5 out of 5 stars An accomplished book on an important but neglected topic.......2002-05-27

Jonathan Gilmore, in his The Life of Style, combines analytic rigor, continental aspirations, and art historical detail and dazzle to ask and answer some key questions about art and its history: Does art have a history? Do art movements have a characteristic shape, and if so, what is it? Do they have genuine beginnings and endings? How do we distinguish between changes in movements and developments within single movements? Gilmore is learned in art history, the history of art history, and what philosophers, past and present, have had to say about art, history, and art history, but he also makes a singular and important contribution to all these fields, no matter how you divide them up. While one might quibble with particular interpretations of rival thinkers and artistic movements, the core of the book can be lifted free of such disputes and carried to the museum or wherever else you are disposed to think about art to great advantage. This is less a book to change your mind as it is one to clarify your thinking, but given the state of the art world and art world theorizing, where minds change and unchange without a thought, that is exactly what we need. And it is written with style.

Book Description

Horst P. Horst's images are the essence of elegance. Glamorous and sexy, they capture the celebrity and style of the 20th century. In this, the first book devoted specifically to Horst's portraits, 170 full-page photographs immortalize the actors and artists, designers and models, royalty and socialites who sat for him during his 60-year career. Coco Chanel, Joan

Crawford, Marlene Dietrich, Gertrude Stein, Salvador Dalí, Steve McQueen, Noël Coward, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Calvin Klein are just a few of those pictured. Culled from private collections as well as from the archives of American, British, and French Vogue, a number have never before been published.

Horst Portraits includes an informative introduction, extensive notes on both the subjects and the sittings, and a complete chronology.
150 photographs, 130 in duotone and 20 in full color, 212 pages, 9 x 11"

5 out of 5 stars It's a CLASSIC........2007-04-20

Title says everything about this book and pictures inside. There is also 40 pages containg biography of Horst P. Horst.

4 out of 5 stars Elegant, Stylized Classical Portraiture.......2001-09-21

Horst P. Horst was at the top of his game as a photographer for a career that spanned 60 years. The key to his appeal lies in a sound foundation in portraiture composition of the sort that the great painting masters used. To this, he added echoes of form, sensuous light and shadow, and a frequent ability to catch people at their best. While I find his faces often over or under lit for my taste, this book contains dozens of virtually flawless images that you will cherish. One of the nice elements of the book is that Mr. Horst was adept at color photography, as well as black-and-white. The book contains 130 duotone images and 20 in full color. His subjects are usually actors, models, fashion designers, and artists. The three Vogues (American, British, and French) were his most frequent employers. The volume is greatly improved by an introduction that explains how his career developed and his relationship with other photographers and magazine editors. I thought the detailed captions for the photographs were very interesting and impressive, giving the volume a depth that most fine photography books lack. The quality of the book, paper, reproduction, and design are all superb. This show will open in Boston in mid-October, and I plan to see it then!

Here are a few of my favorite images: Noel Coward, 1933; Coco Chanel, 1937; Deanna Durbin, 1936; Ethel Waters, 1939; Lud, 1938; Janet Gaynor and her husband Adrian, 1940; Merle Oberon, 1942; Salvador Dali, 1943; Muriel Maxwell, 1940; Loretta Young, 1943; Lisa Foussagrives, 1940; Gloria Vanderbilt, 1941; Carmen Dell'Orefice, 1947; Lady Diana Cooper, 1946; Rita Hayworth, 1947; Tallulah Bankhead, 1940s; Carlos Chavez, 1946; Irving Penn, 1951; Lucie Bose, 1952; Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy and her sister Lee Radziwell, 1955; Maria Callas, 1952; Franco Zeffirelli, 1964; W.H. Auden, 1970; Diana Vreeland, 1979; Kerry Harper, 1980; Duran Duran, 1986; and Catherine Bailey, 1989.

After you examine these thoughtful portraits, ask yourself what you want to learn from a portrait. Personality? Occupation? Habits? Relationships? Beliefs? Soul?

Exude your desire to connect and help others . . . so they will turn to you for aid!

"The specialists of the cinema said that its revolutionary politics were bad; the politicians among all the left-wing illusionists said that it was bad cinema. But when one is at once a revolutionary and a filmmaker, one may easily demonstrate that their general bitterness derives from the obvious fact that the film in question is the exact critique of the society which they do not know how to combat; and a first example of the cinema which they do not know how to make." [Guy Debord, on his film 'Society Of The Spectacle'] Presented for the first time in English, this volume includes the full texts of Debord's first 5 films, with an introduction explaining, amongst other things, why Debord is determined that the films should never again be shown.

                    • How blogs are different from e-zines, Web sites, and message boards

                    • Why businesses need to monitor blogs that discuss their products and services

                    • How to use an internal corporate blog as an effective knowledge sharing tool

                    • Future iterations of blogging, such as podcasts and vlogs

                    • Legal considerations

Worldwide corporations from EDS and IBM to General Motors and Sprint are leveraging the myriad applications of blogs for product marketing, customer affinity programs, public relations, and internal communications. Packed with top-notch recommendations from two pros, Blogging for Business demonstrates that blogs offer a competitive advantage that businesses cannot afford to overlook.

I'm a lawyer, and I'm a proponent of companies having public blogs. But I know that corporate blogs raise issues about legal review and control. To address those issues, Holtz and Demopoulos offer a number of thoughtful suggestons.

This is a great book for anyone interested in blogging, but haven't yet learned the ropes. It takes you step-by-step through the process of setting up a blog, discovering your blog's focus, and then promoting your blog.

Even though it is geared towards businesses, I would highly suggest this book for those interested in blogging for fun. It truly does break blogging down into an understandable format.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The authors clearly knew what they were talking about, and they presented the subject from a position of authority. The content was well-written and well-outlined into 13 chapters as follows:

                    1. What is a blog?
                    2. Business uses of blogs
                    3. Blogs on the inside
                    4. Monitoring the blogosphere
                    5. Tapping into the blogosphere
                    6. How to make money with blogs
                    7. Planning your blog
                    8. How to create a blog - step by step
                    9. Promoting your blog
                    10. Using search engines to promote your blog
                    11. Measuring the results of your blog
                    12. Legal considerations
                    13. The future of blogging

After reading this book I kind of felt as though I had read other books that were similar, but not quite on point. Then it dawned on me that blogs as a marketing tool are very similar to other self promotion marketing tools: article writing, book writing, public speaking, and seminar/workshop presentations. If you are a consultant of some sort and promote your services by writing and speaking, then you should seriously consider learning how to put together a quality blog or two. And this book will go a long way in helping you get a handle on doing it.

My favorite chapters were 1, 2, 5, 7 and 13. For me, those chapters were the meat of the book. I didn't care much for chapters 3, 11 or 12. And chapters 9 and 10 probably should have been combined into one robust chapter. I realize the authors made a fairly good attempt at explaining how to build a blog "step-by-step," but chapter 8 fell short for me. I don't think anybody could do that topic justice in just a chapter. I would have liked the book better if that chapter had been omitted and saved for another book to cover.

All in all, what a wonderful book. 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Blogging Resource.......2007-02-15

The authors of Blogging for Business, Shel Holtz and Ted Demopoulous, did an excellent job of standardizing the process of blogging and creating a book that I'd like to refer to as a `blogging bible' for anyone participating in the blogging experience. As the buzz about blogging has taken off, Holtz and Demopoulous do a great job of simplifying the entire blogging process. In fact the subhead for their book is a great summary - "Everything you need to know and why you should care."

I'm glad this is the first book I read on the subject of blogging because Holtz and Demopoulous did a wonderful job of describing the business benefits of why blogging should be on your radar screen. The first couple chapters of the book cover the blogging basics that anyone interested (or knowledgeable for that matter) in blogging should understand before getting into the benefits.

In a way the book serves as an instruction manual about how to set up a blog as they go into nice detail about the various services and functions available. I was able to set up my personal blog by following chapter 8, "How to create a blog - step-by-step." As I mentioned earlier, this is definitely a book that I've referred back to as I encounter anything new or confusing this blogging world that we're in.

Three of the last four chapters focused on the topic of promoting and measuring the results of your blog. Based on personal experience with blogs, I would focus most of your time reading and re-reading these chapters. As Holtz and Demopoulous mention throughout the book, the biggest challenge of blogging is getting noticed by others by understanding the `behind the scenes' process for promoting your blog.

Blogs, podcasts, vlogs (video blog) and other forms of `new media' are definitely worth consideration - especially from a business perspective. Blogging for Business is a great starting point for anyone interested or curious to learn more about this new influential world.

                    Book Description

"An Unplanned Life" is the scintillating memoir of George Elsey, a small-town kid from western Pennsylvania who, at age twenty-four, was assigned to Franklin Roosevelt's top-secret intelligence and communications center in the White House. As an officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve, Elsey helped brief the president and his senior associates on war events. He and his map room colleagues acted as the secretariat for Roosevelt's cabled exchanges with Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin, and Chiang Kai-shek; filed records of "summit conferences"; and stored in safes plans for future operations. Elsey's duties continued with Harry Truman's succession to the presidency. In 1947, he shed his Naval Reserve uniform and joined the White House's civilian staff as assistant to the special counsel to the president. In 1949, he became administrative assistant to the president, and, in 1952, he became a member of the Mutual Security Agency staff.

George Elsey was a Harvard graduate student in history who wound up as a 23 year old Naval Aide to FDR in the midst of World War II. Thus began an unplanned career as a key witness, participant, and recorder of one of the most important chapters in our nation's history.

Working in the Map Room, he coded, decoded, read, and transmitted the most top secrets of the war, including:

-Handing Churchill the news that the Allies had sunk three German U-Boats, which Churchill knew meant that we'd broken the top secret German Enigma code. Churchill jumped up and down and shouted "We got them! We got them! We got them!" This was in May, 1943, regarded by many as the turning point of the war.
-Handing FDR the news that Mussolini's government had collapsed in July, 1943.
-Handing Truman the news of the atomic bomb.

But he didn't just pass along news, he made news. He was a key architect of Truman's foreign policy, and also nudged him to proceed with civil rights speeches. And then during the "greatest political upset of the century," George Elsey wrote Truman's speeches during his famous Whistle Stop Campaign, sometimes as many as 15 speeches a day.

He had many more accomplishments in government life as well.

He worked at the Red Cross for over 20 years, 13 as President, and was personally responsible for many of the core tenets that live on to this day.

George Elsey is the kind of man we all want to be, and his story, written with great candor, modesty, and precision, reminds us that giants used to roam the halls of the White House.

This book is a joy to read. George Elsey has told the story of his experiences with clarity and continuity that makes history reading fun. The word serendipity came to mind numerous times while George relates the fortuitous events in his life. He does not belabor the reader with oft-told events that are common knowledge. His narrative style paints a vivid picture of how important and significant world affairs melded together through the 40s, 50s and 60s. Persons who also grew up in this time-frame will immediately relate to the events. George Mckee Elsey still exhibited his sharpness of mind during a recent radio program on NPR called, The Book Guys.

George Elsey was one of the architects of Truman's upset of 1948. Truman even predicted the outcome some weeks before the election to Elsey and Elsey put the prediction in a safe place. Truman was a little optimistic, but he really defied the odds and the bookmakers in Nevada by beating Tom Dewey.
This is a must for any fan of Harry S Truman. Bet they sell lots of this book at the Truman Library in Independence, MO. There were no two people like Bess and Harry Truman.

While the title of this book could fit most of our lives, most of us do not get to go to Princeton, and then assigned to work in the White House through World War II and beyond.

Mr. Elsey did this and more. He was assigned to the White House early in the war. He was to remain, first with Roosevelt and then with Truman for many years. Later, during the Viet Nam war he worked with Clark Clifford looking for ways to get out of the war. Finally he spent a long career with the Red Cross.

This career placed him near the center of power for many of the critical years of the 20th century. Now at 88 years old, it is clear that his memory is still sharp. And as his attitude towards life comes through it is easy to see how he would have fit into many different assignments.

The photograph section of the book is fascinating as it shows him off to the side or behind the president, but often with people very powerful in their own right.

                    From National Review Online:
An Unplanned Life, by George M. Elsey. The newly published reminiscences of the author's days as a Naval aide to FDR and speechwriter and advisor to President Truman. Now 87, Mr. Elsey spent many hours with Roosevelt in the White House Map Room, served as the president's personal witness to the invasion of Normandy, and decoded and delivered to Truman the first report of the mission over Hiroshima. The stories are fascinating and engagingly told - the product of careful note-taking, an undimmed memory, and a modest, gentlemanly character. --Matthew Scully

                      Book Description

Between 1939 and 1941, Britain had a terrible dilemma. She was keen to see Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and Yugoslavia join the Allies against Nazi Germany, but the 1939 Molotov Ribbentrop Pact had changed everything: the Balkan countries were far more afraid of Stalin than of Hitler. Britain and France were also concerned about the Soviets giving so much oil to Germany: in 1940 Britain almost went to war with the USSR in an attack on the Caucasus. This book looks at how Britain tried to resolve these dilemmas and ultimately failed to do so.

                      Book Description

This devastating book begins with an account of a crime that is by now almost commonplace: on December 16, 1988, sixteen-year-old Nicholas Elliot walked into his Virginia high school with a Cobray M-11/9 and several hundred rounds of ammunition tucked in his backpack. By day's end, he had killed one teacher and severely wounded another.

In Lethal Passage Erik Larson shows us how a disturbed teenager was able to buy a weapon advertised as "the gun that made the eighties roar." In so doing, he not only illuminates America's gun culture -- its manufacturers, dealers, buffs, and propagandists -- but also offers concrete solutions to our national epidemic of death by firearm. The result is a book that can -- and should -- save lives, and that has already become an essential text in the gun-control debate.

                      5 out of 5 stars Ironic Passage.......2006-04-03

When I read Erik Larson, I know I'm in for a treat, and this was no exception. This book not only tells the story of how a bullied boy takes his anger out using a gun at school, but the story of the inadequicies of gun legislation and the winding road the NRA has taken interpreting the 2nd Amendment. The one irony I found that Larson points out is that it's harder to get a driver's license than it is to get a gun in the United States. What I like most about the book is that Larson provides a solution to the gun problem and outlines a very reasonable and comprehensive bill regarding the use and regulations of guns. But I have to agree it would be impossible to get through legislation, not because it's unworthy, but because our current government is a messy monolith of a bureacracy where nothing gets done due to poor representation, egos, and political shortsightedness--in my humble opinion. Our forefathers would roll over in their graves if they could see what has become of our sacred 2nd Amendment. Excellent book by an author who does his homework.

                      2 out of 5 stars Well-written, but biased.......2003-03-14

This is a reasonably well written, but undeniably biased tale. The statistics are slanted and untrustworthy, and the rhetoric is tough to wade through for anyone on the pro-rights side of this issue.

3 out of 5 stars One sided view point.......1999-07-26

Larson does show that straw purchasers of handguns contribute to crime. He spends little or no time on the contributing factors for such gun purchases. He does not address guns obtained by theft, or illegal sales or the lending of firearms within extended families, gangs or circles of acquaintances.

If your mind is already made up, you'll like this book.

4 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for anyone joining the NRA!.......1999-02-08

This is a very well written and researched account of a tragic event of the nature we encounter too often in the daily news. At the same time, it illuminates the tragic and absurd situation in which the country has placed itself on the subject of gun control.

5 out of 5 stars Accurate and Honest.......1998-07-05

Being aware of the real life events of the book, I can say that Lethal Passage is accurate and honest. Mr. Larson exposes the cracks in the gun control system and shows the ease with which a boy could purchase an automatic weapon and murder in cold blood. The murder story can make one cry in sorrow and in anger. His purpose in writing was to make a point in order to keep similar tragedies from occurring again. Unfortunately, up to this point, no one has listened.
