        Book Description

In Western Europe and North America the idea that war can deliberately be used as an `instrument of policy' has become unfashionable, not least because of the carnage of two World Wars and the Americans' humiliating experience in Vietnam. But wars are still fought. Those who start wars clearly believe they are worthwhile. Why? In this original and provocative study, Brian Bond discusses the successes and failures of military and political leaders in their pursuit of victory over the last two centuries. Professor Bond argues that in order to be counted victorious, a leader has to progress beyond military triumph to preserve the political control needed to secure an advantageous and enduring peace settlement. Napoleon was a brilliant general, but failed as a statesman. Bismarck, on the other hand, was a success in skilfully exploiting Moltke's victories on the battlefield to create a unified Germany. In the First World War, Germany and her allies were defeated but at such great cost that confidence in the idea that war could be controlled, and the pursuit of victory made rational, received a terrible shock. Germany and Japan exploited their military opportunites between 1939 and 1942, but lack of political control and moderation brought them catastrophic defeat. After 1945, nuclear weapons and the increased complexity of international relations blurred the identity of `victors' and `losers' and seemed to make the idea of a `decisive' victory almost unthinkable. But this study warns against the assumption that war as an instrument of policy has now been completely discarded. The Falklands and Gulf conflicts show that aggressors are still prepared to risk war for tangible goals, and that their opponents are quite capable of responding successfully to such challenges.

            Book Description

A good case can be made for Isaac Newton being the finest mind humanity has yet produced. His theory of gravity offered his contemporaries their first glimpse of how the universe actually works, and his mathematics enabled later generations to walk on the moon. Today, we know that gravity keeps our feet on the ground, but how many of us know how Newton's greatest discovery really works? In Newton & Gravity, Paul Strathern encapsulates several of Newton's more mind-expanding discoveries, explaining in lively prose their cultural context as well as Newton's early obsession with science (bordering on dementia) that made his revolutionary vision possible. Just a few of the big ideas covered here are:

Newton's discovery of calculus at age twenty-three Why gravity, one of the greatest human insights of all time, was in fact a hunch and how it actually works Why it took Newton twenty years after his discovery to reveal to the world the secret of gravity and planetary motion

Ideal for the intelligent reader eager to better understand how and why the universe works the way it does, Newton & Gravity is a fascinating refresher course that makes physics not only fun but shockingly easy to understand.

            5 out of 5 stars I Love the Book.......2001-12-15

This book told me several significant points about Issac that I (and most other people) are not aware of. It also inspired me to learn more. It requires a small amount of time to read. For me that is an advantage.

This is a great book for people that avoid fat books which are padded with trivial details that can't be remembered anyway.

1 out of 5 stars A quick read, but shallow.......1999-08-18

Strathern's summary of the life of Issac Newton is less than 90 pages of unusually large print -- a very quick read indeed. At best, it is a superficial glance that provides little insight into the life or work of Newton.

In many ways, the book is a contradiction. Strathern's approach is more suited to a children's book, but his writing style is intended for an educated adult. For me, the result was fast-paced boredom.

            Book Description

Tracing an awe-inspiring oceanic route from Boston, around Cape Horn, to the California coast, Two Years Before the Mast is both a riveting story of adventure and the most eloquent, insightful account we have of life at sea in the early nineteenth century. Richard Henry Dana is only nineteen when he abandons the patrician world of Boston and Harvard for an arduous voyage among real sailors, amid genuine danger. The result is an astonishing read, replete with vivid descriptions of storms, whales, and the ship's mad captain, terrible hardship and magical beauty, and fascinating historical detail, including an intriguing portrait of California before the gold rush. As D. H. Lawrence proclaimed, "Dana's small book is a very great book."

Two Years Before the Mast was praised by Ralph Waldo Emerson as: "a voice from the forecastle. Though a narrative of literal, prosaic truth, it possesses something of the romantic charm of Robinson Crusoe. Few more interesting chapters of the literature of the sea have ever fallen under our notice."

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A classic worth the effort.......2007-10-10

A book even a landlubber like me could love! Before the Mast is a name most of us have heard. I just assumed it was a novel until I read it on suggestion of one of the guides at Mystic Seaport during a recent visit. Dana was a brave 19 year old fellow to sign up voluntarily as a common sailor living before the mast on a hazardous trip from Boston to California around The Cape near Antartica. His account of the trip is justifiably enduring for many reasons including the description of pre gold rush unpopulated California still under Spanish rule. There's even a Cpt. Bligh-like character to be feared. Speed read the parts describing all the sails unless that's your thing!

5 out of 5 stars The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-09-16

This is another book that I read aloud to my wife as we set about on our own adventure of "Hobo-ing America" in our little Chevy van.
I was thrilled by the fact that they brought their hides from California to the little tanning and leather processing community of Lowell, Massachusetts. I was raised in Lawrence - just down the road.
I picked up this book because it was a travel adventure about sailing around the world. I didn't know at the time that it was a Classic and that it had changed the life and working conditions for seaman at that time. My dad was also a seamen - at a much later date though. He served as a merchant marine during WWII. My wife and I were harboring the fantasy that after we finished our tour of the USA we might then sail "around the world".
            We didn't.
This was a truly great adventure story and it is a true account - not a dramatized rendition. It was dramatic enough as fact. I loved it.
Mr. Dana being the son of a wealthy business man brought a truly conservative approach to the viewing of a sailors life.
William Z. Foster who also gives an account of life aboard commercial wind sailed vessels presents a much harsher view in his book "Pages from a Worker's Life". His account written several decades later also questions the exaggerated conservative notion that "improvements" were actually sustained or made in earnest for the sailors.

5 out of 5 stars The most exciting book ever!.......2007-03-07

If you like adventure and thrill, then Two Years Before the Mast is the book for you. Some parts of this book we will have you sitting on the edge of your seat.

In Two Years Before the Mast Richard Henry Dana went on a ship that was going around the tip of South Americia. From storms in the Atlantic to icebergs in the Pacifac. They were going to California to trade. It was very hard on the sailors.

This book is mostly about adventure an hardships. Richard Henry Dana went on this boat because his eyes hurt because he was reading too much. He took a break but he did not know what lie ahead of him.

I would highly recommend this book because it is very exciting and thrilling. I would recommend thi book to readers that love excitement.

            5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for the Nautical Library.......2007-02-13

Two Years Before the Mast is a genuine classic -- a must-read for anyone interested in ships and the sea and in American maritime history.

4 out of 5 stars A great tale - if you can get through the nautical lingo........2006-09-03

This book is a great tale of both adventure and daily life both on land and sea, if you can make it through the sections full of nautical lingo. For example: "We were going along with studding-sails set on both sides, when, as we came round the point, we had to haul our wind, and took in the lee studding-sails. As the brig came more upon the wind, she felt it more, and we doused the sky-sails, but kept the weather studding-sails on her, bracing the yards forward so that the swinging-boom nearly touched the sprit-sail yard." (page 75).

The book has many pages full of such very detailed description, which I eventually just skimmed, or skipped, with no loss of enjoyment of the rest of the narrative. If the reader can find their own way to navigate the sailing terminology, the rest of the book is fascinating. The author describes daily life on a sailing ship in that age as a mixture of wonderful and horrible experiences. Likewise, he describes, in fascinating detail, what life was like in coastal villages like San Diego and San Francisco when they were just hamlets with a few houses and a church.

Reading this book will give you appreciation for what early settlers and mariners had to endure, and will probably make you appreciate little things like toilets, clean water, dry and warm clothing, and decent food a whole lot more that before you read it. The adventure of "doubling" the Cape Horn crossing is, simply, incredable and it is worth reading the book for this alone.

                                Book Description

Britain is an island nation and throughout history its navy has been of great importance for its defence. As a consequence it has always had a special significance and has over the centuries entrenched itself in the national psyche, making itself manifest not only through the hero-worship of its principal characters such as Horatio Nelson and Sir Francis Drake but also finding expression through art, music, and literature. Like any great national institution, the navy is a complex web of interconnected histories - operational, strategic, political, economic, administrative, technological, and social. Now updated for its paperback edition, The Oxford Illustrated History of the Royal Navy, in a series of fourteen chapters, provides a thorough and engaging treatment of these histories, covering every aspect of naval history from the Anglo-Saxon period to the dawn of the new millennium. The book explores: Major action and campaigns - the defeat of the Spanish Armada, the Anglo-Dutch Wars, the Battle of Trafalgar, the Battle of Jutland, the Atlantic Campaign of 1939-45, the Falklands conflict, the Gulf War, and attacks on terrorist bases in Afghanistan in 2001. Developments in naval history and technology - navigational advances, surveying, constructional developments, disaster relief, the suppression of the slave trade, and the Strategic Defence Review of 1998. Key personalities - Drake and Nelson, Samuel Pepys, Francis Beaufort, Jackie Fisher, Lord Charles Beresford, Lord Jellicoe. Naval life - recruitment (press gangs, training, education, discipline), tactics, gunnery and armaments, amphibious operations, wages and conditions, victualling and supply. How and when did Britain's perception of the sea change from a thing of fear to a 'moat defence' (in the words of Shakespeare)? How did the navy's administrative systems develop during the Tudor period? During the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, its greatest period of expansion, how did the navy develop strategically and operationally? How successfully did the navy defend the British Empire during the nineteenth century? What role did the navy play in Victorian Britain's thirst for exploring of the world? What technical developments have been important to the navy? What effect did two world wars have on the role of the Royal Navy? What does the modern navy look like now and what about the future? With a full chronology, which has been brought up to date to the end of 2001, an extensive list of further reading, 16 pages of colour plates, 23 maps, 6 special Action Station diagram 'box' features, and around 200 black-and-white integrated illustrations, this is an authoritative and highly readable account of a unique fighting service and its people.

                                    Book Description

Includes essays by Nobel Laureate Dr. Norman E. Borlaug and other noted scientists and scholars
The modern environmental movement began with the publication of three seminal works, Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, Paul Ehrlich's The Population Bomb, and the Club of Rome's The Limits to Growth. These books' dismal visions of a poisoned, over-populated, resource-depleted world spiraling down toward environmental collapse are today's conventional wisdom. And every year we hear about new "conclusive" reports from special interest groups claiming that our atmosphere's temperatures are soaring, our air and water are more polluted, our cities are more crowded, and our global food supply is more precarious than ever before. However, according to a number of leading scientists from around the world, members of the environmental movement are guilty of twisting—sometimes manufacturing—the facts in an effort to frighten people into joining their cause.
In this eye-opening book, some of the most respected researchers in the country explode the myths behind much of the doom and gloom of today's environmental movement. You will discover how the hysteria about global warming, overpopulation, mass extinctions, imminent famines, biotechnology, energy shortages, and more are grounded not in reason but in false science and a fear of progress. When placed beside the overwhelming facts, some of the most pervasive eco-myths crumble, including:
                                    Myth:
Antarctica is melting due to global warming—threatening to raise ocean levels
                                    Fact:
Antarctica has been cooling—and its glaciers thickening—for the past 30 years
                                    Myth:
The global population is growing faster than our ability to produce food
                                    Fact:
Global fertility rates are falling dramatically, and with advanced technology, farmers are producing more food using fewer resources than ever before
                                    Myth:
Solar- and wind-powered generators are a renewable, efficient, and less intrusive alternative to gas-, oil-, and coal-burning generators
                                    Fact:
Global fossil fuel supplies are in no near-term danger of being depleted, and a single 555-megawatt natural gas power plant produces more electricity than 13,000 windmills
                                    Myth:
Modern pesticides and fertilizers are increasing the rates of cancer in humans
                                    Fact:
No study has ever shown that anyone has developed cancer from the legal application of pesticides, and environmental pollution accounts for at most 2 percent of all cancer cases versus 30 percent caused by tobacco use
                                    And many more
Ultimately, this book shows that uniting much of the environmental movement is an agenda that is not so much anti-pollution as it is anti-human. Global Warming and Other Eco-Myths lays out the true state of the planet, which, as you'll discover, is more healthy, vibrant, and clean than ideologically motivated environmentalists want you to believe.

5 out of 5 stars Great source of facts to understand global warming issue.......2007-07-22

This is an esssential book to uncover the facts behind the validity of the Global warming concerns and possible impact of humans on this possible effect. It is an essential if you care about the facts.

This is not a book for those who embrace the religion of Secular Humanism, as they will not want to encounter any facts that might conflict with their pre-determined religious beliefs.

If you want your concerns and sacrifices to be aligned with any sort of fact and reality, you must read this to round out your education, and off-set the distortions of a media that have decided, with no scientific knowledge, that this religion is true and must be defended against all facts.

Read it and decide for yourself, if you can think independently.

The book's editor, Ronald Bailey, came out on Sept 22, 2006 in ReasonOnline to explain that the global warming conclusions in his own book are false. According to Mr. Bailey:

"In 2002 came Global Warming and Other Eco-Myths (Prima Publishing). The global warming contributor was University of Alabama at Huntsville climatologist John Christy.... In August 2005, Science magazine published [findings] that Christy and Spencer had failed to take proper account of satellite drift, which produced a spurious cooling trend to their dataset....

"On the day that the studies were released I wrote a column for Reason in which I declared that my skepticism of man-made global warming was at an end."

Rather than debunking eco-myths, this book perpetuates them. Ouch.

Since I cannot respond to all the reviewers pretending to be "climatologists" or engineers using the same tired intimidation techniques of anyone who questions global warming is a shill for the oil co.s or desperate and trasparent arguments from authority, I will respond here.

Shell and BP (rechristened "Beyond Petroleum") are among the biggest contributors to global warming activism! It gives them an edge over unrepentent companies like Exxon for one! Environmentalism is now a huge industry itself, $4 biliion a year in the US and $8 billion yearly world wide. Moreover this industrial Gorilla is not beholden to things that "evil corporations" are, like accountability and tranparency.

Stating that: "Fact: Antarctica has been cooling - and its glaciers thickening - for the past 30 years" is so totally ridiculous that I won't even waste my time to go into details of this sudo-scientific work of fiction.
