Book Description
The work of the eminent French cultural critic Louis Marin (1931-92) is becoming increasingly important to English-speaking scholars concerned with issues of representation. To Destroy Painting, first published in France in 1977, marks a milestone in Marin's thought about the aims of painting in Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. A meditation on the work of Poussin and Caravaggio and on their milieux, the book explores a number of notions implied by theories of painting and offers insight into the aims and effects of visual representaion.

Hollywood Glamor Portraits.......2007-02-16
If your into black and white portraits you'll enjoy this book; a collection of portraits to inspire any student of photography.
Hollywood publicity shots at their best.......2007-01-11
If you love old style Hollywood photography this book is a must for your collection. My only wish was that it showed some of the lighting and techniques used to take the images. But as far as a straight forward picture book goes even if your not a photographer you'll enjoy the great looks and drama from the past.
The Gods of the 50's are missing!.......2004-05-08
This is a great coffee table book, I very much enjoy looking through it (being a vintage photography/Hollywood fan myself), but I have to say, I was most dissapointed when I didn't come across some of my fav. stars.
Such as:
-Sinatra
-Marilyn
-Audrey
So if your a fan of them, don't get this book. ^_~
Otherwise, it is a good book to have, if you like Vintage Hollywood, or just looking at the glam portraits of the past.
Images From A Bygone Era.......2003-02-09
Where to start? This is almost a wordless book filled with 145 glamour shots from the "Golden Age" of Hollywood. I would say that the book is a work of "art" and contains the work of many masters of still photography of the era. Some of the photos are truly stunning an deserve to be shown in the top Museums in world. The book uses high quality, acid-free paper and strong binding that enhances the book as a collectable. It would make a nice piece to anyone's collection of art books and you will page through it every so often. The reason that I did not give the book a higher rating is because it is quite short, it's a paperback and does contain many average works (in my opinion).
My personal favs were: Carole Lombard, Jean Harlow and Louise Brooks.
thank you for your time, David
A wonderful collection of photos for all classic film fans.........2001-08-16
Here is a beautiful book with some breathtaking photos of some the hottest Hollywood film stars of the golden era. The quality of the first and oldest photos are not the best, but one can see an improvement as the years go by. What makes these photos so special are the talented actors who can portray just about any emotion the photographer calls for and his ability to capture it on film. The best ones at this is Joan Crawford and Marlene Dietrich.
My favorite is one of Carole Lombard on page 40. It will knock your socks off. I too wish these books came in hardcover, but then it wouldn't be as affordable. A wonderful addition to your library and for anyone who loves the old movie stars.
Book Description
More seriously funny writing from American's most trusted humor anthology
Witty, wise, and just plain wonderful, the inaugural volume of this biennial, Mirth of a Nation, ensured a place for the best contemporary humor writing in the country. And with this second treasury, Michael J. Rosen has once again assembled a triumphant salute to one of America's greatest assets: its sense of humor. More than five dozen acclaimed authors showcase their hilariously inventive works, including Paul Rudnick, Henry Alford, Susan McCarthy, Media Person Lewis Grossberger, Ian Frazier, Richard Bausch, Amy Krouse Rosenthal, Nell Scovell, Andy Borowitz, and Ben Greenman -- just to mention a handful so that the other contributors can justify their feelings that the world slights them.
But there's more! More Mirth of a Nation includes scads of Unnatural Histories from Randy Cohen, Will Durst's "Top Top-100 Lists" (including the top 100 colors, foods, and body parts), and three unabridged (albeit rather short) chapbooks:
David Bader's "How to Meditate Faster" (Enlightenment for those who keep asking, "Are we done yet?")
Matt Neuman's "49 Simple Things You Can Do to Save the Earth" (for instance, "Make your own honey" and "Share your shower.")
Francis Heaney's "Holy Tango of Poetry" (which answers the question, "What if poets wrote poems whose titles were anagrams of their names, i.e., 'Toilets,' by T. S. Eliot?")
And there's still more: "The Periodic Table of Rejected Elements," meaningless fables, Van Gogh's Etch A Sketch drawings, a Zagat's survey of existence, an international baby-naming encyclopedia, Aristotle's long-lost treatise "On Baseball," and an unhealthy selection of letters from Dr. Science's mailbag. And that's just for starters! Just remember, as one reviewer wrote of the first volume, "Don't drink milk while reading."
Customer Reviews:
Mirth?.......2005-02-23
This piece of garbage is not worth your time.Go elsewhere for true amusement.
Rediscover Kurt Vonnegut.
This entire book is just terrible and was the only thing I had on my cross country flight.
Where's The Mirth?.......2004-04-14
Rarely have I been as disappointed with a book as I was with this one. I love a good laugh, and picked this book up while on a business trip, expecting to have a good chuckle while on the airplane, but alas it was not like that at all.
There were one or two gems in here, but mostly this is a collection of "almost funny" stories and essays. Many of the writers here are trying way too hard to be hip and intellectual.
You will find more laughs per page in this month's issue of "The Economist" magazine. Do yourself a favor and skip this book. Try anything by Woody Allen or P.G. Wodehouse instead.
This is funny?.......2003-07-28
Ok, granted, there ARE a FEW things in here that deserve a chuckle, but for the most part, this stuff is pure drivel. Definitely not a "sit-down-and-read-it-all-in-one-go" book, but even when broken up into small chunks, you'll spend forever and a day looking for something that's truly funny.
A definite 4+........2003-06-04
This book is a compilation of funny writings by prolific American writers. Betwixt a strange look at Pokémon and a letter from the Census takers, there are great things, like the periodic table of rejected elements, and 100 favorite body parts. This book is hilarious, and I recommend it to all people, except for people who make census, and the creator of Pokémon.
Loved it!.......2003-02-07
This is a terrific compendium, with a little something for everyone, no matter how high or low their brow. There are some head scratchers, to be sure, but for the most part, the contents are sheer joy. Smart but accessible--The New Yorker meets Dave Barry.

The best notes !!!.......2005-06-30
The best I ever played !! Very easy to play and original the film !!!!
pretty darn good.......2005-01-24
Personally, I have really enjoyed this piano book. The pieces are meant to be accompaniments for instruments such as trumpet or clarinet, but they contain enough of the melody that they can be enjoyed on their own. "Concerning Hobbits" has to be the highlight of this collection. I have been playing piano for four years and am concidered intermediate to late intermediate, and this is exactly my level. If you are not that advanced, you can pick through the melody line written above the music. There are some very neat pictures in this book too. I would reccomend this selection very highly. (I would have given it 4.5 stars, but you can't give half stars.)

Customer Reviews:
Beautifully written, one of my favourite books.......2004-02-26
I found this book in a second hand store in Sydney (Australia, where I live) about ten years ago. All I can say is I keep coming back to it and rereading it about once a year. It's chock full of anecdotal gems about famous and not-so-famous songwriters of the 20th century. To read of a young Leo Robin daring to tell Maurice Chevalier how to sing a song, or of Frank Loesser punching a soprano in the nose (and then yelling 'Forgive me') is priceless. If you have any interest in 20th century popular music, get it.
Not only are they playing our songs, they've written them........1998-04-05
What makes the collection fascinating is that much of this book is in the voices of the songwriters, or in the voices of those who knew them well. And if anyone is an expert on the lore of America's music, it's Max Wilk. The book was originally written in 1971. When it was updated 15 years later, many of the songwriters Wilk had originally interviewed were gone, so reading these chapters in the colorful voices of talents like the late Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin, Dorothy Fields, and Harry Warren, who, cigar in his mouth, told him about his three Oscars ("Ah, I use 'em for doorstops!")-- it's irreplaceable. Even Irving Berlin, reclusive and rather irascible, offered his own glimpse into the man behind all those songs. "If it's a collection of gags about the music business," said Berlin, "don't bother talking to me. I'm not a comedian." All these stories are there, plus those of other show business legends like Robert Russell Bennett, Joshua Logan, and nonagenarian P.G. Wodehouse. Taking this wealth of ingredients, Max Wilk put it all together, gave it a stir, got the mix cooking, and then sat back to let the voices take over. For all those who love the heritage of American popular music, get this book, sit back, and read about the masters. Then put on your CDs and listen again to the familiar music they wrote for us.END

Customer Reviews:
Kept referring back to chapters - invaluable source of information........2005-10-08
This is such a great book, I've read it and kept referring back for more info. Material covered here would help you no matter discipline you are from: Weather you've just completed your degree and want to get your point across to a hiring manager; or a business person who'd want to be more concise and to the point. Look no further.
proven over the long run.......2005-04-07
I first encountered this book in the late '80s. Since then, I've use the techniques from the book to write technical papers and documentation, employee reviews, published articles and winning proposals for million-dollar government contracts. I even used it to write testimony for a Congressional hearing.
The process outlined in this book is NOT a fad, and not "buzzword compliant", it's a proven, well-defined process that allows almost anyone to write like the best writers. These techniques will have you writing naturally, with clarity and focus.
These same techniques will also provide a big help in organizing your thoughts, and creating careful and insightful analysis.
For those who have trouble or anxiety about writing, having a well-defined process solves most of the problems with procrastination or "not knowing what to write, or how". This book provides that process. It simplifies the mechanics of "how" to write, so that you can focus on "what" to write, and getting your message across to the audience.
I'm glad this book is out in a new edition. I'll be buying copies for most of my technical staff, and suggesting it to my graduate students.
The best business writing reference ever.......2004-05-22
This book really cuts to the chase. It includes what you need to know for all types of business documents, and doesn't bother with things you really don't need to know to get the job done. This is perfect for those of us who are already too busy. It's helped me make my business correspondence clear, succinct, and to the point. If your work requires any writing at all, you should have this book.
Outstanding Business Writing Book.......2002-03-10
This book provided me with all the useful business-writing tips and examples needed to prepare effective and succinct business documents. I constantly refer back to it when preparing various writing projects.
I would recommend this to anyone who has to write in the business world and needs examples on how to write documents that are concise with appropriate details.
An essential and succinct reference for business writers!.......2000-04-22
I'm buying a second copy of this book - the first one was borrowed and not returned. I often re-read parts of this book.
"Write to the Top" has made a real difference in the amount of positive feedback I have received at performance review time!

Part coming-of-age story, part mind-altering manifesto on gender and sexuality, coming directly to you from the life experiences of a transsexual woman, Gender Outlaw breaks all the rules and leaves the reader forever changed.26 black-and-white illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Gender Outlaw.......2007-10-05
I so wish I had read this book at 30 years of age. I so wish everyone would read this book.
Kate Bornstein is right. There simply is no gender. Anima, animus.
Sometimes we do need to have our ideas challenged. I am happy to have had my old ideas changed by this book. It seems to have given me answers for so many vague questions I had in my mind.
Valuable book for heterosexual ppl and homosexual ppl. Valuable book for ppl.
'Trotskyist' TS.......2007-08-07
Gender Outlaw is considered a classic and a step forward. And it is, annoyingly.
A lot of her fearless theory, proto-GenderQueer, I believe is totally right on - and certainly harmonizes with my ideal of Permanent Transition. Yet Bornstein, with her conventional SRS, might not the most compelling proponent of smashing the binary chains. Like Trotsky, Bornstein has a populist (often gimmicky) style in which to place her epistemology and, like Trotsky, Bornstein is a tireless self-publicist: Just how many times does the reader need to know she appeared on the Geraldo Show?
Kinda the right book, by the wrong author.
AMAZING. .......2007-07-31
This is an amazing, amazing book. It's easy to read, engaging, and the tone is casual but the content is rich and nuanced - both accesible and intelligent. If you only read three books in your life, this should be one of them. I'm not exaggerating.
A struggle to read.......2005-09-06
The format of this book makes it real hard to read and detracts greatly from the content. Your eyes have to dart from one side of a page to the other and back again then to the middle. The content is important but on the edge of the spectrum which makes it even more difficult to read at times with the far fetched concepts. I'm not a big fan of this one.
Genderific Food For Thought.......2005-05-22
A decade ago Al Bornstein underwent genital reconstruction surgery to become Kate Bornstein and soon fell in love with a lesbian who recently had female-to-male surgery. Kate Bornstein's very existence is a defiance of gender labels so it's no wonder it should be the topic of her first book.
Bornstein, a transsexual S&M feminist, performance artist, playwright, NEA casualty, spokesperson, and talk show regular became a celebrated theorist as well with the publication of GENDER OUTLAW. This fascinating and informative account of her own experiences is also an accessible exploration of gender politics and the current bipolar gender breakdown as an oppressive class system. Drawing on numerous sources and told with frankness and humor, the book covers a great deal of territory such as the mental preparation for and the logistics of genital reconstructive surgery, her reentry into the world, her argument for gender as a social construct, the script of her art/theory play `Hidden: A Gender', and roles the transgendered have played in other cultures.
With her plays, her book, her talk show appearances and her lectures Kate Bornstein is working to break the myths and mystery of the transgendered. Her work is a true union of life and art with education and understanding as the end goal. This is a fascinating exploration of a topic mostly taken for granted in our culture. Discovering that gender is more than simply genitalia is a true revelation.

Book Description
Years before his fateful stand at the Little Bighorn, George Armstrong Custer fought in the Civil War, a bright and shiny brigadier general of volunteers in the Michigan Cavalry Brigade. Riding with Custer and his “Wolverines” was Captain James H. Kidd, who saw action extending from the raid on Richmond to Appomattox.
Riding with Custer is a rousing and vivid illustration of the tactical worth of cavalry in the army. Kidd raised his own company, engaged in more than sixty battles, rose to colonel in 1864, and after conspicuous valor in the Valley Campaign of that year succeeded Custer as commander of the Michigan Brigade. When he wrote these memoirs several decades after the war, his recollections were sharp and indelible—among them the experience of fighting with Custer at Gettysburg, Falling Waters, the Wilderness, Yellow Tavern, and Cedar Creek. He describes life on the move in all kinds of weather and terrain, the sensation of combat, the pleasure of a cup of coffee, and, besides Custer, such famous generals as Judson Kilpatrick, Phil Sheridan, and Wesley Merritt.
A reprint of the original 1908 edition, this Bison Book features a new index.
Customer Reviews:
Personal Recollections of a Cavalryman.......2002-12-13
This is a memoir with chapters written in and after the 1880's.
An interesting positivist take on the war--also interesting how politically conscious Kidd appears to have been. My general observation is that the Northern accounts seem to be more politicized, more likely to talk about politicians and political beliefs, than Southern.
Kidd started the war as captain of Troop E, 6th Michigan Cavalry, and ended up in command of the regiment. He spends a lot of time discussing recruiting and training, details fighting at Gettysburg and Williamsport, Trevilian Station, Third Winchester, et cetera. Kidd's admiration for Custer, his brigadier, is clear.
A useful account, but not an especially anecdotal or vivid one.
A judgment of Custer by a contemporary.......1999-06-25
This reprint of the classic "Recollections of a Cavalryman" is a valuable addition to the military history of the nation. It also offers a view of Custer by someone who actually served with him in combat -- extensive combat. The view of Custer that emerges is not that penned by a fawning subordinate; Colonel Kidd simply recounts the battles and activities of the Michigan Cavalry Brigade in a straightforward manner. His later controversy notwithstanding, Custer was an exemplary cavalry commander and arguably the most successful and brilliant cavalry officer on either side in the conflict. This book opens a window on the past and is an excellently written account of the brutal battles fought by our ancestors. The book also offers an unintentional balance to Custer's historical legacy. It's unintentional because at the time it was written, Custer was still considered a national hero. This book explains why he was. Read it.
Customer Reviews:
A Good Story Well Told........2004-01-21
J. H. Kidd's personal reflections read like they were written by professional. They were. He was a newspaperman. He was also a Regimental Cavalry Commander under Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer.
Kidd's war observations and his feelings for his commander make very interesting reading. Mustered in during1862, he serves with distinction in the Eastern Theater of the war. Entering as a Captain, he returns home three years later a Brevet Brigadier General. During that time he not only serves with distinction in the majority of the engagements fought by the Army of the Potomac, he participates in the Union's revitalization of its Cavalry. Easily a laughing stock in the beginning, this is the same group of men that defeat JEB Stuart at Gettysburg and kill him at Yellow Tavern.
From 1863 on the Union Cavalry equaled or exceeded its Confederate counterpart. By war's end there was no contest. This is an insider's view as to how that transformation was effected.
Book Description
In 1866, John Ryan, a 21-year-old Union Army veteran, enlisted in the new 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment. During two enlistments in the next 10 years, he took part in every action or campaign with this legendary Army unit under its celebrated commander, Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer.
With Custer, Ryan charged the village of Cheyenne Chief Black Kettle on the Washita River in November 1868 and took part in the Yellowstone Expedition of 1873 and the Black Hills Expedition of 1874. Between his Civil War service in the 28th Massachusetts Voluntary Infantry Regiment and the 7th Cavalry, Ryan fought in some 45 military engagements and saw many hard sights on those battlefields, but it was his last one he recalled as the worstthe Battle of Little Bighorn on June 25-26, 1876. First Sergeant with Company M, Ryan fought heroically in the Little Bighorn Valley and on the bluffs with the battalion under Major Marcus A. Reno. He survived this fighting, which he would talk and write about throughout the 50 years he lived after his final discharge.
More important, he penned a 600-page memoir of his military career, providing extraordinary insight into not only the great experiences of the 7th Cavalry on the Plains but also into the everyday life of the Frontier Army. For many years, Ryan's full manuscript had been missing, until it was located and purchased by author-researcher Sandy Barnard in April 2000.
Some 475 of those pages dealt with his 7th Cavalry career and are published for the first time in this work. An extraordinary and important account, this document is unlike any other written by a 7th Cavalry officer or an enlisted man. Indian wars historians, Little Bighorn battle enthusiasts and reenactors all will find much to savor in this noteworthy new classic.
Book Description
This book is about the complex relationship between fear, danger, and the law. Cass Sunstein argues that the precautionary principle is incoherent and potentially paralyzing, as risks exist on all sides of social situations and there is no 'general' precautionary principle as such. His insight into The Laws of Fear represents a major statement for the contemporary world from one of the most influential political and legal theorists writing today.
Customer Reviews:
Fear rules.......2007-09-02
Not a lawyer found the writing somewhat turgid and slow; on the other hand our decision making and valuation of life and risk is certainly not epistimic. Read just before the Black Swan which discusses risk from a different angle. For those involoved in lives with risks this is interesting reading
