Book Description

This book, written especially for the often-neglected male half of the parenting team, is a father's guide to making wise investments in his children and family.

In BECOMING A FATHER, author Dr. William Sears shares his own story of maturing into fatherhood, discovering the joys of being an involved dad, and weathering the changes that children bring to a marriage.

This book discusses the father's role during childbirth, different ways a father can interact and bond with his child, discipline, balancing the demads of a job with the needs of a family, and more!

New information in this revised edition includes additional information for families where both parents work along with updated information on support during childbirth, co-sleeping, and breastfeeding.

Dr. Sears understands the concerns and conflicts of both fathers and mothers. Reading this book will help both partners understand each other better as they share the important work of raising children.

5 out of 5 stars A practical "what to do" manual.......2003-08-11

Now in a newly revised edition, Becoming A Father: How To Nurture And Enjoy Your Family by physician and author William Sears is an informational guide and a practical "what to do" manual written especially for fathers, and concerns everything from what a man should do during his wife's labor and childbirth; to proper discipline of young ones ranging from toddler through teens; coping with the demands children place on upon a marriage; balancing family and career needs; being a role model, and more. Becoming A Father is enthusiastically recommended reading for new and "about to be" fathers, and has much to recommended it to veteran fathers (and even grandfathers!).

4 out of 5 stars The ONLY Book My Husband Read.......2002-08-31

Yes indeed. Why? I do not know. But, my husband read this book cover to cover. It was the ONLY book he read to prepare for the birth of our daughter.

His issue, and mine, has a lot to do with Dr. Sears' consistently characterizing Dad as "helper", someone secondary in importance to Mom and incapable of being motherly.

His writing style is kind of folksy if you like that.

If you are really liberal and politically correct, you will not appreciate this book or this man for that reason and for the way
you may perceive his views on gender identity and development in children.

If words like conservative, traditional are anathema to you, leave the book on the shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Common Sense For a New Father.......2001-01-27

I enjoyed reading the book. I have used many of the ideas from Dr. Sears book to raise my two children. I own five other fathering books but this is by far the best and most practical one.

Lets face it, there is little support or literature for fathering. I think society expects men to raise their children just like our dads did. Most of the available fathering literature is written by men with one or two children and psychology degrees. Dr. Sears has six kids and is a busy pediatrician.

Especially if you are a first time father, do your child a favor. Buy and read this book.

2 out of 5 stars Dated and demeaning assumptions.......2000-11-12

Dr. Sears is the acknowledged leader in the attachment parenting movement, with many well-received books to his name. Like his other titles, _Becoming a Father_ emphasizes early bonding, positive discipline, and respect for the child's physical and emotional needs. To the extent that all fathers need to hear this message, this is an excellent book. So why the low rating? Because despite his child-positive message, Dr. Sears is caught in a time warp when it comes to models of masculinity. Underlying his arguments for an active role for fathers are assumptions that this reader found frustratingly rigid and occasionally downright offensive. An example:

"The growing child should see that important family matters require a mutual decision-making process that involves both mom and dad, but I believe that dad is primarily responsible for making decisions." (p. 194)

Even more troubling is the author's attitude toward homosexuality, which seems to be informed more by conservative religious values than by current medical knowledge:

"'I don't want my son to grow up to be a pansy,' exclaimed John, a new father. His sentiments are shared by most men." (p. 200)

For those readers who aren't already aware of the meaning--or should I say "demeaning"?--of this slur, Dr. Sears goes on to define a "pansy" as "an effeminate boy." Given the author's 1950s-style ideas of masculinity, I'd hate to think how he would judge a boy who, after watching his father wearing a younger sibling in a sling, asked for a doll to play with. He concludes:

"I am personally concerned that our society tends to approve of lifestyles [sic!] such as homosexuality. Society sees this as an 'acceptable alternative.' I can accept a person as a homosexual without having to approve of the morality of homosexuality." (p. 208)

If this "love the sinner, hate the sin" attitude reflects your own beliefs, you will probably get a lot out of this book. But if you take a more egalitarian view of male-female relationships and don't believe--and most mainstream doctors do not--that weak paternal role models "cause" homosexuality, you may want to look elsewhere for advice on fathering. To be fair, there is much of value in this book, but the truly helpful ideas can be gleaned from Sears's array of other works (such as _The Baby Book_) or from other attachment parenting guides, like Katie Granju's _Attachment Parenting_.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for the anxious first-time father........1999-07-06

This book provides a non-nonsense look at what a man can expect (and how he can contribute most effectively) during pregnancy and as a father. There is a particular focus on the first few months of fatherhood - which are frankly the months that worry me the most as my wife enters month nine!

Sears' presents a straightforward philosophy based on nurturing the child (often by taking care of the mother). He presents nurture as fundamental to (1) providing a structured, trusting environment so that the child may develop and learn, (2) building a solid foundation for a well-disciplined child, and (3) establishing a relationship that allows your child to assume values that the parents want rather than those from other role models.

As I reflect on the book, most of it seems to be common sense, but it certainly was not obvious before my reading. I would recommend this book to all men about to have a child.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting Read.......2007-04-04

This is an interesting book on modern combat aircraft design. It is well written and simple to follow and understand making it accessible to a wide audience with an interest in combat aircraft.

The book is very informative, with great pictures, good illustrations and descriptions. However, the book can do with updates to take into account some of the developments that have taken place in the 20 years since its publication.

4 out of 5 stars good overview.......2005-02-26

I'm an aerospace grad student and I want to work for a defense contractor, so I figured I'd start trying to educate myself on fighter design.

This book has a lot of basics that are easy to understand for everyone, not just us "rocket scientists". I find the authors style a little bland, but that might be due to my familiarity with the subject matter. Color pictures would help spice things up.

Overall I think its a good book for anyone interested in the science behind fighter planes.

5 out of 5 stars Can't get any better and I've seen them all.......1999-06-06

It has graphs, charts and detailed maps. All the info you wanted on planes and fighters is here. If you like modern planes, you'll love this book.

              Book Description

The Penguin Dictionary of Biology defines some 6,000 terms relating to this rich, complex, and constantly expanding subject—from amino acids, bacteria, and the cell cycle to X-ray diffraction, Ychromosomes, and zygotes. Long established as the definitive single-volume source, the dictionary has now been extensively updated for its eleventh edition. With expanded encyclopedic entries to explain the most crucial concepts, it explores the very latest discoveries and developments, containing more than 400 new entries to take account of the latest thinking on genetics, human physiology, disease, and cell biology. All key botanical and zoological concepts as well as the core vocabulary of biochemistry, immunology, evolutionary theory, and ecology are defined in depth, making this the ideal reference for students, teachers, professionals, and amateur biologists.

2 out of 5 stars Not so good.......2006-12-06

I am a biology major and my professor suggested purchasing this dictionary. I did and have used it very few times. The times that I did used it I left with more questions than answers. If you do not speak the language of biology fluently this dictionary will be very confusing.

5 out of 5 stars Maintain that resting potential, now! .......2006-12-02

The question was: what (or whatever) maintains the resting membrane potential nowadays! I always thought that it was the sodium pump (or Na K ATPase etc.). Recently, I heard: No, it is not the sodium pump that maintains the resting potential. So I checked both the Oxford and the Penguin Dictionaries of Biology. Oxford says that the resting potential is maintained by the sodium pump; however, the Penguin says it is the leaky potassium channels, and sodium pump plays a slight role. Well, it is one of those academic debates, it would seem--which really mean nothing--because nothing is at stake! The debate is from confusing maintenance, recovery, and repair--perhaps. Is it the resting potential (a thing being maintained) or is it the repolarization after a depolarization (a thing in recovery) that we are talking about? Is maintenance still maintenance if you spend energy in extruding the smaller atoms out--well: a running car can be maintained only by spending money? Perhaps, after all, it is only the usual confusion of the frogs in a well: they can only see the stars in their own horizons. The whole biological process has several components, and to know which is the one--well, just take one out and see if the process holds and functions. Which brick is the most important in a wall? Clearly, the truth is never simple, and possibly there is no such thing as the truth. Things evolve using all of the components--and are what they are. So, I guess it is always the context and it is always relative: point of view etc. There is no simple correct answer because the question is incorrectly formulated--without the necessary context. What is more important in the running of a car: the engine or the gas? So get both the Oxford and Penguin--they complement, and both are useful when viewed and understood in the right context: neither can replace the textbook; and no textbook replaces all the source materials--but you need to start somewhere. For a rich fantasy life read Ayul Zamir's Intern Beth. Now, whatever maintains that resting membrane potential!

I majored in biology and work in a lab, and I use this book quite frequently. Not all of us remember every single thing from school, and this book is perfect for a quick reminder of terminology and processes. It covers a great deal of common and uncommon topics, and provides great illustrations for some of the central concepts of life science. I recommend this book for anyone working in, studying, or interested in biology. It is much quicker than trying to go through your old notes or textbooks!

2 out of 5 stars Not for biologists.......2003-01-28

I'm an upper level biology major at a 4-year university, and I think every term that I looked up was not in this book. Maybe it would be fine for people who know absolutely nothing about biology, but if you're looking for a book to give you something a little extra other than your biology text book, this is not it.

Put sex, drugs, art forgeries, and manic depression into a blender, run it at top speed for 10 minutes, and out pops Electroboy, Andy Behrman's high-octane autobiography. The story begins as an exhilarating view into the manic's world, with spontaneous flights to Tokyo, sketchy East Village bars, and a nonstop inner dialogue that makes your pulse race just to keep up. The remainder of the book slows down considerably, starting with Behrman's New Jersey childhood and winding through a successful education, a rapid accumulation of debts, a forged painting scam that lands him in prison, and finally a series of electroshock treatments that allow him to find some balance in life at last.

Between titillating tales of stripping for extra cash and excessive drug use, Behrman charts his experiences with therapists and a wide variety of prescription medications. No clear picture is presented of his attempts at counseling; there is much skipping around between therapists, from whom he manages to hide the extent of his difficulties. In his first experience with Prozac, he doubles his original dose "to speed up" and later fires his psychiatrist for "medicating him like an absolute lunatic." This tale alone makes his doctors come across as more sympathetic characters than Behrman might have intended. Like many confessional memoirs, Electroboy is a blunt tale that relies heavily on the shock value of his über-yuppie behavior, which ends up detracting from the potentially fascinating story of his illness. --Jill Lightner

                                Book Description

Electroboy is an emotionally frenzied memoir that reveals with kaleidoscopic intensity the terrifying world of manic depression. For years Andy Behrman hid his raging mania behind a larger-than-life personality. He sought a high wherever he could find one and changed jobs the way some people change outfits: filmmaker, PR agent, art dealer, stripper-whatever made him feel like a cartoon character, invincible and bright. Misdiagnosed by psychiatrists and psychotherapists for years, his condition exacted a terrible price: out-of-control euphoric highs and tornadolike rages of depression that put his life in jeopardy.

Ignoring his crescendoing illness, Behrman struggled to keep up appearances, clinging to the golden-boy image he had cultivated in his youth. But when he turned to art forgery, he found himself the subject of a scandal lapped up by the New York media, then incarcerated, then under house arrest. And for the first time the golden boy didn’t have a ready escape hatch from his unraveling life. Ingesting handfuls of antidepressants and tranquilizers and feeling his mind lose traction, he opted for the last resort: electroshock therapy.

At once hilarious and harrowing, Electroboy paints a mesmerizing portrait of a man held hostage by his in-satiable desire to consume. Along the way, it shows us the New York that never sleeps: a world of strip clubs, after-hours dives, and twenty-four-hour coffee shops, whose cheap seductions offer comfort to the city’s lonely souls. This unforgettable memoir is a unique contribution to the literature of mental illness and introduces a writer whose energy may well keep you up all night.

                                2 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointed.......2007-10-09

I work with the mentally ill and have a particularly difficult client who has multiple mental illness diagnoses and a personality disorder. In my opinion, his bipolar diagnosis is the one that has wreaked the most havoc in his life and in the lives of his caregivers and loved ones. Prior to reading Electroboy, I wrote to the Andy, the author, who answered immediately, saying he was very busy, but would write more in a few days, when he was back home. He wrote again, as he said he would and though he was not able to provide a lot of help or insight, he offered what he could, in the way of advice. I much appreciated the author taking time to respond to me. I bought and read Andy's book later (mostly out of appreciation for his help, as the reviews had not been great). After all this, I'm sorry to say that my review of the book is "just OK". It is sort of a diary of events, without much insight into the mind of a bi-polar. In fairness to Andy, he may just not realize how very difficult it is for the average reader, who is not bipolar, to understand the workings of the mind, or the rationalizations of someone who is bipolar.

                                2 out of 5 stars Still sick.......2007-09-10

A previous reviewer (El Lagarto) hit the nail almost exactly except, to me, the narcissism here fails to dazzle. While the the author's prose style does uncannily mimic his condition (bipolar disorder, here for some reason referred to by its prior designation of manic depression, making each specific reference to it seem like a literary device), that's part of the problem, really. The helter skelter style allows for no real reflection, and it's the literary equivalent of a sore throat--irritating and hard to swallow in places, especially, for one example, when Behrman relates very specifically his dreams, which blend way too seamlessly with the context of his life at given points, making their content seem invented.

While parts are very affecting--particulary the author's need to apologize for his condition to his parents, and his shame at having failed them--on the whole, this is more of a celebration of a meaningless lifestyle than it is an honest look at a disease. The author seems almost to want to be envied. Behrman is non-self-judgemental to the degree that he cannot even see his own complicity in his condition--the boozing and drugging (ad nauseum, page after page after page, in excruciating detail) can exacerbate greatly the effects of the disease yet it is not until nearly the book's last pages that he sees fit to mention the fact after one of his l-o-n-g line of therapists points it out to him.

That long line of psychologists and psychiatrists points up another fact: Behrman was lucky indeed to be able to afford top-notch healthcare, and it is in part because he takes that for granted that, perhaps, he kept on (and on, and ON) with the self-treatment (liquor, drugs, sex) even while he was receiving what on the whole sounds like excellent treatment--spoiled and rich, he gains no real rapport with a general audience by taking such things for granted and continuing, in his breezy manner (the book IS well-written in spite of its wrongheaded tone and over-aggressive, snarky style, and interesting--I enjoyed the tour of the art world and descriptions of its denizens well enough), to recount his art sales, drug deals, liquor intake, and sexual conquests.

His conviction for having sold at great profit a number of forged Kostabi paintings is dealt with as if he thinks he did nothing wrong except get caught. True, Kostabi's work was itself manufactured, but this does not mitigate for a minute Behrman's own crime--knowingly defrauding buyers and profiting greatly by doing so. We're expected to applaud his dishonesty and to feel fortunate to accompany him abroad while he does his deals; the reader is expected to nod knowingly when a rental car, paid for by a canceled credit card, is blithely left in airport parking because "someone will find it." That's nudge-wink tosh. I came to this book with an open mind and left it with one accordingly padlocked--the great post-punk band Magazine's line "My mind ain't so open / That anything can crawl right in" fits this book to a 'T.'

Being bipolar myself and having struggled mightily with the condition--albeit on a lower-middle-class income sans health insurance--of course I feel for Behrman and his struggles, but his off-putting prose style and unreflective take on the disease in question, PARTICULARLY his failure to acknowledge any blame for the massive exacerbation of his condition via the overwhelming (and preening) accounts of his wretched excesses, renders this book as glib and thus almost as meaningless as the author's lifestyle--not to mention his lack of gratitude for being to the manor born and thus being able to afford top treatment. One does hope he continues this treatment because, based on his prose style and the book's false message, he's far from out of the dark shadow of his disease.

1 out of 5 stars I wanted this book to be good.......2007-08-31

I thought and hoped that this book would break away from some of the memoirs. The more that I read I found that I didn't like this guy so I wasn't really interested in what his life was like. I thought that I would read about a person that I could root for and/or learn from. This was not that book. Perhaps he should do like one of the other reviewers noted. Maybe he should volunteer somewhere for a very long time. Maybe then after some reflection and well placed focus on the needs and plights of others, he can come back and write a revised edition of this "memoir".

I don't think there's anything that Andy didn't get into. Whew! Reading this book you get a sense of what it's like to go inside the brain of madness. Intersting read!

Andy Behrman thouroughly entertains with his book about the rollercoaster ride that is for many , manic depression.
This book is so many things...shocking,funny,brutally honest about himself, scary and sometimes, though rarely, sad.
His writing style cannot help but to illustrate a type of rapid fire mania all it's own. His pacing his fast and his candor is astounding.
That he dedicates this sometimes raunchy book to his Mom and Dad is additionally arresting.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who suffers from , or knows someone that suffers from depression in any of it's forms.

Yves Debay is well-known among military enthusiasts for his well-written, "with-the-troops" photo books of modern fighting units, especially those of France. This book is crammed with color photos of the French TDM's in action in the Gulf War, Somalia, Central African Republic, and UN duties in the former-Yugoslavia.

Be warned, the text is solely in French; otherwise, it serves as a useful tool for enthusiasts and modellers interested in current French Marine equipment and deployment.

                                  Book Description

This is the most challenging time for public management that I have seen in my 35 years of public and non-profit service. The ?survivors,' ten years from now, will be working in systems they could not possibly imagine now. They will have gotten there not just by luck, but by the full commitment of all members of their organizations and by dramatically different methods of public engagement. This book is an excellent resource for starting that journey and for assessing the progress of efforts to date.
?James Kunde, executive director, Coalition to Improve Management in State and Local Government

Creating High-Performance Government Organizations presents practical advice and tools that managers and innovators at every level of government can use in molding their organizations into results-oriented, mission-driven operations. Developed by a top-notch author team under the auspices of The Alliance for Redesigning Government, these recommAndations are rooted in the authors' years of experience in the public and private sectors, and thorough research into the theory and practice of organizational transformation.

The more than three dozen cases presented here will help you understand what high-performance organizations are and develop a clearer understanding of the preconditions to major change, the steps essential to getting started, and ways to overcome common roadblocks along the way.

As a manager of a medium size agency in a fairly large city, I've looked at a lot of these kinds of books. Too often they are fed-land oriented or full of impractical or incomplete ideas. This one wasn't and it has been very useful as we pursue a strategic reform of our management systems.

I've been working on rego in my federal agency for seven years. While this book had no great surprises for me, it was a useful resource to think through what we've done so far and what remains to be done.

This is one of a couple of books I've found that have proven to be helpful in both my day-to-day work and in trying to think more strategically and long-term about helping the city agency I work for perform at a significantly higher level.
