Book Description
This volume of 13 essays is a contribution toward a new comprehensive understanding of art and devotion that encompasses a body of evidence drawn from social and religious history. It takes us back to late medieval and Renaissance Italy, when painted images rose to an entirely novel prominence. It is a collection of studies that examine relations between images, the faithful, and the faith, and in so doing offer glimpses of ideas and beliefs that were to have a long history. In sum, this volume provides an introduction to an important and expanding field of historical scholarship and directs the reader to a wealth of relevant sources. The contributors have provided fascinating discussions that work together to enhance our understanding of what were "visions of holiness."
Book Description
·Instruction on composing the shot and editing it digitally, keyed to outdoor subjects and outdoor conditions
·Selecting equipment for use in the field
·Illustrated in full color
A professional writer and photographer who has long chronicled his adventures as a mountaineer and wilderness traveler, James Martin is uniquely positioned to help others "gain the most from swapping chemicals for silicon." In Digital Photography Outdoors, he begins with the basics: how a digital camera works, special considerations for use in the field, and selecting the best equipment and most useful accessories for capturing outdoor action.
Martin presents the new rules of digital photography (why overexpose?) and reminds us of old rules that still apply (light and good composition remain key). He covers the fundamentals of digital editing, including selecting software tools, applying filters, creating the illusion of movement, and stitching photos together to create panoramas. It's about exploiting the advantages of digital, as well as meeting its challenges ("storing images safely becomes an obsession.") Martin also offers tips on care and maintenance of digital equipment in field conditions.

Interesting and useful.......2007-08-23
Very interesting book with several useful tips. It is focused in the "digital darkroom" processes and it becomes an interesting handbook while working with image processing software. Moreover, it gives some advices on photographic techniques specially oriented to digital cameras and their particular performance.
Excellent book for outdoors photographers........2005-08-04
This book is packed with solid information. It's really helping me take better travel pictures now that I have upgraded to a digital single lens reflex camera.

New Times In The Old South.......2002-12-19
12/18/02 Marilyn Schwartz"Southern Belle Primer".."Why Princess Margaret could Never Be a Phi Kappa Gamma" was readed 1st by me when Philadelphia had a 'rent a audio" store in its 17th & Chestnut Street area in its Center City..The audio was hilarious...I proceeded to borrow the book when at a library and borrowed "New Times In the Old South" a few years ago.."New Times In The Old South" makes me(even as a Northerner) a little bit sad after reading about the traditions in "Southern Bele Primer"....It shows what happens when someone opens the door to those without your attitudes/values and they have even worse than "influences"..just 'plain old money' as their ticket in(at least with influences they'd have to behave a little to spare their sponsors from embarassment).and how these non-southerners with 'stacks of cash" ,just for the fun of it violated the Southern traditions with gaudy extravaganza. Both books by Schwartz will leave you wanting more (They have catchy titles..'Princess Margaret's name' is what made "Southern Belle Primer" catch my interest..and they are really very small size books..hardback,the size of a paperback with 1/2 the pages of the average paperback(e.g.[printed in the USA]: Kensington Publication Corp.'s Zebra Books "Texas Lovestorm" by Linda Windsor(ISBN0821735497) has 381 pages

Dirty Poole: The Autobiography of a Gay Porn Pioneer
Wakefield Poole

Performer and filmmaker Wakefield Poole spent most of his youth in dancing schools and public toilets. As a high school boy in the 1950s, he had turned so many tricks with married men that he assumed they all came to the can for an occasional same-sex romp--and that he had to be careful to avoid his own dad on the other side of a glory hole. He soon moved to New York to work in theater, becoming acquainted with many stars, from Andy Warhol to Debbie Reynolds. It was the height of the sexual revolution; Poole was dropping acid, having orgies, and saying yes to everything. One night at the Continental Baths, his conversation with new friends was interrupted by "some broad" doing her club act next to the pool: "Guys were sitting around, in their towels, on the floor, and in straight-back chairs, laughing, clapping, and having a blast." It was Bette Midler's first appearance at the baths, and the unlikely start of her amazing career. Poole's memoir is full of such anecdotes, small but evocative, which capture the excitement of the times, but the book is centered on his role in the well-made hardcore gay porn films that are his principal achievement. Director of Boys in the Sand and Bijou, among lesser efforts, Poole helped inaugurate a new industry and promote an ideal of unashamed sex play and loving experimentation. After a brief period of minor celebrity, though, he discovered cocaine and began to lose everything he had gained, becoming not an artist, as he had always seen himself, but a pornographer and an addict. Poole's book is not especially well written, but it's a clear and unsentimental slice of gay life in the hedonistic pre-AIDS, post-Stonewall period, a voice from an almost lost generation. --Regina Marler
Book Description
Chapter One
Rolling Out the Red Carpet
New York City, 1971
I spent one of those nights you spend waiting for the alarm to go off, half worrying about not sleeping, half wanting the night to end. The wait was finally over. Peter removed his arm from under my head, touched the alarm button, and gently slipped out of bed. We'd been lovers since the summer of '69 and were comfortable with each other. We'd also been through a lot to get that way, and although we didn't know it, the fun was just beginning, especially since my first movie was opening in New York City that day.
I had publicly come out of the closet the week before. It started with a Variety preview of my movie Boys in the Sand on December 22, 1971--the publication's first-ever preview of a hard-core all-male film--and was topped off in a Sunday edition of The New York Times with a sixth of a page advertisement for the film's opening, the first gay display ad ever accepted by the Times. To this day, I don't know how we got such good placement. The ad looked classy, so maybe they just didn't read the copy. Or perhaps someone had let it slip by. I'd like to think some gay man in the advertising department had pulled some strings. If that is what happened, I'm forever grateful.
The provocative and stylish ad, a drawing by Ed Parente, depicted an attractive, mustached man in a Speedo, from his thighs up. His nipples were prominent, and a lightning bolt ran across his crotch at an angle to the top of his bathing suit. He wore a banner of shells over one shoulder, leather thongs tied around his wrists, and held a beach ball against his right hip. An art deco border framed the ad, making it quite eye-catching.
The ad appeared on the first page of the movie ads between, and of equal size to, X, Y and Zee, starring Elizabeth Taylor, and the John Cassavetes film Minnie and Moskowitz. Nicholas and Alexandra took up the top half of the page. My name appeared above the title, out there for all to see. I was proud of the film and never considered not putting my name on it. People who knew me would be intrigued and, I'd hoped, curious to see what I'd done. What good is a movie if no one sees it?

Customer Reviews:
This guy is good at everything!.......2003-11-26
Just finished reading this terrific autobiography and was compelled to review it here. SO MUCH FUN to read! Clearly Wakefield Poole is good at everything he does...dancing, directing theatre, filmmaking...and now he has proven to be a terrific writer. The first half of the book is a very entertaining account of his "legit" life, growing up and moving into the world of dance and Broadway. He knew or met everyone who was anyone at the time. The second half is the story of how he casually made the leap into making gay porn, using his real (and well-known) name. No apologies. This is the really well told story of an interesting life.
Name Dropping and Little Else.......2003-02-07
Wakefield Poole might be a good filmmaker. Certainly, by the descriptions of his films, I'd like to see a few of his movies (especially IN THE BEGINNING, a porn parody of The Bible). Maybe Mr. Poole can direct a good movie but he certainly can't write an interesting autobiography. Dirty Poole is a bothersome self-congratulatory experiment in name-dropping. The book doesn't begin to move (albeit at a snail's pace) until it's 144 pages in. Until that point, it's a recollection of Poole's days in the theater where he gushes over the celebrities that he bumps into along the way. Definitely one to miss. (ISBN: 1555835619)
Interesting Saga of Gay Porn.......2002-05-02
Poole had quite a life and he openly shares it here. From his early days as an entertainer through the years of early gay porn films - it's all here. Many interesting observations about the business and celebrity stories. The connections in showbiz are never far apart. I wonder how Kevin Bacon connects ...
Dirty Poole - Indeed!.......2000-08-17
Wanna read about LIZA, hands outstretched on Wakefield Pooles' fireplace mantle looking up at the ceiling and shouting "I Wanna Sing Like Momma", or what it was like to have sex with Rock Hudson? How about what it feels like to direct and film gayporn stars like Casey Donavan and Peter Fisk? Wildly funny scenes w/ Marlene Dietrich, Noel Coward, Carol Burnett,Tallulah Bankhead, Angela Lansbury and more. Poignant and sometimes fiery friendships w/ Stephen Sondheim, Richard Rogers, Arthur Laurents and Michael Bennett. With cameos by Barbra Streisand,Margot Fontaine and Rudulf Nuryeav, George Ballanchine,Bernadette Peters,Grace Slick, Anita Bryant, Elizabeth Dole and Richard Nixon (yes-even Nixon!) Both the Good Witch (Billie Burke) and the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) make appearances - along with a whole assortment of other witchs,(b)witchs, kings and Queens - some good, some bad, some both. Oh yeah - and then theres all that amazing, groundbreaking porn making! If any or all of the above interests you - get this book - you won't be disappointed!
Everything I wanted to know but too shy to ask........2000-08-14
Wakefield Poole pulls no punches in his honest, insightful, funny, touching, and in every way fascinating life story. You'll laugh with him, cry with him, and fall in love with him. Left me wanting more.

The Ultimate Doors Companion!.......2002-05-14
This not just a book of collection. This tells the story behind each album and each song of the Doors, what songs made up the A and B sides of a single, each of Jim's books, not to mention lists of most popular books, music and movies of each year the Doors were together from 1965-1971. I use this as a reference book for everything from doors stuff to reading lists! It's always at my fingertips. If you wanna know the story behind Jim's poetry/songs... get this book!
Book Description
There's magic in these brainteasers. Most of them play variations on the magic square, among the oldest puzzles that exist. These cubes or other shapes are made up of groups of cells, each cell containing one of a set of numbers. The set generally corresponds with the number of cells, so, for example, a five-by-five magic square would contain numbers from 1 to 25. The trick: the sum of the numbers in any one row or column (and sometimes diagonal) must be the same. It's pure mathematical beauty. Examine and attempt to figure out the workings of a "diabolic" version created by Dürer, an early variation by Lo-Shu, and variants that use colors, different shapes, and hinged tiles.

one of the best interview books ever.......2006-11-10
I found this to be one of the best interview books I have ever used. It not only offers ways to answer interview questions, it also provides examples of typical answers and why they are wrong. It is mostly geared for people involved in business fields, but it covers many questions that are asked in any interview.
this power makes the lights dim, but at least they light.......2006-05-24
Power interviews has been valuable to me in my preparations for interviewing.
As I'm leaving the military at age 26, I've never actually experienced a real job interview. I feel at least somewhat prepared, after seeing the example questions in the book.
First is a general "yay jobs" and "yay you" section-- not so great.
About half of the rest of the book is dedicated to questions. It's a good opportunity to consider the questions you have never considered, like "what's more important, salary or recognition." In the "one pager" format, the author then summarizes what the question means, offers a sample "killer answer" (very confusing at first, because to me, a killer answer is a great one...authors mean "kill your chances."), a critique of that killer answer, and then a "winner answer." The price of the book, particularly used, is probably worth that section alone.
Next follows a "megatrends" kind of analysis- ho hum, followed with more "yay you" figuring out how to leverage your absolute greatness to the snug fit of a real job with limitations.
Recommended to me by a headhunter- worth reading.
Good questions with excellent answers.......2006-02-17
There are many books on how to improve your interview technique in the market, and choosing a good one can prove to be a daunting task. Most books have good strategies and tips, and some also have good questions that are likely to come up and are worth preparing for beforehand. Few however have sample answers. The reason I've rated this book so highly is because with each question it provides two answers: a weak one and a strong one and a critique of each. That does not mean that you can just memorize the book and ace an interview, but it certainly explains what an interviewer is looking for when he asks a certain question and gives an excellent structure around which to create your own answers based on your own work history and experiences. It definitely increases your chances of success. The one aspect it does not cover in depth is which questions to ask the interviewer. If you feel you need help in that area I'd suggest "201 best questions to ask on your interview" by John Kador.
Just an okay book.......2002-10-21
Nothing exciting about this book. May be a good bed time reader if you are in the process of looking for jobs [aren't we all??? :-)]. Some common sense topics restated. But neatly written book. No complaints on that.
excellent.......2002-01-30
My sister-in-law, who interviews people for a living, took a look at this book when it came in, and pronounced it excellent. For many of us who have been in a position for a number of years, interview skills are something that most definitely does *not* come naturally. This book helps bring people like myself over the hump to feel more at home in basic interviews.

Customer Reviews:
Great book!!.......2007-04-12
If you love the series, then this is the book for you!!!
The photos are really good and you get to understand better the characters and the situations of the first three seasons.
The only thing that's missing is more photos of Brian....
GREAT READ.......2006-08-05
IF YOU LOVED TEH SHOW AS MUCH AS I DID THIS BOOK WILLL OFFER YOU MUCH INSIGHT INTO THE CHARACTERS AND MOTIVATION BEHIND THE CAMERA.
A must for lovers of the show........2006-07-18
It's all about the pictures! Lots of them and fantastic quality. This is primarily a picture book, and you might want to buy a second copy, so only one gets stained with drool.
The written content is good, but nothing new here, in fact any good fan knows all of this and more. However, there are some great character insights with perspectives from the actors, producers & writers, as well as episode synopses.
The one disappointment is that this book covers seasons 1-3 only. But die hards like me would rush out for volume II should it ever come.
QAF - The Book.......2006-07-14
Interesting for the back-stories on episodes. Great pictures, fun to read and browse through, especially after re-watching a season or an episode.
Book in good condition........2005-10-03
Took a little longer than expected to arrive, but packaged securely and in good shape, thanks.

Once there was a nice young hen that we will call Mrs. Feathertop. She was a hen of most excellent family, being a direct descendant of the Bolton Grays, and as pretty a young fowl as you could wish to see of a summer's day. She was, moreover, as fortunately situated in life as it was possible for a hen to be. She was bought by young Master Fred Little John, with four or five family connections of hers, and a lively young cock, who was held to be as brisk a scratcher and as capable a head of a family as any half-dozen sensible hens could desire.

ASIN: 0521677734 |
Book Description
The violence following the break-up of the former Yugoslavia has lasted for more than a decade and continues to mark the region. This volume analyses the causes of the conflict and describes its course from the onset of war in Croatia to intervention in Kosovo. The book concentrates on four key transformations: the demise of Yugoslavia and the creation of new states; the importance of nationalist ideologies in the preparation of war and their subsequent decline in the post conflict era; the role of international actors as policy makers, implementing agencies, and arbiters; and the process of democratization and integration into European structures. With contributions from some of the world's leading scholars of the Balkans and personal accounts from journalists, diplomats, and civil servants drawing upon their own experiences of war and transition, War and Change in the Balkans provides an unparalleled insight into contemporary European history.

Useful Snapshot of Conflict in the Balkans.......2006-12-15
I was particularly pleased when this volume went to press as I direct a summer program on Conflict in the Balkans so naturally keep my eyes wide open for any texts that may be useful for my university students. This book certainly fits their needs and I intend to make it required reading.
20 chapters in just over 200 pages gives a good indication of the brevity of most. Yet this is appropriate for anyone (student or otherwise) looking for a snapshot of the region and its recent problems rather than detailed studies of specific issues. Contributors come from a variety of fields including academia, diplomacy, NGOs, journalism and law. Their nationalities are also quite diverse. End result? Good mix of perspectives that help the reader examine and dissect supposedly 'common knowledge' about the causes and consequences of conflict in the former Yugoslavia.
The last quarter of the book looks at the near neighbours and their practice and policies toward the former Yugoslavia, which I found useful.
Overall very good.
Book Description
In this book, Chomsky builds a larger understanding of our educational needs, starting with the changing role of schools today, yet broadening our view toward new models of public education for citizenship.
Customer Reviews:
I like Chomsky, but this book is a swindle.......2003-11-13
I should say that I'm a fan of Chomsky's logical approach to political and historical criticism, but I'm afraid the title of this book is misleading. The book claims to be Noam Chomsky's view of education, but only 21 pages (out of 188) focus on Chomsky's ideas regarding education, and even that portion is merely a transcript of an interview in which Chomsky talks for about 16 pages. The rest of the book gives a basic overview of Chomsky's ideas on propaganda. That would be fine if the book was called 'Chomsky on Propaganda, with some notes on Mis-Education', but it isn't.
At a list price of over twenty dollars, I find this book to be overpriced. Chomsky's books are never cheap (and are often beyond the budget of many who might find Chomsky's ideas interesting), but this one is far too expensive considering what the title led me to believe it was.

Simply Great.......2002-08-11
In On Mis-Education, the noted activist and scholar Noam Chomsky puts forth a well reasoned analysis of the failure of public eduction in America. Consequently, it should come as no surprise that many americans do not even know how many states are in the United States, or even who their senator or even president is (not that the last matters very much). On the contrary these same citizens can tell you countless bits of information on even the most obscure of Hollywood personalities. The failure that this represents, however, is not completely the fault of the people themselves, although they do bear a vurden for their own lack of intellectual curiosity, it is primarily due to the conserted and intense barage of mindless drivel constantly transmited through our media outlests and schools. In this era of information, TV is often seen as the fountain of truth and as the previous review shows, this is not an all too uncommon thing. Fortunately for us, Chomsky lays it all out and exposes how the media shapes what passes for knowledge in today's world, which comes down to a simple equation of profit and cost.
Misleading title.......2001-10-13
Chomsky and Macedo should have known better: the title of their book is misleading. It should of been titled "Chomsky on Mis-Political Education." I don't have a problem with Chomsky's political analysis, but I was expecting him to talk more about the public and private school system in this country. He only does this in the first chapter, and then rest of this short book focuses on what Chomsky knows best: domestic and international politics. A better book on this subject is "Educating the 'Right' Way: Markets, Standards, God, and Inequality," by Micheal W. Apple.
It wasn't about education.......2001-07-27
I wish I could have given this book more stars. I admire Chomsky on many different levels and I was very excited to see this book. I am a teacher as is my husband and we feel there are a lot of anti-teacher, anti-public education, anti-students, etc. attitudes facing us, and we feel many are instigated by the corporate attack on the U.S. We thought, "Great! If there is anyone who can break these issues down and do them justice, it's Chomsky." Unfortunately, like the previous reviews stated, he relied on what he knows best which, as always, is well-argued and very peruasive. Yet, education in the U.S. didn't really fit into the big picture. We are disappointed that we bought a book that we have read before (a pastiche of earlier books). I am very let down that there was no exploration of the current state of education. Any analysis of U.S. education would have been nice. The title is deceptive and I am hurt that he didn't write about an issue that hits close to home for me.
