Book Description

By 1481 Granada was the last Islamic enclave in Catholic Spain. Granada's last ruler, Muhammad XII 'Boadbil', faced the might of the Spanish royal army revitalised and lavishly equipped with modern artillery. Despite this mismatch of strength it took 11 years of hard campaigning before the Spanish troops could bring their guns to bear on the walls of Granada. After this the outcome could not be long delayed. Andalusia, the physical embodiment of the flowering Islamic culture in Spain, was snuffed out. The commanders, forces, plans and campaign itself are all examined closely in this superbly illustrated account of 'Los Reyes Catolicos' greatest victory.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing new but well worth the reading.......2000-06-22

It's not exactly an introduction into the whole 'reconquista' issue but rather concluding remarks focused on the betrayal of Granada, the last remaining Muslim enclave in the Iberian peninsula.

But it's worth the reading for it clearly shows the advantage of Spanish artillery and the disadvantage of Muslim disunity. Read other books on the similar subject first before tackling this one.

After this, the outcome could not be long delayed. Andalusia, the physical embodiment of the flowering Islamic culture in Spain, was snuffed out. Nevertheless, although the fall of Granada meant the end of Muslim Spain, completing the long wished for 'Reconquista', it also signalled the beginning of a united Spain. Fernando and Isabel, already jointly holding the crowns of Castile and Aragon, used the victory to promote feelings of unity amongst their subjects: in spite of most of the rewards of the campaign going to Castilian nobles, the fall of Granada was nevertheless the achievement of the whole of Spain, using resources from both Castile and Aragon. David Nicolle investigates the 11-year campaign that culminated in the 'Reconquista' phase of the Iberian Peninsula's history. The commanders, forces, plans and campaign itself are all examined closely in this superbly illustrated account of 'Los Reyes Catolicos' greatest victory.

      Book Description

Creating Christian Granada provides a richly detailed examination of a critical and transitional episode in Spain's march to global empire. The city of Granada—Islam's final bastion on the Iberian peninsula—surrendered to the control of Spain's "Catholic Monarchs" Isabella and Ferdinand on January 2, 1492. Over the following century, Spanish state and Church officials, along with tens of thousands of Christian immigrant settlers, transformed the formerly Muslim city into a Christian one.

With constant attention to situating the Granada case in the broader comparative contexts of the medieval reconquista tradition on the one hand and sixteenth-century Spanish imperialism in the Americas on the other, Coleman carefully charts the changes in the conquered city's social, political, religious, and physical landscapes. In the process, he sheds light on the local factors contributing to the emergence of tensions between the conquerors and Granada's formerly Muslim, "native" morisco community in the decades leading up to the crown-mandated expulsion of most of the city's moriscos in 1569-1570.

Despite the failure to assimilate the moriscos, Granada's status as a frontier Christian community under construction fostered among much of the immigrant community innovative religious reform ideas and programs that shaped in direct ways a variety of church-wide reform movements in the era of the ecumenical Council of Trent (1545-1563). Coleman concludes that the process by which reforms of largely Granadan origin contributed significantly to transformations in the Church as a whole forces a reconsideration of traditional "top-down" conceptions of sixteenth-century Catholic reform.

5 out of 5 stars A classic work on one of history's key military campaigns........1996-10-07

One of the military campaigns that changed world history has been rescued from near oblivion by Albert D. McJoynt, editor of this classic work. The fall of Moorish Granada to Spain's Catholic rulers, Ferdinand and Isabella, was a turning point in establishing the boundaries between Christendom and Islam in the West, boundaries which had been in conflict for nearly a millennium. It also allowed the royal couple to launch Columbus' voyage with its well-known impact on the course of human events.

              Book Description

The thwarted invasion of England by the Spanish Armada is studied here in fascinating detail. How, in a few short days, Philip II's fleet was stopped from invading England and forced into full retreat is looked at in a new and unique way. With the help of battle plans and bird's eye views of the action, leading historian Angus Konstam considers many of the intriguing questions surrounding the campaign, concluding with details of how the Armada's disastrous return voyage around Scotland and Ireland became one of the most tragic episodes in maritime history.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars In the fine tradition of the Osprey Series.......2002-06-07

The Armada Campaign 1588 : The Great Enterprise Against England (Campaign, 86) by Angus Konstam, and Howard Gerrard (Illustrator) is written in the fine tradition of the Osprey Campaign Series. It is written in the traditional format and describes the immediate causes and effects of the battles as well as the battle itself.

The book is well written and easy to follow. The maps are very helpful and do a good job of putting the narrative into context. When one finishes, one has a basic understanding of the wheres, whys and hows of the attempted invasion of Britain. The fact that the British protagonists are names which bring forth images of dashing and gallant pirates, such as Francis Drake, doesn't hurt.

              3 out of 5 stars Decent but Too-Limited a Focus.......2001-04-28

The Armada Campaign 1588 is a decent summary of the Spanish attempt to invade England in the late 16th Century. As per the standard Osprey Campaign format, Angus Konstam provides succinct but accurate sections on the origins of the campaign, the opposing leaders, opposing plans and opposing warships. A detailed campaign chronology, blow-by-blow battle account and epilogue complete this survey of the Spanish expedition. Konstam concludes that the Spanish fleet maintained fairly tight defensive formations throughout the week-long fighting and while the English had the upper hand in gunnery and maneuvering, the English were unable to defeat the armada outright. Rather, the fortuitous fireship attack off Calais forced the Spanish to abandon the amphibious part of their mission and severe Atlantic storms demolished the once-mighty fleet on its return to Spain. The maps and illustrations that support the text are excellent.

However the problem with this volume is an over-focus on the English-Spanish naval battles in the channel. This campaign was merely an episode in a very long Anglo-Spanish struggle for hegemony, not an isolated event. For example, Drake's pre-emptive raid on Cadiz in 1587 inflicted far more damage on the preparations for the Armada than this account suggests. Although Konstam provides a good order of battle table on the English and Spanish fleets, there is no information on the Duke of Parma's Spanish in the Netherlands or the Dutch rebels. In fact, the Dutch fleet was far from insignificant in the campaign because it served to impede Parma's ability to mount an amphibious operation from the Netherlands. Certainly the large Spanish galleons in the Armada were no solution to dealing with shallow-draft Dutch warships that could interdict the Spanish invasion barges. Nor does Konstam mention the 18,973 soldiers that sailed with the Armada in his order of battle (there were five brigade-size tercios with the fleet). Another area that is totally ignored is that of finances and logistics. Nobody had ever supplied a fleet for extended operations with gunpowder weapons before and ammunition shortages were a major limiting factor, particularly for the British. While Konstam mentions the "Royal ships" (ie. warships owned by the crown), he does not mention how expensive it was to maintain a standing navy. Queen Elizabeth had to de-mobilize parts of the fleet in late 1587 when the Armada was delayed and then time re-mobilization in 1588 with the expected arrival of the Spaniards. Disease was another factor that caused attrition of trained crews sitting around in ports. All of these are examples of a broader view of the campaign, rather than just warships slugging it out in the channel.

Nor does the author spend much effort in discussing follow-up operations or the impact of the failure of the Armada. The English expedition to Portugal in 1589 is ignored, as is the Spanish intervention in the French civil wars in 1588-9. The Spanish expeditions of 1596-7 are mentioned, but not detailed. The loss of fifty or more warships and 15,000 or more crewmen was a catastrophe for Spain that is not spelled out in this account. King Philip II sent the hurled the best force he could afford at England and failed utterly. Reconstituting a similar force was beyond his means. Finally, the Armada Campaign was a landmark in naval history due to the fact that it set the pattern for the next two centuries of fleet battles.

All forms of popular protest include a specific category of 'popular intellectual' who reflects social reality. This volume looks at the experiences of popular intellectuals in non-western societies, operating within social-movement networks that link local, regional, and international arenas, and connect to a global flow of ideas. Eight case studies on different societies in twentieth-century Asia, Africa, and Latin America highlight specific activist intellectuals and their role in collective action.

Shows how science has become a major contested cultural symbol, and suggests that we need a new 'post-normal' synthesis in which the old debates are transcended. Science is not about demonstrations by experts, but dialogue among stakeholders. This is the new face of science, one which gives Kuhn's seminal insights new life.

This essay is not worth the paper it is printed on.
I bought it,because I was looking for a concise introduction to Kuhn's critisism of science.
Obviously a small booklet cannot make a very detailed case, but it is no excuse for the absolute lack of a stuctured logical argument. Frequently very controvesial opinions are stated with authority and no supporting evidence. His statments about the world view of scientists (e.g. nature is only for the benefit of man) are not just wrong, they are also arrogant and offensive to anybody working in the natural sciences.
Worst of all is the section on "postcolonial studies of science", where he appears to be pushing his own little agenda, although it has no connection to Kuhn's work.

                4 out of 5 stars short & sweet.......2002-06-03

At about 60 pages with 200 words/page, this is more an essay than a book. At the beginning of the 20th century, SCIENCE had a distinguished status as the only producer of objective truths. This position was supported by various philosophies designed to distinguish scientific truth from other truths. This book describes the challenges to this status of science produced in the wake of Kuhn's work and responses to this challenge within the scientific and philosophical community. It is nice, brief and comprehensible introduction to the "sociology of scientific knowledge" requiring only a modicum of prior knowledge. My only complaint is that it is too sketchy at several points; I would have liked to see several of themes developed at greater length. This is the price of brevity.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant summation of difficult material.......2000-10-18

I just had a chance to look at this popular book -- which I presume is meant for a British audience. It really does the business, in terms of quickly getting readers up to speed with the reception of Kuhn's work and the ongoing 'Science Wars'. An especially good feature is its summary of Steve Fuller's recent controversial take on Kuhn's 'significance'.

                Book Description

The unique culture of Iran and the sweep of its history are revealed in this evocative travelogue of an American family searching for a lost friend in the country of their youth.

Growing up in Tehran in the 1960s, Terence Ward and his brothers were watched over by Hassan, the family’s cook, housekeeper, and cultural guide. After an absence of forty years, Ward embarked on a pilgrimage with his family in search of Hassan. Taking us across the landscape of Iran, he plumbs its unimaginably rich past, explores its deep conflicts with its Arab neighbors, and anticipates the new “Great Game” now being played out in central Asia. Insightful, informative, and moving, Searching for Hassan enhances our understanding of the Middle East with the story of a family who came to love and admire Iran through their deep affection for its people.

Searching for Hassan is a beautiful historical, sociopolitical and personal journey through the Iranian landscape, and from a neutral vantage point no less. Terence Ward's writing is brilliant, well researched and a pleasure to read.

                5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2007-04-18

As an American growing up in Iran during the 60's and 70's it was as though I was reading my own biography. I could not believe that Terence had captured so many of my own memories on paper. There were many times while reading the book that I teared up.

Thank you for such a wonderful book. I loved every minute of it and hope Mr. Ward has more stories to tell in the future!

3 out of 5 stars Slightly Unbelievable but Good.......2007-03-06

How is it that mom, dad and their 4 grown sons, living in different parts of the country and world, can all get together, leave their jobs and homes and go to Iran on vacation? All at the same time! To me, that was a stretch too good to be true but made the story better. Money for this adventure was not an object either. The story was good, the purpose was clear, but the Hassan story could have been told in a third the pages. The bulk of the book is Iranian history and geography, which was very well done but could have been a separate travel book. The bond with the servants was touching and the memories touching.

5 out of 5 stars When in Iran, "expect to suffer from excessive hospitality".......2006-04-09

Amazon's "Better Together" recommender worked well here: I read "Searching for Hassan" after reading Firoozeh Dumas' charming memoir "Funny in Farsi." Terence Ward's "Hassan" is a compelling read, especially the chapter "Appointment in Tudeshk" which thrillingly recounts the Ward family's reunion with the Ghasemi family after 29 years apart. I'll sheepishly tell you that I skimmed some of Mr. Ward's erudite sidebars about certain long-ago aspects of Persian history and focused on his more recent accountings of the days of the Shah, the transition to theocratic rule and life since the revolution. But the recounting of the trip itself is pure magic, as are Mr. Ward's remembrances of Hassan and Fatimeh Ghasemi. You can clearly see why these two inspired such devotion from the Ward family.

                A couple of quick observations:

                1. The Iranian people - as a whole - are incredible hosts. As the author notes at one point: "Expect to suffer from excessive hospitality." Never have a people been so misrepresented in the mainstream press.

                2. Conventional wisdom to the contrary, the Ward family feels that the Iranian people - as a whole - have faired better under theocratic rule than under the Shah (the poverty witnessed by the author's parents pre-Revolution appears - under observation - to be not as widespread or abject). Again, this is their observation and opinion.

                3. You get a sense of the lost opportunity of the reformers. The Wards' trip comes on the heels of the election of the then-Prime Minister Khatami, and the sense of promise is palpable throughout the country. Not without reason, thanks to his good looks, stylishness and Western manners (fluent in English and German, for example), Khatami is described as "our country's JFK." Looking back at this now in 2006 with the reform movement clearly set back in the last election, one can't help but be disheartened. I'm sure the author feels the same way.

5 out of 5 stars Appreciation Works Wonders.......2005-03-23

The best feature of this story is the author's sense of appreciation. Returning to the land of his childhood after 30 years, Ward is filled with appreciation for all places, characters and canundrums he meets. Where suspicion commonly reigns between Americans and Iranians, Ward's infectious appreciation opens door after door -- to enjoyment, insight and friendship.

                Book Description

This book examines the extraordinary personality of Claus Count Stauffenberg, a key figure in the 1944 coup attempt against Hitler. Stauffenberg’s personality is thrown into relief by a study of his two brothers and other family members and friends. The three Stauffenberg brothers, Berthold, Alexander, and Claus, were inseparable both emotionally and intellectually. Their view of human existence was rooted in their south-German aristocratic background, in classical antiquity, and in Christian culture. This â€~family biography’ describes how the brothers’ professions and their political and military environments led them to take fundamental positions on their government’s and Hitler’s tyranny. Inevitably the book focuses on Claus Count Stauffenberg’s military career and his fight to overthrow Hitler, culminating in the attempted assassination and coup of 20 July 1944. No other work has yet probed Stauffenberg’s life and mind so deeply, or has offered such a comprehensive account of resistance to Hitler at the highest administrative level.

"Long live our holy Germany" were the last words of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg on the night of July 20, 1944. Peter Hoffmann's magnificient book is a salute to the Stauffenberg brothers and most importantly Claus von Stauffenberg. Stauffenberg was the real thing, a man of deep Christian principles and extradionary courage who knew that the future of Germany was more important than his life and the life of his fellow conspirators. He made the ultimate sacrifice so that others could live in freedom. Stauffenberg is not only a hero of Germany, but of anyone on earth who loves freedom and respects the laws of God and humanity. Stauffenberg was Germany's guardian angel, who attempted to save his nation and slay the man he deemed "the antichrist." Doctor Hoffmann paints a wonderful picture of Stauffenberg's early life and military career. He then moves into minute detail of the plot to kill Hitler and the man whom fate had chosen to lead it. Simply a great scholastic achievement.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive History of an Enduring Hero.......2003-05-31

Of the ten or so serious biographies on Stauffenberg, this will stand as the text to refer to for comprehensiveness and objectivity. The prose is clear, the questions of enduring interest are all answered, and the reader meets the man. Unreservedly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate Stauffenberg biography........1999-07-26

Peter Hoffmann's biography of Stauffenberg is the best anyone is likely to write on the subject. The book comprehensively assesses all primary sources hitherto used by Stauffenberg's previous biographers, plus many additional sources which the author himself found. Hoffmann's previous books, among them 'THE HISTORY OF THE GERMAN RESISTANCE, 1933-1945', and 'HITLER'S PERSONAL SECURITY' serve as a foundation to this work which, all told, spans 30 years of scholarly research. As the depth and breadth of this study eclipses any other attempt to date, its conclusions are unassailably judicious. Thus, Hoffmann's 'STAUFFENBERG' has made perhaps the most definitive contribution to the historical field of resistance to the Third Reich.

                  Book Description

Entering the shady world of what he calls "violent entrepreneurship," Vadim Volkov explores the economic uses of violence and coercion in Russia in the 1990s. Violence has played, he shows, a crucial role in creating the institutions of a new market economy. The core of his work is competition among so-called violence-managing agencies-criminal groups, private security services, private protection companies, and informal protective agencies associated with the state-which multiplied with the liberal reforms of the early 1990s. This competition provides an unusual window on the dynamics of state formation.

Violent Entrepreneurs is remarkable for its research. Volkov conducted numerous interviews with members of criminal groups, heads of protection companies, law enforcement employees, and businesspeople. He bases his findings on journalistic and anecdotal evidence as well as on his own personal observation.

Volkov investigates the making of violence-prone groups in sports clubs (particularly martial arts clubs), associations for veterans of the Soviet- Afghan war, ethnic gangs, and regionally based social groups, and he traces the changes in their activities across the decade. Some groups wore state uniforms and others did not, but all of their members spoke and acted essentially the same and were engaged in the same activities: intimidation, protection, information gathering, dispute management, contract enforcement, and taxation. Each group controlled the same resource-organized violence.

                  4 out of 5 stars Nice, but.......2007-03-23

This is a "good" book about what was happening in Russia in the 90-s. My only critical point is that at times it seems like the author decides to pay tribute to the academics and then it reads just like a text book on econimics. Otherwise, the relevant points (chapters) seem truly on the mark.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent scholarly work.......2003-07-10

If you're looking for a True Crime book on the Russian (Eurasian) "maffiya" in the style of Jerry Capeci or George Anastasia, this is not it. This book will seem "dry" to anyone seeking sensational reporting on ROC. However, it is an invaluable resource to academics, law-enforcement, or even the average enthusiast seeking well-researched information on the development, motivations, and modus operandi of the ROC groups. Admittedly, Volkov's work may seem a little pedantic at times, especially in his analysis of the dispute settlement process. However, few researchers in the field have produced such a thorough picture or created such a clear model for understanding Eurasian OC as Volkov has.

                  2 out of 5 stars Painful.......2003-05-10

The book is very detailed and concise, and yet written in a style that is almost painful to read. Very dry and monotonous. You can easily imagine an university professor droning the words of the book.

Well researched, a lot of information, but not something that can be casually read. Written in a very dry style...

                  5 out of 5 stars A superb book.......2002-12-29

This is a superb book. Anyone who is interested not only of the topic as in Russia but as throughout Eastern Europe should read this amazing book. I come from Bulgaria and I know from experience that the mafia development there is very similar.
                  A great book.
