Very nice!.......2007-01-06
This is a good, basic handbook, with generally good advice.
I was initially prejudiced against this book when I read their extremely negative take on homebirth, which is biased, outdated and unreasonable. Our baby was born at home with a midwife, and I know from experience that homebirth is far, far superior to hospital birth in terms of safety, emotional comfort and medical supervision of mother and baby. Midwives are extremely skilled individuals who are constantly monitoring both mom and baby, rather than running between ten patients. There are far fewer risky medical interventions and midwives consistently have lower c-section rates and rates of other interventions. Knowing what many friends of ours have gone through in "modern" hospitals with rude and uncaring medical staff, having to deal with strangers and pressure from staff toward unnecessary intervention, I would never have a birth any other way, and I found the authors' take on homebirth (that it's risky and supervised by unskilled and untrained individuals) absolutely insulting, and I was hesitant about taking the advice of the rest of the book.
After that heated spiel, however, I should add that the book did seem pretty good aside from that - just a wee bit too conservative and leaning towards "we've always done it that way, and that was good enough for us!" I am a fervently evangelical Christian, like the authors, but that is no reason not to embrace new ideas such as homebirth and other more recent options.
One thing I LOVED about this book is its pro-life stance. Having read many prenatal care books, I am absolutely revolted by the pro-choice stance of many of them - "If you want it and it's healthy, it's a baby and here's how to take care of it. If you don't want it or it's not perfect, ditch it in a biowaste can - it's only fetal tissue anyway!" I really appreciated the positive stance of this book toward all unborn babies, something that is quite rare.
This book also seems to be quite well-researched and put together by a great team of people. I would say that it is generally trust-worthy and free from fringe-type advice.
I would recommend this book with reservations - read it, but read others also. Or do what we did - get it and keep it as a reference guide.

The ImPerfect Spy is the inside story of George Trofimoff, an American civil servant and army reserve colonel, convicted in 2001 of spying for the Soviet Union throughout the Cold War. It is a story of betrayal, greed, and treachery at an almost incomprehensible level. It begins with Trofimoff's early years as a Russian refuge living in pre-World War II Germany, and continues throughout the remarkable series of coincidences that converged to give him a new life and made him an American citizen. It follows Trofimoff's life as he advanced in the American intelligence community through positions of increasing responsibility, and his unlikely recruitment by a Russian Orthodox Priest, Trofimoff's step-brother, as a spy for the Soviet Union. It ends with his arrest, trial, and conviction for espionage. The Imperfect Spy is a remarkably complete look at the life of a spy, told from both Trofimoff's point-of-view and from the trial record. The author's unique access to Trofimoff's wife's comments, Trofimoff's writings, and from the author's personal observation over a five year period, combine to create a remarkably intimate look at a very public event.

The incredible biography of the life of one of the Soviet Unions greatest spies during the Cold War.......2006-04-05
The Imperfect Spy: The Inside Story Of A Convicted Spy by Andy J. Byers is the incredible biography of the life of one of the Soviet Unions greatest spies during the Cold War. Having suffered through refugee camps at a young age, George Trofimoff miraculously made his way to America. As his citizenship progressed, so did his position the in American intelligence community, giving him ideal placement for an eventual career in espionage for the Soviet Union. Very strongly recommended reading for its highly intriguing content and perfectly twisting plot, The Imperfect Spy is the perfect addition to all Cold War Studies collections for historians, students, and non-specialist general readers with an interest in espionage and the Cold War conflict.
Spying and Punishment.......2006-03-09
This is a true story simply told, but behind the plain narration there's psychological thriller in the Dostoevskian mode. A handsome, narcissic youth, a scion of the old Russian aristocracy, survives the tumult of WW II and goes on to serve in a US Army Intelligence unit. Well-respected professionally, and a hit with the ladies--he runs through no fewer than five wives--he settles in Florida in tranquil retirement. Then comes the fall: he is unmasked as a long-term spy for the Soviets. The reader is left with the realization that he could have avoided arrest by a few simple precautions--as if he had connived in his his own downfall. The account of the FBI investigation and trial are gripping.

Book Description
In this volume, Georges Duby examines the lives of prominent twelfth-century French women as well as popular female literary figures of that time. Focusing on medieval notions of women and love, Duby looks for the ideological motivations for the representation of the female sex. He analyzes the ways in which women's biographies were written and how female characters were treated in fable and legend, pointing to the social and political forces at work in these representations.
The historical personages include Eleanor of Aquitaine whose several marriages brought her wealth and autonomy; the virtuous Héloïse; and the visionary recluse Juette. Duby also studies the literary figures of St. Marie-Madeleine, a composite figure who personified the essential female traits of frailty, ardent love, and evangelicalism; Iseut, literary beloved of Tristan; and two other emblematic figures, Dorée d'Amour and Phénix—women who became ladies through chivalrous love.
Provocative, informative, and entertaining, this book offers new insight on courtly love and the representations of women under medieval patriarchy.

Duby and the quest for women.......2000-04-11
Eleanor of Aquitane and six others is the first book of a trilogy on women by Georges Duby. It is an interesting approach to the writer who, not many years ago named the Middle Ages "the age of men". Duby brings some light into a still obscure part of medieval history which is the condition of women. The essays are well written and easily understood by all readers, specialized or not. He focuses on the image created of women, and that's the main problem with the text. By insisting on images of women he fails to bring into light the reality of women's lives to emphasize the representation of women and not women themselves.

What the "Bell Curve" won't tell you!.......1997-11-21
This book discusses what the book "The Bell Curve" won't tell you because it ruins their hypothesis. Dr. Diamond is a world famous neuroanatomist who pioneered the impact of an enriched environment on the brain at all stages of life. The book is fairly technical but the message is clear.
Book Description
The first Autobiography of Emperor Haile Sellassie is detailed with information on the little giant of a man who many peoples from all of life consider to be the returned Christ, the Messiah, or Defender of the Faith. Indeed, a remarkable and outstanding world leader. Got to read it. First time ever in paperback.

A Beautiful Story about a Beautiful Man and Nation.......2005-05-16
This is a book that should be read and studied by all believers in God. It should also be studied by people who are interested in a career in political science or people who eventually want to become a prime minister. And, it should be read by national leaders who still believe that Plato's 'philosopher king' can lead the people of a democratic nation. As President Putin of Russia continues to say correctly that there are many different forms of democracy that will work properly.
This book showed me that Germany's Hitler and Italy's Mussolini were very ugly and inhumane. It also shows that religions can be ungodly when they force a religion onto free people. It shows the origin of today's terrorism.
Emperor Haile Sellassie I was a great developer of the human spirit and Nature's resources. Everything he did was for the benefit of the people of Ethiopia and those nations that joined the League of Nations. His work to unify science and theology was new and should become a 'development' model for all nations today.
It is an inspirationl and legendary for the New Generation........1999-07-24
The whole work of the book is very inspirational, historically it is educational and legendary. The new generations of Ethiopian or the Eritrean will learn from it what they have not been told correctly. History never chnages. The book has it all. It is compiled very well, charismatic and the writer is to be admired for his great work. Everyone must read this book for self uplifting or for your edification.
Book Description
The publication of Whiskey, Six-Guns and Red-Light Ladies in 1994 introduced readers to the ribald 1870s diary of frontier saloon keeper, George Hand. More than a decade earlier, George Hand kept another spirited journal, this one recording his service with the Union Army. Marching from California through Arizona, West Texas and southern New Mexico, Sergeant Hand and the other volunteers of the California Column protected the southwest from further invasions by the Texas Rebels. Their hardships and adventures are recorded in Hand's salty journal; heat, dust, thirst and cold; ethnic tensions, frontier whiskey, and Apache depredations; bad food and disease; and imperious officers whom enlisted man Hand does not hesitate to cuss.
George Hand also hunted ducks and quail in a pristine Southwest, pulled huge catfish from the Rio Grande, and rescued a damsel in distress. The Civil War in Apacheland provides an intimate view of a little-known theater of the Civil War, and is the first-hand chronicle of an army that contributed mightily to the American settlement of the Southwest.

Primary historical source of Civil War, El Paso and Mesilla.......1996-09-21
This is the edited journal of a Yankee soldier in El Paso,
Texas and Mesilla, New Mexico during the Civil War.
George Hand was literate and this gives the perspective
of an enlisted man. This talks of southern sympathizers
living in El Paso (Franklin) and across the Rio Grande
in Mexico. Good read if you like Primary Source material
on the Civil War in the West. Same author as "Whiskey,
Six-Guns, and Red Light Ladies." The latter book is
Hand's life in Tucson, AZ 1875-1878
Book Description
This book provides the most insightful and comprehensive examination of China's strategy and implementation of its economic reform. When history is written China's remarkable transformation may prove to be the 21st century's most compelling theme. The author, Jianlian Wu, is the principle reason why anyone interested in the world ecomomy or global financial developments must read or be aware of this book. Professor Wu alone possesses an authority regarding these developments because of the influential role he has and will continue to play in China's economic reform. Seldom are such books written with this level of authority. We have a story of which we all must be aware being written by one its most important architects. It is as if we had access to Alexander Hamilton when he helped form AmericaÂ's economic system.
Customer Reviews:
This is a `must know' for every China watcher.......2006-10-09
Jinglian Wu's book on `Understanding and interpreting Chinese Economic Reform' is a must-read for everyone who is involved in and with China. I found it one of the most complete works dealing with economic reform in China. On the other hand, I must warn you this can be very dry reading. Wu in his foreword says that the book was predominantly written for his students and very often it does read like a University textbook.
Wu starts off with recounting the economic systems of the Soviet Union and the former eastern bloc countries and why these centrally planned economies did not work as intended. The author does much the same for China before he sets off explaining the evolvement of China's reform strategy.
Part Two to me is the most interesting bit of the book because Wu deals with the reform process in all important aspects of the economy including the rural, state-owned enterprises, the private (non-state), the banking and securities sectors, fiscal and taxation systems and foreign direct investment. But apart from recounting what has been happening so far, the author also gives some good ideas where reform should go next.
Part Three deals with social issues arising in the course of reform including how best to establish a viable social security system and the role of the Central Government in a market economy. On the latter, Wu is quite clear that a working market economy must be based on the Rule of Law, transparency and a political system best based on democracy. There are also some concluding remarks on the author's findings.
At the end of the book there is a postscript by the translator citing some interesting statistical data on the publication of Chinese books overseas and the other way round. I generally agree with the translator on his findings and his interpretation. The only thing to be done about this imbalance is to have more books published on the subject matter. China is indeed far too important to be misunderstood. Jinglian Wu's book is an excellent step forward towards better understanding China's economy.

Customer Reviews:
Backyard Birding.......2007-01-12
excellent for the backyard birder. It offers really useful ideas for attracting birds and keeping them coming to your yard.
Great guide.......2006-07-24
I was sent this then-new book seven or eight years ago to review for my newspaper column on birds, and found it to be an excellent guide, not only on how to build boxes for all sorts of cavity-nesting birds, but also how to deal with problems like predators and pests. I built one of the boxes; it went together well and has served quite a few feathered families over the past five or six years.
Great book! Lots of info on nestboxes.........2006-03-27
I was interested in putting up some birdhouses (nestboxes) in my backyard and trying to attract some of the more exotic birds, etc... I checked out about a dozen books form the library.. Well, this one hands down was the best...
Book starts out by going over the birds you would want to attract to your nestboxes, with pictures and bios on all the birds, such as bluebirds, chickadees, titmouses, etc.... Then it goes into the nestboxes, pro and cons of certain nestboxes.. and tells you how to alter each nestbox to attract the birds at the beginning of the book (mainly you just drill a size hole)....
While watching birds in my backyard or building a nestbox, I have consulted this book over and over.. It's a great book, and I have no idea why the other reviewer gave it such a bad review..
Horrid.......2004-05-17
This book was terrible. I couldn't believe how bad it was. It was very out of date and made no sense. The directions are very hard to follow and it doesn't give nearly enough details. This didn't work for me at all. My birdhouses kept falling apart!!! I would highly suggest another book to replace this one, or better yet, you can have mine because I won't be using it!
