Rooms to Inspire: Decorating With America's Best Designers
ASIN: 2843233690 |
Book Description
Photographer Dominique Nabokov has documented the living rooms of well-known Parisians - artists, writers, designers, intellectuals, and the occasional celebrity. The rooms vary widely from one another in terms of formality and decor, but they are all equalized under the gaze of Nabokov's camera. Each room is shot simply as it happened to appear on that particular day, without any people. Using discontinued Polaroid Colorgraph type 691 film, (which provides a full-color transparency in four minutes), Nabokov does not use special lighting, or allow the rooms to be rearranged or touched by a stylist. The result is a series of fascinatingly deadpan photos that puts an ironic slant on the celebrity interior genre. These peeks into the living rooms of celebrated Parisians will provide hours of voyeuristic pleasure. The book includes more than seventy living rooms of such diverse Parisians as Jean-Paul Goude, Andree Putman, Christian Liaigre, Ingrid Caven, Jeanne Moreau, Victoire de Castellane, Loulou de la Falaise, and Jacques Grange, to name a few.
Customer Reviews:
Original coverage, second in series.......2003-02-27
This book is an original. Ms. Nabokov uses special film (purposely chosen, from a lot of film no longer available) to document various creative people's living rooms--people who are rich and some who are not so rich. She did a similar book called "New York Living Rooms." The rooms have no people in them, and Ms. Nabokov prefers owners would do no touch up of their spaces, when notified that she will be photographying their living rooms. The people covered are jazz players, designers, literary people--many names one would recognize. There is a subtlety to her technique. When I saw "NY Living Rooms," I snatched it up, and could not wait for "Paris Living Rooms." I was not disappointed. Going through the book puts me in a reverie of sorts. Some rooms are natural and show they are not the work of design "experts," whereas others are worthy of design magazines. The common element is that the personality of the owner shows through, even without the person being present. The combination of high end and low end makes for interesting viewing, and also makes me feel a bit like a voyeur, looking into someone's living room, unobserved. I will buy any future volumes by Ms. Nabokov.
limited appeal.......2002-12-18
When you found this book, I hope you were not expecting beautiful photos of French Country or Classic styles of interior design. Instead, this book is the equivalent of a bad art house movie. It has out-of-focus pictures of grungy looking rooms taken at unflattering camera angles in bad lighting.
If you are someone who likes to polish up "diamonds in the rough," you may like this book. Because I think only people that can look at junk and find some intrinsic value in it will like this book. However, those people will probably like the book titled Big City Junk better.

Handy Alan Moore Reference Book.......2002-02-21
Well written and a lot of fun! Features a nice intro about Moore; nice overviews of his work; and a pretty mean bibliography with details of the contents. Very surprised that this little book would be so informative. Not bad at all.

Try one of Merril's other books instead.......2007-06-19
Merrill Markoe is a very funny author - but I do not recommend this book. It's like "Merrill Light" very watered down and never fills you up. Try one of her other books instead - or find this at your local library.
good stuff.......2000-04-30
I did not actually read this book, but listened to it in audio-book format during a drive to D.C. I enjoyed it so much, I listened to it again soon after. Markoe delivers laugh-out-loud commentary while still being smart, articulate and witty. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates the finer (annoying) things in life. Markoe narrates the audio-book, which gives you an even better feel for Markoe's personality.
A laugh out loud, brilliant commentary........1997-12-01
Merrill Markoe shows why she was chosen to be the head writer for Late Night with David Letterman in this irreverant and often laugh out loud collection of satirical essays. Brilliant in its commentary on life in the 90's, How to Be Hap-Hap-Happy Like Me takes a refreshing look at the seemingly mundane experiences that all of us share. The book is tightly woven, easy to read and completely hilarious.

Good Resource.......2002-03-11
This book is one of the few resources available to western readers on pre-war and WW II era Japanese films, Japans greatest era of cinema according to Noel Burch (author; To the Distant Observer). Unfortunately the text is also clotted with a particularly repugnant variety of paternalistic American leftism.

If you like great Achitecture and outstanding engineering.........2001-04-24
Middleton has spoiled us with quality books, and "Manhattan Gateway" is no exception.
This book contains a well-balanced selection of how and why this beautiful structure came to life, as well as the incredible engineering that made Penn Station possible.
I am not a New Yorker or an American at all.. I live in Rome, Italy and the similarities with the baths of Diocletian and Caracalla is daunting.
Middleton focuses on technical as well as architectural details and I strongly recommend this book to whoever is interested in either subject.
Also noteworthy are the captions of how the Hell's Gate Bridge was constructed and how the "new" Pennsylvania Station will look like, returning this New York terminal to some of the architectural magnificence intended by the great architects Mc Kim, Meade and White (designers of the original station).
If you like New York, especially for what was lost menially in this great city.. you will love this book.

Rainmaker's Handbook -- worth getting if you're in business.......2004-08-11
Comprehensive, well-organised guide for creating better results in a business -- not just professional services. I enjoyed his clear writing style and the easy-to-follow layout. A good read that stands out in a crowded field.
Get Your Umbrella.......2004-06-16
Mills' book is part text, part workbook and all value.
If you ever thought you could benefit from the services of marketing consultant, stop and read this book first.
MIlls' 8 R's model for Client Relationship Marketing is a thoughtful and systematic approach that can be applied by individual consultants or service firms as a whole. The model is practical, proven and easy to apply. You just add the effort.
The book is well laid out, with plenty of practical tools you can put to use immediately. This book won't stay on your shelf for long. It'll be on your desk ready for repeated use.

The Rainmaker's Toolkit holds the answer!.......2004-04-30
I read this book hoping to pick up a few practical tips on how to win more profitable clients. As a result, The Rainmaker's Toolkit far exceeded my expectations. Within it is a revolutionary seven step marketing system on how to build a successful and profitable business. I then passed the name of the book onto several of my colleagues whom then went out, bought a copy and found it to be equally impressive. I highly recommend this for anyone wishing to find a road-map that outlines how to create profitable growth. I highly recommend this book! Harry Mills is a superb writer.
professional service firm tool.......2004-04-07
Professional service firms are notoriously poor at marketing. The odd dynamics of partnerships as a business model coupled with the idiosyncracies of individuals within them make marketing hardwork. How do you get all partners to buy-in? What strategies do you use to make everyone an effective contributor? Harry Mills latest book cuts straight to the chase. Straight forward practical procedures. We are using them and they are working. As the principal of a mid-sized responsible for marketing I highly recommend this book to other lawyers and professional service firms.
An Excellent Book for the Service Provider.......2004-03-12
If you provide a service, this is a must-read --- especially if you don't have a lot of background in how to develop your business and how to get and keep the best clients.
It is, however, not just for people new to this sort of thing. It is an excellent manual for those who have been in business a long time.
Some of the material may be old hat. But there are gems in the book which make it worth the price and worth your time. It is written in a similar vain of Harry Beckworth books, which are very popular.
The book is a fast-read and well laid out.
Highly recommended.

Book Description
Jerry Bailey has been called "the Michael Jordan of racing." One of the greatest jockeys ever to break from the starting gate, Bailey has won every major race-and then won it again. He's set earnings and stakes records and entered the Hall of Fame. In the sport of kings, Jerry Bailey is the king of jockeys. But first, he had to beat his own personal demons.
Against the Odds vividly chronicles Bailey's years of drinking, cruelty, anger, and despair, the moment of truth when he decided he wanted to live again-and his astonishing rise to the top. As thrilling as the stretch drive, it's a fiercely candid autobiography of professional racing's greatest jockey and his most exhilarating victory of all-against himself.
Customer Reviews:
AAA Review.......2007-09-06
Book is mainly about his personal battle with alcohol and his resulting "wondeful" family life.
Would like to have seen more racing industry insights and information!
A true champion.......2006-08-09
Bailey tells the story of his sometimes rocky rise through the ranks of the jockey colony to become the premier rider in the world. He doesn't hold back any in discussing his battle with alcoholism and how it nearly ruined him and his family. It's an honest self appraisal by a man with an enormous talent for his craft, yet glaring weaknesses that almost denied racing fans the opportunity to watch his genius at work.
I'd congratulate Jerry.................2006-07-22
....but he does so much of it himself. I've always admired Bailey for his professionalism as a jockey and applaud his having overcome addiction, but was put off by his repeated blowing of his own bugle, so to speak. I cringed at times. It might have been better left to a biographer, with quotes from Bailey relative to his recovery from alcoholism.
On another front, I do think that Jerry Bailey does a nice job as a television commentator.
P.S. Still not buying the excuse for his Belmont tactics with Eddington.
JOCKEYS ARE SUPERB ATHLETES!.......2006-07-11
I gained a brand new respect for the jockey profession after reading Bailey's book. They are superb athletes and deserve every bit of the money they earn. That being said, I also lost a lot of respect for the horse racing industry after reading this and another top jockey's biography. The use/abuse of the thoroughbred & quarter horses as a means to an end to line the human pocketbook with riches is really undefendable. The book makes clear that these amazing equine athletes are given the very best of care right up until they drop dead on the track from ruptured lungs or shattered cannon bones. Sorry, my concience was pricked & my heart broken in the course of reading this and Gary Steven's biography, and not for the owners, trainers, handicappers, or even so much the jockeys, but for the horses. You will also get your eyes opened as to how self-serving these people are and how ruthlessly they behave toward one another. If this is the "Sport of Kings" I'm glad to be a commoner.
A brutally honest autobiography.......2005-11-02
Now that Breeders' Cup 2005 is in the books, 48-year-old jockey Jerry Bailey can claim 15 Breeders' Cup wins, which are the most ever for a single rider. Yet he has been talking very seriously about retiring, possibly within a few weeks.
So far, Bailey has come through this very dangerous business with relatively 'minor' injuries (broken jaw, broken collarbone, smashed ribs, etc.) He has also won over $22 million in purse money, has won every big American race there is to win, not to mention four editions of the Dubai World Cup Classic. He is in the Hall of Fame and is widely recognized as the greatest jockey of the last two decades. It is a joy to watch him ride. He is one of the few jockeys that I can recognize in a race by his classy, quiet, straight-backed crouch, the tip of his boots barely connecting to his stirrups, his horse positioned exactly where it has to be in order to win. And win he does---an incredible 25% of his races.
Maybe it 'is' time to get out while he can still walk, can still enjoy life.
Now that I've read "Against the Odds," I have to worry about what this thinking-man's jockey is going to do with himself after he retires. Much of his autobiography is about his fight against alcoholism. He can count the years and days since his last drink. But what is going to happen when he no longer needs his extraordinary reflexes and his ability to guide a thousand pounds of thundering horse past, around, and sometimes through its hard-galloping rivals? What happens when the euphoria of winning is replaced by a less adrenaline-soaked lifestyle?
I wanted to read "Against the Odds" as a celebration, and instead I ended up worrying about the author's future. This book is about Jerry and his struggle against alcoholism, his struggle to keep his marriage together, his struggle to conceive children. Only about a third of the text concerns his brilliance on the race track.
I was expecting a slightly different story--something a bit more prettified, with more about the great horses that he has guided into the winner's circle.
Cigar is the only Thoroughbred Jerry admits to falling in love with, and what a ride they had together! He was aboard for 15 of the 16 races that tied Cigar with Citation for the greatest number of consecutive wins.
I'll only read Jerry's brutally honest story once, but I'll never forget it.
Book Description
The First Amendment puts it this way: "Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press." Yet, in 1960, a city official in Montgomery, Alabama, sued The New York Times for libel -- and was awarded $500,000 by a local jury -- because the paper had published an ad critical of Montgomery's brutal response to civil rights protests. The centuries of legal precedent behind the Sullivan case and the U.S. Supreme Court's historic reversal of the original verdict are expertly chronicled in this gripping and wonderfully readable book by the Pulitzer Prize -- winning legal journalist Anthony Lewis. It is our best account yet of a case that redefined what newspapers -- and ordinary citizens -- can print or say.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic book.......2007-02-08
I thought it would be a boring book. Surprise! It is very well written, and it brings tons of historical facts about freedom of speech and of the press in a context of story telling.
An accessible, left-leaning overview of first-amendment law.......2005-03-26
A very familiar, weak joke among my friends is to preface even the most self-apparent advice with the phrase "I am not a lawyer." For example, "I'm not a lawyer, but I'd advise against punching your neighbor in the face." "I'm not a lawyer, but I'd recommend renting The Incredibles instead of Friday the 13th Part 27."
The amazing thing about Anthony Lewis's Make No Law is that it renders that cliched phrase unnecessary. I truly am not a lawyer, but it didn't seem to make a bit of difference while reading this book; I found it a very accessible and readable overview of the history of the first amendment.
Admittedly, that description may not make this sound like a page-turner, but it actually is. In the way that a good teacher can make any subject seem interesting, Anthony Lewis breathes life into even the dullest moments of constitutional history. And when the situations he's describing are truly dramatic (as with the courtroom showdown in the Sullivan case, around which most of this book is structured), Make No Law creates the suspense and intrigue of a great fictional thriller.
It's worth mentioning that Lewis doesn't seem to strive for strict objectivity. In his observations, he frequently advocates for a liberal interpretation of freedom of the press, praising the Supreme Court justices who advanced his views and criticizing as small-minded those who did not. I personally thought that these sections gave depth and context to the facts of the Sullivan case, but those looking for an unbiased journalistic text might look elsewhere.
That minor concern aside, Make No Law is almost perfect as a text for the layperson who wants to understand how one part of the American legal system ticks.
Another necessary free speech book.......2005-01-30
There is little to add to the other reviews. Lewis writes well, on a important enough subject. He idealizes the court's creation of, and support for, free speech doctrine. The importance of the Sullivan case is the crux of the book. Justic Goldberg summed up the result: "A public official from recovering damages for a defamatory falsehood relating to his official conduct unless he proves that the statement was made with 'actual malice'--that is, with knowledge that it was false or with reckless disregard of whether it was false or not." It was, according to Lewis, a victory for free speech and important component in the development of free speech doctrine.
The book is a good read for those interested in free speech issues, the history of which are supremely important in understanding the nature and danger of threats to freedom.
Why press freedom matters..........2003-10-14
A readable account of the libel case that dramatically defined and expanded the scope of press freedom. It's difficult to remember that it was only in the 1960's that these ideas were settled by the Supreme Court. Lewis backgrounds the history of press freedom, or rather government attempts to bridle it by various sedition acts that seemed to appear each generation [Ashcroft's current attempts to inhibit 1st Amendment rights is only the latest in a long series] The last chapters of the book cover libel cases through 1991 when the book went to press. The short section on the Pentagon Papers case is particularly timely.

An important book for media, civil rights, and legal history.......2003-07-01
As with Gideon's Trumpet, Anthony Lewis (long time New York times columnist who went to Harvard Law so that he could better report on the Supreme Court) manages to explain a complex legal decision, set the decision against its historical background, explain the legal history of the Court's reasoning, and give cogent examples of how the case has been applied--all in a very readable book.
In the early 60's, the struggle for racial justice in the south had reached the boiling point. Bull Connor was using his dogs and hoses against non-violent blacks marching in the streets, and Alabama expelled several university students for sitting in at a restaurant. Martin Luther King had been arrested for tax fraud by the State of Alabama--claiming that SCLC funds had been diverted for his personal use (all charges were eventually dropped). The media was covering these events nationally (and increasingly internationally).
To raise some money, some southern ministers placed an ad in the New York Times, describing some of these events, and asking for money to defend Dr. King against the false charges.
A member of the Birmingham City Council, in a well orchestrated attempt to shut down northern media coverage, sued the New York Times for lible, and won a $500,000 verdict in state court.
These events set the stage for the now famous decision by the United States Supreme Court in New York Times v. Sullivan.
While the decision was unanimous (at least in the result), Lewis digs deeper, and describes the process by which the judges meshed often incompatible views into a coherent rule of law, which continues to be applied today (although, not always as the Court intended).
The intended and unintended consequences which flowed from Sullivan form the third strand of Lewis' book, and are in themselves instructive, but probably not as interesting (they are often both obscure and dated) as those parts of the book (most of it) which focus on the history.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in today's media, the history of the contitution, how the Supreme Court works, or the history of the Civil Rights movement.
