Book Description
The first edition of
The Animation Book, published in 1979, became the authoritative guide to making animated movies. Now, as we enter the twenty-first century, the explosion in computer technology has created a corresponding boom in animation. Using desktop hardware and software, animators can easily produce high-quality, high-artistry animation and mix the aesthetics of traditional cel animation with dazzling 3-D effects. Kit Laybourne's digital revision to The Animation Book brings you to the cutting edge of animation technology. Richly illustrated with frame-grabs, production stills, and diagrams, this volume shares Kit's infectious enthusiasm for the limitless possibilities of today's hybrid techniques, and it provides beginning animators with all the information they need to jump in and start their own animation projects. More advanced animators will find The Animation Book to be an invaluable resource with detailed descriptions of filmmaking gear, computer hardware and software, art supplies, plus Internet and other resources.
Using an innovative case-study approach, Kit deconstructs how a range of digital projects were carried out at some of today's hottest animation studios, including Wildbrain, Blue Sky, Protozoa, Fantome, Broderbund, Nicktoons, and Klasky Csupo. These step-by-step studies show how desktop animators can follow the same creative process in their own films.

Perfect Reference.......2007-08-02
If there was ever a 'textbook' for learning animation, this is it. I have several books on animation production, from cell to 3D, and this on the pretty much the backbone of them all. I am not a professional animator, though I wish I was. This book provides a plethora of reference films for various styles of animation (it's nice to have a somewhat comprehensive list of styles) and suggestions for production. Though, it does lean more towards the artistry of animation, rather than digital production techniques to turn a quick buck.
I recommend this book as a primer for anyone who is passionate about animation as an art, hobby, or the first step in building an animation production house from scratch.
I Really Need to get the New Edition..........2006-01-06
I just about wore out my copy of the original edition of this book years ago; i never got far into *doing* animation, but it really helped me to *understand* what i was seeing on the screen (as well as serving as a source of recommendations as to Good Things to look out for...)
While this may not be quite the essential text for asiring animators that Will Eisner's "Comics and Sequential Art" (q.v.) is for would-be comics pros, it is a Very Good overview of the field as a whole, from techniques to materials to the creative aspects.
There is, admittedly, not sufficient detail on any one subject to take one to a true professional level, but there is sufficient detail and commentary to let the tyro make a beginning in almost any aspect of animation (within one's financial limitations, anyway -- while costs are rather less now than they were in the day when film was the sole practical medium of choice, some aspects of animation do cost more than others to do) nd work at it enough to get an idea as to whether that's what she wants to do.
And remember -- you might not intend to make animation your life's work; but Mike Jittlov was an accounting major who took an animation course because he needed an elective and it fit his schedule. The film he made for that course won him an Oscar nomination...
Anything can happen, and this book is a good place to check it out if you think animation might be one of the "anythings" you'd like to happen to you.
GREAT INTRODUCTION TO ANIMATION TECHNIQUES.......2004-09-16
This is a great book for both students of animation and anyone out there who just wants to know more about that thing called animation. Laybourne is very easy to read and goes step-by-step through various animation processes in such an accessible way that its almost entertaining.
If you have a serious interest or just a passing interest, this is a great book!
Good introduction to Animation.......2003-11-04
I am using this book for background info for an animation unit I teach with my graphics students. It gives you a good overview of many different animation techniques. It answered a lot of my questions. This book is a good start, but you might also want to check out animation by preston blair, and Animation from script to screen by Shamus Culhane. Shamus will make an animator out of you by the end of his book.
Very general, not enough updated info.......2002-11-07
Although it is almost impossible for a book to provide the most up-to-date info, this book tries it's best. I really think that an animation book should be specified (ie 2d, stop-motion, 3d, etc) in order to not "cheat" the reader out of more intense knowledge. However, if a broad introduction is what you seek, then this book will work (but there are less expensive books that will do just the same).

Funny, but not really for kids ..........2007-03-01
I bought this book based on my experience with other books in this series, particularly Big Book for Moms and Big Book for Grandmothers. This book is full of cute and funny sayings, BUUUUUT, there are some pretty racy passages that were not suitable for my 10 year old. Beware of giving this to a child if you aren't ready to explain a lot of sex jokes.

Book Description
The Power to Get In deals with the single most common and frustrating problem for anyone who's in business, a job transition, or a move back into the work force: the problem of gaining access to the correct audience. Today, no other skill is as directly connected to your ability to earn a living as the skill of getting in to see the right people. Michael Boylan's step-by-step system, The Circle of Leverage, will help you cut through bureaucracy, identify the people you most need to see, and get in their doors. Anyone with something to sell, abilities to offer, or ideas to present will find this book invaluable.
Customer Reviews:
OK - There are better titles.......2007-07-08
This book is OK but not special. If you are a student of selling and prospecting is a big part of your job it is a decent addition to your library but something less than a must have title. If you own it you may find a nugget or two that will help you.
The best book on getting heard on a favorable basis high up the food chain in B2B sales is: "Value Forward Selling."
That being said this book will have some value for you.
Simply put, here's EXACTLY why this method works..........2007-05-07
Let's cut to the chase...
Get this book for only ONE reason -- the method WORKS because of the way executives THINK + ACT.
They only do that which is most likely to SAVE THEIR OWN SKIN.
They don't care about being right -- but they are PETRIFIED of being wrong.
It is much safer for them to say NO to incoming new ideas (read: YOU).
They can never be wrong if they simply zap all incoming new ideas (you).
This method turns all that around!!!
The so-called Circle of Leverage involves letting SEVERAL execs (in the company you are targeting) know that you have an incoming new idea.
AND letting each of those execs know that you have also notified the OTHER execs (in that same company).
AND telling all of them about all the OTHER companies you are ALSO notifying.
Now you are playing on each exec's FEARS about being WRONG.
Now each exec CANNOT ignore you, because, if they do, and they are WRONG for ignoring you (your incoming new idea is a winner), they KNOW that every OTHER exec will ALSO know about their MISTAKE.
Also, what if ANOTHER company grabs your new incoming idea? -- That also could make them WRONG for ignoring you.
This method changes their response from "I must NOT respond" to "I MUST respond!"
I used it recently to send a proposal to all the big pharma companies. I did get turned down -- but.... here's the thing -- the rejections all came 6 weeks later. Not immediate, form-letter rejections (as would normally be the case).
I'm convinced that, by using this method, the execs HAD to take the time to seriously consider my proposal before responding.
They could not RISK just ignoring my proposal!
Again, execs are not concerned with being right -- they only act out of FEAR of being WRONG.
GET THIS BOOK!
-- TW
"Open Sesame".......2006-04-16
You just got access to your dream opportunity. You made it. You just popped open the door with your own "Open Sesame" secret (though you're no thief). Do you shudder to think what life would be like if you hadn't gotten in?
Believe it-getting the access you need really is that important. At some point (many points) in your career(s), you're going to need to get in front of that person, group, etc. That's the point from which all your skills, knowledge, and brilliant ideas will germinate. If you can't get the access you need, none of that other stuff will matter.
That's why this book is so valuable.
Michael presents a detailed, methodical approach to getting the audience you need: The Circle of Leverage. It's a step-by-step approach that relies on risk-taking and perseverance. The results might be magical, but the process is real. He shows you why you've been shut out in the past (Section One), why you need to take a top-down approach (pp. 45-52), and a realistic discussion of things you can and can't control (pp. 114-122).
The Circle of Leverage uses ten preparation steps (each of which is discussed in a detailed chapter in Section Three) and five execution steps (a detailed chapter on each in Section Four). The remaining two sections take you beyond the meat-and-potatoes (which are very impressive in their own rights). Chapter 33 gives you guidance on what to do once you're in, and Chapter 34 provides real-world context with sample scenarios and case histories.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who sells, because we can all benefit from learning and applying The Circle of Leverage.
Thought prevoking.......2004-04-15
Michael has put some common thoughts on paper, but has drilled down to their importance inthe sales process. If you go into this with the intention of gaining a leson to add to you collection of resources, you will find this very helpful. If you are looking for the golden egg, sorry but look again.
There is no silver lining in the sales process, but with some sound advice you can dramatically increase your effectiveness which equalls more closed deals. This book gives some very sound advise as to some of the obsticle we as salespeople all face and a means of overcoming them.
I highly recomend this for anyone interested in improving their chances of closing that next deal.
Outstanding augmentation for existing sales processes.......2003-12-25
I am a VP Sales for a technology firm and I only recently read this book. I was so impressed with the innovative material I flew to MN to meet the author! Despite what the negative reviewers have said, this book is NOT a sales manual. It IS a manual for obtaining access. It is an excellent precursor to an existing sales process, but the sales process already needs to be in place. The author uses the term "bolt-on" addition which is a very good visual depiction of how this tool should be used.
Any good executive can tell you how difficult it is to be seen at the appropriate levels. More and more, callers and visitors are sloughed off to the next lower level, and if the caller doesn't have a compelling reason to stay at the executive level, they will invariably continue to be pushed down lower and lower until they are speaking with the lowliest of the non-decision makers, a "recommender." Horrors!
Don't sell this book short. "Getting In" is a master treatise on how to develop and keep access at the C-level. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
Havana . . . lilting rumbas, café con leche, sultry sea breezes. Sparkling white beaches by day, scintillating nightclubs after dark. This sophisticated, international capital was the crown jewel of an island paradise-until the idealism that fed the Cuban Revolution yielded a nightmare of soul-crushing dictatorship. Adios, Havana is a true account of romance and peril, adventure and patriotism. Fueled by love-love of family, of country, and of each other-a young couple must face the most wrenching of choices: remain in the country they cherish, lose the wealth and position their families strove for generations to attain, and watch their children grow up impoverished under a terrifying regime; or risk escaping with no money or possessions and leave behind all they have ever known to begin a new life in a strange land. A legacy to future generations, this memoir is intended to remind readers of the fragility of freedom . . . to describe the disintegration of a prosperous civilized society and offer counsel on how to prevent a similar catastrophe from happening in America . . . and to show how and why penniless refugees flourish in the land of the free-why anyone who resists oppression would be driven to tell his beloved homeland, Adios.
Customer Reviews:
Not literature.......2007-10-02
This book was recommended based on my Amazon reading and buying habits. Not sure why, though. It appears to be a self-published book...nice for the author's relatives or for people who fled Cuba. As literature, though, it just doesn't stack up. I'm disappointed that it was recommended via Amazon and will be more skeptical of those recommendations in the future.
Very Familiar.......2007-08-09
This book is a joy. Mr. Rodriguez' voice is loud and clear Cuban. In this book I reheard my mother's story. Thank You!!
An Inside look at Cuba.......2006-05-12
Before he and his wife flee Communist Cuba in the 60's for American freedom, the author paints vivid pictures of his beloved land and lifestye before and at the beginning of Castro's dictatorship.
Arriving in Miami, FL, they're eventually "adopted" by a Colorado church where they relocate to find housing and jobs. Because of their skills and eagerness to work hard, they become contributors to American society and earn US citizenship.
While the US is not perfect, this book helps me appreciate our various freedoms, and God's love expressed through good people. I recommend this book to those who take our democracy for granted.

A clear voice emerging.......2006-05-07
At a time when the Latin immigration experience is on everyone's mind and newspaper page, Andrew Rodriguez tells the story of his flight from Cuba in a clear, undecorated voice that rings true to the story. Immigrants come to America for many reasons, and Rodriguez tells a very personal story that might serve to educate a lot of people about why America is such a beacon.
Interested in Cuba and its people? . . . read this book........2006-02-26

I specialize in reviewing Print-On-Demand (POD) published books, primarily because many reviewers in the "traditional book reviewing community" are not interested in them-regardless of how well-written or engaging. There is a strong resistance within this community, and a POD author would be fortunate, indeed, to receive any acknowledgment to his/her query-they simply ignore you. This, I'm certain, will change in time . . . helped along by quality, well-written, and touching memoirs such as this one.
I quote from the back cover: "Adios, Havana is a true account of romance and peril, adventure and patriotism. Fueled by love-love of family, of country, and of each other-a young couple must face the most wrenching of choices: remain in the country they cherish, lose the wealth and position their families strove for generations to attain, and watch their children grow up impoverished under a terrifying regime; or risk escaping with no money or possessions and leave behind all they have ever know to begin a new life in a strange land.
A legacy to future generations, this memoir is intended to remind readers of the fragility of freedom . . . to describe the disintegration of a prosperous civilized society and offer counsel on how to prevent a similar catastrophe from happening in America . . . and to show how and why penniless refugees flourish in the land of the free-why anyone who resists oppression would be driven to tell his beloved homeland, Adios." I could not have said it better.
The extraordinary beauty of Cuba and the Cuban culture, prior to Castro, come to life through this book, as do the difficult decisions these successful families had to make and the realities of being Cuban refugees in Little Havana, USA. The generosity of the American people to help . . . also comes to life. Andy and Margarita's beautiful love story weaves its way through history and binds it all together.
This book is well-written, well-edited, compelling and sensitive. The author has an educated vocabulary, uses unique similes and metaphors, and is so kind as to translate the Spanish phrases he uses throughout. In addition to this memoir, Andrew J. Rodriquez has authored The Teleportation of an American Teenager.

the black side of the Lost Cause.......2007-09-03
Initially published in 1924, Albert B. Moore's "Conscription and Conflict in the Confederacy" deserved the excellent reprint performed by the University of South Carolina Press. After the war, the South had to distort the truth to ennoble its defeat because the North did not need to explain its victory. For more than 140 years, the "Sons of Confederate Veterans" have not ceased to glorify the honor of the Confederate soldiers while shoving in the background the necrosis of their cause. Of all the modern wars, the Confederate army counted the most deserters (40% in 1863, 51% in 1864 and 55.5% in 1865). It is on this subject that a book such as "Conscription and Conflict in the Confederacy" is decisive because it does not seek to flatter the pride of a slave oligarchy that was severely thrashed. This work and that of Ella Lonn "Desertion during the Civil War" clearly points out the exhaustion - totally justified - of the Confederate soldier sacrificing himself for "a rich man's war and a poor man's fight". The work of Albert B. Moore destroys many myths, in particular that pertaining to the honor of the Southern soldier, and it depicts the war as it really was and not like the descendants of those who received a good bashing would like it to be.

A classic.......2002-12-25
Albert Burton Moore in his 45-year teaching career was the embodiment of a Southern scholar-gentleman. Born and raised in Alabama, he was a descendant of Confederate veterans, and he wrote and taught at a time when many of them were yet alive. His teaching career, except for four years in Iowa, was entirely in the South (as a footnote, he also served two terms as president of the NCAA).
"Conscription and Conflict in the Confederacy" did not have to be an interesting book, but it is one because Moore's writing style is assured, easy, understated. He has a keen eye for the pithiest quotes from his sources. And he knows his Latin. His Southerners regarded their battlefield victories with sincere "gratulation," and Moore cannot bring himself to write "conscripted" when he knows Cicero would only have approved "conscribed."
Moore's book is still valued by historians for both parts of its title. The 1996 introduction to the University of South Carolina edition rightly praises the book as still the fundamental introduction to Confederate conscription, as well as a groundbreaking exploration of internal divisions in the CSA. That was a topic which had been given short shrift by the Lost Cause version of the Civil War which prevailed in America at that time.
Moore views Southern conscription as a flawed, but ultimately successful system that kept the Confederacy's will to fight for independence focused in an effective military effort for four hard years. He finds no inherent shame to the Confederate cause in the mere fact of conscription. "President Davis told the Mississippi legislature that there was no more reason to expect voluntary service in the army than voluntary labor upon the public roads or the voluntary payment of taxes," he writes.
Yet he appreciates the challenge of applying a system of compulsory service "among a proud and free people." He writes that the South's general public was "gradually reconciled" to the idea, though "strong opposition" remained.
His assumption that secession was principally about states' rights is no longer shared by most historians. But because Moore felt the South's cause was states' rights, the "conflict" in the book's title is largely that between Davis' central government and state authorities, notably the states'-rights governors Brown and Vance.
The book avoids statistics as much as possible, and the author always alerts his reader, if he delves into numbers, that all the figures are estimates at best, that they are often in dispute, and that surviving Confederate records are very incomplete.
Moore does not compare Southern conscription with the North's parallel messy venture in it, and he makes no attempt to place the CSA's experience in the flow of military history. This is, to me, a serious oversight.

The Words Of The Sage Of Montecello.......2004-06-02
"The Portable Jefferson" consists of a vast collection of Jefferson's works. It provides us with valuable insights into his mind and his world.
The longest entry is "Notes on the State of Virginia". It provides a multifaceted assessment of the Virginia known by Jefferson. Politics, the economy, topography, populations, flora and fauna are all included in this report. I read with particular interest the reports on areas of French settlement in what is now Illinois, areas in which my ancestors were living but to which Jefferson had never traveled and about which he had to have learned from the reports of others. Many insights into the Virginia of his day are very interesting.
Jefferson's July, 1774 tome on "A Summary View Of The Rights of British America" give a preview of America's grievances on the eve of the Revolution.
The next segment consists of Jefferson's public papers and addresses. Some are well known, such as the Declaration of Independence, while others are obscure, but often no less interesting.
The last segment of the book consists of many private letters written to a host of correspondents. Some of these are rather mundane matters of personal interest, while others are occasions for expositions of political views and comments on the news of the day. I found particularly interesting his comments on developments in France during its Revolution.
I have long had an interest in Jefferson. This book enables the reader to see him in new and deeper lights. His thought, the breath of his interests and his genius shine on the pages of his book. This is a book to read and then keep handy for reference.
