An Editorial Disaster - Stay Away!.......2003-06-03
I was suckered into buying this worthless book for a survey class I took on Post-Production for Film and Television. What I hoped would be an enabler to my education turned out to be a hurdle: the book is poorly organized, the concepts aren't clearly explained, and the entire text is fraught with spelling errors and grammatical mistakes. When the authors aren't clogging the text with jargon, they're giving you advice on how to do business in this industry. If you work in the industry, as I do now, this book won't tell you anything you don't know already. If you want to learn about the process, this book won't enlighten you. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this editorial disaster!
Post-Production Bible!!!!.......2003-04-23
Susan Spohr and Barbara Clarke have created nothing short of a post-production bible. BRAVISSIMO to them both!! I would not have survived the last year in my job without their brilliant book!!! Everything flows in a clear, concise way, bringing the reader visually into the post-production process. Read this book and keep it with you as a reference tool! I guarantee you it is well worth your time!
An Excellent Handbook.......2003-03-13
The Guide to Postproduction for TV and Film: Managing the Process is an excellent resource for anyone working in the entertainment industry. I haven't been able to find another book that so effectively takes you through the nuts and bolts of post production, from scheduling all the way through to delivery. If you are an entertainment executive, a film student, or anywhere in between, this book will be an invaluable resource. I've been working in the film and television industry for twelve years and this book has helped me in jobs at two major television networks and in feature post production at several studios. The new edition provides accurate and up to date information and is the only book I've been able to find that adequately covers the film laboratory. The Guide is the one book I always have at my desk. I strongly recommend it.

Book Description
Where Joy Begins is an illustrated, powerful message of hope. World events and the loss of a friend inspired artist and author Chris Shea to create this powerful little book of thoughts she wanted to share with anyone who was finding life difficult. Everyone grieves at one time or another, and we often feel that there is little we can say or do to alleviate the hurt of a loved one. Through her sincere words and simple but moving illustrations, Shea offers a ray of hope and a bit of healing.

Customer Reviews:
A Classic.......2004-07-12
Frank Thompson does an excellent job of depicting the sadness yet triumph of the real battle in San Antonio in this book. This is an excellent novel which ties in adventure, action, war, comedy, and romance into one great book. Great portrayals of Davy Crocket, Jim Bowie, and William Travis. They truly were heroes. Sam Houston is also good, deciding whether to accept his destiny as a general, or to stay with his wife Talihina and the Cherokee Indians. This is a great read, and I highly recommend it.
A treasure for cinema buffs especially.......2004-06-06
Featuring more than 125 full color photographs, Frank Thompson's The Alamo: The Illustrated Story Of The Epic Film is an amazing tour of "The Alamo", from director John Lee Hancock, starring Billy Bob Thornton, Dennis Quaid, Jason Patric, and more. "The Alamo" was the first theatric film about the brutal battle in over 40 years; The Alamo: The Illustrated Story Of The Epic Film includes a point-by-point summary of historical events, an extensive tour of casting, costuming, historical recreations and set design, the full movie script, and more. A treasure for cinema buffs especially, and the perfect companion volume to anyone who enjoys and appreciates the power "The Alamo"movie has had in bringing history to life.
A must have for Alamo fans.......2004-05-01
The Alamo: The Illustrated Story of the Epic Film is a must have for fans of the Alamo. The book includes over 120 pictures from the movie, including the making of and production stills. As well, the full script is included in the book so readers can see what was cut from the final version of the movie. It is interesting to see all the things that director John Lee Hancock had to cut from the originally intended version. The book documents the making of the huge movie, background on cast and characters, and even some Alamo history on society and in the movies. If you enjoyed the movie, I highly recommend this book. Check out Frank Thompson's The Alamo: The Illustrated Story of the Epic Film!
Making of Awesome Alamo Adventure.......2004-04-05
Author Frank Thompson reveals hundreds and hundreds of details of the making of the most current version of 'The Alamo', which is surely to be the most historically accurate film on the subject.
From the beginning of director John Lee Hancock's interest in the Alamo in his childhood, through his early meetings with producer Ron Howard (originally slated to direct), to the hiring of two major historians and the building of the detailed and awe inspiring set, right into the extra-filled battle scenes complete with authentic weaponry and perfect period wardrobe, Thompson escorts the reader on an amazing visit to the set of what is certain to be 'the movie masterpiece of 2004'. Reading this book will educate you about the making of this weaponry, the selection of the cast, the decisions on the locales, the building of the sets, and every other intricate facet of film making at its best.
Get the inside scoop on the unusual 'naming' of extras, the selection of composer Carter Burwell (Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou), and what part Matte World Digital and CG plays in crafting 'The Alamo'. You will truly feel as if you are physically on the set hearing the actors recite their lines when you read the entire screenplay, which is contained in this book. Discover why the cast, including stars, bit players, and extras were totally personally dedicated to the making of this masterful film.
All this interesting inside information is accompanied by: 100+ beautiful color photos (many of which are full page) of the actors, the scenery and all that will make this film a beautiful visual experience, as well as historical details and time charts of the actual event that culminated with the cry of 'Remember the Alamo'.
You will 'remember' reading about the making of 'The Alamo' while you watch it unfold on the screen. This beautiful book will entertain and enlighten you and your enjoyment can only extend your pleasure when actually seeing the film for yourself.
A quote early in the book from actor Billy Bob Thornton begins: "When I first got here and I walked on the set, I got a chill up my back bone like I can't describe....and every time we walked through the gate...we were in 'The Alamo'...". Every time you open the pages of 'The Illustrated Story of the Epic Film The Alamo', you will be on that same set as if by magic.
Thompson has done an extraordinary job in capturing the making of what is destined to be a classic epic film. If you are not already dying to see this film, you will certainly change your mind after reading the book. If you ARE already hyped-to-the-max to view 'The Alamo', this will just increase your anticipation to nearly the I-can't-stand-the-wait level.

First in the four-book Diamond Heart series, this collection of essays--taken from transcripts of seminars A.H. Almaas delivered over a several-year period--is an effective introduction to the Diamond Approach of inner realization. Lamenting that human suffering is due to not living up to one's human potential, Almaas proceeds to lay out in detail a uniquely modern and strictly logical path to enlightenment--its purpose to regain one's palpable human essence. Carefully leading the reader through stages of increasing depth and subtlety, he reveals hidden self-knowledge. Chapters with simple titles such as "Value," "Truth," and "Trust" open doors to realizations that result in relief from existential angst. If you have ever felt you were missing something you couldn't quite name, chapter 2--"The Theory of Holes"--is worth the price of admission. --Randall Cohan
Book Description
This four-volume series presents a collection of talks given by Almaas on topics such as faith, commitment, nobility and suffering, truth and compassion, allowing, and growing up. Through these talks, Almaas offers valuable guidance and advice for those on a spiritual path, and he explores the challenges and psychological barriers faced by those seeking self-realization.
Customer Reviews:
Recommended reading for those on the Diamond Essence path..........2006-12-20
There's no doubt Almaas is a very conscious teacher. His written work and speeches are a testament to that.
The book, Diamond Heart, provides a decent introduction to those considering the Diamond Approach. If you're doing the Diamond Essence work then it's likely you'll have it, if you're not, this would give you some valuable insights into 'the work' to assist you in making your decision. For someone who wants to pick up a book and apply it though, you're not really going to be in luck here as the Diamond Approach is much more extensive than this book can impart and requires substantial, consistent application over many, many years under the guidance of a trained teacher. The Diamond Approach is Almaas' work, based on the elements of several spiritual traditions including Sufism, Buddhism, Zen and others and also some aspects of psychology. Many people, I think, will arrive at this work through Ken Wilber and this book is as good an introduction as you can get.
Almaas has written / talked(!) extensively and has produced some truly deep (and lengthy) volumes. This volume is a collection of essays from speeches he has given over several and is very much an enjoyable and enlightening read. It includes topics such as Trust, Essence, Allowing, Giving up, Truth, Faith and Compassion amongst others. It will give you much to reflect upon, however, for practical application, you're going to find it partial and lacking as that's not its intent.
A Great Teaching.......2005-07-21
Years ago, my then Zen teacher, Joko Beck, was recommending that her students read A. H. Almaas's "Diamond Heart" series. She said that his work helped her articulate the connection between the ego and the absolute. Whether or not someone wishes to pursue this particular path, this is an amazing book. Teachers often say that "we are love (or compassion, peace. . .)." Almaas helps us understand what that actually means.
Powerful, Simple and Profound...What a Book!.......2005-06-14
A friend mentioned this book to me at a party and I took a chance on it and WOW. This book is so valuable. The most important relationship you'll have in your life is the one with yourself! This is a journey, one you can't afford not to take, and affording it has nothing to do money, it's your life.
Almaas's Diamond Approach........2002-09-13
This is the first book in A. H. Almaas's four-part Diamond Heart series of teachings, and as such, it offers a good introduction to his integration of Sufism, Zen, and Vajrayana Buddhism with Gurdjieff and modern psychology into what he calls "the Diamond Approach" to realizing our full potential. "We live in a world of mystery, wonder, and beauty," Almaas observes in the book's Preface, "but most of us seldom participate in this real world, being aware rather of a world that is mostly strife, suffering, or meaningless" (p. i). According to Almaas, this is because we are not realizing and living our full potential. The collection of teachings compiled here (based on talks Almaas delivered in both Colorado and California), thematically linked by the "essence" of what is real in each of us, have the power to change the way you live your life.
G. Merritt
Transcripts Of A Truly Integral Transpersonal Body Of Work.......2002-08-29
Diamond Heart Book 1 is the first in a series that comprises a certain body of knowledge of the teachings of the school created by A.H. Almaas (a pen name). There are two complementary "lines" in the series: Diamond Heart and Diamond Mind. The Diamond Heart series, currently 4 volumes, is a selection of essays and transcripts from the teaching, and is non-clinical in it's language. I found the relatively conversational style to be excellent as a companion to the Diamond Mind series books which are rather technical and clinical in their use of pschoanalytic and psychodynamic language. The books in each line roughly parallel one another in content: the material in Diamond Heart vol 1. deals with much of the same material in Diamond Mind vol 1., The Void (and another Almaas title "Essence"). Reading them together gives one a much deeper understanding of the material. Imagine reading the clinical text and then going to hear the speaker at a seminar workshop or vice versa.
What is unique about this overall body of material is that it is truly integral in its approach. In that regard, it is similar to Ken Wilber's multi-volume uberwork of Integral Psychology drawing from both Eastern spiritual disciplines and Western psychological theories and practices. Almaas' material is very specific and uses examples from his students work in psychological and spiritual development to give you something to relate to in your own life and growth work which I found extremely helpful for anchoring understanding.
If the following ideas are appealing then this material is for you: When we are born we are our true selves as Essence and Being. Over time and through exerience in relation to our parents, family members, peers, and the world at large we develop a protective structure called the Ego. In the developmental process, we not only lose contact with our Essence, but begin to identify with our Ego structure as our real self. This state of affairs contributes to much of our suffering in life. In the East, enlightenment is seen as coming through the dissolution of the Ego, while in the West the integration of the Ego is seen as the final development of the adult individual. Almaas shows that both are right but incomplete in that each has something to contribute to the other. The work is about disidentifying from the Ego through techniques of psychodynamic work in order to dismantle it, while at the same time reconnecting with and developing those aspects of our original Essence in order to become a fully realized adult human being. Wonderful work.

Excellent, As One Would Expect Of McMillan.......2000-08-13
The late Dr. Malcolm McMillan, Head of the History Department of Auburn University, offers the only thoroughly-researched documentary of Alabama's role in the Confederacy. Utilizing the painstaking research for which he was well-known, Dr. McMillan manages to assemble a multitude of primary documents in a highly readable and valuable history. Providing his own short narratives as a segue, he produced the most comprehensive work on Alabama as a Confederate State. Just as his "Constitutional Development In Alabama" remains the most authoritative work on Alabama's six constititutions, his "Confederate Reader" is of such value that its mere existence has warded off foolhardy attempts by modern historians to duplicate or enhance it. This reviewer would also recommend Dr. McMillan's last work, concerning Alabama's three Civil War governors. Together with the "Confederate Reader", Dr. McMillan managed in his lifetime to achieve that level of pre-eminence occupied by Thomas Owen and A.B. Moore. Today's historians would do well to emulate the devotion of Dr. McMillan to research, the fundamental element of quality in historical writing.
Book Description
The War Against the Terror Masters explains in startling detail how and why the United States was unprepared for the September 11th catastrophe; the nature of the terror network we are fight-ing; the role of radical Islam; the enemy collaboration of some of our Middle Eastern 'allies'; and what we must do to win the war. Examining all aspects of the war, including the rise of the international terror network, Ledeen's book also visits countries in the Near East and describes the terrorist cells in each. Among the books revelations are: how the terror network survived the loss of its main sponsor, the Soviet Union; how the FBI learned from a KGB defector-twenty years before Osama bin Laden's murderous assault-of the existence of terrorist sleeper networks inside the United States; and much more.
Customer Reviews:
And then what? .......2006-09-21
If we follow Ledeen off the Machiavellian cliff, what is left of the dream of the Founding Fathers for us to defend? This book illustrates one thing that is very important: in times of stress, normally intelligent people lose their sense of reason and let partisanship, xenophobia, or even megalomania rule their thoughts. Ledeen tells us to pursue the very course our forefathers rejected when they founded the USA, and he says it without the slightest trace of irony. Unfortunately for Ledeen, he negates his own title, for if we follow his prescription, those who "hate our freedoms" have already won by causing errant and misguided patriots to subvert the framework which supported those freedoms. Unfortunately for all of us, Ledeen has been taken seriously and literally by the Bush administration. Laws, Constitution, and even Geneva conventions are ignored because the end supposedly justifies the means. History says otherwise. Ledeen apparently believes that his book represents the moment in which historical patterns no longer apply to our world. Historians, if there are any left, will tell us whether he was right.
Shooshie
Informative for leftists/terrorist supporters.......2005-12-08
I'm quite familiar with Mr. Ledeen's work on National Review and eagerly anticipated reading this tome. It doesn't disappoint, although some of the details are common knowledge to those intelligent enough to know what the goals of those that have used the "ROP" to justify murdering civilians in order to install a global caliphate (yes, of course, not all Muslims feel this way about the infidels. Mr. Daniel Pipes breaks it into thirds: 1/3 appalled at the terrorists, 1/3 that would not personally engage in terrorism but don't mind others involvement and 1/3 that want to kill us all).
In great detail, he destroys the liberals/leftists/Eurotrash canard that Saddam, the secular socialist, would EVER hook up with Islamic fascists of al-Qaeda. The longtime wink-and-nod relationship between the terror masters is well documented by Mr. Ledeen. They all share a common enemy: us!
Mr. Ledeen focuses on the big three for global terrorism: Iran, The House of Saud, and the Syrian, Prime Minister murdering, and optometrist, Bashar Assad.
The Saudis "problem" is simple. They hate us but need us to purchase oil, so their agreement with the jihadists is simple: we'll fund madrassas all over the world to indoctrinate future terrorists, be silent when you kill infidels, block investigations into the murder of Americans (Khobar Towers, according to the heroic Louie Freeh), and in exchange you'll lay off the Royal Family--and oppression of their citizens.
With Iran, Mr. Ledeen says we have may have missed our opportunity following a student-led uprising (2002?)that terrified the mullahs who subsequently sent goons, er, police to beat down the freedom seekers. He feels the US should have been much more vocal in support of the protesters, like we did with the orange and cedar revolutions. Mr. Ledeen feels that Iran could fall at any moment because the rulers have no citizen support. I'm not so sure. The citizens--albeit without many options--have been very silent when their terrorist leader proudly called for Israel to be wiped off the map. Mr. Ledeen feels Iran could be a turn key operation, overthrow and turn it over to "democrats" that are in exile...I'm skeptical.
With the Syrian dictator, it's very complicated. Since Bubba/UN/Euros pressured Israel to abandon Lebanon to Hizzbollah, the Syrians have maintained a huge, murderous, contingent there (even now). Then Bashar messed up bigtime: he whacked former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, and upset the MSM's favorite leader, Jacques Chirac. Hariri was a close friend of his. Amazingly, when the French/UN want to do something that doesn't involve Kofi/Kujo/Pooty Poot/Germany/China/France and the rest of the Oil-for-Palaces criminals, they can get tough. Months after the assassination, Bashar removed his troops but left his secret agents (even the UN agrees with this). With it common knowledge that Syria is the entry point to the head choppers in Iraq, I don't see any reason why we shouldn't obliterate the MANY terrorist camps in the Syria region. They operate in plain view and with the support of the Syrians.
In great detail, he also excoriates the perjurer/criminal Bubba for ignoring not just several opportunities to whack Binny, but also the repeated attempts by Sudan to hand him over.
And for those ignorant about Foggy Botton and the Slam Dunkers at the CIA, Mr. Ledeen dissects the "realist" view from Arab lovers in the State Department. These views are shared by our worthless CIA, who have waged a war against the President's foreign policy. Example 1: CIA agent and Binny desk chief, Michael Scheuer and his Jewish lobby libel, well-timed leaks about "secret" prisons for terrorists, and on, and on.
My only criticism would be not adding the Palestinian Authority to the list of terror supporters/inciters. Abu Mazen's support/blind eye to the daily murder parties by Hamas, Islam Jihad, etc. is both criminal and key to Middle East peace (why, WHY did GW have this Holocaust denier to our White House?)
Overall, a terrific, informative book, that may be a little optimistic about the future in the terror countries.
Paging Jeff Bezos, why no blogging option yet? Instead, pouring money into the far behind A9? Come on, Jeff there is no more logical blogging area that the people that love books/movies and Amazon.
The War Against the Terror Masters.......2005-09-24
Excellent read for the 'beginner' who is trying to understand Islamic Extremism. It gives the reader background information, details and explanations covering the major terror attacks in the last 25 years, and offers solutions as to how these ogrganizations can be defeated. The author also covers which countries or regimes are involved in the financing and supply of these groups as well as which states provide them with training grounds.
Insight into Karl Rove.......2005-09-15
Mr. Rove has said that Mr. Ledeen is his greatest policy influence. For that reason alone you should read this book and find out what these psychos believe.
Or if you'd rather not, the message can be simplified to this..."The world will be safe from terrorism if we destroy it."
While the truth and logic of that statement is hard to deny, somehow I cannot accept it as a morally sane argument.
What a moron!.......2005-04-09
It is imbecilic people like Michael Ledeen who contribute to the current U.S. foreign policy which separates the "good" countries and the "terrorists." It is common knowledge that the U.S. has a habit of supporting dictatorships, terrorist movements & groups throughout its history. Yet, the U.S. and people like Ledeen have the gall to declare a battle of "good vs. evil." Simply, the U.S. will support a regime whether it sponsors terrorism or not, if it so suits their interests. You have the Central Asian republics for example, Central American in the '80s, Saddam & Taliban in the '80's, Israel now, the list goes on and on. So, this "war" against the "terror masters," is a way the U.S. gov't can fool the American people into bloated military expansionism, imperialism, and a militant unilateralism that will ultimately cause its own demise. And, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the U.S. will NOT win for among other things, peak oil & the decline of the dollar will bring down the U.S. economy and hence military-industrialist complex very soon. In fact, the process has already begun with the Iraq war. The U.S. is no exception to the rises and falls of empires of the past, and in fact the collapse will be proportional to its size.
