Book Description
One of the world's great collections of modern art in a full-color treasury.
Customer Reviews:
Take a tour through a wing of the Art Institute of Chicago.......2004-10-01
The Art Institute of Chicago has an almost endless supply of treasures from every time and place. This book provides a high quality sampling of their collection of twentieth-century painting and sculpture. The reproduced paintings and the photographs of the sculpture are all very good and nicely sized so the detail of the artwork can be appreciated. Obviously, they will look much better and you will be able to see more when you go to see them in person in Chicago. However, for those of us who don't have the opportunity to get to the Institute very often, this is a reasonable way to re-capture the experience.
Each artwork is given three or four paragraphs that describe the artist and the piece displayed within the artist's body of work.
The book is a visual delight that is worth touring through many times.

Book Description
This strikingly beautiful book-the first to focus on Degas` late work-presents a new and definitive view of his last decades. Degas played an integral role in reshaping the visual arts at the turn of the century, says Richard Kendall. The artist`s remarkable drawings, pastels, oil paintings, and sculptures involve startling explorations of color, unexpected combinations of technique and media, and a radical reexamination of the human physique.
Customer Reviews:
Six great articles and many magnificent plates.......2004-10-09
I was fortunate enough to see this show in London and actually have the article in the Telegraph from Sunday July 26, 1996 that inspired me to see the show. This really beautiful book contains six interesting articles on aspects of the art shown in this event. The first is partly biographical on the last years if the artist's life. I say this because a discussion of the biography must also include some discussion of the art.
The second article discusses Degas' role in the art market in his later years. His current popularity does not give you a proper sense of the complex reactions different portions of the art marketplace and the general population had towards him in his last years.
The third article is a fascinating study of the artist's craft and centers on studies and photographs he used to prepare for his finished and larger works. I remember being very fascinated by the studies while viewing the exhibition.
The fourth article discusses his use of pastels and oils in his later years. Degas was a master colorist and the way he layered his pastels and saturates us with color is still breathtaking. The fifth article discusses his subject matter and how it changed over his last few years.
The sixth article discusses his place in the community of artists and their society in his later years. This is interesting given his reputation as a recluse.
The second half of the book provides full-page plates of the paintings, drawings, sketches, and sculpture in the exhibition. There is also a chronology of his later years, the lenders to the exhibition and a detailed list of items in the exhibition, notes for the articles, and an index.
As fine a book accompanying an exhibition as you will likely find.

Book Description
Garfield, the feline master of the ironic aside, puts his paw to the grindstone and lets with these gems of good-natured insults, purr-fect put-downs, and deceptively sweet slams. For the young, the old, and the cranky at heart, Garfield knows how you feel sometimes--and he says it, in so many words....
Customer Reviews:
OMG!.......2007-05-12
I love this book, and I recommend it if you love sarcastic humor, garfield or both, in my case it's both. I got this book at Waldenbooks back in`99, and when I opened the book and started reading I couldn't stop laughing. Sadly I lost the book a year later, but as I was browsing here on amazon I came across it, and instantly ordered it. I can't wait until we meet again.
This book had me ROTFLMAO.......2005-12-25
This book had me rolling on the floor laughing my a** off. My sister and and I adore this book. One time I was depressed and she was reading from it to cheer me up. Well the book burned, ( another depressing story you don't want to hear about) so we are getting another. Maybe two copies, so we can share one with those who need a good laugh as well. We've even been inspired to come up with our own insults and jokes. Like "Are you having excruciating bowel cramps or does your face always look like that?" This book is also great for those who are sick or bedridden as long as they don't have to worry about splitting stiches open from laughing too hard.
great for teenagers.......2005-10-14
This is our second copy of this book. It is funny, and has provided us with "great comebacks" to insults from bullies and troublemakers (we don't always express these outloud, BUT it makes you feel better to make a joke out of it in your own mind than to just take it quietly). A fun book even if you don't need good comebacks to rude comments!
Typically Garfield..........2001-12-05
There's an insult, slam or put-down for absolutely anyone in this book. No one is safe!
I just find it hard to commit these insults to memory....
The best book.......2001-09-06
This is my favorite book of all time. It has the best insults. I go to school all the time with some of the insults and they are great. This book is totally worth it.

Customer Reviews:
I LOVE this book!.......2003-02-27
If you have ever wanted to play a trivia game using your knowledge of anime, here's your chance. The questions cover a wide variety of subjects, and they are grouped into categories. This makes it easy for you to use the book. And there is snappy banter included with the answers! Most of the comments are quite funny, and some had me rolling on the floor gasping for breath. I can't wait til the next volume comes out!
The Ultimate Answer To The Anime Questioner!.......2000-08-26
For those of us who like details, this book certainly questioned most of them. A very humorous book with comments for even the wrong answers, and a great guide for whether or not you are just starting anime or have become very obsessed with it. A variety of topics include romance, math, sci-fi, merchandise, etc. I can't get enough of this book! It contains all the current anime and puts your brain to work, but if you don't feel like doing that, the answers are easily accessible. A well-worth buy.
Hours of Hysterical, Fangirl (or fanboy) fun for all!.......2000-06-20
I was going to take this book to a party with my friends, but I missed the party because I was laughing so hard reading it! I was skeptical at first of the subtitle, "From Easy To Otaku Obscure," I thought, "Pshaw, what Sailormoon and Dragonball Z trivia probably." But no! It was a pleasant surprise to find references to lesser-known anime series' such as the Legend of Basara and Weiss Kruez, two of my personal favorites. I loved the Games section, Japanese anime-style RPG and fighting games are highly underappreciated in Western literature about contemporary Japan. When I met the author at a local bookstore, we had fantastic discussions about everything from the cultural and social implications in Final Fantasy to male and female sexuality in anime. It's refreshing to meet another anime otaku who has the brainpower left to discuss things intelligently. Everyone, including the smallest Pokemon fan to the otaku who's been watching anime since Astro Boy, should buy this book!
A "must" for all dedicated anime fans everywhere!.......2000-06-04
Japanese animated movies, called "anime", have received wide popular attention with the American movie-going public, and have long had an enthusiastic following among film buffs and students of Japanese popular culture. In the Anime Trivia Quizbook, Ryan Omega offers more than 400 questions that range from the very easy to the very difficult. Fortunately, he also provides the answers. The Q & A covers all the major anima genres, from giant robots and space aliens to silent samurai and "fan service" girls. From Ah My Goddess to Zetsuai and all the anime epics in between, Anime Trivia Quizbook is enhanced with sidebars, cells, and more! This is a "must" for all dedicated anime fans everywhere!

Extraordinary conversations with the writer and celebrity who elevated talk to art and gossip to literature; "a candid, controversial, and engrossing read... from a tiny terror who wore brass knuckles on his tongue"
-Parade
Who but Truman Capote would dare to say that about (among many, many others) Jacqueline Onassis, Norman Mailer, Montgomery Clift, Andr Gide, Marilyn Monroe, Lee Radziwill, Tennessee Williams, J. D. Salinger, Gore Vidal, and Elizabeth Taylor? Equally pointed is Capote's talk about himself-his childhood and early fame, his bouts with drugs and alcohol, his homosexuality, his assessment of his talent and his work, including In Cold Blood. He has definite opinions about good writing, and he isn't shy about saying who he thinks the biggest phonies are among his fellow writers. Conversations with Capote-which Capote intended to be the definitive in-depth interview-makes both the man and his times come alive and has what the San Diego Union called the "quality that will bring readers to it again and again."
Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended.......2006-07-25
Truman Capote was a great writer and self-promoter. Both characteristics come through in these interviews with Lawrence Grobel, an interviewer who has done his homework and only intrudes when he has something to add.
The book stands up well on its own merits, but will prove more enjoyable if you read some backgound material first, notably (in order of priority) "Music for Chameleons," Gerald Clarke's first-rate biography, and "In Cold Blood."
After you've read it, you may want to watch A & E's excellent documentary on Capote's life.
You Will Want to Read the Whole Thing.......2006-04-23
I own several books of conversations with authors. This is the first one I've wanted to read cover-to-cover without pausing for a breath. It's the first one I haven't been tempted to skim, looking for the best nuggets, because this one is FULL of nuggets. Capote isn't afraid to say, flat-out, what is on his mind. The chapter about his contemporaries is particularly interesting to me.
For instance, of Faulker he says: "Well, he was completely reckless. I'm not a great admirer of Faulkner. He never had the slightest influence on me at all. I like three or four short stories of his, 'That Evening Sun,' and I like one novel of his very much, called LIGHT IN AUGUST. But for the most part, he's a highly confusing, uncontrolled writer."
Which is all absolutely reasonable. Then Capote adds, "I knew Faulkner very well. He was a great friend of mine. Well, as much as you could be a friend of his, unless you were a fourteen-year-old nymphet. Then you could be a great friend!"
And Capote doesn't hold back about any of his other contemporaries, either, like Ken Kesey, Jack Kerouac, Norman Mailer, Gertrude Stein, and more. For instance, when the interviewer expresses his respect for Bellow's HENDERSON THE RAIN KING, Capote says, "Oh no. Dull, dull."
This book also has several photographs of Capote. The quality of the photos, at least in my softcover edition, are rather poor, unfortunately, but many of them I've never seen before, such as the one with Truman showing up to a court appearance on a drunk driving charge in shorts! The caption reads: "He [the judge] was very insulted...Actually, I looked quite smart. I had a very smart pair of shorts on and a very smart jacket and shirt and sandals."
In some ways, this is like reading a great comedy routine, yet there are definitely undercurrents of anger and sadness in this book. I highly recommend it.
Capote at his best.......2006-03-07
This is the book that makes you sad at the prospect of Truman Capote dying before he could finish his last novel, but you suspect that he didn't have to finish it since you get a lot of it from these interviews. He was one of the most fascinating figures in literary history and his insights into art, literature and celebrity are amazing.
There's a running rivalry with Norman Mailer, a dismissal of the beats, discussion of Breakfast at Tiffany's. He talks about interviewing the killers for In Cold Blood and how that led to other interviews with convicted killers. He discusses Hemmingway and leaves the reader with one of the best lines ever - "I am the man that Hemingway pretended to be." which is even more interesting when you consider Hemingway's repressed homosexuality (or accusations thereof) in light of Capote's openly gay personae that he displayed when that could get you killed.
Be warned. Once you start reading this book, you won't be able to put it down. So set time aside so you can finish it in one sitting.
Funny read.......2005-11-09
everything and perhaps a little more than you want to know about Truman Capote. A nice easy to read bok.
Ouch............2002-06-30
This is a great bed-side reader. Well, maybe not, because, once you start reading, you may not be able to put it down. Truman Capote started out as a celebrated, controversial writer, became the "enfante terrible", and spent his final years as a sad, outrageous, drug addicted talk show guest, more known for his scathing celebrity, his writing glory a thing of the past. He first achieved renown for his breakthrough novel, "Other Voices, Other Rooms", which was one of the first books to dare have a homosexual undercurrent, but is probably most well known for his classic bestseller, "In Cold Blood", about the brutal slayings of a midwest family, and, just as much about their slayers, two loser drifters whom Capote unjudgingly befriended. By the time these interviews were conducted, by "Playboy" interviewer Lawrence Grobel, Capotes literary fame had preceded him, and he had become, to many, an outrageous joke. While his public deterioration was sad and shocking...he often appeared on television or at appearances "under the influence", during his more lucid times, his observations were still unpredictably entertaining. How much actual writing he did during the last ten years or so of his life is widely speculated, his ability to do so maybe ended. But, back to this book....During these conducted interviews, Capote talks about the things he has done, and those he has known... he socialized with the most famous of his day, though how much of what he said was fact or fiction has been questioned by many. To say he is sometimes mean spirited is an understatement. If he liked you, he really liked you, but, if not, oh my....watch out. You would be verbally splayed for all to see. His comments were meant to shock, and they certainly achieved their desired effect. But they are done so brilliantly and outrageously that you can only cackle at his daring to say what no one else dared even think. He had no problem, when asked here about certain fellow writers or acquaintances by name, in describing them as "ghastly", "lousy", "talentless", "dull", etc..and his elaborations are scathingly, wittily entertaining. Ex: About Jack Kerouac. "That's not writing, that's typewriting." Jackie Susanne: "She looks like a truck driver in drag". Georgia O'Keefe: "I wouldn't pay 25 cents to spit on a Georgia O'Keefe painting!". What saves him from maybe just being viewed as a "not nice" person, are his extreme intelligence, wit, humor, and his always brutal honesty. This fascinating book is so entertaining that I am hard pressed to give just a few examples or excerpts from it. But I loved his response when Grobel poses the question to Capote, who in his lifetime had befriended (and later was publicly alienated by) many of the super wealthy, "How are the rich different? Is it just that they have more money?" Capote responded "No, no. The real difference between rich and regular people is that the rich serve such marvelous vegetables. Little fresh born things, scarcely out of the earth. Little baby corn, little baby peas, little lambs that have been RIPPED out of their mothers' wombs. That's the REAL difference!". Truman had a long, drawn out, public demise, and died what was apparently a welcome death after years of suffering. While many would have him being remembered as just a sad, malicious , social climbing, venemous celebrity, it is his record of brilliant writing and his incredible wit which will stand out. And the realization that, underneath it all, was just a sad little boy, trying to make alot of noise. Of all the books written about Capote, I have found this the most revealing and fascinating. Why read ABOUT him, when you can hear him, in all his outrageous splendor? As little Truman says, when asked to define himself: "I am a homosexual. I am a drug addict. I am a genius."
Book Description

A moving collection of wartime stories from the battlefield and the home front.
Customer Reviews:
For the Civil War Buffs Only.......2005-10-04
The book carries stories both fictional and non-fictional, and leaves it to you imagination as to which ones are real and wich aren't. Each story reads as if written from somebody in that time frame, so the reading wasn't always smooth as English was spoken a little differently in that time period. Some of the stories are interesting, but most are not as I'm not an avid Civil War reader.
Book Description
Drawing from his thirty-two-year radio career, the terrible truth of Boortz's book depicts his in-your-face brand of Libertarian politics. From questioning the true definitions of democracy and racism to challenging the entire Social Security system, he provides fresh insights into nagging social and political issues.
Customer Reviews:
A great book!.......2007-03-15
Short and to the point. Boortz as usual has pragmatic, common sense ideas and tells it like it is. He hits the nail on the head as far as the connection between liberals basing their ideas on feelings and emotions rather than stats and logic. Not to say there isn't a segment of conservatives that are exactly like this also, however liberals are more likely to display this. Hardcore liberals and leftists (as opposed to moderate ones) will probably not enjoy this book because of its truthful stance on the need to be an individual rather than be associated with a conceptual group.
About Time - Finally, a professional conservative opinionist........2007-02-22
I like my news and political science filtered through entertainers, so this book was great! Large print and short paragraphs, just like I like. Even a nitwit like me can follow politics now thanks to people like Neal Boortz!
So true.......2007-02-08
Neil rocks. So much of what he says I agree with.
Can't wait for his new book.
Nobody says it better.......2007-01-20
This is a must read for anyone that wants to understand the liberal mindset. He doesn't solve the problem but he makes is more understandable about why liberals think and act the way they do and why they are slowly ruining everything that is great about this country. Why do most college professors, journalists, and entertainers become liberals? Boortz has some brilliant ideas on this. Read the chapter on why America was not really meant to be a democracy, the founding fathers feared the effects of democracy.
One thing I don't understand......................2006-12-14
the one thing I don't understand about this book is the fact that boortz doesn't point out the fact that all liberals are mentally retarded and suffer from what doctors call the anti-american gene. it is quite amusing to me to hear all of the liberals whine and complain about a rich white man and this and that. maybe if you would get off your you know what you could make something of yourself. oh, but then you wouldn't have time to complain. I have a better solution for you though. since you are unhappy with the amount of dollars in your wallet, go down to mexico and exchange them for some pesos and salute the red, white, and green.

Book Description
The Wildfowl Trust (founded by Sir Peter Scott in 1946) has worked actively to promote wildfowl conservation over many years and this volume will surely be recognised as one of its finest achievements. Here in one volume the Wildfowl Trust, supported by the Nature Conservancy Council, presents a synthesis of detailed data collected by a wide range of enthusiasts on the distribution of wildfowl and their major habitats. The importance of sensitive conservation planning is stressed as is the vulnerability of wetlands to modern technology. The international dimension of wildfowl conservation is also well covered, especially by the clear maps of ringing recoveries and migration routes. This book emphasises the need for international action in conserving wetlands and stresses the benefits enjoyed by the fortunate countries endowed with these habitats. By their very presence the spectacular flocks of wildfowl provide one of the strongest arguments to convince laymen, planners and politicians that our wetlands are not wastelands but a very precious and vulnerable part of our heritage.
