    Book Description

Edited by Stephen C. Foster, Director of the Fine Arts Dada Archive & Research Center, University of Iowa. . . Dada was probably the most radical and significant of all the avant-garde movements which flourished in the early twentieth century. . . . [Crisis and the Arts] is a monumental project whose importance will be massive and enduring. -- Dr. Richard Sheppard, Magdalen College, Oxford, United Kingdom[Professor Foster] knows well the material, the scholarly literature, and the international network of scientists in the field of twentieth-century art history. . . . The completion of this project will enhance resources available at colleges and universities everywhere. -- Prof. Dr. Wulf Herzogenrath, Director, Kunsthalle Bremen, Germany Drawing together an excellent slate of authors, the series addresses virtually every aspect of Dada, from cultural politics . . . to its manifestations in Eastern Europe and Japan, areas with little if any previous literature. -- Patricia Leighten, Fellow and Associate Professor, Queens University, CanadaDuring World War I, an international group of young artists and writers fled to Zurich, in neutral Switzerland. In reaction to the horror of the War and the onslaught of new technology, as well as to the suffocating aesthetics of futurism and cubism, these artists began to create a new kind of art -- art that was antilogical, anti-aesthetic, anarchistic, confrontational, shocking. Performing and exhibiting at the famous Cafe Voltaire, these artists called the new art Dada.Dada soon exploded on the scene in other art capitals of the world: Berlin, Cologne, Hanover, Paris, even New York. Participants in the Dada movement included some of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Jean Arp, Sophie Taeuber Arp, Hans Richter, George Grosz, Max Ernst, Kurt Schwitters, Hannah Hch, Francis Picabia, Man Ray, Raoul Hausmann, Marcel Duchamp, and others alarmed critics, incited outrage, and generally tried to throw into question every possible preconceived notion about art and life. The Dada movement offered one of the first, most systematic, and perhaps most probing prognoses and analyses of what has been described as the crisis of modernism. Operating out of a period of acute cultural and social collapse and revolution, Dada provided a model for critique which continues to influence the present profoundly. Approaching the millennium, G.K. Hall & Co. is proud to announce the publication of Crisis and the Arts, the largest and most comprehensive treatment of any 20th-century artistic movement -- and the first to explore Dada in its broad sociopolitical matrix.8 volumes published between 1996 and 1998Lacking self-identified Dadaist, the initial task of this volume is to identify those movements in Baltic, Slavic, and Asian regions that exhibit the same spirit of revolt and criticism that typified their Western contemporaries.1997

    Book Description

Part gardening book, part "encounters with remarkable vegetables," Amy Goldman's The Compleat Squash unearths the personalities—yes, personalities—of the pumpkin and the squash. They are members in good standing in the horticultural hall of fame, and Goldman lovingly ponders their case histories and culinary merits both with common and uncommon varieties. She gets glorious help from award-winning photographer Victor Schrager, who brings out their eclectic beauty in more than 150 luminous color portraits. Growing, harvesting, and seed-saving instructions are included for the gardener, and for the cook a selection of recipes that show off the unique, lovely flavors of these versatile vegetables.

5 out of 5 stars The only Pumpkin Bible.......2007-01-11

This is a very visually attractive book, with superb photographs, but this is not just for the coffee table. For the devotee who grows pumpkins, all the information needed is there, down to conditions and seed sources for an amazing selection of varieties. For the cook, there are some unusual recipes, but also the eating quality of each type of pumpkin. Essential, this. Some are delicious, others vile. Lots of historical and other info & stories too. Pumpkins are my passion. I grew them, I eat them and now I paint them. It was great to get this book and know there are other squash nutters out there.

    4 out of 5 stars A winter treat for a gardener.......2007-01-09

This book is beautiful to look at, has a great deal of interesting history, useful gardening information, and some good recipes. Also it is inspirational, makes you want to source the rarer seeds and get out there with the spade. I don't know how much of this information is readily available in America, but here in Britain, where growing squash still mostly means butternut or Jack o' Lantern, the book is a revelation.

    Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book--passionate but balanced writing.......2006-08-31

Beautiful photos. Well-researched. Passionate, but balanced assessments. Writing comes from intimate and in-depth experience. I would have liked even more technical information on growing habits, morphology, and horticultural groups, but it is a wonderful book as it stands. Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars Move over, Sugar Pie: there's a new gang of pepos in town.......2006-02-14

I knew this would be good from the moment I first saw it on the endcap display. A few years earlier, Amy Goldman had impressed me with her scrumptious homage to melons in Melons for the Passionate Grower; now she's done it again, this time for cucurbitas (summer and winter squashes, which include my favorite vegetable-the Pumpkin!).

The Compleat Squash has all of the photographic panache of MFTPG, and all the passionate style of prose besides. The vast majority of listed varieties each have an extravagant, portrait-style photo of the fruit and often an entire page of commentary to accompany it. If a species has any points of special interest that are not obvious by the picture, you can be sure Ms. Goldman will expand on them at length and with flourish. She also loves to throw in anecdotes about how and from whom she came across the original seeds, recipes, stories behind funny names, and significant historical context for certain groupings of cucurbitas. Not since Georgeanne Brennan have I read such romantic, detailed tributes to vegetables! Too bad that there are human limitations on how many different cucurbitas a person can possibly grow, catalog and photograph in two seasons; you get the definite feeling she would have liked to have included them all, but had to content herself with merely 150 heirlooms.

But while Ms. Goldman may be in love, she's not blind. Each listing is straightforward about the variety's suitability (or sometimes lack of) for table use, decorating, carving, and/or livestock feed. You also get an estimate of size, weight, rind color, flesh color, color rating (!), fiber, date of introduction, synonyms and seed sources. There is also an introductory section that lays out nicely the growing and care of cucurbitas in general. Like a good matchmaker, she makes sure you and your prospective squash are well prepared before the planting bed is ever cultivated.

It is clear that the author wants us to not only appreciate cucurbitas in theory but to grow them in fact, harvest them, handle them, use them and save their seeds for the future. These are living treasures, *heirlooms*, that will disappear forever if we don't. That's a loss for our tastebuds and for the precious genetic diversity of the planet.

Okay, enough soapboxing. Let's get our hands dirty!
    -Andrea, aka merribelle

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful art book, forget the gardening or gourds..............2005-09-24

THE COMPLEAT SQUASH is about squash and pumpkins. Unless I am blind, there is nary a gourd to be found in these pages-at least not as I would know them. Billed as such, I expected Amy Goldman's book to cover all the members of the Cucurbita family (squash), as well as other items mentioned on the cover (pumpkins and gourds-especially the relatively inedible bird's nest gourd (birds sometimes like the seeds)). I've grown some great bird's nest gourds this summer, and I want to preserve them for next spring's bird's nests and this book won't be a bit helpful.

Not that the photographs in this book aren't beautiful. Goldman's text is a bit fluffy-do we really care that she would like to "Throw them [the Canada Squash] over her shoulder like a Continental Soldier" Besides that's ears or something else isn't it? In her own city-girl way, Goldman has managed to cover most of the bounty you may find at your specialty grocer's this fall, as well as the many you found over the summer if you live in New York or another location with a sophisticated farmer's market. You probably won't find them at Shopper's Food Warehouse.

Goldman has included 30 pages of recipes covering everything from `Stuffed Squash Blossom Tempura; to `Southwestern Winter Squash Chowder', probably the most useful portion of her book. As I wanted to know more about gourds, this book is an expensive disappointment.

            Book Description

German film-goers flocked to see musicals and melodramas during the Nazi era. Although the Nazis seemed to require that every aspect of ordinary life advance the fascist project, even the most popular films depicted characters and desires that deviated from the politically correct ideal. Probing into the contradictory images of womanhood that surfaced in these films, Antje Ascheid shows how Nazi heroines negotiated the gender conflicts that confronted contemporary women.

The careers of Kristina Soderbaum, Lilian Harvey, and Zarah Leander speak to the Nazis' need to address and contain the "woman question," to redirect female subjectivity and desires to self sacrifice for the common good (i.e., national socialism). Hollywood's new women and glamorous dames were out; the German wife and mother were in. The roles and star personas assigned to these actresses, though intended to entertain the public in a politically conformist way, point to the difficulty of yoking popular culture to ideology.

"Alan's brain got run over by a speedboat," Cathy Crimmins writes. "That last sentence reads like a bad country-western song lyric, but it's true. It was a silly, horrible, stupid accident." And so begins the harrowing tale of a family vacation gone awry when a speedboat collides with her husband's small craft, changing their lives forever. Crimmins (The Seven Habits of Highly Defective People and When My Parents Were My Age They Were Old... or Who Are You Calling Middle-Aged?) is used to writing with wit, self-effacing humor, and a warmth that can bring readers to their knees--or at least to tears of laughter. But in this stunning memoir about her husband's brain injury and the subsequent fallout, Crimmins has outdone herself, bringing all her sharply honed narrative skills into play as she tackles the life-wrenching drama of witnessing her husband's near death and ensuing rebirth as a very different person.

Crimmins takes readers inside the drama with all the right details and interior feelings to keep us fully mesmerized: her 7-year-old daughter's ashen face, her husband's twitching body, the paramedic's alarming question, "Is your husband one of these people that ordinarily has large pupils?" As deftly as she takes readers inside this personal story of not-quite recovery--more like discovery--she is also able to pan back and show readers the comedic silver lining (the self-important doctors, the moments of mishaps, and of course, the whereabouts of the mysterious Mango Princess) that lies within the cloud of her family's tragedy. Anyone who has endured a head trauma or loved someone who has will be engrossed by this wise and knowledgeable storyteller. The rest of us will have a captivating lesson about the rejuvenation of the brain as well as the human heart. --Gail Hudson

Humorist Cathy Crimmins has written a deeply personal, wrenching, and often hilarious account of the effects of traumatic brain injury, not only on the victim, in this case her husband, but on the family.

When her husband Alan is injured in a speedboat accident, Cathy Crimmins reluctantly assumes the role of caregiver and learns to cope with the person he has become. No longer the man who loved obscure Japanese cinema and wry humor, Crimmins' husband has emerged from the accident a childlike and unpredictable replica of his former self with a short attention span and a penchant for inane cartoons. Where Is the Mango Princess? is a breathtaking account that explores the very nature of personality-and the complexities of the heart.

                  5 out of 5 stars Well-written, Powerful and Excellent!.......2007-09-20

I read this book in four nights, right before bed. I tore through it like no other memoir before. This book, for me, was like reading my own parents' memoir. My father suffered a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) when I was four/five years old. Of course, so much of what was available to the author's husband was simply not around 45 years ago. I understand so much more why my father acted the way he did for the remaining 16 years of his life. This book is powerful. It is honest, raw, intense, lighthearted at times, funny, sad, well written and easy to read (though the subject matter is quite painful at times)... an all around excellent book. I am so glad that I read it, and plan to keep this one.

5 out of 5 stars Very moving memoir.......2007-08-30

I found this account of a severe brain injury and the bumpy road to recovery very moving. I ask will there be more to Cathy and her husband's experiences
written as a memoir at some later date? Maybe not this book was published in September 2000. Worth the read!

                  5 out of 5 stars spot on.......2007-08-23

Wonderful, spot on writing and observations about Brain Injury and recovery. This is a must-read for any family member dealing with a loved one with a TBI, or for anyone experiencing the ups and down post-TBI or rehabilitation.

The observations are keen, and accurate, and just spot on. Written in an easy-to read and follow style, it never veers into the morose, and is refreshing.

I am a neuropsychologist who runs a rehabilitation day program for brain injuries, and I have often recommended this book to my families. On the other hand, I recommend Claudia Osborne's Over My Head to the actual patients themselves.

                  5 out of 5 stars Valuable .......2007-05-08

I bought this book for a friend with a recent (skiing) brain injury. But I read it myself when I was in a similar situation 6 years ago. It is a great book! Every brain injury is different, but there are many consistent themes. Reading this book helps you understand what living with brain injury is - and how it may be different from your preconceptions. I certainly had no idea, beforehand. It is terrific and I recommend it for anyone is affected by traumatic brain injury and their families and friends.

                  4 out of 5 stars Awesome book.......2007-02-13

I had to read this for a class at school. It was a lot more of a pleasure to read than a stuffy old textbook. The author has a great sense of humor but is very informative about TBI's and how the family deals with this situation is very helpful since I am going to be working with this in my profession.

5 out of 5 stars A lonely hero: a cowboy, a sheriff, an orthodox Jew........2004-06-01

This question always fascinated me when watching westerns and their modern analogs: can one man take on overwhelming odds and win against indifference and bare evil? A common wisdom tells us that such a win is just a wishful fantasy. It is a bright ray of inspiration to find an unlikely cross of the “High Noon”, “Dirty Harry” and “A Frisco Kid” in a story of lonely and smart orthodox Jew winning against the huge murderous system beyond the worst nightmares of the heroes of Gary Cooper, Clint Eastwood and Harrison Ford. How big a “Gold Life Saving Medal” should be awarded to a person who saved 100,000 innocent lives from the gas chambers in 1944? Is there any monument that would give him his due? However, this man, George Mantello, was not only forgotten but maligned. The “delicate” reason for this lack of appreciation was that “all [organizations involved in the rescue effort] were of the opinion that any efforts they were not involved in were not valid” according to a witness testimony quoted in the book. The author provides mountains of testimony confirming Montello’s selfless dedication to the rescue work beyond a common comprehension. The book is thoroughly researched and documented but its subdued narrative reads really well. It is a rebuke to those who did little or nothing, an inspiration for lonely enthusiasts, and a glimpse of hope for the rest of us. Jews did have lonely heroes - Samson, David, before the spotlight shifted to leaders of large groups. Now, thanks to David Kranzler, we know one more such hero â€" George Mantello.

5 out of 5 stars Rescue of many Hungarian Jews.......2004-02-17

After Hungary left WWII, Germans felt free to round up Hungarian Jews for extermination. The book, based on meticulously researched material, reads as an adventure-mystery novel yet is non-fiction. It shows that rescue was possible to an extent when people, with proper leadership, rose up and protested. Credit here goes to the Swiss people, journalists and major Swiss Theologians and Pastors.Under leadership of outstanding Swiss theologians such as Karl Barth, the Swiss people evinced an extraordinary moral leadership in efforts to halt mass murder of Hungarian Jews. The drive for rescue was spearheaded by a Rumanian Jew named Mantello who worked for the El Salvadoran embassy in Switzerland. The facts give the Swiss people the credit they deserve for helping in the rescue of Jews and show that where there was courage and a will, many were rescued. Anyone with the slightest interest in human courage and dignity, not just the holocaust, should read this book.

                    5 out of 5 stars Beyond Schindler.......2001-03-03

THis is a compelling story written almost in novel form. The history is documented meticulously and represents a herculean effort by the author. This story of rescue on a grand scale is largely unknown and Schindler's efforts pale b comparison. This is a must read for anyone interested in the Holocaust. The author deserves much praise-I would love to hear him speak!

This book is part of an excellent 5 book series dealing with democratization. In this particular tome, different perspectives are used to explain the transition from authoritarianism to democracy. The importance of international actors, bureaucracies, entrepreneurs, the military, and economic conditions are examined to explain how transitions take place. Although some perspectives are county specific, all of them can be expanded to explain many cases around the world. All of the authors are experts in the field and the essays are highly readable.
