graphic novel is truly a work of art.

Book Description
This is the ultimate collection of quotations from famous people about famous people. From Martin Amis on Jimmy Connors and Jane Austen on Henry VIII, to Liz Hurley on Marilyn Monroe, there are over 4,000 quotations about both historical and contemporary figures from all over the world. The speakers are often as well known as the people they are talking about, and come from a broad range of disciplines rnd professions, including actors, architects, dancers, historians, mathematicians, literary figures, politicians, academics, sports personalities, and scientists. All the quotations about each individual are brought together in an entry headed by a brief description, making it possible to compare what different people have said about one particular person. A detailed author index gives a context line from each quotation, biographical information on authors, and an overview of their comments, often revealing their personalities. Entertaining and perfect for browsing, it is also a valuable biographical resource. Who could fathom Plato's mind? Unless one is a genius philosophy is a mug's game Iris Murdoch on Plato He was a good man, but did not know how to paint El Greco on Michelangelo Madame Curie is very intelligent but as cold as a herring Albert Einstein on Marie Curie We elected a President, not a Pope Barbara Streisand on Bill Clinton His technique is astounding, yet everything is accomplished with the air of someone sauntering through the park on a spring morning Margot Fonteyn on Fred Astaire Keep your eyes on him; some day he will give the world something to talk about Mozart on Beethoven

About the best available, that's still in print.......2003-08-30
This anthology of biographical quotations is the best of a thin field. It contains about 400 pages of quotes, distributed among the great, the notorious, and current celebrities. Most of the subjects are English and American, with a smattering of European worthies added in. The tone of the collection tends to wisecrackery. A fun collection for dipping, but more solid reference tomes of biographical quotations have been compiled.

Ditto.......2003-05-20
I agree completely with the other reviewer, and have nothing to add of value, other than to say that this book is disappointing compared to my initital expectation that Karpov was going to be taching a kind if chess course in this book.
Chess kaleidoscope.......2001-01-03
Quite an interesting book. I especially loved the totally outdated section on computer chess. I'm a software engineer and I have been following the development of chess playing software for a few years. Its rather amusing to read the naive predictions(from the 80s) of how computers will never beat a grandmaster. Now computers are thrashing grandmasters by the dozen and even Kasparov is not spared. Well to give Karpov credit at least one of his predictions came true : chess software can now play 5 - 6 piece endgames perfectly.
The first part of this book is just a bunch of chess puzzles(some really interesting ones) with annotations by Karpov (and co-authour Gik). Once in a while Karpov throws in some endgame wisdom such as triangulation(losing the tempo) and the rule of the square which might be of interest to the beginner.
The editon I got was printed in a monotyped font and looks like it came out fresh from a typewriter. But I guess the effect was on purpose because the book is written as a set of letters and Karpov may want the book to look letter-like.
There is a section (letter) about the best games from the World Championships.(from Steinitz until Karpov)There is also a letter on Karpov's best games and a story on how he met his co-author Gik.
Overall an interesting book to read (like a trivia book) but quite useless for serious study. As its title suggest it gives you a kaleidoscopic survey of diferrent areas of chess interest. Three stars because the book suddenly ends went things begin to become interesting. Could be better if there is more content. The book was translated from Russian so I can't comment on Karpov's writing style. If you are looking for a book to improve your chess look somewhere else.
Book Description
This book is designed to prepare a student to pass the Principles of Management CLEP test. It contains a subject matter review and a sample test. This book contains all the material from Donald Hovey's popular "Introduction to Management" study guide. This is the guide you need if you want a clear, concise guide for the Principles of Management Examination. The new 2002 edition of this guide contains a special section on how to take the computerized version of the test.
Customer Reviews:
somewhat satisfied.......2007-09-21
The material in the book was very good. However, the practice tests were nothing like the real exam. The exam did not have any "all of the above", or "none of the above", options in any of the 100 questions, yet one in every five practice question had that option.
THANKS FOR A JOB WELL DONE!.......2007-01-09
Thank you for a fast shipping of the book, Review for the CLEP Principles of Management!
My review for CLEP Principles of Management.......2007-01-06
I studied this book for about a week. I read the whole book and answered all of the questions at the end of each chapter and at the back of the book.
I did great on this test. The test administrator said I had one of the highest scores she had seen come through the office.
I would recommend this book to anyone.
Great Review for the Principles of Management CLEP!.......2006-12-22
I took this CLEP this morning and passed with a 66. I only used this book & the CLEP Official Study Guide (for the practice test). I studied for exactly 1 week maybe 1 1/2 - 2 hours per day.
This guide really is perfect for this CLEP. I have used REA study guides for the other 2 CLEP's I've taken, but bought the Comex study guide for Principles of Management based on all of the positive reviews.
This was the easiest CLEP (in my opinion) out of the 3 I've taken in total. (I also took Principles of Marketing & Introduction to Sociology.) It took the least amount of study time out of the 3 as well.
The Comex guide is short and sweet. It contains everything you'll need to know to pass this CLEP. Good luck!
THIS CLEP REVIEW IS PRETTY GOOD.......2006-12-14
I bought the principles of management clep review booklet about 3-4 weeks ago. THIS is the only peiece of material I used to study for the clep exam. Its 6 chapters, and they all range from 8 to 12 pages long, so its not a long tedius read. Needless to say, I read about a chapter or two a week, did the review test at the end of each chapter, and did a complete review the day before the test. WITH THIS PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT CLEP REVIEW, I was successfully able to pass the clep exam with a 58. The highest you can get is a 80. The test was pretty decent, but I have to admit there are some questions on there that will have you scratching your head because the review guide didin't mention it. Regardless, this review guide is good enough leave the exam with a passing score. CHEERS!
Book Description
A young girl is perched on the cold chrome of yet another doctor’s examining table, missing yet another day of school. Just twelve, she’s tall, skinny, and weak. It’s four o’clock, and she hasn’t been allowed to eat anything all day. Her mother, on the other hand, seems curiously excited. She's about to suggest open-heart surgery on her child to "get to the bottom of this." She checks her teeth for lipstick and, as the doctor enters, shoots the girl a warning glance. This child will not ruin her plans.
Sickened
From early childhood, Julie Gregory was continually X-rayed, medicated, and operated on—in the vain pursuit of an illness that was created in her mother’s mind. Munchausen by proxy (MBP) is the world’s most hidden and dangerous form of child abuse, in which the caretaker—almost always the mother—invents or induces symptoms in her child because she craves the attention of medical professionals. Many MBP children die, but Julie Gregory not only survived, she escaped the powerful orbit of her mother's madness and rebuilt her identity as a vibrant, healthy young woman.
Sickened is a remarkable memoir that speaks in an original and distinctive Midwestern voice, rising to indelible scenes in prose of scathing beauty and fierce humor. Punctuated with Julie's actual medical records, it re-creates the bizarre cocoon of her family's isolated double-wide trailer, their wild shopping sprees and gun-waving confrontations, the astonishing naïveté of medical professionals and social workers. It also exposes the twisted bonds of terror and love that roped Julie's family together—including the love that made a child willing to sacrifice herself to win her mother's happiness.
The realization that the sickness lay in her mother, not in herself, would not come to Julie until adulthood. But when it did, it would strike like lightning. Through her painful metamorphosis, she discovered the courage to save her own life—and, ultimately, the life of the girl her mother had found to replace her.
Sickened takes us to new places in the human heart and spirit. It is an unforgettable story, unforgettably told.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-09-20
This is an excellent book about what survivors of Munchausen's by Proxy live with. I especially liked the author's description of how she thought her early experiences were "normal" and how she still felt close to her parents for a while as an adult in spite of the abuse she endured.
This book will make you inspect yourself..........2007-06-11
I guess I had a pretty normal childhood. After reading Julie's book, I certainly feel that way. I also realize how little I look at others as people. I mean, sure I see everyone as people, but thinking more deeply as to why people do things... well, I don't do that often. So, when I meet someone who is eccentric and hard to understand, maybe I'm quick to judge and brush off as merely "too different" for me. This book made me realize that there's so much more to people than what I see. This disorder could have affected anyone I may meet... how do you know? I feel I may be able to see other's lives from a new perspective, one that is more loving and caring than anything I've ever been taught, or anything I've ever tried. I think many people will feel the same.
Sad Beyond Belief .......2007-05-23
Julie Gregory must be an amazing sole to have lived this life and survived. I have heard a little about MBP but after reading this book, I want to learn more. I need to learn more. Julie's horrific childhood consisted of abuse and torture...of the body and mind. Her childhood was stripped away from her at the hands of those who should have protected her. Be prepared emotionally to read a very descriptive book that will make you hug your child and thank your mother.
Unsettling story of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy.......2007-02-13
"Sickened" is an autobiography about the victim of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MBP). MBP is a mental disorder in which a person (usually a mother) inflicts injury on another (usually a child) in order to gain attention and praise. In this case, the author's mother was the predator. It's hard to believe that anyone's childhood could be this awful. Ms. Gregory's childhood was not full of love, but of horrible abuse - such as being starved, given medicine to make her sick, subjected to rigorous and invasive medical tests and procedures for no reason, and being forced to work on the family farm for hours every day while trying to recover from surgery. Not only was her mother abusive, but her father was as well, beating her and (somehow worse) forcing her to eat his used Kleenex. It's shocking to read about how greedy and selfish they are, about the mother taking in foster children and elderly people for the money and then abusing them.
The author does a wonderful job of explaining the disorder, gives a lot of insight into her childhood and information about her family. The book isn't long and is relative fast-paced. It's equally interesting and horrifying. She definitely has a gift for writing. The book flows well, but does slow down a bit when we get to the part about her going to college, and living in her house of mirrors. Somehow, it doesn't seem that she got into much detail about when she found out about MBP her exploration of condition. She doesn't talk much about her therapy, either.
I'm disappointed that there's not much of a follow-up on the book. What happened to the mother? Has she been prosecuted? Is she still taking in foster children? The author has a website, but the link to the "update" page is broken.
This is a very personal and educational book. I highly recommend it to those who are interested in reading about mental conditions.
Strong and horrifying at first, but the end is a little meh........2007-01-13
Abnormal psychology is another passion of mine. Pretty much the weirder it is, the more I want to know about it. Whilst my favourite disorders are ones like alexithymia and dissociative identity disorder that's severe enough to have dissociative fugues, ones that are transferred onto others strike me as just the weirdest things ever. For those who haven't heard of the disorder, Munchausen syndrome is a disorder in which patients feign illness in order to get attention from people. They're willing to go to all lengths in order to get this attention no matter how painful the procedure may be. In order to avoid being diagnosed with the disorder, the patients will bounce around from doctor to doctor, claiming that when a doctor doesn't find anything wrong with them, it's because the doctor is just a poorly educated doctor who will likely be sued in the near future because he or she didn't find whatever was wrong with the patient.
This may seem like a horrible position to place one's self in, but it does get worse. Beyond this first-person disease is something that crosses into the realms of child abuse, a condition known as 'Munchausen syndrome by proxy.' The Merck Manual, basically my medical bible, gives the best definition of this:
The adult falsifies history and may injure the child with drugs or other agents or add blood or bacterial contaminants to urine specimens to simulate disease. The parent seeks medical care for the child and appears to be deeply concerned and protective. The child typically has a history of frequent hospitalizations, usually for a variety of nonspecific symptoms, but no firm diagnosis. Victimized children may be seriously ill and sometimes die.
Although this usually happens to young children and, because medical professionals are now more familiar because of high-profile MBP cases, the children are taken away from their parents, it is rare to see a person who remains in a MBP situation until adulthood. Julie Gregory, however, remained with her abusive parents until she was eighteen and found herself wandering back to them even to her thirties. Born prematurely to an anorexic mother, she was very ill in infancy. Appreciative of the attention people doled out to her because of her sickly baby, she decided to mentally profit from it. As a child, Julie was carted around from doctor to doctor as her mother demanded they 'find out what was wrong with [her].' She had all sorts of tests done on her, had an entire cabinet in the kitchen devoted to just her medications, and never really got a chance at school because her mother was carting her around Ohio looking for the next doctor to check her out.
In order to make her appear sick, her mother rarely allowed her to eat. When she went in for cardiologist appointments, her body struggled when she even tried to stand. She was always tired, and when writing this memoir, she remembered that at no point did anyone ask if she'd been eating. When she was finally admitted to a hospital for observation and began eating, there was a marked improvement in her health, but afraid that they would send her home, she began making herself sick in the hopes that she would be able to remain there. Once liberated from her parents after her mother tried to do an arranged marriage between her and a man twice her age, Julie sunk into her own little pit of despair especially after hearing about MBP in a psychology class but then also finding that no therapist she talked to had even heard of the disorder.
From the time she is emancipated until the book ends, she tries to make amends with her parents but finds that despite all outward appearances, neither of them has changed at all since her childhood. Her mother has continued MBP with a new adopted daughter and Julie makes it her goal in life to free the girl from her mother's grasp by taking her mother to court for child abuse.
This book is definitely something that those interested in psychology would enjoy. It's very much like a personalisation of a case file, showing how the disorder manifests itself from the youth of the mother up through the adulthood of the daughter. For those entering the mental health industry and even those going into the medical field, this book offers a wealth of information about the disorder in a very accessible format.

Lots of trees but little forest.......2003-08-09
This book suffers from dry prose, lack of focus and the inability of the author to leave anything out! It is just a poor read, sad to say.....
An unreadable, poorly focused study.......2002-09-07
Washington's Partisan War is an unreadable, poorly focused study of the militia in the northern states during the Revolution. The author violates a cardinal rule of writing-he does not know quite what to leave OUT. Instead Washington's Partisan War tells of almost every militia muster, movement, skirmish, disbanding, etc. until one is totally lost in a (poorly written) forest of minute details. Context is significantly lacking here, and Kwansy fails to adequately tie in all of his facts to make useful conclusions. While Washington's Partisan War may be useful to some studying specific aspects of the middle states duringthe conflict, this book should be avoided by the general reader for the reasons above, as well as its terrible prose.
a wonderful focused work on Washington's use of the militia........1997-10-30
I think this book was very enlightening about the role of the militia and how Washington creatively used them along with regular military during the Revolutionary War. Being a New Jersey native, I was appreciative of the author's feel for the area. I gained a new appreciation for Washington as a military strategist. Definitely worth reading!
A civil war within the Revolution.......1997-10-23
The book not only points up Washington's genius at extending the tenets of the formal warfare of the 18th century, something for which he is rarely credited, but records the civil war between Tory and Patriot (Whig) within that war. It clearly demonstates the strengths and limitations of depending upon the citizen soldier, a lesson relevant today. Since the book deals primarily with the war around the New York metropolitan area, it will be especially interesting to anyone living in the area. I think enough of the book to buy a new copy and give it to our local library. John Higgins

Book Description
CALIFORNIA POLITICS AND GOVERNMENT is a brief "nuts and bolts" book with contemporary examples that offer students a real life view of politics while illustrating the complex principles at work in California Government. In addition to introducing California?s complex political system to students, major issues as economics, education, and immigration are discussed as along with their impact on California politics. Coverage of interests groups, campaigns and state/federal relations is particularly notable. Furthermore, the text integrates public policy coverage throughout the text, instead of consigning it to individual chapters?making connections and focusing students on the real impacts and practical effects of legislation and other government activities on their lives.

Great response.......2007-04-04
I was very pleased with my purchase of California Politics & Govt. The book was in great shape and was just like new. The shipping time was wonderful.
What a mess.......2004-10-03
This book will never stand on its own. It attempts to introduce far too many ideas in too few pages. It's a lot like Cliffnotes. Used alone, the reader will be left with a skeleton of concepts and ideas...
The book is a muddied introduction to the organization, history, and sociology of the state. Ideas are dumped, not explained. Half of the names appear in only one sentence. It left me unable to remember or care about some of the 50+ names. Sections are seldom coherent.
I ended up using the TOC to draw up my own organized outline. I filled in the pertinent details using wikipedia and ca.gov. And I paid attention to the newspaper. It worked much better.
Practical and Enjoyable.......2002-05-07
I've got the latest, sixth edition of this book, and I am very impressed. Relevant, well-organized, and very-well written, this book is a firt-rate primer for those interested in California politics. The book is written in the style I appreciate the most: to the point and matter-of-fact, without needless theorizing and editorializing.
This is not an ordinary textbook. It is not boring or pedantic. Gerston and Christensen present a fascinating panorama of California politics. The book has ten chapters, each of which contains valuable insights and interesting details. The authors completely succeeded in presenting factual information, including tables and graphs, in a way that does not overwhelm the reader or make him want to skip over these things. This masterful integration of factual information into the flow of the narrative makes the book truly enjoyable.
I have a Ph.D. in Political Science; and I rely on information from this book when I get ready to lecture on California politics in my American Government and Politics course in the college I teach. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get acquainted with California politics. And even advanced students of the subject, will find the up-to-date information in this book a valuable tool for understanding California's politics and society. Pick up this awesome resource today.
