Book Description
Water is the inspiration for the River of Words contest, an annual challenge that highlights the art and poetry created by children from all over the world.
River of Words: Images and Poetry in Praise of Water offers a powerful selection of the finest work from the contest's first six years. With selections by children from places as diverse as Azerbaijan and the U.S., China and Ivory Coast, as well as Thailand and the Ukraine, it is colorful and passionate evidence of fertile minds creating fertile visions of the world. From the hearts and minds of children come expressions of pure joy and exultation, as well as sorrow and longing, all inspired by water.
River of Words is proof that children have the capacity to be intelligent, articulate, caring, creative, humorous, inventive and most of all, passionate. For many adults, busy in their day to day lives, how could we not feel a pang of envy for those heady times, when, as children, the natural world was what it has always been, a wonderful place full of discovery.

Beautiful.........2005-02-06
I love this book, it is sitting on my coffee table right now. I've read this book atleast 5 times in the past couple months, most photography books I read once then never touch them again for quite a long time.. This book is amazing though.
I highly suggest purchasing it if you enjoy wildlife photography and reading about the photos. All the storys are short but very entertaining and the photos are of top notch quality.
Highly recommended for nature and photography collections.......2004-11-12
Wildlife is a truly gorgeous showcase of wildlife photography from expert professionals. Still images are presented in full-color, along with a brief sidebar written by the photographer detailing the story behind the photograph in question. A wide variety of species are presented in all their glory, from a magnificent tiger in mid-leap to a penguin chick huddled for protection underneath its dutiful parent. Highly recommended for nature and photography collections alike, and simply beautiful to page through.
Not a Complete Meal.......2003-08-18
This is a collection of the work of 40 of the world's most famous wildlife photographers. Names like Iwago, Lanting, Mangelsen, Morris and Wolfe will be quite familiar to people interested in this genre.
Each artist gets four pages for some biographical data and several pictures. Every one of the photos is world class.
While the biographies are generally too short to provide much insight into the individual artists, one can discern a couple of trends in their lives. A good many started life in some other career and after a while decided to make the risky jump to professional wildlife photography. Others were interested in nature all of their life and the photography grew out of this love. No one started life as a commercial or fashion photographer and then made the switch to wildlife. Occasionally a photographer will offer a surprising statement about the commercial nature of wildlife photography, like the photographer who notes that the books he has published don't make financial sense, but do help to drum up other business.
As I've perused a number of wildlife photography books over the years, I've noticed that a good book is like a good piece of music. As you proceed through it, you notice both the repetition and the variation of elements so that by the end of the book you have not just looked at pictures, but also come to understand something about the photographer and the way he relates to the animals he photographs. This book is more like a CD my son owns, called "50 Great Classical Hits" (or something like that). The CD plays just the most dramatic points from a number of symphonies. While that can be interesting, it certainly doesn't provide the same experience as listening to a single full symphony.
This book has the same effect. Many of the pictures are obviously well composed and striking but when one turns the page the picture one just looked at disappears from the mind as the reader tries to come to grips with a completely different subject and style. Ultimately I found this beautiful book unsatisfying.
But, it does serve the very useful purpose of introducing you to wildlife photographers you may not have yet encountered. I, for one, will be keeping my eyes open for the work of Chris Packham and Konrad Wothe. Reading it may also lead you to look for the work of unfamiliar artists.
Grand images.......2003-04-09
The images are brilliantly printed with stunning details. I even liked the format whereby the equipment used were listed together with the image.
Excellent book for inspiration.
a brillant book!.......2003-01-08
This is my favorite book of the year. The photos are really beautiful! I gave this as a Christmas gift to several of my friends who are into photography. In addition to the fabulous photos there is useful practical information for up and coming photographers.

Useful Starting Point.......2004-01-21
The author categorizes dramatizations, mostly in movies, by the degree to which they resemble liberal imagery, conservative imagery, or images between those stereotypes. Dr. Lenz labels liberal those films or shows that depict or endorse due process ideals, rehabilitation, indeterminate sentencing, judicial review, legal autonomy, or professional administration of criminal justice. Movies or television programs that prefer crime control ideals, punishment, determinate sentences, legislative control, populist sovereignty, or political administration of justice Professor Lenz labels conservative. Those loosely defined "poles" form a Liberal-Conservative Non-Continuum, which leaves room for other images that the author presumes to be intermediate.
The author then associates these archetypes and the intermediate category with historical eras. Accordingly, he finds that liberal images are associated with films of the 1930s and around 1960. Conservative images, by contrast, have been more prominent since the 1970s; while the transitional 1960s and early 1970s, accompanied by waning regard for liberal views and waxing support for conservatism, shaped admixtures of liberal and conservative imagery. Lenz speculates that a new transitional state may be in the offing as criticisms of current criminal justice conservatism mount.
Lenz detects themes in cinematic or televised productions by closely assessing the plotlines that he then interprets consistent with his categorization of images and periodization of productions. Some of his descriptions of movie plots are quite lengthy, such as his treatment of such classics as "12 Angry Men" or "To Kill a Mockingbird," so this monograph may launch some college or high school papers. The narratives are generally accurate and reasonably representative of main story lines and include some peripheral but meaningful scenes and characters. Long or short, his sketches of films and television programs, such as "Dragnet" and "Law & Order," usually yield messages that Lenz then fits to liberal or conservative themes.
Of course, this book's approach has some problems. First, most dramatizations emphasize one or more themes but feature opposing perspectives implicitly. Any feature film will likely project images from one pole, from the other pole, and points in between. Of course some facets of criminal justice need little or no emphasis to be accessible to mass moviegoers, so the presence of this theme or the dearth of that theme need not betoken much in any instance. The import of any asserted theme, it follows, is problematic.
Lenz is sometimes interpretive and sometimes impressionistic, an approach that generates insights but tempts both the author and his readers to overlook opposing premises, baseline norms, and clashing values that make many movies rich and interesting. Readers thus will find in this monograph a wealth of ideas but should not use it for confirmation or authority.
Third, the author's themes often require that he hammer films until they fit. For example, Lenz has obvious reasons to assert that the multiple "Dirty Harry" movies denigrate liberal legalism and liberal politics. Beyond the obvious, however, each of the motion pictures featuring Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) also reinforces liberal politics and images inconsistent with either of Lenz's ideological "poles." Inspector Callahan's partners in the first three films of the series are Hispanic (in "Dirty Harry"), African-American (in "Magnum Force"), or female (in "The Enforcer" after Callahan's Italian American male partner is stabbed), and each projects the mettle of a member of a previously under-represented group in law enforcement. This strikes me as a liberal message that might induce some in the audience to believe that desegregation-even (in "the Enforcer") affirmative action-might result in an influx of courage and competency into the police ranks that tend, across the series, to be led by craven incompetents. Harry Callahan attacks newfangled notions and resists "progress," but he also learns the error of some of his ways even as he reasserts at great muzzle velocity and caliber the superiority of his cowboy ways. Moreover, judges and administrators (in the Lenz liberal column) and elected officials and their handlers (who likely align on the conservative pole) frequently appear loathsome when they are not inept, which could easily foster selective confirmation of expectations by a viewer/interpreter.
The selection of motion pictures and television programs should trouble any reader familiar with movies of a given era. Given the volume of movies that are produced, a number that have some focus on criminal justice must be neglected, of course, in a short book. Many readers will never have heard of "Adam's Rib" (1949) and will be unaware of its multiple liberal and conservative themes regarding criminal justice that are embedded in the comedic battle of the sexes between Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn.
For the reasons above, this book serves to generate insights and ideas but does not provide comprehensive coverage or much depth.

Also helps for GC version.......2005-07-15
I first rented RS3 on GC but then bought it on PS2 and also picked up this guide. It provides so-so strategies, but on door assaults the writer needed to be reminded your squad is not invinsible! I think the writer played the game on veteran (normal) difficulty not hero (hard) so some of the tactics aren't right. It's weapons detail sucks at the beginning of the mission they just suggest the M16, you can't use that inside, just alcatraz. On Island Estate they tell you to use the silenced MP5, which is a great weapon but not fit for that situation. Your sole teamate uses the TMP which is a silenced machine pistol, a piece of crap. I suggest you use the M60E4 or M249, which are Light Machine Guns that mawl anyone at close range. All in all a horrible guide for a good game. As I said in my title it also helps for GC version who's campaign is the same in PS2

Customer Reviews:
Concise.......2003-03-18
I've been on both sides of reorganizations, and this book does HELP. It was especially very good advice when I was younger and just beginning to experience the change that all organizations must go through. I held on to my copy and still look at it now and then to remind myself that I shouldn't fight change, but take it as it comes and make the most of it.
Pragmatic Reality.......2003-01-31
I am an employee who appreciates reality. This book espouses the importance of personal accountability...for how we work, how we live, how we feel.
The challenge is in doing something right that does not come naturally; proactive rather than reactive. This book made me feel good about how much control I actually do have.
Following the axioms presented will help you step over some tripwires in the minefield of a work-a-day world in the throes of change.
Senior managers will love it, but employees will hate it.......2001-03-25
The tone and messages of the book are such that they will serve to demotivate, rather than inspire, employees. For example:
Message #1: You (the reader) are not senior management. Throughout the book, senior management is described as "the people at the top" and "they." The book immediately sets up a distinction between these two groups - top management, which is moving the company along in response to outside changes, and employees, who are resisting change at every turn.
Message #2: Change is scary, unrelenting, and you (the average person) are naturally not going to like it. And if you weren't scared about change going into the book, you will be after you read it. One of the opening paragraphs reads: "And if today's stress and tension aren't enough to create problems, all a person has to do is consider what the future holds. One close look at what's in store should be enough to worry anyone."
Message #3: You (the reader) are an idiot, and you will persistently resist change unless you wise up to the tips in this book. The book outlines 15 mistakes people usually make in dealing with change. It doesn't offer 15 good ideas for preventing stress due to change, but instead focuses on 15 things you'll probably do wrong unless, of course, you read this book.
On the whole, this book is too simplistic and supplies only minimal rationale for why an employee should change. If you want to get employees to be more open to change, to put their heart into their job, to be more supportive of the company's overall direction, then give them a book that will inspire them. Give them tips for how to be a happier person, both on the job and at home. Talk to them in a positive tone and not a negative one, as this book does. There are many books out there that can accomplish these goals, just not this one.

wonderland revisited.......2007-07-31
This book was my first introdction to the Castenada books. Abelar is one of 16 female members of carlos' clan. Her journey from insecure artist to competant "sorceress" was fascinating and informative. It was easy to get lost in the world of her magic apprenticeship. Great reading!
Good Book.......2007-07-01
Good book. Talks about the recap as per her experience and an interesting read. Was part of my interests for sometime. Highly recommended.
Sorcery from a woman's perspective.......2007-06-22
For anyone who has followed the legendary exploits of Carlos Castaneda, whether you judge them to be fact or fiction, the personal account of Taisha Ablelar's induction into Castaneda's realm is an experience not to be missed. If anything, her accounts offer the reader a level of clarity and easy understanding of Castaneda's concepts that surpass even her infamous mentor.
However, in the interest of providing a modicum of balance, the reader may also want to peruse another work by one of her longtime comrades-in-arms. I speak here of "Sorcerer's Apprentice," author, well-known writer Amy Wallace, daughter of the late best selling novelist Irving Wallace. While this work offers little corroboration of either Castaneda's or Abelar's claimed experiences in the realm of sorcery, since the time of the events she describes is well after the period when their relationships with don Juan were alleged to have occurred, it does provide a troubling look inside Castaneda's, Abelar's and Wallace's final years together, a picture of descent into sexual addiction and possibly madness, leaving one to wonder if Castaneda's entire circle may have been just one cup of cool-aid short of a Jonestown.
On a personal note, many have asked me why I put any stock whatsoever in the tall tales of Castaneda and his associates, Abelar included. A story from my own autobiography, "The Vortex" may shed some light. A year before Castaneda published his first book I had an experience that would remain a mystery until Castaneda published "Power of Silence" twenty years later.
For a brief time, in my youth, I became a practicing Muslim, meticulously performing the complex prayer ritual five times a day. Then one night, sitting in my car, frustrated and complaining at not being able to find the address of my next sales appointment, something inside me snapped. It was as if some part of me had disconnected from my body and assumed control, lecturing me about my lack of discipline. A profound calm settled over me, rendering me simultaneously detached and engaged. For two days my sales figures soared. It was as if no one could say no to me. On the evening of the second day I decided to put my new state of being to the acid test by visiting my parents. Their response was cordial beyond anything I had ever experienced from them, and convinced me that I was now living in an altered reality. But by the following morning I had returned to "normal." So distracting had this event been that I had completely forgotten to perform my Muslim prayers, and in fact, never did so again.
Twenty years later, in a chapter of "Power of Silence" entitled "Place of No Pity" Castaneda describes a very similar experience. In the aftermath of the event don Juan explains that humans are like televisions stuck on a channel called "self-preoccupation," lacking the energy to tune into any of the vast array of other channels available to us. To change channels, he explains, we first need to accumulate energy, by practicing rituals that are deliberate, precise and repetitious. Do this long enough and eventually we experience a shift to a channel where self-importance and self pity are no longer possible. Once this happens we connect with the force that controls the entire universe, a force called "intent," and everything can be bent to our will and even more channels can be opened, assuming we remember to keep practicing the rituals that save our energy.
This one realization alone was enough to inspire me to dedicate my autobiography "To Carlos, with gratitude."
Maxwell Austin van Lack, Author of The Vortex: A True Story of Passion and Karma
Something different.......2007-06-13
Breathtaking! A journey into, or maybe I should say OUT of this world! We all need to consider Taisha Abelar's story as reality, because who are we to say/judge what is real and what's not?
Astonishing statements, I was only able to read a chapter at the time, to be able to actually absorb and understand the assertions.
Absorb the message, avoid writing like the messenger.......2006-09-16
Abelar's generous sharing of secret shamanism/sorcery knowledge and her tutelage from the tradition of Yaqui Indian brujo Don Juan was insightful and in many ways, useful for self-healing, whatever one's path. For instance, there is great value in the recapitulation, visualization and breathing exercises; regardless if you are a man or woman, the exercises help clean the psychic aura, move negative energy, and assist in grounding after emotional trauma.
The book itself was unskillfully written; Abelar breaks many literary rules: she tells the reader information without letting us decipher it from the narrative and adverbs are used "impulsively" throughout the book.
On a literary level, this book is a good example of how not to write; it was difficult to finish, but the overall message of the book resonated with me and it helped me see some of my own fatal writing flaws.

Marauder: Memoir of a B-26 Pilot in Europe in World War II
ASIN: 0595000487 |
Book Description
The Flying Prostitute was one of many pseudonyms given the B-26 Martin Marauder bomber in WWII by those who flew them.
This plane cremated so many crewmen that newscasters were afraid to write or talk about it for fear it would cause a morale problem with the men charged to fly them. With the high number of men being killed in horrible crashes crewmen wore their Air Force Wings as bracelets on their wrists so their bodies could be identified, “just in case.” Combat in the skies over Europe followed, and so did the crashes. Pilots did not know the mammoth tail could, and had separated from this airplane while in flight. Pilots knew that they risked being cremated with their crew in a disastrous, fiery crash. What they did not know is that the manufacturers of parts of this airplane were falsifying reports and Congress knew it.
The Flying Prostitute is the dramatic, true story is shocking in its detail and documentation. The refusal to write about this airplane remains an enigma for writers even to this day. The author recites his cadet life at Randolph Field, San Antonio, Texas, The West Point of the Air, where he became the top-ranking cadet officer. He then earned his wings at Ellington Field, Texas where he along with others of his class, was assigned to be an Instructor Pilot of this aircraft for seventeen months.

A Dissenting Voice on the B-26.......2002-01-03
First, I salute Mr. Hunter's active role as a WWII vet, and a part of "The Greatest Generation". I am happy that he has had the opportunity to record and share his memoir. With that said, I find his assessment of the B-26 and its history to be at odds with the large body of work published on the Marauder by historians as well as the men who flew them in combat. The airplane was indeed surrounded by more than its fair share of controversy. In addition to reading the half dozen other books which detail the Marauder at war, I have had the priviledge to spend time talking with no fewer than six Marauder combat pilots, plus one who flew the legendary single-engine performance demos for student B-26 pilots. All were very proud to have flown the B-26, and spoke highly of its great strength and responsive handling nearly 60 years later. No other bomber-type produced as many individual aircraft with over 100 combat missions. Several Marauders exceeded 200 combat missions, and one was believed to have performed over 300! Some of those who flew the B-26 in combat in Europe went out of their way to communicate their disdain and disgust for the investigating "Truman Commission" via the nose art their planes carried. By all means, read this gentleman's book, just be prepared to give equal time to reading works by those who thought more highly of the Martin B-26 Marauder.
A Unique Book.......2001-06-19
Retired Air Force Colonel Lawrence Hunter has written a book as fast-paced, furious and ambitious as the aircraft who's 'development' it describes. Somewhat of a Cinderella among WWII warplanes by reputation lately, we are reminded by the author of the terrific human cost that led to the plane's low combat losses in the greatest event of the 20th century. More than that though, Hunter has employed a three-level approach to this military history, making the reading far more intriguing than even above-average traditional war documentary writing. Interspersed with the nuts and bolts story of a weapons system created by incredible urgency and plagued by fraud and just plain ignorance are the flyer's own personal story and the wide picture of the rapid annihilation of the Jews and others while America prepared for war. I found this organization and the book's fast pace invigorating despite the unpleasant truths it relates. Also, admirers of Harry S. Truman will find much to enhance their liking of 'Give 'em Hell Harry' because of his steadfast but ultimately unsuccessful attempts to save lives of aircrews frequently incinerated in the plane. My father was a gunner aboard a Marauder in the European theater and from Missouri, so it's easy to see the initial interest for me. However, this writing should be appealing outside more narrow interests because it is an exciting and unique approach to war writing as a genre too. Hats off to Lawrence Hunter!

Product Description
The relationship between Taiwan and China has been a contentious one for more than five decades. On the one hand, the two economies have become increasingly integrated as Taiwans companies have come to regard the mainland as the best place to manufacture their products and so maintain their global competitiveness. On the other, as China maintains its one-country, two-systems approach and some on Taiwan seek de jure independence, the long-running and changing political disagreement between the two governments remains unresolved. Each side fears the intentions of the other, and both are augmenting their military capabilities. If one side miscalculates or misreads the actions of the other, the United States could get drawn into a war between them. Untying the Knot explores the significant differences and many similarities of the two sides and the difficulties that must be resolved to calm the Taiwan Strait. What might the legal status and international role of the Taiwan government be in a future unified China? Given the growing military power of the Asian behemoth, how could Taiwan be made to feel secure? Complicating the resolution of these issues are each governments domestic politics and decisionmaking systems and the leverage game that they play with each other in the international arena. Thus multiple obstacles prevent the two from even getting to the negotiating table, much less reaching a mutually acceptable resolution of their conflict. The role of the United States as mediator is severely restricted by the nature of the dispute and the relations between the United States and the two parties involved; moreover, it is up to question whether either party would accept the United States in such a capacity. This fascinating, comprehensive analysis will be required reading for anyone endeavoring to unravel the tangled knot of Chinese-Taiwan relations. From the Foreword by Strobe Talbott: "Of all the potential flash points in the world today, none poses more of a threat to international peace and more of a challenge to the United States than the Taiwan Strait. And of all the American experts on that issue, none is more qualified than Richard Bush to explain its origins, analyze its implications, and propose realistic but imaginative recommendations for its solution."

No Knots are Untied with Mr. Bush's latest opus.......2006-11-28
"Untying the Knot" enjoyed a brief popularity in Taiwan, however the book does not pose any new solutions for the problems in the Taiwan Strait. These problems have been with us for over fifty years.
I will be quite direct and say that Mr. Bush has a very very limited understanding of international law issues, and his limited understanding is especially noticeable when he tries to discuss the "Taiwan sovereignty" issue.
Contrasingly, reading through the sixteen pages of documentation in a new lawsuit filed in late Oct. 2006 in Washington D.C. shows a much more complete picture, and offers some truly "creative thinking" on all related issues. This new lawsuit advances a little-known but surprisingly coherent rationale under international law to say that Taiwan is "an overseas territory under the jurisdiction of the USA." A summary of the lawsuit is here -- [...]
Perhaps Mr. Bush would be interested in studying these court documents, and other related background information on the internet, and then writing up an Addendum for his book !! My friends and I will look forward to seeing a revised version of "Untying the Knot" in the not too distant future.
Good choices going forward!.......2005-11-23
The author did a good job explaining the history of the 56-year conflict of the two sides. From 1991 to 2004, Taiwan invested a total of $78 billion USDollars in China and cross-strait trade was about the same amount. With no suicide bomber or mass murders of Taiwan investors, the two sides are still at odds with the political deadlock. Issues on sovereignty, security, independence vs unification, the leverage game, US factor.. were covered in depth. People in Taiwan followed the Japanese and US business model, the economy boomed for 40 years. Now that the middle class in China is doing the same thing, that is about 100 million out of 1.3 billion people. Again, the two sides are very different. Untying the knot will be at least 20+ years when the majority of 1.3 billion are catching up as middle class in China.
