Book Description
In the 1980s, composer and pianist Edvard Lieber became the friend and confidant of Willem and Elaine de Kooning. Now, drawing on the stories they shared with him, Lieber has created an intimate anecdotal portrait of Willem de Kooning (1904-1997) over the decades.
From the rise of Action Painting in New York City to raucous parties in East Hampton, Long Island, this lively chronicle is packed with telling details that shed new light on Abstract Expressionism-and debunk many de Kooning myths. We get a fresh look at Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Arshile Gorky, and other celebrated de Kooning friends. And we get a firsthand portrait of Willem near the end of his life-and see a still vital artist working with undiminished power.
Illustrated throughout with Lieber's candid photographs, this book offers a unique look at an enigmatic artist.
98 illustrations, 71 in full color, 9 x 9"
EDVARD LIEBER, a composer, concert pianist, painter, and filmmaker, teaches at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He was Willem de Kooning's secretary and curator from 1987 to 1989, and the co-executor of Elaine de Kooning's estate.
Customer Reviews:
Gentle Giant.......2006-04-07
A bluntly honest book of the last decade of De Kooning and his paintings. The author's analysis tells of the decline of De Kooning's mental facualities and how others coaxed him into continuing his painting, to the point of choosing the colors or his palette and drawing the design on the canvas. It reports that his work of the late 80's might stretch the credibility of his own creative integrity.
His paintings during the early 80's challenge our previous concepts of De Kooning's paintings and the book helps expand our appreciation of this gentle giant of art. The book is sad but a also a reaffirmation of the contributions of a genius at any age.
Best On de Kooning.......2005-02-27
This isn't just a book about Willem de Kooning, it IS de Kooning - still the best book on him and his milieu!
Timeless and Enthralling!.......2001-05-08
Gorgeous photographs and reproductions of de Kooning's last paintings make this by far the most compelling book on the artist and his period. Anyone who thinks de Kooning died with a whimper should consider this book: it eviscerates the idea that the artist's last works were weak and empty. Over fifteen paintings may be seen in a tumultuous new style executed after his last known paintings, attesting to de Kooning's artistic genius triumphing over speculation and theory.
A Classic.......2000-11-07
Among the most original documents on any artist in history, this compressed volume is multidimensional in its richness and authenticity. In the form of stories culled from conversations the author had with Willem and Elaine de Kooning, the book emerges as a de Kooning autobiography and a compelling synthesis of one of the great periods in twentieth-century American art.
From the opening lines, the reader is irresistibly drawn into de Kooning's life as he hides in a ship and steals away from Holland to America, befriends numerous artists in New York such as Arshile Gorky, Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, and John Cage, struggles to evolve his own style of painting, and ultimately contributes to the evolution of abstract expressionism as one of its major figures. In addition, vivid footnotes offer thumbnails on the Cedar Bar, WPA, New York cafeterias, the Club, Black Mountain College, de Kooning's family, floor plans of de Kooning's East Hampton studio, and numerous other subjects. Astonishingly, nearly all of the information is new - untainted by historical interpretation - with hundreds of facts corrected in the artist's own words and substantiated by the author's meticulous research. The result is an encounter with de Kooning himself.
While the book's title refers to the de Koonings reminiscing, it also alludes to the nearly one hundred photographs taken by the author in de Kooning's studio. Brilliantly composed, each of the images is a surprise, and the chemistry between Lieber and de Kooning is immediate, complex, and richly-hued. There are deeply-moving portraits, charming vignettes, discerning studio views, studies of the artist at work, and - remarkably - nearly two dozen of de Kooning's last paintings in a bold, new, complex style, previously hidden from the world.
A MUST READ!.......2000-06-04
Unlike most artist biographies which are written by curators, scholars or critics (who often force the reader to conform to their predisposed ideas) this book lets DeKooning speak for himself. DeKooning is not exploited or demeaned as in many kiss and tell books, instead what is revealed is an insightful portrait written by a close friend and confidant.
The text spans DeKooning's lifetime and is chock full of new information. Having read this book I now understand and know more about DeKooning, his art, his friends, and his milieu.
The photographs are equally enthralling. Portraits of the artist, photographs of him working, photographs of the studio, and photographs of the finished paintings all reveal an individual in his artistic prime. Most extraordinary are the ravishing color photographs of the late 1980's paintings-paintings that have been dismissed by many art historians and critics as the work of an "ailing artist". Anyone who sees these photographs (reproduced here for the first time) surely will be as moved by their beauty and intensity as I was.
On the whole, this exemplary achievement deserves a place in the library of all who appreciate art.

business photography.......2007-08-31
After reading the book through one time I see all the mistakes I am currently and in haste fixing. A second reading of the book convinced me that I had made a terrific purchase for my business and personal life.
Starting a Photo Business.......2007-02-09
This is the best book I have found yet on starting your own photography business. It is incredibly helpful. He is funny and down to earth and talks about how he runs his business and then gives other ideas of ways to do it.
Interesting, but not that helpful.......2006-01-04
Hi points - Interesting, readable, good suggestions and examples on how to transition from a "9 to 5" job to independent photographer.
Low points - Over emphasis on film aspects (non-digital) of running a business (setting up a dark room and lab...), computer section so basic it's almost humorous, no review of digital tools such as PhotoShop or Paint Shop Pro.
The general information is good for those in the dreaming stage. I suggest you find it at your local library, (sorry Amazon) because it's not something you'll go back to over and over. Mr. Oberrecht's detailed use of a paper document and bookeeping system is excruciating. It seems he views computers as a necessary evil instead of the powerfull tool they can be.
As someone who is seriously considering making this move, I was disappointed.
Present for my photographer son.......2005-10-01
I gave the book to my son, a recent college graduate, who really likes it.
getting started.......2005-09-29
Running a home based business is going from just a dream to a reality. This book helped me start on the right track and stay there. I will recommend it to others.

Book Description
Unimaginable future technology alongside an ancient samurai code. A universe populated with bizarre lifeforms divided into warring clans. Space Usagi is the descendent of the 17th-century samurai, Miyamoto Usagi, and is the hero of his clan. Space Usagi collects all three miniseries previously published by Dark Horse and Mirage. Death and Honor tells of the fall of the Shiroshi star sytem, White Star Rising chronicles a band of samurai as they attempt to retake their system, and Warrior has Usagi on the trail of the abductor of his lord. Also featured are two short stories, including an encounter with the original Usagi Yojimbo.
Customer Reviews:
This book is awesome!.......2000-04-09
Space Usagi ROCKS! If you like Usagi Yojimbo, get this book! This book is good, But not as good as Usagi Yojimbo:Daisho because this book takes place in the future.
Another excellent collection of Stan Sakai's work.......1999-12-21
Even if you're not a fan of Stan Sakai's Usagi Yoyimbo, you can't go wrong with this excellent collection of his "Space Usagi" issues. Stan hasn't won the Eisner award for nothing, and once again he displays his talent for story and characters. If you are already familiar with his work, you will enjoy it even more. In today's comic book (or graphic novel, if you really insist) market, where there are so many new issues with nothing beyond some occasional good color illustrations, it's very refreshing to see how entertaining a story illustrated in black-and-white can still be when proper respect is given to the characters and the audience. Enjoy!

Book Description
This book surveys Shakespeare's comedies, charting the influence upon them of the ancient playwrights, Plautus and Terence. Robert Miola analyses these sources, and places the comedies in their Renaissance context, as well as in the larger context of European theatre. Discovering new indebtedness, and discerning new patterns in previously attested borrowings, Shakespeare and Classical Comedy presents an integrated and comprehensive assessment of the complex interactions of the Classical, Shakesparian, and other Renaissance theatres. Robert Miola re-evaluates Plautus and Terence in the light of the Greek antecedents, and gives special attention to Renaissance translations and commentaries, Italian theorists, and playwrights, as well as contemporary dramtist such as Middleton, Joson, Heywood, and Chapman. Four broad catergories organize the discussion - New Comedic errors, intrigue, alazoneia, and romance - and each is illustrated by illuminating readings of individual Shakespearian plays. The author keeps in view Shakespeare's eclecticism, his habit of combining disparate sources and traditions, as well as the rich history of literary criticism and theatrical interpretation. The book concludes by discussing the presence of New Comedy in tragedy, in Hamlet and King Lear. Robert Miola's thoroughly researched book ranges over a vast amount of European drama, from Aristophanes to Beckett and Ionesco. It makes an important contribution to our understanding not only of Shakespeare and of his foremost antecedents, but also of his artistry and achievement.

Nothing Happens: Chantal Akerman's Hyperrealist Everyday
ASIN: 0809325136 |
Book Description
Considered to be one of the most influential auteurs in French cinema today, Chantal Akerman has had a profound impact on both feminist filmmaking discourse and avant-garde film. She has shown herself to be an uncompromising and dedicated practitioner of the cinematic arts in works such as I…You…He…She (Je tu il elle,1974); Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975); Meetings with Anna (Les Rendez-vous d’Anna,1978); American Stories/Food, Family, and Philosophy (Histoires d’Amérique,1989); and From the East (D’Est,1993). Akerman has continued to create new and unexpected films that explore ideas about image, gaze, space, performance, and narration.
This collection of essays edited by Gwendolyn Audrey Foster assesses Akerman’s wide-ranging oeuvre, particularly her exploration of identity and memory, and considers her development as an artist and as a social force. Along with a detailed filmography and bibliography, both compiled by Foster, ten of the key figures in contemporary feminist moving-image discourse explore the themes with which Akerman is preoccupied: sexuality and lesbian identity, subjectivity, alterity, quotidian reality, the mother-daughter relationship, and Jewish diasporic identity.
The contributors include Maureen Turim, Sandy Flitterman-Lewis, Jennifer M. Barker, Ivone Margulies, Catherine Fowler, Janet Bergstrom, Ginette Vincendeau, Gwendolyn Audrey Foster, Judith Mayne, and Kristine Butler.
Originally published in the United Kingdom by Flicks Books, this marks the first United States edition of Identity and Memory: The Films of Chantal Akerman.

Book Description
Heinrich Schenker's theoretical and analytical method occupies a central (and often troubling) position in modern Anglo-American musical studies. His writings claim to resubstantiate the unique artistic presence of the canonic work, and reject those disciplines, such as psychoacoustics and systematic musicology, which derive from the natural sciences. This book rereads Schenker's project as an attempt to reconstruct music theory as a discipline against the background of the new empirical musical sciences of the later nineteenth century, such as the psychological and historical investigations of music.

Book Description
Over the past two decades, business innovator Vivek Ranadive has become globally renowned for pioneering "real-time" business. TIBCO, the company Ranadive founded in 1985, has worked with more than 2,000 organizations to improve their agility and increase enterprise-wide performance.
Now, in The Power to Predict, Ranadivé forecasts the next step in achieving breakthrough business success--predictive business. The Power to Predict branches off from overexposed Silicon Valley high-tech names to show the impact of predictive business on mainstream companies from Procter & Gamble to Harrah's, Gallo, and others. Staggering in its implications, this transformative book reveals how entities can break new ground--and gain fresh competitive advantage--in the ongoing quest to:
- Anticipate customers' needs
- Create wholly new opportunities
- Predict and sidestep unwelcome "surprises"
Customer Reviews:
Well written overview of automated business.......2007-08-29
Overall I liked the book - it was readable and well-written. It is a little Tibco-centric and seemed to be written before Vivek had many examples of the kinds of businesses he discusses - otherwise it would get 5 stars.
Vivek introduces the pressures in the business world pushing companies to be both real-time and increasingly predictive and how a real-time, predictive business can be more successful. This section is the best part of the book, laying out a nice case for change. His set of chapters on specific industries- financial services, telco, logistics, retail and consumer goods, healthcare, energy, and the military are discussed - is much weaker. There is too much on what is forcing change in those industries and not enough on how organizations in those industries can and have changed into real-time, predictive businesses. He ends with some discussion of how to get your business ready for predictive and a little bit of future gazing.
Although he is very focused on the event sense and respond part of this kind of business, all his examples have also automated decisions and are actively managing them. Indeed it is largely through these automated decisions that his examples apply predictive analytics. Many of the examples overlap with those in Competing on Analytics: The New Science of Winning, where the analytics in question are being used as part of deciding how to respond to events. He does not go into enough detail on either the event-processing side (try The Power of Events: An Introduction to Complex Event Processing in Distributed Enterprise Systems instead) or decision automation side (try Smart Enough Systems: How to Deliver Competitive Advantage by Automating Hidden Decisions) but the book would certainly help you articulate the value of the kind of changes he discusses.
Shameless marketing.......2006-08-08
Shallow veneer of "why" overlayed with "my company" and "my software" Sad.
A great read.......2006-03-04
I read a lot of business books for my MBA and for work. Most are theoretical and difficult to understand how the concepts are being applied. The Power to Predict was refreshing as it gives an exec-level perspective of the business landscape, changes that have occurred over the past few years, and a look ahead. Each chapter has real world examples that gave me an overview of a wide variety of industries.
The other thing I really liked about this book is that it was a quick read and very comprehensible.

Book Description
A longtime investigative journalist uncovers one of the great untold stories of twentieth–century international intrigue, and the secrets it has held 㟵ntil now.
Shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis and Bobby Kennedy, two of the world's richest and most powerful men, disliked one another from the moment they first met. Over several decades, their intense mutual hatred only grew, as did their desire to compete for the affections of Jackie, the keeper of the Camelot flame.
Now, this shocking work by seasoned investigative journalist Peter Evans reveals the culmination of the Kennedy–Onassis–Kennedy love triangle: Onassis was at the heart of the plot to kill Bobby Kennedy. Nemesis meticulously traces Onassis's trail – his connections, the way that he financed the assassination – and includes a confession kept secret for three decades. With its deeply nuanced portraits of the major figures and events that shaped an era, Nemesis is a work that will not soon be forgotten.
Customer Reviews:
You won't be disappointed...........2007-06-25
Fans of Callas, Onassis, & Kennedy(s) should embrace this book a.s.a.p. Peter Evans does a wonderful job. What an extraordinary story that is told. I couldn't put this book down for several weeks. Even after I've finished it, it inspires re-reading. Highly recommended!!
Confusing.......2007-06-09
I thought that this book would be interesting to me because I like the Kennedy family and am interested in conspiracy theories, but I was wrong. This book is pretty good, but it is really confusing with so many people involved that sometimes it is hard to keep straight who this person is and what they did.
Rumors and Questions Answered.......2007-03-24
Those who find a conspiracy in every world event will be satisfied with the well-researched and well-written account of the possible involvement of Aristotle Onassis in the assassination of Robert Kennedy. As to the oft-asked question as to why Jacqueline Kennedy would want to marry the Greek tycoon, it is answered with a new understanding of the greed and lust that drove these compelling personalities. The narrative fairly jumps from the pages of this very fast read. Even the footnotes are fascinating.
Whoa!.......2006-05-04
What a fascinating, very well written book! It seemed every page had a juicy morsel or two and really opened my eyes into what was really going on during the last months of John Kennedy's life and why Jackie married Aristotle Onassis. As a teenager, I was shocked she'd married someone who obviously wasn't a friend of the United States. But Peter Evans portrays Onassis as someone so fascinating, even desirable in his "bulldog" approach to women, maybe money wasn't the only reason. Then again, once you read this book your whole image of "Camelot" and the "Holy Widow" will never be the same.
Review for Seller.......2006-01-15
The book came quickly and in exactly the condition stated: like brand new. Will definitely look this seller up again next time I'm shopping for books.

Few academics write as crisply as the sociologist Alan Wolfe, and even fewer are capable of making the penetrating insights that sprinkle the pages of this engaging study of suburban psychology. Based on 200 extensive interviews with middle-class Americans, Wolfe's study uncovers a striking tolerance. Americans, according to the author, can be quite harsh when judging their own behavior, but they exhibit a hands-off approach with others. (Wolfe also cites an exception to this rule: homosexuality.) Americans are not torn apart by any kind of cultural war, contrary to the claims of intellectuals on both the right and left. Instead, writes Wolfe, they are a practical people willing to accept social change. Forget the shallow opinion polls that appear every few days in the news. One Nation, After All comes closer to the real pulse of the American people than just about any other you will find.
Book Description
The subject of great critical acclaim and extensive review attention, One Nation, After All concludes that the reports of cultural divides are highly exaggerated, and Americans agree about much more--on religion, family, race, and morality--than politicians and media pundits would have us believe. These are among the surprising findings reached by renowned sociologist Alan Wolfe after two years of listening to middle-class citizens in eight communities around the nation.
In frank and often moving language, middle-class Americans, "left" and "right," express their views about immigrants of all races--whom they welcome but insist should learn English and work hard--and about giving a second chance to the deserving poor but not to the undeserving. They are remarkably tolerant on questions of religion, affirmative action, and family issues--but not about homosexuality.
Wolfe's study, which has already had an impact on the way we discuss domestic politics, disproves thought cliches that have wrongly polarized Americans, and shows the many values that hold our nation together.

Alternative alternative views.......2006-03-07
Though I have not read this book, the last review begs for a response... if you are interested in accounts that go beyond the red and blue divisions and explore similarities, I recommend "Culture War? The Myth of a Polarized America" by Morris Fiorina, a Stanford political scientist.
"Culture War?" is a marvelous little book, arguing that the great majority of Americans (i.e. all American citizens minus political elites and extremists) really agree on most of the issues we are often led to consider divisive and insurmountable. I don't personally swallow Fiorina's argument whole, but it certainly contains a lot of truth and valid arguments. In either case, it is a refreshing and thorough alternative view - concise and wonderfully smooth to read, too.
As I have not read the Wolfe Book, I'll go with the average in terms of stars, don't take the rating seriously.
Thorough insight into middle class america.......2001-10-23
I had to read this book for my introductory Sociology class, and did so purely out of requirement. However, what I found was that I actually liked the book. It was excellently written and the research behind it was sound. It offers a glimpse into the American middle class that is both interesting and important. I look forward to reading more books by Alan Wolfe.
Hard to Read? Yes...but worth it.......2001-06-06
I agree with Denise's review that this book offers hope more than anything else. It is rather academic, and does make you want to put it down.
Nonetheless, in a world where TV commentators routinely portray Americans as "us and them" based on, say, their presidential vote, it is refreshing to read of alternative views. We are more similar than dissimilar - it just won't make for an electrifying show on "Crossfire" or "Hardball".
Professor Wolfe does have some unifying themese throughout the book, which does raise this from 3 to 4 stars in my view. Without them, it's not an easy read.
In fact, I'd recommend printing a condensed version of this. Say, a NY Times Sunday Magazine-length story or even a Reader's Digest one. The story it tells is that important.
Comforting Piece of Social Research.......2000-01-25
One Nation After All is an excellent analysis for a fascinationg social research project focusing on the American Middle Class.
The study and subsequent analysis is a well thought out, detailed work packed with citations and comparisons.
As an added plus, the study shows that overall, the American Middle Class is basically a tolerant, reasonable group of people who prefer NOT to tell others how to live their lives.
For the uninitiated, research papers are writtin in the passive voice! This may require some adjustment on the part of the reader.
Almost impossible to read.......1999-11-11
The author appears not to have intended for anyone to actually READ this book. Its sentences are horrendously overlong; those few meanings which aren't badly obscured by the turgid writing are overly subtle, and in many cases underwhelming. Don't bother trying to read this.

Most useful little book!.......2007-08-16
This book does a very good job introducing concepts and basic mathematical notions.
There are comments for the "teacher" which suggest an activity before and after the exercise, and the picture lessons themselves are very well thought out.
After previewing this volume, I am definetely buying the rest of them.
