    Book Description

Among the extensive holdings of Old Master drawings owned by the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum, the significant collection of drawings by the great Antwerp masters Peter Paul Rubens, Jacob Jordaens, and Anthonie van Dyck stand out as absolute highlights. This generously illustrated publication examines 70 of their important drawings, discussing not only the significance of these works, but also their provenance, attribution, and dating. It also helps to put the work in context by considering the work of a variety of contemporaries on the 17th-century Flemish scene, many of whom were influenced directly by the work of these masters, as well as by including essays on a variety of topics of art and culture in Antwerp. This book will be a major contribution to the study of 17th-century Northern European art.

5 out of 5 stars If Charles Schulz had played Dungeons and Dragons..........2003-05-14

John Kovalicýs ýDork Towerý series, since I discovered it a few years ago, has been one of the best treats Iýve enjoyed as a comic book reader. Itýs the story of Matt, Igor, Ken and Carson -- four average gaming geeks (average except that Carson happens to be a muskrat) who walk a balance between existing in the real world and escaping to a game world.

This volume, third in the series, offers some of the best plot advancement yet. For some time now Kovalic has danced around the fact that Matt and Gilly the Perky Goth would be kindred spirits if they ever actually met. In this book, he finally gives us that meeting -- with a monkeywrench thrown in. Matt meets Gilly, all right... right after he gets back together with his game-hating, geek-intolerant ex-girlfriend.

ýDork Towerý is one of the few series that really makes you feel for the characters without ever resorting to sappy moments or losing the fact that itýs a comedy first. We want Matt and Gilly to get together, but the obstacles in their way are so funny we donýt want them to stop. Every page of this book is packed with laughs. I canýt imagine anyone not loving this book. I've said it before and I'll say it again -- if Charles Schulz had played "Dungeons and Dragons," the result would have been "Dork Tower."

5 out of 5 stars At the Heart of Dorkness lies the ex-girlfriend.......2003-04-29

The third collection of the Dork Tower comic books.

Once again, our characters live their lives and poke fun at just about everything in life.

The main plot line concerns Ken, who against all the advice of his friends, is getting back with his old girlfriend (the Ex from Hades). But no sooner does he meet with his ex than he finally meets the cute and perky Gilly (the one we have wanted him to hook up with since the start). Triangle city. Poor Ken is stuck in the middle of gaming, relationships, gaming, humor, gaming, life and did I mention gaming.

A very fun series for anyone who has ever know a compulsive personality (gamer, beanie baby collector, etc.).

5 out of 5 stars Very funny book.......2004-04-30

This is a very funny book based on the radio show. I'm something of a trivia fan, and this book has some of the funniest and most entertaining trivia I've seen. The cover says, "Test your knowledge of narcissistic entertainers, stupid criminals, and windbag politicians." That was enough to get me to pick it up and take a look, and I was glad I did.

The book has trivia on other subjects besides the three main ones above. In fact there's quite a variety of stuff, so it's hard to summarize it, but I thought I'd at least mention a few things to give you some idea of what they're like:

A British spy manual during WWII recommended sneaking into German brothels and putting itching powder in the condoms.

Elvis offered to help President Nixon track down Communists and drug abusers.

Bob Dylan told the L.A. Times that he dislikes today's popular music so much that if he was coming of age today, he'd turn to architecture or mathematics instead of music.

Zsa Zsa Gabor once had an affair with Kemal Attaturk, the former president of Turkey, saying, "He dazzled me with his sexual prowess and seduced me with his perversion."

A species of ant belonging to the Camponotis genus can, when provoked, shake so violently that they explode, showering their enemies with sticky goo. They're able to do this because of a special gland that runs the length of the body.

There's even a funny piece of trivia about life in Antarctica. Condom machines were installed in the bathrooms at a research station on the Ross Ice Shelf. The owner of the vending machines said that, "It's pretty much a little village where everyone knows everyone, so if they walk into the loo to buy a condom it's a lot more confortable than going to the local shop and buying them where everyone knows what's going on."

More than 1500 people work at the station during the summer, compared to only 50 during the winter. So I guess most of the romantic dalliances (and condom sales) take place during the comparatively warm summer months. :-)

And lastly, for our almost as frigid neighbors to the north (having travelled around a lot of Canada myself), the Canadian Wildlife Service is worried about the increasing population of beavers and possible untoward encounters with tourists, campers, and park visitors. The Service issued a warning saying, "Beavers rear up on their hind legs and loudly hiss or growl before lunging forward to deliver extremely damaging bites." (The book then says the Service has advised Americans not to wear wood when travelling to Canada :-)).

Anyway, that should give you some idea of what the book is like. Overall, a very funny book that had me chuckling and laughing out loud more than any book I've had in quite a while.

4 out of 5 stars You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll wish this book was longer!.......2003-02-06

As a fan of the NPR radio show, "Wait, wait, don't tell me," I had to get this book once they announced that it was in print. I read it over a period of two days, laughing and learning about some of the weird and odd news that don't always make the headlines. I've listened to the show for about a year now and I still intend on listening to it for years to come. I give it four out of five stars simply because the book isn't long enough. Maybe the "Wait, wait" staff should come out with a sequel in the next few years or so. ... You won't regret it.

        Book Description

Few figures have captured Hollywood's and the public's imagination as completely as have medieval heroes. Cast as chivalric knight, warrior princess, "alpha male in tights," or an amalgamation; and as likely to appear in Hong Kong action flicks and spaghetti westerns as films set in the Middle Ages; the medieval hero on film serves many purposes.

This collection of essays about the medieval hero on film, contributed by scholars from a variety of disciplines, draws upon a wide range of films and medieval texts. The essays are grouped into five sections, each with an introduction by the editors: an exploration of historic authenticity; heroic children and the lessons they convey to young viewers; medieval female heroes; the place of the hero's weapon in pop culture; and teaching the medieval movie in the classroom. Thirty-two film stills illustrate the work, and each essay includes notes, a filmography, and a bibliography. There is a foreword by Jonathan Rosenbaum, and an index is included.

5 out of 5 stars Buffy, Han Solo, Aragorn, - what more could you want?.......2004-09-24

I confess that I know one of the editors of this book - which is how I came by it. Personal connections aside, it seemed to me that it deserves the attention of many, and that I should let people know...

As a pedagogical tool (for high school *and* college students) I have found it just excellent- not only when actually teaching texts such as Beowulf, but for a whole series of ways of thinking about films that seem, inevitably, to come up in my survey as well as medieval courses - Buffy for Dracula; Star Wars for any romance (Carl Grindley's chapter on weaponry here is especially fabulous, and hilarious, for this); ET for bindungsroman, etc. The last section of the book is actually devoted to teaching - and there is a great chapter on The Lord of the Rings trilogy on film, for those, like me, who would always rather teach the celluloid to the written version of that text (more exciting! pictures of NZ!)

But I would also recommend the book to those interested in things medieval, or things cinematic generally, and for students - the papers use theory of all sorts (narrative, feminist, queer, etc) in an accessible and interesting way, and they serve as an admirable 'how-to' for students about to write an essay on anything from Monty Python to the history of film.

This book is very complete and easy to understand. I needed a book that shows me how run my LLC with minimal effort and how to avoid legal trouble, and this book did just that. I highly recommend this book to others who are new at running this type of corporation and don't want to pay a lawyer or subscribe to Internet corporation maintenance services. With this book you can fly solo.

After you have formed your company as an LLC this book is a must. It has all the forms that you will ever need to create a paper trail for your LLC company, and how to do it without having an official meeting every time you want to make a major company decision. All you have to do is to modify the forms to fit your needs. I have given copies of the cover to my attorneys, bookkeepers and friends, to help pass the information along to their clients. This is a must have book!!!

This is a great book to own if you have or are thinking of starting an LLC. I've used many of the forms. The layout of the book is well-organized. Forms are easy to find on the CD. The tips in the book are very useful. I reference this book often. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Good Resource Guide.......2003-12-31

This book provided me with the essential information an LLC owner needs to avoid trouble with the IRS and the courts. This book contains a lot of practicle information, useful forms and many real life examples. It covers meeting minutes preparation, record keeping and the updated Federal 2003 Tax Act. This is a must book for any LLC owner!

2 out of 5 stars Can't imagine many people need this book........2003-11-21

Generally I have to say I was a little disappointed with this book. To be fair it lives up to its claims that it will basically help you run LLC meetings and provides forms for most basic LLC functions EXCEPT creating one. It provides no business advice and no tax advice to help with serious beginning operation issues. I was hoping for a book that would offer advice and successful strategies for managing money in the LLC and discuss tax strategies and so on. Advice, that would help me operate an LLC with the legal documents to back up the advice. That is not what this book contains.

This book will not teach you how to begin running your own LLC business. But if you are an LLC member with two other members in your LLC it will tell you to use form 7 to formally announce the meetings and form 8 to guarantee that the announcement has been received and 9 to proactively declare that the meeting contents will be....

This book will not help you make tough decisions but it will tell you what to do if you have already made a decision. If that's really all that you want you have found your book.

What strikes me as odd is that the two most important documents as stated at the start of the book, the operating agreement and articles of organization, are not included in this book. For that topic they have written a whole SEPARATE BOOK for you to buy and they kindly point you in that direction.

My general feeling is that this 50-dollar book is too pricey for what it offers. They should drop the tear-out pages, that no one will ever use since the forms are on the CD, and the one or two pages for each states specific LLC rules, which could easily also be on the CD since you most likely only need the paragraph that pertains to your state, that make up HALF the content of the book and lower the price to 20.

                Book Description

A Chance to Die is a vibrant portrayal of Amy Carmichael, an Irish missionary and writer who spent fifty-three years in south India without furlough. There she became known as ''Amma,'' or ''mother,'' as she founded the Dohnavur Fellowship, a refuge for underprivileged children. Amy's life of obedience and courage stands as a model for all who claim the name of Christ. She was a woman with desires and dreams, faults and fears, who gave her life unconditionally to serve her Master. Bringing Amma to life through inspiring photos and compelling biographical narrative, Elisabeth Elliot urges readers to examine the depths of their own commitment to Christ.

Amy Carmichael has been a great model to follow. Her love for the Lord spilled out to those whom she saw as His children worth saving ... even though they were considered worthless in their culture. God uses Amy's ferver to encourage me to continue on in difficult places. Thank you Elisabeth Elliot for using your God-given writing talent to so articulate the life of this precious woman of God. Your labors go hand in hand with Amy's in bringing in more souls for the Kingdom of God. To God be all the glory!

5 out of 5 stars For all who have faith and a heart for the nations... .......2007-06-23

Amy Carmichael is a hero of mine. I first read this book many, many years ago after God broke my heart for the nations. I admire this single woman's faith and "heart like flint" as she left family, comfort and friends to serve the Lord in India. She went out not knowing exactly where she was going (like Abraham) yet trusted in her Father to guide and direct her. Indeed, she lived out Isaiah 54 as she became a spiritual mother to many poor children who were sadly abandoned and/or neglected in India.

With a simple, resolute and steadfast faith, Amy built orphanages to defend the orphan and preach the good news to the poor. Her life was soul satisfying, multiplied and poured out as a sacrifice that others could live and find Christ. Beautiful.

Amy's like will inspire and encourage you to PURSUE the call on your heart and to trust in the Lord for provision, security and guidance.

Regarding Elisabeth Elliot, the author, I had the gracious opportunity to meet her in person.. and she is a sweet aroma of Christ as well. She trusted and followed in her Savior, despite the pain of losing her first love, Jim Elliot, as a martyr in the jungle of Ecuador. Through the death of her husband and four other Christian missionaries, many, many were saved - and many Christians called to the mission field. You can read more about their journey by reading:

Amy Carmichael is a woman who dedicated her life to serving "the least of these" with a heart focused solely on Christ. A story full of incredible truth and sacrifice in the name of the love of God.

                4 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2007-02-15

Elisabeth Elliot wanted to profile one to whom she felt she owed a great debt. It was through the writings of Amy Carmichael that Elliot first understood the great message of the cross, the sacrificial Calvary love of sacrifice. Before reading this book, all I knew about Amy Carmichael is that she is revered as one who surrendered her life completely to Christ. After reading her biography, now I know why. A Chance to Die is aptly named. Elliot recounts the many occasions and many ways in which Amy Carmichael chose to die--to self, personal desires, family and societal convention. The biography looks at her early childhood, her domestic service and projects, her call to foreign missions, and then details her life's work of establishing the Dohnavur Fellowship in India as a refuge for children whose lives were in danger.

Elisabeth Elliot, as one who is to many the model that Amy Carmichael was to her, was the perfect one to write this story. She writes about Amy with obvious respect, but also seeks to bust the myth that she was perfect, striving instead to show her high standards as something that could be attained. The depth of Elliot's own Christian experience comes through in the telling, even though there is no personal account, other than what is in the preface. Her research was thorough, including reading Carmichael's own published writings as well as personal papers, in addition to interviews with those who worked with Amy, and at least one visit to India.

Recommended to: Biography readers, those interested in India, missions-work, or learning more about the process and practice of sacrificial love

5 out of 5 stars A chance to die...to self and live for Christ, inspiring biography.......2006-06-17

We owe a special thanks to Elisabeth Elliot for the time, research and effort it took her to write this detailed but very readable biography of Amy Carmichael. It made me feel ashamed as I read this book to see the life of someone so totally and completely devoted to serving their Savior. What are our priorities in life? Everything we do should have the "seed of eternity" in it. (An expression used by Amy.) Amy was a missionary to India for over 50 years, and NEVER took a furlough or leave of any type! Early on in the mission field, Amy took in a little girl (only 5 or 6 years old) who had ran away from the Hindu temple. She was being raised to be a temple prostitute. This began Amy's life-long ministry of rescuing young girls from temple prostitution and molestation. Eventually the ministry expanded to also take in boys, and had a hospital to treat people in the surrounding areas. Despite the fact that hundreds of children were taken in, a strong family atmosphere was maintained. Amy (called Amma) was dearly loved by "her children". Just before Amy died temple prostitution was finally made illegal.

Amy was a truly selfless woman, whose ministry was not an easy one. There were countless setbacks, problems, and struggles along the way. She was even criticized by some as having ulterior motives for rescuing these little girls from prostitution. (Whenever someone chooses to do the right thing, it is amazing to me how many people criticize!)

Amy truly took up her cross and followed Christ with her very life. She wanted everything to bring glory to the Savior, and not herself. "A chance to die"...to self and to live for the Savior. This was a challenging, inspiring, and powerful biography. Read it.

                  Book Description

In examining the influence of historical analogies on decisions to use--or not use--force, military strategist Jeffrey Record assesses every major application of U.S. force from the Korean War to the NATO war on Serbia. Specifically, he looks at the influence of two analogies: the democracies? appeasement of Hitler at Munich and America's defeat in the Vietnam War. His book judges the utility of these two analogies on presidential decision-making and finds considerable misuse of them in situations where force was optional. He points to the Johnson administration's application of the Munich analogy to the circumstances of Southeast Asia in 1965 as the most egregious example of their misuse, but also cites the faulty reasoning by historical analogy that prevailed among critics of Reagan's policy in Central America and in Clinton's use of force in Haiti and the former Yugoslavia.

The author's findings show generational experience to be a key influence on presidential decision-making: Munich persuaded mid-twentieth-century presidents that force should be used early and decisively while Vietnam cautioned later presidents against using force at all. Both analogies were at work for the Gulf War, with Munich urging a decision for war and Vietnam warning against a graduated and highly restricted use of force. Record also reminds us of the times when presidents have used analogies to mobilize public support for action they have already decided to take. Addressing both the process of presidential decision-making and the wisdom of decisions made, this well-reasoned book offers timely lessons to a broad audience that includes political scientists, military historians, defense analysts, and policy makers, as well as those simply curious about history's influence.

5 out of 5 stars Very important read for leaders and citizens alike.......2003-04-04

I don't know if Jeffrey Record had the then-impending, now underway, war against Iraq in mind when he wrote this important book, but I don't think he could have made this any more timely if he had. From politicians to talk radio, the metaphors of "appeasement" and "avoiding another Vietnam" loom large in the debate over Iraq. I would suggest that this title be made required reading for anyone who dares send those metaphors into battle.

Record argues that Munich and Vietnam have been the dominant historical memes in White Houses deciding whether or not to employ American power around the world. For better or worse, what various Presidents and their advisors have taken to be "the lessons of Munich" and/or "the lessons of Vietnam" have been important, sometimes deciding, factors. Not surprisingly, Record finds that those "lessons" have often been misinterpreted and mis-applied by our political leaders, many times with serious consequences.

While this book is especially useful for anyone in, or who fancies themselves someday being in, a position of political influence, Record's work is also valuable reading for the rest of us. That's because he also analyzes how those same historical memes have been used by Presidents and their spokesmen to justify particular courses of action to the American people. It's important that we be able to recognize when that's being done, and equipped to decide whether the metaphor is valid. This title is a very useful tool in that process.

Duff Cooper, a British politician and contemporary of Winston Churchill, once wrote that one of the problems with democracy is that too few democratic leaders read history. The corollary of that, Record might argue, is that even the ones who have read history are apt to misinterpret it, or color their interpretations to justify actions they have already decided are desirable. An attractive metaphor can exert powerful force on decision-makers. Few things are more seductive ... or potentially more dangerous. Jeffrey Record is to be commended for helping the reader see though the seductiveness and apply the cold light of logical thought.

1 out of 5 stars Predictable, Boring, and Subversive of Good Education.......2007-08-27

I recently read this book. It was, one might say, a long and hard slog. It is unfortunately in many places a standard assigned textbook. The book has three main defects. First, it is written in the most predictable, turgid, and jargon-filled academic-ese I've ever seen. Instead of saying something was important it had "ontological reality," knowledge became "epistemological units," etc. Sentences were long, with far too many modifiers, and otherwise filled with classic academic writing errata. Nearly everyone who contributed to this collection should attend serious writing workshops. I realize some of them are not capable of writing well, but it couldn't hurt. Second, the entire work assumes the conclusion. It is taken for granted that education is not chiefly about giving young people the tools to think critically, criticize and advocate for their own values, and otherwise become effective and self-guiding participants in a democracy. Instead, 100% of the authors assume that the society is basically corrupt and that social justice means, in effect, the advance of politically correct values: indifference to homosexuality, suspicion of merit, suspicion of the traditional family, and undermining the traditional power structure of the western world. And, secondly, 100% of the authors take for granted that education's job is to raise the consciousness of students in so doing. That is to say, it is assumed that there is one right answer to contentious social issues, that "consciousness raising" is the answer to the problems, that families and other authorities that disagree with this view are malevolent obstructionists, that if necessary these groups should be misled about wat will be pursued in the classroom (since they'd resist otherwise), and that education should essentially brainwash young and impressionable kids into compliant liberals before they've acquired effective critical thinking skills. Finally, the book does not grapple with developments in genetics and psychometrics that raise serious questions about the now increasingly discredited mantra that "parental socioeconomic status matters more than IQ/Test Scores, etc." Obviously, Hernnstein and Murray's "Bell Curve" is worth reading on this score, but also Arthur Jensen's "G Factor." Minority failure is a troubling part of the educational scene; unfortunately, the prescription offered here is the same old ineffective program of spending more, defining deviancy down, and passing the buck that remains onto mysterious "institutional racists."

                      Book Description

Double stars are the rule, rather than the exception: our solar system, having a single sun, is in the minority. Orbiting satellites, ground-based observatories and interferometers have all helped discover many hundreds of new pairs - but this has left enormous numbers of wide, faint pairs under-observed or not observed at all. This is where amateur astronomers can help. Bob Argyle, a professional astronomer at Cambridge University, shows where enthusiastic amateur observers can best direct their efforts. The book caters for the use of every level of equipment, from simple commercial telescopes to micrometers and CCD cameras. Amateur astronomers who have gone beyond "sight-seeing” and want to make a genuine scientific contribution will find this a fascinating and rewarding field - and this book provides all the background and practical information that’s needed.

4 out of 5 stars for the amateur astronomer.......2006-12-04

Argyle's book is useful for the amateur astronomer. Showing how even in these days of multimillion dollar observatories, you can still make a meaningful contribution to astronomy with quite affordable and modest equipment.

The text goes through elementary optics, that can be found in such standard texts as Hecht and Zajac. But it quickly specialises in details specific to observing binaries in the visual spectrum. With simple measurement techniques whose geometry you can readily grasp and apply.

5 out of 5 stars All a beginner need to know about double stars.......2005-03-23

I have been a amateur asteroid hunter for a few years but lately my interest switch to double stars. I found that information found on the web is too "bits and pieces". This book give me (an beginner) all the information I need. It is the best $30 I have spent.

5 out of 5 stars Seminal work on double stars for amateur or professional.......1998-08-05

Couteau's work is considered one of the best treatises on double stars. Chapters on the history of visual double star astronomy, instrumentation, and observation are complemented by chapters on orbits and an appendix of some 500 double stars that have separations between 0.5" and 15" of arc. Throughout, the work is very readable, despite being a fairly deep subject. Certain chapters are more accessible than others, but the book is worth the appendix alone. Highly recommended.
