Amazing Book.......2007-01-18
I bought this for my husband (a filmmaker) and he devoured this book. He has other books about Truffaut, and this one still provides new information. The photos are beautiful and the text informative.
An illustrious insight to a master at work........2006-03-18
I think they should have opted for a color photo on the slipcover, as the black and white scene they used gives no indication of the stunning use of color photography found inside this book. It is loaded with stills taken from the production of all of Truffaut's films, and is packed with pics I've never seen before.
There have been lots of books on Truffaut over the years, and most of them covering his personal life, and in depth anlaysis of all his films, but this is the first I've seen to focus strictly on what it took for Truffaut to get each of his film's made. It certainly isn't a photo book, as there's tons of text accounting the many facets of a man who loved his craft. Everything from how certain actors came to get parts in his film, to how Truffaut would invent scenes in his films, right in the middle of production.
I certainly haven't read it all yet, but what I have I found very intriguing, and between the in depth stories behind the films, and the great pictorial history, this book is certainly a keeper.

Ernst Lubitsch, the German filmmaker who left Berlin for Hollywood in the 1920s, is best remembered today for the famous "Lubitsch touch" in such masterpieces as Ninotchka, which featured Greta Garbo's first-ever screen smile, and Heaven Can Wait. Kristin Thompson's study analyzes Lubitsch's earlier silent films of 1918 to 1927 in order to trace the mutual influences between the classical Hollywood film style as it had evolved in the 1910s and the German film industry of the same period, which had emerged from World War I second in strength only to Hollywood.
During World War I, American firms supplied theaters around the world as French and Italian films had become scarce. Ironically, the war strengthened German filmmaking due to a ban on imports that lasted until 1921. During that period of isolation, Lubitsch became the finest proponent of German filmmaking and once Hollywood films appeared in Germany again Lubitsch was quick to absorb their stylistic traits as well. He soon became the unique master of both styles as the golden ages of the American and German cinema were beginning. I first saw this book in a Borders and looked in it on a whim. Knowing that my great uncle had be awarded the medal of honor. I was happily surprised that he was in there (pg. 223) and even more to find he is also on the CD! My son never got to meet him since he passed away just before my son turned one so now I have a way of showing my son what his family has done! Great book many other great heroes in it. I will be buying more for my family and friends.
