Excellent resource for colorectal patient support.......2007-07-20
This is a professionally written book, with lots of detailed info and references. It's not a very easy read for the layman, but if you're really interested in the subject, as a patient or a helper, this will cover most of your needs and questions. Some times it goes into more detail than I would need, but I just skip what I consider too much for my brain. Many thanks to the authors for such a comprehensive non-medical text.
Strongly recommended for colorectal patients and their families.......2006-06-04

Book Description
From America's leading cancer authority comes a patient's advocacy book for colorectal cancer patients--and their families--that offers medical expertise, practical advice, and emotional support.
Colon and rectal cancers (or colorectal cancer) affect more and more people each year and account for about 11 percent of all new cancer cases and 10 percent of all cancer-related deaths. More than 95,000 new cases of colorectal cancer were diagnosed in 1998 alone. Recognizing that there is a 92 percent survival rate if these diseases are treated early, the American Cancer Society, the nation's leader in cancer research, education, and rehabilitation, and Dr. Bernard Levin, one of America's preeminent physicians and an expert on colon and rectal cancer, now offer the most comprehensive resource for patients and their families to turn to.
This book contains the most up-to-date information about these related diseases--from basic facts about what to do when confronted with a diagnosis of colon or rectal cancer to the latest medical data, treatments, and procedures. But more important, this book considers the patient's perspective, providing psychological and emotional support for patients through case histories and anecdotes they can relate to. Moreover, the American Cancer Society's Colorectal Cancer provides easy recipes and a diet plan to help alleviate stress on the body. This important new book addresses the full range of issues that colorectal cancer patients and their families may face.
Customer Reviews:
ACS is in bed with pharmaceutical companies.......2004-12-03
I would never trust anything the American Cancer Society says. They are very biased in favor of expensive pharmaceuticals with cancer-causing side-effects. They are the wealthiest "charity" in America, with cash reserves of $1 Billion.
The Role of the ACS in the War Against Cancer
The verdict is unassailable. The American Cancer Society bears a major responsibility for losing the winnable war against cancer.
The launching of the 1971 War Against Cancer provided the ACS with a well-exploited opportunity to pursue it own myopic and self-interested agenda. Its strategies remain based on two lies -- that there has been dramatic progress in the treatment and cure of cancer, and that any increase in the incidence and mortality of cancer is due to aging of the population and smoking while denying any significant role for involuntary exposures to industrial carcinogens in air, water, consumer products and the workplace.
Most of the funds raised by ACS go to pay overhead, salaries, fringe benefits, and travel expenses of its national executives in Atlanta. They also go to pay Chief Executive Officers, who earn six-figure salaries in several states, and the hundreds of other employees who work out of some 3,000 regional offices nationwide. The typical ACS affiliate, which helps raise the money for the national office, spends more than 52 percent of its budget on salaries, pensions, fringe benefits, and overhead for its own employees.
Salaries and overhead for most ACS affiliates also exceeded 50 percent, although most direct community services are handled by unpaid volunteers. DiLorenzo summed up his findings by emphasizing the hoarding of funds by the ACS.
"Most contributors believe their donations are being used to fight cancer, not to accumulate financial reserves. More progress in the war against cancer would be made if they would divest some of their real estate holdings and use the proceeds -- as well as a portion of their cash reserves -- to provide more cancer services."
Aside from high salaries and overhead, most of what is left of the ACS budget goes to basic research and research into profitable, patented cancer drugs.
The current budget of the ACS is $380 million and its cash reserves approach one billion dollars. Yet its aggressive fund-raising campaign continues to plead poverty, and lament the lack of available money for cancer research, while ignoring efforts to prevent cancer by phasing out avoidable exposures to environmental and occupational carcinogens.
Meanwhile, the ACS is silent about its intricate relationships with the wealthy cancer drug industry and chemical industries.

Learning about colon cancer after diagnosis.......2001-06-17
After I was diagnosed as having colon cancer, I started reading books to get a better understanding about the disease. This book was the best one I read.
The author explains colon cancer in a technical manner, but in a way that the average person can understand the subject. It is written clearly and provided me an excellent reference to question my doctors during the decision making and to be prepared after the operation.
The author also spends time discussing diet as a possible preventive for cancer cancer. Since one who has had colon cancer is a candidate for its reoccurence, the chapters about diet are a good reference for the future.
If a person is concerned about colon cancer, this book should be in his library.
Informative book for colorectal cancer patients.......2000-08-24
Colorectal Cancer: A Thorough and Compassionate Resource For Patients and Their FAmilies by Bernard Levin M.D.
This book covers the required topics, a patient and their relatives should learn about the disease. Hence I chose this book among all the listed books for colorectal cancer. It is very well organized to educate patients in a concise and compassionate manner. The first hand experience of several patients as examples makes me aware the importance of early diagnosis and educate that colorectal cancer is highly curable and need not be alarmed as we usually fear about cancer. Pictures also clearly depict how this cancer differs from other kinds and cured if it is diagnosed at early stage and prevented from recurrence.
Topics pertaining to causes of the disease are informative especially the influence of diet as many of us are not aware of the limit of any food even if they are nutritionally good. It elaborates on the lists of food to be consumed to prevent the disease, during chemotherapy and for patients after the surgery. The significance and role of minerals, vitamins, calcium and antioxidants in prevention is helpful to plan the diet individually. It also discusses about anticancer agents like NSAIDS, hormones and other chemopreventive agents. It is misleading since a layman may decide to consume as a preventive measures but it might be higher the limit. Side effects that will occur if they are not recommended should be included in detail.
Topics concerning stages and treatment is dealt well and morally supports the patient. For example if the patient is undergone surgery to remove tumor he need not be scared as it is a final stage and life is short if the statistical data of colorectal cancer survivors rate is included. Though five-year survival rate is clearly mentioned for all stages. It would be useful for patients and their family members to learn the total years of any patient survived after the cure or the treatment with any stage. Different types of classification like TNM, Dukes and Astler-Coller in staging the disease are listed and they are compared with the other for better understanding. Histology analysis of the cancerous tissue (differences between cancer and normal cells and their pattern of differentiation) could be included. Recipes included are very easy to prepare for a patient and highly balanced to meet the daily calorific needs. It is crucial for an individual to read this book and be aware of the methods for early diagnosis and make use of it as it may occur to any one.

Book Description
The beginning of the 19th century saw the rise of a remarkable Sikh leader in the Punjab province of north-west India. Unifying the feudal rulers under his authority, the conquering Maharaja Ranjit Singh pursued campaigns of expansion for nearly 40 years, creating for the purpose a new regular army on the Western model. His death in 1839 found the frontiers of Sikh and British power in confrontation; in the 1840s the inevitable trial of strength brought British crown and East India Company troops into battle against the most formidable Indian army they ever faced. Its story is told here in fascinating detail, illustrated with rare early paintings and with colourful reconstructions of Punjabi regular soldiers and feudal warriors.

Walter Reuther: THE MOST DANGEROUS MAN IN DETROIT
ASIN: 0975379216 |
Book Description
A memior about growing up with labor legend and social visionary, Walter Reuther, by his youngest daughter, Elisabeth. It is also a history of the UAW with Walter Reuther at the helm, and the monumental social impact he had on America and the world.
The book dispels the conservative propaganda that liberals are bad for America. In contrast it tells how one of our nation's greatest liberal and moral leaders created pensions and health care for workers, during World War II gave FDR the plan to turn Detroit's auto plants into manufacturing of planes and tanks, thus creating the Arsenal of Democracy, co-founded the United Way with Henry Ford II, marched side-by-side with Martin Luther King, Jr., during all great civil rights struggles of the 50s and 60s, was the first to give aid to Cesar Chavez and the migrant farm workers, gave President John F. Kennedy the plan that became the Peace Corps, gave the seed money for the first Earth Day, and at the time of his untimely death in a mysterious plane crash was leading the effort for national health care insurance for every American.
The book also reveals Walter Reuther and his close relationships with Eleanor Roosevelt, John and Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. Elisabeth tells of the security measures her family endured as numerous assassination attempts were made on her father's life. Her first memory, a shotgun blast that nearly killed her father, taught her that he had numerous enemies who were trying to stop him. Richard Nixon, Barry Goldwater and J. Edgar Hoover never tired of of trying to destroy Reuther's voice. This is an inspiring story of a true working class hero.

The true story of a legendary American labor leader.......2005-01-05
Putting The World Together My Father Walter Reuther: The Liberal Warrior is the true story of a legendary American labor leader, as told by his daughter. Walter Reuther's determination to promote unionization helped bring about the American middle class, and the benefits packages that workers today take for granted, including health care and pensions. For his tireless work, he survived an assassination attempt that was never solved, and died with his wife in a plane crash that may or may not have been the result of sabotage. Putting The World Together is a remarkable story, touching upon the contributions of all three Reuther Brothers in their efforts to revolutionize the workplace but colored with the emotion of filial love.

Release Date: 2004-06-01 |
Book Description
When my parents packed my brother, sister and me into the family van and drove us to Missouri for Spring Break, we brought our entirely imagined city-hardness with us. The hard truth that we were about to learn was that, in fact, we weren't tough kids at all. Our life in the city had not prepared us for anything. Nothing could prepare us for this.
A Rip in Heaven is Jeanine Cummins's story of a night in April 1991, when her two cousins, Julie and Robin Kerry, and her brother, Tom, were assaulted on the Chain of Rocks Bridge that spans the Mississippi River just outside of St. Louis. When, after a harrowing ordeal, Tom managed to escape the attackers and flag down help, he thought the nightmare would soon be over. He couldn't have been more wrong. Tom, his sister Jeanine, and their entire family were just at the beginning of a horrific odyssey through the aftermath of a violent crime, a world of shocking betrayal, endless heartbreak, and utter disillusionment. It was a trial by fire from which no one would emerge unscathed.
This is one family's intimate, immediate, and unforgettable story of what victims can suffer long after they should be safe.
Customer Reviews:
Murder from the family's perspective.......2007-08-16
As one reviewer has noted, this is not a typical addition to the true crime genre. It shares much in common with Strange Piece of Paradise in that both are attempts by a victim/family member to depict the aftermath of a crime. Where Terri Jentz had to confront years of not knowing who her attacker was, Jeanine Cummins and family had to face having a beloved family member being accused of killing two other beloved family members.
It's hard to review a book such as this without a certain amount of sympathy entering into one's judgment. It is for me, at least. This is not the best written non-fiction book you'll ever read, nor is the prose in it the most fluid. It is also, because of Cummins' decision to tell this in the third-person, the most emotionally wrought. But it is better written than most first person accounts I've read. Cummins takes considerable pains to bring Julie and Robin Kerry to life, to make the reader feel the loss Cummins and her family felt. The horror of their deaths (and the nature of their deaths) is compounded when Cummins' brother is accused of their murders.
This is the story of the death of innocence, both literal and figurative. By the time the murders are caught, turn on each other and three are sentenced to death there little sense of justice for the family. Two girls have been gang-raped and murdered, one of the bodies has never been found. The survivor of the attacks has been first branded the likely suspect by the press then must relive the events over and over, in the trials and the subsequent parole hearings. As if this isn't enough agony, they must endure having the convicted murderers still claim their innocence and blame one of the victims. The question of Why? remains unanswered by the perpetrators and possibly unanswerable.
Excellent.......2007-07-10
I had this book on my book shelf for a while and hesitated to read it because I knew that it would be painful and depressing. This is the first book that I have read regarding true crime where you really feel to the core the effects and aftermath on the living. This book is excellent, well written, and one of the few books you read that will stay with you and effect how you process stories that you read and watch in the future. After reading this, you truly comprehend the pain and lasting effects that violence has on everyone left behind.
A moving and important book.......2007-05-28
I have little to add to the other reviewers here. But as one who has written about victims myself, I believe this is the best account I've ever read of the devastation criminals leave in their wake.
Read this not merely to learn about a heinous crime or evil men. Read it to meet two wonderful young women, or maybe three -- Julie and Robin, the victims, and Jeanine Cummins, the author.
A families point of view.......2007-01-27
I went to high school with Robin and Julie. I can't drive over the Mississippi River without thinking about them. The newspaper articles, and TV interviews in St Louis were mainly focused on Tom's (the cousin) guilt, and these "mystery 4 men". I was glad to hear a book had been written from "their" point of view. When I say "their" I mean Robin and Julie. Robin and Julie are gone, and no longer have a voice for themselves, so Jeanine did the best she could to capture this horrible moment in time, and the aftermath it caused.
I feel that as much hatred that she COULD have to the four men that murdered her cousins, and let her brother be blamed for the crimes, Jeanine was fair, and kind to the men. She did not make excuses for their actions, but she did explain how a fun night out, a decision to rob, could turn so dangerous and deadly in minutes.
Heartwarming.......2007-01-25
Although this is a true crime book and heartbreaking, it is also a heartwarming story. The love and concern Ms. Cummins had for her brother and cousins radiated from the pages as she told the story of the death of her cousins and near death of her brother. I was so moved by the story that I sent Ms. Cummins an email to let her know how she touched me and that I wished her a great future as an author. I was so surprised a few months later to receive an answer back, thanking me for my email. What a class act and her family should be so proud. May her cousins rest in peace and her brother have a wonderful life.

Book Description
Once predicted to be 'the Middle East of the Year 2000', Central America and the Caribbean have long been a powder keg of revolutionary activity and guerilla warfare. The United States, with important strategic and economic interests in the region, has traditionally opted for a military solution toward the political upheaval, developing a range of responses, from direct military intervention to the training of tens of thousands of Latin-American soldiers in anti-guerilla warfare techniques. This text, enhanced by colour plates and numerous photographs, examines the history of the Central American Wars by country, detailing the organization and uniforms of the combatants.

Useful Overview.......2001-12-30
This is a snapshot view of all the principal nations of Central America with Haiti, Cuba, and Mexico added for boot. There is enough detail and background of twentieth century events to set the stage for the situation as it was in the eighties. The period covers the victory of Castro and the subsequent events.
There is nothing on South America, Venezuela, Colombia, etc. A good subject for another volume in this series. Drug Wars of the Jungle.
Quick introduction and good illustrations make a good read.

Book Description
The theory of public administration has long been based on the notions of hierarchy and authority. However, the way managers actually manage has increasingly become at odds with the theory. The growing gap between theory and practice poses enormous challenges for managers in determining how best to work -- and for American government in determining how best to hold public administrators accountable for effectively doing their jobs.
In the quest to improve the practice of public administration, Kettl explains, political scientists and other scholars have tried a number of approaches, including formal modeling, implementation studies, a public management perspective, and even institutional choice. This book offers a new framework for reconciling effective administration with the requirements of democratic government. Instead of thinking in terms of organizational structure and management, Kettl suggests, administrators and theorists need to focus on "governance,"or links between government and its broader environment -- political, social, and administrative. Government is the collection of institutions that act with authority and create formal obligations;governance is the set of processes and institutions, formal and informal, through which social action occurs. Linking government and governance, Kettl concludes, is the foundation for understanding the theory and practice of government in twenty-first century America -- for making public programs work better and for securing the values on which the American republic has been built.

Go Team Bush.......2005-06-25
This is the guy who brought us the fawning page-turner, Team Bush. No research in here, no grounding in reality, mostly recycling of past work. He's written this book, what?, ten or twelve times over the past two decades. Enough already.

Book Description
This book looks at how an animal is organized to carry out a difficult task - that of feeding on plants. The complex adaptations necessary to enable animals to obtain nutrients successfully from a herbivorous diet are many. For the first time these problems are examined here purely from the perspective of reptiles. Common themes are teased out and arranged chronologically to help gain an understanding of the patterns of diversity change in the group. This book will be of great interest to researchers and students of zoology, palaeontology, evolution, ecology, functional anatomy and morphology.

Tadpoles: The Biology of Anuran Larvae
ASIN: 0471244759 |
Book Description
In an age when advanced molecular and genetic tools allow studies in various systems, amphibian metamorphosis still offers perhaps the most accessible model for the study of postembryonic organogenesis and mechanisms of hormonal regulation during vertebrate development. Amphibian Metamorphosis: From Morphology to Molecular Biology integrates findings from the most recent research with earlier observations, providing molecular and mechanistic insights into the signal transduction pathways underlying tissue-specific transformations during metamorphosis.
The author, renowned expert of anuran metamorphosis and Head of the Unit of Molecular Morphogenesis at NICHD/NIH, begins with an overview of metamorphosis in different classes of amphibians and various factors that influence this process. A review of earlier morphological, cellular, and biochemical changes focuses on organs and tissues that have been studied extensively at the molecular level, while discussion of the thyroid hormone signal transduction pathway emphasizes transcriptional regulation mechanisms by thyroid receptors. The book provides a summary and comparison of gene regulation programs induced by thyroid hormone in several organs that undergo distinct metamorphic transformations. Several chapters are devoted to functional and mechanistic implications of the molecular findings on the thyroid hormone response genes in tissue transformation.
Special features of this book include:
* An emphasis on integrating the morphological approach with molecularand cell biology
* A historical perspective on the progression from discovery of the thyroid hormone to present-day research advances
* Comparisons of amphibian and insect metamorphosis
* Dozens of instructive photographs, several in full color
Amphibian Metamorphosis: From Morphology to Molecular Biology is a unique and invaluable resource for professionals and aspiring professionals in develop-mental biology, molecular biology, cell biology, evolutionary biology, and endocrinology.

Book Description
In this study the author analyzes the phylogenetic relationships among the genera and species of alligator lizards (Squamata: Anguidae: Gerrhonotinae). The subfamily consists of six monophyletic genera: Coloptychon, Gerrhonotus, Elgaria, Barisia, Mesaspis, and Abronia. The author reviews the history of gerrhonotine taxonomy, provides a key to, and diagnoses of, all gerrhonotine taxa, and discusses taxonomic and biogeographic implications of gerrhonotine relationships.
