3 out of 5 stars FOOD AS MEDICINE.......2007-06-20

I GIVE THIS BOOK A LOW SCORE BECAUSE IT IS NOT A VERY GOOD BOOK ON EATING.
THERE IS NO PORTION CONTROL INFORMATION OR SUGGESTIONS. PORTIONS ARE THE KEY TO A PROPER DIET. WE ALL [AMERICANS] EAT TOO MUCH. WE'RE ALL OVER WEIGHT AND SUFFER FROM MANY EATING RELATED DISORDERS. WHAT YOU EAT IS AS IMPORTANT
AS HOW MUCH. THE SHORT SECTION ON GASTRO-INTESTINAL DISORDERS FOLLOWS THE STANDARD ANTI-BIOTIC APPROACH THOUGH CULTURED DAIRY PRODUCTS [YOGURT,BUTTERMILK,ACIDOPHILUS, COTTAGE CHEESE, SAUER KRAUT ] AND FIBER DO A MUCH BETTER AND SAFER JOB OF CURING THESE PROBLEMS.
I THINK THE OBJECTIVE OF "MEDICINE" IN THE USA IS ILLNESS. BEING SICK IS BIG BUSINESS. PIG OUT AND OFTEN. BE SICK...ALWAYS SEE YOUR DOCTOR FOR ANOTHER DRUG OR TWO OR THREE...

2 out of 5 stars For dietetics students...too simple.......2007-06-10

I had to buy this book for a class, but only used it once. It doesn't really contain THAT much information, and when one has to do research, this in not the best book to use as a reference. If you're not a student, I'd say it'll be very helpful, but for students...it is just too simple and doesn't get into the complicated facts about nutrition or dietetics we really need to learn. I already graduated, and I won't recommend this book as the reference for a major course in dietetics.

3 out of 5 stars still using the USDA Food Guide Pyramid?.......2007-05-19

I was disappointed to see that this book still endorses the USDA Food Guide Pyramid. Walter Willett's Book, "Eat, Drink, and be Healthy" has a much more acurate and up-to-date pyramid that emphasizes the importance of unsaturated oils, nuts, legumes, whole grains, and fish, and he doesn't get paid by beef and dairy lobbyists who pay our government to spread the false fact that it is necessary to eat these products to be healthy.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift , great resource .......2007-03-18

This book covers a lot of information that we cover in the food and nutrition classes that I teach. For my students, it's an invaluable resource with information I can trust It's balanced, accurate, and easy for students -- or anyone -- to understand. It's also become my standard gift for friends, weddings, and more.

5 out of 5 stars "True to its Title" by Victoria Salvato-Lechner.......2007-01-22

As a 55 year old mother, triathlon trainee and in a highly stressful hospital occupation, it was great to find such straightforward and complete information at my fingertips. This book is easy and enjoyable to read and yet manages to be a quick, comprehensive reference. I have randomly chosen health topics that interest me, for example, medication interactions with vitamin supplements. The information provided was to the point and beautifully organized. I was especially intrigued by the "Have You Ever Wondered" sections, that simply and effectively debunked common nutrition myths. This book provides believable ammunition against the fad diets and quick-fix formulas that only serve to squander our hard earned dollars and time.I believe it to be a "must have" for any home library and will include it as part of a wedding present for my niece this summer.

Named a top health book by Ladies Home Journal, The American Dietetic Association's Complete Food & Nutrition Guide teaches how to combine "good taste and good health" in every meal and snack. No matter how nutritionally impaired you think you are, you'll find clear, understandable information on the basics of metabolism and weight management, vegetarianism, nutrition for athletes, food allergies, and more. The section on eating during pregnancy and breast-feeding is absolutely essential reading for any mom-to-be, as are the chapters on feeding fussy toddlers. If you can't tell radicchio from daikon or don't know how to pronounce quinoa, the superb index will certainly come in handy.

The ADA takes a conservative stance on vitamin and mineral supplements, focusing instead on combining proper foods to maximize absorption, and there's little information about other supplements such as enzymes. But if you need help sorting the food fads from facts, the Complete Food & Nutrition Guide can't be beat.

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2001-12-03

Exccellent content for all scenarios for nutrition. Weak on protien needs for bodybuilders, but it is definitely worth it for "do you know" sections revealing little tidbits everyone should know about nutrition. Cooking section is great, even a guide to shopping, very good, a great complement in a nutrition library

5 out of 5 stars The best book on nutrition that I had ever read........2001-09-08

I can't praise this book enough! The American Dietetic Association's Complete Food & Nutrition Guide offers a wealth of information in a very easy to read format. If you buy just one book on nutrition, you should consider this one. It is filled with a vast amount of information on nutrition as well as lots of tips on how to apply that information to your life. It really is a wonderful book. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have resource!.......2000-10-29

Finally ... a nutrition book that offers honest, straight-forward advice in a format that's easy, and even fun, to read. Although I bought it for myself, it has now become a resource that our entire family uses, including my parents.

5 out of 5 stars Your One-Stop Nutrition Guide--Outstanding!.......1999-10-29

Duyff has managed to sift through the scientific data that supports today's nutrition recommendations and provide consumers and healthcare professionals alike with a comprehensive source of sound and reliable information. If you're looking for THE book, one that covers virtually every topic related to food and nutrition, then look no further-this book's got it all!

1 out of 5 stars More Food Pyramid, One-Size-Fits All Rubbish.......1999-06-21

If you like"Association Diets," especially one from one of the most politically agressive and media savvy organizations, this one is for you. One look shows the typical high starch, high glycemic diet that almost killed me. If you are truly interested in eating healthy, this type of one-size-fits all diet guide is just about useless.

5 out of 5 stars Conways all way........2007-03-30

The best book of it's type. While Jane's for the same general period is a collection of period work, complete with incorrect data used at the time, Conway's is an accurate library of the warships of the day.

4 out of 5 stars Veritable encyclopedia of the Great War navies.......2005-08-10

The 1906-1921 book of Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships is arguably the second best in the series after the outstanding (although increasingly rare and outrageously expensive) 1947-1995 volume. It includes highly detailed histories of the various ship classes and a great deal of information. This sets it apart from the 1922-1946 edition, which feels strangely empty because it contains little in terms of history of individual ship classes and drowns the reader in facts and figures.

As such, the 1906-1921 edition reads much more like a very detailed history book than its successor, while giving us the same amount of facts and statistics, and is all the better for it.

I recommend it without reservation to fans of naval warfare, provided you can find a copy...

    5 out of 5 stars About what I expected.......2003-01-18

It's very much like the 1922-1946 book in terms of coverage, and that's fine. What I wanted was a general survey like that, something to fill in the gaps in my knowledge for this period, and I learned many things here. There's only so much you can fit in a book like this, so I can't rate it down for lack of detail, other books can fill that gap.

    5 out of 5 stars A "must have" book!.......2001-08-20

This book, together with the other of the serie that cover the period from 1860 to the present, is an outstanding one, the ideal reference book for the person looking for informations about the evolution of the modern warships through the description of the ship themselves. The book is divided into sections, each dealing with one nation's navy; the ships of every nation are grouped by type and each class is described by a brief textual introduction, a tabular description with the main ships' detail (size, machinery, artillery, armour and so on) and, for each ship, the building dates and the fate. The textual description is, at least for the greater ship category (battleship, carriers and cruisers) quite detailed and reports a lot of interesting data about the building, the machinery, the operational career and some other interesting stuffs. There is a good number of very good drawings and photographs (not as detailed as a ship modeler would hope, but this book is not for the modeler) and you can find in the books every nation that ever possessed a warship. A "must have" for every naval enthusiast!

    5 out of 5 stars Conways 1906-1921 is great.......2000-10-13

Conways has always been the most reliable of all the warship histories books. Including specifications, histories, and pictures/drawings of all the ships. A history of each countries navy (during the 1906-1921 era) at the beginning of each nationality listing gives you good reference to understand the type of ships each nation needed and used. This book is very interesting for the World War One expert and/or naval historian or simply a warship lover. I use this book to look at various ships for radio control warship combat. I love this book and look at it many times a week and will buy all the rest of the series of books (Conway All the Worlds Fighting Ships). If you are at all interested in naval warships, definitely buy this book.

      Book Description

A memorable tale of adventure on the turbulent seas of the Great Southern and Atlantic oceans—on one of the most historic voyages of our time—finds its way into paperback. This is William F. Stark’s engrossing memoir of the last leg of the Grain Race, and the Pamir’s rounding of fearsome Cape Horn—the storm-tossed tip of South America just 600 miles from Antarctica—the veritable Mount Everest of sailing. In 1949, the crew of thirty-four sailors from around the world experienced the shipboard life of the seventeenth century on a four-masted vessel that carried hundreds of acres of sail. In 128 days the Pamir journeyed 16,000 miles from Port Victoria, Australia, to Falmouth, England, through the world’s stormiest seas, as Stark worked on decks awash with huge swells, and scrambled up ice-coated rigging to manhandle sails on masts that were up to twenty stories high. Contrasting romance with the realities of life at sea, and poignantly evoking the love affair he left behind to join the Pamir, while punctuating his tale with illuminating photos, maps, and details of maritime history, Stark has written a thrilling book that climaxes the fabled era begun by Cape Horn merchant sailors more than three centuries ago.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Worthwhile Reading Experience.......2004-12-30

The author presents a very well written personal memoir of his 1949 trip around Cape Horn on an old fashioned windjammer. He was a junior at Dartmouth studying "abroad" in Europe when in pursuit of his dream he travelled by airplane to Australia in the hope of securing a deckhand position on a four masted barque. I found that the story was very well presented. Not being a sailor myself, I found that the author more than adequately presented the nautical and seafaring jargon in easy to understand layman's terms. In reading this book I felt that I was the beneficiary of an "old timer" telling his very personal story of a great adventure just to me. You will not be disappointed if you enjoy sea stories well told.

A gem. I didn't want it to end. The best adventure I've read since Stephen Ambrose's ''Undaunted Courage.'' Give it to your father; give it to your sons.

        5 out of 5 stars a must-have.......2005-11-09

Very few books on American architects for children exist, period. This is a "must" for any kid (or parent) interested in the subject. Frank Lloyd-Wright for Kids is a wonderful addition to an older child's bookshelf, especially if he or she is interested in the art, architecture, history and/or engineering. In Frank Lloyd Wright for Kids, all these subjects-- plus 21 hands-on activities-- are interwoven to increase awareness and understanding of culture, history and the role of architecture in society. We especially enjoyed the hands-on suggestions- everything from cooking to science to art to poetry. For these reasons this book gets my enthusiastic support.

        1 out of 5 stars Not satisfied!.......2004-10-09

I'm about to do student teaching and have been preparing elementary ART lesson plans. I purchased this book to support a Frank Lloyd Wright stained glass project (out of tissue and construction paper). It looked like a great children's book for background info. to introduce the concepts of architecture, geometric figures, and some art history. It says 8 and up, but their is no way they would sit through a skimming of this book during class! The pictures are boring and not in color, so much of Wright's appeal are his colors! Especially to children! What was Thorne-Thomsen thinking!? Half the book is wordy bibliography, the other half is a bunch of basic assignments, which are good ideas, but don't really follow through.. for example, the Fallingwater graham cracker house - which sounded neat, doesn't actually have directions, it just suggests you use graham crackers and royal icing and wax paper and cardboard under the structure (DUH!!). Very disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative! Great for budding architects!.......1999-08-30

This book has black and white, and red pictures of different shapes and structures as well as alot of personal history of Frank Lloyd Wright. It also has games, activities and recipes. Fascinating for our next generation of architects!

Yeah I found this book to be really lacking in the whole "cool" category (and "sweet" category while I'm at it). I learn more from the history channel and old John Wayne videos. You should only buy this book if you go to West Point and they just closed book issue and your Professor is getting all up in your grill about buying one. If you buy this book for any of the following reasons...flog yourself:
          1) You think you will enjoy it

              Book Description

A Short History of Ethics is a significant contribution written by one of the most important living philosophers. For the second edition Alasdair MacIntyre has included a new preface in which he examines his book "thirty years on" and considers its impact. It remains an important work, ideal for all students interested in ethics and morality.

"The second edition of this classic will be more widely read than the first, one expects, if only because in the intervening three decades the author has become perhaps the most important moral philosopher in the English-speaking world." —First Things

"This brilliant and provocative book is not so much a history of ethics as it is an essay about the history of ethics, with numerous examples. . . ." —Philosophical Review

". . . MacIntyre is always provocative, and this book will continue to excite engagement with fundamental moral issues." —Choice

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction.......2007-01-29

I was always in a certain kind of doubt when it was asked of me to recommend one or the other of numerous histories of philosophy. They are not your ordinary texts, which you can browse about in your leasure time. They often require some thinking to really grasp what author had in mind and where does he stand at all. After all history of philosophy is elusive subject even to profficient ones. Looking back, in something less than seven thousand years of culture as we know it (it began with emergence of Summerian epos - Gilgamesh), one finds himself before wast ammount of data, to put it that way. When faced with them, one feels compelled to escape in any direction avaliable to him.

But neverthelles, something drives you to continue your studies, to learn and feed upon knowledge of others, to live in times long forgotten and to think an re-think thought again and again. But without that initial spark which puts great flames in motion all would be in vain. MacIntyre book is one that feeds that flame, helping it to grow.

If one really wants to understand key questions of ethics and how, at the first place they came to be, one should start with MacIntyre. You won't find your asnwers listed here, rather contrary, MacIntyre, in his almost positivistic scepticism, states many pro et contra arguments for theories presented in his book, that reader finds himself confused on many occasions. But precisely that kind of expose is what drives one to continue searching and to complete questions posed by MAcIntyre. A task that takes whole lifetime and more.

In the end I have to mention that ethics described here concernes itself mostly with western ethics and ethical thought. East is left out. For which purpose, I'll let you find for yourself.

3 out of 5 stars A Book on Moral Philosophy.......2006-01-24

Professor Alasdair MacIntyre in "A Short History of Ethics" produced an interesting book covering the long history of moral philosophy. The author provides a historical background and perspective for studying the selected texts on moral philosophy.

The book first provides the reader with an account of Greek thought and the philosophical basis of their thinking. The author then proceeds to discuss the history of philosophy to the present day. The reader is then able to appreciate the discussion of moral philosophy in the appropriate historical context.

I enjoyed reading the book, although I would not classify it among the best books on the subject. The author seems to assume that the reader has some understanding of philosophy which would make it difficult for those without some understanding of the subject to follow his arguments. However, the book should be of value to people with an interest in moral philosophy.

1 out of 5 stars The mighty mountain gave birth to a little mouse. .......2005-03-25

              This is a deceptive book.
It promises an outline of the history of Ethics "from the Homeric age to the Twentieth Century", that is, with a perspective wider than that usually limited to great "canonical" philosophers and oriented to a narrow readership.
But the result is definitely disappointing.

I really disliked this book, and cannot recommend it.
Before posting this comment, I took time to read observations of other readers, to check if my impression was shared.
Most of them complain about very poor style ("the book is poorly written" - Panjack), "poor structure" and "poor content" (J. de Lijster - "patchy historical survey" - Fiske), excessive focusing ("Beginners will find this a difficult book to work through" - Panjack), abuse of modern perspective to judge (and not to present in a impartial way) very different attitudes ("He frequently announces arguments that he does not work out, and he sets out lines that end in the mist" - J. de Lijster) and in the end excessive brevity ("He tries to cover too much ground too quickly" - Fiske) resulting in approximation and confusion.
Given these remarks, it is amazing the average vote is still rather high, even taking account of the fame and respect that professor MacIntyre can command by the fame of his other works.

This essay is flawed under all the aspects under which you can look at. If the style is gray and dull, and certainly not welcoming the reader, the argument has been developed very poorly.
Besides I'm still perplexed at how could professor MacIntyre truly believed to be able to reduce about 3.000 years of history of Ethics in about 250 pages!

The most annoying feature is the deceptiveness of the title: the historical and sociological framework is used only when it suits the author, and in a most conventional way. After being presented with a very ordinary opposition between an Homeric aristocratic attitude and the new more "democratic" posture of the V century b.C, the method is almost totally dropped to return to a dull diachronic presentation of great philosophers (great philosophers and not, alas, relevant themes).

For an introduction to the history of Ethics, as a reader I'd expect to receive at least a definition of the relevant terms: religious precepts, morals, ethos, politics and ethics.
But Mr. MacIntyre possibly believes that definition is a waste of time in a historical survey.

If definition is not presented, likewise no attempt is done to explain why Ethical thinking has emerged for the first time in Greece as a distinct field of philosophical enquiry.

We are spared as well the - historically relevant - analysis of the relationship (and conflict) between religious precepts (Abraham who is required by his God to kill his only son with no apparent reason), aristocratic ethos (the role of feud and honor), negative morality (the "You shall not..." in the Bible), positive moral precepts (the "Love thy neighbor" in the Gospel), politics as a kind of ethics (Plato and Aristotle, but also Socrates who submits to the unjust law that put him to death), political justice vs. religion in relevant moral issues (a theme developed in the Greek classical tragedy - specially in the Oresteia, but also in the Oedipus), the individual and social dimension in ethics (look at the debate on death penalty, for example - or the second amendment of the Constitution), the role of free will (the debate inside Christianity) and the role of man as moral agent and of man as man capable of deciding to act rightly - or to rebel authority.

All these themes are best suited to be expounded with an historical perspective.
But in this essay you cannot find anything of this.
I finished reading the book with immense melancholy for what it could have been and is not.

Besides, in a academic survey it could be interesting if the author could have taken account of relationship between ethics and other philosophical questions: not just Logics, but also lesser known fields, like the fascination for the geometric method in XVII Century (Hobbes reading Euclid, Spinoza's "Ethica more geometrico demonstrata", Leibniz's moral calculus, up to Franklin's aborted "Art of Virtue").

Some remarks of the writer appear truly surprising.
The so called notion of the "mean" in Aristotle was in fact a deep rooted theme in Greek culture and religiosity - and not just "the single most difficult concept in the Ethics" (at pag.65).

In the end this book is a complete failure.
It could give testimony of the all-human attempt to investigate on the themes of how to live a meaningful life, how to act responsibly and in the end learn how to confront the idea of death. Ethics, after all, is also the promethean attempt of man to disenfranchise from oracles, soothsayers and miracles; to reconsider human action in a pervasive all-human logical framework, and, in the end, to vindicate the importance of human dignity.
But this book is a patchy collection of second hand ideas, scattered here and there in the usual chronological order.

As everyone, I prefer posting positive remarks, but in this case it would not be fair to future readers.
None the less as a non professional reader, I do share a passion for philosophy (specially ethics, logics and epistemology). In this particular field I can recommend the excellent
              - "Morality" by Bernard Gert, that is until now the best introduction to the argument I had the chance to read.
You are truly welcome if you can suggest other readings or just share ideas and comments!
              Thanks for reading.

              3 out of 5 stars Serious shortcomings.......2003-11-08

Professor MacIntyre's book is in some respects fine, in other respects terrible. The good thing is that he offers valuable insights and arguments for an historical approach to the analysis of moral judgments. He covers a large area, and has at times pointly summaries. The bad thing is that his text is poorly structured, and at times has a poor content. He frequently announces arguments that he does not work out, and he sets out lines that end in the mist. This fact is the more irritating, because, apart from a the chapter division, the lay-out completely lacks structure. Moreover, he seems rather biassed against (protestant) christian ethics, and tries to understand it apart from a notion so fundamental as creation. As a result, he misses the opportunity to understand both the revelational aspects of creation and the rational aspects of revelation. Not surprisingly, he cannot bridge the gap between rationality and revelation, and he ends up soon with an evaluation that is coloured by words like 'irrational', and 'arbitrary', leaving the reader with a seriously flawed picture of a important factor in contemporary ethics.

I've read a lot of non-fiction wilderness books and this is in the top 10 of my list. It's written very well and entertaining. I never heard of the Y2Y project until I read this book. Fascinating! I have driven through the Yukon, been to Yellowstone and BC. I think it's a great project and I hope that it continues to receive a more positive response. I highly recommend this book.

Most stories of trail adventures and sponsored trips are full of bravado and ego boosting exagerations or inane details of equipment and techinque. Heuer, however, is a modest writer relating exciting stories without downplaying or overplaying his acomplishments. Best of all he is always relating them to a bigger picture that we can all identify with. Bravo.

An easy, entertaining read and a nice snapshot of the good and bad elements currently effecting the Yellowstone to Yukon region. Through a personal story Karsten makes both his huge trek and the region's biological challenges seem relatively easy to face. This is an important feat conssidering he and others hope to engage and mobilize thousands in a pioneering international conservation initiative.

As a PS, I was surprised to learn the Canadians were doing as much, if not more, damage to the environment then we 'mericans. And I thought they were so innocent up there.

5 out of 5 stars Trying to make Y2Y real, and problems on BOTH sides of the border.......2006-03-21

Y2Y, if you're not eco-minded, is "Yellowstone to Yukon." The idea behind is that large animals, above all grizzlies, need a lot of room to roam -- and this room needs to be adequately networked and connected, with as few human-disturbed chokepoints as possible.

Well, Karsten Heuer, a native of Canmore, Alberta, and a former Parks Canada ranger at Banff, decided to hike all the way from Yellowstone National Park to the British Columbia-Yukon border -- more than 2,000 kilometers/1,200 miles, and involving skiing and canoeing, not just hiking. Breaks in the trip were jam-packed with PR work on both sies of the border.

This book is about his trip. It's also about some of the problems the development of Y2Y corridor would face.

Surprising for many from the American side of the border (and contrary to one brief reviewer, this is about preserving ALL the Rockies, not just the American portion of those mountains) overall, more of the problems are probably on the Canadian side of the border. And that's in spite of the often anti-environmental leadership that currently resides in Washington, D.C.

Both exploratory oil drilling and coal mining crowd closer to the heart of the Rockies north of the border. Logging in the north involves more rapacious cutting, often clear-cutting in places it wouldn't be allowed in the U.S.

What's driving this is Canada's governmental structure, which is even more "provincial rights" in *reality*, in many ways, than the U.S.'s is "states rights" in *hyperbole.* And the Alberta and B.C. provincial governments have generally been as knee-jerk pro-development as California's anti-environmental Congressman Richard Pombo -- and in a position to do more with that.

Read this book, complete with stunning photos, to show why Y2Y needs preserving.

Bears and other large animals naturally wander across an enormous range but increasingly they are safe only in isolated, protected parks that are hemmed in by human development and the imprisoned bears are in danger of becoming inbred. If only the islands of safety could be connected by corridors of preserved habitat to allow free movement by animals like bears, then an enormous problem in conservation would be solved.

Karsten Heuer’s journey was intended to show that such a system of parks and corridors is feasible. He set out in June 1998 from Yellowstone Park, Wyoming, on the beginning of a 3,400 kilometre hike that would end, 18 months later, in Watson Lake, Yukon Territory. Along the way, he faced personal problems, including the breakup of his relationship with the woman who had planned the journey with him. He came to terms with difficult public relations problems when he spoke to loggers and others with a stake in the economic exploitation of wild lands. And, above all, he overcame extraordinary physical challenges: ferocious storms, avalanches, apparently impassable rivers in full flood, and bears that mistook him for dinner.

Accompanied by occasional human companions and a remarkable border collie named Webster, Heuer demonstrated that there is nearly continuous wilderness up and down the length of the Rocky Mountains, much of it still occupied by bears, all of it still salvageable if the right decisions are made soon.

1 out of 5 stars Environmentalism at its worst.......2004-01-27

Karsten Heuer is an excellent writer of fiction, particularly in the way he weaves half-truths and worrisome pronouncements on the impending death of Mother Nature into his narrative. There isn't enough room in this space to debunk his jaundiced and unsubstantiated view of the natural world. Suffice it to say that anyone looking for a well researched book on the actual state of planet Earth, one that is backed up by meticulous footnotes and references to readily accessible facts, should read "The Skeptical Environmentalist: Measuring the Real State of the World" by Bjorn Lomborg, a world-renowned statistician with credentials to match his acclaimed work. Walking the Big Wild Fantasy is a better title for Heuer's green musings.
