    Book Description

The 100 block of Vancouver's West Hastings Street is the gateway to one of the most contested and controversial inner-city neighborhoods in North America—Vancouver's infamous and impoverished downtown eastside. Lining the south side of the block are Edwardian-era buildings that have born the brunt of shifting market forces over the years.

Developed in the wake of Vancouver's "emergence" as the terminus for the country's national railroad, the buildings in the area have been in decline since the 1930s, when the locus of the city's commerce began moving.

But the "story" of the 100 block is not strictly one of global market forces, nor does it belong to those who, through whatever political stripe, lay claim to it.

The book is based on a monumental-sized digital print of the 100 block of West Hastings Street by Stan Douglas, one of Canada's most distinguished contemporary artists, who utilized current technologies to create a 16'×3' panorama of epic scope, photographing each building and compositing the individual prints to assume a fantastic, impossible perspective; which is reproduced in the book as a removable full-colour poster, 5½" tall and 30½" wide.

Essays by Denise Olekszijuk, Nicholas Blomley, and Neil Smith use Douglas's photograph as a template for assessing the state of Vancouver's contested downtown eastside; its moral, economic and social implications.

Using the work of one of the art world's most celebrated and accomplished visual artists, the book unravels the dynamics of history and sociology, combined with photography and art, to create a compelling and visually arresting document that informs our understanding of what makes a neighbourhood. Copublished by the Contemporary Art Gallery (Vancouver).

This book is a nice cross section of the Tikis of yore, with a focus on the food rather than the drinks (though there's a few). My only disappointment with this book is that the its fabrication is less than spectacular. Other than that, the content is great. When I cook with it, I'll probably just copy the receipes as to not risk damaging it.

A must-read for Zorro aficionados, Sandra Curtis's thorough compendium offers a rich historical cross section of one of pop culture's most influential icons. Beginning with his debut in 1919 in a pulp magazine to Antonio Banderas's high-profile impersonation in The Mask of Zorro, every factoid and trivial tidbit about the masked muchacho is included. For example, did you know that Zorro, which means "fox" in Spanish, was based on an actual California bandido? Or that Batman and his alter ego, Bruce Wayne, are spinoffs of the legendary Latino? Curtis's husband inherited the rights to Zorro, which subsequently gave the author access to a vast archive of information not available to other writers. That, coupled with her own extensive research, lends to some interesting synthesis, especially when she touches upon early Californian history. Replete with film, TV, and historical photos and coupled with balanced film and television reviews, Zorro Unmasked is a satisfying reference guide for those who can't get enough of the sexy swordsman. --Rebekah Warren

        3 out of 5 stars Fair effort.........2000-08-29

I bought this book because I am a long standing Zorro fan, and must have everything Zorro. I was filled with anticipation thinking it would be a true 'inside scoop' on the film and literary history of Zorro. While it did have good information, very little of it was new and unique. Most was reprinted from various books, articles, or tv specials. While it was nice having it all in book form, I was rather disappointed there was not that much 'New' information. I thought Bill Yenne's book was better, and had much better photographs, although admittedly he did have the advantage of a Zorro series being in production at the time he wrote it. As a previous reviewer wrote, there were many innaccuracies in the book, and while it would not serve anything to list them, they are there. In any other book we would just shrug and go on, as no one can get everything right. But in a book put out by the wife of the owner of 'Zorro,' we do expect a bit better. I certainly didn't expect to see the tacky, mean-spirited (and untrue) comments about Duncan Regehr. It was quite a jarring chapter in the midst of an otherwise enjoyable book. (I felt that I had opened a supermarket tabloid by mistake)One should never forget the Zorro fandom spans the globe, and we all share information and experiences. Many people had opportunities to visit the set, and become friends with the actors and crew. All of them were generous with their time, and were very enthusiastic about the program and the Zorro legacy. Even now they are all delighted to talk about their experiences and autograph 'Zorro' photos. (Especially John Hertzler and Duncan Regehr) I guess my final word on the book would be, nice information that is mostly accurate, but take the personal comments with a grain of salt.

I've read the book, and Bill Yenne's too. Both books offer up different points of view and are both valid. Problem is the person who posted this... Full of errors and false information Reviewer: A reader from the United States November 28, 1999

Seems to have some issues with Sandra Curtis and the people who own the character Zorro. I mean belittling someone the way this person did in their review of the book just shows that the person has no valid points on the book because anything the person has said seems to be colored by some other issue not known to those who have come to maybe purchase the book.

For those of you out there looking for information on Zorro. This book does give you some of the information and is quite good. Disregard the person with the personal problem and their review. Pick the book up, it's worth the money and also if you can get your hands on the Bill Yenne book do so also. They book will make any "true" Zorro fan happy.

4 out of 5 stars Review of Zorro.......2000-01-31

This book is informative when it comes to the history of Spanish California and Zorro. It would have been nice if there was more information about Guy Williams as Zorro and more photos of him than the author provided. But if you want to know the history of Zorro this book good base to start.

        3 out of 5 stars Information needed.......2000-01-11

Questions: I would love to know if the book displays pictures of Guy Williams and has a consequent part about the disney Zorro. THANKS FOR HELPING ME and providing me with any info.

2 out of 5 stars Full of errors and false information.......1999-11-29

When I first read this book, I was highly impressed. I felt that Curtis had collected an amazingly great amount of information. However, once I inspected it more closely, I found that the Curtis book has at least seventeen errors. What good is a book in which you have to take everything written with a grain of salt?

Worse, the person that wrote it is the vice-president of Zorro Productions. The entire thing could have been *much* more carefully researched, but it was like she merely slapped together a bunch of stale information. She even neglects to mention the now out-of-print "Legend of Zorro" by Bill Yenne, which she probably used as a source of information. ("Legend" was the first *real* authority on Zorro in over seventy years.)

Curtis spends much time merely talking about "Gertz" (as she calls her husband, the president and owner of Zorro Productions) and whether or not he liked certain things about more recent productions. Who really cares? She is supposed to be unbiased in her opinions, but Curtis most certainly is NOT.

That's not to mention Unmasked's choppy, spoiler-filled synopsis' of movies, or the second-rate photos.

The book is also filled with many untruths about Duncan Regehr, and Curtis made an effort only to interview one of the cast members of the 1990-93 series. The other New Zorro interviews were sent to her by A&E productions, a fact she freely admits to in the introduction of her book.

All in all, "Unmasked" is a sad lot of hastily collected, predujiced information. I'd give it lower rating, if not for the important information on the original New World Zorro pilot. That is, if we can believe it.

If you really want an authority on Zorro, don't go to Zorro Productions. Find a knowledgeable fan.

Robert Quinn's Change the World offers profound yet practical guidance for those who truly want to improve their surroundings. Quinn, a University of Michigan professor and author of five books on change and organizational performance, bases Changeon eight "seed thoughts" drawn from the philosophies of Jesus, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr. After relevant quotations from each, he cites contemporary real-life examples to show how these principles--Envision the Productive Community, First Look Within, Embrace the Hypocritical Self, Transcend Fear, Embody a Vision of the Common Good, Disturb the System, Surrender to the Emergent Process, and Entice Through Moral Power--can really be used. "All our lives we have been explicitly and implicitly taught to see human influence as an exercise in domination," Quinn writes. By learning instead to practice a new type of "transformational behavior," he suggests, even "ordinary people" can have "extraordinary impact." The section on asserting moral authority, for example, segues from his own fifth-grade coaching experiences to those of basketball superstar Larry Bird to details on building a bond between "change agents and change targets" that effects desirable modifications. Recommended for anyone open to new ideas on motivation and stimulating change. --Howard Rothman

                  Book Description

In this empowering book, Robert E. Quinn, author of the highly successful and influential Deep Change, gives readers the courage to use personal transformation to positively impact their home life, work life, and communities -- to be what he refers to as "inner-directed and outer-focused." We are all potential change agents, but most of us are trapped by belief that we as individuals cannot make a difference. Informed by the teachings of Jesus, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King, Jr. -- three of the most successful change agents ever -- Quinn outlines eight steps each of us can take to move ourselves and others to the highest levels of excellence. Following his advice, each of us can access and apply the power that lies within us in ways that will change our world for the better.

This, more than any book, has had a profound influence on my life. Quinn helps us understand why our lives are so frustrating. The basic notion is that we are hypocrites. We believe or think one thing but we act differently. This integrity gap is what causes us to continue to accept the ordinary, or transactional, world as it is. He challenges us to reduce our integrity gap, and thus transform ourselves from ordinary to extraordinary human beings.

Quinn uses three historical figures to illustrate the power of transformation - Gandhi, Christ, and King, Jr. He also gives examples from his personal life and from his work as an organizational consultant of moving from the transactional to the transformational world. If you are willing to do the work Quinn challenges us to do, you will find yourself much more in tune with your highest ideals. By transforming yourself, Quinn argues, you can change (or transform) the world around you - your family, office, organization, and ultimately, the larger world.

Please read this book. Give it to friends and family. We (and they) are all hypocrites. Let us close our integrity gaps together.

5 out of 5 stars Change the World by Changing Yourself.......2005-05-26

Bob Quinn is definitely one of the most profound writers on change in this era. But his work is not for the faint of heart because he challenges each of us to start change initiatives in the place we'd least like to go -- inside ourselves. I found this an incredibly powerful book. I've used sections of it with my "change management" classes for several years and I know it has a tremendous impact on students, who like most managers have grown up unconsciously believing that change always needs to start with the other guy. If you want a simple formula for change, don't buy this book. Although it is full of practical, actionable ideas, "Change the World" addresses change at a profound level that asks readers to reflect seriously on what they stand for. It's a very difficult but rewarding assignment.

                  5 out of 5 stars real change.......2001-01-07

"Typically a top management team goes off for three days," writes the author Quinn. "They hole up in a room with lots of flip charts and go to work." Then he says that when they're through they typically write words on small cards and pass them out to employees. Sadly, he observes these cards are "ignored and things go on as before." The premise underlying this book is that Quinn would have us care enough to change this way of thinking. The key, he says, is to stop doing things out of self-interest and start identifying and going after the shared goals of the group. He does a nice job of working good examples into his text. He also points out how risky it is to be a true leader since it involves overcoming a fear of failure when trying something new. He also does a nice job of making clear that hierarchy in itself is not a bad thing; it's only bad when they're perceived as mechanisms that result in getting nothing done. "Hierarchies become frozen bureaucracies due to the failure of human courage." He makes a compelling case for why it's crucial to skip the hollow words and dare to lead toward change. Only then can organizations hope for real change.

5 out of 5 stars Look Within: That's Where Change Management Begins.......2000-11-24

Hopefully, you have already read some (if not all) of Quinn's earlier books, especially Deep Change which serves as an excellent introduction to this one. In the Preface, he explains that this book "is about changing the world. It is about coming to a deep understanding of human beings and human relationships." He then adds, "The book focuses on vision, unconditional confidence, and profound impact. It is about the mastery of human influence, transformational power, and the capacity to accomplish extraordinary things. It argues that everyone of us is a change agent." It is important to add, that Quinn advocates "deep change" as opposed to "incremental change." Moreover, no organization can achieve deep change unless and until those within that organization achieve deep change. So as I understand it, each of us must assume full authority as well as responsibility for (and have control of) our personal development. "There is a language of transformation. Yet most of us are cut off from that language. All our lives we have been explicitly taught to see human influence as an exercise in domination." Even the most sensitive among us is shaped by this paradigm or worldview. But this outlook prevents us from seeing more deeply into the actual workings of human systems. This book demonstrates an alternative system."

Quinn recalls the remark by Oliver Wendell Holmes that he placed little value in simplicity that lay on this side of complexity but a great deal of value on simplicity that lay on the other side. The framework within which Quinn presents his material comes from the "seed thoughts" of people who have mastered "the language of transformation." By "seed thoughts" Quinn means some of the "core notions that masters of transformation hold in common, the simplicity they send us from the other side of complexity." Specifically, Jesus, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Quinn focuses on eight (8) "seed thoughts" (eg Envision the Productive Community, First Look Within, Embrace the Hypocritical Self), providing brief quotations from each of the three "masters of transformation" which he correlates with each of the eight "seed thoughts." His objective is to explain how Advanced Change Theory (ACT) can enable individuals to achieve deep change in their own lives and then within their organizations. The title of this book (Change the World) may be somewhat misleading. I wholeheartedly agree with Quinn that "ordinary people can accomplish extraordinary results", both individually and as members of a group. I also agree that Jesus, Gandhi, and King were "masters of transformation" within their respective spheres of influence as were Carnegie, Edison, Ford, Morgan, and Rockefeller within their own. Quinn's basic idea is sound. He and I may differ only when defining terms such as "change" and "world."

I urge you to read this book, to consider very carefully what ACT offers to you (personally) and to your organization, and then to select whatever is most appropriate. Quinn provides an eloquent and convincing argument in support of his concept of deep change; better yet, he suggests all manner of strategies and tactics to achieve and sustain it; even better yet, almost anyone who reads this book already has the resources required. If you need help to organize and allocate those resources, and truly powerful encouragement to support your efforts in process, look no further.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding resource for copywriters and storytellers.......2005-05-18

Paul Harvey is a master at condensing the essence of a story into a few short paragraphs. These transcripts of his popular syndicated radio program serve as great models for anyone looking to create intriguing little stories for business presentations and sales letters. Highly recommended.

                    5 out of 5 stars fascinating stuff.......2001-10-03

I read this book about 15 years ago and was delighted to find it on amazon. This is a keeper, one that you can browse through over and over again. It contains stories of little known aspects of the lives of very well known people and is rather like an encyclopaedia based on People magazine. The element of surprise at the end gives a delightful twist to each story.

                    5 out of 5 stars Hidden History.......2001-06-07

As Napoleon indicated, History is the lies upon which we've all agreed. There is no such thing as a work of history that doesn't leave some important element out. Partly that's to make history more palatable for a new generation -- who really wants to know about dentistry in the Colonial era when we're reading about George Washington and his false teeth? No matter what the reason, though, once an item is left out of history it tends to disappear permanently.

Unless Paul Harvey Jr. gets his hands on it.

Paul Harvey Jr, who writes the short vignettes for his father's radio show "The Rest of the Story," has a gift for uncovering forgotten facts. Did you know there was another Three Stooges? Did you know Jack Benny was invited to join the Marx Brothers? Did you know one of our Founding Fathers kept his wife chained in the basement because of persistent congenital madness? I hadn't known that.

This book is an incomplete collection of Harvey's vignettes for his father's show. Some are published under the name "Paul Aurendt," and if you can find them, jump on them with both feet. However, this book provides a good primer for the forgotten corners of history, and also allows you to own copies of the vignettes Harvey has made famous over the last 25 years. One can only hope that Harvey's example will inspire more historians to investigate the forgotten corners of history and find what's been otherwise forgotten. I'd buy more of these books if more of them were available.

In the seventies, I worked construction and spent a great deal of time in a truck moving from job to job. During that travel time, the radio was always on and I heard many episodes of the Paul Harvey "The Rest of the Story" broadcasts. They were always interesting and it was a game to try to determine what the "rest of the story" punch line was going to be.
This book is a collection of many of those snippets that made up the "Rest of the Story" radio program. When reading them, I could still hear that very distinctive voice of Paul Harvey as he read through it. I enjoyed this book; it is an example of light, entertaining reading where you can actually learn something.

                      5 out of 5 stars Always interesting.......2007-05-13

After reading other items about Paul Harvey's "The Rest of the Story" segments, it sounds as though the accuracy can be somewhat debated, but what can't be is how entertaining each story is.

It doesn't quite sound the same when I read it our loud, but then my Paul Harvey impression isn't top notch. Just reading it though makes one think back in time a bit, and helps to put some humanity to people who were otherwise larger than life.

If you're at all a fan of his radio show (which is still excellent), get this book and value it as a treasured part of your personal library, and as a link to a past way of telling stories.

I remember listening to Paul Harvey's "Rest of the Story" radio bits in the seventies. They were always entertaining and a frequent topic of discussion among the members of the construction crew that I was the foreman of. When one came on the radio, we competed to determine what the "rest of the story" would be. While we would occasionally get one right, the vast majority of the time we were nowhere close.
There are 101 entries in this book and I found all of them well worth reading. Once I started, I could not put it down, finishing it in one sitting. It is one of those rare books, easy, entertaining and educational.

                              Book Description

The Paraguayan War (1864–70) was the deadliest and most extensive interstate war ever fought in Latin America. The conflict involving Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, and Brazil killed hundreds of thousands of people and had dire consequences for the Paraguayan dictator Francisco Solano López and his nation. Though the Paraguayan War stirs the same emotions in South Americans as does the Civil War in the United States, there have been few significant investigations of the war available in English.

In this first of two volumes, Thomas L. Whigham provides an engrossing and comprehensive account of the war's origins and early campaigns, and he guides the reader through the complexities of South American nationalism, military development, and political intrigue. Whigham portrays the conflict as bloody and inexcusable, though it paved the way for more modern societies in the continent. The Paraguayan War fills an important gap in our understanding of Latin American history.

This book is a valiant effort to understand the only true war in the history of Latin America but in the end it falls short. I feel that some of the classifications for starting the conflict are wrong and his analysis is shaky. He takes several liberties and makes excuses for the dictator in Paraguay. If you are looking for information on the war try reading To the bitter end by Chris Leuchars. It is much better written and focused. I don't think we will be seeing volume two anytime soon so if you want the whole war see the other book. Overall just stay away.

The Great Liberator of South America, General Simon Bolivar, had
a dream of an all-encompassing, Spanish-speaking, Latin American
Federation of Nation, based upon the concept and reality of the United States of America. Yet,four decades later, the 1864-1870
Paraguayan War shows that then, and even now, this wonderful
dream of Simon Bolivar is still many decades away. Bolivia still
wants it's pre-1879 seacoast returned. The Chaco War-1932-1935
shows this "irredentitism" spirit of revenge has followed Latin America into the new 21st Century. Paraguay has yet to recover
from the 1864-1870 War of Disaster. The 1826 speech of General
Bolivar, in Panama, was and stll IS a great hope for all of
Latin America, but the mechanics of Latin American Unity is
"just not in the cards". The continuing tragedy of Paraguay
haunts still--135 years later. May Paraguay find healing.
In terms of this fine book-
This book, the Paraguayan War is 10,000% "on target".

5 out of 5 stars The Paraguayan War Vol. 1.......2005-06-09

While looking for background information on Paraguay I stumbled across Mr. Whigham's book. The book focuses on the Triple Alliance War fought in the mid-1800's. I found that he has a great writing style and I found myself not wanting to put the book down. The text is packed with the history of South America, but put in a way that was cohesive and interlinked. If your interested in the history of South America from colonial times to the mid-1800's pick this book up you won't be sorry!

                              5 out of 5 stars Undeservedly obscure.......2005-04-12

The Paraguayan War (sometimes called the War of the triple Alliance or the Lopez War)frequently appears as a line or two at most in military histories and is immediately dismissed as not worthy of note. Thom Wigham has rightly resuced this facinating and tragic story and given it its rightful place among the great wars of the 19th century. The story is placed in context with a thorough exploration of the politics of the Plata in the decades leading up to the war; politics which can be most generously be described as "byzantine". The early conduct of the war is also both described and dispassionatly analyzed.

I do wish there were more and better maps. Also as a hard-core military buff it would be nice to have more notes on uniforms, equipment and orders of battle (as an appendix, of course).

My other wish is for Dr. Whigham to finish the next volume, which I understand will be in a couple of years. Until then I will have to satisfy myself with "I die for my country".

The Paraguayan war which lasted from 1864-70 was one of the bloodiest wars in Latin American history. More then 70% of the men of Paraguay perished in a terrible war that destroyed the country to such an extent that it has not recovered to this day. The Paraguayan was launched due to political machinations involving a civil war in Uruguay and this wonderful book delves into the root causes and opening campaigns. This is simply a must read and a needed contribution to a period of history that has been totally neglected by historians. Any student of Ltin American history will be happy with this work.

If you know about Cicero's method of arousing and suppressing the emotions, than this book can teach you alot about how he used them. However, I believe it would be useless to read Cicero's 'TOPICA' and then to attempt to dissect the logic based 'common topics' in every speech, like people may vainly try to do with Aristotle's logical 'common places' in his 'On Rhetoric' book. You may see some of these 'common topics' pop up, but in the end it will make you go nuts, since it is practically impossible to accurately figure out how Cicero used them in every instance. My recommendation is not to look for any of these logical categories and not even to look for the emotions Cicero tries to express when he expresses them, but to read these speeches as prose plain and simple. I've read and skimmed over fifty percent of this book, and most of it is clean, a lot cleaner than many of the other Cicerion speeches that Michael Grant has translated over the years. My advice to everyone is to read this book with an air of caution, and not to use such rhetorical techniques for evil and irresponsible purposes.

                                5 out of 5 stars "Necessary Darkness".......2002-10-31

In its last days, the Roman Republic was a wild and wooly place. Popular thugs like Lucius Sergius Catilina (Catiline) and Publius Clodius Pulcher saw in the shifting vacuums of power an opportunity to flout the law and win power and riches at the expense of their fellow countrymen. Standing squarely in their path was a Roman Senator, Marcus Tullius Cicero, who knew how to win men's minds with his powerful speeches and who had a fanatical dedication to maintaining the rule of law in the face of anarchy.

The art that Cicero practiced is not held in great repute today: We tend to distrust a man who can marshal cogent arguments and dazzling rhetoric in support of a cause. Consider, however, how remarkable it is that so many of Cicero's orations, letters, and other writings have survived today. Not only were his speeches eagerly read by his contemporaries, but early Christian monks saw in the great orator a basically moral, even if Pagan, writer whose work was worth saving in the scriptorium.

Among his own speeches, Cicero most highly rated his four blistering attacks on Catilina. My own personal favorite is "In Defence of Titus Annius Milo." In it, the wily orator shows he had a strong streak of Johnny Cochrane. The Tribune Publius Clodius Pulcher had been one of Cicero's most determined enemies and at one time had him banished for his advocacy of executing the leaders of Catiline's conspiracy. When Clodius is killed attempting to bushwhack a rival, Cicero jumped to defend the accused murderer.

In a letter, Cicero had bragged, "Let me tell you that it was I who produced the necessary darkness in the court to prevent your guilt from being visible to everyone." Where Cicero claims that Titus Annius Milo was attended at the time of the ambush with an "unwarlike retinue of maids and pages," he was actually accompanied by a large party of gladiators who were more than able to thwart the attack. While claiming that Milo had never threatened Clodius, Cicero wrote a letter to his lifelong correspondent Atticus stating the opposite, that Milo had openly threatened to kill Clodius.

Even when pulling the wool over his listeners' eyes, Cicero's political speeches in this volume provide a fascinating picture of a time and place which would otherwise be largely unknown to us.
