5 out of 5 stars Learn from those who make a living taking incredible pictures.......2007-03-08

A great deal of information packed into a small package. These are the people who give you the incredible National Geographic images explaining how they do it. From equipment, to brief explanations of the masters like Cartier-Bresson, they set forth their approaches to portraits, lighting, street photography, action, environmental and groups. Well worth the price and several reads. The equipment sections have lightened my load and my back is greatful. Remember, these people are often traveling alone, carrying all their gear, yet producing those memorable images. You might want to see the National Geographic Photographers dvd and watch them in action.

          1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2006-11-10

I really don't know what I was expecting. Maybe the "National Geographic" tag pulled me in. The only thing I got out of this book was to attempt to admire the photographs used as examples. Even then, they weren't that good. But what do I know. Make sure you know what you want before you spend your change on this.

          3 out of 5 stars It's Ok.......2006-09-20

Maybe I read too many of their photography how-to books, but I don't find this book that useful. Basically, if you read their "Secrets to Making Great Pictures" book, this is a repeat of that book and half the size. It's short, but it kinda wasted like a day or two of my life - the time it took me to finish the book.

          4 out of 5 stars Good ref.......2003-03-04

Organization is well above average but it's not a textbook so the index is still not as strong as a textbook.
But, it is a how-to book and chapters are to the point, clearly written. It's sitting with my other reference books, now that I've read it. Very handy ref. book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Overview of Photography with Very Motivating Pictures.......2002-10-15

This book describes what you need to know to make good pictures of people. The book begins by discussing composition and then turns to equipment and lighting. The book then focuses on various types of people photography: street photography; people in action; portraits; familar subjects (family members) and the photographic essay. The book includes a list of useful web sites and explains how three professional photograhers work. They are Cary Wolinsky, Sisse Brimberg and Lynn Johnson. I love these different viewpoints because they provide food for thought.
The photographs leap off the page. They are stunning and make me want to get out and photograph. I highly recommend this book. It also is of a size that will easily fit in your camera bag.

5 out of 5 stars Seen the TV series? Now read the book!.......2005-02-16

If you loved the wacky Irish TV series of three odd-ball priests banished to a God-forsaken island, then you will love the book of the scripts, too.

The scripts themselves are not exactly what went to air. They were the final rewrite, but there were often small (or large) changes when it was actually filmed. There are lots of scenes not televised, lots of the authors' footnotes, funny insights and comments. You will pick up on bits that you missed watching the show. A great read!

              Book Description

Watching any film happens within a cultural context. Cinema and Sentiment critically examines the practice of watching movies in western culture. Clive Marsh demonstrates aspects of the religious function of filmwatching by comparing watching movies to worshiping. Through a variety of case studies on the habit of going to the theater Marsh's study shows how watching films as a regular practice can contribute to the shaping of human living.Engaging with social and religious behavior patters in western culture Cinema and Sentiment suggests a need to recover a positive sense of sentiment both in theology and film. Two concluding chapters locate the text in recent studies of theology and film offering church leaders students of theology and film studies and all those with an interest in contemporary culture practical consequences of the work's findings.

                Book Description

In July of 1884, pianist Calixa Lavallee performed a recital of works by American composers that began a highly influential series of such concerts. Over the course of the next decade, hundreds of all-American concerts were performed in the United States and Europe, a movement that fostered both the development and the perception of American music as a unique art form. A Tidal Wave of Encouragement-the title of which is derived from one observer's description of the movement-is the first in-depth study of this significant period in American music. Providing a comprehensive history of the Concerts as well as detailed accounts of the intense critical debate surrounding them, author E. Douglas Bomberger reveals how one decade shaped the future of American classical music and very much impacted the way we hear it today. The movement, crucial in focusing discussion on American music and providing performance opportunities for composers and musicians for whom no such opportunities had before existed, was far more extensive and widespread than most scholarship had credited it. This oversight is due in large part to the dearth of objective studies of the Concerts; previous considerations have tended either toward the merely nostalgic or toward the unnecessarily disparaging. Bomberger's work is a corrective to this, as well as much-needed historical and critical account of a project whose influence had yet to be fully acknowledged.

"This book is one of the best you can get for all those basic children's (and teens and adults) games you know you know how to play, you just need to get the reminders. Hey, you might even find a few you didn't know you didn't know. We certainly did and we think we are pretty good at knowing lots of games (and we are humble, too) for lots of ages. Book Description

How employee ownership can pay bottom-line benefits. Today, more than 25 percent of American workers own stock in their employers. You can shop at employee-owned supermarkets such as Publix, buy Gore-Tex fabric from employee-owned W.L. Gore & Associates, and sip coffee served by employee owners at Starbucks. Now Corey Rosen, John Case, and Martin Staubus present convincing evidence that employee ownership can be much more than just a good benefit program. Done right, it can be the foundation for a new—and more effective—model of management. Drawing on first-hand studies of dozens of companies from large corporations to local retailers, the authors show that the “equity model” enables firms to grow faster and more profitably than conventionally run competitors. Vivid examples of both winning and failed attempts at employee ownership reveal the key concepts that make the model successful, and suggest how managers can adapt these strategies for use in their own companies. This lively and practical guide delivers a sound business case for making employees true partners in a firm’s success.

5 out of 5 stars A "how to" on employee ownership.......2006-08-23

If you are looking to implement an employee ownership program, via ESOP, stock options, phantom stock, etc., this is a good guide. Along with "A stake in the game" by Jack Stack (stressing more the cultural aspect of it) and "In the company of owners" by Blasi, Kruse and Berstein (less statistics, more dated, but a very good story), it will guide you on how to go about it and all the reasons to do it. Recomended by the Beyster Institute, an authority on employee ownership.

5 out of 5 stars Packed with strong examples.......2005-09-05

Thousands of companies are partly or wholly owned by their employees, but how do they compare to the usual firms, and are their organizations really more productive? An employee ownership expert, business book writer and consultant team up to answer this question, examining the different types of innovations such companies are taking. Dozens of companies are studied and provided as examples in Corey Rosen, John Case, and Martin Staubus's Equity: Why Employee Ownership Is Good For Business. Packed with strong examples.

5 out of 5 stars EQUITY BOOK REVIEW.......2005-07-23

A new book, Equity: Why Employee Ownership Is Good For Business (Harvard Business Press, 2005) shows that when employees have an ownership stake, the attitude of their company changes-and so does its bottom line. The authors, Corey Rosen, John Case and Martin Staubus, labored long and hard on telling the captivating and motivating story of the evolution of employee ownership and how the equity model can be used to bring companies to new levels of profitability. They reveal what to do as well as how to lead and manage the process. They substantiate and document their well-balanced points and counterpoints. They have produced a spellbinding primer on how America progressed to where it is today with employee ownership, and spell out clearly, succinctly and eloquently, where to go from here.

                    5 out of 5 stars A feel good book........2005-07-21

The book is a quick read and represents a small sample of the universe of ESOP company success stories available. I look forward to the 2nd and 3rd editions!!

5 out of 5 stars Stories Make It Work.......2005-05-04

Rosen, Case and Staubus have authored one of the most readable books I have encountered on employee ownership and the difference it can make for employees and companies, irrespective of industry or geography. This book is filled with very personal stories, as well as compelling dreams that have been realized through the collaboration of owners at all levels of an organization. The authors provide rich evidence in the post-Enron era that hope is very alive for business models that invite all employees into the opportunities for success. After reading the book I had a list of several businesses I wanted to visit just to see how they've done it. Definitely an inspiring book!

                    Book Description

In this first view of China adoption from a child's perspective, eight-year-old Ying Ying Fry returns to her orphanage to remember what it is like and to write a story so that other adopted children will understand where they came from. Kids Like Me in China combines real-life photos with the forthright observations and complex feelings of an adopted child as she meets caregivers and befriends children in the city where her life began. This book will inspire all adopted children to take charge of their own life stories.

Eight-year-old Ying Ying Fry is a Chinese American girl growing up in San Francisco. But her story didn't begin there. Like lots of kids she knows, Ying Ying spent her first months in China--in a birth family she cannot remember and an orphanage in Changsha, Hunan province, where her American parents adopted her when she was a tiny baby.

When Ying Ying goes back to visit Changsha, she can't wait to see her orphanage caregiver--someone who knew her and loved her when she lived in China. Meeting Li Ayi is just the beginning, as Ying Ying discovers points of connection with all the orphanage children--babies, toddlers and school-age kids. Outside the orphanage she visits children at home, at playgrounds and at school, and these friendships too help her see her life story in a new light. A child of two countries, Ying Ying is determined to claim both as her own.

Kids Like Me in China combines real-life photos with the forthright observations and complex feelings of an adopted child as she ponders what her early life might have been like. The first view of China adoption from a child's perspective, Kids Like Me will inspire all adopted children to take charge of their own life stories.

I bought this book for my Chinese adopted daughter. She is only one right now, so I'm saving it for when she's older. I read the book and it is really well written, and definitely written from a kids point of view, which is why I like it so much. Lots and lots of colorful pictures in the book, and it also addresses the topic of abandonment in a very careful way.

5 out of 5 stars An informative and touching resource for our children.......2004-12-05

This book gives us an inside look at an orphanage in Hunan Province and a young girl's homeland trip. It is full of big, color photographs from inside an orphanage, which is such a rare treat. Our 2 1/2 yr-old loves this book and loves all the pictures of the babies and the nannies. When it comes time to talk with our daughter about other issues surrounding her adoption, this book will be a valuable resource. In Ying Ying's own voice we hear about the one-child policy, infant abandonment and adoption.

"Kids Like Me in China" is a great book for children adopted from China and their siblings, cousins and friends. It can help adoptive parents bring up topics that may be difficult for us. It is a must-have!

By accident, i found this site! I am Chinese and my English teachers (They are a couple)were from the US. They also adopted a girl named Evie Xuezhi Braun from Changsha just the same city as Ying Ying.I was really moved by their adoptive actions when I heard they had no kids and wanna adopt a Chinese orphan. I can still remember the time they saw me off when I started for Shanghai to work there after my graduation.Evie was also there with her American Parents. I really wanna recommand this book to them. It sounds helpful to them and Evie. But we are all in China. I can't get the book~but I will tell them the name of this great book!! Thanks for your Americans' kindness!!! Many Thanks!!!

                        Book Description

One of the lasting legacies of World War 2 was the proliferation of what today are known as Special Forces. At the time many soldiers, often of high rank regarded these units as nothing short of ill-disciplined cowboys or worse! However desperate times called for desperate measures and there were those in high places who were prepared to take risks. As specially recruited units such as the LRDG, SAS and SBS earned their spurs and scored significant victories, at high cost both to the enemy and themselves, so faith in the concept grew.

Philip Warner's book takes a highly informed look at the broad spectrum of secret forces, of all sides, describing their origins and training, the key personalities and their actions and achievements.

Bestselling author William J. Bennett says he was inspired by displays of patriotism after the September 11 terrorist attacks, but he was also struck by how "some were quick to find us to blame." He worries that this "countermovement of America-bashing" will make the United States lose its resolve: "What I fear is the erosion of moral clarity, and the spread of indifference and confusion, as a thousand voices discourse with energy and zeal on the questionable nature, if not the outright illegitimacy, of our methods or our cause." Bennett cites dozens of examples of professors who decry U.S. foreign policy and pundits who object to so much flag flying. While recognizing that these are minority views, he concludes that Osama bin Laden caught Americans with their defenses down--not just physical and military defenses, but also moral and intellectual ones. "Many of us have forgotten what we once knew about our freedoms and our decencies, and we have forgotten why, time and time again, we have had to rally ourselves to the point of ultimate sacrifice to defend them," writes Bennett, who also appraises Islam and defends Israel on these pages. Why We Fight is short and quickly read--and worthwhile for anybody who wants to be reminded of first principles during the war on terrorism. --John Miller

                        Book Description

Bill Bennett makes a case for our moral duty in the world and why the anti-war left, right and center are wrong.

For too long we have allowed the PC view of the world to control our thoughts, making some of the most absurd positions the accepted "truth". William Bennett here lays it all out in a succinct and clear fashion, helping bring us back to reality, and showing us why we must maintain and promote moral clarity in the face of sworn enemies.
We cannot assume that all nations and peoples will act benevolently towards us when we do so towards them; that is the utopian wishful thinking of the 60's which history clearly debunks. We also cannot lose sight of the fact that Islam is not just a religion but also a political system whose major tenet is that of converting the world to its religion, and submitting it to its political control. That, above all else, has been behind Muslim agression for 1300 years, and the "excuse of the week" (Israel, our presence in the Gulf, etc.) is only used as a means of continuing the Jihad duty to which all Muslims are sworn and to convince ignorant Westerners of the justness of their "struggle".
Read this book and bring yourself back to reality.

5 out of 5 stars Well done, clear message.......2006-09-09

The media dwells on American actions, with their armchair quarterbarck view. We face difficult decisions but the existential threat is real - and the need to face those threats is clear.

1 out of 5 stars Very, very sad.......2006-06-01

Bennett's own logic undermines itself. He is in essence arguing that to be a truly patriotic American, one must check your brains in at the door and unquestioningly accept everything our government tells us. Welcome to the machine.

Our country was founded on the premise that individuals should have the capability to think for themselves and critique those in power. It's time that we rediscovered that to appropriately confront those in power is true American patriotism.

I was reading a debate between Noam Chomsky and William Bennet on their new books, so I decided to buy them both. I won't review Mr. Chomsky's book here, but Mr. Bennet's book is terrible. I thought it was bad enough to actually write a review so other people do not buy this book. The message is basically, if you love your country, agree and support what your government does.

1 out of 5 stars What the hell is wrong with Americans?.......2006-03-23

I am a British citizen. I have just read this book and it left me stunned. I can only conclude that the author is barking mad and the positive reviews of this book are written by people who were educated in DisneyLand.

If this book made you "feel good" for being a patriotic, right-wing, conservative American then all I can say is: Use the internet to LEARN stuff instead of looking at porn sites.

                            Book Description

This durable journal is a must for birders of all skill levels, from novices just beginning to build a life list to veterans looking for the most up-to-date, systematic, and visually complete way to document sightings of even the rarest, most elusive birds. Based on the latest classifications by the American Ornithologists' Union and organized by family, its comprehensive, easy-to-use checklist itemizes every species recorded in North America, including accidental visitors—more than 960 in all, each identified both by common and Latin names and illustrated with specially commissioned paintings by the finest bird artists at work today.

The Birder's Journal features a user-friendly page layout that directly mirrors the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America for quick access to information. It provides a consistent, familiar format for recording the place, date, and time a bird was spotted, along with additional space for notes and comments, sketches, and other important details. And with each new entry, it becomes ever more valuable and personal—both as a chronicle of birding accomplishments and as a memento of the observations and occasions that make birding so deeply satisfying.

A first-rate journal is an essential addition to any birder's bookshelf, and this is the best available anywhere. It's also a perfect gift, especially when paired with the latest edition of the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America.

5 out of 5 stars Good Bird Note Book.......2002-04-15

As a black and white companion to the National Geographic bird book it is great. This note book gives you room to write and draw on the species of birds. One can use this book as a "life list" and record your sightings, locations, etc., into this. It is amazing to sit down with this book years later and review your past findings. This book goes along exactly with the bird book and I usually keep both with me at all times for recording and identifying.........

5 out of 5 stars An excellent gift for any North American birdwatcher.......2002-01-09

Now available in an updated and expanded second edition, Mel Baughman's The Birder's Journal is a consumable volume for the personal use and notations of North American birdwatchers. Though it has very basic information on over 60 North American bird families, the bulk of this thick compendium consists of accurate, detailed black-and-white sketches of over 850 bird species, next to allotted writing space where the birdwatcher can make his or her own notes about when, how, and where that species of bird was successfully observed. The Birder's Journal is a perfect aid to keep track of the all the different feathered friends one has seen, and an excellent gift selection for any North American birdwatcher.

                            2 out of 5 stars NGS Field Guide - A Disappointment.......2001-12-08

This journal is a gray-scale (black and white) version of the popular and very useful NGS field guide. Nothing new is added except blank lines for brief field notes - which replace the descriptive text adjacent to the colored illustration as found in the field guide. Most - but not all - of the birds currently listed by the AOU are represented.

However, as a "fully illustrated" journal in which to record one's first sightings, it functions only marginally better than the check-boxes in a field guide index - again, by providing something more than a margin in which to record notes.

                            ...

Also compare the Audubon Society's entry into the field. This pretty journal, in the style of a diary, would serve quite appropriately as a gift for a young woman or teenage girl just beginning the birding experience. Very few of the 1000+ birds in the AOU Checklist for our region are represented, however.

Each of these journals serves the purpose of providing space for keeping track of the birds one has identified in the field, but each will appeal to a select audience. The NGS Birder's Journal doesn't go beyond the basic requirement of providing space.

Life-List Illustrated and the Audubon Journal bring a desirable esthetic element to the process.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Life List for a Birder.......2000-04-29

I have used this book for years. It has become my life list. As I see the birds, I color in the line drawings and fill in the details of the sighting. I highly recommend this journal

3 out of 5 stars Interested but not professional.......2000-02-22

I slowly became interested in birds through some of my travels and wanted to keep some kind of record of what I was seeing. I'm not a member of a formal birding organization which has more defined and focused goals for recording bird sightings. I found this book to be more than I really wanted. I have the NG Field Guide to North American Birds (which I love and have given as gifts to friends), and the Birder's Journal is a black-and-white copy with lines where the description would be in the Field Guide. For simple noting of sightings, the Field Guide itself is sufficient. There is space in the margin beside the bird's description and a checkbox by the name in the index which lets you keep a list as well. However, if you need space to keep copious notes, this book gives that space. I would have liked something more easily transportable with a spiral binding for ease of writing.
