A Must for Every Marine NCO.......2004-01-11

Once you pin on those corporal stripes bud, you'd better get ready to "walk the walk." If every Marine NCO followed the advice contained herein, the Corps would be a lot better off. It's a handy little book and, even though I'm a civilian again, I continue to refer to the section on leadership. The "Handbook" is in need of a lot of updating but it's full of sound information and ought to be in the seabag of every Marine NCO. The only bad thing I can say about the book is that it was revised by a Marine officer, an Annapolis graduate. Most of his contributions are spurious at best.

Great book for Marine NCOs.......2000-01-05

This book is probably on every Marine NCOs bookshelf or in their footlockers and for good reasons. The book is by the same author of the Marine Officers Guide, and has alot of the information found in that book, but there is also alot of unique information. Its chapters are titled:The Noncommissioned Officer, The Marine Corps, The Profession of Arms, Leadership, Traditions Flags Decorations and History, Posts and Stations, Reserves, Military Justice, Uniforms, Courtesy and Ceremonies, Service Afloat(Sea Service/Duty), Individual Administration, Pay Allowances and Travel, and Personal Affairs. If you are going to be a Marine and plan on becoming a NCO(corporal and above), or are going to become a commissioned officer, you have to get this book.

Dreadfully incomplete.......2002-05-26

Every biography, if not of the encyclopedic type, has some profile, an outline of goals the author wants to reach. Often it is necessary to limit the scope of work, because there are other vast volumes on topic already written, and at the same time the topic allows for specialization. Unfortunately, the book by Tom Pocock does not venture in any kind of specialization, and instead, on less than 200 pages it attempts to present a uniform portrait of Captain Frederick Marryat. As the title suggests, an attempt is made to cover his literary heritage, his enormous seafaring experience, his political and military engagement, and of course worldwide travels. My disappointment is unbounded, really, and let me argue why this is the case.

To start with the most serious source of incompleteness of this volume, let me say that it does not offer any insight into the literary heritage of Captain Marryat whatsoever. From time to time, the author mentions that at this or that point in Marryat's life he was writing, published, or tried to publish this or that novel or a diary. Merely a line or two at most is devoted to the subject. For all it is worth, the whole content on literature is limited to one page in total. At the end of the book there is a list of the books written by this ingenious man. Pocock does not add anything worth writing home about about these books. I can't doubt that he read them, but if he did, he didn't show it. And this in the light of the fact that Marryat was the most popular writer in Europe of the 1830s! Marryat influenced many noble authors, starting with Melville and Conrad-Korzeniowski and ending with contemporary nautical fiction writers like Pat O'Brien, not to mention his indirect influence on anyone who has tried his pen in the field of adventure, maritime or not. Marryat and Dickens were great friends who supported and consulted each other in the time their lives overlapped, and the biographer merely focuses on the sociopolitical aspect of this friendship, as if he was not aware of profound literary influences which flowed both ways, and spread like an eagle over the whole Continent of writers, not to mention America. I hoped, in vain, to learn more than I had known beforehand about the connections between writers, Melville, Verne and Conrad-Korzeniowski in particular; I hoped to receive at least minimal treatment and analysis of the particular works of Marryat. I got none. The man basically gave birth to nautical fiction as we know it today, he created several immortal literary archetypes, he had a unique perspective of a naval officer, a writer and a brilliant social observer, and his diaries from travels to America and Canada deserved analysis "deeper" than just a brief quote or two. He wrote about children, about animals, and finally, in his literature of adventure as it was, he incorporated a wide array of themes, ranging from horror, mythology and magic to heavyweight topics of religion, the Holy Inquisition, warfare, exploration and competition. The potential reader of this volume should give up any such hopes. This book offers nothing of the kind.

Apart from writing, Marryat was a politically and socially active man, and even here the book fails, despite some coherent efforts on part of the author. In a dry style of a scribble, the biographer merely notes the events, as they came, only occasionally venturing into some analysis of what happened or did not happen and why. The biographer wrote other volumes, including books on Nelson, and I couldn't get rid of the impression that in the case of this book he simply recycled an old formula, and tried to fit an Alpha and Omega of a man like Marryat into a narrowly defined scheme. This couldn't have worked, and it didn't. Complete chunks of Marryat's lifetime were ignored in this way, while others were overblown out of proportion. Indeed, decency is a lost art on the part of the biographer, as the following fact indicates in light of what I have written about so far and what I chose to be silent about out of empathy. In at least two instances, if I remember well, Tom Pocock writes a small essay on the fact that one of his own ancestors knew Marryat, and desperately tries to input some meaning into the oh-so-distant relationship between the two men. Marryat, if asked, wouldn't remember the ancestor in question, but we are show otherwise. This is simply scandalous. To ignore half of Marryat's life in order to make space for this? Excuse me? This biography is outrageous, and although if you know nothing on the subject, it will be of some use, dishonest as it is, at the same time it is a complete waste of money otherwise.

Not just a writer - but also a good man in a tight corner!.......2002-03-01

This thoroughly enjoyable biography has only one drawback - its brevity. Though Marryat is largely known at present as a children's writer, his reputation in his own time rested on a series of adventure novels for adults based on his own very exciting career - he can fairly be claimed to have single-handedly invented the genre of naval fiction and to have set the pattern for Forrester, Kent, Pope and O'Brien. His own life - though cut off relatively early - was as exciting and varied as anything in his fiction: starting with near suicidal action under the legendary Cochrane, at sea almost constantly in the later years of the Napoleonic Wars in opposition to the French and Americans, returning home to develop a signalling system and commence a literary career and later returning to action in Burma, his service there involving the Royal Navy's first use of steamships in action and initiating the decline of the sailing navy in which Marryat had grown up. Marryat seems to have had a natural affinity for action - as a literary lion touring the United States in the 1830s he took time out to help put down a rebellion in Canada, and was once prosecuted for brawling in the streets of London - and his zest for life comes across well in Mr.Pocock's biography. Until Dickens arrived on the scene he was the foremost popular novelist in Britain, and even thereafter was a prominent figure in London literary circles - as he had been at Court earlier. He carried a raffish air of the Napoleonic and Regency periods into the growing respectability of early Victorian society and the account provided here of his discovery by an irate husband in an American lady's hotel room, and of the ingenious manner in which he appears to have extricated himself, hints at even more scandalous events that can only now be guessed at. Throughout the book Marryat comes across as a larger than life character who must have been a delight (and an exasperation) to know and a good man to have by one's side in a tight corner. One regrets however that this biography does not dwell more on the quality and content of Marryat's literary output and provide a better guide to the reader who would like to explore it further. This, and the brevity, aside, this is a most enjoyable book and can be highly recommended to anybody interested in the age of fighting sail, the advent of steam or the early Victorian literary scene.

A leading authority on the Soviet space program.......2006-07-31

In many ways Oberg is the Carl Sagan of space engineering. He's worked in the trenches at NASA as an engineer (Johnson Space Center in Houston 1975-1997) but he has a talent for bringing his area of expertise to the masses. He's big, friendly, engaging, and surprisingly telegenic for an engineer in his fifties. He speaks English, French, and Russian and has used his language skills and friendly demeanor to gain access to the heart of the Russian and European space establishments. He's in the golden rolodex. He gives testimony before congress. He appears on PBS, cable news, and the Discovery channel. He writes for a wide range of publications about space engineering.

Oberg is probably best known for authoring Red Star in Orbit, a history of the Soviet space effort up until 1981. In 1991, PBS transformed his book in a documentary series. HBO has optioned Red Star in Orbit for some future made-for-TV miniseries.

Oberg is also a proud, card-carrying member of CSICOP. He was part of a small maelstrom of controversy in 2004 when it was revealed NASA had contracted him to write a book that finally takes on the "moon landings were a hoax" crowd. The book was to address the hoax "proof" point by point and showing why the thesis is based on a poor understanding of basic physics. Oberg was to be paid $15,000 for the book. Critics felt that if NASA made it an official publication it would give credibility to the hoax theory. Oberg himself declared he'd write the book on his own dime.

What's fascinating about Oberg is his involvement as a skeptic in the world of UFO nuts. For years, and to this day, he's been a regular haunt on newsgroups like alt.alien.visitor. With humor and a vast store of knowledge he takes on the "they're up there!" UFO crowd. It's quite a joy to watch the wild eyed UFO nuts accusing Oberg of being a NASA/CIA stooge, falsely attributing quotes to him, and generally just raging at someone who not only doesn't share their point of view but does not share it based on a sound body of historical and technical knowledge they lack. The man has patience. He seems to best the UFO fringe time and time again. It's a joy to watch.

A well-researched & fascinating survey........1998-01-04

Mr. Oberg, an internationally recognized expert on the Russian (FSU) space program, provides an excellent description of the triumphs of the Soviet space program. The story is fascinating, and the author clearly respects his subjects. What's special about Oberg, though, is his perspective on Soviet affairs. He is also a scholar of Russian studies, and rather than simply recounting historical data and technical details of the Soviets' space efforts, he also outlines the details of the political realities which the space program faced. It makes a nice companion to studies of the US space program. Highly recommended.

Oberg was and is one of America's experts on the Soviet space program. This book reflects his knowledge on the subject. One of the questions answered in this volume is "Did the Soviet's race the US to the moon?" The answer is a strong yes. Did the US beat them? Again, the anwer is a strong yes. "I will never forget the date of the third kill. It was on my Mothers birthday 4 March." - This is a compiled collection of war and development stories and variations in writing abilities are to be expected. Repetitions of topics are off course to be expected also. And although none of the story writer is great (but some are decent), you soon get tired of some of them reeling off half the Captains and Majors they've met at one stage or another. - Including where they had been previously. And an absolute low point is reached when one of the authors uses the opportunity to get his mothers birth date in print for the entire world. - Perhaps interesting and entertaining for the magazine in the club, but... I guess some having given the book four stars are personally involved, in one way or another?
(A minor thing that may not offend anyone but still is weird, is the size: Has never been afraid of a thick book. But this is a mini-telephone book, both in thickness and area. Inconvenient to read, but perhaps it says more about the editing?)

The stories were very vivid and put you in the situations. However,there was alot of repetition that this type of writting (individial stories) is prone to. Editing could have prevented those. Also there many mistakes, misspelled words and typos. This all took away from the validity of the stories.

This is a truly fantastic book.
Anyone interested in military aviation should read this.
As a big fan of first person accounts, I was not disappointed
and the Weasels deliver with countless tales, some exciting,
some harrowing, others frustrating, all fascinating.

You can't help but feel enormous admiration for these warriors
who pressed home attacks in the face of almightly opposition
without apparent support of their government and the chain of
command.

Why do some policies succeed while others do not? Why do some reforms persist while others fall apart? What enables a country to adjust its policies to cope with change, or to deal with previous failures? The 2006 Report on Economic and Social Progress in Latin America (IPES) addresses these questions. This volume appears after more than a decade of political and economic reform in Latin America and the Caribbean. The success of these reforms-and the quality of public policies-has varied widely. As a result, recognition has spread that good policy "recipes" are not enough. Specific policy recipes, no matter how well conceived, are necessary but not sufficient for success. I am reading parts of this book aloud to my children.......2006-12-13

who are 11 and 13. They wanted me to read the whole chapter about the snow-sampling expedition. They are thrilled and disturbed by the whale hunts and the vivid descriptions of the ice, and they are more interested in the science than I expected -- but as another reviewer noted, the author is a parent, too, and while the science isn't oversimplified, it is set out in plain language.

My kids want to go to Alaska as soon as possible, "before it's all melted and gone forever" as my daughter says. And my son wanted to know -- "Mom, if I can figure out cold fusion, will you be proud of me?"

All the accolades by other reviewers here are well deserved. This is a wonderful read; the science is woven into the story so seamlessly that you don't realize just how much you're learning. But I think the most important message of this story is that the earth has an intrinsic value and beauty that we do not have the right to destroy.

So, get this book. Read it. Donate a copy to your local library. Maybe our children really can save the planet. This book could be the inspiration.

The Whale and the Supercomputer: On the Northern Front of Climate Change.......2006-05-01

I flew a Jet Ranger helicopter for ERA Helicopters in the spring of 1969, shortly after oil was definitely discovered at Prudhoe Bay. I was the farthest west contract at that time, living with and working for a seismic crew. As a result I had to learn a lot about surviving in the white-out, memorizing the shapes of all the tundra ponds, various willows and other Arctic shrubs, snowy owls and ptarmigan, and so forth. Reading this book brought me back to all those adventuresome skills and a time just before we were all so skeptical of our society and its outcome. Working in extreme outdoor jobs then was a lot like the life described in this book. Certain abilities to pick up on local lore of the Natives, as well as the most advanced technical thinking was expected of you, and comforting. I have enjoyed seeing anything about the Arctic's North Slope of Alaska ever since, and hope we can move forward into our complicated future without confiscating that amazing habitat up there. And good luck to the Arctic Ocean's inhabitants and their ecology; they are going to need it for what we have done to the atmosphere. This writer is a fine journalist for conveying what we have learned so far.

This book tells many stories centered on the theme of climate change as seen in Northern Alaska. The Iñupiat people have lived around what is today Barrow, Alaska for over a thousand years. As with many indigenous peoples, they have a keen awareness of their natural surroundings. For the Iñupiat, knowledge of weather, ice and whale behavior is a matter of life and death, both moment to moment in a climate so harsh the cold can kill quickly and in the larger life of their villages, where successful whale hunts are needed to feed the people.

Barrow has also been the site of scientific Arctic climate studies since the 1800s. A parallel culture of scientists has developed in the several research stations in the area. For many years, the Iñupiat and scientific communities have coexisted in varying states of tension. Both recognize strengths in the other but their ways of approaching life and understanding the world are very different and often not possible to reconcile. While the scientists have frequently consulted with and tried to learn from the Iñupiat, the scientists have typically found this a frustrating exercise and the Iñupiat have had enough bad experiences with researchers on short projects not really understanding the people or the place that they do not easily trust outsiders.

Charles Wohlforth has lived in Alaska and did a remarkable job of coaxing stories out of the Iñupiat. They are storytellers - telling stories has long been deeply ingrained in their culture and way of life. We hear some of their stories as well as those of the scientists. Perhaps most remarkably, we meet a scientist who returned to Alaska to adopt the Iñupiat way of life as a whaling captain instead of pursuing his scientific career and Iñupiat who have made their way as scientists even as they live next to the people they grew up with.

But most important, while we see the effects of global warming and climate change as seen by the scientists doing research and the Iñupiat whalers trying to cope with the impact of bad ice and warmer weather on all aspects of whaling, the author reminds us that these local effects are just a snapshot in one place of changes that will affect us all. Reading this book compels an appreciation for the depth and breadth of knowledge of an indigenous people surviving the changes in the modern world while preserving their native ways and traditions.

We know why this book was honored with the 2005 Los Angeles Times Book Award for science/technical writing. Wohlforth cheerfully tackles the deep fog of climate science (even some of the career scientists he interviews seem hopelessly befuddled by the complexity of it). But he approaches it both as a journalist who makes his living by storytelling, and as a father used to gently encouraging his four bright, curious children to understand their world. He can distill a century of mind-numbing bench science into a metaphor that his 10-year old can understand and that readers of all ages will appreciate.
To get the story he drops into whaling expeditions and arctic research explorations with equal aplomb by chipping in and becoming one of the team. (The comparison is not unlike the cinematographers who capture on film the drama of a Mt. Everest ascent: the only way to get the picture is to strap on the gear and make the climb themselves, right alongside the adventurers they're filming.)
Getting and telling the story is what Wohlforth knows how to do. In his book, he captivates us by telling us what his "characters" know how to do. From the fox who knows how to skitter across a thin sheet of newly-forming ice without falling through, to the native who knows how to take compass readings by studying the shadows on snow drifts, to our generation's academic elites who know how to wrap their minds around the infinitely complex equations that underlie the mysteries of climate change. In the end, it's really not so mysterious: the signs of climate change are obvious and all around us.
Read this book and prepare to be moved and enlightened, just as you will be charmed by the people whose lives, livelihoods, and ways of knowing are as diverse as the environment itself.

Global Warming from Two Cultures........2004-06-30

To most of us Global Warming is a distant and sketchy thing. We don't really know what to believe (although in recent years we haven't had nearly as much snow as before). In Alaska steady warming 'everybody knows is a fact.'

The title comes from the interplay between the whale hunting Inupiaq Eskimos and the visiting scientists trying to get a better understanding of what's happening to the climate of the world. Indeed the strength of the book is in Mr. Wohlforth's understanding of both cultures and with his gift in writing so that he is able to explain the world view of both cultures.
